THE LARGEST ice rink in the UK is opening today after receiving an ‘epic’ upgrade.
Skate Bournemouth has returned for the festive season, with the popular attraction receiving some major modifications before it launched for the winter period.

The updated rectangular rink measures up at 70 metres long – almost the same length as a Boeing 777, becoming the largest ice rink in the country.
The popular ice skating park, located in Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens, returned to business on Wednesday (November 12).
Drone images show the sheer length of the stunning ice rink, which appeared draped in white, after extensive upgrade works took place.
Located in Bournemouth city centre, the skating park will offer student nights, toddler time and sessions for more experienced skaters – as it did in previous years.
A spokesperson for Skate Bournemouth said: “Skaters and spectators alike are in for a treat, with a separate skate-hire marquee featuring its own toilets and queuing area, meaning gearing up is smooth and stress-free.”
The attraction also features a Moguls Alpine Bar, which offers a “stunning menu of festive cocktails, mulled drinks and hot chocolates”, according to their website.
Skate Bournemouth will remain open for customers until January 4, accommodating skaters through Christmas to the New Year.
Prices range between £13.50 for children and £16 for adults at the huge rink.
But while Bournemouth boasts the longest rink in the UK, punters closer to the capital looking for a similar experience benefit from a stunning ice rink that’s already opened its doors for winter.
Skate at Somerset House, in partnership with Virgin Atlantic, returned to London on Wednesday, taking over the venue’s iconic courtyard.
The rink returned as part of the venue’s 25th birthday – and is one of the capital’s standout attractions during the winter experiences.
The venue offers a range of tasty food, drinks and music from DJ’s as part of the full experience.
Virgin Atlantic, who are the organisers behind the stunning rink, are also operating exclusive sessions and a lounge-inspired Clubhouse with rink-side views
HSBC UK are also running a vintage pop-up store on-site called Shelter Boutique.
The shop will be selling a hand-picked selection of pre-loved items, with all proceeds going to Shelter charity, helping tackle homelessness during the festive period.
Entry to Skate at Somerset House ranges between £15 to £28.50 for adults, and £10 for children, plus a one-off transaction fee of £2.95.

So it’s no surprise that the town is steeped in history – Samuel even says you can “travel back in time” while strolling through.
He also calls it one of the “most beautiful places in Spain” as it has white-washed buildings with terracotta roof tiles.
Gran Tarajal is a main town with pitch black sand where locals live a slow lifestyle and there aren’t many tourists around.
There’s also a marina and lots of local restaurants where you’ll find classic dishes.

You’re pretty spoiled for choice with beaches thanks to Fuerteventura being an island, of course.
Majanicho is a small, off-the-beaten-track village known for surfing, a calm lagoon, and it even has a unique beach made of coral – often called “Popcorn Beach”.

Samuel called Majanicho an “untouched coastal area” that’s a “surfer’s paradise” thanks to its shape.
When it comes to beach day fun, look no further than Corralejo .
The lively resort has plenty of beaches including the Grandes Playas which has golden sands and bright blue waters.
Villages
There are villages scattered throughout the island, but these are the ones Samuel said needs to be on your hit list.
Ajuy on the west coast is a remote fishing village where pirates used to hide – and there are plenty of secret spots to explore like the volcanic caves.
Plus, you’ll be able to see some fantastic sunsets here.
Also on the west coast of the island is Los Molinos, a secluded village with sea caves and as Samuel points out – the only place where you can see ducks.
Tiscamanita is a farming village where Samuel revealed they make the best matured goat cheese of the island.
It’s also home to a traditional Canarian windmill.

Exploring
There’s plenty of exploring to be done around the island too, and Samuel said that Lajares, a small inland town, is “as indie as it gets” with “plenty of artisan shops”.
The town that’s popular with surfers is known for having a chilled out vibe.
Tindaya is a sacred mountain on the island for the aboriginal people of the island.
It’s a site worth seeing but visitors can only drive by or walk around a small part of the mountain.
Punta de la Entallada is an active lighthouse on the island and from there you get some incredible views – it’s also the nearest point to mainland Africa.
Samuel also recommended Jandia which has white sand beaches and it has even been used in a few films like Star Wars and Wonder Woman.
He also added that Antigua is worth a visit for its historical windmill and Cheese Museum with a guided tasting.
Another is Isla de Lobos, an island to the north of Fuerteventura – a natural park only reachable by boat with an archaeological site and incredibly clear water.

Here are some of the very best which are just a few hours from the UK.
Turiscampo, Portugal
You’ll find Turiscampo at the very bottom of the Algarve in the city of Lagos.
If you fancy visiting in November, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how warm it is still with highs of 18C.
What will draw most visitors in is the enormous swimmingpool lined with sun loungers.
If you love the beach, then this campsite is ideal as it’s seconds away from the coast.
With highs of 19C in November, you’ll still be able to enjoy frolicking on the sands and splashing about in the water.
There’s a pretty terrace restaurant with views over the Med as well as a huge slide and a shallow splash park for kids.

