Grant Leary of Crespi High has a future as a golfer _ and photographer.
After winning the Southern Section individual title last week with a 66, Leary went on to practice his other fun endeavor — photography. He was shooting photos for the school yearbook at Crespi’s Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoff game.
Asked to set up a photo of himself, he brought out an iron, put one of his unused tees in his mouth and posed with a smile.
Only a junior, Leary won the tournament at Temecula Creek Country Club. He went to the final hole tied. He faced a seven-foot putt for a par but wasn’t aware of its importance.
“I knew it was a very big putt,” he said. “I didn’t know if it was for a tie or the win.”

WASHINGTON — A lot has happened since the Democratic presidential candidates last clashed on the debate stage. Former Vice President Joe Biden has taken some blows. Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s support has surged. Ten candidates who were on the stage back in July have either dropped out or been cut from the debate because of poor polling and fundraising.
That is just how the Democratic National Committee wants it. Party leaders wanted an early set of debates open to even obscure candidates, then a steady process of winnowing the herd.
Thursday’s debate in Houston could be less of a free-for-all than the previous two. There will still be 10 podiums, but the stage will be free of fringe candidates with little to lose. It is the first time voters will get to see all the top-tier candidates on the stage at once.
Here are five things we will be watching:
Spotlight on Warren
The Massachusetts senator has so far avoided hand-to-hand political combat on the debate stage. We’ve seen California Sen. Kamala Harris grab headlines by pillorying Vice President Biden’s history on busing. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard made her name briefly the most searched term on Google during the July contest by relentlessly attacking Harris and her history as a prosecutor. Former Housing Secretary Julián Castro’s spirited takedown of fellow Texan Beto O’Rourke over how to handle unauthorized border crossings put Castro on the map.
It’s not Warren’s style to take such shots.
But she may not be able to avoid them Thursday.
Warren’s ascendancy gives rivals cause for anxiety. They are eager to slow her down. After struggling early in the race, she has now moved into at least a tie with Sen. Bernie Sanders for second place and has passed the Vermont senator in some polls.
Warren draws huge crowds everywhere she goes. At the New Hampshire State Democratic Convention last weekend, the attendees cheered loudest and longest for her. Look for others on the stage to seek opportunities to trip her up.
Warren, for her part, plans to stick to her playbook of focusing on policy and the economic inequality she argues justifies levying big taxes on the wealthy and the new government programs she proposes. We’ll see if she can stay above the fray.
The last time Warren was the focus of personal political attacks — when President Trump targeted her claim of Native American ancestry —her flatfooted response nearly doomed her presidential prospects. Warren may need to show Thursday that neither Trump, nor any of her Democratic rivals, can inflict that kind of political damage again.
Biden on the hot seat
Former Vice President Joe Biden will still be carrying the frontrunner’s burden: A target on his back. His rivals — especially those struggling to climb into the top tier of candidates — will be tempted to take aim at him.
Given Biden’s lackluster performances in the first two debate rounds, he still has a lot to prove to skeptics about his ability to parry attacks, make clear points and avoid the verbal gaffes that have littered his campaign appearances.
Those differences frame a basic choice facing Democratic primary voters: Do they want a nominee like Warren who is asking voters to dream big and make fundamental progressive changes in the U.S. economy, or a nominee like Biden who is proposing a more pragmatic agenda and seen as a safer choice to beat Trump?
Previous debates have not played to Biden’s strong suit — his command of international affairs. During the last round of debates, only 17 minutes focused on foreign policy, according to an analysis by the Washington Post. Biden’s team hopes there will be more questions on the subject.
Can Mayor Pete bust out?
Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., will be looking to break out of his status as a second-tier candidate with a top-tier fundraising capacity. He probably won’t do it by frontally attacking anyone because Buttigieg is pitching himself as the candidate who can bring people together.
He likely will re-up his argument for generational change, an implicit slap at the three septuagenarians — Biden, Warren and Sanders — at the top of most polls. And he could draw a contrast between the more sweeping “Medicare for all” proposals of Warren and Sanders and his own more incremental health plan. A middle-of-the road profile could equip Buttigieg to benefit if Biden eventually falters and leaves a political opening for someone to emerge as centrist alternative to the Warren-Sanders axis.
