Visit the gorgeous locations where BBC’s ‘masterpiece’ series Poldark was filmed

Explore amazing Cornish landscapes where you can walk in the footsteps of Poldark’s Ross and Demelza this autumn — and stay at a huge historic country house where the drama was filmed

The period drama Poldark, which aired on the BBC from 2015 to 2019, captivated us with its stunning locations and compelling storyline, and the series, which starred Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark, was watched by eight million viewers per episode.

One of the highlights of the show was the breath-taking filming locations, and now, the National Trust is inviting fans to explore these sites this autumn and winter, as Cornwall celebrates a special Poldark anniversary.

Next year (2026) will mark 80 years since the publication of the first original Poldark novel, Demelza, which continues to enchant readers to this day.

The first TV adaptation of Winston Graham’s novels aired 50 years ago, running from 1975 until 1977, and it’s been 10 years since the acclaimed remake graced our screens in 2015, reports Cornwall Live.

One review of the 2015 series sums up the enthusiasm people had for Poldark: “This is the most artistic, photogenic, captivating series ever made. Besides an outstanding, lovely cast, the excellent performance by the lighting men, cameramen, director, scenery experts, colour specialists, costume creators, music score, and quality scriptwriters is beyond all expectations.

“Their outstanding teamwork often makes me freeze the image in order to better appreciate the beauty and magic of the shots: outside and inside. Breathtaking scenery and, extremely cosy, authentic cottages, and overwhelming, rich mansions—even the flower bouquets—are mind-blowing.

“So grateful to the whole crew, they made a genuine masterpiece. A treasure to cherish forever!”

The show’s spectacular filming locations span from the wild Tin Coast and vast sandy shores to the “ancient and atmospheric” Godolphin estate, which served as Trenwith in the 1975 Poldark series.

These breathtaking spots have attracted devoted fans from across the globe. The medieval gardens and historic house at Godolphin represent just one of the numerous National Trust sites that played a crucial role in bringing the Poldark tale to life.

The enduring phenomenon of “Poldark tourism” continues to fund essential conservation efforts throughout Cornwall, and visitor numbers have played a vital role in safeguarding threatened wildlife and habitats across the county.

Autumn presents an ideal opportunity to explore the striking landscapes that sparked the beloved saga. The cooler months offer a wonderful opportunity to explore Poldark country, as visitor numbers remain lower than during the summer peak, allowing you to truly savour the tranquillity that Cornwall provides.

Since its first appearance in 1946, Winston Graham’s “love letter to Cornwall”, the Poldark saga, has won hearts across the globe, whisking readers and viewers away to 18th-century Cornwall.

The dramatic vistas of mining heritage locations and rugged coastal cliffs took centre stage in the narrative when the original television adaptation was broadcast in 1975, and once more in 2015 when the reimagined series introduced an entirely new generation to Ross and Demelza’s Cornwall.

Poldark transformed into a worldwide phenomenon, motivating thousands to journey to Cornwall and discover the scenery they had witnessed on their screens.

By 2019, approximately 14% of Cornwall’s visitors were believed to have made the trip in some capacity due to Poldark, and this enthusiasm delivered a tourism windfall to the county whilst raising crucial funds for the conservation and maintenance of Cornwall’s natural and historic locations.

A significant portion of this support has been reinvested into preserving these remarkable landscapes for generations to come, with efforts along the Tin Coast concentrating on protecting natural areas and wildlife habitats. At West Wheal Owles, better known to Poldark fans as Wheal Leisure, conservation efforts have been put in place to protect the endangered Cornish choughs.

This area is now off-limits to the public, creating a safe haven for this iconic bird species.

For those who are fans of the 1975 TV series of Poldark, Godolphin will be familiar as it was the home of Francis Poldark and the fictional grand house, Trenwith.

Back when Godolphin was still a private residence, it served as a filming location. The National Trust bought the estate in 2007 and began extensive and careful conservation work to preserve the house for future generations.

In 2006, Godolphin was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Since then, the estate has become renowned for its historic gardens and 500 acres of protected parkland — and the house is available as a holiday let for most of the year.

Autumn is the ideal time to explore Poldark country with its quieter paths, sweeping sea views, and a feeling of stepping back into history.

From rugged clifftop walks and mining heritage trails to exploring historic houses and gardens, Cornwall’s National Trust sites offer visitors a chance to experience the landscape that inspired a legend.

‘£20 a night for one of the most peaceful locations in the world’: readers’ favourite remote stays | Europe holidays

Winning tip: an away day in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides

I’d recommend visiting the Outer Hebrides island of Berneray for an experience of true remoteness. Here you can walk across the rare grassland called the machair to the white, three-mile long West Beach, which looks out into the North Atlantic, and marvel at the immense space and colour of the sea. We stayed at a Gatliff Hebridean hostel, which consists of two converted crofts where for about £20 a night for a bunk you will be staying in probably one of the most peaceful locations in the world. Berneray is between North Uist and Harris.

Ancient and modern digs in the Highlands

Perched above the sea in remote Achiltibuie, the Brochs of Coigach are two stunning stone dwellings that blend ancient design with modern luxury. With panoramic views of the Summer Isles, red deer grazing nearby and sea eagles overhead, it’s a true escape into the wild. Visit in autumn for fiery sunsets, crisp air and a chance to see the northern lights. The midges are gone, the beach below is perfect for evening walks and the silence is unforgettable.

Greek island without the crowds

Astypalaia is one of the more remote Greek islands. Photograph: Hemis/Alamy

Astypalaia has the same pretty, white-washed houses you see on famous Greek islands, but it’s far less busy. The main town, Chora, is beautiful, with buildings leading up a hill to an old castle. We rented a small apartment and spent our days on quiet pebble beaches that we had almost to ourselves. It’s a genuinely peaceful place where you can properly switch off from the noise of modern life. This Dodecanese island is the focus of a scheme for emission-free transport, with generous grants to replace petrol and diesel vehicles with electric ones.

