SIMON Cowell has revealed he is thinking of bringing back The X Factor, nearly eight years after the ITV talent contest was axed.

Over its 14-year run the show discovered huge acts including One Direction, Little Mix, Leona Lewis and Olly Murs.

And now the music mogul is considering a revival for the Gen Z years, following the success of his Netflix show The Next Act, which spawned rising pop stars December 10.

Simon told TV presenter Jamie East on his new podcast Tales From The Celebrity Trenches: “Do you bring it back as X Factor or do you bring it back as the Z Factor? We talk about it a lot.

“There’s still no question — the power of TV in terms of getting people to know an artist.

“It is so important if you are not writing your own material.

“There is something about being on a big screen.

“You do hear about these artists who break online, but so rarely.

Running such a huge talent show is not always plain sailing, but Simon had a distinctly New Age solution when the stresses got just too much while filming The Next Act.

He turned to crystals.

Simon recalled: “We were running out of money so I did have a little mini meltdown.

“And then I just sat with my crystals and they just comforted me.

“I can feel the energy.

“I thought it was kind of comforting having the crystals rather than everyone in my ear driving me crazy.”

He added: “I definitely believe in the powers of the universe.

“I feel that if you can harness the power of the universe to try and make your mind just calm down for a moment . . . ”

I don’t think I’ll be swapping a medicinal glass of rosé for rose quartz any time soon, but each to their own . . . 

Kylie in Michael tribute

Kylie Minogue will pay tribute to late boyfriend Michael Hutchence in her new self-titled Netflix documentary.

She confirmed yesterday that the Inxs frontman will be included.

In a first-look trailer, Kylie shared photographs of them together while they dated between 1989 and 1991.

Despite splitting, Kylie stayed close to fellow Aussie Michael until his death aged 37 in 1997,

She said previously: “He was a dark bad boy and I was the pure good girl.

“He opened up a whole new world for me.”

The three-parter will also feature Kylie’s friends and family talking about highs and lows she has faced, including her breast cancer diagnosis in 2005.

Kylie is heard saying off camera: “I felt removed from my body.

“I was so scared of what was ahead.”

Her sister Dannii can then be seen welling up as she says: “We didn’t know if she was ever going to well again.

“I just wanted to be with my sister.

“Music kept us going.”

Fans will have to wait until May 20 to watch the series in full.

Jack Cullen began his first headline European solo tour in Bristol last night, and has a long slog in front of him.

The musician, who released single Face To Face on Friday, will play across the UK in the next few days then head to Brussels, Cologne, Amsterdam and Berlin.

He’ll then Run 22 marathons in 22 days – back from the German capital to London for the tour’s final night, headlining Oslo in Hackney on June 12.

Live gigs in Dolldrums

Pussycat Dolls, Post Malone and Zayn Malik have all cancelled North American tours in the past week – and it’s the clearest sign yet the live music economy is about to turn.

Last summer was one of the best-ever for gigs, with Oasis, Dua Lipa and Coldplay selling out stadiums, while Radiohead, Lewis Capaldi and Tate McRae played to packed arenas.

But ticket prices have only continued to rise since live shows returned after Covid, and now it’s clear punters have had enough of greedy artists taking advantage.

Shows are already hugely expensive in the UK, but over in the US, the prices are even higher.

Suki Waterhouse, Ella Mai and Logic and G-Eazy’s tours there later this year are also struggling to shift tickets, with fears they could be axed too. It’s only a matter of time before we see a similar knock-on effect in the UK.

Even some major tours here this summer are yet to sell out, after insatiable promoters added strings of dates and pushed artists into bigger and bigger venues.

As you know from this column, I love a good concert.

But at a time when everyone is strapped for cash, paying through the nose for a couple of hours of singing is just not an option for many.

So if the music industry keeps moving like it is at the moment, it’s only going to turn people off altogether.

It’s a three-horse race to the No1 album spot this Friday, with Mel C, Michael Jackson and Kneecap all battling it out for the prime position.

