MYLEENE Klass has revealed she has yet again turned down joining a Hear’Say reunion, as the band hits their 25 year anniversary.

It comes five years after the singer and TV personality revealed she had rejected re-joining her bandmates Kym Marsh, Danny Foster, Suzanne Shaw, and Noel Sullivan.

Back in December, Kym heavily hinted that the band would be returning in 2026 for a special performance.

However, Myleene, 48, has now confirmed she won’t be involved in that.

She said on today’s Loose Women: “I loved my time in Hear’say, I know it’s 25 years this year.

“Listen, they’ve had their discussions and I fully back them to go ahead and do a reunion.

“It’s not something I can commit to right at this moment. But you go and, you know, I’ll be front row – singing Pure And Simple!”

Myleene then admitted she wasn’t sure it was possible to recapture the magic of the band when it was first formed.

She said: “Generally speaking, I think it’s very hard to replicate the feeling of the first time.”

Hear’Say were put together on the talent show Popstars and in March 2001, their single Pure And Simple became, at the time, the fastest-selling debut single in the UK.

In December, Kym said of a reunion: “I always laugh and say ‘never say never’ about a Hear’Say reunion.

“We might pop up somewhere, just for a one-off performance down the line, to surprise everyone.”

Myleene was previously asked to take part in a Hear’Say reunion, revealing in 2021 that she had turned it down.

She said at the time: “There was definitely talk last year. Suzie came to my house just to have the discussion.  I said, ‘look at the minute, I have so much on’.”

Stourbridge Glass Museum, in Dudley, has revealed plans to permanently open its historic glassmaking tunnels to the public.

The tunnel network, located beneath the White House Glass Cone site, will form part of a brand new immersive exhibit.

Visitors will be able to view Stourbridge‘s more than 400 years of glassmaking history through VR, animation and projection-mapping technology, which will show the glassmaking process from start to finish. 

Although the museum occasionally runs tours of the tunnels, this will be the first time guests will be able to fully immerse themselves underneath the museum.

Alexander Goodger, the director of the Stourbridge Glass Museum, said: “This is just one part of our new phase of capital development designed to boost the site for locals, expand the offer, give it a wider appeal and bring in tourists to the area who then go on to stay in hotels and eat in restaurants, regenerating the area.

“We want to bring in investment for the Black Country’s heritage.”

The tunnels originally existed as storage for glassmaking materials, as well as to control heat and support the glass cone’s production processes.

As a result, extensive health and safety improvements, including signage, accessibility and lighting, will have to be carried out by the museum to ensure a “safe and free-flowing visitor experience”. 

The Stuart crystal factory, which previously stood at the site of the museum, was a major manufacturer of English cut glass until its closure in 2001.

The entire area, which was once considered “the heart of Britain‘s traditional Glass Quarter”, suffered the loss of the four major companies by the late 90s and early 2000s, with only a few glassworks remaining today.

Asylum seekers may be turned away at the southern border, Supreme Court rules

Asylum seekers may be turned away without a hearing at the southern border, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday in a historic retreat from the promise of relief for those who say they are fleeing persecution.

The justices split over whether this was a simple dispute over legal wording or a moral question involving desperate families.

Siding with the Trump administration, the court’s conservatives said the Refugee Act of 1980 offers a right to seek asylum to migrants who “arrive in the United States” but not those who are turned back when they approach a border crossing or a port of entry.

“This case presents a straightforward question” that turns on the word “in,” said Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. “In ordinary speech, no one would say that a person ‘arrives in’ a place — for example, a house, a city, or a country — before the person enters that place.”

The liberal dissenters agreed with immigration rights lawyers who saw this as a nonsensical reading of the law.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the asylum law arose from the “international moral reckoning that followed the Holocaust and World War II.”

She cited the infamous voyage of the MS St. Louis in 1939. More than 900 Jewish refugees attempted to flee persecution in Nazi Germany by setting sail aboard the ship, which was turned away from Cuba and the United States.

Most of the passengers were returned to Europe, and several hundred died in the Holocaust, she said.

“Congress passed the Refugee Act in 1980 because it did not want this country to repeat the mistakes of its past. Yet if the refugees on the M.S. St. Louis were to walk up to a port of entry on our southern border today, the majority’s interpretation would allow immigration officers to refuse even to consider their asylum applications by physically blocking them from stepping foot onto U. S. soil,” Sotomayor wrote.

Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson agreed.

The decision upholds a turn-back policy that began in 2016 as an emergency response to a surge of Haitian immigrants at the San Ysidro border crossing.

The Department of Homeland Security said these asylum seekers must wait on the Mexican side of the border until they could return for a scheduled interview. The policy was extended to other border crossings, but it was challenged as illegal in federal court in San Diego.

Last year, a divided 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that those restrictions were illegal if they prevented migrants from applying for asylum.

“To ‘arrive’ means ‘to reach a destination,’” wrote Judge Michelle Friedland. “A person who presents herself to an official at the border has ‘arrived.’”

She said the “government’s reading would reflect a radical reconstruction of the right to apply for asylum because it would give the executive branch vast discretion to prevent people from applying by blocking them at the border.”

The 2-1 decision upheld a federal judge in San Diego who ruled for migrants who had filed a class-action suit and said they were wrongly denied an asylum hearing.

But Solicitor Gen. D. John Sauer urged the Supreme Court to review and reverse the appellate ruling, noting 15 judges of the 9th Circuit joined dissents that called the decision “radical” and “clearly wrong.”

The administration argued federal immigration law “does not grant aliens throughout the world a right to enter the United States so that they can seek asylum.”

From abroad, they may “seek admission as refugees,” Sauer said, but the government may enforce its laws by “blocking illegal immigrants from stepping on U.S. soil.”

Defenders of the asylum system denounced the decision.

“We believe that today’s ruling violates international law, as well as the express intent of Congress,” said Erika Pinheiro, executive director of the migrant support organization Al Otro Lado, which led the legal fight. “For decades, the United States has allowed individuals and families who are fleeing persecution, torture and death to ask for protection at U.S. borders.”

“Cruelty is not a substitute for real solutions. Blocking people from seeking asylum at official ports of entry will do nothing to fix our broken immigration system, said Rebecca Cassler, senior litigation attorney at the American Immigration Council. “It only makes things more chaotic and dangerous for vulnerable families.”

The Federation for American Immigration Reform applauded the decision.

“Our immigration laws are written to be pro-enforcement, not-anti-enforcement,” said Christopher J. Hajec, deputy general counsel of FAIR. “Because of this, courts that hamstring enforcement are often forced to violate basic logic, as the 9th Circuit did here. We are pleased the Supreme Court saw that the lower court’s reading would make immigration law incoherent, and reversed.”

How Paris’ oldest bridge, Pont Neuf, was turned into a mountain cave

There’s a present-day answer to the question that was posed in verse by the French medieval poet and street brawler François Villon: “Where are the snows of yesteryear?”

They’re right here, in high summer, on Paris’ oldest bridge, the Pont Neuf, where an enormous art installation, a trompe l’oeil inflatable snow-clad mountain range, has arisen over the river Seine.

Using about 200,000 square feet of printed fabric, Paris-born street artist JR has created “La Caverne du Pont Neuf.” It’s his version of and homage to the innovative work of groundbreaking environmental artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

They’re the fabled duo who first wrapped the arches of this same bridge in straw-colored fabric in 1985. Over the years, they also surrounded 11 islands in Florida’s Biscayne Bay with flamingo-pink cloth, hung saffron-colored fabric “gates” in New York’s Central Park, installed a “running fence” of billowing white material across nearly 25 miles of Sonoma and Marin counties and, in 1991, planted 3,100 yellow umbrellas, blooming like 20-foot-tall poppies, through the Tejon Pass north of L.A.

