Throughout the 1970s, the cherished pier fell into disrepair, prompting the council to announce plans to shut it down in 1980. But it wasn’t long before residents rallied together with passionate protests to save their treasured landmark, and by 1983, restoration work was approved.

A revitalised pier, featuring a modernised railway system, welcomed visitors once more in 1986, though troubles for the structure weren’t quite over.

Fires in both 1995 and 2005 wreaked havoc on the pier’s timber planking and decking, necessitating multiple rounds of reconstruction.

There’s also a museum situated along the pier offering deeper insight into Southend Pier’s 200-year story, covering everything from the calamities to the entertainment and its wartime contribution.

Featuring original artefacts from the early days, old penny slot machines and a simulated train driver experience, there’s plenty to keep visitors entertained.

Families can now revel in this remarkable slice of British seaside heritage, enjoying rides, stalls, food and drink while taking a leisurely stroll out towards the sea.

For those who’d rather not walk, they can jump aboard the train, which runs along the pier every half hour.

One visitor took to TripAdvisor to share: “We were lazy and took the train instead of walking. Stepping on to the train is like stepping back in time. The train was from a different era, which was interesting.

“It didn’t go too fast, but we just didn’t feel like walking. It was cute to watch children who were walking with their parents try to race the train. The pier is very pleasant even on a cold day.”

Visiting

Perhaps the biggest draw of a trip to Southend Pier is just how affordable it is. Entry currently costs adults £3.10, while children and concessions pay £2.10.

For a little extra, families can combine pier entry with unlimited train journeys for as little as £19.50 with a full family ticket.

Those looking to swap the amusements for a peaceful day by the water might want to consider a fishing pass. Locals can turn up with all their gear and enjoy a full day’s fishing, provided they stick to the pier’s guidelines.

One visitor shared: “We decided to walk the pier, and the driver of the train waved each time he passed. Ice cream was lovely and views amazing. Worth the 1.3 miles there and back.”

Another happy visitor added: “Visited here recently with friends. A lovely long pier that’s perfect for a nice walk from the coast or a train ride if you prefer!

“It’s ticketed and does cost a few pounds to enter, but it was worth it personally, as I’ve never seen or experienced such a long pier before!”

The pier welcomes visitors daily between 10:15am and 5pm, with last entry permitted one hour before closing time.

Spring is a great time to go on holiday, but it does come with a certain level of risk

Spring makes for a brilliant time to get away, though it does carry a certain element of unpredictability. The weather during the spring months can be rather capricious and while some holidaymakers don’t mind a spot of rain, others prefer to dodge it wherever possible.

According to the Met Office, Britain experiences rainfall on between 170 and 180 days annually on average – that’s nearly every other day. In a bid to escape the drizzle, Parkdean Resorts has examined Met Office data, geographical details and shelter options to identify the most rain-proof beaches across the nation. Each beach was then assigned a ‘rain-proof’ rating out of 100.

Topping the list is Bournemouth on the Dorset coastline, achieving a score of 95. The seafront spans seven miles, making it the ideal location for natural protection from showers, with plenty of indoor amenities to duck into when the heavens open, reports the Express.

This seaside spot is hugely popular with British holidaymakers, who rave about its stunning golden sands, the pier and famous cliffs. Boasting a 4.5 star rating on TripAdvisor, it’s a magnet for visitors.

One reviewer wrote on TripAdvisor: “The beach at Bournemouth is a timeless slice of the British seaside. Stretching seven miles, its soft sands evoke memories of fresh sea air, melting ’99’ flakes, and arcades. From the iconic cliff lifts to the vibrant Lower Gardens, it remains a haven of nostalgia.

“Whether tracing the shoreline or watching the sunset, it’s a place where the simple joys of summer never truly fade. Always plenty to do and places to go nearby.” Another wrote: “Bournemouth Beach is stunning – soft golden sand, clean water, and a lovely promenade with great views. The beach was well-maintained, and there were plenty of facilities nearby. Perfect for a relaxing day out, whether you’re swimming, sunbathing, or just strolling along the shore.”