Under the stars of Carmarthenshire

Y Caban was crafted from the local forests of Carmarthenshire

We woke to birdsong and the sounds of a rushing brook and ate breakfast while the morning light streamed through the windows of Y Caban, near the village of Login in Carmarthenshire. Hearing its story of being created from local forests was as fascinating as the walk through the tall woods that surround it. We watched red kites soar over the valley before stargazing under a sky free from light pollution. Such tranquility and connection with nature is hard to find in the UK these days, but the benefits are palpable – we left rested and refreshed, more so than any recent holiday.

Magical Irish castle

Annes Grove Miniature Castle

We stayed at the Annes Grove Miniature Castle in Castletownroche, County Cork, near to the ruined Augustinian Bridgetown Priory and Blackwater Castle, in what felt like the middle of nowhere. It was magical. The Irish Landmark Trust has renovated it for people to stay in, complete with a wood-burning stove and comfy gothic bed. I found there to be nothing like having a whiskey by the fire surrounded by beautiful nature – and being able to say you spent a weekend in a castle, how cool is that!

Delta ‘on the edge of the world’, Romania

The Danube Delta in Romania feels like the edge of the world at the eastern frontier of the EU. Accessible by boat from the port of Tulcea, it is one of Europe’s largest and most vital wetland ecosystems and is full of wildlife. We stayed at the Delta Boutique & Carmen Silva Resort in Crișan, an old working fishing village where tranquil evenings are broken only by the lively chorus of frogs. Guided boat safaris, including to see pelicans, can be arranged through the hotel.

‘Shrouded in fog and empty space’ in the Faroe Islands

Gjógv is a village of turf-roofed cottages. Photograph: Caroline Brundle Bugge/Getty Images

Some years ago, having read Girl, Interrupted author Susanna Kaysen’s bleakly beautiful account of an anthropologist’s stay in the Faroe Islands (Far Afield), I took myself to what is now the Hotel Djurhuus on the edge of the capital, Tórshavn, to experience the archipelago for myself. Expertly guided by Tora tours, I endured a dreadful but thankfully short sea crossing to Mykines to see puffins, visited the beautiful villages of Saksun (population: eight) and Gjógv (a metropolis of 31 inhabitants) and explored Tinganes, location of the islands’ parliament. It was the most wonderful, wild and remote August week, shrouded in fog and empty space.

Off-grid in Northumberland

The River Coquet in Northumberland national park. Photograph: David Taylor Photography/Alamy

Last October we had a wonderful week in the most remote part of Northumberland – the Upper Coquet valley. Our stay was an off-grid, simple bunk barn called Nightfold at the top of the valley. We spent a week living like woodland creatures in autumn – eating heartily, keeping ourselves warm (thanks to the wood-burning stove) and sleeping. In the daytime, we did long walks where we didn’t see a single other person – only sheep, deer, birds and squirrels. At night there were endless stars, the Milky Way and reading by candlelight. Bliss.

Free camping in Portugal’s mountains

The Serra da Estrela mountains. Photograph: ARoxo/Getty Images

The sleepy villages of continental Portugal’s highest mountain range, the Serra da Estrela, are a world away from the coastal honeypots of Lisbon and Porto. In Vila Cova à Coelheira there is a free campsite on the banks of the Alva river, reached via an old Roman bridge that you can swim under (or jump in from if you’re feeling brave). Even better, there is a bar at the river beach that serves excellent pica-pau – pork braised in wine, with onions and pickles. During my stay there I never encountered more than one or two others camping.

Croatia’s Mljet island is not for the jet set

A monastery on a lake on the island of Mljet in Croatia. Photograph: Vedrana2701/Alamy

Away from Dubrovnik’s cruise-ship crowds, Mljet island feels like another world: pine forests dipping into turquoise bays, an ancient monastery on a tiny islet in the middle of a saltwater lake, and hardly a sound beyond cicadas and the wind. I stayed in a simple family-run cottage just outside the national park gates, where evenings meant grilled fish on the terrace and nights under skies thick with stars. Days were spent kayaking across mirror-still water and walking through pine-scented trails where I rarely met another soul. It felt like stepping into a slower rhythm of life, a corner of Europe the 21st century has politely passed by.

Where was Frauds filmed? ITV drama’s ‘stunning’ Spanish locations revealed

Frauds stars Jodie Whittaker and Suranne Jones as two confidence tricksters

A fresh ITV drama is scheduled to debut tonight (Sunday 5th October), which is certain to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Six-episode series Frauds focuses on two expert con artists named Sam and Bert, portrayed by Jodie Whittaker and Suranne Jones. Suranne also co-created the programme and worked as an executive producer.

The duo are brought back together following their separation during a gruelling ten-year prison term. Bert secures release on compassionate grounds due to a cancer diagnosis, yet she has no intention of taking it easy during her remaining weeks. Rather, she’s determined to execute one last job that will demonstrate her capabilities.

Bert and Sam quickly set out on the most daring of art robberies, assembling a crew of exceptionally talented misfits to assist them in plotting the crime.

“Whilst the team must overcome numerous challenges before they can pull off the heist, it’s the power struggle between Bert and Sam that threatens to derail their plans and destroy them both,” the synopsis concludes, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Alongside Suranne and Jodie, the programme also stars Talisa Garcia as Miss Take, Elizabeth Berrington as Jackie Diamond, and Karan Gill as Bilal Anwar.

