Making their way through the mythical woods of Trollskogen, they look in wonder.
The only things that stop them begging to return immediately to the top of the run are a log cabin serving hot chocolate near an open fire — and an open-air theatre with a dance show featuring the resort’s mascot, Snowman Valle.
Aside from it being wonderfully child-friendly, one of the best things about Salen is how quickly you can get there.
The resort, in west-central Sweden, near the Norwegian border, is just a two-hour flight from the UK then a ten-minute transfer.
Within an hour of landing at the airport, we had dumped our bags, got completely kitted out — including with ski pass, part of our deal from operator Sunweb — and were gliding down the pistes.
All of this was made even easier by our 4H “ski in and ski out” SkiStar Lodge apartment hotel, which has everything you could wish for within a short walk, from ski school, ski rental and sledging hill, to luxury spa, restaurants, playroom, creche and supermarket.
Salen is generally suited more to beginner and intermediate skiiers. But with 101 runs, including some nice off-piste, back-country routes, and a 45-degree black run called The Wall, there is enough to keep even the most advanced occupied.
If you are looking for an alternative to downhill skiing or boarding, the area also offers dog-sled rides, Ski-Doo snowmobile trails, and superb cross-country skiing.
After a tiring day on the mountain you can simply slide back to the hotel — which has a vast storage room for all your gear — and head to the bar for authentic Swedish apres ski.
Yes, that means Abba songs, as well as lots of sing-along tunes for the kids — while they energise on their slush puppies with marshmallows, and the adults relax with a beer and bowls of hot, salty chips.
Another great way to unwind after all that exertion on the mountain is the on-site Frost Spa, where you can look at the ski slopes from a steaming outdoor pool, relax in two tingling-hot Jacuzzis, melt away in the sauna and steam rooms, and get a Swedish massage — before a drink at the bar.
Salen also comprises the busier Lindvallen ski area — 20 minutes away on the free bus — where you can grab a burger and chips in the world’s one and only ski-thru McDonald’s.

Lindvallen also has a ten-pin bowling alley, arcade and the SkiStar Experium fun pool with surf simulator and two exciting waterslides for the kids to go wild in.
At day’s end, back at the hotel, the children can also enjoy free table tennis, pool and shuffleboard until they are ready to drop.
And when they are finally tucked up in bed, adults can settle down in front of the apartments’ giant TVs and watch Frozen or listen to Abba songs.
Just Gimme, gimme, gimme another Swedish ski holiday.

Beaulieu Palace has been described by visitors as ‘fabulous’
A picturesque spot on the fringes of the New Forest has been crowned one of the top “prettiest villages for a cosy winter getaway”. Beaulieu, a “quintessential English village” in Hampshire, was bestowed this honour by National Rail, who described it as an “absolute gem”.
The village is lauded for its array of attractions, including a magnificent palace and motor museum, and a delightful river.
Beaulieu Palace is recognised as one of the UK’s ten ‘Treasure Houses’, marking it as an “architectural masterpiece” surrounded by “beautiful parklands and gardens”. The house, which has been the Montagu family residence since 1538, overlooks the Beaulieu River millpond. It’s hailed as a “fine example of a Victorian country house”, adorned with family heirlooms, portraits and memorabilia.
One visitor shared their experience on TripAdvisor: “Fabulous and interesting especially when decorated for Christmas. Plenty to see and do, very worthwhile visit.”, reports the Express.
Another enthused: “Really excellent house full of historical memorabilia and family links to the owners and their forbears. Everything well displayed and the staff on hand helped bring things to life.”
A third reviewer posted: “Beaulieu Palace is maintained in splendid condition, with well-informed and costumed staff to explain how the house operated in yesteryear and exhibits from the generations who lived there bringing each room to life.”
At Beaulieu, guests can purchase a single ticket granting entry to both the Palace and the National Motor Museum. The museum boasts “one of the finest collections of cars, motorcycles and motoring memorabilia in the world“.
Beaulieu National Motor Museum holds a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, with one visitor commenting: “What a glorious place! Absolutely brilliant collection of cars in lovely grounds. My children (10 year old car enthusiast and a 3 year old) were kept entertained all day.”
Close by, situated along the banks of the Beaulieu River, lies the 18th century shipbuilding settlement of Buckler’s Hard, renowned for constructing warships for Nelson’s Navy.
Guests can explore the museum which recounts the tales of the vessels and the village’s inhabitants, or stroll down the main street to observe boats sailing on the waterway.
There’s also a picturesque, two-mile walking trail to discover, and tourists can embark on a cruise along Beaulieu River. One holidaymaker remarked: “A smashing place overlooking the river. Plenty of quaint old cottages from its shipbuilding past to walk around. And we also had a delightful trip on the boat down the river.” Another described it as like “stepping back in time”.

