Tourists warned to swerve Europe’s ‘most overrated city’ and head to quieter alternative instead

Using data from TripAdvisor, Numbeo, LightPollutionMap.info, and official tourist sources, 30 cities was scored across five stress factors: tourist density, hotel density, noise, light pollution, and crime rates

Popularity does not always equal quality.

At least that is according to Icelandair, which has commissioned analysis of 30 popular European destinations to highlight those which might be worth skipping when you come to booking your next holiday.

Using data from TripAdvisor, Numbeo, LightPollutionMap.info, and official tourist sources, each city was scored across five stress factors: tourist density, hotel density, noise, light pollution, and crime rates.

At the top of the pile was Florence in Italy. Known as the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence attracts more than 5.2 million visitors annually, which is the equivalent of around 10 tourists arriving every minute. Given its population of 362,000, each year roughly 15 tourists arrive for every local.

The majority of visitors are packed into the city centre, where most of Florence’s 2,000 hotels are located. Florence has one of the highest tourist and hotel densities in Europe. Add in heavy noise levels and some of the brightest light pollution recorded in this index, the city can feel less than tranquil.

I’ve visited Florence a number of times and have been taken aback by the intensity of the crowds. If you’re in town, you’ve got to lay your eyes on perhaps the world’s best known sculpture, Michelangelo’s David, who stands in all his marble-clad glory in the Accademia Gallery. If you do fancy a glimpse of that historically toned bod, then make sure you’ve got your elbows sharpened.

The area around David is always packed, and efforts to admire his splendour are often thwarted by an elevated selfie stick. It can be as dissatisfying an experience as viewing the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

Once you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle of the Accademia, you’ll have to re-gird your loins for a trip to the Uffizi Gallery, which sits next to the Piazza della Signoria. The gallery is packed full of works from the Italian Renaissance, having been gifted to the Uffizi when the House of Medici died out.

Top of most visitors’ list is a spot of serious swooning in front of two of Botticelli’s most famous paintings – Primavera and The Birth of Venus. They are both huge and both fantastic. However, much like David, getting close enough to have a decent look can be difficult.

Lucca is a great, calmer alternative (Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Once you’ve decided that you’ve had enough art for one day, you’d be forgiven for heading back to the Piazza della Signoria for a quick rest and recalibration. There you’ll find yourself bombarded with street performers, overheated children and worst of all, mimes.

While Florence should, arguably, be visited once in a lifetime, if you’re open to alternatives, then Lucca is a great choice. The city is about a quarter of the size and situated an hour’s train ride from Florence, closer to the Cinque Terre coastline and Pisa, meaning getting there from the region’s main airport is a breeze.

And if you do visit Lucca, you’ll quickly realise it’s no downgrade. I have spent several afternoons walking through and around the city on its perfectly preserved Renaissance-era defensive walls. They provide a wonderful route through Lucca and are largely free from crowds, beyond the occasional wandering local and cyclist.

In its medieval core, you will find attractions such as the Guinigi Tower, the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro and the birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini. Head to Piazza dell’Anfiteatro for a bite to eat when you’re down culture vulturing. It may be central and popular, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t lovely. In fact, it consistently hits a sweet spot of lively but not overwhelming.

Man Utd transfer breakdown: Ruben Amorim working on SIX Deadline Day deals including Sancho and Martinez updates

MANCHESTER UNITED are set for a make-or-break deadline day after failing to sell any players this window.

But Ruben Amorim’s side is running out of time with the window shutting at 7pm tonight.

Goalkeeper

United are keeping potential deals with Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens warm before deciding which one to go for.

Both players want to join Amorim’s side and were left out of their respective squads over the weekend. United aren’t in line to sign both goalkeepers.

£17million-rated Lammens, 23, is a project for the future, while World Cup winner Martinez can surely put things up between the sticks immediately.

SunSport understands Lammens is happy with the personal terms now on offer after talks stalled last week, and the Belgian wants to move to Old Trafford.

However, the Red Devils still need to agree a fee with Royal Antwerp, who are believed to be seeking £20 million.

Martinez, 32, would cost significantly more at around £40million and would demand higher wages in line with his current Villa Park deal, which still has five years left.

Antony

United winger Antony is expected to travel to Spain for a medical with Real Betis, where he enjoyed a revitalising six month loan last season.

He will take a significant pay cut to leave and will join Betis for £21.7m, with the deal made up of an initial £19m payment plus £3.4million in adds.

It stalled on Friday night due to a £4-5million loyalty bonus that the player felt he was due from Old Trafford chiefs.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho could follow in Marcus Rashford’s footsteps by joining Aston Villa on loan with hours left in the window.

Ruben Amorim says Man Utd deserved stoppage-time winner against Burnley

Villa Park chiefs have made contact with Sancho’s camp over personal terms but there is no agreement yet on either.

Sancho has one year left on his United deal.

Sancho, 25, seems the most likely Bomb Squad member to stay at the moment due to his outrageous £350,000-per-week wages.

Midfielders

Injuries to Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount have hit Kobbie Mainoo‘s slim chances of being allowed to leave United today.

The Red Devils were not willing to let him leave on loan anyway.

But the first half injury blows against Burnley have only hardened their resolve.

Tyrell Malacia

United are waiting for a suitable loan offer from LaLiga side Elche for left-back Tyrell Malacia, but it looks set to happen today.

Malacia enjoyed a loan spell at PSV last season where he won the Dutch league.

Harry Amass

Sheffield Wednesday are in talks with United over a move for left-back Harry Amass.

United will consider a straight season-long loan as Amass, 18, is still seen as one for the future.

The Team Behind the Team: Tour de France to Premier League – elite people supporting elite athletes

There are people and there is leadership, but numbers are becoming ever more influential in assessing performances and deciding who truly is the best of the best.

Speed, distances, heart rate, VO2 max aerobic capacity tests, biomechanics, injury risk, sleep, mood, stress, positions, heat maps, formations – it is too much for most of us to contemplate.

“Football is the hardest sport. You know, fundamentally, it’s hard to analyse because there are not many goals,” says Ian Graham, founder and CEO of analytics company Ludonautics.

“I was director of research at Liverpool Football Club for 11 years. In the Premier League, certainly every move is analysed.

“For every game, you get this data, which is this list of what happened, where and who did it. Most leagues now have something called tracking data, where you see 25 frames per second, the positions of all of the players. That tells you something about the off-ball impacts of players.”

It does not come cheap, though. Graham says it will cost anything from £1.5m to £3.5m for clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Brighton and Brentford, who are known to be invested in the numbers.

Then again, in football at least, that is a steal if you are paying £100m for a player.

Data will tell anybody with knowledge of how to use it an awful lot, but can athletes understand it themselves?

Certainly – just ask English golfer Lottie Woad, who recently won the Scottish Open aged 21, a week after turning professional in a sport which demands accuracy.

“I love data, so that’s kind of how my brain works,” Woad says.

“I record stats from each round and put them in a system called Upgame – it’ll tell you everything about your round, strokes gained and stuff like that.

“And then in my practice using launch monitors, showing you all the stuff you need for your technique as well as looking at ball flight, spin rates, stuff like that. It’s helped a lot.”

Incremental improvement is the name of the game, but there’s a more sophisticated phenomenon on the horizon which could change elite sport forever and needs a scientist, not a sports star, to explain.

“Artificial intelligence is a form of computer science. So it uses systems that can perform tasks which mirror human intelligence, such as the likes of problem-solving, decision-making and learning,” says the Open University’s Mark Antrobus.

“The real benefits of it is it can be used to collect and streamline data and data collection processes really quickly. We can identify patterns, and make predictions just like humans do through experience.”

Man arrested for allegedly ramming gate of Russia’s Sydney consulate

Sept. 1 (UPI) — Australian police on Monday arrested a man accused of driving an SUV into the gates of Sydney’s Russian consulate, according to authorities and Russian officials.

Russia’s Consulate General, located on Fullerton Street in Sydney, confirmed the crash in a statement on Telegram, stating the incident occurred at about 8:05 a.m. AEST.

It said the driver had parked the SUV so as to block access to the premises and refused police orders to exit the vehicle. He then “deliberately rammed the gates” of the mission, it said.

