A COASTAL village in Portugal has been named one of Europe’s best hidden gems with serene sandy beaches.

Located just over an hour from Lisbon, Baleal used to be a small island, but it is now connected to the mainland by a sandbar.

It was described by Conde Nast Traveller as “paradise on earth for lovers of surfing, bodyboarding and water sports in general”, according to The Portugal News.

Many people head to Baleal for its surfing, as conditions are often consistent.

As a result, the village boasts a number of surf schools and camps.

But if you don’t want to be in the water, then you can enjoy the long stretches of golden sand.

On the north side of the village, the water tends to be calmer, making this side ideal for families.

Then the south side is better for keen surfers thanks to the bigger waves.

The entire village is also known for its serene sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean.

One visitor, who recently explored Baleal Beach, said: “Very child-friendly beach, shallow water far out.

“Also very much used for surfing because of the nice waves.

“The sand is fine and soft, plenty of space on the big beach.”

Another said: “Surfer heaven and people watching paradise.

“Bar da Praia is perfect to have a cold beer, and a burger and watch the amazing sunsets.”

Visitors can also head to Chapel of Santo Estêvão, which is a small chapel with breathtaking views over the island.

If you are looking for a cosy place to grab a bite, head to Taberna do Ganhão, which serves dishes such as ‘The Cowboy’, which features a steak, sauteed potatoes, steamed vegetables and pink peppercorn sauce for €22 (£19.36).

Alternatively, you could opt for the shrimp curry with pineapple puree and basmati rice for €20 (£17.60).

One recent diner said: “Everything was delicious. I loved the curry shrimp, so creamy and yummy!

And temperatures in Baleal reach a high of 15C and low of 11C.