From November 15 until December 20, the Northern Belle, is going all out for Christmas.
One of the experiences is for the ‘Christmas Lunch’ where guests are welcomed in style as a red carpet is laid across the platform.
Onboard there’s welcome Champagne and tasty canapés, once guests are settled into a comfortable armchair, they will be served a seven-course festive feast.
The sample menu includes a Scottish salmon roulade starter, roasted white onion potage and a turkey dinner.
There’s a choice of three desserts; spiced apple and cranberry tart, dark chocolate and hazelnut delice, and a mandarin and gingerbread panna cotta.
To finish off the meal will be a seasonal dessert, cheeseboard and glass of Port.
Throughout the meal, live musicians will play festive tunes, and there’s even an onboard conjuror to entertain.
After the meal, passengers can relax with a Fortnum & Mason cup of tea and petite fours.

The Northern Belle is heading all over the country for the festive treat, and is heading to cities like Newcastle and York.

The journey involves the same cocktail and three-course brunch offering as the Edinburgh exploration and then free time will be exploring York and the markets.

Each year it glows with over 22,000 lights over the festive period and is adorned with 80 Christmas trees.
This isn’t the most Christmas trees the pub has boasted, though – back in 2019 the pub featured 105 trees, which were dedicated to the NHS.
And if you head there on November 13 at 6pm you can watch the lights get switched on.
During the event, guests can grab some mulled wine and mince pies.
The pub’s Christmas menu includes lots of Thai dishes such as Jungle Curry for £14, which features coconut milk and vegetables cooked in Thai herbs.
Alternatively, you can grab some chicken wings for £7.50.
For dessert, a classic apple pie will set you back just £5.25.
When it comes to having a tipple, you can expect everything a normal Fuller’s pub would have, including craft lager and seasonal ales.
During the period the pub’s tables are first-come, first-served and the restaurant is walk-in only.
The pub was built back in 1750, making it one of the older pubs in London.
Plus, the pub has even had some notable visitors, including Winston Churchill‘s grandparents – which ultimately led to the pub being called what it is today.
And inside guests can look up to the ceiling which is full of items from the world wars and lots of garlands.
On the walls there are evening newspapers, such as an old copy of the Daily Mail with the headline ‘Stalin Attacks Churchill’.
There are multiple different areas to explore too, including one section with lots of hanging plants and another cosy area with a fireplace.
Look out for a small plaque ’round the back of the pub as well, which is dedicated to Gary O’Brien who was the pub’s landlord for 32 years before retiring in 2017.

It isn’t just Christmas when the pub has a spectacular display either.
In the summer, the pub is known for its extravagant flower displays which have even resulted in the spot becoming a Chelsea Flower Show winner.
One recent visitor said: “Such an adorable spot.
“We grabbed two pints of some tasty raspberry cider just to try out the place and it was very busy on a midday Friday.”
Another added: “Cool Christmas lights, definitely gets you in the festive mood.”