The ensemble is rounded out by Thais Martin as Caitlin, Javier Taboada as Blas, Christian Cooke as Deegs, Lee Boardman as Craig, Kate Fleetwood as Celine, Nansi Nsue as Amaya, and Abdul Salis as Mateo.

Where was Frauds filmed?

Frauds was shot in Tenerife earlier this year, highlighting the island’s breathtaking remote terrain and glistening coastline.

Speaking at a recent press event, the show’s co-creator Anne-Marie O’Connor revealed: “The setting of Spain [felt] like a character. How arid it is, how unforgiving it is once you’re outside of the city. And as Brits, we all know Spain, we all know a version of Spain… Once you get outside of that world, you’re back in a very sort of arid landscape.”

Executive producer Katie Kelly chimed in: “We always knew that’s where it would be set, but shooting in Tenerife offered us everything we needed and more. In a small area you can have a sort of Costa del Sol beachside strip full of clubs (with everything from drag clubs to a magician’s show), and then suddenly you can find yourself in what looks like an old Spanish town or up in lush, verdant mountains.

“In developing the show we were also quite influenced by Westerns and in that part of the world you’ve also got these desert landscapes which are vast and feel epic and dry and bring a really interesting flavour and tone to the show.”

Sam’s secluded cottage was located in a quaint northern town named La Laguna.

“It was amazing, but it rained a lot. Didn’t matter – it was stunning. It is literally gonna be in my top five places in life, I loved it so much,” Jodie Whittaker shared.

“I’ve been to the south like as a kid on family holidays and never really realised how much we’re missing out by not heading up north. You know Santa Cruz is a brilliant little city too. That’s a great thing about this job – you get to live in these incredible places for a little window in your life.”

In the series, Bert decides that she wants to steal a famous painting from the Reina Sofía museum in Madrid, where filming actually took place.

“I remember Anne-Marie and I were just walking around the Reina Sofía in the middle of the night, and it was just closed for us,” lead director Giulia Gandini recalled.

She then joked: “And we were just wandering around thinking, ‘Yeah, we could really steal something right now. We could pull this off.'”

Anne-Marie added: “Also, as well, it’s that thing of like, you know, sometimes if you just ask you get. I mean, I wasn’t responsible for asking, but it was like, ‘They said yeah’. And I was like, ‘Alright then. You know we’re nicking a painting out of here, don’t you?'”

As well as making good use of Spain’s stunning landscapes, the team also cast several Spanish actors that “understood the acting and directing style” of the UK-created series.

Frauds will premiere on Sunday 5th October at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX

Striking UK castle loved by Hollywood is one of the country’s top film locations

It has been used as a location for a number of blockbuster movies and TV shows known for the stunning views and ‘timeless architecture’ with lots to do for everyone to enjoy

A Northumberland castle, known for its appearances in blockbuster films and hit TV shows, has been named one of the top film locations to visit in the UK.

The castle has been praised for its ‘timeless architecture’ and ‘stunning’ surroundings. For years, the cast and crew of the popular drama Vera have descended upon the North East each summer to film new series of the beloved show.

While Gateshead, Newcastle and South Shields have all featured, it’s Northumberland that has been the primary filming location, with numerous spots in the area taking centre stage as Brenda Blethyn retired from her iconic role earlier this year.

Northumberland also made waves on the big screen in 2025, following the release of Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel 28 Years Later. The film shot straight to the top of the UK film charts after its summer release.

The Oscar-winning director utilised various locations in the region for his story, including Rothbury, Kielder and Holy Island, reports Chronicle Live.

While it didn’t make an appearance in 28 Years Later, Alnwick Castle is no stranger to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, having now been named one of the top film locations in the UK by travel gurus at Holiday Cottages.

The castle, which served as the backdrop for key scenes in the first two films, including the iconic flying lesson in The Philosopher’s Stone, has also played host to the cast and crew of big-budget blockbuster Dungeons and Dragons, as well as the acclaimed period drama Downton Abbey and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

In their glowing review of the famous landmark, Holiday Cottages wrote: “Northumberland has long been a favourite location for filmmakers because of its captivating history and landscapes that seem almost otherworldly, and one of its most famous landmarks is Alnwick Castle, which will be instantly recognisable to fans of a certain wizarding franchise as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two films.

“Visitors can wander through the Outer Bailey, where Harry first learned to fly on a broomstick with Madame Hooch, and children and adults alike can experience the magic themselves by taking part in the castle’s Broomstick Training Lessons, while the courtyards recall the memorable scenes when the flying car came crashing down in the early films.”

The travel site heaps praise on Alnwick, describing it as a ‘joy to explore’ with its enchanting cobbled streets, unique shops and stunning coastline, all contributing to its ‘magical’ staycation appeal.

As well as a beautiful old town dotted with cute and cheap cafes and shops, Sozopol has one of the most beautiful beaches in Bulgaria

Our Bulgaria expert, Pavlena Todorova, recommends Central Beach in Sozopol over the more famous Sunny Beach in Bulgaria.

This sweeping bay is rich in golden sand and has beautiful, calm blue water that is perfect for swimming.

Central Beach, as well as Sozopol itself, is also less busy than the capital Sofia and its popular beaches.

Plus, the beach bars and cafes along the sand are slightly cheaper and you’ll find it easier to get a table overlooking the sea.

Beach Bar, Sparrow, has a shady terrace on the sand and you can get a beer for £2.50 and chicken and chips for £6.

Book with: travelsupermarket.com for seven nights bed and breakfast, staying at the 3-star Flagman Hotel, with flights on Jet2 from Birmingham, £399 per person.

You are spoiled for choice here with brilliant blue waters, sandy beaches and quiet coves, where if you go at the right time of day, you could be the only person on the beach.