On the front line of the Costa Daurada and close to the Ebro Valley, just fifteen minutes from Port Aventura.

Los Escullos, Spain
If you want a break surrounded by nature then Los Escullos is for you as it’s found tucked away in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.
In the low season it’s quiet so it’s also a great spot if you fancy a less frantic atmosphere.
Activities range from the multi-sports court to the entertainment program, and there’s an outdoor pool surrounded by loungers and cosy cabanas.
There’s a focus on wellbeing so make sure to explore the gym, sauna, Jacuzzi and massage treatments.
And if you fancy taking a stroll, there are plenty of trails that run through the National Park.
When it comes to meals, the Oasis Restaurant overlooks the pool and offers guests the opportunity to try traditional Spanish cuisine or check out the pizzeria menu.

Costa do Vizir, Portugal
This campsite is on the western coast of Portugal where temperatures reach highs of 18C in November.
Called the Costa do Vizir, it’s ideal for anyone seeking a peaceful camping break by the coast.
The campsite is just 450m from Praia Grande beach, a popular watersports location.
On-site is a fine dining restaurant, and on the beach is the second restaurant which makes for great sunset views.
There’s an outdoor pool and children’s play area.
The country’s capital, Lisbon, is one hour and 30 minutes drive away where you can hop on a tram and eat a tasty Pastel de Nata.

Located in Rovaniemi, the village includes visits from Santa himself, letter writing, crafting opportunities, rides, attractions and even the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.

Strasbourg Christmas Market
Complete with its own “Singing Christmas Tree”, ‘Christkindelsmarik’ in Strasbourg is one of Europe’s oldest and most iconic Christmas markets.
Scott revealed that this festive market is for those who really love Christmas.
He said: “During the festive season, local choirs perform live French and German Christmas carols from platforms nestled within the tree’s branches.
“The local carollers sing rich Alsatian heritage songs and allow the tree to come to life as it becomes a living concert stage for passers by to enjoy and watch.”
Colmar Christmas Market
You’ll find Colmar off the edge of Strasbourg. It’s a pretty town with multi-coloured timber houses and winding streets.
The narrow cobbled streets run either side of idyllic canals, all lined with pink cottages and cosy historical taverns.
One TripAdvisor reviewer said it was a “photographer’s dream” adding: “It’s like walking into Disney movie. The whole region is! I literally gasped walking around beautiful corner after corner.”
Scott stated: “Colmar’s Christmas Market is located in the historic city centre of Colmar and includes illuminated canals and fully decorated medieval buildings. A hidden gem not to miss!”

It’s in Colmar where you can get a unique mulled wine that’s actually white, rather than the classic red, made from Vin Chaud.
Rüdesheim ‘Christmas Market of Nations’
This festive market is based in the wine and brandy making German town of Rüdesheim.
Scott said: “This Christmas Market of Nations is known for selling over 20 different countries local cuisines across six continents from Hungarian Lángos to Spanish Paella.”
He added that it’s perfect for those who are indecisive when it comes to different foods.
Those who love a festive tipple will love Rüdesheim Coffee, a traditional hot drink made with locally distilled brandy, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate – according to Scott it’s “a must-try”.

Cologne Christmas Market
Scott’s number one must-visit which should be at the top of everyone’s festive list this year is the Cologne Christmas Market.
First and foremost, Cologne packs a punch when it comes to variety and choice.
Scott said: “Brits can spend a whole week in the city spending each day at one of seven different Christmas markets, from the famous ‘Weihenactsmarkts am Kolner Dom’ to the special Market of Angels.”
When it comes to the main event, don’t miss the ‘Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom’, which has a “stunningly beautiful sky of fairy lights”.
For those looking for a lesser-known Christmas market, Cologne’s Harbour Christmas Market, sells maritime themed memorabilia and fresh festive fish.
Scott encouraged those who wanted a more alternative experience in the city to check out ‘Markt der Engel’ or ‘Market of Angels’ Christmas market on Neumarkt.
The festive market is filled with real-life golden angels who walk freely around the market, and of course there are places where you can pick up a warm mulled wine.
IT’S that time of year again where the festive markets open their doors with thrilling rides and magical experiences – and the best one in the UK will open in a matter of days.
Winter Wonderland in London – which was recently named the UK’s best Christmas market – will launch on November 14 and run for six weeks until January 1.
Families can also uncover hidden treasures and get Santa’s autograph.

