The Netflix Western has divided viewers since it started airing.

The Abandons has just started airing on Netflix and the Western drama stars some huge names like Game of Thrones legend Lena Headey and The Fall icon Gillian Anderson.

The series has received mixed reviews from critics and viewers alike, with some hailing it “better than Yellowstone” and others criticising it as a “waste of time”.

The show boasts a star-studded cast and it is made up of seven episodes, with the finale leaving viewers on the edge of their seats with the ultimate battle.

There is a major cliffhanger at the end of the final episodes, which has left fans wondering whether all will be revealed in a second season.

There was some initial confusion over the episode count for season one as Netflix had initially green-lighted a 10-episode order.

Back in October 2022, Netflix commissioned screenwriter and director Kurt Sutter for the period action drama.

However, a couple of years later, it was reported Sutter had quit the show with a few weeks of shooting remaining.

By this stage, due to across-the-board budget cuts, the series length had been reduced from 10 episodes to seven.

At this moment in time, Netflix is yet to renew the series for a second season, with its future unconfirmed.

Judging by the cliffhanger at the end of the first season, it is clear the show hopes to return to provide some much-needed answers.

Anderson and Headey confirmed to TV Insider they’re interested in continuing the story, with Headey giving a confident “yes”.

The X-Files star Anderson did say there had not been any discussions about what the story could look like among the creative team.

“I don’t think there will be until we know what the response is,” she explained.

The co-stars did say they had “really great fun” filming their final fight scene, which took an entire day to film.