But Buttigieg’s immediate mission on Thursday will be to make a stronger impression on the many voters who don’t know much about him. Despite his early success at fundraising — he was the top money raiser in the second quarter of 2019 — the burden of obscurity is heavier for him than for other, better known candidates on the stage.
Can Kamala Harris recapture some debate magic?
Pressure is high on Harris to turn in a standout performance, as she did in the first round of debates, and avoid the stumbles of the second. Now mired in the second tier of the candidate pack, she is hoping for an upturn in the roller coaster ride that has defined her campaign over the last several months.
First time out as a debater, Harris soared — in polls and fundraising — after her dramatic confrontation with Biden. Her energy fizzled in the second debate, when she was thrown on the defensive by attacks on her record as California’s attorney general and seemed ill at ease answering questions about her healthcare plan.
She may opt for the safer ground of attacking President Trump rather than her rivals and of promoting the common-ground message that was her original campaign theme. She, like Buttigieg, may try to position herself as a bridge-building alternative to Biden if he eventually loses his footing as frontrunner.
Is there room left for 10?
Even some of the candidates who made the cut for this debate seem to be on life support. Several are polling in the low single digits after having been in the race for months.
Many of the candidates started with a burst of energy and small-donor enthusiasm but have struggled since. They have yet to manufacture any breakout moments on the debate stage.
(Chris Keller / Los Angeles Times)
So the pressure is on for O’Rourke, Castro, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and entrepreneur Andrew Yang to generate some buzz out of this event. All the candidates talk about how much can change in Iowa or New Hampshire in the final weeks before voting. But voting is still a long way away, and it is an open question whether some of these candidates will be able to sustain a robust campaign until then if they don’t get something started tonight.

Dani and her close friends and family jetted to Ibiza on Friday for more pre-wedding celebrations.
The TV star shared Instagram stories of her on the flight with a bottle of Limoncello in her hand.
She flashed a big smile while wearing heart-shaped sunglasses, a veil on her head and a lace garter around the leg.
In a major nod to her future husband, Dani wore West Ham United’s traditional kit, with a claret shirt with blue sleeves, white shorts, and white socks.
On the back of the t-shirt had ‘Mrs Bowen to be’, with Jarrod’s jersey number 20.
This isn’t the first hen party Dani’s had in recent weeks.
The father-daughter duo discussed Dani’s upcoming nuptials – as well as Jarrod’s stag-do on their Live and Let Dyers podcast.
Dani said: “If you can go, Jarrod gets back on the Thursday and we’re married Saturday.”
At this point, Danny, 47, swiftly interjected by cheering: “Strippers!”
His daughter, however, proceeded to disagree with this possibility, saying “no, you’re not.”
She added: “We had a butler in the buff, but we had to draw him. We had to draw the naked man.”
The Marching Powder actor remarked: “That’s what we would do. We’d probably draw the…”
Dani cut in: “It’s different, I’m sorry, it’s so different.”
Dani and Jarrod got engaged last summer on a romantic boat trip in Ibiza, having escaped for a minibreak.
The couple left their one-year-old twin daughters Star and Summer at home with family, along with Dani’s son Santiago, three, from a previous relationship.
Speaking previously to Fabulous, Dani revealed: “We’ve found the venue, which is beautiful. It’s giving Bridgerton vibes. I want violins.
“I’m just praying it doesn’t rain. We’re getting married in the UK, so you never know!”
She added that their wedding “is very family-focused” with their twin daughters as flower girls.
“Jarrod’s little brother and my little Santi will be page boys,” she continued.
How Dani Dyer transformed her reputation
The daughter of everyone’s favourite EastEnders geezer Danny, is currently living the high life.
But Dani has had a rollercoaster few years, from her Love Island win back in 2018, to watching her son’s father Sammy Kimmence go to prison for fraud, and now navigating her glamourous new life as a WAG and mother of twin babies.
In recent years, Dani has completely shaken off the ‘chav’ persona, and has become one of the most well-known of the current EnglandWAGs.
Fabulous spoke to celebrity PR expert Ed Hopkins to find out the key steps Dani has taken to reinvent herself, including the tips she has borrowed from iconic WAG Cheryl Cole.