I interviewed Christo in 2011, and he was eloquent about how his and his wife’s work alters perceptions of nature, and about the deliberately transient character of the art itself. JR, an acolyte of their work, told me in an email that “an ephemeral artwork forces you to come now, and usually to come with other people. The visit becomes a shared moment … and this moment becomes a memory.”

In a city celebrated for artworks that have survived for centuries, this installation was very nearly too transient. A kooky hailstorm in late May, a heat wave in June, followed by ruthlessly ripping winds, delayed the opening by days. At last, beginning one midnight, the air pumps began and the work arose like a limestone-colored soufflé. It will be open around the clock until June 28.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. Back in 1985, Christo’s engineer on the Pont Neuf project, Ted Dougherty, pointed out that above 25 mph, “wind is not our friend.”

The piece works from two vantage points: from afar — visible from a lot of central Paris — and also from inside it, in the “cave” part. Pedestrians crossing the bridge pass through a fabricated interior, a cavern-like space printed in 3D realism and enhanced with a specially designed scent to evoke the dank, earthy aroma of humankind’s early habitations.

JR intended it to be both. “From the start I designed two works in one. There is the silhouette — what you catch from the quais, from the bridges, from a boat on the Seine or simply walking past on your way somewhere else. That image belongs to everyone, including the people who never chose to look at art that day.”

And then, he said, “there is the inside, which is slower and more intimate, almost in the dark, hard to photograph.” That aspect is “a journey to cross the bridge, to go from darkness to light.”

When Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the arches of the Pont Neuf more than 40 years ago, it took years of planning and permits to make it happen. “La Caverne du Pont Neuf” was a breeze by comparison.

JR, whose other vast outdoor works have delivered double-takes of humans’ scale and their architecture, told me that cities have come to understand “that public art brings people together and that the image travels around the world. Once Christo showed it could be done safely and beautifully, the conversation changed. It was much easier for me to have my project accepted, thanks to them. They also proved the economic positive impact to the cities they worked in. I believe there should be more large-scale, ambitious public art projects.”

It’s one thing to conceive of such a project and another altogether to make it happen — so much technology, compared to, say, mixing paints and choosing a paintbrush. But the science that “La Caverne” required “is the art, not an obstacle to it,” JR said.

All the canvas, the engineering, the meticulous assembly, the permits — “none of that is preparation for the work, it is the work. Christo taught me this. The process is visible, and even more after the storm we experienced a couple of days before opening to the public. Nature always reminds you who is in charge. When the wind tore the canvas before we opened, we took it down, re-sewed it, reinforced it,” all in full public view.

“Where I stay careful is in not letting the technology become the subject. The augmented reality by Snap’s AR Studio adds to the project, doesn’t take you away from it.”

That air should be JR’s vital collaborator — no complex and costly scaffolding for these magic mountains — is nothing new in Paris.

The first free flight of humans above the earth, on Nov. 21, 1783, sent aloft two men in a hot-air balloon crafted by the Montgolfier brothers from silk fancifully painted in blue and gold with figures of the zodiac. It wafted across Paris for about 25 minutes at about 3,000 feet. Ephemeral, yes — and unforgettable.

Artists and couturiers are fond of the whimsy of trompe l’oeil, the trick of the eye, the illusion of reality. I am a sucker for it, for fashion like that of clothing designer Elsa Schiaparelli. JR has used it often, as a massive-scale magical deception to make the Louvre Pyramid “disappear” into the old Louvre, and opening up an imaginary subterranean world below the Eiffel Tower.

“Trompe l’oeil turns adults back into children,” he told me. “You know it isn’t real, you know that ‘La Caverne du Pont-Neuf’ is not made of rock, that this is printed canvas. And yet your eye wants to believe it, and for a moment you let yourself. That gap between knowing and believing is where the play happens, and people love being inside that gap.”

Abandoned Victorian island to be turned into tourist attraction

A 150-YEAR-OLD fort island left abandoned is set to become a new attraction in the UK.

Fort Darnet, which can be found on the River Medway in Kent, could soon be transformed into an events venue.

Plans for the Victorian fort include music events, as well as wellbeing events and even ghost hunts.

Speaking to the BBC, owner Mick Jennings said: “I said to my wife ‘we’ve got to have a fort – it’s something we have to bid on’ and we did and were successful.”

According to Jennings, music artists have approached him about filming at the fort – which he added has great acoustics.

Fort Darnet was built between 1870 and 1872 and could hold up to 100 men who would use it for gunnery practice.

Right by the fort, there are also a number of abandoned ships with some dating back to World War II, which were intentionally sunk to create a coastal defense.

The fort is currently unsafe to visitors due to “unstable structures, concealed drops and water-filled areas”, according to the website.

Jennings revealed that they will now drain the water out of the fort, as well as put some new safety measures in place.

With the fort currently having hidden holes, Jennings confessed that “it is a dangerous place at the moment”.

It remains unclear what events would be held at Fort Darnet though Medway Council is backing plans to reopen the site.

“The magical thing is when you come here – you can’t get that feeling until you are on an island.

“The views, eerie, magical, it’s got all those things,” added Jennings.

Congress Questions Air Force’s Combat Rescue Readiness As HH-60W Helicopters Get Turned Into VIP Transports

The Senate Armed Services Committee believes that the U.S. Air Force is currently unable to support combat search and rescue (CSAR) operations “in a major contingency.” Legislators say they are concerned about the CSAR force structure after the Air Force trimmed its buy of HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters and also elected to transfer some of these aircraft to the so-called Air Force District of Washington (AFDW) mission set, as you can read about here. This comes on top of concerns that the HH-60W fleet isn’t well suited for the realities of a war in the Pacific while no better solution is being sought.

The Senate Armed Services Committee released a full copy of the proposed legislation earlier this week. In this, it states that it is “concerned about CSAR force structure” in the Air Force.

The importance of the Air Force CSAR mission, and the role of the HH-60W specifically, was underscored earlier this year when the type took part in efforts to rescue the crew of an F-15E Strike Eagle shot down in Iran.

Now, the committee points to the Air Force’s decision to truncate its buy of heavily modified HH-60Ws, followed by the transfer of 26 of these from CSAR units to the AFDW to replace UH-1N Twin Huey helicopters. AFDW uses these helicopters to support continuity of government plans, contingency response, homeland operations, and ceremonial honors in the National Capital Region. Under normal circumstances, the vast majority of AFDW missions involve VIP movements.

“The committee believes that these actions have left CSAR forces unnecessarily short of the forces needed to support CSAR operations in a major contingency,” the legislators say. The committee has now called upon the Secretary of the Air Force to conduct a study of CSAR requirements and capabilities, including HH-60Ws and HC-130J Combat King IIs, and provide a report briefing to Congress before the end of March 2027.

Until that study is completed, the committee has called upon the Secretary of the Air Force to avoid making any more changes in CSAR force structure.

The Air Force had once planned to replace its AFDW UH-1Ns with new MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters, but revealed last year it was considering using HH-60Ws for this role instead. The Air Force’s proposed budget for the 2027 Fiscal Year confirmed that it was moving ahead with these plans.

As we have discussed in the past, the HH-60W will bring a substantial increase in speed, range, and payload capacity compared with the aging UH-1Ns now flying AFDW missions, while also outperforming the smaller, lighter MH-139 in each of those key metrics.