No consulate general employees reported injuries and operations continued as normal, the consulate added.

“Thanks to the coordinated actions of the competent Australian authorities, the intruder was promptly neutralized,” the consulate general said.

“He has been arrested and is providing testimony regarding the motives for his actions.”

New South Wales Police identified the driver in a statement as a 39-year-old man.

He has been charged with a slew of offenses, including three counts of damaging property, three counts of resisting arrest and possession of a knife in a public space.

No motive was mentioned.

Police said the suspect had parked the SUV in the consulate’s driveway, then jumped the mission’s fence and entered the consulate grounds before re-entering his vehicle.

After police attempted to speak to the man, he allegedly “accelerated the vehicle — ramming the front gate of the property — causing significant damage.”

The suspect was then removed from the vehicle, arrested and transported to the Surry Hills Police Station, it said.

Two constables — ages 22 and 25 — suffered minor injuries in the incident, NSW Police said, without specifying exactly how they were injured.

The suspect is to make his first court appearance Tuesday.

Egypt’s support for implementing China’s Global Development Initiative

Egypt’s strong support for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) spirit in Tianjin, China, 2025, and its tremendous support for the China-led and supported global development and security initiative, especially with the participation of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and his meeting with Cai Xi, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and his affirmation of Egypt’s strong support for the SCO spirit, headed by China, came on the sidelines of his participation on behalf of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus Summit hosted by the Chinese city of Tianjin.

During his meeting with a number of Chinese officials at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit 2025, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly affirmed the success of China’s global development initiatives, which are reflected in China’s development experience, as well as China’s efforts to eradicate poverty. He noted in this regard the Egyptian experience in confronting poverty, starting with the elimination of unsafe slum areas and continuing with the presidential initiative “Decent Life” to develop the Egyptian countryside and other projects.

The SCO countries, through the upcoming summit at Tianjin, China, in 2025, will adhere to the development concept of innovation, coordination, green development, openness, and sharing, and work together to carry out cooperation in the fields of digital economy, green development, and energy, and implement the Global Development Initiative. China and Egypt have extensive cooperation in these areas. They’re a significance of common development and implementing the Global Development Initiative for both China and Egypt within the SCO summit in 2025.

It is worth noting that the Chinese president launched the “Global Development Initiative” in 2021, with the aim of reorienting global development toward a new phase of comprehensive balance and coordination to address global shocks, promote more equitable and balanced global development partnerships, and achieve greater synergy through multilateral cooperation to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Egyptian government is keen to enhance South-South cooperation efforts and exchange expertise with emerging economies and developing countries. In this regard, the Ministry of International Cooperation in Egypt has relaunched the South-South Cooperation Academy in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It has also held numerous sessions and workshops to activate South-South cooperation mechanisms during the Egypt-ICF Forum for International Cooperation and Development Financing. A high-level session was also held in cooperation with the NEPAD Agency as part of the African Development Bank’s annual meetings, with the participation of 50 heads of international institutions and development partners, to discuss strengthening South-South cooperation.

Egypt’s full support for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s global development initiative comes as the vision of the two countries’ leaders, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and President Xi Jinping, is in line with the importance of aligning global development strategies and plans with the national priorities and needs of each country. It also emphasizes the need to apply the concept of financial justice, whether at the level of development financing in general or climate financing in particular, to enhance the ability of developing and emerging countries to implement their ambitions and catch up with the global development initiative.

Egypt’s full support for China’s development initiatives in developing countries of the South also underscores the role of South-South cooperation in promoting global development goals, in parallel with China’s comprehensive development initiative, fostering global economic recovery, and creating development models based on successful experiences in developing countries of the South.

Egypt’s cooperation portfolio with China to achieve sustainable development amounts to approximately $1.7 billion to implement numerous projects in various development sectors, including electricity, health, education, vocational training, and others.

Accordingly, we understand that Egypt aspires to enhance cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries under China’s leadership, particularly on international issues, including reforming the global order, eliminating double standards, and achieving justice and common development, to promote the “Shanghai Spirit” and all global development initiatives led and supported by China.

Woman who had a total glow up in her 50s looks decades younger & there’s one item you need to ditch

A WOMAN in her 50s has been flooded with praise online after showing off her massive “glow up” – and people are calling it “legendary.”

The brunette beauty named Kristina told how she achieved her flawless skin and youthful appearance without surgery or any invasive procedures.

So it’s little surprise people have been begging the brunette beauty to reveal her anti-ageing secrets.

Taking to TikTok (@kristina.maay), she penned: “When you’re a good-looking 50, but you were very ugly in your early 40s.”

In the clip, she shared a stunning video of herself revealing her flawless skin now – and there’s not a wrinkle in sight.

She then posted a series of photos from in her 40s to show just how much she believes she has changed.

In response to one person who commented that she must’ve had a change in money to achieve her new look, Kristina confirms: “No change in finances.

“I spent more before on my face tbh.”

Kristina also shared a second post shared to TikTok and went on to reveal some of the changes she made in just six years that she believes have helped to turn back the clock.

Firstly, she explains how she started using glycolic acid,
microcurrent, gua-sha and doing facial yoga.

Next, she made changes in her eating and started focusing on consuming a high protein diet.

Kristina also says she stopped eating gluten and started ditching alcohol and sugar.

As for exercise, she took up weight training and shed a whopping 5kgs.

“Weight loss is absolutely a massive glow up isn’t it?! Body composition changes are an even bigger glow up,” she wrote, in response to one social media user.

She notes that ditching the “ugly fake lashes” also helped to make a huge difference and says she also let her feather touch brows fade.

Along with having 2 pre-cancerous moles removes, Kristina also started her supplement regime.

Why is turmeric good for anti-ageing?

A study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that turmeric and curcumin may help prevent DNA damage and aid in DNA repair.

This is promising news for disease prevention and slowing the ageing process. It also:

Boosts Collagen Production: Collagen is a protein that maintains the skin’s elasticity and firmness. As we age, collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Turmeric helps stimulate collagen synthesis, thereby promoting firmer and more youthful skin.

Improves Skin Health: Turmeric has been shown to improve various skin conditions, such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help soothe the skin, reduce redness, and promote a clearer complexion.

It wasn’t long before the post went viral, racking up a whopping 408k views and several comments from very impressed social media users.

“Wow we who, what, where, when and HOW!!!” wrote one.

A second commented: “We are sat for lessons!”

A third wrote: “You are beautiful no matter what. Looking more sophisticated now and natural so well done.”

Meanwhile, a fourth added: “You were beautiful before, but the glow up is legendary!!!!”

Another praised: “You look so good now.”

A further noted: “You’re 50!?! You look amazing.”

And another pleaded: “So what’s the secret?”

I Can’t Lie, I’m Excited About Dollar General Stock After the Recent Earnings Report. Here’s Why

Dollar General beat expectations and raised its guidance for the rest of the year when it reported earnings.

Shares of Dollar General (DG -2.64%) are up around 45% so far in 2025. But they are also down more than 55% from their 2022 peak. The retailer’s strong second-quarter-2025 earnings update shows that the turnaround is still going strong. Here’s why I’m excited about Dollar General stock after reading its most recent earnings update.

What does Dollar General do?

Dollar General, as its name implies, is a dollar store. The term is a bit misleading, however. It sells a variety of products, from everyday necessities to clothing and seasonal items, at low prices. For example, it may sell a name brand consumer staples product, like toilet paper, just like another store, but the size of the product might be smaller. Buying a single roll is simply cheaper than buying 20 in a multipack from a club store, even if the per-roll cost from the club store is ultimately a better deal.

A person standing with a u turn sign on the ground in from of them.

Dollar General leans into its role of serving less affluent customers with its choice of store locations. The retailer purposely operates relatively small stores in mostly rural areas that are underserved by larger competitors. This makes it more convenient for a customer to stop by a Dollar General store than to drive to a big-box store, even though it might be cheaper to buy from the big box store.