Rent a small speedboat for £50 a day and explore the harder to reach beaches, or just take it a mile off the shore and spend the day sunbathing or and jumping off the boat into the crystal clear sea to get cool.

For dinner, one of the many local restaurants in Kos Town will have you filling your boots with gyros wraps, hummus and chips for only £5.

A cold glass of wine to wash it all down is around £4 at most places.

Sunsets are free and stunning, especially when viewed from a table on the beach.

Book with: jet2holidays.com for seven nights at Anastasia Apartments self catering, with return flights from East Midlands Airport, including 22kg checked luggage per passenger, for £438pp.

This includes the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kato Paphos Archaeological Park, which has some of the Mediterranean’s best-preserved mosaics and Paphos Old Town, which mixes ancient buildings and streets with modern additions better than most classic cities.

You have to go to Pinguino on the harbour for breakfast. A full English or a huge pile of pancakes is only £5 and we guarantee you won’t need lunch that day.

Heraklion is the largest city in Crete and has an interesting history, including the 16th century Koules fortress on the old Venetian port and the striking fortification walls.

The best deals for beach holidays in this area are just outside the city on the north coast.

There are a lot of resorts along the coastline, most look out onto the brilliant blue Aegean Sea.

Tips for booking bargain breaks in summer 2025

Budget-conscious ways to save money booking a holiday this summer

Go somewhere different.

You may have set your sights on the Costa del Sol but you may find much better deals for lesser-known beach places like Bulgaria and Poland. These destinations have beautiful beaches and low lifestyle costs, with beer as low as £2 a pint.

Money talks.

To be really clever, choose destinations where the value of the pound is strong. This means more bang for your buck whether you are buying a beer and a sandwich or indulging in a serious shopping spree. This year, the weakest currencies against the GBP include Turkey, Bulgaria and Portugal.

Staycation in the UK

Staying on British soil means you don’t have to navigate the airport or pay extra for baggage, transfers or currency exchange. There are still some excellent deals going on UK holiday parks that have water slides, kids clubs and beaches on the doorstep. These can often work out less than overseas flights alone. See our round up of what holiday parks to book this summer here.

Is all-inclusive always best?

If you are not a big drinker or eater or have fussy kids in the family, booking an all-inclusive might not be the best option for your group. So many resorts have self-catering packages too. You will get all the perks of the resort facilities, like kids clubs, evening entertainment and pools, but with a small kitchenette to make your own lunch and dinner and save big.

Book very early…

Some packages, such as with Jet2hoidays and TUI can be booked a year in advance and those willing to commit early can sometimes get some unbelievable discounts.

If you know when you want to travel, keep an eye out for prices on the destinations and resorts you want to book. They may go up and down in price throughout the year, depending on whether airlines and companies have a sale on.

…or, last minute.

Alternatively, booking last minute can mean some fantastic final dash prices. See our list below for the cheapest places to holiday in Europe this summer.

Unification Church scandal expands with raids at more than 10 locations

July 18 (UPI) — South Korean prosecutors on Thursday executed coordinated raids on more than 10 locations connected to the Unification Church, including its Seoul headquarters in Cheongpa-dong, the Cheonjeonggung Palace in Cheongpyeong, a foundation office in Mapo, and the private residence of former church executive Yoon Young-ho.

The large-scale operation marks a significant escalation in a widening political influence scandal involving the church and top government figures.

During the raid at Cheonjeonggung, Lee Cheong-woo — the church’s director of central administration and its third-ranking official — allegedly mobilized approximately 600 young members to physically obstruct investigators. According to JTBC, Lee issued verbal threats and threatened to ram his vehicle into media reporters in an attempt to intimidate and disrupt coverage of the raid.

JTBC also reported that investigators discovered large bundles of cash and high-end luxury items inside a hidden safe, possibly intended for use in lobbying operations.

Prosecutors allege that the Unification Church sought to secure political favors in exchange for luxury goods and financial support, including lobbying for public development assistance (ODA) projects along Cambodia’s Mekong River and South Korea’s bid to host the United Nations’ Fifth Secretariat Office.

The church has denied all allegations, characterizing the investigation as a case of “individual misconduct” by Young-ho Yoon. However, the hierarchical nature of the Unification Church makes it unlikely that Yoon acted alone. Many observers expect the seized materials to provide more definitive evidence implicating higher-ranking officials.

At the center of growing scrutiny is Jung Wonju, Executive Secretary to Chairwoman Hak-ja Han and Vice President of Cheon Mu Won, the Unification Church’s highest administrative body. Though Han remains the official spiritual leader, Jung is widely regarded as the church’s de facto second-in-command and is believed to have overseen high-level political outreach and internal consolidation of power.

Jung began her rise within the organization as Han’s personal hairdresser but gradually leveraged her close relationship with the chairwoman to sideline rival figures and accumulate influence behind the scenes. In recent years, she is believed to have effectively replaced senior leadership, quietly assuming control over key decision-making processes.

She left South Korea for the United States in early June — more than a month before the July 18 raids — reportedly citing her husband’s illness. Despite being subject to a de facto travel restriction, she has not returned since. Her prolonged absence is widely viewed as compelling circumstantial evidence of her central role in the alleged scheme.

Further intensifying public scrutiny, Jung’s family ties have raised concerns over media influence and nepotism. Her husband’s younger brother, Tom McDevitt, currently serves as chairman of The Washington Times, a U.S.-based newspaper with long-standing ties to the Unification Church. Additionally, Jung’s younger brother, Hee-taek Jung, is CEO of Segye Ilbo, a major South Korean daily also affiliated with the church.