Ed revealed that Dani’s ability to navigate personal challenges, such as the scandal involving Sammy, has greatly played a crucial role in her reinvention.
Ed said: “By openly discussing her struggles and triumphs, she has built a strong, relatable persona.
“Her transparency about her personal life, including solo parenting and dealing with public scrutiny, has garnered significant public support and empathy.”
He also shared that Dani’s openness in discussing the challenges of motherhood, has helped to transform her reputation.
Ed said: “This openness has made her more relatable to a broader audience, particularly young mothers. She balances her public image by sharing both the joys and hardships of parenting, creating a more nuanced and authentic brand.”
Her unwavering support for her partner, has cemented her as one of the most well-known WAGS of this generation, according to Ed.
He said: “Her active support for Jarrod, including attending football matches and engaging with fans, mirrors the strategies used by high-profile WAGs like Cheryl Cole and Victoria Beckham, who also stood by their partners publicly and built their own identities alongside them.”
Not only this, but Ed revealed that Dani has been able to stay relevant over the years due to her candid use of social media.
He said: “Dani has consistently used media platforms to share her narrative, from interviews to social media updates.
“She has managed to stay relevant by engaging with her followers through candid posts and professional collaborations.
“This approach is reminiscent of how Victoria Beckham transitioned from pop stardom to a respected fashion designer, using media to reframe her public image.”
“My brother Arty is going to be a groomsman.
“Then I’ve got six bridesmaids. Knowing Dad, he will be an emotional wreck.
“He’s already planning his speech, too, but I’m not worried.
“I’m more concerned about Jarrod’s best man. He’s very cheeky.”

The mixed team final will make its competition debut at the Artistic European Gymnastics Championships.
The championships, in Leipzig, Germany, begin on Monday.
British Olympian Ruby Evans believes the mixed team event – which has also been added to the Los Angeles Olympics programme for 2028 – is an “exciting” addition.
Evans says it “adds a different challenge and a bit of variety to the championships”.
But what is it and how does it work?
One female and one male gymnast from each federation will compete in the event – in which scores in individual events are added together to make a team total.
Female gymnasts will score on vault, balance beam and floor, while male gymnasts compete on floor, parallel and horizontal bars – and the 16 mixed teams with the best scores in individual qualification go through to the final. The make-up of the teams is not decided in advance – it is determined by the qualification scores.
Jake Jarman, an Olympic floor bronze medallist for Team GB in Paris last year, said: “It’s a great way to bring men’s and women’s gymnastics together. It’s going to be really interesting to see the mixed team event debut and see how it goes down with the audience and fans.”
You can watch the mixed team final live on BBC iPlayer from 15:50 BST on Wednesday, 28 May.
When it comes to going over hurdles, DeAuna Louis of GALA is the best in the City Section. She will try to defend her City titles in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles on Thursday at the City Section track and field championships at Birmingham.
Equally important is her goal to do well at next weekend’s state championships at Buchanan High in Clovis.
She has become one of the most successful athletes in the history of the Girls Academic Leadership Academy, which is the first and only all-girls STEM school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Netflix viewers are divided after binging the gripping new series that was given a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score

A new Netflix docuseries, that currently holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, has been rocketing up the streaming platform ladder – and fans have two things to say about it.
The binge worthy series American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden has proved to be popular with viewers, especially those who had already watched its sister series American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing.
It delves into the counterterrorism efforts in the US following the 9/11 attacks, including the manhunt and capture of Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the terrorist attack.
The three-part series has been built using real life footage from the archives while talking to government officials who were in charge of decision making at that time.
By using real-life footage, directors Daniel Sivan and Mor Loushy were hoping to create an immersive series, taking viewers on a journey as they witness officials learning an attack on America iss about to happen as they attempt to find the perpetrator.
The way in which intelligence is uncovered throughout the series leads viewers to make up their own minds as to what they would do if they ever faced in the situation.
American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden is now avialble to stream on Netflix (Image: Netflix)
Speaking to Netflix Tudum, the directors commented: “For us, the best way to understand history is to truly experience it. Being thrown into the driver’s seat after the worst attack in American history would rattle anyone, even these brave men and women who had devoted their lives to protecting Americans by assessing geopolitical threats and sounding alarms that were often ignored.”