The Air Force’s current plan calls for development of the HH-60W AFDW variant to begin in Fiscal Year 2027, starting October 1, with the first aircraft entering modification the following fiscal year. Those reconfigured Jolly Green IIs would then begin replacing the increasingly outdated UH-1Ns assigned to the AFDW mission at Andrews Air Force Base (now part of Joint Base Andrews).

TWZ had previously raised the question of how the transfer of 26 HH-60Ws for the AFDW role might affect the operational capacity of the rest of the CSAR-focused fleet.

In particular, the Air Force has no plans to procure additional Jolly Green IIs despite the upcoming transfer.

As the Senate Armed Services Committee points out, the Air Force already decided to scale back HH-60W purchases, from an original program of record for 113 of the helicopters. The total planned fleet now stands at 91. This amounts to the CSAR fleet losing roughly 30 percent of its entire Jolly Green II fleet, the first of which began entering Air Force service in 2022.

The legislators point to the ongoing demand for CSAR capabilities, not just in lower-end conflicts such as the war with Iran, but especially in potential future high-end fights, such as one between the United States and China in the Pacific, where aircrew losses would be greater by an order of magnitude.

For years, TWZ has warned that the growing reach and sophistication of modern air defenses are calling into question the viability of traditional fixed-wing and helicopter CSAR missions. In a high-end conflict, especially against China in the Pacific, even stealth aircraft are expected to face significant risks inside contested airspace. The idea that a Black Hawk helicopter, no matter what is bolted onto it, is going to survive in that same environment is highly questionable, and that’s if it can even reach the rescue point at all. The distances involved in the Pacific are far greater than those in Europe or the Middle East, which the legacy CSAR fleet was largely optimized around.

Back in 2023, one of the Air Force’s senior procurement officers asserted that the HH-60W fleet would not be “particularly helpful in the Chinese area of operations” due to these reasons. The Air Force’s cuts to planned purchases of HH-60Ws reflected this reality, while other senior officials have acknowledged that the service will need to rethink how it carries out this critical mission in future wars. The issue is that the cuts didn’t result in other capabilities taking the HH-60W’s place, like uncrewed systems and tiltrotors. So now there is an emerging gap in CSAR capabilities, both in terms of new ones more aligned with the challenges of the Pacific and just any kind of CSAR capability at all. Turning a large portion of the HH-60W fleet into VIP transports certainly doesn’t help with problem.

For the time being, at least, the Air Force is heavily reliant upon its HH-60Ws, regardless of potential vulnerabilities. With orders for the Jolly Green II slashed, and more than two dozen examples slated to switch to another mission, it is perhaps not surprising that legislators want to know how the Air Force will be able to conduct CSAR in the future.

‘I got turned away at airport and paid nearly £1K due to passport mistake’

Ahead of a two-week holiday to the Canary Islands, one Brit arrived at the airport only to be told that his passport was invalid due to a travel rule – even though it was in date

A Brit was caught out by a common passport mistake and turned away at the airport, leaving their holiday plans in tatters.

Terry Winter, 56, from Oxford, had booked a two-week holiday to Tenerife with his wife, Molly Winter, 62, months in advance and was eager to ensure everything was set in place as it was his first time going abroad since 2018. Their passports were in date, they had a pre-booked airport hotel the night before their early morning flight, and had even found somewhere to go for dinner – everything seemed to be in order. Or so they thought.

On the morning of Friday, 12 June, they arrived at Birmingham Airport and went to check in their bags with easyJet, having already secured their boarding passes online. Yet, when Terry scanned his passport, an error message popped up.

“I put my suitcase on the check-in to get my tag, and that’s when the warning sign came up through easyJet”, Terry exclusively told the Mirror. He waited for assistance from a member of staff and was informed, ‘Your passport is not valid.’

While Terry’s passport had not expired, it had been issued more than 10 years earlier, meaning it did not meet EU entry requirements. “I didn’t know about this rule. I was shocked.”

Under post-Brexit travel regulations, all UK passports must have been issued less than 10 years prior to the date of arrival when visiting most European countries. Terry added: “There was nothing in my knowledge about this rule.

“There were two other people at the airport, and this was happening exactly at the same time. So this isn’t just a one-off thing.”

Just last week, a mum of three was left unable to board her easyJet flight to Greece with her family, due to the same passport mistake. She also only found out at the airport that her passport was not valid and had to fork out almost £700 in additional fees, while claiming that another holidaymaker was also turned away for the same reason.

Terry said he was surprised he hadn’t been warned about the passport rule before getting to the airport, having booked the holiday in January this year and entered his passport details on the easyJet website.

“They accepted the booking, didn’t tell me there wasn’t anything wrong at the time, and then three weeks before the flight, I had to put all my passport details in again to check in. It didn’t flag anything again, and my boarding passes were downloaded,” Terry remarked.

Terry said he asked an easyJet staff member at the airport, “How often does this happen?”, to which they reportedly replied: “It happens daily with a lot of people.” Terry added: “He said it will be happening all throughout the country.”

Having been left “frazzled” at the airport, Terry had no option but to urgently book an appointment through His Majesty’s Passport Office to obtain a new passport using the one-day premium service. His wife, whose passport was valid, chose to stay in the UK with him for extra support.

While there were no suitable appointments available in London, due to it being the weekend, Terry managed to secure a 9.10am slot for Monday (15 June) in Peterborough.

He and his wife travelled up to Peterborough from Oxford the night before, booked a hotel, and on Monday morning went to the passport appointment. Thankfully, after a few hours, Terry was issued a new passport, and he swiftly rebooked flights to Tenerife, departing on Tuesday, 16 June.

While he commented, “I’m just laughing the whole thing off”, Terry said he has lost out on “almost £1,000” in additional costs for his first trip abroad in eight years. He explained that this included around £40 in extra fuel, £50 for the Peterborough hotel, just under £100 for another night at the airport hotel, around £400 for two people flying to Tenerife one-way, and £239.50 for his new passport.

He added that he’s lost around “£400 on the flights” he wasn’t able to board originally, and said: “It’s getting close to nearly £1,000, I’ve been inconvenienced by.”

Terry also claimed that the day after his initial flight, on Saturday 13 June, he was sent a generic email reminder from easyJet that warned passengers: “Please check your travel documents before you fly.” In response, he said, “Well, that’s pointless. The day after, you’ve already lost your flight.”

A spokesperson for easyJet told the Mirror: “Unfortunately, Mr Winter was unable to fly as his passport did not meet passport validity rules. We remind customers during booking, check-in and by email before they travel to ensure they are aware of the travel documentation requirements for their trip, and it is customers’ responsibility to ensure they have valid documentation for travel.”

EasyJet has a dedicated page on its website that warns passengers about passport rules and requirements, including for travel to the EU. As part of these warnings, it explains: “Please check your passport’s expiry and issue date before you travel. If you’re a UK passport holder travelling to the EU (except Ireland), or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican City or Switzerland, your passport will need to meet the following criteria:

  • It must be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to depart from the EU or above countries*
  • It must be no more than 10 years’ old on the date of travel to the EU or above countries.

“Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland may travel within Europe using a valid EU/EEA/Swiss National Identity Card or Passport Card.”

Why England turned to Joe Root to replace Ben Stokes as interim England Test captain

England have described the arrangement for the second Test as “interim”, and its impermanence seems important.

On Monday, when it first emerged that Stokes and Gus Atkinson were in hot water, there was an immediate feeling it would spell the end of Stokes’ captaincy.