And it has since confirmed that more flights will be now cancelled across Germany later this year, affecting 24 routes.
This affects the cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Memmingen – many popular Christmas Market destinations.
The airports of Dortmund, Dresden, and Leipzig will also remain closed over winter.
The airline claims high airport taxes are the reason for their departure, calling for them to be lowered.
Ryanair CMO Dara Brady, said it was “disappointing” that the new German government have failed to reduce the aviation tax and access costs, and that the “German air travel market is broken”.
He added: “As a result, Ryanair has been left with no choice but to reduce our Winter ’25 capacity by over 800,000 seats and cancel 24 routes across 9 high-cost German airports (including Berlin, Hamburg, and Memmingen), in addition to maintaining our closures of Dortmund, Dresden, and Leipzig.
“This completely avoidable loss of connectivity will bring our capacity below Winter ’24 levels and will have a devastating impact on German connectivity, jobs, and tourism.”

You don’t need to jet off to far-flung destinations for a dose of winter sun – there’s a UK island that boasts more sunshine than parts of Italy.
The Isle of Wight has been crowned the sunniest spot in the UK by the Met Office, outshining even Milan and Geneva during the winter months.
According to research from Isle Escapes, the island enjoys an average of 78 hours of sunshine per month between November and February.
That’s a staggering 12 percent more than Milan’s 70 average hours, 15 percent more than Geneva’s 68 hours, and 20 percent more than Paris’ 65 average winter sunshine hours.
This balmy climate could be due to the warming effect of the Solent – the strait that separates the Isle of Wight from mainland England, reports the Express.
The island benefits from its own micro-climate, which means it typically avoids extreme weather conditions like heavy snowfall and thunderstorms during the winter season.
Not only is it the sunniest place in the UK, but this is particularly noticeable during the winter, when the Isle of Wight basks in 42 percent more sunshine hours than the rest of the country.
If you’re keen to soak up some of this sun for yourself, the Isle of Wight offers a fantastic island getaway without straying too far from home.
Located just off the coast of Hampshire, the island is renowned as Britain’s dinosaur capital, with the remains of over 20 species discovered on the island.
The Isle of Wight is a top-notch destination for cycling enthusiasts, boasting numerous tracks and paths that crisscross the island.
For those up to the challenge, you can cycle around the island in a day – a well-signposted route of approximately 105km.
While mostly flat, there are some inclines that will give your thighs a workout, and it can get breezy, so be prepared.

History buffs can visit Osborne – Queen Victoria’s country retreat and family home, now open for tours. After her first visit to Osborne, Queen Victoria wrote: ‘It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot’, and she wasn’t wrong.
A trip to Osborne offers something for everyone. Inside the house, you’ll get a glimpse into Royal life as you explore private apartments and grand reception rooms filled with beautiful furnishings and artworks from the Royal Collection.
And if the sun is out (which it likely will be), you can stroll through flower-filled gardens and relax on the beach where the Royal children learnt to swim.
If you’re yearning for a trip to the Isle of Wight, it’s easy to reach from mainland UK. Daily flights depart from Heathrow and Gatwick, or you can opt to fly to Bournemouth or Southampton before hopping on one of the 150 ferry connections to the island which take as little as 45 minutes.
Since the Isle of Wight is part of the UK, there’s no need for your passport – just pack your bag and perhaps a sunhat.

On top of the Bussey Building in Peckham is a huge rooftop bar – and it is set to be turned into an ice rink for the winter season.
From November 17 until January 1, the Bussey Rooftop Bar area will be transformed into an ice rink with a bar.
On Facebook it said: “Tickets are LIVE for London’s freshest rooftop ice rink! Skate under the stars, then head to our Après Skate Bar for spiked hot chocs, winter spritzes, mulled magic and DJs every Fri & Sat bringing all the feels“.
The Bussey Rooftop Bar will become the Après Skate Bar and transform into a winter lodge – think twinkly lights, outdoor heaters and blankets.
Also on the rooftop, you’ll be able to buy bar snacks and grab stone-baked pizzas.
Tickets for the ice rink are on sale now and cost £14 for adults, £10 per person for family tickets, and £9 for children.
Kara Godfrey, Deputy Travel Editor, loves the rooftop bar, she said: “One of my favourite places to go isPeckham, because of its famous rooftop. I’ve spent many a sunny day at the Bussey building, a rooftop on top of a car park.
“It serves amazing pizzas and beers and has fantastic music playing as well. When the sun goes down, make sure to grab afilmat Peckhamplex with £5.99 tickets all day, or Four Quarters, a retro arcade bar.“