Just under 3,000 chart units separate third place from the top spot, so it’s all to play for.

Kneecap are currently at No1 with Fenian, closely followed by Mel’s Sweat and MJ’s 2005 compilation album The Essential, which is back in demand after the Michael biopic.

Pete aims for Kyle collab

Pete Doherty is recruiting The View’s frontman Kyle Falconer to collaborate on songs for his next solo album.

They previously worked together on Pete’s track Midas Touch, on Kyle’s recent LP Lovely Night Of Terror.

Now Kyle has revealed he visited Pete’s home in the South of France and will return soon to work with the Libertines rocker, right, again.

He said: “I was just over in France to see him, we’re talking about loads of stuff.

“It was all very arty. We were painting together, and talking about films.”

Pete’s last solo effort was 2025 album Felt Better Alive, while the last Libertines record was 2024’s All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade.

Two years ago Kyle moved to Alicante in Spain with his wife Laura and their four kids.

He now runs songwriting camps from his La Sierra Casa studio, and said: “The camp is getting bigger and better every year, and we’ve just moved to a new place.”

Lizzo is lapping up as much sun as she can before she kicks off the promo for her new album, Bitch.

The Truth Hurts singer shared this snap with her 11million Instagram followers with the caption: “Best Birthday Ever”.

Lizzo turned 38 last week and used her special day to announce the record, which is the follow-up to her 2022 album, Special.

Teasing what Bitch has in store, Lizzo said: “I think it’s always going to be the Lizzo sound.

“I posted a snippet of one of my new songs that’s coming out very, very soon and somebody was like, ‘The Nineties are back’.

“I love constructing and producing and creating just well-crafted music and songs.

“I hope everyone likes it.”

The trailer for Kylie Minogue’s new Netflix documentary has finally launched, leaving fans emotional over the singer’s journey

Fans have reacted with delight to a trailer for the new Netflix series about Kylie Minogue, in which she shares her own home movies and personal photographs for the first time. She is also seen close to tears talking about her cancer battle saying: “I was so scared of what was ahead of me.”

The actress and singer, 57, who allowed the cameras to follow her for a three-part documentary, teases at the start of the trailer: “They’re convincing me to let you in.”

One fan gushed: “She is everything that is right with the world, an inspiration, an icon.” While another agreed: “I’ve been a fan since she was in Neighbours and followed her ever since. This will be an emotional journey for all her true fans, can’t wait!”

The “intimate” films, released on May 20, will show how she has successfully reinvented herself many times, selling 80 million records along the way. There are clips of the Aussie soap star turned pop princess winning a Grammy and being chased down the street by fans shouting, “I love you Kylie.”

Talking about being photographed and filmed, she says: “I love the feeling around the shot. That feeling of freedom. I hate being boxed in.” And of her long and recording career, she declares: “Life makes sense to me on stage.” Hinting that she is a long way from hanging up her microphone, she adds: “I don’t know where we’re going. There’s certainly no end.”

Of her battle with breast cancer 21 years ago in 2005, when she was 36, Kylie admits: “I was so scared of what was ahead of me… f***!” Younger sister Dannii battles tears as she says: “We didn’t know if she was ever going to be well again. But I just wanted to be with my sister. Music kept us going.” One shocked fan reacted: “Almost 40 years in and the first time I’ve heard her swear! She is pure perfection.”

The pals that share their thoughts include Donovan, singer Nick Cave and hit-maker Pete Waterman, who put her on the path to superstardom all those years ago. Cave, her close friend with whom she recorded Where the Wild Roses Grow in 1995, explains: “Kylie is this force. It’s all outward. Giving.”

A smash-hit crime drama returning to Netflix and BBC later this month has just dropped an electrifying new trailer

Netflix and BBC viewers are ecstatic after getting their first look at one of the most highly anticipated returning shows of 2026.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, based on the series of books by Holly Jackson, first premiered on iPlayer and BBC Three in July 2024 and was later released to Netflix.

Now, fans of the series, which was once again filmed in Bristol and Somerset, will be able to stream the thrilling second season on either service from Wednesday, 27th May.