It still may. There is an ongoing investigation. Stokes could decide to walk.

But, with every passing hour, the temperature is cooling. Stokes could return for the third Test at Trent Bridge or, more likely, the series against Pakistan later in the summer.

Still, Stokes has given a window into what England’s life might be without him. For the first time in his career, Stokes the cricketer is not indispensable. Earlier this week, head coach Brendon McCullum had to defend his batting, and back Stokes to return to form.

If Brook had been put in charge, England may have seen something they like. Brook and McCullum seemed more aligned during the T20 World Cup than Stokes and McCullum did during the Ashes.

Brook would have been captaining his peers, whereas Stokes leads a group of younger men, many of whom grew up idolising him. Maybe England would have found a Stokesless formation that makes them stronger: the leg-spin of Rehan Ahmed as the all-rounder, followed by four specialist seamers.

None of this becomes an issue with Root in charge. He will be all too happy to hand over the reins when the time comes.

These roles were once reversed. In the Covid summer of 2021, Stokes stepped in for one Test while Root was on paternity leave. Root left a note on Stokes’ peg in the dressing room which said: “Do it your way”.

Now, Root will do it his way. Clapping his hands from first slip, long sprints to talk to his bowlers. A smile on his face, maybe a classic Rootian century. Not the puffed-out chest of an alpha like Stokes, just the calm reassurance of English cricket’s most dependable presence.

Once again, it is Joe Root riding to England’s rescue.

How Mexican cartels turned South African farms into meth production hubs | News

Johannesburg, South Africa – In the quiet mining town of Swartruggens, a small courthouse is preparing to decide whether five Mexicans accused of a major illegal drug operation will be granted bail or remain in custody.

Their arrests followed a raid on a remote farm in North West province, where police said they uncovered a large methamphetamine laboratory worth about one billion rand ($60m).

The case is one of several pointing to a pattern taking shape in South Africa’s rural interior.

The Swartruggens laboratory was not an isolated discovery.

It was one of four major meth sites linked to Mexican criminals uncovered in South Africa in just two years, a pattern that has unsettled investigators and organised crime experts.

In 2024, police dismantled a large meth facility worth about $105–110 million on a farm near Groblersdal in Limpopo. Later that year, another laboratory worth roughly $5–6 million was discovered near Tshwane, followed by arrests last year in Mpumalanga.

Then came Swartruggens.

When police moved in on the North West farm in May, they found 481 kilos of methamphetamine, containers of chemicals and firearms. Among those arrested were Mexican nationals Fabian Astorga, Jesus Alonso Medina Astorga, Luis Alberto Ramirez Rios, Jose Andres Medina and Jacquelin Lopez Madrid, alongside co-accused South Africans.

All the sites followed the same pattern: remote farmland, long distances from towns and enough isolation for criminal activity to go undetected.

For investigators, the pattern is becoming harder to ignore.

Mexicans are increasingly being found working alongside local collaborators in rural production sites, suggesting a shift from trafficking meth into Africa to producing it there.

Organised crime researcher Julian Rademeyer told Al Jazeera the model reflects a deliberate strategy.

“It’s quite a unique development where you have members of Mexican drug cartels franchising, moving chemists into remote rural areas and farms,” he said.

The approach has been building for more than a decade, he added.

The logic is straightforward: produce closer to consumers, cut transport costs and reduce exposure to border and maritime enforcement.

How it spread

Mexican-linked networks in Africa did not begin in South Africa.

Researchers trace early activity back to Nigeria, where local groups were producing meth with Mexican involvement by around 2016.

From there, the networks spread through East Africa, then south through Mozambique and Botswana, before reaching South Africa more recently.

For years, users on the streets spoke of “Mexican meth”, often assumed to be imported. That supply chain has now shifted inward.

“Now, basically, the cartel chemists are being sent here,” Rademeyer told Al Jazeera.

Analysts say multiple supply routes now feed the South African market, but the most significant change is the rise of local production.

Who looks the other way

Methamphetamine dominates parts of South Africa’s illicit drug market because cheaper drugs such as cocaine and heroin remain out of reach for many users, creating steady demand for a cheaper, highly addictive stimulant.

Crime expert Willem Els says demand is only part of the story.

“The main reason why manufacturing locally is lucrative to cartels is the local conditions that exist, where there is protection from corrupt police and politicians,” he told Al Jazeera.

“It is very lucrative. The cartels can make a lot of money because South African conditions result in undetected and protected operations.”

A separate commission of inquiry into law enforcement has heard testimony alleging deep corruption within policing structures, including missing drug consignments and suspected inside involvement in major cases.

One case under scrutiny involves 541 kilos of cocaine seized in 2021 and later stolen from a police facility, in what investigators believe was an inside job.

Former Interpol ambassador Andy Mashiale told Al Jazeera the problem is visible on the ground.

“There is no way in which police don’t know those labs,” he said. “So corruption plays a role.”

He said officers deployed to rural areas were often aware of suspicious activity but failed to act.

“What inspires the drug manufacturers or the drug cartels is the willingness of the police to enable the drug trade from happening,” he said.

South Africa’s elite Hawks unit says recent raids show progress in disrupting networks, while international partners, including the US Drug Enforcement Administration, have provided intelligence linking some suspects to the Sinaloa Cartel.

But investigators warn that the system behind the labs is resilient.

A frontier that keeps moving

US Africa Command officials have warned that Mexican cartels are now not only moving drugs through Africa, but also producing them on the continent.

For South Africa, the challenge is no longer just border control, it is institutional capacity, intelligence and corruption within the system meant to contain it.

Without deeper reform, analysts warn, the pattern is likely to continue: new farms, new labs, new chemists arriving quietly in rural provinces.

For the five men in Swartruggens, the question is immediate, whether they will be released.

For South Africa, the question is larger and more difficult: how to contain a trade that is no longer arriving at its borders, but taking root in the country.

Rademeyer says the structure is built to absorb disruption.

“It’s a game of whack-a-mole,” he told Al Jazeera. “You seize a meth lab here, you seize a meth lab there. They’ll spring up elsewhere.”

New Gloria Estefan musical tells story of Paraguay youths who turned trash into music

May 28 (UPI) — The story of the Cateura Recycled Instruments Orchestra, a Paraguayan music project born in a vulnerable community surrounding the Cateura landfill in Asunción, will reach U.S. stages this Saturday with the world premiere of Basura, a musical produced by Gloria Estefan at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta.

The production, inspired by the internationally recognized group led by Favio Chávez, tells how children and young people from low-income backgrounds learned music using instruments they built themselves from recycled materials recovered from the landfill.

“Taking the story of real people and of a country like Paraguay here in the United States are stories that are still waiting to be discovered, so it remains an important undertaking,” Chávez said in a recent interview with Paraguayan news outlet NPY.

“We have to understand that this musical is also a major risk for these producers,” Chávez said.

The musical will feature original music by Gloria Estefan and her daughter, Emily Estefan, as well as elements connected to Paraguayan culture, including phrases in the Guaraní language, one of the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in South America, and compositions in 6/8 rhythm, characteristic of Paraguayan polka.

“These people are placing Paraguay on one of the best and most important artistic stages in the world,” Chávez said.

The production is based on the story of the Cateura Orchestra, founded by Chávez in 2006 in an area marked by some of the country’s highest levels of poverty.

The community is home to nearly 150,000 people, and residents face extreme vulnerability, periodic flooding caused by overflows of the Paraguay River and a lack of basic services and adequate infrastructure.