Although Dollar General’s stores are kind of small, the company is actually quite large. It operates over 20,700 Dollar General, DG Market, DGX and pOpshelf stores across the United States (it also operates Mi Súper Dollar General stores in Mexico). It expects to complete over 4,800 real estate projects in fiscal year 2025. That list includes capital investments like renovating older stores but also the addition of as many as 575 new stores in the United States and 15 in Mexico.

Dollar General is turning things around

Although the stock has risen dramatically in 2025, that has erased only a small portion of the decline since late 2022. And that’s the opportunity for long-term investors. But the really big news from the second-quarter earnings update was the company’s financial and operational performance. A look at some income statement highlights tells a very exciting story.

Specifically, sales increased 5.1% year over year, hitting $10.7 billion. However, the real star was same-store sales, which measures the performance of existing locations. That metric rose 2.8%, driven by rising traffic (1.5 percentage points of that total) and an increase in the amount spent by customers on each visit (1.2 percentage points). To put that in plain English, more customers are showing up, and they are spending more.

Earnings for the quarter came in at $1.86, up 9% over the same quarter in 2024. And, notably, earnings came in well above Wall Street analyst expectations, beating consensus by roughly 18%. A big help to the bottom line was the company’s ability to increase its gross margin by 137 basis points year over year, led by less shrinkage, higher inventory markups, and less inventory damage.

This is all very good news and shows that the company’s turnaround effort is working. But the best part of the story is that management updated its full-year 2025 guidance, suggesting that the turnaround is set to continue. Previously, sales were projected to rise between 3.7% and 4.7%. Now they are expected to jump 4.3% to 4.8%. Same-store sales were updated similarly, with a slight increase on the top end and a material change at the low end of the guidance range. Basically, the worst-case scenario that management envisioned appears to be off the table.

There could be more upside from here

My excitement is tempered by the fact that Dollar General’s stock price has risen a great deal in a very short time. Wall Street appears to be aware of the positive reversal in the business dynamics. But that doesn’t change the fact that the stock remains well off its highs, hinting that there could be more room for recovery ahead. Perhaps it won’t happen as quickly as the initial turnaround, but if you think in decades and not days, Dollar General and its still-historically-high 2.1% dividend yield could be a good stock for a deep dive today.

The Sports Report: USC looks ready for prime time, UCLA does not

From Ryan Kartje: Five years ago, when USC first scheduled this 2025 season opener, the plan had been to go big, to test itself with a marquee, nonconference opponent that not only bolstered the Trojans’ strength of schedule but also captured the attention of college football. So, at the time, USC agreed to a home-and-home meeting with Mississippi, when Lane Kiffin, the Trojans’ former coach, would make his much-anticipated return to the Coliseum.

That matchup, of course, never came to fruition. The entire landscape of college football was upended in the meantime. Lincoln Riley became the coach. USC left the Pac-12 for the Big Ten. And the meeting with Mississippi was canceled, the rationale from USC’s leaders being there was no sensible reason, in the age of the expanding College Football Playoff, to test your team with top-tier nonconference competition.

Which is how Missouri State, in its first-ever matchup as a Football Bowl Subdivision program, wound at the Coliseum on Saturday, watching helplessly as USC stopped just short of stealing the Bears’ lunch money in a 73-13 season-opening beatdown.

It was the most points USC had scored in a football game since 1930, when it put up 74 points on California. But how much could USC really take from trouncing a team that finished fourth last season … in the Missouri Valley Conference? Before that, Missouri State had just one winning season at the FCS level over their previous 14.

“It’s a good start,” Riley said. “It’s nothing more than that. It’s nothing less than that. It’s a really good start. It’s always great when you’re able to play a lot of guys right there in the beginning. It’s healthy for the football team.”

From Ben Bolch: From the first snap of training camp, DeShaun Foster tightly controlled any narratives about his team.

Reporters never knew how much — or little — of UCLA’s practice sessions they would get to watch, one day being limited to eight minutes of stretching. Mostly they saw individual drills, field goals and — in recent weeks — one snap of the full offense going against the defense.

Photography and video were banned, even at a Rose Bowl practice open to spectators who faced no such restrictions. Foster preferred to let the team’s social media posts and internally produced video series suffice as the story of his team.

As of late Saturday night, the story could no longer be kept secret.

The Bruins don’t appear to be any good.

In a clunker of a season opener, they couldn’t tackle on defense or consistently move the ball on offense behind new quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

While it’s important to throw in the caveat that it’s just one game, UCLA’s 43-10 loss to Utah at the Rose Bowl represented a giant step backward after the Bruins had closed their first season under Foster with four wins in their final six games.

DODGERS

From Kevin Baxter: The Dodgers have won 71 games since Tyler Glasnow earned his last victory.

That was March 31, 152 days ago. The season was six games old then. No other pitcher with at least 13 major league starts has gone longer without a win this season.

Yet Glasnow was never deserving of a better fate than he was Saturday, when he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and a shutout into the seventh, only to wind up with the loss when the Dodgers fell 6-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the Padres beating the Minnesota Twins, the Dodgers’ lead in the National League West is back at one game.

HORSE RACING

From John Cherwa: Journalism, running for the first time against older horses, ran to a valiant second place in the $1-million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Saturday. The winner was Fierceness, a multiple stakes winner who was the post-time favorite in last year’s Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The race lost a lot of luster when Nysos, the 8-5 morning-line favorite, scratched from the race with a bruise to his right outside quarter hoof. It’s not a serious issue and Nysos may be pointed to the Goodwood Stakes on Sept. 27 at Santa Anita, trainer Bob Baffert told Horse Racing Nation.

Journalism, winner of the Preakness Stakes and second in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, has not finished out of the exacta this year in seven starts. In his last start he won the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park and got a free entry to the $7-million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Del Mar.

2018 — Aaron Donald of the Rams becomes the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player. The All-Pro defensive tackle agrees to a six-year, $135-million deal, which surpasses Von Miller’s contract in Denver as the new benchmark for defenders.

THIS DAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY

1909 — The A.J. Reach Company was granted a patent for its cork-centered baseball, which replaced the hard rubber-cored one. This change will be particularly apparent in the National League in 1910 and 1911.

1915 — Jim Lavender of the Chicago Cubs pitched a 2-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Giants.

1935 — Vern Kennedy of the Chicago White Sox pitched a no-hitter to beat Cleveland 5-0. Kennedy also had a bases-loaded triple.

1937 — Rudy York of the Tigers hit his 17th and 18th home runs of the month to set a major league record as Detroit beat Washington 12-3.

1950 — Brooklyn’s Gil Hodges tied a major league record by hitting four homers against the Boston Braves in the Dodgers’ 19-3 rout. Hodges also added a single for 17 total bases and drove in nine runs. Brooklyn pitcher Carl Erskine singled in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings.

1959 — Sandy Koufax struck out 18 Giants for a National League record as the Dodgers beat San Francisco 5-2.

1965 — Boston catcher Russ Nixon tied a major-league record with three run-scoring sacrifice flies in the second game at Washington. Boston won 8-5, after taking the opener, 4-0.

1974 — In a Northwest League game, Portland manager Frank Peters rotated his players so each man played a different position each inning. The strategy worked for an 8-7 win over Tri-Cities.

1990 — The Griffeys — 20-year-old Ken Jr. and his dad, Ken, 40 — made major league history, leading Seattle to a 5-2 victory over Kansas City. The Griffeys were the first father and son to play together in the big leagues.

1998 — Cubs OF Sammy Sosa ties Mark McGwire by hitting his 55th home run in Chicago’s 5 – 4 win over Cincinnati. Sosa has hit 30 of his homers at Wrigley Field, three short of Hack Wilson’s Cub record and tying him with Ernie Banks.

2001 — Pitcher Danny Almonte, who dominated the Little League World Series with his 70-mph fastballs, was ruled ineligible after government records experts determined he actually was 14, and that birth certificates showing he was two years younger were false. The finding nullified all the victories by his Bronx, N.Y., team, the Rolando Paulino Little League All-Stars, and wiped out all its records — including Almonte’s perfect game and an earlier no-hitter.

2004 — Omar Vizquel went 6-for-7 to tie the American League record for hits for a nine-inning game in Cleveland’s 22-0 victory over the New York Yankees. The 22-0 beating, was the largest loss in the history of the Yankees’ organization. Cleveland matched the largest shutout win in the major leagues since 1900, set by Pittsburgh against the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 16, 1975.