Whilst the Magical Ice Kingdom is nothing new, it will have a new theme this year – ‘A Mystical, Mythical Fantasy World’.
Visitors will be able to adventure through the Four Realms of Earth, Fire, Air and Water, which will all be made from 500 tonnes of snow and ice by sculptors from the UK and Belgium.
The Magical Ice Kingdom is rather chilly at -10C and it is one of Europe‘s largest ice attractions.
New Après-Ski Party Resort
Over in the much-loved Bavarian Village – where there is usually live music, traditional German food and mulled wine – there will be a new Apres-Ski themed village.
Here visitors will be able to grab a festive-themed drink, bratwursts and enjoy live DJ sets.
The iconic Luminarie light arches were introduced to Winter Wonderland back in 2015, but this year will feature a new extension with an additional 50,260 LED bulbs.
It will also feature a market selling unique and traditional festive gifts.
New Zippos Christmas Circus show
Zippos Christmas Circus will be returning with a new show featuring acrobats, trapeze performers and funny characters.
New Cirque Berserk show
This year the award-winning Cirque Berserk will return with their “most thrilling exclusive show yet” called Ignite.
It will include a number of daredevil performers, including motorbike stunts and fire acts.
The show lasts 45 minutes and costs from £12.50 per adult and £9.50 per child.
From 5pm each day, this VR-supported ride is plunged into a horror edition, with special effects, zombies, man-eating plants and spiders.
It costs £9 per person, or £12 per person for fast-track.
New packages
In addition to the new attractions, Winter Wonderland also has a number of new packages available for visitors.

Drayton Manor in Tamworth has announced all of its major rides will remain open throughout the festive period for the very first time.
Throughout December weekends, Christmas week and Twixmas (the period between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day), Drayton Manor will operate its major rides and attractions.
In previous years, it’s only been a selection of rides in Thomas Land that have been open rather than the bigger coasters.
This year rides that will stay open include Gold Rush, a rollercoaster in the new Wild West area, The Wave and Maelstrom.
There will also be plenty of Christmas experiences between November 22 and December 31.
For the festive season, Drayton Manor has launched its new Elves Behavin’ Badly | Elftoria experience.
Here there’s a Christmas Tree Maze, Snowball Fight Arena, Live Pranking Workshop and Show, Elf Meet and Greet, and elf slide.
There’s festive food and drink too like a pink peppermint milkshake, roast potatoes topped with hot gravy and bacon bits, plus the Christmas classic, pigs in blankets.

Plus, at the end of the day, there will be a new festive show that’s the largest of its kind in the UK – which is included in the price of a park ticket.
Called ‘Drayton Manor’s Christmas Miracle’, it transforms the onsite lake into a stunning visual spectacle.
The new show features a 30-metre water screen, with more than 65 choreographed water jets, dramatic fire effects, vibrant lighting and festive animations.
The awards were organised by ThemeParks-UK.com, and winners were announced after a series of votes made by 330,000 members of British public along with scores from expert judges.

There were 22 categories including Best New Attraction, Best Theme Park for Families, for Toddlers and for Thrills, the Best Seaside Park and Theme Park of the Year.
Best Value Theme Park wasn’t the only award Drayton Manor won, it also came in second place for Best (Large) Theme Park for Families, and for Best Theme Park for Toddlers.
Drayton Manor came in first place for Best New Accessibility Initiative, and third for Best Use of IP in an Attraction.
It also came second for its 75th Anniversary Fireworks which won Best New Event.
Park entry tickets are £25 for visitors aged between four and 66. Anyone over the age of 66 can grab a ticket for £19.90.
The festive experiences can be bought on top of the park fee. The Elves Behavin’ Badly l Elftoria experience starts from £20.
The Enchanted Santa’s Grotto costs £10 to enter. The Twinkle Express and Cinderella Pantomime are £5 each.
If you’ve got a Tesco Clubcard, you can double up your Clubcard vouchers and use them to pay for entrance on the gate.
You can’t book in advance online or use the vouchers towards car parking or season passes though, so it’s worth comparing to some of the other offers out there to see which is best for your family.
Blue Light Card
Using a discount scheme like Blue Light Card for public sector workers or Kids Pass can offer savings all year round and also access to special member days, when the park is not open to the public and parking is included in the entry price.
The Blue Light Card member day at Drayton Manor in March offered tickets for £26 per person, with toddlers aged 2 and 3 costing £15 and babies under 2 free.
Black Friday Offers
It’s worth keeping an eye out over Black Friday to see what offers pop up – last November, you could buy four tickets for £75 and they were valid until the end of May this year, which covered Easter and half-term holidays.

The beach is the sunniest in Europe
The sunniest beach in Europe during winter has been crowned, and it’s surprisingly cheap to get there.
Playa de Maspalomas in Spain has topped the chart, soaking up an average of just over 10 hours of sunshine a day – perfect to escape the winter blues. By some measures, the vast beach sprawls for 7.5miles along the coastline.
The golden-sanded beach is best known for its spectacular dunes, which form the protected Maspalomas Natural Dune Reserve. People out walking, surfers and nudists mingle freely on a beach, which also has quiet, isolated areas for nude bathing.
It is home to the iconic Maspalomas Lighthouse. Built in 1861, it was once a vital guide for steamboats navigating routes between Europe, Africa, and America. Today, the lighthouse marks the beginning of a vibrant seaside promenade.

