Vermont state senator who took part in ‘deeply disturbing’ Young Republicans group chat resigns

A Vermont state senator who took part in a Young Republicans group chat on Telegram in which members made racist comments and joked about rape and gas chambers has resigned.

State Sen. Sam Douglass was revealed last week to have participated in the chat, which was first reported on by Politico. The exchanges on the messaging app spanned more than seven months and involved leaders and lower ranking members of the Young Republican National Federation and some of its affiliates in New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont. Douglass was the only elected official involved.

Vermont’s top Republican leaders, including Gov. Phil Scott, quickly called for Douglass to resign. A joint statement from the GOP lawmakers described the comments “unacceptable and deeply disturbing.”

Douglass, who was in his first year of representing a conservative district near the Canadian border, said in a statement Friday that he and his wife had received multiple hateful messages and “nasty items” in the mail since news of the group chat broke.

“I know that this decision will upset many, and delight others, but in this political climate I must keep my family safe,” Douglass said in explaining his decision to resign. “And if my Governor asks me to do something, I will act, because I believe in what he’s trying to do for the state of Vermont.”

Douglass also said he had served in a “moderate fashion,” and touted his efforts to improve Vermont’s welfare system,

“Since the story broke, I have reached out to the majority of my Jewish and BIPOC friends and colleagues to ensure that they can be honest and upfront with me, and I know that as a young person I have a duty to set a good example for others,” Douglas wrote, referencing the acronym Black, Indigenous and people of color.

Other participants in the group chat have faced repercussions, including a New York Young Republicans organization that was suspended Friday.

Kruesi writes for the Associated Press.

N.Y. Young Republicans disbanded after offensive group chat

Oct. 17 (UPI) — New York Republican Party leaders on Friday voted unanimously to disband the state’s Young Republicans chapter after a group chat involving some of their members included racist and antisemitic comments.

The 2,900 pages of messages posted on Telegram also involved Republicans in Arizona, Kansas and Vermont, according to a Politico report. The messages from January to August included calling for gas chambers, expressing love for Adolf Hitler and endorsing rape.

On Tuesday, the chairman of the Kansas Republican Party deactivated the Kansas organization.

New York’s executive committee suspended the authorization of men and women 18 to 40 to operate in the state, Politico website and The Hill reported.

“The Young Republicans was already grossly mismanaged, and vile language of the sort made in the group chat has no place in our party or its subsidiary organizations,” New York GOP chair Ed Cox said in a statement.

Cox sent a formal notice to the National Federation of Young Republicans.

“Unlike the Democrat Party that embraces anti-Semitic rhetoric and refuses to condemn leaders who call for political violence, Republicans deliver accountability by immediately removing those who use this sort of rhetoric from the positions they hold,” he said. “This incident was immediately condemned by our most senior New York Republican elected leaders.”

The New York group’s Facebook page is not longer available.

Five people linked to New York participated in the chat, including Peter Giunta, a former leader of the state group and Bobby Walker, the vice chair.

Giunta is no longer chief of staff to state Assemblymember Mike Reilly and Walker’s offer to manage state Sen. Peter Oberacker’s congressional bid was pulled. They both apologized for their remarks but questioned whether the chat was altered.

“I love Hitler” is one of the messages associated with Giunta.

“I’m ready to watch people burn now,” Annie Kaykaty, a member of the Young Republicans’ national committee, who is also from New York, wrote.

A photo obtained by HuffPost shows Giunta and Kaykaty posing with President Donald Trump at a campaign event in 2024.

Vermont state Sen. Samuel Douglass was revealed as a chat participant.

Elise Stefanik and Mike Lawler, who are House members serving New York districts, condemned the chat.

Democrats denounced their association with the Young Republicans.