Critics argue that these familial connections have enabled Jung to exert behind-the-scenes influence over both domestic and international media. Just a day before the raids, The Washington Times published a glowing profile of Chairwoman Hak-ja Han, prompting allegations that the outlet — though publicly operating as an independent journalistic institution — was being privately leveraged to defend and legitimize church leadership amid mounting legal pressure.

As the investigation widens, calls are mounting for Jung Wonju to return to South Korea and face legal proceedings. Many within the broader religious community argue that assuming responsibility is not only a legal duty but a spiritual obligation.

The special prosecutor’s office has indicated that additional indictments and arrests are likely as evidence is reviewed. International cooperation may also be sought if Jung continues to remain overseas.

China’s Luckin Coffee opens first U.S. locations in New York City

Chinese coffee chain retailer Luckin Coffee entered the U.S. market Monday with two locations in New York City. The coffee chain, which is cashless and uses a mobile app, charges an average of 30% less than Starbucks for its coffee. File Photo by Wu Hong/EPA-EFE

July 1 (UPI) — Starbucks got some heated competition Monday as China’s largest coffee chain Luckin Coffee opened its first two locations in the United States.

Luckin Coffee, which has more than 22,000 locations in China and Singapore, opened both U.S. stores in New York City, with one in Greenwich Village and the other in NoMad. No word on whether the Xiamen, China-based chain, plans to expand to more U.S. locations.

Luckin, which was founded in 2017, features cashless payments and takeout booths for its coffee and other beverages that average about 30% cheaper than its competitor Starbucks. Within two years of serving up brew, Luckins overtook Starbucks in China.

In New York City, Luckin may have to make some changes to comply with the city’s cashless business ban, as well as U.S. coffee tastes. According to its website, it serves up single-origin espresso, signature lattes, matcha and fruity Americanos.

The Chinese chain also touts its affordability and efficiency with a mobile app that is “completely changing the traditional coffee business mode.”

Luckin celebrated its venture into the United States on Monday with a $1.99 first drink for New Yorkers, who used the app, and a social media post with animated Luckin coffee cups as they take over dozens of New York yellow cabs.

“NYC, you’re luckin now,” the company wrote.

The trend for ‘coolcations’ has seen holidaymakers shun beach resorts in favour of destinations with less tourists this time of year

As the summer holidays approach, folks are gearing up to flock to sunny coastal resorts or enjoy a UK seaside staycation. But, some are bucking the trend and opting for chillier locales as soon as the British heat kicks in.

The travel scene’s seen a real shake-up recently with ‘coolcation’ destinations gaining steam among Europeans looking to dodge the scorching sun. Google’s been ablaze with a whopping 624% surge in searches for these cooler getaways this year.

Inghams Walking has delved deep, scrutinising almost 100 spots across Europe to reveal where the cool crowd will head come 2025.

Inghams Walking’s Head of rambling, Laura Mason, chimed in: “While countries like Greece and Spain have offered holidaymakers a chance to soak up the sun and get some much-needed Vitamin D, the heatwaves rippling across Europe in the past couple of years have undoubtedly shifted travellers to alternative travel for their summer breaks.

Iceland’s Akureyri, fondly referred to as the ‘Capital of the North’, tops the chart as the most popular ‘coolcation’ hotspot. Inghams experts have revealed a staggering 264.13% surge in interest for Akureyri as travellers seek cooler climes for their summer holidays.

This idyllic city, with its mild summer temperatures of 10-12°C, boasts the northernmost botanical garden in the world, an eye-catching church by the architect of Reykjavik’s famed Hallgrímskirkja, and some of Iceland’s finest whale-watching excursions,” reports the Express.

Tisvilde, known as the ‘Danish Riviera’, is next on the list, offering tourists the perfect mix of urban exploration and relaxed coastal vibes.

Experts at Inghams extol Tisvilde’s virtues: “Tisvilde is rich in culture and has several palaces and castles, charming colourful beach houses, miles of sandy beaches, and restaurants serving fresh catches from the surrounding waters.”

With average summer temperatures ranging from 19 to 21°C, Tisvilde provides a warm yet comfortable beach experience, avoiding the intense heat found in more traditional European destinations.

Sneak peek inside the Netflix House retail locations

Netflix on Tuesday spilled more details about its retail stores coming to the Philadelphia and Dallas areas later this year and unveiled plans to open a third location in Las Vegas in 2027.

The more than 100,000-square-foot locations, called Netflix House, will sell merchandise and food based on popular Netflix programs and will have immersive activities pulled from series including “Wednesday” and “Squid Game.”

At Netflix House Philadelphia, located inside the King of Prussia Mall, visitors explore the Eve of Outcasts Festival that falls under Wednesday’s spell where they will discover “games, mis-fortunes and horrifying surprises,” Netflix said.

The location will also have virtual reality games where fans can play the main character inside the worlds of Netflix programs, watch fan events on a big screen inside a theater and play mini golf inspired by programming.

There will also be an interactive experience based on pirate series “One Piece,” where visitors can dodge villains to reach the Devil Fruit.

Netflix House at Galleria Dallas will have a game room and immersive experiences based on “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game,” where players will engage in “diabolical games.”

The Netflix House location opening in Las Vegas will be at BLVD on the strip.

Netflix House is part of a larger effort by the streamer to keep its fans engaged with in-person retail and events. The company has launched more than 40 experiences, reaching 10 million fans in 300 cities, , such as candlelight concerts and balls inspired by “Bridgerton.”

The company has partnered with brands and retailers on clothing, toys, lotions and snacks based on their shows.

Earlier this year, Netflix opened a restaurant inside MGM Grand in Las Vegas called Netflix Bites that features Netflix-themed foods like “WWE Smashburger” or a three-tiered tea service inspired by “Bridgerton,” according to the restaurant’s website.

