Surgeon General nomineeCasey Means to undergo virtual confirmation

Oct. 23 (UPI) — The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions has scheduled a virtual confirmation hearing for surgeon general nominee Dr. Casey Means five months after she was nominated.

The hearing is scheduled on Oct. 30, and Means, 38, who is pregnant, will be in Kilauea, Hawaii, when she testifies remotely, ABC News reported.

If the committee votes in favor of her recommendation, she then would be subject to a confirmation vote before the full Senate.

President Donald Trump cited her “impeccable” credentials as an advocate for the Make America Healthy Again movement begun by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Means also is an advocate for wearable health devices and co-founded health tech firm Levels, which promotes the use of technology to track individuals’ health information, according to The Hill.

Kennedy, likewise, favors the use of wearable health-tracking devices and wants to make it possible for everyone in the United States to wear one within four years.

Means also is the sister of Kennedy adviser Calley Means.

Trump nominated Means in May after withdrawing his prior surgeon general nomination for Janette Nesheiwat when her qualifications were questioned.

Means obtained her medical training at Stanford University but exited her residency program when she was disillusioned by the financial incentives for and practice of surgical care.

She since has become known for her advocacy for wellness and the roles of diet and nutrition in people’s health.

Means says diet is the root cause of much of the chronic illnesses that people experience.

Her HELP committee confirmation hearing was delayed due to Means not submitting financial and ethics records until recently, according to The New York Times.

Her financial records show Means has turned her support for diet as a root cause of illnesses into a moneymaker by accepting payments from companies that sell dietary supplements, deliver home meals and other revenue sources.

She also receives sponsorship money for her newsletter, which generated about $116,000 in income over a recent 18-month period, according to The New York Times.

Her financial disclosures also show Swiss firm Amazentis contributed another $79,000 in newsletter sponsorship funding and paid $55,000 for Means’ book tour fees.

She also reported earning less than $1 million but more than $100,000 on the sales of her book, “Good Energy: The Surprising Connection Between Metabolism and Limitless Health.”

Some of Means’s critics say her health advocacy is not rooted in science and might cause harm.

Trump to undergo ‘semiannual physical’ at Walter Reed 6 months after annual exam

President Trump is undergoing what he has described as a “semiannual physical” at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday.

The visit, which the White House announced earlier this week, comes as Trump is preparing to travel to the Middle East on the heels of a ceasefire deal in the Israel-Hamas war. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described it as a “routine yearly checkup,” although Trump had his annual physical in April.

The White House declined to explain why Trump was getting a yearly checkup six months after his annual exam. But in an exchange with reporters Thursday, he said it was a “semiannual physical.”

“I’m meeting with the troops, and I’m also going to do a, sort of, semiannual physical, which I do,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I think I’m in great shape, but I’ll let you know.”

The president is scheduled to return to the White House after his visit to Walter Reed, which is located in Bethesda, Maryland.

Trump’s April physical found that he was “fully fit” to serve as commander in chief. The three-page summary of the exam done by his doctor, Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, said he had lost 20 pounds (9 kilograms) since a medical exam in June 2020 and said he has an “active lifestyle” that “continues to contribute significantly” to the well-being of the president, who’s 79.

In July, the White House announced that Trump recently had had a medical checkup after noticing “mild swelling” in his lower legs and was found to have a condition common in older adults that causes blood to pool in his veins. Tests by the White House medical unit showed that Trump has chronic venous insufficiency, which occurs when little valves inside the veins that normally help move blood against gravity gradually lose the ability to work properly.

At the April physical, Trump also passed a short screening test to assess different brain functions.

Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart to undergo season-ending surgery

p]:text-cms-story-body-color-text clearfix”>

When the Dodgers traded for Brock Stewart at the trade deadline, they knew he came with some risk.

But on Friday, their worst-case scenario was realized.

Stewart will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, manager Dave Roberts announced, leaving the Dodgers without the only significant deadline addition they made to bolster their struggling bullpen.

Although the Dodgers have been managing several injury concerns — from Will Smith’s fractured hand, to Tommy Edman’s sore ankle, to leg bruises that Max Muncy revealed on Friday he has been dealing with — Stewart’s status had become among the most alarming.

Even after completing a minor-league rehab stint for a shoulder problem that had kept him out since early August, he continued to feel residual soreness.

After meeting with head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache this week, Stewart and the team decided surgery would be best. According to general manager Brandon Gomes, the 33-year-old is having a debridement procedure that should allow him to pitch the “majority” of next season, when he will still be under Dodgers control.

But for this October, the club will have to proceed without him.

“We had a lot of conversations with Brock, and he was like, ‘Hey, I want to help this team in any way possible,’” Gomes said. “But watching him throw and just having the conversations with him, there was still something that was just bothering him. As much as we would love to have him right now, we don’t want to put his long-term health at risk.”

Shoulder problems are nothing new for Stewart. Last season, he made just 16 appearances with the Minnesota Twins before undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery in August.