A little further from the beach is the Maspalomas Palm Tree Plantation, a protected natural space providing a resting spot for birds migrating from Europe to Africa. Wandering through its palm-lined paths offers a breath of fresh air after a day in the sun.

It was named the Continent’s sunniest winter beach by Saga, which has compiled a list of the beaches that enjoy the most hours of sunshine during the winter months.
Playa de Maspalomas, which sits on the south of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, isn’t just sunny during the winter. It’s hot as well. The island has hit 24C today and is forecast to stay at that level for the rest of the week.
The beach is well loved on TripAdvisor, where it has received thousands of positive reviews. One person wrote: “Enjoyable especially in the early morning and at sunset, when the sun seems to play with the ocean waves and golden sand dunes giving unique and always new views.”
Another added: “One of the most beautiful beaches in Gran Canaria. Super extensive and the dune landscape is unique. The beach as well as the water are always super clean. We love coming here.”
If the idea of swapping the soggy UK for a spell on a sunny beach appeals, then the good news is that Gran Canaria is not too far or too expensive a flight away. The cheapest direct flight this week is £24, with Ryanair from Edinburgh Airport. Later in the month, a one-way fare can be yours for £13.
There are also direct flights this month from the following airports: Bristol, Manchester, Bournemouth, Belfast, Newcastle, Liverpool, Nottingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Cardiff and Exeter.

Jerry Rebbeck, a local expert at Wheelwrights Holiday Cottages, said: “It’s like something out of a HallmarkChristmas movie.”
This small village becomes the ultimate festive spot thanks to its Christmas fair, which takes place between December 6 and 7.
Jerry said: “The fair takes place across one weekend every year, taking over the centre of the village with stalls, full of local produce, food and drink.
“This tiny village of around 500 people comes alive, with street performers, carol singing and even a lantern parade.
“It’s a fabulous thing to visit and be a part of.”
But it isn’t just the Christmas fair that is worth heading to in the village.
Hawkshead is also home to a number of businesses with vintage shop fronts, which then in the lead up to Christmas create festive window displays.
Jerry shared: “Add that to the cobbled streets, and the village that look like they’re straight out of a Christmas fairytale.”
For those with a sweet tooth, head to the Chocolate Factory Hawkshead – which is a shop and cafe that hosts Christmas chocolate making workshops.
“It’s a great place to source stocking fillers, and makes for a great rainy day festive activity for families,” said Jerry.
The village also features a pretty church called St. Michael’s and All Angels.
It was built in around 1300 on the site of a Norse Chapel and what visitors see today mostly dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
Jerry said: “The view of the village from the 12th century churchyard is beautiful, with an easy walk back down to get a hot chocolate from quaint cafes such as The Minstrels Gallery Tea Room, or a glass of mulled wine in pubs such as The Red Lion Inn.”
Just a seven minute drive away or a 55 minute walk, visitors can also explore Hill Top Beatrix Potter House, which is a National Trust property.
The house is believed to be the place that inspired a lot of Beatrix Potter’s stories, and it has a cottage-garden, small cafe and shop and a second hand book-nook.
It costs £18.70 per person to visit, but will be closed from November 17 for the winter season.
Visitors can choose to stay in Hawkshead or in the surrounding areas.
Jerry shared: “In the surrounding area, only a mile away you can find holiday cottages in Outgate, as well as Ambleside, around five miles away.”

The small village also just 22 minutes from Lake Windermere, which is where the closest train station can be found and it is just a 30 minute drive from Grasmere.
If you also want to tie in a nearby city, then Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds are all between one hour and 55 minutes and two hours and 22 minutes away.
For a slightly smaller city, head to Lancaster, which is just an hour away.
There are a number of quaint villages that are pretty to visit around the festive period.

A ‘magical’ tidal pool that’s popular with wild swimmers has been praised as the ‘perfect’ spot for a winter swim. Found in Cornwall, the ‘stunning’ pool could be especially attractive to people who like to swim year-round, but who don’t always get the chance due to rough seas.
While it’s always important to follow water safety guidelines, swimming in the winter can be more dangerous due to unpredictable conditions and stronger currents. Bude Sea Pool often goes viral on social media and is highly rated by TripAdvisor reviewers. It’s also free to visit.
Friends of Bude Sea Pool, the charity that maintains the pool, explains: “Bude Sea Pool is a semi-natural tidal pool and is a safe haven for wild swimming on the edges of the Atlantic Ocean. There is no cost, no booking nor any other imposed restriction. Bude Sea Pool is for everyone to enjoy for free.”
The sea pool is open throughout the year, and the temperature typically ranges between 11°C and 18°C. The website advises unseasoned swimmers to consider wearing a wetsuit. It is also recommended to always swim at low tide.
On TripAdvisor, the tidal pool has an average rating of 4.7 out of five, and it earned a 2025 Travellers’ Choice Award. The description for the attraction reads: “Bude Sea Pool is a part-natural, part man-made tidal pool on Summerleaze Beach in the popular seaside town of Bude, North Cornwall.
“Built in the 1930s under the cliffs, it provides a safe swimming area away from the dangerous Atlantic currents. Measuring approximately 91m by 45m, the pool is naturally replenished by the Atlantic Ocean at high tide.”
One previous visitor said: “Bude sea pool is my favourite place in the world. I have visited it many times, in all months and seasons. It is never the same, but always magical and I am so happy that it continues to be free for everyone to enjoy. Wonderful place.”
Another visitor wrote: “A lovely spot. Perfect, safe place for a winter swim. A lovely spot.
“Perfect, safe place for a winter swim when the sea is rough. An amazing facility. Volunteer run and charity so pop in the ‘friends of’ shop for some swim-supplies or gifts to show support. Parking & toilets nearby.”
Someone else praised: “Awesome! What a stunning place for a swim! The Bude sea pool is a wonderful thing. It is backed by cliffs creating stunning views while you can swim in calm but fresh sea water. I recommend a wetsuit in winter unless you’re seriously hardy!