“Disgraceful New York Republicans Mike Lawler and Elise Stefanik have been palling around with these racist, antisemitic and bigoted ‘Young Republicans’ for years,” Jeffries wrote Tuesday on X. “Their silence exposes what’s always been true – the phony outrage was nothing more than performance.” Alex Degrasse, a senior adviser to Stefanik, said she “calls for any New York Young Republicans responsible for these horrific comments in this chat to step down immediately,” in a statement to ABC News.

Stefanik fired back at violent rhetoric from Democrats, calling Zohran Mmadani, the party’s New York City candidate a “raging antisemite” on X.

Vice President JD Vance said those messages should not face career-ending punishments.

“The reality is that kids do stupid things,” Vance said in an interview on The Charlie Kirk Show on Wednesday. “Especially young boys, they tell edgy, offensive jokes. Like, that’s what kids do. And I really don’t want us to grow up in a country where a kid telling a stupid joke — telling a very offensive, stupid joke — is cause to ruin their lives.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday called for a congressional investigation of antisemitic and racist comments.

In 1935, the Young Republican division officially became the Young Republican National Federation.

This Morning’s Alison Hammond slammed over number of errors during Priscilla Presley chat

This Morning fans rushed to social media to complain about Alison Hammond’s constant mispronunciation of rock and roll legend Elvis during her chat with Priscilla Presley

Of late Alison Hammond has had nothing but praise heaped on her as she became the nation’s sweetheart. But it looks as though her run of good luck may be coming to an end as she has found herself on the receiving end of harsh criticism by viewers of This Morning.

The 50 year old TV presenter, who had her first taste of fame back in 2002 while appearing on Big Brother, was introducing her next guest when viewers noticed that she was constantly mis-pronouncing the name of Priscilla Presley’s legendary ex husband – Elvis. Instead she kept referring to him as Alvis.

Priscilla attended the popular daytime TV show and sat on the infamous sofa with Dermot O’Leary and Alison to promote her latest memoir, Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis.

But before Priscilla started talking about her life with the rock and roll legend before and after their split, fans felt the need to air their feelings on X. One person said: “Who is Alvis, Alison?”

Another added: “Just waiting for Priscilla to ask who the hell is this person Alvis you keep mentioning.” A third person joked: “She fell in love with Alvis. Good job Elvis didn’t find out about that!”

Meanwhile a fourth added: “I’d love to see Priscilla correct Alison on name pronunciation.” “Just waiting for Priscilla to ask who the hell is this person Alvis you keep mentioning,” said a fifth.

And sharing the same sentiment, a sixth chimed in saying: “Wasn’t Alvis one of those Chipmunks?” During her interview on This Morning, Priscilla opened up on the moment she first met the iconic star, who sadly passed away in 1977 at the age of 42 from a cardiac arrest.

The star, 80, was only 14 at the time she met Elvis in 1959, who was 10 years her senior at the time. By 1968, the pair welcomed their only daughter into the world, Lisa Marie Presley.

But due to his demanding career as a rock and roll icon, hectic travelling schedule and a string of infidelities, Priscilla finally had enough of the marriage.

And it was at this point she embarked on an affair in 1972 and finalised their divorce the following year. After her divorce, Priscilla met Brazilian screenwriter Marco Garibaldi and they welcomed a son named Navarone, in 1987.

In her latest memoir, the businesswoman and author recalls the moment Elvis was considering hiring a hitman to murder her boyfriend, Mike Stone who worked as a karate Instructor.

Elvis struggled with the idea of Priscilla being with another man she entered into a relationship with Mike while legally married.

But this came after she found out a host of women had been sending the singer letters to their home address, and this apparently, was enough proof she needed that their marriage had come to an end.

In the book, according to Fox News, she wrote: “When I turned the key in the mailbox, however, what poured out wasn’t bills or junk mail. The mailbox was stuffed full of letters from girls. I finally held written proof of what I’d always feared. I was deeply hurt, but I was also furious. I called Elvis and demanded an explanation.”