Zakopane, Poland
Zakopane located in Poland is known for being a top ski destination, especially thanks to the Tatra mountains.
The town has its own Christmas market to get you in the festive spirit, with stalls selling regional food such as oscypek – smoked sheep cheese.
Accommodation prices for December stays aren’t bad either.
For example, you could stay at willa anulka na Hrubym for five nights for £191 total for two adults and two children – and it is only 1.1 miles from the ski lifts.

It is the perfect spot to stay in with kids as there is an outdoor play area and garden.
Kakheti, Georgia
Kakheti in Georgia is known for being a great wine region, with many wineries hosting Christmas events throughout December.
Visitors can head to one of the wineries and try wines made in the region, aged in qvevris – a traditional clay vessel used in the winemaking process.
Georgia also has a ‘feast’ culture, known in the country as ‘supra’, with local treats including churchkhela – candle-shaped walnut sweets.

When it comes to accommodation, there are a vast array of options depending on your budget.
For example, you could stay in the winery at Elizbar Talakvadze for £391 for five nights in December, for a family of four.

Cologne in Germany is often considered one of the most festive cities in the world with multiple Christmas markets to explore.

Or alternatively opt for a Christmas market classic, a Bratwurst with sauerkraut.
The city is also home to a beautiful Cathedral worth visiting.

The French Alps are an idyllic spot for a holiday during the Christmas period with Courchevel being transformed with festive lights and cheery decorations.
The destination has lots of family friendly activities including skiing, with ski schools for little ones, ice skating and dog sledding.
Courchevel is about two hours from Geneva Airport, which you can fly to in December for as little as £46 return from London, £48 return from Liverpool and £50 return from Belfast.
Accommodation in Courchevel is typically more expensive, however there are some good deals out there, such as a stay during the first week of December at the La Tania 309 Le Britania apartment, which is just a short walk from the ski lift.
For five nights for a family of four it costs from £370.
There are many more options for chalets between the £600 and £1,000 mark for a week, for a family of four in December.

Tallinn, Estonia
The capital of Estonia, Tallinn, is known for its UNESCO-listed old town which looks like it has been ripped from the pages of a Disney fairytale.
Add in the snow the city often gets and some festive spirit, it becomes a great option for a Christmas getaway.
In the Town Hall Square, there is a Christmas market which claims to be one of the oldest in Europe, dating back to 1441.
The market has lots of stalls with Estonian snacks such as blood sausages.
It is cheapest to fly to Tallinn from London, with return fares costing from £44 in December.
Options for accommodation in the city are vast, including Park Inn by Radisson Central Tallinn for £413 for five nights for a family of four.