2005 — Florida’s Jeremy Hermida became the first player in more than a century and the second to hit a grand slam in his first major league at-bat, connecting in the seventh inning off the St. Louis Cardinals’ Al Reyes.

2005 — Albert Pujols hit an RBI triple in St. Louis’ 10-5 victory over the Florida Marlins, giving him 100 RBIs this season. Pujols became the first player in major league history to hit at least 30 home runs and drive in 100 runs in his first five seasons in the majors.

2010 — Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman reached 102 mph during one perfect inning, and Cincinnati beat Milwaukee 8-4. Chapman joined the Reds’ bullpen and matched the hype his first time out, throwing four pitches clocked at 100 mph or better.

2011 — Two milestone home runs — Chipper Jones’ 450th and Derek Lowe’s first — gave Atlanta the early lead and Lowe combined with three relievers on a three-hitter in a 3-1 victory over Washington. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 41st save, setting a major league rookie record.

2019 — Minnesota Twins hit six home runs in a 10-7 loss to the Tigers to break an MLB record by hitting 268 home runs in a season.

2022 — Shohei Ohtani adds another item to his ever-growing list of achievements when he homers off Gerrit Cole of the Yankees in the 6th inning of the Angels’ 3-2 win. With that, he becomes the first player ever to hit 30 homers and record 10 wins in the same season, a feat not even Babe Ruth managed to achieve.

Putin blames West for Ukraine war at China-led SCO summit | Russia-Ukraine war News

The Russian president defends the military campaign in Ukraine, blaming NATO and Western policies for the conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed the West for igniting the war in Ukraine, insisting Moscow’s assault was provoked by years of Western provocations.

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the Chinese city of Tianjin on Monday, Putin accused NATO of destabilising the region and dismissed claims that Russia triggered the war.

“This crisis was not triggered by Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but was a result of a coup in Ukraine, which was supported and provoked by the West,” Putin told the gathering of regional leaders. He was referring to the 2013-14 pro-European uprising that toppled Ukraine’s then-President Viktor Yanukovych.

Russia responded to the revolution by annexing Crimea and backing separatists in eastern Ukraine, leading to a conflict that has left tens of thousands dead and devastated large parts of the country.

Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 escalated the fighting, prompting sweeping sanctions from the United States and the European Union and deepening Russia’s isolation from the West, though not from the rest of the international community.

Putin said Western efforts to draw Ukraine into NATO were a key driver of the war, reiterating that Russia’s security concerns must be addressed before any peace deal can be reached.

“For the Ukrainian settlement to be sustainable and long-term, the root causes of the crisis must be addressed,” he said.

The Russian president highlighted talks he held with US President Donald Trump in August, describing the discussions as “opening a way to peace”. He praised diplomatic efforts from Beijing and New Delhi, saying their proposals could “facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis”.

Putin met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday to discuss Ukraine and said he would expand on those talks in bilateral meetings with leaders on the sidelines of the summit. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are also attending.

Moscow and Beijing have promoted the SCO as a counterweight to Western-led alliances, with Putin arguing the world needs a “system that would replace outdated Eurocentric and Euro-Atlantic models”.

Despite repeated calls from Trump for Moscow and Kyiv to negotiate, peace efforts have faltered. Russia has rejected ceasefire proposals and demanded that Ukraine cede more territory, conditions Kyiv has dismissed as unacceptable.

“For the Ukrainian settlement to be sustainable and long-term, the root causes of the crisis must be addressed,” said Putin.

Part of the source of the conflict “lies in the ongoing attempts by the West to bring Ukraine into NATO”, he said.

Putin also held talks with Modi and Erdogan, and is expected to meet Pezeshkian later on Monday as he seeks to bolster diplomatic backing amid the drawn-out conflict.

Did this clock belong to JFK? Inside one man’s decades-long obsession

Bill Anderson was close to 70 when he first spotted the clock.

It looked like a ship’s wheel, a kitschy bit of decor you might see at a nautically themed bar. But he was drawn to it because of its maker.

Timepieces from Chelsea Clock Co. were renowned for their design and precision. The company’s clocks could once be found on Navy battleships during World War II, and adorned mantels, walls and desks at the White House for presidents ranging from Dwight Eisenhower to Joe Biden.

Anderson, a retired watchmaker and collector, was particularly interested in the base of the Chelsea Comet, which was engraved with the initials “J.F.K.”

John Fitzgerald Kennedy?

Although watch collectors obsess over celebrity ownership, and a Camelot connection counts for a lot, the prospect of a payday was only part of the allure for Anderson.

The mystery of the clock’s provenance — could it possibly be the real deal? — has animated his life for years. This, Anderson said, “is a nice game that I’ve got going here.”

He’d purchased the clock in 1999 from a seller on EBay, a New Hampshire dealer who’d picked it up at an estate sale in Wellesley, Mass., for $280.

In the intervening years, Anderson, who is 95, has plumbed the cloistered world of clock collectors. His hunt would take him to the online message boards of watch and clock aficionados, and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. It would eventually lead to a refrigerated vault 200 feet below ground in a former limestone mine in rural Pennsylvania.

Anderson, who lives in Eugene, Ore., may not use the word “obsession” to describe his interest in his J.F.K. clock, but others do. All those decades he’s spent trying to uncover its backstory are evidence of its almost gravitational pull.

Anderson, whose parents ran a grocery store, grew up in Roseburg, Ore., south of Eugene. In the late 1940s, he left the University of Oregon after just one quarter and enrolled in a watchmaking school run by the Elgin National Watch Co.

Anderson’s maternal grandfather had been in the trade. “I leaned over his watchmaker’s bench and watched him as a little boy,” he explained. “He let me have the insides of an alarm clock … that was the beginning of it.”

In time, Anderson became a retail liquidator, helping to close jewelry and watch stores and sell their remaining inventories. Along the way, Anderson married and started a family. He gained a reputation as an honest broker — and for being able to spot the value in merchandise that others couldn’t sell.

“Bill is like the George Washington of people — you know, ‘I cannot tell a lie,’ that type of thing,” said Errol Stewart, a Maine watchmaker who has known Anderson for about 40 years.

In 1974, Anderson paid $15,000 for the inventory of a jeweler in Baker City, Ore., selling what he could and bringing the leftovers home. Forty years later, he came across them while cleaning out his attic; among the wares was an old football helmet.

It turned out to be a rare Spalding head harness from the early 1900s. No more than 10 are believed to still be in existence, and Anderson sold it for about $14,000.

He has retained more than 200 timepieces for his collection, including several from Chelsea, and has watched the prices for celebrity-owned timepieces surge in the last few decades.

The market for those with ties to the Kennedys is particularly strong. Jacqueline Kennedy’s Cartier Tank sold for nearly $380,000 in 2017, and JFK’s Omega fetched $420,000 in 2005.

“With Kennedy you get the highest multiplication factor for any political figure,” said Paul Boutros, who heads the U.S. watch business for Phillips, a London-based auction house.

Anderson knew if he could confirm the ownership, it would be a boon — perhaps a capstone to his legacy as a watchmaker and collector. The first thing he did was get in touch with Chelsea to request the clock’s certificate of origin.

When it arrived, the spot for the original buyer’s name was marked “no record.” Could that have been a courtesy extended to a VIP customer? JFK’s father, Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., had visited the company’s headquarters in Massachusetts — home to the Kennedy clan — where he purchased several items.

Chelsea had published a feature on its website about in-house master clockmaker Jean Yeo that touched on that celebrity connection. She said that she began working at Chelsea in 1951, a time when “all of the Kennedys came in here” and had special praise for the family’s patriarch, calling him a “nice guy” who talked to her about her work.

But Anderson wasn’t sure what to think. The growing allure of watches with A-list history was enticing people to peddle dubious timepieces.

In 2005, a Rolex that was said to be a gift from Marilyn Monroe to JFK was auctioned for $120,000. The gold Day-Date, reportedly given by the actress to the president in 1962 on the occasion of his 45th birthday, featured an inscription that reads, “Jack / With love as always / from / Marilyn.” But collectors and watch scholars have noted that the timepiece in question featured a serial number that dated it to 1965.