She continued: “When that tactic failed, he resorted to saying the girls were all lying. This time, though, turning the tables didn’t work. If Elvis was having affairs that were none of my business, then it was none of his business what I was doing. The close friendship that Mike and I had developed turned into an affair.”

But on learning about her affair, she revealed: “Elvis found the thought of me with another man unbearable. In the weeks after my departure, he told the guys that Mike had to die. He even asked Joe [Esposito] to find a hit man. Eventually, Elvis was talked out of eliminating Mike. Joe warned me to be careful. When I offered to bring Lisa [Marie Presley] to Vegas for one of Elvis’s shows, Joe advised against it.

Priscilla added: “Seeing me might set Elvis off. Over time, and with a lot of persuasion from his father and the guys, Elvis gradually calmed down and gave up the idea of killing Mike, thank God.”

I was the last person to interview Ricky Hatton – I was gutted when our chat ended

DARREN BARKER is gutted his heartbreaking interview with Ricky Hatton was the British boxing legend’s last.

The 43-year-old former middleweight champion of the world sat down with the 46-year-old at his Manchester gym on Tuesday September 9 for a wonderful 90 minute podcast.

The boxing legend was found dead at his home last monthCredit: PA

The two-weight world champ Hitman had to wrap-up the interview to collect his daughters from school.

And, tragically, on the morning of Sunday 14 the national treasure was found dead at his home, leaving Barker and the rest of British sport sobbing.

The hour-and-half chat is available online and lets Hatton brilliantly reflect on his small-hall rise, legendary Kostya Tszyu world title win, iconic Las Vegas takeovers and his post-boxing demons.

It is a travesty it will be his final media appearance but a perfect reminder of the honest, open, funny and brilliant boy-next-door Hatton was and will be remembered as.

Barker told us: “I remember leaving him after that interview and I was gutted because I enjoyed his company that much.

”I said this at the top of the pod, he was perfectly Ricky Hatton.

“He was so funny, so warm towards me and the crew that were there, he was just bang on, he was perfect.

“And it was so nice to hear all of those stories directly from him.

Ricky Hatton’s biggest boxing wins

Ricky Hatton tasted defeat just three times in an illustrious 46 fight career that saw him earn an estimated £37million in prize money. Here are some of his most memorable victories:

Tommy Peacock by TKO – In his 11th fight as a professional Ricky won his first title – the vacant Central Area light-welterweight belt – at Oldham Sports Centre

Jon Thaxton on points – Ricky picked up national honours when he defeated Thaxton for the vacant British light-welterweight strap at Wembley Conference Centre in 2000

Kostya Tsyzu retired – In front of a rapturous home crowd inside Manchester’s MEN Arena, Ricky became a world champion for the first time. He won the IBF and The Ring light-welterweight titles against the former undisputed champ Tsyzu

Luis Collazo unanimous decision – Just three fights later Ricky added to his title collection, claiming the WBA light-welterweight title stateside by beating tough Collazo over 12 rounds

Paulie Malignaggi TKO – Ricky’s final boxing victory came against loud-mouthed American-Italian fighter Malignaggi in Las Vegas. The Hitman let his fists do the talking and stopped his foe in the 11th round. He earned a cool $2.5million for his night’s work.

Six months later Ricky would taste defeat for a second time, the first being against Floyd Mayweather in 2007, against Phillippino superstar Manny Pacquiao. He suffered a brutal second round knockout and was taken to hospital for a precautionary brain scan

“He was just a person that everyone wanted to be around; a great man, a boxing man, a family man, the people’s man and I was gutted that the interview was over.

“I was just gutted. I really am gutted.”

Barker – without any hint or suggestion of the tragedy that was around the corner – asked Hatton outright how he wanted to be remembered.

And his answer was a magnificent reminder of how the Manchester City and Oasis lover cherished his working-class reputation over every belt and pound he ever earned.

Last Ricky Hatton interview filmed just four days before death is released as boxing icon ‘tells story for final time’

He said: “He was just that man-next-door, that relationship that he had with his fans.