Ahead of the long-awaited premiere, a new trailer has been released teasing another gripping mystery for amateur sleuth Pip Fitz-Amobi (played by Emma Myers) to unravel.

Season two picks up with Pip and Ravi (Zain Iqbal) after cracking the case of missing student Andie Bell (India Lillie Davies) as Max Hastings (Henry Ashton) prepares for his trial.

However, while Pip is desperate to go back to her quiet life in Little Kilton, Connor’s (Jude Morgan-Collie) older brother, Jamie (Eden H Davies), a key witness in Max’s case, suddenly goes missing.

A synopsis for the six-part follow-up teases: “With the clock ticking and the stakes higher than ever, Pip and the group are thrust into a desperate, heart-pounding race to find him before it’s too late.

“As the search intensifies, Pip is pushed to her absolute limit, forced to face a terrifying reality, will she be able to save Jamie in time?”

Author Jackson is helming the adaptation this time along with showrunner Poppy Cogan, taking inspiration from the second novel in the bestselling series, Good Girl, Bad Blood.

This time around, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder will include newcomers such as Davies as Jamie, along with Misia Butler (KAOS) and Jack Rowan (Noughts + Crosses).

Fans were thrilled to get a more extensive look at the second series, which previews another high-stakes missing person investigation along with more drama between Pip and her friends and a reckoning for her vile nemesis, Max.

Audiences have described the series as “excellent”, a “fantastic adaptation”, and so “incredible” they “binged it in a day” in rave reviews on IMDb.

The new trailer for season two is also getting an enthusiastic response from fans on social media. One YouTube user exclaimed, “IM SOOO EXCITED!!!” and another commented, “WE’RE SO BACK”.

Thriller fanatics are “glued to their seat” with this “bloody brilliant” movie that isn’t one to miss.

Film buffs are hailing Netflix’s latest release as the “best FBI thriller ever made”.

Despite only dropping on Netflix a few days ago, the crime-thriller and slasher film Mindhunter has already made its way into the streamer top 10 most-watched list.

The 2004 movie follows seven elite FBI trainees, specialising in psychological profiling, left stranded on a remote island during a training exercise.

However, it is on the island that they discover that a real serial killer is among them and they must use their own skills to identify the murderer before it’s too late.

As well as the gripping premise, Mindhunters also boasts an impressive star-studded cast, including an NCIS icon.

Taking on the role of Agent Gabe Jensen is NCIS Los Angeles and NCIS Hawaii star LL Cool J.

He is joined by Top Gun actor Val Kilmer, Dexter: Original Sin’s Christian Slater, Cold Case actress Kathryn Morris, Trainspotting star Jonny Lee Miller and Band of Brothers’ Eion Bailey.

Fans haven’t been able to stop singing the film’s praises with many likening it to the Final Destination franchise with a crime drama twist.

“This movie is an example of a good thriller recipe”, someone began on IMdB.

“It has a graduate suspense, you never know how things will evolve and if you think you do, you are wrong. It combines psychological hints with rising terror and the result is breathtaking.”

A second wrote: “This script is a tight yarn with no extra ideas and no fat that needed amputation. It tries to deplore the Final Destination spirit within the gimmickless profiler milieu. And it works.”

Someone else posted: “Released in 2004, it has stood the test of time well and is viewed very fresh and well now.

“I do recommend this FBI mouse-cat-whodunnit-drama as it offers many thrills and holds you at the edge of your seat.

“Excellent nail-biting thriller where you never guess who the main culprit is till the very end.”

Another described it as “probably the best FBi thriller ever made” with a fellow fan adding: “Mindhunters is in my opinion a fantastic film with all the violence (not violence just for the sake of violence), the suspense and of course the very creative killings (Final Destinations).”

Netflix’s Unchosen has topped the streaming charts, but if you found this cult fantasy series underwhelming, there are four gripping alternatives

Unchosen landed on Netflix just over a week ago, with hordes of telly enthusiasts placing it at the top of their lists. Yet, I can’t claim I was particularly impressed by this dull, average cult fantasy.