At one point in his search, Anderson had a breakthrough when he discovered an online photograph of the future president and his wife at home in 1954. A clock was positioned on a desk, and it looked just like Anderson’s Comet, but the low-resolution picture was so blurry that any engraving it may have had was impossible to discern.

(Bettmann Archive)

James Archer Abbott, co-author of “Designing Camelot: The Kennedy White House Restoration and Its Legacy,” said there was no record of the Comet having been displayed at the White House, and cautioned that if it were important to the family, it probably would have been earmarked for JFK’s presidential library. A representative of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum said that it has no record of or information on the Comet clock.

But Tony LaChapelle, president of Chelsea, was open to the possibility that it had once been owned by JFK.

“Could somebody who had nothing better to do in their life take that photo of JFK, Jackie and that clock, and get a Comet clock and try to capitalize on that? I suppose they could,” he said. “We look at [Anderson’s ] clock and we look at that photo of [JFK’s clock] sitting out on the table, and in our opinion it is highly probable” they were one and the same.

Anderson tried to find the original high-resolution image for years but couldn’t turn anything up. No one seemed to know the source of the photo. There were tens of thousands of pictures of JFK to comb through online. Or more.

But eventually, after a serpentine, multiyear effort, the whereabouts of the original negative were finally uncovered. It was in a photo archive stored inside a Boyers, Pa., facility known as the Iron Mountain, a formidable place that securely maintains records of all types, including for the federal government.

The Bettmann Archive, which comprises millions of photos and is managed by Getty Images, is housed in a section of the Mountain that’s more than 10 stories underground.

Last year, an archivist located the negative and brought it to one of Bettmann’s labs, where she placed it on a flatbed scanner. Soon, a new, ultra-high-resolution version of the 1954 image glowed on her computer screen. The clarity was remarkable.

The Comet could be clearly seen in the photo, including the clock’s wooden base.

It was blank.

When he heard the news — relayed via telephone — Anderson grew quiet.

But he offered no lamentations and later he said he wasn’t disappointed: “Not a bit.” He’d come to realize how important the hunt had been for him, especially after his wife, Sallie, died in July 2023. She was 93.

“She understood that I loved that kind of stuff,” he said.

The research made a dark time just a little easier.

During a recent interview, Anderson sat at his dining room table, where there was an array of photos of his wife. The Comet was there too. He explained that over the last year or so, he has asked each of his five children to select clocks from his collection that they will inherit when he dies.

“I don’t know how many more miles down the road I’ve got,” he said.

But Anderson has yet to offer the Comet. “Why that hasn’t happened yet, I don’t know,” he said.

One of his sons, Mike Anderson, a watchmaker who owns Anderson Jewelers in Corvallis, Ore., has an idea. “There’s no doubt in my mind he wants to link [the clock] to JFK — he wants to believe that that was on his desk,” the younger Anderson said. “That’s what drives him.”

After all these years, Anderson still loves the chase.

3 Dividend Stocks I Plan to Invest $250 Into This Week for Passive Income

These dividend stocks should supply me with steadily rising payments.

I’m on a mission to reach financial freedom through passive income. My goal is to build multiple income streams that combine to eventually cover my basic living expenses, thereby eliminating the stress of having to earn money to meet my financial needs.

Every week, I aim to make progress toward this financial goal. This time, I plan to invest $250 into three leading dividend stocks: Coca-Cola (KO 0.94%), Camden Property Trust (CPT 1.12%), and W.P. Carey (WPC 0.90%). I believe these companies offer great potential to help me achieve my passive income ambitions.

The word dividends next to money.

Satisfying income-seeking investors for decades

Coca-Cola has a terrific record of paying dividends. The global beverage giant has paid dividends for over a century, while increasing its payout for 63 consecutive years. That qualifies it for the elite group of Dividend Kings, companies that have had 50 or more consecutive years of annual dividend increases. Coca-Cola has been growing its payout at a low- to mid-single-digit rate in recent years.

The iconic beverage company’s dividend currently yields about 3%. That’s more than double the S&P 500‘s dividend yield, which is around 1.2%.

Coca-Cola generates significant cash flow, enabling it to reinvest in growing its business while paying its lucrative dividend. The company expects its capital investments to drive 4%-6% annual organic revenue growth over the long term, which should support mid- to high-single-digit annual earnings-per-share growth. Coca-Cola also has an A-rated balance sheet, giving it the financial flexibility to make acquisitions as attractive growth opportunities arise. Since 2016, a quarter of the company’s earnings growth has come from acquisitions. Those drivers should enable Coca-Cola to continue growing its cash flows and dividends.

Cashing in on demand for rental housing

Camden Property Trust is a real estate investment trust (REIT) focused on owning multifamily properties. The landlord owns nearly 60,000 apartment units across 15 major markets in the southern half of the country. It invests in metro areas benefiting from strong employment and population growth trends. That drives demand for rental housing.

The REIT has paid a stable and steadily rising dividend over the past decade and a half. While Camden hasn’t increased its dividend every single year, it has been on a steady upward trajectory since the REIT reset its dividend during the financial crisis. The company’s payout currently yields around 3.8%.

Camden expects to deliver consistent earnings and dividend growth in the future. Its apartment portfolio should benefit from strong demand for rental housing, which should keep occupancy levels high while driving steady rent growth. Camden also has a strong financial profile, enabling it to invest in expanding its portfolio by acquiring stabilized apartment communities and starting new development projects. These growth drivers should enable Camden to continue increasing its dividend.

Building back better

W.P. Carey is a diversified REIT. It owns operationally critical commercial real estate (retail, industrial, warehouse, and other properties) across North America and Europe, secured by long-term net leases with built-in rental escalation clauses. These properties produce very stable rental income that rises each year.

The REIT has increased its dividend every single quarter since resetting the payment at the end of 2023. W.P. Carey realigned its dividend with its expected cash flows after exiting the office sector by selling and spinning off those properties. That strategy shift enabled the company to focus on properties with better long-term growth potential.

W.P. Carey has been steadily rebuilding its dividend (which currently yields 5.4%) and its portfolio. It spent $1.6 billion on new property investments last year and is on track to invest at a similar rate this year. That should enable it to grow its cash flow per share at a mid-single-digit annual rate, supporting a similar dividend growth rate.

Ideal passive income stocks

Coca-Cola, Camden Property Trust, and W.P. Carey are excellent fits for my passive income investment strategy. They pay dividends with above-average yields that steadily grow. As a result, they enable me to generate an attractive and growing stream of dividend income. Investing an additional $250 in these stocks this week will add nearly $10 to my annual passive income total, bringing me a little closer to achieving financial independence.

Matt DiLallo has positions in Camden Property Trust, Coca-Cola, and W.P. Carey. The Motley Fool has no position in any of the stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

It also has an impressive Megaways collection and is regularly featured as part of network progressive jackpots.

SpinzWin also serves up one of the best multi-part welcome packages around, offering 50 free spins on your first deposit, followed by 25% up to £200, 50% up to £200, and 50% up to £600 on your next three. These are complemented perfectly by features such as the Wheel of Vegas, allowing players to win exclusive jackpots on each spin.

I’m also a big fan of the site’s stylish black and green colour scheme, which is very easy on the eyes and makes for a smooth customer experience. Top this off with a good range of payment methods and a welcome bonus worth up to £200, and you’ve got a winning combination.

6. VideoSlots

  • Minimum PayPal deposit: £10
  • Minimum PayPal withdrawal: £10

With a name like VideoSlots, it would be a surprise if a huge game catalogue wasn’t the order of the day here, and the site certainly lives up to that billing. With over 9,000 games in its catalogue, VideoSlots has quickly become my go-to site for online slots, especially those that are tough to find elsewhere.

The site is more than just its mammoth games catalogue, though. It also features a generous welcome bonus of up to £200 for new customers, as well as a plethora of jackpot titles and regularly updated promotions, all of which can be claimed using PayPal.