“When I asked him how he wanted to be remembered, he mentioned the likes of Frank Bruno and Nigel Benn.

“And his name is in that mix and he was so proud to be alongside those great names.”

Darren Barker hosts Pro Project Promotions’ charity boxing event on October 18, that offers ten retired footballers another night in the limelight .

AI-powered ‘Stan Lee’ is keen to chat up late legend’s fans

Artificial intelligence and its invasiveness in our everyday lives might be endlessly discussed among academics, government officials and social media provocateurs, but Los Angeles Comic Con has injected a dose of gamma radiation and showmanship into that debate.

Stan Lee has entered the chat.

L.A. Comic Con is introducing its Stan Lee Experience, a 1,500-square-foot booth in Aisle 200 that features an AI-powered holographic image of the late comic book legend that interacts with attendees. Curious fans can ask questions of “Stan Lee” and probe dozens of years’ worth of comic book and comic book-related data that’s been fed into the AI, which has been drawn from footage, conversations and even Stan Lee’s Soapbox — where Lee would expand on happenings of the day or riff on comic book goings-on in the back pages of Marvel comics from 1967 through 1980.

Chris DeMoulin, chief executive and general manager of L.A. Comic Con parent Comikaze Entertainment Inc., says the Stan Lee AI project took months of planning and years of being connected to the parties involved.

“For me, personally, one of the most thrilling things of my entire life was getting to work with Stan Lee when this was Stan Lee’s Comic Con and Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo before that. What was such a joy was watching him interact with fans. Old fans and then people that were bringing their 8-year-old kid who had just read their first Spider-Man comic book,” said DeMoulin, who has collected comics from an early age.

“This avatar, to us, is an entry point into the world of storytelling that he created. We wanted to create something which can be part of maintaining and expanding on that legacy so that Stan’s role in creating a lot of this is acknowledged.”

The hologram, at least the one on the show floor, is not really a hologram. With a box built by Proto Inc., the company that also launched an interactive mirror from “The Conjuring,” and Hyperreal, a company whose chief executive Remington Scott helped bring Gollum and Smeagol to life for Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” movies and creates realistic avatars, it is an interactive Stan Lee image that processes questions and formulates responses.

“Hologram is a technology that’s different than this. This is more of an avatar presence, or a telepresence, if you will. Unlike ChatGPT, this is not a web crawler. This is a large language model which has got guardrails on it,” says George Johnson, a member of the Hyperreal technical team.

“It’s specifically Stan’s words. Red carpet interviews, everything he wrote, like Stan’s Soapbox, but with guardrails. Meaning, if you ask him sports questions or politics questions, he’s not going to answer those. But the Stan Lee Universe is feeding us more and more stuff that we can add to the model.”

David Nussbaum, Proto Inc. founder and chairman, knows that Stan Lee is only the first step for this technology.

“Any Proto device can have any piece of content in it, and we also beam people in live. So if you’re interviewing someone in Japan, you could beam there and appear like you are physically among them,” Nussbaum said. “These are great for classrooms, museums, labs, retail.”

Proto technology is also HIPAA-compliant, he said, meaning doctors and patients can use it to have “in-person” consultations without being in a room together.

As it learns, it can — as AI does — go a bit off script. While folks behind the scenes said they didn’t want Stan Lee to be used as an advertising gimmick, its makers had asked it so many questions about Coca-Cola, it had changed its answer from a generic “I don’t deal with that kind of thing” to a thoughtful answer where, at the end, Lee says, “Who wouldn’t want to be in business with the company that been quenching thirsts for a hundred years?”

That was Stan — ever the showman.

The Stan Lee Experience costs $15 plus service fees with tickets available for purchase via the L.A. Comic Con website. The pop culture gathering runs through Sunday at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Italian champs Napoli were interested but the Red Devils were unwilling to sanction a loan exit for the England star.