I hoped to feel unsettled, I hoped to be mystified, but truthfully, this cult drama disappointed. This isn’t a criticism of Asa Butterfield, Molly Windsor and Fra Fre’s acting abilities, but when the script isn’t there to support you, there’s a limit to what can be achieved.

And all of this supposedly unfolding on my doorstep? Blimey, it wouldn’t shock me. I’ll need to keep my eyes peeled next time I head back to Surrey.

Like numerous Netflix smash hits, I’ve noticed the trailer contains more intrigue than the actual programme. Not that Unchosen was dreadful, it simply didn’t quite keep me gripped throughout, reports the Express.

To repeat the text displayed during Unchosen’s opening sequence: “Over 2,000 cults exist in the United Kingdom. Some are closed communities. But many, like this fictional one, live in plain sight.”

While these recommendations may not all centre on genuine cults, they definitely possess a cult-like atmosphere. They’re all wrapped in secrecy, seclusion, and propelled by a mission we ordinary folk won’t entirely grasp.

Here are some of the finest TV programmes, movies and documentaries centred on cults that might capture your attention… and lead you down a deep dive.

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey (2022)

This four-part documentary series delves into the harsh realities of growing up, living and escaping the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, an offshoot of mainstream Mormonism. Multiple members – and survivors – of the FLDS recount their experiences under the leadership of president Rulon Jeffs, who created the phrase that would become the series’ title, and his son Warren Jeffs.

At present, the younger Jeffs succeeded his father as the church’s leader. However, if this gives any indication about the practices exposed in the series, Jeffs is currently serving a life sentence for child sex offences.

Ex-members reveal the realities of existing under the church’s extreme regulations, and how the Jeffs’ wielded their authority over their congregation. We witness siblings, nieces and nephews forced into marriages with family members, with male church members having numerous wives and children.

Yet that’s not the most disturbing aspect of this documentary. It’s the forced marriage of actual teenagers and children to grown men. A medieval custom that belongs firmly in the past, not in contemporary society.

The series almost appears too far-fetched to be true, but then you recall it’s a documentary. The accusations and examination of child sex offences, human trafficking, child marriage, welfare fraud, and mistreatment of members and ex-members has shaped the outside world‘s perception of the church in recent times.

In a world riddled with double standards, this documentary exposes the shocking levels of moral corruption in people masquerading as followers of God’s teachings.

The Village (2004)

Haunted by mysterious, nameless beings, a tiny, isolated settlement in 19th century Pennsylvania exists in perpetual terror. Following a young resident’s death from sickness, Joaquin Phoenix’s Lucius Hunt seeks the elders’ approval to journey through the nearby forest for medical provisions.

When his plea is rejected, the reasoning given is to prevent further catastrophes. Romance develops between Lucius and the visually-impaired daughter of one of the village’s elders (Ivy, Bryce Dallas Howard), before Lucius sustains severe injuries.

I can’t delve too deeply into the storyline without revealing the conclusion, but Ivy sets out seeking assistance. Yet, appearances prove deceiving.

After all, M. Night Shyamalan is directing. There’s a revelation… there’s always a twist.

This thriller feeds on manipulation and falsehoods, essential tools for strengthening members’ conviction in their version of events. And bear in mind, it’s their version of reality, not ours.

The Wicker Man (1973 & 2006)

While the reimagining of The Wicker Man might not represent Nicolas Cage’s greatest performance, its initial commercial failure transformed into a devoted following over subsequent years. The narrative focuses on a police officer’s journey to a fictional remote island while investigating a disappeared girl.

The island’s residents have turned their backs on Christianity and now follow a type of Celtic paganism, but something far more sinister – naturally – is at play.

Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Movie (2015)

Scientology is one of those movements that’s lurked in the shadows of Hollywood for decades. One of your favourite actors or musicians has probably been linked with the organisation.

There’s nobody better equipped to attempt confronting the Church of Scientology than Louis Theroux, particularly after the church declines to participate in the documentary. In typical Louis Theroux fashion, nothing follows the usual script.