They added: “But the intelligence analysts didn’t have time to grieve or reflect. They had a mission at hand: to figure out who did this and stop them before the next attack.
Netflix fans raise one important issue
“American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden does not tell the story of the United States and the War on Terror,” stated Daniel and Mor. It tells the story of the people tasked to find the world’s most wanted terrorist and bring him to justice. It [was] a hunt that changed their lives, America, and the world as we know it.”
Most Netflix viewers have been full of praise offering up rave reviews about the miniseries on X while others have raised one important issue.
American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden is climbing up the streaming site rankings
One online user commented: “American Manhunt Osama Bin Laden was a riveting documentary series. Just 3 episodes, most of which I’ve seen bits and pieces over several documentaries/movies. But it was put together so well, especially the 3rd episode was nail biting cinema! Hard hitting! Must watch!”
A second fan agreed: “That Osama Bin Laden American Manhunt installment is soooo good. 10s to whoever produced & directed it.”
However, some viewers did note that they felt the documentary had felt one-sided, describing it as jingoistic at times. One comment read: “Watching the American manhunt for Osama bin Laden on Netflix rn, and it feels like the main point of the show is to make people sympathise with the CIA and the intelligence officers for their years-long intelligence failure. It’s an overkill at this point.”
Another shared the same sentiment, commenting: “Netflix has released American Manhunt Osama Bin Laden which seems to feature the “heroic” CIA Officers who worked in Alec Station?
“FBI & Congress blamed those clowns for actively concealing the presence of known Al Qaeda terrorists in USA before the 9/11 attacks. Not heroes. Idiots.”
American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden is available to stream on Netflix.

DEAR DEIDRE: OPENING up our relationship has been thrilling and better than I expected, until my boyfriend’s latest suggestion – that he sleeps with my childhood best friend.
Non-monogamy made our sex life far more exciting as we shared our adventures with each other. I’ve had three different partners, he’s had two and we always talk about our experiences after. It’s such a thrill.
But now he’s been making a move on a friend of mine and it feels too close to home. And instead of just talking about their adventures after, he wants to record it and ‘enjoy the footage together’.
His request feels like he’s overstepping the mark. I almost thought we didn’t need to say it but surely we shouldn’t be bringing in people we know already – let alone people we are close to.
And it’s one thing talking about our escapades and another thing being confronted with the evidence.
My boyfriend and I met three years ago in London, after I moved from the south coast. I’m 27 and he’s 28.
Dear Deidre After Dark- Understanding open relationships
We’ve been living together for just over two years and everything has been great.
It was my suggestion to try polyamory. Although at first he was cautious, after we both researched how to open up your relationship, he agreed to give it a go.
We’ve been non-monagamous for over a year now and make sure that we keep checking in with each other.
Our rules are simple, that we tell each other who we are seeing, and that we let the other person know our relationship status.
People warned me it would wreck our relationship but I’d say it’s done the opposite – up until now anyway. Our sex life is so much better and we talk about our sexual exploits with others which is so erotic.
I look at friends in long term relationships and can see they are getting bored staying in together night after night.
There is always so much going on in London, and I’ve loved exploring all the different areas when I’ve been on different dates.
I’ve seen three different guys regularly and my boyfriend has two regular women he hooks up with.
I’ve never felt a twinge of jealousy before, but I could tell when he came back to my home town with me at Christmas he’d taken a shine to my friend.
Not long after we returned he told me he’s started messaging her and was going to ask her out.
He seemed surprised when I got upset.
He’d be making a big effort to see her as he’d have to travel over an hour and a half to get there.
Am I being over sensitive or does he want to go too far?
The Different Types of Non-monogamy
There are many types of non-monogamous relationships. All of them allow sex with more than one person but the expectations for things like emotions, priority and lifestyles are very different.
Open Relationship/Monogamish
A committed couple that allows each other to have sex with other people.
Polyamory
Multiple emotional and sexual relationships at the same time, with the consent of everyone involved.
Hierarchical polyamory
A “primary” couple prioritise each other, but each has multiple romantic, sexual relationships too.