Amorim ignored Mainoo while the window was still open but had a heart-to-heart during the international break — telling him he is not the finished product and could do more.

The Portuguese coach, whose side face Manchester City in today’s Manchester derby at the Etihad, said: “Like a lot of guys, he wants to play more.

“I didn’t have a conversation with him before the window closed but I did this week.

“I didn’t want him thinking I was having the conversation just to hold on to him. Some people think he is there but I think he can do so much better.

“For some guys it’s enough, for him it’s not enough. Maybe it’s not fair but I think I’m helping Kobbie Mainoo.

“I have the same feeling that you have. That he’s a top, top player. But he can be so much better. So I’m focused on that.

“He’s not used to fighting for his place, maybe. He is uncomfortable but he is a very good kid — and he is fighting.”

Mainoo looked set for superstardom when he scored for his boyhood club in their FA Cup final win over City and then started for England in  the Euro 2024 final, despite defeat to Spain.

Amorim added: “I know he started the final of the European Championship in a team that has a lot of talented players.

Bruno Fernandes matches Cristiano Ronaldo record as he wins Man Utd award – but admits he DOESN’T want it

“Phil Foden played that game. Cole Palmer was on the bench. He was playing. But sometimes I have  a different way of seeing the game.”

The ex-Sporting Lisbon boss explained where he thinks Mainoo can improve.

The United boss added: “He needs to have the technical ability that he has but he  needs more pace.

“He needs to play at different speeds. Sometimes he’s slower and sometimes he’s faster. He can improve on that.

“And then he has to beat Bruno Fernandes. He has to beat Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte. They are good players also. I need to choose.”

Amorim pointed to fellow Portuguese Vitinha, Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield general, as a player who once struggled but is now thriving.

He said: “Sometimes it’s about the opinion of a coach. I remember Vitinha was not playing for Wolves. Nowadays, Vitinha is maybe the best midfielder in the world.”

How a ‘chat’ turned St Helens from Super League also-rans into contenders

MARK Percival believes St Helens are proving talk is not always cheap, especially when it comes from within.

For a frank discussion is proving the moment their season turned a corner.

Mark Percival of St Helens rugby team during a match.

Mark Percival has reveled how a ‘chat’ helped spark St Helens’ season as they aim for the Super League titleCredit: SWPIX.COM

Just over three months ago, boss Paul Wellens was getting all kinds of stick as the former four-time Super League and World Club champions floundered.

Now after nine wins in 11 matches, Saints are firmly in the race for a top three finish and defeating rivals Wigan tonight would put them in contention for second.

And centre Percival can pinpoint the moment the tide started to turn – and the real St Helens started showing up.

He said: “About 12 weeks ago, we all had a good sit down – I think it was after the Warrington game – and a chat.

“I’ve been part of this club for 12 years and I’d not had a chat like that for a long time. It wasn’t nice at the time, a lot of honest things were said.

“But I think it really did turn the corner for us. Since then, everyone’s bought into what we want to do.

“Everyone knows St Helens as a club – we play tough but also play smart. We lost that a bit. We were trying to beat teams by going out there and expecting it to happen.

“We wanted it easy at the time but over the last 12 weeks, we’ve relearned how hard it is.

“We beat Wakefield by a few points but everyone said it was harder than it seems. That’s because we were putting in the effort we were supposed to.

“And you feel for the coach sometimes when they’re copping the stick. It was to do with us on the field if I’m honest. We had a good enough team out there, but we weren’t performing.”

St Helens and Wigan would be a fierce derby if they were playing tiddlywinks, never mind rugby league.

Throw in competition for England places against Australia and you have even more reason to perform, especially at centre.

As well as Percival, you have Saints’ Harry Robertson and Wigan’s Jake Warde battling it out as the 31-year-old admits one of those roles is taken if Herbie Farnworth is fit.

He added: “There are a lot of good players in my position. Harry, myself and Jake out there tonight.