The south coast commands the rankings, so for a seaside escape unlikely to be marred by downpours, consider seeking out a location somewhere along Devon or Dorset’s coastline.

The north coast of Wales also proves remarkably sheltered, with two destinations featuring in the top 10.

Practitioner psychologist Ravi Gill discussed the significance of heading outdoors with Parkdean Resorts – regardless of the conditions.

She said: “A holiday isn’t ruined by rain. It’s shaped by how we respond to it. Let go of perfection: shift your mindset from ‘Perfect weather’ to ‘Flexible fun’ – disappointment often comes from a mismatch between expectation and reality.

“If we mentally attach the holiday to blue skies, anything else feels like a loss. Instead, frame the trip around experiences rather than weather, using phrases like ‘we’re going to explore, we’re going to slow down and rest’.”

Simply because there’s rainfall doesn’t mean your getaway has to be ruined and actually, Ravi suggested it could even enhance it.

She explained: “We forget rest doesn’t need sunshine. In fact, rain can help slower, indoor moments often allow deeper conversations, board game evenings or afternoon naps – genuine nervous system down-regulation.”

A study by Canstar Travel Insurance analysed passenger reviews and meals from the world’s top 100 airlines, concluding that Greek carrier AEGEAN serves up the finest food, earning an impressive score of 7.82 out of 10.

AEGEAN treats passengers to authentic Greek cuisine and regionally inspired dishes, while in business class, meals are lovingly prepared by acclaimed Greek chefs and sommeliers. The airline’s culinary philosophy is rooted in the concept of filema, which champions “love and kindness through food”. On Tripadvisor, one traveller who recently flew with Aegean wrote: “Aegean Airlines is simply amazing! The level of service is very high, and it is incredibly easy to reach their call centre whenever you need help or extra information. On board, they offer food and drinks, and everything was delicious.”

A second passenger added: “I have used British, Virgin, easyJet, Ryanair… but no one is better, always on time and sometimes even earlier at the destination than Aegean Airlines.

“Although I’m Italian, I use it instead of Alitalia when I’m travelling to my country. Warm and delicious food and choices of wines and a particular menu for any kind of dietary or religious needs.”

Chester Zoo, located in Cheshire, has been crowned the UK’s best-rated zoo on Tripadvisor. The park, which is home to 30,000 animals and 500 species, topped the national rankings based on visitor reviews, boasting an impressive 11,666 excellent ratings.

Chester Zoo also featured amongst Europe’s top 10 zoos and aquariums for 2026. The park recently underwent an expansion with the opening of Heart of Africa, the largest zoo habitat ever created in the UK, housing 57 iconic African species. Last year, the zoo launched The Reserve, a premium safari experience giving guests the opportunity to spend the night in one of 51 luxury African-themed lodges.

One of the most recent reviews on Tripadvisor says: “Absolutely incredible zoo! Best I’ve ever been to! All the animals look so happy and everything is so clean and well looked after. We stayed in one of the lakeside lodges and went to the zoo over two days as it is massive because all of the enclosures are very spacious. All the staff were happy, helpful, and polite; the food was good. The whole place just had a very positive vibe. Would 1,000% recommend.”

Another visitor told the Express: “It’s a very nice zoo, great for a day trip. We saw a baby rhino when we went, which was awesome. We’ll be back!”

The rock positioned in the centre of the beach has a peculiar shape and seems a rather strange place to have emerged from the ground. But this is no ordinary rock – it is more famously known as Carreg Bica, meaning Bica’s rock.

Legend has it that this mysterious rock once belonged to a giant named Bica, who resided nearby in Ceredigion. As the story goes, he suffered from an agonisingly painful toothache and was ultimately left with no option but to wrench his tooth out.

He tore it from his mouth and flung it onto the sand, where it has remained for countless ages, captured in photographs throughout history. It serves as a charming local landmark, and at low tide it can be spotted from both beaches.

One visitor described it as a “great day out”, writing on TripAdvisor: “Gorgeous cove with a sandy beach and excellent division for those with dogs. Parked in the top FREE car park and a 15 min walk down. Fabulous cafe with homemade ice cream right on the shore.”

