SITTING between two eastern European countries is a place nicknamed the ‘Galapagos of Europe’.

Despite being thousands of miles from the Galapagos Islands, Lake Ohrid is often compared to the region famous for its wildlife.

Lake Ohrid has even been described by scientists as “a museum of living fossils.”

One of the rare creatures that you’ll only find in the lake is the Ohrid trout, otherwise known as ‘koran’.

Fishermen are often up early to catch the trout which is a delicacy in the surrounding cities, towns and villages.

Other rare animals living in and around the lake include the Balkan whip snake.

There are also eels, various endemic snails, and birds like Dalmatian pelicans.

Despite the wildlife, Lake Ohrid is safe for swimming and is very popular during the summer months.

The water can be chilly though, ranging from between 14C to 24C depending on the season.

There’s plenty of room to explore as the lake is around 19 miles long and nine miles wide, with a shoreline that stretches on for around 54 miles.

It’s also one of the deepest lakes on the continent with a maximum depth of nearly 300 metres.

Visitors can explore the lake by hiking or biking along the shoreline, or get on the water on a boat cruise.

On Tripadvisor, one visitor described Lake Ohrid as a “piece of paradise”.

Another added: “This is a beautiful part of the world that once seen, is never forgotten.”

Back on shore, Lake Ohrid is surrounded by three main towns – Ohrid and Struga in North Macedonia, and Pogradec in Albania.

Other must-visit spots around the lake include some of the pretty villages.

In North Macedonia, Trpejca is considered one of the most charming and traditional villages.

It’s even been referred to as the ‘Saint-Tropez‘ of the lake thanks to its white shingle shoreline and beautiful waterfront houses.

Other top spots include the Albanian fishing village of Lin which has stone houses, narrow cobbled streets, and incredible views across the lake.

One convenient route for Brits to explore the lake is by flying into Tirana which can be done in under 30-minutes and as little as £13 with Wizz Air.

From there, Lake Ohrid is a 90-minute drive away.

WHEN booking a holiday to Italy, most will head to the likes of Naples, Sicily or Rome.

But if you’re looking for a lesser-known spot that still has beautiful beaches and a unique fortress, the port city of Crotone could be one for you.

Crotone in Italy‘s region of Calabria was revealed to be one of the best ‘under-the-radar’ destinations for 2026 by Conde Nast Traveller.

It came just below Turku in Finland and Thunder Bay in Canada – but for Brits, Crotone is much easier and cheaper to get to.

The publication said: “A little lower down from Bari, on the heel of the “boot” of Italy, lies Crotone: a port city overlooking the Ionian Sea.

“Surrounded by luscious hills and littered with ancient remnants of the acropolis built in the mid-16th century, Crotone is also known for its floating fortress – Capo Rizzuto – that protrudes out on a small peninsula.”

The port city, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘pearl of Calabria’ sits on the boot of Italy in the south of the country.

The seaside spot was also once a Greek colony that was the home of Pythagoras.

Now, the city is home to around 58,000 people – meaning it’s much quieter than other popular spots like Rome which is home to millions.

As for what to do there, Crotone’s harbour is central to the city where visitors will discover a lively spot for local seafood markets and restaurants, or you can explore the history of the Old Town.

The Old Town is the spot for nightlife too, with plenty of bars and a pint can be picked up for only €3 (£2.59).

If lazing about on the beach is what you want to do, there are lots of pretty ones to see in Crotone along the Ionian coast like Le Castella and Marinella.

Further down the coast at Capo Colonna, snorkelling and diving is popular as swimmers are likely to see parrotfish, and potentially loggerhead turtles.

While it might not be the most-visited place, it is popular amongst those who have.

On Tripadvisor, one person described it as an “indescribable place, almost every year I visit and always bring people who have never seen our Calabrian beauties and it is always a discovery.”

During peak summer Crotone can be as high as 35C – ideal if you’re looking for a hot holiday.

One draw back to Crotone is that Brits can’t fly there directly – with Ryanair, you can get to Crotone by flying via airports at Milan or Bologna.

But this does keep flights affodable though – the cheapest average price of flights are around £62 return.