Just 20 minutes away from Phuket’s tourist-choked roads and party-hopping beaches, this peaceful little paradise in the heart of Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay feels frozen in time – almost as if it’s veiled by a ‘90s sepia-toned filter.
Life moves slowly here, carried by the chorus of tropical cicadas and the gentle lull of the sea.
Meaning “big long island,” Koh Yao Yai drifts in relative anonymity between Phuket and Krabi.
The afternoon I arrived on the island by speedboat, I wandered along the empty stretch of Loh Pared Beach, feeling a bit like young Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach, eyes wide as he stumbled upon a deserted Maya Bay for the first time.
Ironically, today, Maya Bay remains packed with tourists, while this secret spot, just two ferries away, brims with the kind of charm that time forgot.
What To Do in Koh Yao Yai
Enjoy Sidecar Rides Along Phang Nga Bay
One of the best things to do on the island is hit the roads on a 110cc scooter and drift aimlessly through its fishing villages.
I loved drinking in the sights of island life as they whizzed past: water buffalos wallowing in muddy fields, sparkling sea views layered with limestone karsts, and stilt-propped homes in shades of pink, and blue.
Many hotels and local motorbike operators rent scooters for as little as £6 (฿300) a day.
You can also hire a vintage-style scooter with a sidecar – a fun way to get around these parts – if you fancy a romantic twist to your island holiday.
Take a Batik Painting Class By The Sea
Across the hill from Klong Hia Pier, a local batik shop offers a relaxing afternoon escape from the island’s heat-hazed beaches.
When I visited Batik De Ko Yao, the instructor Lai led me to a bench overlooking the sea and guided me through the basics of batik painting.
The entire process, from tracing the design with molten wax to brushing it with vibrant dyes, was surprisingly meditative.
Once done, Lai dyed and proofed the piece before packing it up for me to take home.

Explore Crowd-Free Beaches
The beaches of Koh Yao Yai are starkly empty save for ghost crabs scuttling in and out of flint-coloured sand, or the occasional longtail boat with locals out fishing.
Especially worth visiting is Laem Haad beach, where the tide retreats beyond the shore each morning, revealing a serpentine sandbar that’s fun to walk across.
From there, you can spot the island’s smaller sibling, Koh Yao Noi.
In the evenings, watch the sun smear the skies in orange-pink hues at Loh Pared Beach, a soft white-sand cove on the island’s western end.
Another excellent spot is the Klong Son beach, where I arrived after braving a rocky road flanked by rubber trees.
The sun was blazing, the water warm, and although I craved a cold drink, I was pleased to see that there were no shops or shacks lining the beach.

Take a Mangrove Tour
The island’s mangrove routes are perfect for relaxed and low-impact activities like kayaking.
Local guides lead you through canopied mangrove forests and sunlit lagoons in southern Koh Yao Yai, where you can spot a variety of indigenous wildlife – from mudskippers and tree snakes to monitor lizards and tropical birds – as you kayak through the waters.
Where To Eat and Drink
Koh Yao Yai is home to a predominantly Muslim population, which means bars and booze shops are rare – but not impossible to find.
Small, family-run shacks also dot the island, serving fragrant Massaman and Panang curries with rice, spicy salads, and Thai specialties for as little as £3 to £4 per plate, or under £20 for a meal for two.
One local favourite is Isaan Fine1, which has a bar menu serving cheap Thai beers like Singha, Leo, and Chang’s for just £3 a pop.
While you’re here, make sure to fill up on pad thai, drunken noodles, and fresh Thai salads, too.

Another spot to enjoy drinks, grub, and music after a day out is Gypsy, a rustic island-style shack on the far end of Loh Pared Beach.
Sink your toes into the sand while you enjoy a cold beer or a mojito for just under £5.
For a more elevated experience with bay views, head over to the Jetinn Sunset at Pier at the Santhiya Resort.
Open from 5p.m to 7 p.m. daily, this overwater bar offers a lively sundowner vibe with panoramic views of Phang Nga Bay.
Cocktails are a bit pricier than elsewhere, but the vibe and views more than make up for it.
Where To Stay
If you don’t mind the splurge, lavish retreats like the Santhiya Koh Yao Yai and Anantara Koh Yao Yai offer idyllic sea-view villas and suites from £140 and £275 per night.
For a more laidback stay, the Thiwson Beach Resort offers rustic bungalows overlooking the sea from just £70 a night.
A short walk away, the Better View Resort has sea view rooms for £84 a night.

