A brand-new series of TLC’s The Bad Skin Clinic launches soon and it continues to see consultant dermatologist Dr Emma Craythorne tackling extreme skin problems
The Bad Skin Clinic, known for supporting patients at the end of their tether, is back with a new season on TLC and Discovery+ with episode one scheduled to air on Wednesday, January 21.
Dr Emma Craythorne returns along with her team of experts as they help patients with everything from common skin issues to rare and life-changing conditions.
In episode one, the team gets a visit from 38-year-old who has alopecia and has spent the past nine years hiding his head under a flat cap.
Since losing all of his hair, abnormal cysts formed and continued to grow bigger, causing a huge decline in Paul’s confidence.
In the series, Paul’s benign cysts are severed from his head, rendering him speechless and full of gratitude.
He said on the programme, which will air this week: “You notice people just looking and staring – it’s a natural thing for humans to wonder, but you know, sometimes it can be annoying.
“I accepted the hair loss, but then when the lumps came, it was a total game changer in terms of my confidence. Because of my condition, the lumps are very prominent, but I’ve only been able to hide them with the use of hats.”
Paul visited the clinic in central London, where Dr Emma carried out a scalp inspection, concluding he had “pilar cysts”.
She made a small incisions over the top of his head in order to take the cysts out, as she is heard saying: “Just going to pop this wee guy out. There we go, ta-da!”
After the first cyst was removed, Dr Emma joked: “Has this one got a name? We’ve called it ‘A’ – that’s how boring we are. This one’s Claudia, she’s a little bit more delicate than Clive.”
Paul’s skin was then stitched back together and Dr Emma repeated the process on three other lumps.
After the surgery was complete, Paul was handed a mirror so he could take a look at the transformation.
“Oh wow. That’s… wow. No words just thank you so much,” he responded, with his wife Sarah also at a loss for words.
“It’s really nice to be able to restore that symmetry and I think give him back some more self-confidence,” Dr Emma admitted.
The Bad Skin Clinic airs on Wednesday, January 21 at 9pm on TLC, and will be streaming on Discovery+