PLANS for a mega new city centre leisure facility costing £36million have been unveiled.

The first designs include two swimming pools, a cafe, a family play area, health and wellbeing rooms, a fitness suite, and a number of studios.

Peterborough City Council said plans have been finalised after consultation with residents, with further details set to go on public display at a drop-in session on Tuesday, May 19.

A planning application is due to be submitted in July, with construction at the Embankment site set to begin early next year.

The sports hub will then open in 2028, housing the city’s only public indoor swimming pool after Peterborough’s Regional Pool was demolished last year due to structural issues.

It is set to have a 25-metre eight-lane pool, as well as another 20-metre activity pool with a movable floor, among a range of other facilities.

Members of the public will have an opportunity to talk to the design team at the drop-in session later this month, with further information provided on sustainability, floor plans, timelines, and transport options.

Jamie Fenton, culture, sports and leisure partnership manager at the council, said: “We know that residents are still feeling the loss of the Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre and that is why we are moving as quickly as we can to deliver a new, modern facility for the city.

“We had a fantastic response to the initial engagement activity earlier in the year and we have used what people told us to develop the next phase of planning and designs.”

He added: “It is really exciting to be at a stage where we can show these to people and start having conversations around what a new leisure development will offer our residents.”

According to the council, £20million of the site’s funding has come from the government’s Growth Mission Fund, while £16million has been committed by the authority.

The development is still looking for private funding and grants “to assist with the costs”.

ONE popular UK attraction often considered a ‘time-warp town’ is set to reopen next month after months of closure.

Blists Hill is a living Victorian Museum that allows visitors to step into the 1900s with a period pub, pharmacy, and school, and there are even Shire horses trotting about the streets.

Blists Hill closed in February of this year after being taken over by the National Trust.

Now, it’s understood the site is set to open next month, but the exact dates haven’t been announced yet.

The National Trust said on its website: “Details of timings and prices will follow on our website in the next few weeks.”

For those who are keen to visit, the Victorian town is found in Shropshire and is a completely immersive experience.

There are staff in costume working in the businesses like ironmaking – which is what the site was originally used for in the 18th and 19th century.

Blists Hill even has resident Shire horses like George and Bernie, who provide carriage rides around the town.

It was late last year that that the National Trust announced it would take over the running of certain museums once operated by Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, like Blists Hill, with the help of a £9million grant.

The National Trust will oversee 10 museums and 35 listed buildings, with some sites opening “in a phased fashion” over the year.

For example, Toll House in Ironbridge, a small museum on the historic Iron Bridge, is set to reopen in mid-June

When Travel Writer Ryan Gray stepped into Victorian life, he confessed his favourite spots were the pub and chip shop.

He said: “The first cast member greet me was a friendly policeman, Guy Rowlands, who has been working on the site for more than 20 years. He also leads the singalongs in the New Inn, the on-site working pub, which takes place every afternoon.

“Staff recommended I take a bag of chips into the pub to enjoy with a pint on arrival, but as I was driving, I settled for a dandelion and burdock instead.

“Nevertheless, I was still able to enjoy the incredible levels of detail throughout the bar, including old local football fixtures written in cursive on the blackboard and ‘wanted’ posters hung up on the wall.”

Prior to its closure, Blists Hill was open from 10am to 4pm every day, with the museum advising customers to allow for up to four hours to explore it fully.

An adult day ticket to the site is £27, with a £30 option also available.

Open year-round, this Hackney pool is also Olympic-sized and is at its busiest during the warm summer months.

Oasis Sports Centre

Measuring 27.5 metres, this Camden pool offers a consistent temperature of 25 degrees all summer long, and is described as one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

Swim sessions are available for all levels, lasting 50 minutes at a time until 5pm on weekdays and 4pm on weekends, with other facilities also available, including a gym, sports studios, squash courts, and a sauna.

Also located in London, this 33-metre pool also maintains a comfortable temperature of 25 degrees.

It features easy step access and floodlighting so you can swim early in the morning and into the evening during the off-season too.

Abbey Meadows Outdoor Pool

Located in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, Abbey Meadows Outdoor Pool measures 25 metres and there’s even a free splash pad next door.