7. PokerStars

  • Minimum PayPal deposit: £5

The site has a stacked online slot selection, featuring titles from the likes of Blueprint Gaming, Hacksaw, and more. It is also home to one of the most unique live casino catalogues in the UK, with exclusive blackjack and roulette titles available.

It also tempts players in with a hugely generous welcome bonus worth up to £500 when they use the promo code FIRST500. The site will also chuck in 50 free spins for good measure.

  • Minimum PayPal withdrawal: £10

If you want a site with a little more pizzazz, then Duelz could be the operator for you. The site has a unique fantasy theme that makes you feel like you have been dropped in a casino in the middle of Clash of Clans. The site is more than just its wacky theme though, with players being able to try their luck on over 2,000 games.

One thing I love about Duelz is how the site has managed to incorporate its theme into so many different areas, with the unique quests and promotions keeping players coming back for more. It also welcomes new players with a generous £100 bonus and 100 free spins to be used on Book of Dead, all of which can be claimed by making a real money PayPal deposit.

9. Virgin Games

  • Minimum PayPal deposit: £10
  • Minimum PayPal withdrawal: £10

Virgin is an internationally recognised brand, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that its online casino, Virgin Games, offers a high-quality online playing experience. I found the site’s game variety to be one of its biggest attractions, with the online bingo and Slingo sections helping it stand out from other top UK online PayPal casinos.

It is a fantastic site for pursuing big wins and jackpots, and it offers a smooth customer experience to back this up. Players can deposit funds with a range of methods, and the site also offers instant withdrawals and 24/7 customer support.

10. Betrino

  • Minimum PayPal deposit: £10
  • Minimum PayPal withdrawal: £10

Finally, wrapping up our list of the best PayPal casinos in the UK is Betrino. This is a site that was first brought to my attention last year. It is owned and operated by ProgressPlay, a company with a reputation for creating top-quality casinos, and Betrino reinforces that. The site allows players to deposit and withdraw with a range of methods, including PayPal, PayviaPhone, Visa/Mastercard, and more, and boasts an impressive games lobby.

🤔 How to use PayPal at an online casino

PayPal is one of the most popular payment methods for online casino players in the UK, and one of the biggest reasons for that is how easy the service is to use. I’ve personally been using PayPal to play at online casinos for over a decade, and have always found it one of the most reliable services on the net. If you want to use PayPal at a UK online casino, you can begin by following these steps.

1. How to make a PayPal account

Before you play at an online casino using PayPal, you are going to need to set up a PayPal account. This is an easy process that takes a matter of minutes. To begin, visit the PayPal site or download the casino app from the Google Play or App Store.

The first question PayPal will ask is whether you want to open a business or a personal account. For most players, it will be a personal account.

You will then be required to enter your email address and phone number. Once you have done this and verified both, your account will be active. The next step is to link your bank account to your PayPal profile, which will allow you to store cash and make deposits and withdrawals.

2. How to sign up for a PayPal casino

Now you have a PayPal account, the next step is to sign up with a PayPal casino. You can follow these steps:

  • Choose a PayPal casino from the ones listed in this guide.
  • Click on the registration button and begin the sign-up process.
If required, make sure you enter any bonus codes needed to claim the casino’s welcome bonus.
  • Provide any personal information the casino asks for. This is typically an email, phone number, and address. You will also need to enter your password.
  • Verify your account details and complete the registration process.

3. How to deposit with PayPal

Once your casino is set up, you can head to the cashier and make your first deposit using PayPal.

  • When you click on the PayPal option, a separate window will open prompting you to log in to your PayPal account.
  • Enter your login details and verify your account.
  • You will then return to the casino and can enter the amount you would like to deposit and complete the transaction.
  • You will not need to enter any of your bank details at the casino.

4. How to withdraw funds with PayPal

If you are lucky enough to have landed some wins at a PayPal UK casino, then you will need to be able to withdraw them safely and quickly.

  • To withdraw using PayPal, head to the cashier, click withdraw, and then choose PayPal as your method.
  • You may need to verify your PayPal account depending on your settings.
  • Players should know that they can only use PayPal for a withdrawal if it was previously used for a deposit.
  • The speed of the withdrawal will depend on how quickly the casino processes the request.
  • Casinos have become much quicker at this in recent years, with many casinos offering instant withdrawals

Choosing the best PayPal casinos is no easy process. Our team has a dedicated set of criteria we apply to each casino review, known as ‘The Sun Factor’. The following are some of the most important factors considered when reviewing a PayPal casino.

  • Welcome bonus: You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and this is something online casinos in the UK understand better than anybody. When we are deciding which PayPal casinos to recommend, we always pay close attention to the welcome bonus, being sure to check its terms and conditions and wagering requirements. Of course, the size of the bonus also plays a huge role.
  • Ongoing promotions: While a good welcome bonus will get you through the door, the best online casinos are the ones that reward you for sticking around. When reviewing PayPal casinos, we check their ongoing promotions and how frequently they are updated. Our Sun Factor review system also rewards casinos for being innovative and offering different bonus types to their customers.
  • Licensing: All of the PayPal casinos we recommend at The Sun are licensed and regulated by the United Kingdom Gambling Commission. The UKGC is one of the most respected gambling regulators in the world, and by holding a license from them, a casino is displaying to its customers that their well-being and security are a priority.
  • Mobile compatibility: Mobile gameplay is an essential part of the modern online casino experience, and we test every casino we recommend on an Android and iOS device. Where possible, we also review a casino’s mobile app.
  • Customer support: Having access to around-the-clock customer support can make a big difference to an online casino player. As such, when we review an online casino, we will to see what customer support options it has, as well as the availability hours.
  • Available payment methods: While we are focused on PayPal in this guide, variety is the spice of life, and it is always good for players to have alternative options. It is not just the methods we factor in, but also the limits and the withdrawal speed.
  • Game selection: A casino can score high marks in all of the above, but if it does not offer a good range of games, are you really going to want to sign up? When we review a casino, we note not only the number of games available, but also the quality of the developers it works with. We also want to see a diverse range of game types, including slots, live casino, crash games, and more.

👍 Advantages of using PayPal at online casinos

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest advantages of using PayPal to deposit at top online casinos.

  • Enhanced privacy: PayPal essentially acts as a middleman between players and the casino, which is brilliant for players who are more conscious of their online privacy and security. This means you never have to share your banking details directly with an operator. PayPal also has fantastic security features, with the company utilising the latest in encryption technology to ensure players’ personal information is kept secure.
  • No fees: In almost all instances, online casinos will not charge you a fee for using PayPal to make a deposit or withdrawal. Players should be aware, however, that PayPal may charge a fee when you attempt to transfer funds from your PayPal account to your bank account.
  • Well-established and trusted brand: PayPal is a globally recognised brand with a glowing reputation worldwide. The company has been in operation for nearly three decades, and it has managed to maintain its position as the world’s most popular e-wallet for a reason.
  • Widely available: PayPal is available at many of the UK’s top online casinos, making it an extremely attractive proposition for players who have accounts with multiple casinos.
  • Easy to use: Setting up, depositing and withdrawing with PayPal is an extremely easy process. The service is available on desktop, mobile, and as an app, and is known for its user-friendly interface and ease of use.
  • Speedy transactions: While other methods are now catching up, one of the reasons PayPal became so popular among casino players is the speed of its transactions. In many instances, players can withdraw funds from an online casino in less than 24 hours and in some cases, instantly.

👎 Disadvantages of using PayPal

As with any payment method, there are also some downsides to using PayPal at online casinos in the UK. While the good considerably outweighs these, it is still important to make you aware of some of the bigger issues you might encounter using a PayPal casino.

  • Bonus exclusion: While it is not as commonly restricted from casino bonuses as other payment methods like Skrill and Neteller, it is not unheard of for PayPal deposits to be excluded from welcome bonuses and other promotions. As such, make sure you read through the terms & conditions of any bonuses before claiming to see if PayPal is eligible.
  • PayPal fees: As I’ve already addressed in this UK PayPal casino guide, it is uncommon for a casino to charge you for using PayPal to make a deposit or a withdrawal. However, PayPal commonly has charges for withdrawing funds to your bank account.