If you prefer to keep it simple and stretch your stay, budget-friendly options like the Koh Yao Beach Front are excellent.
Located steps away from the Laem Haad beach sandbar, you can rent breezy bamboo huts here for as little as £27 a night.
Tucked further inland, the Patcharin Homestay and Bahnwalee offer clean wooden cottages between £20-£30 a night.
Wherever you stay, Koh Yao Yai presents a glimpse of Thailand as it once was: unhurried, unfiltered, and magical.

It is generally not allowed to take a child on holiday during term time in the UK and can result in a fine of up to 160 – but there may be exceptions

If you’re planning a winter getaway to escape the UK’s chilly temperatures, be warned – you could face a £160 fine if you pick the wrong time. In the UK, taking children out of school for a holiday during term time is generally not permitted and can result in a penalty.
This follows last year’s confirmation from the Department for Education that UK schools must consider issuing a fine if a child misses 10 or more sessions without authorisation. Remember, 10 sessions equate to five school days, as each day is split into two sessions – morning and afternoon.
When a fine is handed out, parents are only required to pay £80 if they settle it within 21 days of receipt. However, if payment is made within 28 days, the fine doubles to £160.
If a parent has previously been fined for the same child within a three-year period, the higher rate of £160 is automatically applied. Moreover, parents could find themselves in deeper hot water if they exceed the limit of two fines within any three-year period. This could lead to a parenting order or even prosecution.
If you end up in court due to your child’s absence, you could be hit with a fine of up to £2,500 or even face up to three months behind bars. Government guidance reveals that approximately 89% of unauthorised absence fines are due to children being taken on holiday during term time.
Reasons why your child can miss school and avoid a fine
According to the Department for Education, you can only allow your child not to be in school when it’s open for the following reasons:
Your child cannot attend school on that day because it is a day you are taking part in religious observance.
You are a gypsy/traveller family with no fixed abode, and you are required to travel for work that day meaning your child cannot attend their usual school.
Your child is too ill to attend that day.
You have asked in advance and been given permission by the school for your child to be absent on that day due to exceptional circumstances.
Your local authority is responsible for arranging your child’s transport to school and it is not available on that day or has not been provided yet.

However, not every piece of feedback was completely glowing. A visitor highlighted some disadvantages: “There is a ton of seaweed on the beach these days, which is a bummer, and the music is a bit too loud for my taste, but I am told this will change once the renovations are completed this Fall. However, overall, the value of what is included (everything) and the quality of service can not be beat.”

WARNINGS of potential blackouts this winter have been issued, with “tight days” for energy supply expected in early December and mid-January.
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has warned that there may still be tight periods this winter where electricity supply struggles to meet demand.

In these cases, system notices could be issued to increase production, with imported electricity from Europe helping to prevent blackouts.
Despite the concerns, NESO says spare supply, known as electricity margins, is at its strongest level since 2020.
It added that new battery storage along with European imports will play a key role in avoiding disruptions.
The electricity grid operator and National Gas released their winter outlook reports as energy prices rose earlier this month following an increase in the price cap.
NESO’S report said: “We expect a sufficient operational surplus throughout winter, although there may still be tight days that require us to use our standard operating tools, including system notices.”
System notices are how the grid operator informs the wider energy industry that electricity supply has not matched demand, allowing for production to increase if needed.
Early data from electricity firms and forecasters has suggested that “tight days” are most likely to take place in early December or mid-January.
Neso added that imports will be available when needed to help cover demand, supported by “adequate electricity supply across Europe”.
Deborah Petterson, director of resilience and emergency management at NESO, said: “A resilient and reliable energy supply is fundamental to our way of life.
“At NESO we are looking at the upcoming winter and can report this year’s winter outlook sets out the strongest electricity margins in six years.
“It is critical that we continue our work with the wider energy industry to prepare for the coming months to build on this foundation and maintain our world-leading track record of reliability.”