A kiosk offering light refreshments is also available on-site, from 9am until 6pm.

Riverside Park and Pools

This 23-metre outdoor pool is also heated, making it the ideal spot for a family day out in Wallingford, South Oxfordshire.

There’s even a splash park for your little ones, as well as an on-site cafe and a nearby campsite.

Woodstock Open Air Pool

Measuring 25 metres, Woodstock Open Air Pool, also in Oxfordshire, features four lanes for swimming as well as a diving board.

This pool is open from May 24 until July 20, with changing facilities, hot showers, a cafe, and picnic area all on site.

IF you want to find natural phenomena like rich pink lagoons, you would think you’d have to go as far as Egypt or even Australia.

But actually, there’s one just two hours away from the UK – and it happens to be one of the most affordable coastlines of Spain.

Laguna Rosa is one of Europe’s only naturally pink lakes and it’s on the Costa Blanca coastline just outside of Torrevieja.

Flights to the nearest airport of Alicante can take as little as two hours and 15-minutes.

Laguna Rosa, or going by its official name Laguna de Torrevieja, is a pink salt lake that stretches across 1400 hectares.

It’s famous for its bright pink colourcaused by halobacteria (a microorganism) and Dunaliella salina (a type of algae), which are both naturally pink in color and release a pigment into the water.

The high concentration of salt in the lake means that technically you’d be able to actually float in the water – but swimming here is actually banned.

For the best chance of a deep pink lake, holidaymakers should aim to visit the lake between June to October.

Otherwise, make sure to head there during late August and early September where you’ll see as many as 2,000 flamingos in its shallow water.

Laguna Rosa is just one place to stop by on a visit to Costa Blanca which has been dubbed a ‘dupe’ for far-flung Red Sea-style escape.

Other popular spots around Torrevieja include Tabarca Island, is about an hour by boat from Alicante.

It has crystal-clear waters, calm coves, and is a sought out snorkelling destination with plenty of marine life to see – which is why it’s been compared to the Red Sea.

Back on land, a place where you can relax in amongst nature is Elche’s UNESCO-listed palm grove.

Here you can find shade under more than 200,000 palm trees.

If you want to see even more pink, the city of Elche even has its own palace that looks pink in the sun.

Palau d’Altamira is a fortress built during the 11th and 13th centuries – and rebuilt later on too.

Now, it’s a museum full of artefacts showing off the history of Elche.

When it comes to getting a bite to eat, the region has its own signature dish called ‘caldero’.

It’s a rich fish stew cooked with fresh local catch and rice.

The Costa Blanca coastline is cheap too. TravelSupermarket worked out that the average price of a holiday per person is £566.

In Alicante, which is the capital of the region, you can pick up beer for €3 (£2.61), coffee from €1.89 (£1.64) and a meal for as little as £13.

And when it comes to where to stay First Choice recommends Albir Garden Resort.

Families can base themselves at Albir Garden Resort which pools with aqua park’s slides and fountains, buffet restaurants and a kids’ club with daily activities.

Each one bedroom apartments accommodation comes with a lounge area, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and balcony.

Holidays here start from £442pp.

In 2011, it was a video of the duo, who were then eight and five, respectively, performing a cover of “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj that caught the attention of US megastar Ellen DeGeneres.

She invited them to fly across to the US to appear as guests on her eponymous show, which led to a regular slot for the girls and exposure to fans across the pond, who fell in love with the tutu-wearing duo and their British charm.

The girls had their own segment on the show where they would chat with A-listers, from Justin Bieber to Hugh Grant and Taylor Swift. This then led to them bagging appearances on Nickelodeon show Sam and Cat, which featured Ariana Grande in the titular role, and their own movie by the channel, Sophia Grace & Rosie’s Royal Adventure.

However, as Sophia Grace and Rosie got older, the high-flying opportunities also came to a halt, with the young women no longer as in demand as their younger selves once were.

A close friend of the cousins tells The Sun: “People don’t realise how intense it was back then for the girls. One minute Sophia and Rosie were just kids playing dress-up, and the next they were everywhere – on TV, interviews and cashing in on big brand deals. 