MONDAY night is DJ night at Hotel Ibiza and the bar/lounge area is filled with ambient house tunes as pink neon lights flash in time with the beat.

We’re in Les Deux Alpes in France, one of the most snow-sure ski resorts in Europe, and the terrace outside looks across to the glistening peaks of the Parc National des Ecrins.
It’s the week before Christmas and a group of us have brought our teenagers for some festive fun on the slopes.
They’re not yet old enough to venture out alone into the resort’s bars and clubs, but they’re still keen to do their own thing so the entertainment here is ticking all the teen boxes.
While we sit at the bar, chatting with barman Costas as he expertly mixes our pre-dinner drinks, the kids have gone downstairs again for another game of air hockey.
The huge basement games room, which also has ping-pong, table football, arcade games and a dozen or so sofas to laze on, is proving to be a big hit.
But it’s dinner time and I know the restaurant buffet will easily tempt away Freddie, our 15-year-old, because it is serving lasagne — his favourite dish — among a host of other options.
Like most teenage boys, Freddie is a big eater and as I watch him tuck into his third portion I feel relieved that we went for the all-inclusive option.
Feeding a growing lad is expensive at the best of times but particularly so in a ski resort.
Luckily, the Hotel Ibiza offers a super deal throughout the winter season, with kids under 18 staying free when sharing a room with their parents at the same board.
You can go for B&B or half- board, but families usually make the most of the kids-go-free offer and splash out on all-inclusive.
It makes sense, especially when you factor in the drinks.
Soft drinks, wine and beer with meals, and a selection of spirits for pre- and post-dinner drinks are part of the deal, and Costas keeps them coming, along with bowls of peanuts and tortilla chips, until 10pm.
After that, you can carry on drinking at your own expense, but you’ll probably want to be tucked up in bed by then, exhausted by a day’s activity in the mountain air.

It was early in the season but already the snow conditions were good.
The sun was shining (Les Deux Alpes boasts above-average sunshine too) and with heavy snow and white-outs forecast for later in the week, we were making the most of the blue skies.
We loved the Jandri Express, the resort’s sparkling new state-of-the-art cable car that whizzes you up to 3,200m in just 17 minutes, half the time the old gondola took.
It takes up to 32 people at a time — 24 seated and eight standing — and gives you plenty of time to adjust boots or have a snack.
One morning we joined First Tracks, where you accompany the Ski Patrollers, who prepare the slopes daily, spending two hours learning about what is involved.
It costs €22 (£19.40) per person, including breakfast at La Toura Restaurant, and can be booked through the tourist office.
Best of all, it means you get to go up before the lifts open to the public and can be the first to ski down.
With freshly-groomed slopes to ourselves, it’s when we got our best photos.
We also tried yoonering — a bit like sledging but on a seat 20cm above the ground, with your legs stretched out in front to act as brakes, gliding down and leaning left or right to turn. It was easy to get the hang of it and went surprisingly fast.
We all loved it.
‘QUIRKY AND FUN’
On a few evenings we stopped off for a beer or a vin chaud at one of the bars near the bottom of the Jandri, but most nights we got straight on the free shuttle bus for the five-minute hop home and did our après ski back at the hotel bar/lounge, enticed by the all- inclusive drinks and the chilled out, family-friendly vibe.
The hotel’s decor somehow manages to make it cosy and cool at the same time.
There’s a retro, musical theme, with prints of rock and pop legends along the corridors and coffee tables in the lounge, which double up as Monopoly boards or glass-topped exhibits of Barbies and Action Men.
It’s quirky and fun.
Our room, one of 60, was a two-bed family one, with balcony and bath.
Each room comes with bath robes and slippers for the walk down to the basement spa, with its sauna, steam room and indoor heated pool all free for guests.
The food was excellent for a three-star hotel, particularly the evening meals, when you could take a bowl and help yourself from the salad or soup bar, followed by an array of hot meat, fish and veggie dishes, plus a surprising amount of veggie sides, which is often lacking in ski hotels.
The desserts were so generous that even Freddie agreed to share.
After dinner we’d sink into the comfy lounge sofas en famille and play cards or games.
One night after dinner, two of the younger children played Christmas songs on the grand piano and we all joined in — even the teens!
With only a few more years before they’ll probably be off skiing with their mates, it was a moment to be cherished.