“I know what I can do but I see the likes of Herbie and Jake as absolutely brilliant players. No-one’s getting in over Herbie, he’s probably the best centre in the world.

“And I hope he’s fit for England’s sake.

“Harry’s superb and it’s kept me on my toes as we’ve players coming up who are athletic, strong, brilliant.

“Every club has a transition period. A few years ago, we had all that success but you lose players who won all that.

“Now we’re trying to build that team again and over the next few years, with the young lads we’ve got, it can get back to that as they’ve the ability to do it.”

Anthropic to start training AI models from users’ chat conversations

Aug. 29 (UPI) — Anthropic plans to start training its artificial intelligence models with user data, one day after announcing a hacker used Claude to identify 17 companies vulnerable to attack and obtained sensitive information.

The company is asking all users of Claude to decide by Sept. 28 whether they want their conversations used for the process. Anthropic will retain data for up to five years, according to a blog post by the company on Thursday.

Anthropic, a public AI research and development company headquartered in San Francisco, was founded in 2021 by seven OpenAI leaders and researchers who left because of disagreements over safety policies. OpenAI is a rival company.

In 2023, Amazon invested $4 billion and Google $2 billion in the company.

Claude debuted in March 2023 with the latest version, Claude 4, introduced in May. Claude has approximately 18.9 million monthly users active users worldwide. There are free and direct use plans that cost as much as $30 per month per user.

Users of the affected consumer products include Claude Free, Pro and Max plans. Not applicable are Claude for Work, Claude Gov, Claude for Education, or application programming interface use, including third parties that include Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI.

Previously, users were told their prompts and conversations would be deleted automatically from the company’s back end within 30 days “unless legally or policy‑required to keep them longer” or their input was flagged as violating its policies. In the latter case, a user’s inputs and outputs might be retained for up to two years.

“By participating, you’ll help us improve model safety, making our systems for detecting harmful content more accurate and less likely to flag harmless conversations,” the company said. “You’ll also help future Claude models improve at skills like coding, analysis and reasoning, ultimately leading to better models for all users.

The company noted users are “always in control of this setting and whether we use your data in this way.”

New users can select a preference in the sign-up process. Existing ones will see the choice in a pop-up window. To avoid accidentally clicking “accept,” the following message is in larger letters: “Updates to Consumer Terms and Policies.”

Changes will go into effect immediately.

After Sept. 28, users will need to make their selection on the model training setting to continue using Claude.

The five years of data retention will only apply to new or resumed chats and coding sessions, “and will allow us to better support model development and safety improvements,” the company said.

Also, their privacy will be guaranteed.

“To protect users’ privacy, we use a combination of tools and automated processes to filter or obfuscate sensitive data,” the company said. “We do not sell users’ data to third parties.

Connie Loizos, a writer for TechCrunch, explained why the policy changed.

“Like every other large language model company, Anthropic needs data more than it needs people to have fuzzy feelings about its brand,” Loizos said. “Training AI models requires vast amounts of high-quality conversational data, and accessing millions of Claude interactions should provide exactly the kind of real-world content that can improve Anthropic’s competitive positioning against rivals like OpenAI and Google.”

The Federal Trade Commission, when Joe Biden was president, warned on Jan. 9, 2024, that AI companies risk enforcement action if they engage in “surreptitiously changing its terms of service or privacy policy, or burying a disclosure behind hyperlinks, in legalese, or in fine print — they risk running afoul of the law.

The current FTC has only three members.

On Wednesday, Anthropic said an unnamed hacker “used AI to what we believe is an unprecedented degree. Claude Code was used to automate reconnaissance, harvesting victims’ credentials and penetrating networks.” In cyber extortion, hackers steal sensitive user information or trade secrets.

A hacker convinced Claude Code, which is Anthropic’s chatbot that specializes in “vibe coding,” or creating computer programming based on simple requests, to identify companies vulnerable to attack. Claude created malicious software to actually steal sensitive information from the companies. It organized the hacked files and analyzed them to help determine what was sensitive and could be used to extort the victim companies.