The project uses recycled instruments that imitate violins, violas, cellos, double basses, guitars, saxophones, trumpets and percussion instruments, all made from waste recovered from the landfill.

“The world sends us trash, we send back music,” became one of the project’s emblematic phrases.

In addition to teaching music, the initiative seeks to provide educational and social opportunities to vulnerable youths.

According to Chávez, the program also includes scholarships and academic support so members can continue their studies and gain access to better job opportunities.

“We do not stop at simply bringing the kids onto a stage to receive applause, but we also support them so they study something,” he explained. “Most of them maybe music, but if not music, then another career that allows them to have a better future.”

The Cateura Orchestra gained international recognition following the 2015 documentary “Landfill Harmonic” and shared stages or collaborations with artists including Metallica, Megadeth, Stevie Wonder and Damon Albarn, leader of Gorillaz and Blur.

Metallica invited the Paraguayan group to open part of its South American tour in 2014, while members of Megadeth participated in project activities and presentations connected to the documentary.

Basura will run from May 30 through July 12 in Atlanta. The production is directed by Michael Greif, known for productions such as Rent and Dear Evan Hansen, with a script by Karen Zacarías and musical supervision by Alex Lacamoire, a Grammy and Tony Award winner for Hamilton.

Gloria Estefan said in previous interviews that she was deeply moved after watching Landfill Harmonic and decided to become personally involved in the project because of its message of resilience and social transformation through music.

A planning application to redevelop the area was first submitted in 2023.

Three years on, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority has approved a mixed-use tourism development by Ardnagal Estates.

Former proposals for the site included 14 holiday homes, 34 holiday lodges, and a 34-bedroom budget hotel.

Also included in the initial plans was a cafe, shop, a 40-bed bunkhouse, six motorhome pitches and 20 glamping pods as well as parking, composting toilets and shower block.

Another proposed feature was to revitalise the pier so that the public and community could access the loch.

Leisure on the site would include a play park that will add “family-friendly amenity for residents and visitors”.

Previous plans were to build a 130-bedroom hotel although it isn’t clear if this is part of the current plans.

Claire Chapman, the park authority’s planning and access committee chairwoman, said: “The approval of this long-standing derelict site’s redevelopment is a significant step forward in addressing what has been a blight on both the local community and the environment.

“The site has been identified in both the existing local development plan, which guides new development in the National Park, and in the community’s local place plan.”

Jodie first shot into the spotlight, tipped as the edgy alternative to glamour queen Jordan – now known as Katie Price – with the pair locked in a fierce rivalry as they battled to become Britain’s biggest pin-up.

More recently, it appeared Jodie had finally found peace after quitting showbiz to run an animal sanctuary in Essex.

The model devoted herself to rescuing animals and regularly shared videos introducing followers to meerkats, foxes, lemurs and marmosets living at the farm.

But pals say a string of devastating events slowly pushed her into isolation.

Now the former Celebrity Big Brother star is facing assault charges following an alleged incident at her Essex animal sanctuary – as pals tell The Sun of their fears for the once larger-than-life star.

One friend told The Sun: “After her mum died, something in her just switched off.

“She became far more isolated, and it was worrying.

“The irony is she spent years desperate to be photographed and talked about, but now the last thing she wants is to be the centre of attention.”

Jodie was left heartbroken in September 2020 when her beloved mum Kristina died following a battle with cancer.

The 47-year-old previously spoke of her anguish after claiming her mum was sent home from the hospital during the Covid pandemic despite battling an aggressive cancer.

Friends believe the loss deeply affected the star, who became increasingly withdrawn from public life in the years afterwards.

A pal said: “She only wanted to be around her animals – they are the only thing that brings her any joy.

“She felt safe around them, so she stayed in her own little bubble. “

Three years later, Jodie put her £1.5million Essex farm on the market following bitter tensions linked to the sanctuary and the animals she kept there.

While many local families regularly visited the sanctuary with their children, Jodie also became embroiled in rows with neighbours.

The TV personality previously went to court after attempting to adopt eight lemurs at the sanctuary.

She claimed Uttlesford Council’s refusal to grant a dangerous wild animal licence was unreasonable amid allegations she had previously taken a meerkat to the pub.

Our source shared: “She fell out terribly with her neighbours and absolutely dreaded seeing them – she became convinced they all hated her too, and it caused a lot of anxiety for her.

“Ultimately, she just wanted to live in peace. Having tensions in a place that is meant to be your sanctuary is just the worst.”

Then, in August 2024, tragedy struck when a fire tore through part of the farm and killed two of Jodie’s beloved marmosets.

An emotional Jodie later admitted she planned to “go far, far away” after the devastating blaze.

She said, “I don’t care about my house being destroyed; all I care about is losing two marmosets.”

A close pal explains: “The fire destroyed more than just the house, emotionally, that was the moment she completely unravelled.

“Behind all the glamour and bravado is somebody incredibly vulnerable and sensitive.”

Friends claim Jodie became increasingly isolated following the blaze and breakup of her most recent relationship.

They added: “Some of her friendships have fallen by the wayside because contact dwindled. Her older friends have been worried about her and did try and reach out, but not all of them heard back. She has a very small cirlce around her now. There was definitely some self-sabotage going on on Jodie’s behalf, although it’s not all on her.

“When Jodie is in a tough place, she does have a tendency to pull away, but her mates that have lost contact with her are still hopeful she will come back.”

Her last publicly confirmed partner was builder Mark, but the pair reportedly split in March 2024 after he struggled with the quiet lifestyle at the farm.

A pal said: “She does struggle with loneliness, but she also struggles to trust people, so it’s a bit of a catch-22.

“A lot of people in her life have badly scarred her, so it’s understandable she has her walls up a lot of the time.”

Last month, Jodie appeared in court accused of assaulting a man at the sanctuary. Essex Police confirmed a woman had been charged following an alleged incident at the site.

The former reality star was also accused of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause or provoke violence against the man and a woman.

Appearing at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court, she pleaded not guilty and was told a trial would take place in May 2027.

With a potential prison sentence looming, Jodie previously claimed neighbours had trespassed onto her land and filmed her animals before posting edited clips online to make them appear “skeletal”.

Speaking about one alleged confrontation, she said: “I’m scared to sleep in my own house. I’m scared to go out.”

Now, friends fear the once vivacious glamour model has completely retreated from the world she once dominated.

One pal told us: “It’s really sad what’s happened to Jodie, and we all really feel for her.

“She’s deleted her Instagram and now fully blocked the outside world from her life. It’s just her and her animals now.

“She lived this mad showbiz life for so long, it’s like she became addicted to the chaos and forgot what being normal was like.

“People think the fame disappeared overnight, but the truth is it was a slow-motion car crash.

“It’s been very sad to watch, but the one thing about Jodie is she is made of tough stuff and, like she has in the past, she’ll likely pick herself back up again.”

When approached by The Sun for comment, Jodie claimed the biggest ‘nightmare’ for her over the last few years, beyond the fire, is that she has been ‘harassed and stalked’ by her neighbours.

She accuses them of trying to bully her out of her home.

“I find it hard to trust people but the circle I have around me now are amazing and worth their weight in gold,” she says. “I trust them with my life. Everyone who comes to my home never wants to leave because it’s magical here.

“The animals are all so special and my life revolves around them. It’s a shame people like my neighbours are trying to ruin it for me. But good always wins over evil and karma is real. I will come out on top. I always do. Watch me.