“It felt like the world couldn’t get enough of them. But that kind of spotlight doesn’t really grow with you, it stays frozen in time.

“I remember when things started to shift. It wasn’t dramatic, the calls just slowed down. Not because they weren’t talented, but because they weren’t those tiny girls in tutus that the world couldn’t help but fall in love with anymore. The industry loves a moment, it’s not always about the person behind it.”

Now, Sophia Grace is a doting mum-of-two and often shares mumfluencer content with her little ones to her Instagram page, which still boasts an impressive 1.5 million followers.

Whilst Rosie, who has just shy of one million followers, is an aspiring pop star and often shares music videos and new songs to her profile.

Despite the pair still successful online, that doesn’t mean it’s been an easy transition, as they navigated being shunned from Hollywood for simply growing up.

The friend said: “They had to go through that strange identity thing a lot of child stars face. Like, who am I if I’m not that version of me everyone fell in love with? It’s not just about losing jobs, it’s about outgrowing a character the whole world still expects you to be.

“There was definitely a period where it hurt. They’d worked so hard, and suddenly it felt like they had to prove themselves all over again, but as completely different people. That’s exhausting, especially when your past success kind of boxes you in.”

This had the girls thinking about what is next as they reinvented their careers, rather than remaining stuck.

“What people don’t see is how much strength it took for them to step back and rethink everything. They didn’t just cling to what used to work. They had to start asking bigger questions like what do we actually enjoy now? What kind of life do we want outside of all that?

“They’ve had to evolve and figure out who they are without the glitz glam and cameras. And I think that was harder than actually being famous in the first place.

“There’s something bittersweet about it. Now they’re building something quieter, more personal and it actually belongs fully to them this time.”

Child stars who have been catapulted to fame so young are famously at risk of falling victim to the “curse”, which has seen numerous celebrities fall off the wagon after earning their careers at such a young age.

From Drew Barrymore to Macaulay Culkin and Britney Spears, several stars have spoken out about their struggles with mental health, addiction, financial issues and more after being put under such pressure so young.

But Sophia Grace and Rosie have managed to successfully manage becoming household names so young whilst avoiding being plagued with the curse.

“People always expect a sad ending with child stars, like it’s inevitable that something will go wrong once the spotlight fades. But that was never going to be their story,” said the friend.

Explaining how they managed to remain grounded, they said that the pair have always been “normal and down to earth”, even when things were “unpredictable” in their careers.

“Sophia was always the one with that natural warmth. Even as a kid, she had this way of making people feel comfortable around her, what you saw was exactly what you got,” said our insider.

“Becoming a mum didn’t change her either, it’s been the making of her. She talks a lot about wanting to give her child stability, something consistent and safe, because she knows firsthand how unusual her own childhood was.

“What people see online is only a small window into their world – behind the scenes she’s very careful, and very protective of her family life. She’s also been smart financially, which people don’t expect. She made sure early on that she wasn’t just spending what she earned, she was thinking about the future. She’s got investments, savings and she’s financially fine for a very long time.”

And for Rosie, it seems that music was always the long-term plan.

“She stepped back, took time to grow up outside of the spotlight, build up her confidence and then came back to it on her own terms. That’s something I really admire about her. She’s spent years working on her voice, writing, figuring out what she actually wants to say as an artist instead of trying to recreate something from the past. 

“There’s a lot of discipline there, and a kind of quiet confidence that people may have otherwise overlooked. She’s not chasing attention at all because she’s building something meaningful and long term.

“The thing that really stands out about both of them is that they never lost themselves in it. They had good people around them from early on, family who kept things steady and didn’t let the fame become everything. And they listened to that. They made choices that weren’t the flashiest, but they were the right ones for the lives they all wanted.”

The duo were also meticulously careful about money, our source says, despite having an influx of earnings so young.

“At the end of the day, they didn’t just grow out of being child stars, they grew into adults with lives that are  real and wonderful. And that’s something you can’t fake for likes.”

HE’s the man whose been putting a smile on Katie Price’s face in her online videos – but it’s not her new husband Lee Andrews.

Last month, the former glamour model was hit with a six-month driving ban – her seventh one to date – and has had to find other means of getting around.