Rather, the documentary seeks to recreate testimonies from ex-members regarding incidents involving the church’s top brass, with assistance from former church official Mark Rathbun. Arguably one of the most striking moments from the documentary occurs when Louis and his team find themselves under surveillance and challenged outside the church’s mysterious Gold Base compound in California.

Intimidation seems to be a recurring pattern that extends beyond the documentary itself. Ex-members of the organisation have, over the years, described their encounters with being confronted while carrying out their daily routines – and voicing criticism of Scientology.

It makes for a deeply strange and maddening viewing experience, as we never truly grasp the extent to which the church is allegedly pulling strings behind the scenes. This film brought Scientology to widespread public attention, and even in an age where information is readily available, there remains so much mystery surrounding L. Ron Hubbard’s doctrines and David Miscavige’s tenure as the church’s second leader.

British crime thriller Prey has finally landed on Netflix and is already one of the most-watched shows.

*Warning contains spoilers* Prey originally aired on ITV from 2014 to 2015. The two-season thriller follows two criminal cases involving police officers in the Manchester area, with DS Susan Reinhart (Rosie Cavaliero) investigating both.

Grace icon John Simm stars in the first season as DC Marcus Farrow. The detective found himself in a tight spot when his ex-wife and sons were brutally murdered, and all of the criminal evidence points to him.

He is able to flee when the police van transporting him crashes, and Farrow runs off so he can find out who really murdered his family.

After taking the investigation into his own hands, Farrow discovers that it was DS Reinhardt’s boss, DCI Andrea MacKenzie (Anastasia Hille), who had been responsible for their deaths.

Life on Mars actor Philip Glenister leads the cast in the second season as he plays prison officer David Murdoch.

When Murdoch accompanies inmate Jules Hope (MyAnna Buring) on a routine hospital visit, he receives a call informing him his pregnant daughter Lucy (Sammy Winward) has been kidnapped, and he must follow the captors’ orders if he wants her to live.

Prey features a wealth of acting talent across the two seasons, including EastEnders’ Heather Peace, Doctor Strange’s Benedict Wong, Adrian Edmondson, Harry Potter’s Ralph Ineson, and Line of Duty’s Craig Parkinson.

At the time of writing, Prey is currently in the #5 position in Netflix’s UK TV chart, according to FlixPatrol. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series is also rated 100% on the Tomatometer.

The series has proved a hit with viewers, with many taking to IMDb to share their thoughts. “Great series, worth the time and a good binge watch – Brits do it best!” penned one viewer.

Another said, “I can’t believe that I just found this gem. Outstanding acting from virtually everyone, non-stop action, great storyline. Every character is so believable, so real. Three episodes, so well done!”.

Elsewhere, another fan wrote: “Absolutely loved this action packed thriller” to which a different account added: “Although John Simm is excellent in every role he plays I really thought this was one of the best.”

Prey seasons one and two are available to watch on Netflix

Netflix fans are “obsessing” over this “inspiring” movie with an abundance of Hollywood talent.

“Genuinely one of the best movies in years” is quickly climbing up the Netflix charts.

American Sniper stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller reunite for the 2015 comedy-drama Burnt, a culinary film about a brilliant but disgraced chef.

After destroying career with his temperamental behaviour, he tries to clean up his act and moves to London in a relentless pursuit to open a Michelin star restaurant.

Burnt may have only just been released on Netflix but it’s already made its already one of the streamer’s most-watched films, coming in at number eight in the charts.

And it’s easy to understand why with fans flooding Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb with high praise for the film from more than a decade ago.

While someone labelled it a “severely underrated movie”, another wrote: “If you like shows like House M.D. or Elementary… Ignore the reviewers. You’ll love this movie. I’ve been obsessed with it for years now.”

A third echoed: “This is an absolutely brilliant movie. Great acting, realistic scenes and great tempo. I highly recommend it!”

“I rarely feel so motivated and inspired after a movie”, someone else said. “So, my thanks to the director, writers, actors and producers for creating this movie!”