“I’m living my best life and my dream life and these people are obsessing over me. That can’t be a fun way to live (being obsessed with another human you don’t even know). I just want to be left in peace to run my sanctuary with my true friends and family.”

‘Our dream family holiday turned to disaster after arriving at fenced-off resort’

A family’s long-awaited Easter getaway turned into a nightmare after travelling hundreds of miles only to find their booked resort shut and fenced off

After months of planning a relaxing family break abroad, one couple thought they had everything organised down to the last detail. But what awaited them at the end of a nine-hour journey across Europe was something they never could have prepared for.

The couple, who asked not to be identified due to the man’s occupation, had booked a stay at the Waterside Elegance Sky Pad at the Your Nature Resort in Belgium through Booking.com last October. Having previously visited the resort, they were eagerly anticipating their return with their two young sons in April, only to arrive and discover the site appeared to be closed.

Instead of checking into their accommodation and settling in for a long-awaited family holiday, the couple claim they were met by locked entrance gates, construction fencing and an eerily empty car park. Signs displayed outside the resort also appeared to indicate the site was no longer operating.

The Waterside Elegance Sky Pad is a luxury duplex cabin located within the 280-hectare Your Nature Eco Forest Resort in Antoing, Belgium. The £105 million resort has reportedly been fenced off and forced into bankruptcy, leaving holidaymakers stranded after it allegedly exceeded €15 million in losses, according to Forbes.

In a lengthy Reddit post, the man explained how the family’s entire trip had been carefully planned around the needs of their children, including their eldest son who is autistic and non-verbal. But after arriving at the resort entrance and, by chance, speaking with a site manager, the couple claim they were informed the resort had gone into administration months earlier in October.

This is despite Booking.com allegedly repeatedly reassuring the family their holiday would go ahead as planned, with emails recognising the reservation remained valid. The Reddit post also claims the company accepted tourism tax payments and issued a check-in voucher just weeks before the family travelled to Belgium.

“If you think your holiday is secure because you have a confirmed booking voucher, think again,” he warned.

Speaking to The Mirror, the man detailed how the family were left scrambling after the revelation, with hundreds of pounds spent on Le Shuttle crossings, fuel, food and overnight accommodation in France. He also claimed Booking.com later suggested alternative accommodation options, though the family considered them unsuitable.

Booking.com is understood to have refunded the original accommodation costs, though disputes between the two parties are said to remain ongoing.

The family are seeking compensation for more than £400 in additional travel expenses incurred during the ordeal. They claim the online travel agency is refusing to accept liability, despite allegedly issuing a separate payment of 150 EUR which they say they have refused to accept.

In the Reddit post, the man referenced provisions within the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, arguing the family relied on written assurances when booking non-refundable travel arrangements. However, no court has ruled on the claims and Booking.com disputes wrongdoing.

A Booking.com spokesperson told The Mirror: “We’re sorry to hear about this customer’s experience. When a property chooses to list on Booking.com they must agree to our terms and conditions, which includes keeping their room availability up to date.

“If an accommodation partner wants to end their agreement or remove their listing, we have simple processes and clear guidance to help them do this. We can confirm this property is currently closed on our platform, and that we’re also in touch with the customer to offer support.”

Consumer experts regularly advise travellers to retain booking confirmations, receipts and written correspondence when arranging holidays online. According to Citizens Advice, customers may have rights if services are not provided as described, although compensation outcomes can vary depending on individual circumstances and booking terms.

P&O Cruises reminds passengers of important rule or risk being ‘turned away’

It comes as a passenger claims they were ‘turned away’ on board

P&O Cruises is reminding passengers about a particular item of clothing that is ‘not allowed’ on board under specific circumstances. The cruise line issued the guidance in a recent social media post after a passenger claimed they were ‘turned away’.

On X, a user called Duncan wrote: “@Pandocruises describe ‘formal’. Turned away from one restaurant the other day wearing formal shorts, smart tailored shirt. Dye it showing sine ‘leg’. However, seen plenty of women wearing skirts much shorter than my shorts been welcomed in!”

P&O Cruises responded: “Hi Duncan, smart shorts are not permitted in certain restaurants on board. A suit with jacket and tie is required on formal nights in the main restaurant and other venues.”

On P&O Cruises’ website, there is extensive information regarding the cruise line’s dress code policy, reports the Liverpool Echo. It states: “While we encourage you to relax and enjoy your holiday, we do ask that you adhere to a smart casual dress code in our public areas and restaurants.”

In a key notice to passengers, P&O Cruises confirms that tailored shorts cannot be worn on Black Tie or Celebration Nights, with the exception of the buffet. It adds: “On evening casual nights tailored shorts can be wore in the buffet, The Beach House, and The Glass House, as well as 6th Street Diner, The Olive Grove and The Keel and Cow on Arvia and Iona.” Further guidance states: “Denim, including dark denim, isn’t allowed on Black Tie and Celebration Nights, except in venues with an Evening Casual dress code.”

For daytime wear, P&O Cruises states: “Feel free to wear your favourite holiday attire, such as shorts, T-shirts, and sundresses, or your typical winter clothing on one of our colder holidays. However, please remember to wear shoes when you’re not by the pool. We also ask that there is no pool wear in the ship’s lounges, inside bars, restaurants or reception.”

Regarding evening attire, the cruise operator noted: “Our dress code varies depending on the night. You can find details of each evening’s dress code in your daily Horizon found in your cabin, or on My P&O Cruises under the ‘Your Itinerary’ section before you sail.”

P&O Cruises operates two principal dress codes: ‘Evening Casual’ and ‘Black Tie’. Evening Casual calls for ‘smart casual attire’, encompassing trousers, smart dark denim, polo shirts, dresses, and skirts.

The Black Tie dress code is reserved for more formal occasions, where passengers are encouraged to “dress to impress”. The cruise line elaborates: “Gentlemen, a dinner jacket or tuxedo is ideal, but a dark suit and tie is also acceptable. Ladies, feel free to wear your favourite evening gown or cocktail dress.”

Passengers are also encouraged to adhere to the dress code for celebration nights, which P&O Cruises describes as special evenings on board where guests can enjoy a more formal dining experience and entertainment. “These events involve a higher level of dress code (black tie) and a more elaborate menu. It’s a chance to dress up, savour delicious food, and enjoy the ambience of a special occasion”, it says.

During celebration nights, most venues will operate a dress code, though some will permit a more relaxed attire for those who prefer it. Passengers can discover which venues are exempt from dress codes in their daily Horizon.

When visiting destinations on excursions, P&O Cruises advises comfortable walking shoes and clothing suited to the climate and culture of the places being visited. “Some cultures have specific dress codes, particularly for places of worship. Please respect local customs and dress modestly when visiting religious sites,” it adds.

For religious passengers, the cruise line confirms that customers are welcome to wear national or religious dress on board. “If you wear a headdress, depending on the amount of your face it covers, you may be asked to unveil for a security photo at check-in and when passing through security check points ashore and on board during your holiday”, it says.

However, certain items of national dress, such as ceremonial blades and swords, including Skean Dhus and Kirpans, are not allowed on board. Passengers can consult the list of prohibited items for further details.

P&O Cruises states that fancy dress, novelty clothing or outfits featuring any inappropriate or offensive language or imagery are banned on board. “We reserve the right to deny embarkation to guests who are inappropriately dressed”, the cruise line states. Old RAF Sea King helicopters turned into £130 a night glamping pods – and they are fully booked

Inside, you will find a double bed, bunk beds, and a kitchen equipped with a microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge

Two retired RAF helicopters have been transformed into stunning glamping pods – and they are already fully booked. The yellow Sea King aircrafts have found their forever homes being stationed at North Yorkshire Water Park, at Wykeham Lakes, near Scarborough., after long careers saving lives across the UK.