The ranking was formed by asking 12,621 international travellers from 108 countries, with participants deciding on their top ‘fairytale Christmas’ spot from 103 markets across Europe.
Spread across the city of Asti and the towns of Govone and San Damiano d’Asti, Il Magico Paese di Natale – which translates to The Magical Christmas Village – features a number of different events and activities.

Jet2 is set to launch three new routes to a city break destination that’s famous for its medieval old town and Christmas market.
Flights from Edinburgh to Tallinn will run from November 27, with flights from Manchester and Birmingham launching on November 28. These seasonal flights come just in time to explore Tallinn when it’s often at its most beautiful, with frozen, snowy weather typical in the run up to Christmas. There are flights this December for just £30.
Jet2 describes Tallinn as looking like a “medieval fairytale”. The old town is UNESCO-listed, and has historic squares, cobbled streets, and colourful architecture. It’s the kind of place where you could easily spend the day wandering around, looking at the perfectly-preserved old buildings and stopping for a strong black coffee and a sweet pirukad pastry.
In the winter months, the old town is particularly charming, decked out in Christmas lights and often with a sprinkling of snow on the ground. The Christmas Market opens on November 21, and runs until December 28, with wooden stalls selling traditional crafts, fairground rides, and a land train decked out in fairy lights to take you round the town.
At the heart of the square is, what locals claim is Europe’s first Christmas tree. The area has been home to a Christmas tree since 1441, long before other nations took on the tradition of decorating trees in their homes. Once you’ve wandered around the square, try some traditional Christmas foods such as gingerbread or Estonian favourites like black pudding and cabbage. A spicy sausage called verivorst is also a very popular treat this time of year.
This walkable city boasts numerous incredible landmarks in its center. Visit the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a distinctive Eastern Orthodox church featuring onion domes. Or explore the imposing Toompea Castle, a medieval structure now used by Estonia’s parliament. The original castle was built by the Danish in the 13th Century, but parts were destroyed and rebuilt in the Middle Ages, while another newer wing features 18th-century baroque elements.
Visit Kadriorg Palace, which sits within vast areas of parkland. Founded by Russian Tsar Peter I in 1718, this spectacular baroque palace was modelled on Versailles. It’s home to the Kadriorg Art Museum, which has an impressive array of European and Russian art from the 16th to 20th centuries, while the surrounding Kadriorg Park looks beautiful in winter, with fountains and snow-covered greenery. At the edge of the park, you can even enjoy views across the Baltic Sea.
The old town offers a variety of hotels, hostels, and apartments to choose from. The four-star Nunne Boutique Hotel has excellent reviews and old-world charm. Twin rooms start at just £70 a night for two sharing, and for €10 per person you can enjoy the hotel’s spa, which features a massage pool and saunas. There’s even a kids’ room with toys and games to keep small visitors entertained.
The Merchants House Hotel is full of character and offers 36 rooms and suites just steps from the old town’s top attractions. This unique hotel is made up of historic, converted homes set around a courtyard, and offers economy double rooms for just £66 a night for two sharing.

Instead, inside is an emporium of artifacts and curiosities.
The inn is often dubbed the ‘most unusual pub’ in Britain thanks to being full of random objects, and even ghostly sightings of “a burly sea captain, the flamboyant cavalier Samuel, and a provocative serving wench in a mop cap”, according to the inn’s website.
From the outside, visitors are greeted by a nod to the ‘old lady who lived in a shoe’ fairytale, as part of the front of the building forms a giant black boot.
Then as you enter inside, the walls, floors and ceilings have been formed of natural wood and stone from the area.
And in every nook and cranny there is something interesting, from animal figurines to an Egyptian-style sarcophagus.
There is even a £150 reward poster for the capture of “two highwaymen known to be causing grief among Travellers in these Parts by Robbery of great violence”.
The poster also states: “Render this countryside free from such fiendish rogues.”
Visitors can venture down a once secret passage way as well, which leads them to the Rita Jone’s Locker Bar – it features a gothic door from an old whaling boat named the Diana, which was built in the mid 18th century.
The bar essentially looks like the boughs of a grand ship with wheels also hanging from the ceiling.
In another area, visitors will find the Hideaway, which is more intimate.
In the Coach Cabin Lounge, there are several horse-related items such as bridles and harnesses from the days horse-drawn carriages were used.
Then in Witchy Corner, guests will find a wishing bottle and tarot decorations.
Somewhere in the inn is even a 1.8 metre tall Minotaur, named Asterion.
Much of the menu is vegan and vegetarian, but there are some meat and fish options too.
For example, you could grab pie of the day with chips for £18 or a traditional Devonshire pasty and chips for £18 also.
Desserts include apple pie or Devil’s Chocolate Cake for £8.75 each.