Thankfully, Katie hasn’t had to look too far from home for help, with cameraman Ben Algar taking on unofficial chauffeur duties of late.

As a result, ‘Big Ben’ – as he’s nicknamed – has found himself on the other side of the lens, making an increased appearance in her unfiltered day-in-the-life videos on her socials – and it’s not escaped fan attention.

“The whole family love him- he’s a really great friend to Katie and the entire Price gang. They all think he’s a legend.”

The Sun has reached out to representatives for Katie Price.

Ben is such a trusted ally, in fact that he even has a sweet relationship with her children – most notably Harvey, who has been back home with Katie over Easter.

Katie’s eldest even has a cute nickname for Ben, who is a dad-of-five himself, and calls him ‘Bouncy Ben’.

It’s a stark difference to new husband Lee Andrews who is yet to meet his new wife’s brood.

A video shared in late December saw another Ben appearance, with the caption reading: “Our secret camera man showing himself.”

The reality TV star revealed in it how he’s known as ‘Bouncy Ben’ to Harvey and shared the anecdote behind it.

“Harvey calls him Bouncy Ben because when Harvey was smaller, Ben used to lift him up and bounce him like that,” she said on camera, doing an impression of a toddler being thrown into the air.

“But we tried to explain to Harvey that Bouncy Ben can’t do that anymore.

“One, because you’re bigger than Ben now and you weigh a ton and a half,” she added, before Ben cut in: “And two, I’m not that strong.”

Ben’s closeness to Katie and her clan must be something of a blow to Lee, whose distance is claimed to be due to a travel technicality.

There is ongoing speculation that the 43-year-old is unable to leave the United Arab Emirates city after allegedly forging his ex-girlfriend Dina Taji’s signature to secure a £200,000 loan – something he’s strongly denied.

But air miles aside, Katie revealed in an interview on Good Morning Britain that she “wants to get to know him more” before they meet in real life, even if the kids have spoken to Lee over FaceTime.

Lee’s travel ban isn’t the only scandal that’s come out about him, with Katie’s fourth husband having used AI to fake photos with Kim Kardashian and Elon Musk to drum up interest in his business, Aura Group.

The ‘Walter Mitty’ businessman has also been accused of scamming women by his ex-girlfriend Alana Percival, who he popped the question to in a nigh-on identical proposal to Katie’s.

Lee has strongly denied all claims, but the allegations haven’t eased her family’s concerns.

Buddy Ben’s frequent presence therefore couldn’t come at a better time for worried loved ones, who we’re told is quietly monitoring the marriage.

“Ben has definitely been concerned about some of Katie’s relationships and her marriage to Lee is no different,” our source tells us.

“Like Katie’s family who have some very valid worries about Lee, Ben is the same and has been quietly keeping an eye on it.”

The cameraman and confidante has a good relationship with Katie’s sister Sophie, working with the sibling duo on podcast The Katie Price Show.

Just this week, Sophie and Ben playfully teased Katie over a former boyfriend.

“He works with Katie all the time so is aware of what is going on in her life, it means he can keep watch over her,” the source adds.

“Katie is a grafter so work, along with her kids, will always be a priority. It means she’s always in contact with Ben.

“Her family know he looks out for her and are grateful for his input.”

But now, a close friend has revealed to The Sun that Cat is living her new single life to the fullest.

She is not only open to dating again and looking more glamorous than ever, but is making a U-turn when it comes to her famously private home life.

They revealed: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen her like this before. There’s just a lightness to her now.

“She’s saying yes to things she might have dismissed  in the past, especially with work but also in her real life off screen.

“She’s been really open, she’s not afraid to be emotional or be herself on TV – she’s just enjoying her life much more.

“She’s even letting people see more of her home life inside her house – she’s filmed a few big brand projects at home, which is quite a big step for her as she and Patrick were extremely private but I guess she is just more relaxed with herself, she’s not overthinking anything and just saying yes to everything that fills her cup.”

Whilst it’s been a long time since Cat was on the dating scene, the pal revealed that the TV star isn’t against getting back out there.

And she might even be spotted on exclusive celeb dating app Raya one day, they confirmed.