Netflix Bites, which serves food and cocktails, will also be located in each of the upcoming Netflix House locations too.

The Original Factory Shop is closing down another branch

The Merseyside branch has launched closing down sale to help shift stock before it shutters for good.

Shoppers have a chance to grab up to 70% off selected lines, and 50% off electrical products.

The Henswell store opened two years ago in June 2023.

The exact date the store is closing has not yet been confirmed but The Sun will update this piece when we hear more.

Up to 11 TOFS stores are already to set to close this month, including sites across Worcestershire, Durham and Cumbria .

Meanwhile, another five stores across Nairn, Market Drayton, Troon, Blairgowrie and Castle Douglas have been placed up for sale.

The Original Factory Shop has told The Sun that negotiations are ongoing with landlords – making it unclear whether these shops will remain open.

It comes as part of a major restructuring carried out by new owner Modella Capital with a number of loss making stores having to close as result.

Over June nine of these stores will close, including sites in Dorest and Durham.

Another site in Middlewich is also set to close however a date is yet to be confirmed.

What’s been happening with The Original Factory Shop?

Private equity firm Modella bought The Original Factory Shop back in February and has since launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 TOFS stores.

Modella is known for picking up struggling retailers, having also recently acquired Hobbycraft and WHSmith‘s high street shops.

It is set to rebrand all WHSmith high street stores to TGJones, and has brought in advisers to look at potential options for Hobbycraft.

At the end of April, Modella drew up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for TOFS.

Companies often use CVAs to prevent insolvency, which could otherwise result in store closures or the collapse of the entire business.

They allow firms to explore different strategies such as negotiating reduced rent rates with landlords.

TOFS previously told The Press and Journal that a “number of loss-making stores will have to close” as part of the restructuring.

It said at the time: “Closing stores is always a tough decision and we are committed to keeping as many stores open as possible.

And it is not only TOFS that is facing hard times. Hobbycraft is set to close nine stores come June 21.

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025

The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury’s hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April.

A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024.

Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.”

Wetherspoons brings back ‘legendary’ item at all 809 locations next month – but you will have to be quick

WETHERSPOONS is bringing back a legendary item at all 809 locations next month – but you will have to be quick.

The bargain boozer has revealed that The Brunch Burger is going to be back on menus.

Burger with fried egg, bacon, cheese, and hash brown on top.

1

Wetherspoons is bringing back its Brunch Burger for Father’s Day weekend

The American-style burger is making a return on Father’s Day weekend, which takes place from Friday June 13 to Sunday June 15.

The burger returned two years ago after a ten-year hiatus and it was a fan favourite at the time with punters calling it “legendary”.

This is the third year in a row that Spoons is bringing the much loved meal back.

It’s made up of a three ounce beef patty, American-style cheese, maple-cured bacon,  free-range fried egg and is topped with a hash brown.

The meal is £9.99, including a soft drink and chips or £11.52 if you want to add an alcoholic beverage.

Last year, the meal cost £7.73 with a soft drink and £9.26, if you added booze.

It is likely that prices will vary from pub to pub, so check in with your local to see how much you will be charged.

It is also worth noting that airport, train station, service station and NEC Birmingham pubs are excluded from the Father’s Day offer.

To find your nearest Wetherspoons head over to the website and use its handy locator tool.

It comes as the chain has shaken up its menu in recent weeks, with a number of popular menu items axed.

The Sun tries Wetherspoons’ new menu

Two weeks ago, the budget pub chain stopped serving steaks, mixed grills and gammon.

The dishes have long been Wetherspoon staples, but have reportedly become too expensive to keep serving.

In an email sent to staff, Wetherspoons chief John Huston confirmed that the meats were being ditched “after much debate”, as part of a planned menu change.

But it’s not all bad news as the chain has welcomed a number of new menu items including three new beef burgers.

You can check out the new menu change here.

What else is happening at Wetherspoons?

Late last week, Spoons closed a beloved pub in Coventry.

The Spon Gate in Coventry was a favourite among locals and closed for good on May 25.

Two other Spoons still serve the city with The Flying Standard and The Early of Mercia remaining in operation.

The Spon Gate was a favourite among locals though and was called the “best” city centre pub.

Elsehwere, Spoons also launched a £2.99 breakfast deal in February, with customers able to get a breakfast muffin or small breakfast with soft or hot drink.

There are also veggie options available, which is served between 8am and midday.

How can I save money at Wetherspoons?

PUB-GOERS love Wetherspoons for its competitive pricing and low-cost meals – but did you know there are more ways to save money?

Senior consumer reporter Olivia Marshall explains how.

Free refills – Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.

Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.

So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.

Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.

For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.

Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in

their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.

Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.

Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.

Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.

It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.

As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.

Saudi Arabia to lift booze ban at 600 tourist locations by 2026 in bid to lure in holidaymakers ahead of World Cup

SAUDI Arabia will lift its long-standing booze ban at 600 tourist sites by 2026 — in a boozy bid to attract visitors ahead of the 2034 FIFA World Cup and 2030 Expo.

In a shock U-turn, the ultra-conservative Kingdom will allow the sale of wine, beer, and cider at licensed locations including five-star hotels, luxury resorts, and expat-friendly compounds.

Booze will still be banned in public, homes, shops, and fan zones — with spirits off the menu altogether under strict new rules.

The dramatic policy shift is part of Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman’s Vision 2030 drive to boost international tourism, lure foreign cash and shake off its teetotal image.

Officials hope controlled alcohol sales in glitzy areas like Neom, Sindalah Island and the Red Sea Project will help the country compete with Gulf rivals like the UAE and Bahrain — where boozing is already legal in tourist zones.