Non-Hierarchical Polyamory
Individuals engage in multiple romantic, sexual relationships without assigning priority.
Polyfidelity (also known as Triads, Couples or Quads)
Three or more people involved in an exclusive relationship.
Solo Poly
Having multiple intimate relationships with people while otherwise living a single lifestyle.
Swinging
A couple who have sex with other people, usually simultaneously.
Casual sex, casual dating, friends with benefits
Dating or having sex with multiple people, while remaining uncommitted to anyone.
Relationship Anarchy
Doing away with some or all of the traditional ‘rules’ applied to romantic relationships.
Polygamy
Polygamy is being married to more than one spouse. Polygamy isn’t legal in the UK.
DEIDRE SAYS: You’ve researched how to make non-monogamy work so will know the first rule is that you both have to be 100% happy with the arrangement.
The moment one of you feels unhappy or even unsure is the time to pause and reevaluate.
Talk to your boyfriend about your reservations. He won’t appreciate your position unless you explain.
This potential liaison isn’t solely about your boyfriend and his extra partner, it’s also about a pre-existing relationship between you and your childhood friend.
While you are totally at ease with your open relationship in London, bringing it closer to home, where you grew up and your family is, understandably feels different.
And as you say, your boyfriend would have to make a big effort to meet your friend, which could mean he’s getting emotionally involved.
Opening up your relationship for sexual relationships is one thing, but multiple romantic relationships can be much harder to navigate.
Again you both need to be clear about what you want from non-monogamy – is this about multiple sexual partners, or are extra emotional relationships okay?
My support pack Non-Monogamy explains more.

Deidre’s mailbag is bursting with open relationship problems. One reader was cut off by her best friend after finding out about her polyamorous relationship; another from a different subscriber who struggled with the reality of telling his family about his throuple, while one man was asked to open his relationship to hide his wife’s true sexuality.

Wearing a replica of his father’s No. 50 jersey, Kaj had the ball in hand while walking near the third base line and home plate. Betts was jogging into place to be on the receiving end of his son’s ceremonial pitch, which was supposed to be thrown from just in front of the plate.
Kaj had other ideas. He took off in a full toddler sprint, with a look of determination on his face as he ran as fast as his little legs could carry him.
At one point, his 6-year-old sister Kynlee nearly caught up with him, but Kaj turned on the jets and eluded her. He made it all the way to the basepath before pausing just long enough for his mom, Betts’ wife Brianna, to scoop him up and deliver him back to his designated spot.
Kaj Betts runs away with the ceremonial first-pitch ball, with big sister Kynlee in hot pursuit.
(Robert Gauthier / Los Angeles Times)
From there, Kaj delivered an on-target pitch/roll to Betts, who brought the ball back to his son. The adventure-seeking tyke immediately turned and took a step toward the outfield before his pops quickly gathered him for some photos.
The adorable antics were probably the most entertaining aspect of the night for L.A. fans, who then had to watch their team get clobbered by the Athletics 11-1. Betts went 0 for 3 but drove in the Dodgers’ only run of the night. In the third inning, Betts hit a ground ball to A’s shortstop Jacob Wilson, who bobbled the ball to allow Betts to reach first and Chris Taylor to score from third.
The 16th Diamond League season is under way as athletics’ Olympic stars build towards their shot at world glory in 2025, with coverage live on the BBC.
The series sees athletes compete for points in 32 disciplines across 14 meetings in a bid to qualify for the winner-takes-all two-day finals in Zurich in August.
That takes place just over a fortnight before the start of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September.
It is also the first year in which the Diamond League must compete with Michael Johnson’s new Grand Slam Track for athletes’ attention.
However, there has been only one direct clash between the two competitions – with the Miami Slam on 2-4 May having taken place at the same time as the meet in Keqiao, China on 3 May.
The Diamond League has increased its prize money to the highest level in its history, with a total prize pot of $9.24m (£6.95m) on offer across the series.
That includes $500,000 (£375,000) at each of the 14 series meetings, and $2.2m (£1.7m) at the Diamond League final.
BBC Sport has agreed a deal to broadcast the Diamond League for the next five years.
Watch the Doha Diamond League action on the BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app from 17:00 to 19:00 BST on Friday.