🔒 Security at online casinos with PayPal

For many players, one of the biggest selling points of PayPal is that it is so secure. The service utilises many modern security features, each of which is designed to ensure customers are kept safe when playing at online casinos or using the service for other reasons. The following are some of its key features:

  • Data encryption: PayPal uses advanced encryption technology to ensure players’ personal and financial details are kept safe from third-parties.
  • Fraud detection software: PayPal uses advanced fraud-detection technology to alert customers if suspicious activities are taking place on their accounts.
  • Two-Factor Authentication: Two-factor authentication (2FA) has become one of the most widespread security measures across the internet in recent years. When this is turned on, players will need to enter their password and another piece of information to be able to access their account. This is typically a verification code sent to your phone or email address.

PayPal also offer buyer protection, which protects customers to open a disputes regarding purchases and get refunds. However, this is not available for use at online casinos.

🎰 PayPal features relevant to online gambling

PayPal offers many features that are extremely useful to online gamblers. Let’s break them down and see how they are relevant to online gambling:

  • Instant transfer: This one is pretty self-explanatory. The quicker you can get your funds in and out of a casino, the better. Instant transfers allow you to deposit funds instantly and be playing your favourite online slots within a matter of seconds.
  • Cross device access: As I’ve already mentioned in this guide to the UK’s best PayPal casinos, PayPal is available on different devices and platforms, adding an extra level of convenience to the online gambling experience. PayPal is supported on desktop and mobile devices, and also has a mobile app that can be downloaded for free on the Google Play Store and the App Store.
  • Multiple currency support: While this is not generally needed for online casinos in the UK, it can be useful to use if you have another currency in your PayPal account and you want to convert it before depositing at a UK online casino.
  • Linked bank/card fallback: A handy feature at PayPal that provides customers with some assurances is the bank/card fallback. Essentially, if you attempt to make a deposit from your account and there is not enough money, it will look to your other funding source to ensure you can cover the deposit. So if you attempt to deposit £10 and your PayPal account only has £8, it will take £2 from your bank account if that is the primary linked source.

🪙 Deposit fees and other costs when using PayPal

In almost all instances, UK online casinos will not charge players a fee for using PayPal to make deposits or withdrawals on their site. I would, however, recommend you read through all of the terms & conditions of an individual site before you attempt to deposit or withdraw using PayPal, or reach out to the customer support team to be on the safe side.

Players should be aware, however, that PayPal will charge you a fee for making an instant transfer from your PayPal account back to your bank account. This is typically a percentage of the withdrawal amount, and is currently 1%.

💳 Alternative payment methods to PayPal

For many players, PayPal reigns supreme as the best e-wallet service for depositing and withdrawing funds at online casinos. It is not, however, the only one available. The following are the most popular alternative methods you will encounter:

  • Visa/Mastercard debit cards: Debit cards are by far the most popular way to deposit and withdraw funds from online casinos. Accessibility and ease of use continue to be the driving factors behind this, with everyone having access to a bank account. It is important to note that UK players can not make a deposit using a credit card.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: If you are a mobile casino player, there’s a good chance you use Apple Pay or Google Pay regularly. These are virtual wallets that allow you to make instant deposits and withdrawals from your bank account.
  • Skrill: Skrill is arguably the second-most popular e-wallet in the UK and is available at many top UK casinos. The service is not quite as popular as PayPal, largely due to PayPal’s wider availability, and it is often excluded from bonuses and promotions. Still, it remains a solid choice for those looking for alternative payment methods.
  • Neteller: Like Skrill, Neteller is another popular e-wallet that has become increasingly common at top online casinos. It offers a good alternative to PayPal, but is also regularly excluded from bonuses.
  • PaysafeCard: PaysafeCard is a pre-paid service that customers can use to deposit funds at top online casinos. The service is one of the safest and most private on the internet, but it is regularly excluded from promotions and can not be used for withdrawals.

Conclusion: Why choose PayPal for online gambling?

As you can see throughout this guide, there are many perks to using PayPal to play at top online casinos in the UK. Not only is it one of the most available methods for depositing and withdrawing real money, but it is also one of the safest and easiest to use. It is also available on mobile and desktop devices, making it one of the best all-around payment service providers to use at UK casinos.

Women’s Rugby World Cup: Five talking points as Scotland, England and Ireland qualify

Wales knew that the opening game against Scotland would likely decide their World Cup fate.

A disappointing 38-8 defeat left an uphill task to qualify for the knockout stages, and a win on Saturday over the world’s number two ranked side Canada was required.

Sean Lynn, who took over as Wales head coach before this year’s Women’s Six Nations, made seven changes to his starting XV.

Wales’ front row had average age of just 20, with back rower Branwen Metcalfe, 18, also making her Test debut from the bench.

Despite falling to a 42-0 defeat by one of the World Cup favourites, Lynn’s youthful side showed plenty of green shoots to work with moving forward.

“I am glad the Wales women showed their respect for the jersey and the effort they are willing to put in,” former Wales captain Philippa Tuttiett told BBC’s Rugby Union Weekly.

“If you bring that to Sean Lynn with his coaching prowess then he will be able to move forward with that team.”

However, Wales must first keep an eye on the emerging nations behind them, with Fiji, who are ranked four places below them in 14th, likely to offer a tough final pool game on Saturday in Exeter.

Spain, ranked 13th, suffered a 43-27 defeat by Ireland on Sunday and are another side that are showing signs of progress.

“Let’s put Spain in the Six Nations,” former England captain Maggie Alphonsi told BBC Sport.

Barcelona draw with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga after VAR outage | Football News

Rayo were furious after a VAR failure meant Lamine Yamal’s first-half penalty could not be reviewed in their 1-1 draw against the defending La Liga title holders.

Barcelona dropped their first points in La Liga this season as Rayo Vallecano fought back to secure a 1-1 draw at home to the champions in a testy encounter where a faulty Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system caused controversy.

Rayo substitute Fran Perez thrashed home a 67th-minute equaliser as he stole in unmarked at the back post from a corner after Lamine Yamal’s 40th-minute penalty had put Barca ahead on Sunday.

A malfunctioning VAR ensured the game was clouded in controversy after Pep Chavarria’s challenge on Yamal, which led to the spot kick being awarded, could not be reviewed because the system was not working at the time.

Chavarria did make contact with Yamal’s thigh, but the penalty award might have been overturned on review.

Both teams had been informed of the faulty system at kickoff, but Rayo’s vigorous protests over referee Mateo Busquets’s decision ensured the rest of the clash at Vallecas Stadium was played in a tempestuous atmosphere.

Indignant home supporters voiced their fury at every subsequent decision that went against their side.

Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia made several outstanding stops to deny Rayo a win at the end of a week in which the club from the Madrid suburbs secured a place in the Conference League group phase on their return to Europe after 24 years.

Garcia made a point-blank save to deny Andrei Ratiu in the 12th minute and, in the second half, spectacularly denied efforts from Isi Palazon and a breakaway on goal by Jorge de Frutos.

Substitute Sergio Camello could have won the game for Rayo in the last minute, but with the goal at his mercy, he miscued his shot, allowing a grateful Garcia to gather easily.

For Barca, Daniel Olmo was guilty of missing an easy goal soon after teenager Yamal’s penalty had put the visitors ahead. Olmo’s strike sailed over the top of the crossbar from close range, setting off an angry reaction from furious coach Hansi Flick.

Barcelona had won their opening two games of the season, but the dropped points mean Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are the only two clubs with a 100 percent record after three matches in La Liga. Rayo have four points from their opening matches of the campaign.

On the Rize: a road trip to Turkey’s fairytale north-east | Turkey holidays

A rainy part of the world where locals’ tea-drinking habits verge on obsessive. That may sound familiar, but a shared love of tea is where similarities between Turkey’s Rize province and the UK start and end. In fact, this corner of the country feels more like a mythical land, a fairytale mix of mist-shrouded mountains and dramatically plunging valleys cloaked in impenetrably deep, dark forests.

Despite the dramatic landscapes, international tourism has never really taken off here. Running between the eastern edge of the Black Sea and the rugged Pontic Alps, just shy of the Georgian border, it’s been a tricky spot to reach, historically (a bus journey of about 19 hours from Istanbul – though an airport opened in 2022, which cuts this to two hours).

