The Night Manager star Tom Hiddleston has issued a warning as he teased a season two betrayal. Tom reprised his role as Jonathan Pine in the popular thriller series earlier this month.
The inaugural season, which aired in 2016, centred around Jonathan, the night manager of a luxury Cairo hotel, who was enlisted by Angela Burr (Olivia Colman), head of a Foreign Office task force probing illicit arms sales. Jonathan’s assignment was to infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie).
The eagerly-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed spy drama sees Jonathan embroiled in a volatile new case. He is currently living under the alias Alex Goodwin, a low-ranking MI6 officer overseeing a discreet surveillance unit in London, but an unexpected encounter soon throws his life into chaos.
The first episode, which premiered on New Year’s Day (January 1), saw Jonathan and his colleagues, Waleed and Graham, journey to Barcelona to keep tabs on shady Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva). Unfortunately, the mission took a tragic turn when Teddy discovered he was under surveillance, reports the Express.
Waleed (Anil Desai) and Graham (Alex Mugnaioni) were gunned down moments before the hotel erupted in a devastating blaze. A grief-stricken Jonathan, alongside his surviving colleague, Sally (Hayley Squires), subsequently journeyed to Colombia to infiltrate Teddy’s criminal network, after MI6 bosses believed that Jonathan had died in the explosion.
Once in South America, Jonathan discovered that Teddy was actually Richard Roper’s estranged son, determined to continue the family’s illicit empire. The covert agent soon became entangled in Teddy’s inner circle, with the two developing a compelling dynamic alongside Teddy’s business partner Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone).
Speaking to press ahead of the show’s premiere last month, lead actor Tom revealed: “The dynamic extends across the next [four] episodes, which is, you get the sense of it, I think, in the trailer, of what’s coming. Pine is now all the way in, and he’s lost his crew. He’s lost his people, so there’s no way back, and he’s got to chase Teddy all the way.
“And along the way, he encounters Roxana again. But as you see, he has to create another identity to seduce them both in a way, to get intimate with them both, to get close to them both to try and win their trust in order to extract information that he desperately needs.
“So, that dance is a dance of seduction and betrayal, but the direction of travel is not one way… It is a true triangle in the sense that you’re never quite sure who has the power.”
He went on: “You’re never quite sure what the allegiances are, and it’s really brilliantly done by David [Farr, screenwriter]. It’s perfectly created, and it’s really thrilling to play. We just had the best time. [There are] fantastic scenes and it is about this extended game of chess, if you like, or something where you’re not quite sure what the next move is going to be.”
Roxana star Camila explained: “The dynamic between Diego and I was difficult to understand in the beginning because there was kind of this brotherly sister love. We could have maybe been together [as] lovers in another life, and yet this character would put a bullet through Roxana at any given moment if he needed to.
“[These are] the kind of people you’re dealing with and the kind of world in which these characters are living, and how high the stakes are. So, it was interesting to play… It was interesting to have so much love and yet both of [them] at all times have a gun pointed under the table at each other.”
The new series also features Indira Varma as Mayra and Paul Chahidi as Basil, alongside returning cast members Alistair Petrie as Sandy Langbourne, Douglas Hodge as Rex Mayhew, Michael Nardone as Frisky, and Noah Jupe as Daniel Roper.
The Night Manager airs every Sunday at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