Then in the 17th century it was renamed to the Golden Fleece, before Plymouth Breweries then renamed it the New Inn.
According to one visitor, the inn provides “an absolutely surreal experience, like stepping into a tardis whilst dining on an old ship all at once”.
For those wanting to enjoy the quirky pub for longer, you can stay in Cobweb Hall – a cottage just opposite the inn.
Inside, there are two bedrooms with four poster beds and each even has its own spiral staircase and Victorian-style bathroom.
The cottage also then has an open plan dining area and living room, as well as a kitchen.
It costs from £198 per night for both rooms, and there is a minimum stay of three nights.

It is just a six minute drive or 45 minute walk from Meldon Reservoir, which is a great spot for walking around a giant dam.
You can also see Meldon Viaduct just a short walk from the reservoir as well.
Drive slightly past Meldon and you will reach the town of Okehampton, where there are a number of shops, the Museum of Dartmoor Life and Okehampton Castle.

So we’ve rounded up some of the free events across the UK you can head to this Christmas, from pop-up performances to lantern parades.
Santa’s Grottoes and Meet & Greets
In Leeds, at Kirkgate Market, families get the chance to meet Santa for free on December 6, 13, 20, 22 and 23 between 12pm and 3pm.
At the Cadbury House Christmas Fayre on December 3, families can meet Santa in his grotto between 5pm and 7pm.
At Willow Brook Centre in Bradley Stoke, near Bristol, families can head to a Christmas Jamboree for free on November 28.
The event will have a Santa meet and greet, as well as a free bouncy castle, Rodeo Rudolf, obstacle course, slide and bungee run.
Visitors will also be able to meet the Grinch, and Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked.

Over the Christmas period, visitors can share hugs and high fives every day at either 1pm or 2:30pm, with Santa Hamley Bear outside the Regent Street store in London.
Light trails
South Bank Winter Light Trail in London features numerous artworks by different artists that glow in the dark night.
The event takes place from November 6 to January 18, 2026.
In Liverpool, you could head to the Royal Albert Dock which features giant light-up figurines and a fairytale carousel.
Over in Sheffield, Light Up Sheffield features three of the city’s most iconic landmarks lit up – Sheffield Cathedral, Sheffield Central Library and Pounds Park.
The event will take place across 10 nights from December 5 to 14.

Light Up Wakefield will take place in Wakefield city centre from November 21 to 23.
On November 21, visitors can head to the Cathedral Precinct to enjoy live music and entertainment before the switch on event at 5:30pm.
Just after Christmas is Christmas Dubs in Clifton Village, near Bristol.
Taking place on December 26, visitors can see a number of Volkswagens light up Clifton Village, as they are decked out in lights.
In Torquay in Devon, visitors can head out on the Bay of Lights illuminated trail from November 28 to January 2, 2026.

Across the event, Torquay waterfront will become illuminated with a light trail stretching 1.5 miles.
In Devon, Lanterns, Lights and Luminations in Brixham will take place from November 21 to 22.
The popular event features a lantern parade, firework display, live music, street entertainment and a market.
Markets
A lot of markets across the UK are free to enter, but once inside you usually do spend money – whether that be on food and drink or attractions.
However, if you take some snacks with you and skip the attractions you can get into the festive spirit without spending a penny.
For example, you could head to one of Liverpool’s most loved buildings, the Bombed Out Church, for their weekend Makers Market.
From 10am to 4pm on various dates throughout November and December, you can wander around stalls selling fresh bakes and pretty creations.

In London, you could head to the Chelsea Winter Village where there is street food, artisan markets, firepits, traditional fairground rides, and an aprés ski bar.
The event is set within the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, so even if you don’t want to spend any money, it is a pretty market to see and take in the free choir performances.
Festive treasure hunts and other trails
In London, visitors can head off on the Snowman Trail, which is a free outdoor sculpture trail inspired by Raymond Brigg’s The Snowman.
Each sculpture has been decorated by artists and then place close to the city’s landmarks.

Light switch ons
Up and down the country there are thousands of Christmas light switch-ons taking place in November and December – and most of which are free to attend.
This includes the Christmas Light Switch On in Oldham, just outside Manchester.
Taking place on November 15, the event will feature the turning on of the Christmas lights, a visit from Santa, as well as Bluey and Bingo from the hit TV show and fireworks.
For a slightly different ‘switch on’ event, head to Tavistock in Devon on December 5, for a Victorian Christmas lights switch on, with people in Dickensian costumes and vintage entertainment.
In Richmond, the Christmas lights will be switched on, on November 27 and visitors can expect entertainment with the Wickedly Witches, Candy Cane Stilt Walkers and Giant Nutcracker.