I became intrigued by Rize when researching a book on the world’s best road trips. I spent weeks cruising the globe’s highways, country lanes and mountain passes via Google Street View. When I reached Turkey, I noticed a long green belt running along its northern coastline and discovered a land of dense tea plantations, cliff-hugging roads, roaring rivers and wooden villages.

Curious to find out more, I convinced a friend to come on a road trip to the Fırtına valley, home to some of the region’s most spectacular scenery (as well as being its most accessible area – large swathes are serious wilderness and should only be visited with a guide).

Rize is the name of both the province and its capital city, an unassuming coastal hub. We decide to prioritise our time in deep nature, so head straight for the mountains in our hire car rather than lingering in town. As we head east towards the Fırtına valley, our route is lined by the shimmering turquoise waters of the Black Sea on one side and rolling tea plantations on the other, where the steep hillsides are dotted with workers gathering leaves into wicker baskets strapped to their backs. Rize has been Turkey’s leading tea-producing region since the 1940s. It is the country’s wettest region, but rain tends to dissipate quickly during the summer months, leaving thin wisps of mist trailing across the hilltops.

After about 20 minutes, we reach the mouth of the Fırtına River. The name translates as “stormy” and its waters crash along the rocky riverbed. The further along it we drive, the more ferocious it becomes; the valley sides loom over us, their steep slopes blanketed in dense forests (apparently home to a growing population of brown bears).

After half an hour, we reach Çamlıhemşin. The town skirts the riverbanks precipitously, cradled by towering, mossy cliffs. We wander along its main street as the sun sets, passing a few tea houses, bakeries and shops selling honey and local cheese.

Dinner is at the Çamlıhemşin cafe-restaurant on the river, where we feast on chargrilled chicken skewers, white bean stew in a rich tomato sauce, and hunks of bread. With the help of Google Translate, our waiter proudly tells us that the loaf is homemade.

After dinner, a staggering series of hairpin bends leads to our accommodation: Dudi Konağı, a towering stone mansion that clings to the valleyside. Once one of the grandest private homes in the region, it was built in the early 1900s by the Tarakçıoğlu family, who made their fortunes in Russia. Today it’s a 24-room guesthouse with restored timber panelling, carved stone fireplaces and rustic wooden furnishings. We’re ushered up to our room on the third floor, where we fall asleep to the sound of a nearby stream and the soft croaking of frogs.

The next day, we head off deeper into the valley, towards the lofty, snow-capped peaks of the Kaçkar mountains. We trace the course of the river, passing thundering waterfalls hidden within corridors of beech and chestnut trees, and stone bridges that date back to the early years of the Ottoman empire.

Our first stop is Zil castle, a 14th-century fortress that rises above the thick forest canopy. Historians believe it was constructed by the empire of Trebizond, an offshoot of the Byzantine empire that thrived along the Silk Road. For centuries, Zil castle guarded a critical mountain pass that connected inland routes with ports on the Black Sea, watching over caravans carrying spices and silks between Europe and Asia. Today, it’s a miraculously preserved masterpiece of medieval engineering, with sweeping panoramic views across the valley.

As we press on, we spot a colourful new addition to the landscape: rhododendron bushes. These plants, bursting with bright purple flowers in early summer, are responsible for one of the region’s more unusual delicacies, deli bal (or “mad honey”). The nectar of this native variety of rhododendron contains a neurotoxin that slows the heart rate, is said to pack a hallucinogenic punch and has aphrodisiac properties. The honey is among the world’s most expensive. With the land too steep and rugged for regular agriculture, beekeeping is big business here.

The region is home to the Hemshin people, an ethnic minority who originated in Armenia but have been present in the Black Sea region since the eighth century. This relative isolation has helped keep its distinctive language, culture and traditions alive. One age-old custom is black hive beekeeping, which involves hoisting hives high into the branches of hornbeam trees, so they are out of the reach of greedy bears.

As we edge out of the Fırtına valley, the road turns to a rocky track and snakes upwards into the Kaçkar mountains. We head deeper into the clouds until we’re enveloped by thick mist. Our final stop, Elevit, is a small mountain hamlet, which perches prettily on a high-altitude plateau. People only live here in the summer months to tend their livestock, then descend to the towns when the snow arrives. It’s still quite early in the year and the village is eerily quiet. The mist adds to the mysterious atmosphere: shuttered wooden chalets appear ghost-like through the haze; a technicolour blanket of wildflowers has a thin, dewy sheen.

Behind the fog lie the high peaks of the Kaçkars. An extension of the Caucasus, the range extends 620 miles along Turkey’s Black Sea coast, making them more than twice as long as the Pyrenees. While it’s possible to hike here without a guide, it’s not advisable. The area isn’t properly set up for day hikers; paths through the rugged terrain aren’t marked clearly. Had we more time, we would sign ourselves up for a guided trek – offered by the likes of Montis and Two Ararat – to explore the untamed wilderness of lofty peaks, glacial lakes and mountain pastures. But with our road trip set to continue over the border into Georgia, our exploration into the Kaçkars ends in Elevit.

Much of the region has a surprisingly alpine feel. Photograph: Murat Nergiz/Alamy

We drive back to Çamlıhemşin with dusk casting an amber glow over the valley, the river below glinting like a ribbon of steel between the darkening trees. We end our day playing backgammon (or tavla) in a dimly lit, wood-panelled tea house that feels like a working men’s club. The clientele sip tea from tulip-shaped glasses as their wooden counters clack speedily across the board.

The proprietor asks us what we make of his region. “Güzel,” (beautiful) we tell him. He gives us a wide grin and nods. It’s easy to understand why this place inspires such fierce pride in those who call it home. Rize is not packaged for mass tourism, and that’s precisely what makes it worth exploring – a place that still feels wild, where ancient cultures live on, and the tea is always hot.

San Diego FC defeats LAFC to spoil Son Heung-min’s home debut

Hirving Lozano and Anders Dreyer scored, and San Diego FC spoiled the home debut of LAFC forward Son Heung-min with a 2-1 victory Sunday night.

After Dreyer got the tiebreaking goal in the 66th minute, Western Conference-leading San Diego held on against a barrage of LAFC chances to extend its unbeaten streak to six matches in MLS play.

Denis Bouanga scored in the first half for LAFC, but the French star and Son both failed to convert golden scoring chances in the final minutes of expansion San Diego’s first trip 120 miles north to BMO Stadium. CJ Dos Santos made three saves for the visitors, including a diving stop on Son in second-half injury time.

Son was given a hero’s welcome in his first match in Los Angeles, taking the field nearly four weeks after LAFC announced the landmark signing of the South Korean star following his decade at Tottenham. Son played his first three matches on the road for LAFC, scoring a goal and immediately energizing the offense while his new club went unbeaten.

The sellout crowd serenaded Son from the moment he stepped on the field for warmups in Los Angeles, which has the world’s largest Korean population outside Korea. With thousands of fans wearing his jerseys for club and country, Son repeatedly waved to those cheering him on, and he exhorted the crowd into a frenzy right before kickoff.

Bouanga put LAFC ahead in the 15th minute with a beautiful chip volley into San Diego’s net off an excellent pass from teenager David Martínez. Bouanga’s goal was his 15th of the season, all in his last 19 matches.

But Lozano answered in the 33rd minute with a strike from the middle of the box for his ninth MLS goal. The Mexican national team star celebrated by taunting the famously raucous North End supporters’ section.

Dreyer put San Diego ahead with an individual effort by the Danish star, slipping behind LAFC’s back line to collect Jeppe Tverskov’s pass and juking two defenders before firing a left-footed shot for his 14th goal.

LAFC controlled play for long stretches, but couldn’t even it.

Son hit a screamer toward the far top corner in the 45th minute, but Dos Santos made a superb leaping save.

Hugo Lloris’ long pass put Son in a one-on-one break in the 74th minute, but he couldn’t get a shot off.

Son then hit the post in the 78th minute with a shot from the top of the box.

Bouanga got alone on the keeper in the 82nd minute, but waited too long to take a shot.

Son’s hard shot in the 92nd minute was saved by a diving Dos Santos.