While this latest injury is not believed to be directly related to last year’s issue, Gomes did acknowledge that “any time you’re taking on a pitcher, we understand that there are risks.”

It’s not that the Dodgers overpaid for Stewart, giving up only former prospect James Outman in their deadline deal with the Twins. But, by not adding a bigger name in a bullpen that had been slumping even before the deadline (and has further spiraled in the two months since), the Dodgers put a lot of eggs in the right-hander’s basket. He was supposed to give the unit some experienced stability. Now, he leaves yet another hole to fill.

Without Stewart, the Dodgers’ right-handed relief hierarchy is somewhat unclear. They still have longtime stalwart Blake Treinen, but he has posted a career-worst 5.47 ERA and dealt with first-half arm troubles. Hard-throwing rookie Edgardo Henriquez has a 2.50 ERA in 21 appearances, but still has just 21⅓ career innings in the big leagues. And then there’s Roki Sasaki, the rookie Japanese phenom who returned from a nearly five-month shoulder injury with an auspicious inning out of the bullpen this week.

Another name that could enter the mix: Starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan, who was scheduled to pitch Friday’s series-opener against the Seattle Mariners but will likely be shifted to a multi-inning relief role out of the bullpen come the postseason.

In any event, however, Stewart’s absence will still hurt. What the Dodgers hoped would be a high-upside play, given his 2.38 ERA with the Twins this season, has instead become yet another bullpen letdown.

Transfer news LIVE: Wirtz to undergo Liverpool medical, Chelsea ‘in talks’ with 6ft6 striker, Duran’s Prem return

Bryan Mbeumo alternatives

Manchester United have identified two alternatives in case they miss out on Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

According to ESPN, Man Utd are considering Bournemouth ace Antoine Semenyo and Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze as plan Bs.

Eze has also attracted interest from Aston Villa after leading Palace to their first ever FA Cup.

However, SunSport understand the Eagles have slapped a whopping £65m release clause on their star player.

The playmaker has a complicated valuation based on several factors at Selhurst Park.

The Red Devils are also understood to be leading the race to sign Semenyo.

Jorrel Hato interest

Arsenal have been linked with Ajax ace Jorrel Hato ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to TEAMtalk, the Gunners are reportedly taking advantage of Chelsea’s participation in the Club World Cup to try and overtake them in the race for Hato.

The same report claims the Blues remain interested in the left-back despite the recent pause.

Arsenal are said to have held positive talks with the Netherlands international’s representatives with discussions over a six-year contract.

Barcelona star targets

Barcelona are targeting four top wingers ahead of the summer transfer window.

Barca saw their attack explode last season with Ballon d’Or candidates Lamine Yamal and Raphinha contributing 102 goals.

However, manager Hansi Flick wants to add even more firepower to his ranks in a bid to retain the Spanish league title and better last season’s semi-final appearance in the Champions League.

And Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford is among the Blaugrana’s top targets… As are the below:

  • Luis Diaz (Liverpool)
  • Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)
  • Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao)
  • Ivan Perisic

Inside Gyokeres saga

Viktor Gyokeres has been embroiled in a heated fall-out with Sporting Lisbon amid a turbulent transfer saga.

And Gyokeres’ agent has come in claiming he has proof of an alleged agreement that can allow the Manchester United and Arsenal target to leave for less than his astronomical release clause.

The 27-year-old has come to blows with club bosses after trying to force through a dream move to the Premier League.

The striker is furious with Sporting for going back on their word over a promise to lower his £84million asking price and reportedly plans not to play for the club again.

The Sweden international believes he had a gentleman’s agreement to leave the Portuguese champions for £50m with a further £8m in add-ons.

But that claim has been denied by club president Frederico Varandas, who insisted he will not be bullied into letting Gyokeres move to the Premier League on the cheap this summer.

‘Back for Watkins’

Arsenal have put their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres on hold and reignited their interest in Aston Villa ace Ollie Watkins.

The Gunners held talks with Gyokeres’ agent over a summer move to the Emirates earlier this week.

But according to reports, the North Londoners have temporarily shelved their interest in the striker to re-examine a move for Watkins.

According to Record, Arsenal have put a move for the Sweden international on ice because Sporting won’t reduce their asking price.

That’s despite Gyokeres reportedly snubbing a move to Manchester United.

Zirkzee stays, Hojlund leaves

Manchester United have made a major decision regarding the future of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee at Old Trafford.

According to Corriere dello Sport, United have decided to hold on to Zirkzee.

This comes amid intense interest from Inter Milan for Hojlund, whom Man Utd are open to selling this summer.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter are so keen on the striker they are set to go “full speed ahead” for his signature.

The two Italian sources claim the Red Devils are much more interested in a permanent deal.

And Amorim’s side value the striker at around £34-38million this summer.

Inter prefer a loan deal with a purchase clause which is almost an obligation to buy in 2026.

The Nerazzurri’s offer would also include a hefty loan fee for the initial year.