Store events
Ikea stores across the country also offer a number of free events so it is worth checking out the events page for your local store.
For example, at Ikea Greenwich children can write a letter to Santa and post it in a special post box between November 10 and December 23.
At Ikea Southampton, families can even have breakfast with Santa if they are an Ikea family member – which is free to sign up to.
The same goes for Hamleys with events at the Regent Street store including Box of Christmas Mischief, a festive game show (November 6 to December 24) and Twinkle Jingle Town Parade where Hamleys elves dance their way through the store (November 6 to December 5).

If your kids love to read or you want them to explore more stories, Waterstones offers loads of events up and down the country, including regular free storytelling sessions.
Over the festive period, there are even more events such as Epsom Christmas Evening with local authors and illustrators and late night Christmas shopping nights, with free mince pies and mulled wine.
Other events
Inside Sheffield Cathedral, visitors can explore 40 Christmas trees decorated by different local charities.
A similar event will also take place at Selby Abbey – the Christmas Tree Festival, which will take place from November 28 to January 5, 2026, will feature 30 trees decorated by locals.
On November 21, when Wakefield’s Christmas lights are switched on, there will be a lantern parade through the city at 6pm.

At Windmill Hill City Farm, near Bristol – a free family farm attraction with a play area and animals – the cafe will be hosting free screenings of much-loved children’s films every weekday from 3:45pm.
In Devon, Candlelit Dartmouth is from November 28 to 30.
Visitors can see a procession of hundreds of handmade paper lanterns through the town as well as Father Christmas’ boat gliding across the River Dart.
For fans of Charles Dickens, the UK is home to some Victorian and Dickensian-themed events including a Victorian evening in Newton Abbot, Devon on December 3.
The high street will be transformed into a Dickensian Christmas Shopping scene with performers and a chance to meet Santa.

The most obvious area of need for next year’s Dodgers will be in the outfield.
Andy Pages will be back, trying to build upon his 27-homer campaign in 2025. Teoscar Hernández will enter the second of his three-year contract, trying to rebound from his injury-plagued struggles this past summer.
But the third spot remains wide open, with Michael Conforto hitting free agency after his dismal performance on a one-year, $17 million deal this past year, and Alex Call having been used in more of a depth role after his arrival of this year’s trade deadline.
Internally, the Dodgers don’t have an immediate plug-and-play option, as top prospects Josue De Paula, Zyhir Hope, Eduardo Quintero and Mike Sirota remain a ways away from the majors.
Thus, don’t be surprised to see the Dodgers linked with big names on either the free-agent or trade market this winter, starting with top free-agent prize Kyle Tucker.
Since the summer, industry speculation has swirled about the Dodgers’ expected pursuit of Tucker this offseason. The four-time All-Star did not finish 2025 well while nursing a couple injuries, but remains one of the premier left-handed bats in the sport, and could command upward of $400-$500 million on a long-term deal — a hefty price tag, but certainly not one beyond the Dodgers’ capabilities.
Free agency will include other notable outfield options. Cody Bellinger is hitting the open market, though a reunion with the Dodgers has always seemed like a long shot. Harrison Bader and Trent Grisham could provide more glove-first alternatives, and have been linked with the Dodgers in the past.
Then there are potential trade candidates, from left fielder Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians to utilityman Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals, also players the Dodgers have inquired about in the past.
The Dodgers could construct their 2026 roster in other ways, thanks to the versatility Tommy Edman provides in center field. But another outfield addition remains their most logical priority this winter. And there will be no shortage of possibilities.
The popular Winter Fayre included food and drink stalls as well as a Santa’s grotto, plus children’s workshops and carol singers.
There were also winter night events for adults and live music which were deemed popular.
But, last year’s event was hit with a series of unfortunate events when it was forced to close due to the arrival of Storm Darragh.
Sadly, on opening day, the fair had to be evacuated due to high winds and a tent poll collapsing in a marquee.
Luckily it was reported that no-one was badly injured due to the incident and the team were quick to respond and make sure the marquee was cleared.
However, the fair’s final weekend also had to be cancelled due to more bad weather.
The Winter Fayre came after Brighton was left without a Christmas market back in 2023 when it was run under different organisers.
E3 Events who organised the 2022 event was forced to end their deal earlier due to Covid, rising costs and supply chain problems.
Brighton and Hove City Council then faced a race against time to find a commercial partner able to chip in around £70,000.
Sadly, they were unable to find anyone in 2023 and the fair didn’t go ahead then either.
Speaking of this year’s event, Councillor Birgit Miller, cabinet member for culture, heritage and tourism at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “As always there will be plenty of festive events taking place across the city but, unfortunately, following the decision by the private operators of the Brighton Winter Fayre to take a break this year, there is unlikely to be a market-style event.
“This was a privately venture, not a council event, and the reality is nobody suitable has come forward offering to run a similar event in its place.”