What about gas supplies?
The latest analysis from National Gas indicated that Great Britain has enough gas supply capability to meet peak demand.
It indicated supply can meet demand, even “even accounting for unforeseen network outage scenarios”.
The gas network operator said gas demand is expected to be 3% lower than last winter, easing pressure on supply.
It said high-demand days are still expected but it stressed that it is “confident” the market will operate as needed.
Glenn Bryn-Jacobsen, director of energy systems and resilience at National Gas, said: “As we head into winter, we remain confident in the resilience of our gas system and our ability to meet Britain’s energy needs during periods of peak demand.
“The energy landscape is evolving, with a growing reliance on imports and the continued decline of UK continental shelf supplies.
“Meeting these challenges requires a co-ordinated, forward-looking approach, and we’re working closely with Government, industry, and regulators to develop the right solutions that safeguard security of supply for the future.”
But the report from National Gas shows a fall in Britain’s gas storage capabilities, thanks to the Rough storage site off the coast of Yorkshire no longer storing gas, which means there is an increased reliability on importing liquified natural gas (LNG) to plug the gap in times of high demand.
The facility in the North Sea is the largest of its kind in the UK, but owner Centrica has stopped filling it with natural gas amid concerns over its financial viability.
The Rough site comprises about half of Britain’s storage capacity, and acts as a buffer when the weather is especially cold and demand for gas spikes.
Centrica has long warned it will be decommissioned without government support to allow investment in the site.
Last winter, Britain narrowly avoided blackout warnings as freezing weather caused wind power to plunge, leaving the grid struggling to meet demand.
NESO paid £21million – ten times the usual rate – to keep gas power plants running to balance the shortfall in January.
Experts criticised the system operator for failing to predict peak energy demand and relying too heavily on renewable energy during winter.
Wind power dropped to 17.6%, while gas provided half of the country’s electricity.
Critics argued this reliance on weather-dependent energy left Britain vulnerable and called for more investment in gas and nuclear power for reliable supply.

They explained that many families are paying more than necessary because their central heating flow temperature is set too high.

Around 80% of UK homes use acombi boiler,which heats water directly from the mains without a storage tank.
However, most homeowners do not realise that the flow temperature, which is the temperature of water circulating throughradiators, is often set unnecessarily high.
Hidden dial
Locating the dial that controls this and reducing the setting from 75-80 degrees celcius, down to around 60 degrees can improve efficiency.
This will help to lower your bills by up to 8%, which could represent savings of around £200 a year for the average household.
But make sure you’re turning the correct dial and not confusing the flow temperature dial with the hot water temperature dial, which controls water used in taps and showers.
It is vital not to lower this dial as hot water must be stored at a minimum of 60 degrees to prevent the growth of legionella bacteria.

Adjustments should only be made to the dial marked with a radiator or thermometer symbol.
And for homes with heat-only or regular boilers that heat a separate hot water tank as well as the central heating, the advice differs.

Adjusting the central heating flow temperature on most combi boilers only takes a few minutes.
Most models have a flap at the bottom to reveal the controls, and for boilers with a pointer rather than a digital display, setting it to the 12 o’clock position usually lowers the flow temperatures to 60 degrees.

1. Turn your heating down by one degree
You probably won’t even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70.
2. Switch appliances and lights off
It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights that are not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use, can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills
3. Install a smart meter
Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used.
4. Consider switching energy supplier
No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you’ve let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven’t browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.
Homeowners who are unsure are advised to ask a heating engineer to make the adjustment during the next service.

The cash boost comes as part of the Winter Fuel Payment, which is a benefit issued by the DWP to help elderly people with fuel costs over the colder months.