“She is open to dating again, definitely, but it has to feel right. She wouldn’t go on apps because that’s just not her style, well maybe Raya one day, she’s not totally closed off.

“She likes the idea of what’s out there, a bit of flirting, a bit of fun, without any pressure.”

When not on TV, Cat has been enjoying nights out with pals and has been spending more time with the likes of best friend Charlie Brear and several of her male pals.

Describing the time with friends as “exactly what she needed”, our source says Cat’s nearest and dearest are helping her live to the fullest.

Whilst her close relationship with co-host Ben has also provided a helping hand, with the broadcaster’s ‘solid’ friendship providing laughs and a shoulder to cry on.

And from chic ensembles for This Morning’s early call times to glamorous Instagram posts, Cat appears to be glowing from the outside, too.

“You can see the difference in her too, she simply looks incredible. Not just glamorous, but genuinely happy,” said the insider.

They added: “It’s that kind of confidence you can’t fake, and people around her have really noticed it. She’s glowing, and I think a lot of that comes from feeling more in control of her own life again.

“It really does feel like a whole new chapter for Cat. She’s happier, more relaxed, and completely herself again and I think that’s why everything seems to be falling into place for her on and off screen.”

The islands are fairly quiet too as visitor numbers are limited because the islands form part of a national park.

There are no overnight stays allowed until the Easter period and dates between May 15 to September 14.

But for those who want to stay, you can do so on Faro Island at the campsite.

You can pitch your own tent at Camping Islas Cíes from €10.90 (£9.49) per adult.

If you want to book and have a tent provided, prices start from €69 (£60.07).

On site are plenty of facilities like a phone charging station, snack bar, supermarket, even a souvenir shop.

There’s also a restaurant that looks across Rodas Beach which specialises in seafood like scallops and razor clams.

The site offers activities too from kayak tours to snorkelling, star-gazing and children’s workshops from games to arts and crafts.

When it comes to getting to the islands, it is slightly complicated.

The first thing you have to do is request a free authorisation code up to 90 days in advance.

After that then use it to buy a boat ticket for one of the crossings from Vigo which takes around 45minutes.

These leave the Estación Marítima port and operate frequently during high season which is between May and September.

From the UK, visitors can head to Barcelona, then take a transfer to Vigo Airport.

Return flights in May start from £100, with camping costs, a five-night stay equates to around £150.

Meanwhile, trips to the Caribbean can start from £850pp.

Called Cotswold Country Park and Beach, here you can try out all sorts of watersport activities, have a sunbathe on the sand, and have a picnic.

On the water, visitors can go swimming, head out on pedalo swans, rent kayaks, mini-boats, rowing boats or stand-up paddleboards.

Aside from the beach, it has a mini golf course, children’s adventure playground and an off-lead dog walking area.

Rutland Water Beach itself is free to enter, but additional activities such as the Aqua Park inflatable course, mini-golf, and watersports requires paid-for tickets.

Sidmouth, Devon

Loch Morlich

In the heart of Glenmore Forest Park is Loch Morlich Beach.

The sandy spot is hidden amongst the Cairngorms National Park, so it has incredible views of the mountains and pine forests.

One visitor wrote on Tripadvisor that it’s a “stunning loch with beautiful views” and another added that it has “crystal clear waters”.

The beach is open to the public year-round and is popular for wild swimming and cold water dips.

Visitors can have a go at watersports too, like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing and katakanu (which consists of two canoes attached together).

Access to the beach is free.

Gaddings Dam

This pretty swim spot in West Yorkshire is “England’s highest beach” – it’s 1,150 feet above sea level on the moorlands above Todmorden.

Gaddings Dam is a remote, Victorian-era earth embankment reservoir located on the moors above Todmorden.

It wasn’t always so well-known and Master Manchester said it was “a well-kept secret for both locals and visitors alike for many years.”

They added: “The dam boasts breathtaking views, excellent hiking paths, a sandy beach perfect for lounging, and one of the top wild swimming areas in the county.”

It’s even been described by visitors as a “wild swimmer’s paradise”.

For those wanting to visit, be aware that it is an unstaffed spot and is accessible only via a steep 20–30 minute hike.