Targeted were healthcare, emergency services, and governmental and religious institutions. The person threatened to publicly expose the data unless a ransom of up to $500,000 was paid, the company said.

The company also said it discovered that North Korean operatives had been using Claude to fraudulently secure and maintain remote employment positions at U.S. Fortune 500 technology companies to generate profit for the North Korean regime.

“Operators who cannot otherwise write basic code or communicate professionally in English are now able to pass technical interviews at reputable technology companies and then maintain their positions,” the company said.

The company said it updated preventive safety measures.

She was thrown straight in at the deep end when she was blindfolded and sent on a date with Damian.

After he asked if she had pets, Donna replied: “I’ve got a cat.”

She then told Damian her pet is called Mr Big, to which he replied: “Mr Big? A nice, big pussy.”

But, rather than being turned off by his obvious innuendo, Donna quizzed Damian on his sex drive.

After claiming it’s “through the roof”, Damian admitted to having had “threesomes and a fivesome”.

Donna said: “A fivesome? Isn’t that a g*** b***? How was that?”

Damian replied: “It was good, I enjoyed it.”

But some viewers at home didn’t enjoy the exchange, with one writing on social media: “omg at Donna’s blind date tonight …. Their conversation was so risqué lol …. I was flabbergasted.”

And another said: “Donna & Damian are a bit much. Who has those chats on a first date?”

Ahead of her Celebs Go Dating debut, Donna spoke to The Sun about her previous relationships – confessing she once dated a murderer who is now in jail.

She said: “I’ve been in two long-term relationships and when I got out of that I went on a date and they ended up being a murderer.

“A real life murderer! He’s in jail though, so that’s nice.”

The death of the late night US chat show?

Stephen Colbert announced The Late Show would leave screens in May 2026

Stephen Colbert took viewers by surprise this week when he announced The Late Show would be heading for the big TV schedule in the sky.

The long-running series, which he has hosted since 2015, will leave screens next May. And not because Colbert is being replaced by a new presenter – the show is ending altogether.

Given the way the broadcasting winds are blowing, this cancellation is unlikely to be the last. Viewers will now be wondering whether Seth Meyers or one of the Jimmys – Fallon and Kimmel – might soon follow.

TV critic Emma Bullimore notes the late-night chat show format has historically thrived in the US in a way that other countries, including the UK, have always “admired but struggled to emulate”.

“Late night shows are a staple of American TV in the same way British television would look odd without soaps or afternoon quizzes,” she says. “This cancellation certainly comes as a surprise, both in the decision itself and the way it has been delivered.”

Some viewers were similarly taken aback. “I’m not big into late night TV anymore,” wrote one, “but this feels weird. The Late Show is an institution.” Another described the news as “really, really bad, not just for the state of late TV but also in a general sense for the state of media”.

But the traditional chat show format, which was created decades ago, finds itself facing several issues in the current television landscape.

Sabrina Carpenter is among Colbert’s recent guests, but there are far more publicity platforms now available to celebrities

For one thing, the kind of content they produce is arguably no longer compatible with audience appetite.

“These types of programmes are generally not a genre people will stream or watch via catch-up,” says Frances Taylor, TV Previews Editor at Radio Times. “They’re nightly and they’re topical and are therefore pretty much out of date just 24 hours later.

“It’s tricky for them to have life outside of that nightly broadcast, whereas dramas, documentaries and sitcoms don’t suffer from that problem.”

Added to which, it can be increasingly difficult for bookers to get good guests, and not just because they have four shows a week to fill.

Chat shows used to be one of the first places for publicists to offer their stars, but the huge number of competitors that have sprung up over the last 15 years has changed that.