Others described it as “raw and incredible” and “truly excellent”, with someone commenting that it’s “one of my favourite films of all time”.

Another simply added: “Genuinely one of the best movies in years.”

Cooper and Miller aren’t the only fan-favourite stars to get excited about either in this comedy-drama.

They are joined by other mega stars like Kill Bill legend Uma Thurman, Tomb Raider’s Alicia Vikander, Mamma Mia icon Lily James and Love Actually star Emma Thompson.

The hit show has been called “cowboy Virgin River” by fans.

Netflix’s Ransom Canyon has officially announced a release date for its eagerly awaited second season, and fans won’t have to wait much longer.

The popular Western drama launched last April and brought viewers an epic family saga unfolding on a Texas ranch, with the powerful romance between Staten Kirkland (portrayed by Josh Duhamel) and Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly) taking centre stage.

The first season exposed the shocking truth surrounding the death of Staten’s son while the stoic rancher slowly grows closer to Quinn, his long-time family friend and proprietor of the local dancehall.

At the same time, charming and mysterious drifter Yancy (Jack Schumacher) arrives in town to reconnect with his long-lost grandfather and embarks on a romance of his own, only to unveil a startling secret in the jaw-dropping finale.

The programme has drawn favourable comparisons to Netflix’s other hit small-town romance, Virgin River, with some Redditors even declaring the new series is “so much better”, reports the Express.

Netflix Tudum has this week announced that the gripping drama will return on Thursday, 23rd July, with all eight episodes dropping.

Creator April Blair has disclosed that the much-anticipated follow-up will resume six months after Quinn’s decision to leave home to chase a dream job in New York.

“In that time, she didn’t speak to Staten at all,” actress Kelly disclosed. And Duhamel confirms: “He missed her. Staten has been masking that with his behaviour.

“So when he finds out Quinn is back, Staten realises that he’s made some mistakes, and he wants to make it right.”

Season two will also follow the blossoming teenage romance between high schoolers Lauren (Lizzy Greene) and Lucas (Garrett Wareing), while Yancy is likely in hot water with bartender Ellie (Marianly Tejada) following the arrival of a woman claiming to be his wife in the season finale.

“We’ve also built out the world even more this season,” showrunner Blair reveals. “Quinn’s mother, Claire – played by Patricia Clarkson, who’s an icon – comes to town, and she’s a little Postcards from the Edge meets The Notebook.

“What did she do to mess up? We find out there’s some secrets from the past.”

Alongside Clarkson, several fresh faces join the cast, including High Potential’s Steve Howey as Staten’s half-brother Levi, a rugged outdoorsman who lives off the land.

Some believe it was ignored when the Oscar awards were handed out that year

A favourite of an Oscar winning filmmaker can now be streamed on Netflix.

In the latest update of the streaming platform’s library, a 2024 horror fantasy title said to become a generation’s favourite cult movie. I Saw The TV Glow is now available to users of the platform.

The film stars Justice Smith and Jack Haven as Owen and Maddy, two dispirited teenagers who bond over a late night Buffy The Vampire style show called The Pink Opaque, which offers up a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. However, following traumatic events, the lines between the show and reality soon begin to crack.

It boasts an impressive 85% on website Rotten Tomatoes and earned many rave reviews although it was overlooked on the awards circuit. Something which lead to one critic claiming that “the Oscars and Golden Globes criminally overlooked” the film. However it did manage to receive praise from Hollywood royalty.

Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese singled it out as one of his favourite films of that year. In an interview with AP in late 2024, the maker of Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street, said: “There was one film I liked a great deal I saw two weeks ago called I Saw the TV Glow.

“It really was emotionally and psychologically powerful and very moving. It builds on you, in a way. I didn’t know who made it. It’s this Jane Schoenbrun.”

Scorsese was not alone in his praise as Rolling Stone magazine declared it is ‘Gen Z’s new favourite cult movie.’ Many fans also joined in with their recommendation.