What happens now?
If you did not opt out, HMRC will change your tax code and you will receive a tax code notice letter.
Changing your tax code means that your Winter Fuel Payment will be deducted from your income and paid to HMRC in monthly instalments.
So for example, if you received a £100 Winter Fuel Payment but had an income of £35,000, you will pay back around £9 every month.
You will be charged from April 2026, which is the start of the new tax year.
Households can check if they are over the income thresholds by visiting www.tax.service.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-hmrc-will-take-back-your-winter-payment/start/country.
How to opt out of future charges
The deadline for opting out of the Winter Fuel Payment for 2025 to 2026 has passed.
But you can opt out of getting the benefit for 2026 to 2027 from April 2026.
When it reopens, you will need to complete either an online form or phone the helpline on 0800 731 0160.
If you opt to complete the form online, you will need details such as your National Insurance number.
Who is not eligible for the payment?
You can get a Winter Fuel Payment if you were born before September 22 1959 and live in England or Wales.
But a small group of individuals will not be eligible, including:
live outside England and Wales
were in hospital getting free treatment for the whole of the week of 15 to 21 September 2025 and the year before that
need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave says that you cannot claim public funds
were in prison for the whole of the week of 15 to 21 September 2025

Italy will submit a proposal for a worldwide ceasefire to the United Nations before next year’s Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani said.
As a concept, a global truce during the Olympics dates to the ancient games in Greece, where warring factions agreed to put down their arms for the duration of the event, so that athletes could safely travel to and from ancient Olympia.

Calls by Olympics organisers and the UN for global ceasefires have not been heeded on the occasion of modern-era Games since 1896, including the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Milano Cortina Games open on February 6 and run to February 22.
“In view of the Milano Cortina Olympics, we are presenting a proposal for an Olympic truce for all wars, including Ukraine and the Middle East, to the United Nations,” Tajani said on Tuesday.
“We must be champions of peace,” he said on the sidelines of an international conference in Rome. “We support the US plan (to end the war in Gaza), and, as Pope Leo has said, we must never give up hoping for peace.”
The 20-point plan presented by United States President Donald Trump, on which Israel and Hamas began indirect talks on Monday, is seen as the most promising initiative to end a war that has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023. Most people who are eligible will get the payment automatically, and will receive letters in the post from the DWP in October and November telling them how much cash they will receive.
However, certain pensioners will need to apply to get the benefit.
You can apply either by post or over the phone, and the DWP phone lines to make a claim open on October 13.
Postal applications opened earlier on September 15.
Pensioners have until March 31 2026 to make a claim.

If you don’t receive any of these benefits, you’ll need to claim manually if you’ve not got the Winter Fuel Payment before, or if you’ve deferred your State Pension since your last Winter Fuel Payment.
While the highest amount of free support is £300, the total will depend on when you were born and your circumstances on the qualifying week, which is between September 15 and 21 of this year.
Pensioners born before September 22, 1959, with an income of £35,000 or below will be eligible for between £100 and £300 to help towards heating bills.
Those hoping to receive the cash must be 66 by the end of the qualifying week.
You won’t be eligible for the payment if you earn more than £35,000 a year, and HMRC will claw back the automatic payment made to you through your tax code or tax return.
Your income can come from a range of factors including, your private pension and state benefits.
Other people who won’t be eligible include those who:

The Winter Fuel Payment was axed for 10million pensioners last year, with only those on certain benefits qualifying.
But the government was forced to perform a U-turn after a huge public outcry, with the funding now being reinstated for millions.
The gov.uk website provides further guidance on the scheme and how to make a claim.
Pensioners are also being warned to be wary of text messages from scammers posing as the DWP, who try to get you to click on a fake link to make a claim.
These are not official DWP messages and should be deleted, the government has said.
The Winter Fuel Payment is separate from the Warm Home Discount, which offers struggling households £150 off their electricity bill.
The money is not paid to you, and households that are eligible will have the discount applied to their bill by their energy provider.
What energy bill help is available?
There’s a number of different ways to get help paying your energy bills if you’re struggling to get by.
If you fall into debt, you can always approach your supplier to see if they can put you on a repayment plan before putting you on a prepayment meter.
This involves paying off what you owe in instalments over a set period.
If your supplier offers you a repayment plan you don’t think you can afford, speak to them again to see if you can negotiate a better deal.