Appearing on popular social media or YouTube formats such as Chicken Shop Date or Snack Wars arguably now hold more appeal, both for the celebrity, who can goof around and not reveal as much of much of themselves, and for their PR teams, who feel safer if they can keep their talent away from potentially more difficult questions.

That’s not to say viral moments can’t come from traditional TV. Chat shows have done their best to adapt to the times over the last decade.

Segments such as James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke and Fallon’s Wheel of Musical Impressions reflected a new blueprint, where features were invented with online appeal front of mind.

And it worked, too. Audiences love clips based on “bits” rather than chat. Graham Norton’s best performing YouTube clip, with more than 100m views, is the time Will Smith broke away from the sofa for an all-star musical performance.

Colbert has 10m YouTube subscribers – a healthy number for sure, but a weaker figure than Kimmel’s 20m and Fallon’s 32m.

It’s worth noting that, even before the invention of streaming, the world of US chat shows was always a competitive, dog-eat-dog world.

But the big TV advertising bucks that kept so many of them afloat have vanished, having gone down with the terrestrial TV ship.

Fundamentally, the format’s raison d’être is now under question. Taylor notes that, by the time chat shows are broadcast, “most people will already be across all of the major stories from the day”.

“Not only that, but their social feeds will be full of social creators feeding that appetite for topical, satirical content, be it with impressions of the US President or having an irreverent take on Elon Musk’s latest venture.”

She references John Mulaney’s recent attempt to bring a live chat show to Netflix, with mixed results.

Its future now looks uncertain, and Mulaney recently said he and the team were “figuring out” what their next move would be, stopping short of committing to a second season.

“That doesn’t exactly sound as though it was a runaway success,” Taylor says.

Political pressure?

Colbert has been one of President Trump’s most vocal critics, regularly using his chat show to throw punches

Colbert told viewers The Late Show’s cancellation was ultimately a financial decision – which is certainly a credible explanation.

Television is expensive to make, with huge teams of producers, directors, camera operators and other technical staff, not to mention the large fee for the presenter.

And while YouTubers can now offer an increasingly professional operation themselves, they can do so at a fraction of the cost.

But the cancellation still puzzled some. The Late Show was one of CBS’s top shows, attracting an average audience of 2.57m viewers in 2024.

Its ratings actually improved under Colbert, particularly after it began skewering the Trump administration – the host is one of the president’s most vocal critics.

As a result, some have questioned whether the show’s cancellation has anything to do with political pressure.

Its closure comes after CBS parent company Paramount settled with US President Donald Trump over the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris.

President Trump said the way his presidential rival’s answer to a question about Israel was presented on two different platforms made her look more favourable to viewers.

CBS noted at the time its settlement did not include a statement of apology or regret. Business commentators said the deal was made partly so as to not affect Paramount’s planned merger with Skydance Media, which Trump had the power to halt.

Speaking after the The Late Show’s cancellation was announced, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff said: “If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.”

The sentiment was echoed by Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, who noted the show’s cancellation came three days after Colbert’s criticism of the Paramount settlement.

There is no evidence that this was a factor – but it highlights the political climate in which this decision has been made.

In their statement announcing the end of The Late Show, CBS said it was a “purely financial decision” and “not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount”.

It’s not clear what will be next for Colbert himself. He may be snapped up by a streamer, or try to move his current show online.

Piers Morgan’s Uncensored provides a potential model – a programme which started on television and still looks like a TV show, but later moved, successfully, to YouTube.

The Late Show brand is “strong, storied and irreplaceable, and no host is funnier and more thoughtful – soulful – than Stephen Colbert”, said John Avlon, a media executive and former Democratic congressional nominee.

“That’s why he is loved by a loyal audience and they will follow him to whatever he does next.”

Other TV chat show hosts have found new formats in order to stay relevant. Colbert’s predecessor David Letterman was able to still attract A-list guests when he moved to Netflix in 2018 for a new series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.

If all else fails, there’s one other option available to Colbert. He is currently one of the only existing celebrities without his own podcast.