Most admitted to feeling deeply affected by the film, as one said: “This movie hit me hard. Resonated with me so deeply I had to cry through the credits, ruminating on my own life. I think anyone who grew up as an outcast/weird kid, especially in a suburb will relate to the film and characters struggles.”

One more thing this is my opinion but the plot twist was WAY better than The Sixth Sense.”

Netflix is set to bring this “unsettling” best-selling novel to life sooner than you think.

Severance and The Godfather legends are teaming up for a Netflix thriller that will leave your “flesh crawling”.

Based on Alex North’s New York Times best-selling novel of the same name, The Whisper Man is making its way to Netflix on Friday, August 28.

The official synopsis for the upcoming “disturbing” film reads: “When his eight-year-old son is abducted, a widowed crime writer looks to his estranged father, a retired former police detective, for help, only to discover a connection with the decades-old case of a convicted serial killer known as ‘The Whisper Man.’”

What’s even more exciting about The Whisper Man’s pending arrival is its star-studded cast.

The Netflix thriller will star Severance legend Adam Scott, Hollywood icon Robert De Niro and The White Lotus actress Michelle Monaghan.

While subscribers wait to see how the movie will play out, The Whisper Man already has a loyal fanbase of book lovers ready to watch the adaptation.

Taking to Amazon Prime to sing the book’s praises, a fan shared: “This is one of the most gripping and mind-blowing books I have read this year, and it takes suspense and terror to a whole new thrilling level.”

Half Man is Richard Gadd’s next major show after his global success with Netflix’s Baby Reindeer.

Richard Gadd is Half Man’s creator and executive producer but he wasn’t always going to star in the BBC drama.

After they find themselves unexpectedly living together, Ruben (played by Stuart Campbell) and Niall (Mitchell Robertson) become like brothers, one fierce and loyal, the other meek and mild-mannered.

Over the course of six episodes, Half Man follows the pairs’ lives over the next 30 years until Niall’s (Jamie Bell) wedding day and violent Ruben ( Richard Gadd ) brings trouble.

While Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd created and executive produced this new BBC series, he wasn’t initially going to portray Ruben.

It wasn’t until he was convinced that he was right for the part by Billy Elliot icon Jamie Bell that he decided to take on the ruthless role.

Speaking at a Q&A with the BBC, Gadd explained: “I wasn’t going to do it to begin with.

“I wasn’t going to do Ruben, because acting in something and directing and doing everything else is a lot.

“You have to see a show from the inside and the outside which is actually the main pressure of the role.

“So I wasn’t going to do it, I didn’t want to do it. Baby Reindeer was out and that’d take one thing off my plate.

“But Jamie [Bell] was the first to suggest it. He was like ‘have you ever thought about doing this?’

“And it sort of terrified me in a way. I was like ‘Wow. That’s real far.’

“But I often feel that what scares you in life, you should probably do it.”

While Gadd’s co-star Jamie Bell shot to fame as Billy Elliot in the iconic 2000 film, he is set to take on another unforgettable role.

Bell will be joining the Peaky Blinders universe in the upcoming two-season sequel as Tommy Shelby’s (Cillian Murphy) son Duke Shelby in the 1950s.

The role of Duke was originally portrayed by Saltburn star Barry Keoghan in the Netflix film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

Half Man premieres on Tuesday, April 28, at 10.40pm on BBC One.

Last year, studios and Hollywood labor unions lobbied hard to ensure animated movies and shows could compete for California’s expanded film and television tax credit program.

The payoff came last week, when three animated movies were among the nearly 40 film projects that received a production incentive in the latest round of awards, the California Film Commission announced Thursday.

Walt Disney Co.-owned 20th Century Studios received $21.9 million for “The Simpsons Movie 2,” Disney Entertainment Television got $3.5 million for “Phineas and Ferb” and DreamWorks Animation was awarded $24.7 million in credit allocation for a yet-untitled animated film.

The three are the first animated feature films to receive tax credits from the state of California. (Last month, two animated shows — a spin-off of “Rick and Morty” and “Stewie,” which branches off from the “Family Guy” cartoon — also received tax credits.)