St Andrews Lakes, Kent

Just outside of Rochester, St Andrews Lakes has two beaches; ‘Carp’ and ‘Coots’.

Its beach has stunningly blue waters, sun loungers on the shore, free parking, and lifeguards are on duty too.

Aside from its pretty beaches, it has huge range of activities are on offer – from sailing, paddleboarding and an aqua park to zip wires, archery and climbing walls.

There’s even a Nordic-inspired wellness centre with a lakeside hot tub, detox in a wood-fired sauna, and refresh with a plunge in the natural lagoon.

Entry starts from £7.50 per person.

FOR the beauty of the Caribbean that’s much closer to home, the Greek island of Lefkada comes pretty close.

Often dubbed the ‘Caribbean of Greece‘, the island is the biggest in the Ionian Sea and has direct UK flights.

Some of the top sandy escapes include Porto Katsiki, Egremni, and Kathisma.

Porto Katsiki translates to ‘Goat Port’ and it was formerly home to just goats as it was largely inaccessible by people, because of its steep cliffs.

Now, the white-pebbled beach is accessible by a pathway down to the sand.

Egremni on the southwest coast of Lefkada is known for its ‘dramatic white cliffs’ and is hard to access unless by boat – if not, you have to take the steep staircase with over 400 steps.

Kathisma is easily accessible and much more family-friendly with a long stretch of golden sand dotted with sunloungers and beach bars.

Lefkada has a bustling town too; the capital is at the northern tip of the island and is easily accessed by the bridge from the mainland.

Here you’ll find colourful, traditional houses filled with shops, cafés, and churches.

The best part is that it’s all walkable in around 20 minutes.

For some culture, head to the Agia Mavra Fortress, a 14th-century Venetian castle at the entrance to the island.

If you want to find fresh food, head to Sikelianou Square near the seafront which is lined with Greek and Mediterranean restaurants.

Agios Nikitas is one of the most charming coastal resorts on the island.

It’s tucked around the bay of the same name and is built in amongst olive groves.

There are plenty of outdoor restaurants with sunny terraces like T’agnantio that overlooks the bay.

Here you can enjoy local specialities, salads, grilled meats, and fresh seafood.

One visitor even wrote on Tripadvisor that it has the “best food on the island”; another said it was the “best Greek food I’ve ever had”.

Across the island from Agios Nikitas is Geni Village.

It’s renowned for its waterfront dining, especially on Vlycho Bay where some restaurants actually feel like they’re floating.

It’s even easier to visit Lefkada now thanks to its new £3million marina which opened in April 2025.

If you’re not going to the island by boat, another way to get to Lefkada is by a 50-metre long car bridge that connects to the mainland.

In spring, you can fly to nearby Preveza from £29 with Ryanair which takes around 3hr20.

From there its just over an hour’s drive to the island.

When you’re at a loss with how to keep the kids entertained over the weekend, or the next warm day during the week – head to Hampton Court Palace in London.

Kids in particular will love its enormous playground called the Magic Garden.

It’s aimed at children under 12 and has so much to keep them entertained from climbing up the huge towers to even facing a ‘dragon’.

There’s a secret grotto with hidden pathways, plenty of slides and a sandpit, while a nearby cafe is the best spot to stop for hot drinks and snacks.

There will even be some historic residents like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I dressed in the classic Beano red and black stripes.

During May half-term kids can enjoy The Big Bahooey which has cabaret performances, world-class street theatre and circus workshops.

To step back in time, head back in July to watch knights take on a jousting tournament – families can pick a favourite and cheer them on until the winner is crowned.

The jousting is on during on the weekends of July 11-12 and July 18-19.

If you want to steer clear of chaotic cartoons, head to the Hampton Court Gardens for a more relaxing stroll.

The formal gardens are pruned to perfection with neat hedges, immaculate lawns, ponds and pretty flower beds – especially in the Rose Garden.

During particular days of the year, the gardens are open free of charge with no pre-booking required.

This year these are May 9-10, September 12-13, October 10-11, November 21-22, December 26 (Wilderness garden only).

Then of course there’s the palace itself, which was famously the home of Henry VIII and his six wives.