They now add to a believed four other Sea Kings which have been transformed into liveable accommodation in Britain. Their specialist interiors have been ripped out and replaced with a double bed, bunk beds, and a kitchen, equipped with a microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge.

Some parts of the cockpit – including the controls and switches – are still intact, but stunning images show how it has been reworked into a dining area.

Its sliding door acts as the main access point and when opened leads onto a gravel landing pad, with a picnic bench. The water park says the helicopters offer a “unique and “memorable” stay which were designed for couples, families to enjoy.

The helicopters were originally built for the RAF for Search and Rescue, according to North Yorkshire Water Park.

Both the ZE369 and XZ589 offered decades of service at the forefront of life-saving missions across the UK, carrying out daring rescues in all weather conditions.

The pods were available to be booked from Friday, May 1 – the first four weeks are fully booked, according to Airbnb. Prices start at £130 a night.

James Whitehead, operations manager at North Yorkshire Water Park: “We are incredibly excited to welcome the new Sea King helicopter glamping pods to our stay on-site offering.

“Both helicopters have an extraordinary history, having spent decades carrying out life-saving search and rescue missions across the UK.

“It was important to us that the original character and charm is preserved as much as possible while making them a cosy place to relax after a day of fun.”

North Yorkshire Water Park is one of the UK’s largest spanning a huge 250 acres. The outdoor adventure destination features massive inflatable aqua parks, lakes for kayaking, paddleboarding, and open-water swimming.

Filming is underway for The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, but producers are facing unexpected ‘disruption’

The Summer I Turned Pretty producers have issued a two-word warning to fans after fearing for the safety of cast members.

It’s been less than a year since the final episode of the cherished romantic drama landed on Prime Video. Just as viewers thought the Fisher love triangle had reached its conclusion, the streaming service delivered the unexpected news that the franchise would wrap up with a feature-length film.

Production officially began on April 27 in Wilmington, North Carolina, the identical setting used for the previous three series. However, with merely one week of shooting underway, the show’s makers have squashed fans’ wishes to catch a glimpse behind the curtain of the production process.

Within the short filming period, crowds of viewers have already assembled at the shooting locations, catching sight of the leading cast members – Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno – as they slip back into character during boat scenes and intense exchanges, reports the Mirror US.

Showrunners have evidently had their fill and requested supporters not to attend the set or publicise filming whereabouts. On social media, the programme’s creators posted footage of the message “Privacy Please,” being inscribed into sand by production staff.

Alongside the seaside footage, they posted: “We love the excitement, but sharing locations and visiting set disrupts filming and creates real safety concerns for our cast and crew.

“We’re working hard to create a protected bubble to make the best movie possible. Please help us protect the magic of Cousins until it’s ready to be shared.”

Supporters rushed to the comments section with apologies, with one writing: “Sorry girl we got excited.”

Amazon replied to the fan: “Just as excited as you and we want the wait to be worth it. We appreciate everyone who keeps it calm for our cast and crew!”

Devotees have been eagerly awaiting a peek at production since the final episode broadcast on September 17. The series concluded with Lola’s character Belly and Christopher’s Conrad heading back to his Cousins Beach property as a couple.

The season initially kicked off with Belly starting university while in a relationship with Conrad’s brother Jeremiah, played by Gavin. Throughout the episodes, Belly discovers her then-partner had been unfaithful, sparking a brief split which ultimately culminates in an engagement.

On the eve of Belly and Jeremiah’s nuptials, Conrad admits he still harbours feelings for her years after they were together.

Consumed by conflicting emotions, Belly flees the country mere hours before she was due to marry his brother. She subsequently spends several months residing in Paris, before an unexpected guest arrives: Conrad.

Following a brief reunion in the French capital on her birthday, old feelings are reignited and the pair decide to give their romance another chance.

Belly remains in Paris before ultimately heading back to Cousins Beach with Conrad, where the couple are due to tie the knot — provided the film stays true to the epilogue of author Jenny Han’s final instalment in the series, We’ll Always Have Summer.

The Summer I Turned Pretty movie is anticipated to be released in 2027. The series is streaming now on Prime Video.

Ex-Formula One driver turned Paralympic champion Alex Zanardi dies aged 59 | Motorsports News

Zanardi, who lost his legs in a racing crash, was credited with helping transform the perception of disability in Italy.

Alex Zanardi, the Italian Formula One driver who became a Paralympic cycling champion after losing both legs in an accident, has died aged 59, his family announced.

Zanardi, one of his country’s most loved and respected sportsmen, who was credited with helping transform the perception of disability in Italy, died on Friday evening.

In a statement issued on Saturday through the charity he founded, Obiettivo3, his family said he died “suddenly”, but also “peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family and friends”.

“The family would like to express ⁠their heartfelt thanks to all those who are showing their support at this time and ⁠asks that their grief and privacy be ⁠respected during this period of mourning.”

Zanardi’s death comes six years after the four-time Paralympic gold medal winner suffered a second horror crash in June 2020, when his handbike crashed into an oncoming truck during a race in Tuscany.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed Zanardi as “a great champion and an extraordinary man, capable of turning every trial of life into a lesson in courage, strength and dignity”.

Cordiano Dagnoni, head of the Italian Cycling Federation, said he “transformed the culture of our country, bringing joy and happiness to those fortunate enough to know him, and hope to so many in Italy and around the world”.

He said there would be a minute’s silence observed at this weekend’s races in tribute to the athlete.

Zanardi raced for Jordan, Minardi and Lotus in F1 in the early 1990s before switching to the CART championship in the United States where he was series champion in 1997 and 1998.

He returned to F1 with Williams in 1999 before heading back to CART.

Zanardi almost died in a horrific accident in 2001 at the Lausitzring track in Germany, after which he had both legs amputated.

His car had stalled in the middle of the track after a spin and was struck by another car at a speed of more than 300km/h (186mph).

Yet he went on to become one of the best-known figures in Paralympic sports, winning two gold medals at the 2012 London Games and two more in Rio de Janeiro, four years later.

In June 2020, he was involved in another terrible accident, this time in Tuscany. He suffered serious head injuries and only returned home 18 months later.

Zanardi, born in Bologna on October 23, 1966, leaves his wife Daniela and son Niccolo.

Japan: Passive Anchor Turned Capital Powerhouse

Japan reemerges as global finance hub amid reforms, rising yields.

Japan is reasserting itself in global finance, shedding its long-standing image as a passive anchor of ultra-low rates. Nowadays, it’s moving back toward the center of international capital flows.

Three reinforcing dynamics are driving this transition: monetary normalization, sustained corporate governance reform and a renewed wave of foreign investor interest.

The gradual end of negative yields marks a structural turning point. As the gap between Japanese and US interest rates narrows, yields on long-term Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) are rising. This is prompting a recalibration of global asset allocation strategies. This evolution is occurring alongside a broader regional reassessment, as geopolitical uncertainty encourages investors to rebalance exposure across Asia.

At the same time, reforms led by the Tokyo Stock Exchange are reshaping corporate behavior. A stronger emphasis on capital efficiency, shareholder returns and transparency has supported equity market performance and attracted nonresident inflows. Analysts expect fiscal support and a moderately reflationary environment to underpin earnings growth through 2026.