I spoke with DreamWorks Animation Chief Operating Officer Randy Lake about the award, which he called a “potential game changer” for the Glendale-based studio known for the “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda” franchises.

“Unlike live-action, our projects are years long,” he said. “You’re talking about not just a job for six or nine months on set. It’s literally three or four years that these projects can take. It’s long-term employment.”

Like most of Hollywood, the animation industry has suffered from the effects of the 2023 dual writers’ and actors’ strikes, as well as the retrenchment in studio spending after the initial rush to invest in content for streaming services.

And like much of U.S. film and TV work — particularly in California — the animation business has been deeply affected by the increasingly rich tax credits offered by other countries.

Over the last 15 years, countries including Canada and Ireland have slowly built up animation hubs, aided by their local talent and lucrative production incentives specific to animation and visual effects.

For instance, visual effects and computer animation unit Sony Pictures Imageworks, which Lake ran for years, relocated its Culver City headquarters to Vancouver more than a decade ago.

DreamWorks, too, has outsourced work to partner studios, particularly in Vancouver and Montreal, as costs in the U.S. have increased and studios face pressure to rein in their production expenses while theatrical box-office revenue has become less reliable.

Just three years ago, DreamWorks cut about 70 jobs across its corporate functions, feature films, TV and technology departments. In 2024, Disney-owned computer animation studio Pixar laid off about 175 employees as it pulled back on its production of streaming series.

But with the recent tax credit allocation, DreamWorks will hire about 100 people in California for its upcoming untitled film. Those jobs would probably would have been outsourced to a third-party studio, Lake said. Keeping all of the jobs on that film in California helps improve collaboration among the teams and foster more creativity, he said. Today, DreamWorks has about 1,000 employees.

To understand why the new incentives are meaningful, consider that a DreamWorks Animation movie similar to the one that received the credit will typically have a crew of about 400 to 500 people.

That film is a big feature, though Lake declined to share details since the project hasn’t been announced.

Both the Animation Guild and studios have pointed to the incentive as a way to bring back animation jobs to the Golden State.

“Studios have been chasing animation tax credits in other states and countries for years, so it’s incredibly rewarding to see them use California’s for the very first time,” Marissa Bernstel, a trustee on the union’s executive board and member of the task force that helped lobby for the expanded production incentives, said in a statement last week. “The results feel very real, and I’m excited to see what future employment opportunities the incentive inspires.”

Lake said DreamWorks hopes to take advantage of the state incentives for all of its full-budget films.

“We’ll be applying for the next window,” he said, adding that he hoped they will be successful so “we’ll be able to have more and more of our films be fully produced in state. That’s the goal.”

Lionsgate’s “Michael” had a massive opening weekend with just over $217 million in global box-office revenue. In the U.S. and Canada, the Michael Jackson biopic hauled in about $97 million, far surpassing studio expectations.

The film, which stars Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the late singer, chronicles the pop star’s rise from his early days in the Jackson 5 through the growth of his solo career. The movie ends in 1988 while Jackson is on tour for his hit album “Bad.”

The premiere for “Michael” marks the biggest domestic opening for any biopic, musical or otherwise. The 2015 movie “Straight Outta Compton” previously held the record for highest opening weekend total for a musical biopic, with $60 million in the U.S. and Canada, followed by the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 2018, which had a $51.1-million domestic opening.

Critics’ reviews of “Michael,” however, were largely negative. Many noted the plot sidesteps the child sexual abuse allegations against Jackson and said the film presents a more one-dimensional view of the singer.

An earlier cut of the film did end in 1993 and addressed the allegations, but that ending had to be scrapped due to a clause in a legal settlement with an accuser that stipulated he could never be pictured or mentioned in a dramatization of Jackson’s life. Jackson and his estate have denied that the pop star abused children.

I finally finished the Hulu series “Paradise” this last week, which kept me guessing about literally everything all the way until the end. I’m interested in seeing where this genre-morphing show goes next season.