Licensed venues will operate under a tightly regulated system, with trained staff and strict rules to prevent abuse and uphold the Kingdom’s Islamic values.

The goal, authorities said, “is to welcome the world without losing cultural identity — positioning Saudi Arabia as a progressive, yet respectful player on the global tourism map.”

The plan is set to roll out in 2026 — eight years before the World Cup kicks off — and comes amid growing pressure to modernise the Kingdom’s image.

Several global hotel chains are already rejigging their blueprints to accommodate booze zones, with tourism bosses eyeing a flood of new jobs and international investment.

It follows a dry storm earlier this year when Saudi’s ambassador to the UK announced alcohol will be banned entirely at the 2034 World Cup, sparking fury among England fans.

Prince Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud told LBC radio in February: “There is no alcohol at all, rather like our weather, it’s a dry country.

Saudi’s plan for $5b world’s tallest skyscraper twice the height of Burj Khalifa

“Everyone has their own culture. We’re happy to accommodate people within the boundaries of our culture but we don’t want to change our culture for someone else.

“It is not a Saudi event, it is a world event and, to a large extent, we will welcome everyone who wants to come.”

Fan Tim Bailey fumed on X: “Their country, their rules. But why the f*** would anyone want to go there anyway?”

One supporter added: “Weird . . . they always want everyone else to change their culture for them.”

But now, Saudi insiders hope the new booze policy will silence critics and show the country is ready to party — with limits.

Sources say the model is inspired by successful alcohol rollouts in Dubai and Manama, where tight control has boosted tourism and business without trashing tradition.

The Kingdom insists this will not be a free-for-all — and anyone caught misusing the system will face swift consequences.

“Sales will only happen under controlled environments, with licensed service staff and clear operational rules in place to make sure alcohol is handled responsibly and respectfully,” a government statement read.

Spirits and hard liquor above 20% ABV will remain banned, with no sign of shops, takeaways or home brewing being permitted.

Why is alcohol banned in Saudi Arabia?

ALCOHOL is banned in Saudi Arabia because the country’s legal system is based on Islamic law, or Sharia, which strictly prohibits the consumption, sale, and possession of alcohol.

This ban stems from Islam’s teachings, particularly the Qur’an, which considers intoxicants to be haram, or forbidden.

Verses in the Qur’an warn against the use of alcohol, culminating in a clear directive for believers to avoid it altogether.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Sunni Islam known as Wahhabism, which enforces these religious prohibitions through law.

As a result, producing, importing, or drinking alcohol is illegal and punishable by harsh penalties, including fines, imprisonment, deportation for foreigners, and formerly, public flogging.

The ban is also deeply rooted in the country’s conservative social norms, where alcohol is associated with immoral behavior and societal disruption.

The ruling Saudi royal family also relies on support from the religious establishment, and maintaining the alcohol ban reinforces their political legitimacy and alignment with Islamic values.

While recent reforms under the Vision 2030 initiative are pushing for modernization, including a controlled rollout of alcohol sales in tourist areas from 2026, the core prohibition remains firmly in place to preserve cultural and religious identity.

McDonald’s to shut all 5 test locations for CosMc beverage concept

May 24 (UPI) — McDonald’s will close all five of its CosMc’s test locations this summer, 18 months after introducing the beverage-focused concept at four restaurants in Texas and one in a Chicago suburb.

The Chicago-based company plans to add the specialty beverages to its 13,637 regular restaurants this summer.

Starting in late June, McDonald’s will close all stand-alone pilot CosMc’s locations on a rolling basis and discontinue the CosMc’s app, the company said in a news release Friday. The program was launched on Dec. 7, 2023, with the first restaurant in Bolingbrook, near Chicago.

The test stores also included food but not McDonald’s signature Quarter Pounder and Big Mac.

The fast-food company said the plan was to test the new drink options.

“The main goal of the CosMc’s test was to create a launchpad for learning for the McDonald’s System — and the insights we’ve gathered have given us a whole new way to get closer to our fans,” the company said.

“Building on the insights gained from the pilot standalone locations, CosMc’s-inspired flavors will be landing at McDonald’s as part of the upcoming U.S. beverage test, seamlessly blending out-of-this-world tastes into the McDonald’s experience.”

The company added “we know we can bring more delicious and innovative drinks to more fans. “

The concept was designed to compete with the drive-thru beverage category dominated by Dutch Bros, Scooters and Swig, as well as Starbucks. Taco Bell is accelerating its in-restaurant drink initiative, Live Mas Caf3.

CosMc’s drinks included shaken expressos, Frappes, cold brew, slushies and lattes, as well as more traditional options like lemonade and blackberry mint green tea.

Soft-serve ice cream also was available.

Food choices at the test market included hash brown and pretzel bites, McPops of apple cinnamon and cookie butter, as well as an egg on brioche sandwich, spicy queso sandwich and creamy avocado tomatillo sandwich.

The smaller stores were designed to “test new, bold flavors and different technologies and processes — without impacting the existing McDonald’s experience for customers and crew.”

“We’ve learned so much, so quickly from the CosMc’s test,” the company said about its Learning Lab.

The name CosMc originated as a McDonaldland character, appearing in McDonald’s advertisements from 1986 to 1992. CosMc is an extraterrestrial who “craves McDonald’s food.”

In another move to drive business, McDonald’s is extending its operating hours at of most of its restaurants until midnight or later. Some restaurants already are open 24 hours a day. Exact hours and menu options are determined by franchises.

“Our fans know there’s no better way to end an unforgettable night than by feasting on your favorite McDonald’s order,” the company wrote in a statement shared with USA Today on Wednesday. “That’s why, as the summer season kicks off, we’re excited to offer up more ways for customers to satisfy their late-night cravings with more choices and expanded hours at more restaurants.”