An On-The-Ground View

“The reforms have certainly been successful, but Japan’s political stability and robust regulations are also drawing attention to Tokyo,” says Tokio Morita, Executive Director of FinCity.Tokyo.

Morita notes growing interest in programs that help asset managers and fintech firms establish local operations, as well as initiatives that have supported around 15 foreign entrants and improved global communications between more than 60 Japanese firms and overseas investors.

This renewed momentum comes amid a fragile global backdrop. Total global debt reached $348 trillion in 2025. Yet, Japan’s debt-to-GDP ratio has edged down modestly relative to peers, even as headline public debt remains elevated. Emerging markets, by contrast, face more than $9 trillion in refinancing needs in 2026. This reinforces Japan’s role as a comparatively stable capital provider. As major central banks, including the Fed and the ECB, move deeper into easing cycles, Japan’s more differentiated policy path underscores its re-emergence as an independent force.

Tokyo is once again positioning itself as a market global investors cannot afford to overlook.

UK passport appearance rules that risk passengers being turned away if broken

People could find themselves unable to travel this summer if they don’t spot these problems

Aside from your plane ticket, your passport is one of the most important documents you need to travel. But Brits need to make sure their passport’s appearance doesn’t put an end to holidays before they even start.

With fuel disruptions and other global events making the thought of holidays a bit stressful, people need to make sure their passports are valid and free of any additional issues that could prevent them from heading to their destination. These could seem minor, but airport security won’t take chances, and Brits could be out of pocket.

Usually, the main concern for people jetting off on holiday is ensuring they have enough valid months left on their passport. However, minor tears and water damage that seem like small issues may render a passport invalid in the eyes of border authorities – regardless of how long it has left to expire.

According to the GOV.UK website, you must replace a damaged passport immediately. This can typically take three weeks, but it can sometimes be longer, with waits of up to six weeks, so anyone with plans coming up soon should act fast.

What kind of damage will make a passport invalid?

The GOV.UK website lists all of the reasons that could render a passport invalid for travel. These include:

  • when the personal details or observation page are unreadable
  • laminate peeling or lifting away from the personal details page
  • unreadable security details
  • missing or detached pages
  • where the front, back or personal details page has been cut
  • damage or discolouration to any part of the passport caused, for example, by water/chemical/ink spills or tears/rips/bite marks

People who have the blue e-Passport may be found invalid for travel if the perforated passport numbers have been torn or the personal details page is torn, damaged, or cracked. People could also be rejected from passport checks if their passport has a chip or antenna that shows through the endpaper on the back cover of a burgundy e-Passport or the personal details page of a blue e-Passport

Damage that does not need an explanation and won’t render a passport invalid for travel includes:

  • any damage that is not on the personal details or observation pages
  • any visas, vignettes or immigration stamps are unaffected by the damage (Passport officers must be happy there are no security features or details missing)
  • any damage or discolouration to the passport cover and blank visa pages is caused by water/chemical/ink spills/tears/rips/burning/bite marks/writing or drawings

To replace a damaged passport, Brits can apply online here to be processed as quickly as possible. It costs £102 for adults, and customers will need a digital photo and a credit/debit card. GOV.UK added: “You’ll need to ask someone to confirm your identity online if you’re replacing a lost or stolen passport.”

People with travel plans that are sooner than the typical three-week turnaround may apply for a fast-track service at a premium cost. This usually results in an appointment at the Passport Office within a week, with documents often being issued the next day.

This express service comes at an added cost compared to the normal wait time and process. It costs £192 for an adult passport (or £206 for a 54-page frequent traveller passport).

Meet the Mexican revolutionary turned L.A. Times columnist

Ninety-five years ago next month, Aurelio Manrique Jr. landed a job as a mild-mannered L.A. Times columnist. But the resume this native of the central Mexico state of San Luis Potosí brought to the paper was that of a firebrand.

Medical student turned political prisoner. Fought in the Mexican Revolution. Governor of his home state. Trusted advisor of general-turned-president Álvaro Obregón. Founder of a left-wing political party. Mexican legislator. He even took to the floor of Mexico’s congress to denounce former president Plutarco Elías Calles as a farsante — a phony — and then pull a gun on a rival who took issue with his vitriol.

Tall, with round wire glasses and a shock of black hair that was the inverse of his Moses-like beard, Manrique cut an exciting figure in Latino L.A. when he arrived as a political exile in 1929 after the so-called Escobar rebellion, which was an attempt to overthrow the Mexican government. A Oct. 28, 1929 Times dispatch noted that “it is not uncommon to find among the shabby, shuffling street venders [sic] of Sonoratown” former Mexican bigwigs “offering sweetmeats and trinkets from trays” in an effort to survive.

Finding a home in L.A.

They, like so many other political refugees before and since, made L.A. a home but also a place to fight for the freedom of their homeland.

Manrique, on the other hand, was hailed as the “intellectual head” of his fellow Mexican refugee politicos and an “accomplished linguist” who spoke Spanish, English, French and German.

“He stands in my memory as a pillar of fire because, at all times, he has never been afraid to do or say what he considered to be right, regardless of his own personal or political fate,” an admirer would recall decades later in the Virginia Quarterly Review.

The revolutionary found welcome audiences across the Southland with lectures and Spanish-language radio show appearances to talk about what was going on in his home country. He participated in Mexican Independence Day and Cinco de Mayo festivities and even found work in Hollywood films as everything from a British lord to an Arab sheikh.

But reputation doesn’t pay the bills, so Manrique also offered translation and interpreter services from a small Bunker Hill office. He also held Spanish-language classes twice a week at the L.A. Central Library. Soon after, The Times — a paper that back then loathed leftists of all stripes — hired Manrique as a columnist in May 1931. He was to be in charge of its daily Spanish-language roundup of world and local events, which the paper had regularly published since 1922.

The revolutionary plays a more reserved role

I wish I could say that Manrique used his platform to inveigh against the mass roundups of Mexican Americans that kicked off that year and that would lead to the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of Mexican Americans, citizens and not, during the 1930s. Or that Manrique taught his Times bosses that Latinos were more than domestic help or a societal scourge. Or that he deserves a spot in the pantheon of legendary Times metro columnists like Jack Smith, Ruben Salazar and Steve Lopez.

Alas, it was not to be.

The daily columna was just a roundup of wire stories published in Spanish, part of The Times’ effort to teach the language of Cervantes to those interested. Every Monday, the 40-year-old Manrique also wrote Platicas de Los Lunes [Monday Lessons], a place for the professor to teach new words to readers via translations, poems and sample sentences.

Manrique’s last byline was April 25, 1932. In the hundreds of columnas he wrote for us, I found nothing even remotely hinting at the progressive lion that Mexicans in Southern California knew him as. But in an era in which Latino visibility in Anglo Southern California was nonexistent when it wasn’t heavily stereotyped, Manriquez’s brief tenure at The Times was an important step for future Latino writers at the paper, all of us whom owe a debt to the man.

He returned to Mexico in early 1933 after President Abelardo L. Rodríguez announced amnesty for him and other exiles. The former revolutionary spent the rest of his life working for the Mexican government, most notably as ambassador to Scandinavian countries from 1946 to 1956.

In 1962, the retired Manrique returned to his old L.A. stomping grounds one final time five years before his death for a lecture at the Alexandria Hotel.

“He finds Los Angeles completely changed,” La Opinión reported, “and told us, with a tone of barely concealed sadness, that many of those who knew him had disappeared.”

The fate of all Angelenos, alas.