The company plans to hire 375,000 new employees this summer.

McDonald’s, which has been in business for 70 years, reported first-quarter 2025 U.S. sales decreased 3.6% but included a leap-year day last year. Consolidated operating income dropped 3%.

The company said the decrease was “primarily driven by negative comparable guest counts” in a filing on May 1.

Overall, its first-quarter revenue globally was $5.956 billion with net income $1.868 billion.

A JOE Goldberg lookalike says he’s inundated by fans of Netflix’s You who ask him to “kidnap them and lock them in cages”.

Nikita Darwin, 22, says he is regularly compared to Joe Goldberg – the lead character in the hit series – played by Penn Badgley.

He said it is “kind of crazy” to be told that he looks like the infamous stalker and serial killer and the amount of messages he gets about it is “insane”.

Nikita even claims women on dating apps ask him to kidnap them and lock them in a cage – like Joe does in the show.

Some women will even send him their address for him to go over – but insists he’s never taken anyone up on the offer.

Nikita, a content creator, from Dover, Kent, said: “I have a lot of family and friends say that I look like Joe from You.

“A lot of people tell me that I have a serial killer vibe, which is kind of scary as I am not trying to be a serial killer.

“People really love the idea of being stalked by Joe.

“I will be sent locations, people will ask me to stalk them and lock them in a glass cage.”

Nikita started posting videos on TikTok three weeks ago, and his messages were soon flooded by strangers who said he bears striking resemblance to Joe Goldberg.

He said he found it “crazy” to be likened to a serial killer but has leaned into the stereotype.

Nikita said: “I have had a lot of people in my life who tell me I look like Joe.

“So I thought I would start posting online, it has been kind of crazy.

“I get thousands upon thousands of messages every day of people telling me that I look like Joe and asking me to stalk them.”

Nikita – who is single – says women on dating apps will often message him with their location.

He says he will often jokingly tell them that he is Joe’s brother.

“People will send me their live location and ask me to stalk them.

“They don’t think I am a catfish, they just think I am a really good lookalike.

“I just respond to them saying I’m his brother and their reaction is always a surprise.”

Nikita said he is a huge fan of You, but doesn’t understand why women are fascinated by Joe as a character.

He said every day he leaves the house, someone will come up to him – mistaking him for the actor.

Nikita said: “My initial response is always ‘I get that a lot’.

“I will leave the house and people come up to me asking me to stalk them.

“In all honesty, I don’t think people would enjoy it as much as they think they would.

“I think he is really bad, but all the girls seem to be fascinated by this serial killer, which is really messed up.”

The final season of You

IN the fifth and final series, which is now streaming, viewers see Joe embarking on an affair with a young woman named Bronte, played by Madeline Brewer.

They meet after she gains employment at his bookstore but it soon becomes clear that she has an ulterior motive after she developed suspicions that Joe was responsible for the death of her close friend.

Penn Badgley reprises his role of Joe Goldberg, the serial killer who has gotten away with numerous murders.

The show is based on the book series by Caroline Kepnes.

You started out on Lifetime, after Netflix originally passed on it.

But, with low ratings on the cable channel, the streaming network picked it up and saw massive success.

‘Fairytale’ city is also one of the ‘cheapest’ holiday locations in the UK

Experts from Holiday Extras named a ‘fairytale’ UK city as one of the most affordable destinations for a staycation in 2024 – and Brits can even bag bargain hotel stays

Nestled within ancient city walls, historic York is renowned for its Roman heritage, eerie encounters, and charming uneven Shambles. According to experts from Holiday Extras, it’s a city that seems like it could be plucked straight from the “pages of a dark fairytale”, yet it’s also a place where Brits can enjoy a budget-friendly city break this year.

York offers a wide range of options, including high-end hotels and upscale restaurants. However, there are opportunities to cut back on expenses. The city is easily accessible by train, thanks to the bustling York station. Booking in advance or using a railcard can reduce costs, with train fares available for as little as £30.

In terms of budget accommodations, booking in advance and choosing off-peak times can result in significant savings. Most hotels operate on a supply-and-demand basis, which means they increase prices during peak times.

Budget-friendly hotels such as Premier Inn offer affordable options in the city. Premier Inn has six locations that range from the city centre to the outskirts of York, reports the Express.

Based on a quick search, Premier Inn’s York City (Blossom St North) hotel has availability in September, with approximately £67 per night. If two people share a room the cost would be £33.5 per person per night.

York boasts a treasure trove of B&Bs, ranging from chic boutique stays to wallet-friendly accommodations. Kayak’s latest figures reveal that some of the most affordable B&Bs can be found from just £52 per night.

Recently voted as the most picturesque street in Britain, 'The Shambles' is a centre piece of historic York.

The city is steeped in history, offering a plethora of ancient sites and museums at no cost. The National Railway Museum, delving into York’s railway heritage, welcomes visitors free of charge – an ideal outing for families.

Art enthusiasts will be thrilled to discover that York Art Gallery’s permanent collections are accessible without an entry fee, including two galleries dedicated to the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA).

Behind the gallery, guests can meander through the Artists Garden and Edible Wood, then venture out to the stunning York Museum Gardens.

York is dotted with numerous medieval churches throughout its centre, many open for daytime exploration. Visit York recommends St Michael le Belfrey in the heart of the city and Holy Trinity, nestled behind Goodramgate’s shops in a verdant retreat.

For those keen on discovering York’s narrative on foot, Visit York’s Visitor Information Centre provides a variety of self-guided walking tours.

“Many cover hidden histories and niche interests in the city and are perfect for experiencing the city in a different light at your own pace,” says Visit York.