Another shared: “What a find and dog-friendly too! An amazing beach and a real gem. A few good well-priced cafes and a lovely pub all right on the beach.

“Didn’t do park and ride as was able to park by the beach (had to pay, but worth the money, especially as it has an elderly relative, so easy access). Would highly recommend for all ages.”

It’s important to note, however, that numerous reviewers on the platform have lodged serious complaints about the beachside car park.

Many claim to have been “scammed”, receiving parking fines of £100 which have “spoilt” what is otherwise an apparently stunning location.

To sidestep this issue, seeking alternative public parking would be advisable, or better still, there’s a coastal path stretching along the entire area, connecting other nearby beaches to those in Llangrannog village.

For instance, by beginning your day at Tresaith Beach, you can weave a peaceful coastal walk into your plans to reach this spectacular cove while avoiding the reported car park mayhem.

Upon arrival, Llangrannog Beach offers several places to grab an ice cream, enjoy a refreshing drink or have a bite to eat. The Beach Hut, Tafell and The Ship are amongst the establishments tucked along this charming stretch of the stunning coastline.

THE world’s best theme parks have been revealed by Tripadvisor – and one on the English coastline made the cut.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which dates back to 1898, just squeezed into 10th place.

The 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards look at both the quality and quantity of reviews, from February 1, 2025 to January 31, 2026.

Laurel Greatrix, chief communications officer at TripAdvisor Group, said: “There’s a clear theme in this year’s winners: they bring out what makes a destination unique.”

It has won a number of awards, with theme park website Blooloop also praising it: “What makes the Pleasure Beach of today unique among British parks is its surviving collection of vintage rides. Some of these are the last remaining types of their kind worldwide.”

The Blackpool theme park is even set to open an exciting new £8million ride, a gyro-swing called Aviktas which will be the tallest of its kind in the UK.

A beautiful island beach has been named the best in the world by TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards. It’s described by visitors as relaxing and a perfect place to unwind, with one commenting that it’s not crowded despite its renown.

TripAdvisor’s Best of the Best Beaches list features several stunning locations across the globe, but Isla de la Pasión in Cozumel, Mexico made it to the very top of the selection. The island is fringed by the Caribbean Sea and nestled between the USA and the South American continent.

The beach on the island is esteemed for clear turquoise water and fine golden sands.

However, Viator, a TripAdvisor travel company, warns visitors to bring plenty of bug spray to this stunning location due to sand flies and mosquitoes being rife there. Sand flies are “especially active” at dawn and dusk.

Other travellers pointed out that visitors to this remote spot should wear strong bug spray with sand fly and mosquito bites blighting the experience for some tourists, although thousands report having a wonderful time.

However, they also pointed out that it is not a freely accessible public beach. It is necessary to purchase a day pass or hire an organised tour to this paradisal island.

Colourful coral reefs can be discovered by snorkelling at this popular tourist destination described as a “great island, not crowded at all”, but the island is private and can only be explored via an organised excursion.

One reviewer described the experience of visiting this peaceful place on TripAdvisor, writing that it’s “an oasis” accessible only by boat.

They added: “For me, as for most of those who see it, it’s a scenario that seems out of a postcard. Isla Pasión is on an isolated island in the Caribbean and can only be accessed through boat tours, usually departing from Cozumel.”

“I want to go back,” the reviewer continued, describing shallow “crystal clear waters, protected coral reefs and an extensive band of white sand”.

Viator, which offers Isla Pasión tours, advised that sun protection is essential, especially if you’re travelling on an open-top boat.

The best time to go to Isla Pasión is during sunny and dry weather from January to April to experience “crystal-clear water” at Cozumel snorkelling spots such as Isla Pasión, Viator explained, which is also a great time to visit to spot marine wildlife.

Isla Pasión has been praised for being a perfect location for families with entertainment at hand for children and young people.

One TripAdvisor reviewer described their trip to Isla Pasión, writing: “Our family had a wonderful time. The crew was amazing. Everyone was very friendly. There were a lot of fun activities for the kids. Also, the food and drinks were great.”

This year, as more and more reviews gathered on the world-famous site, Edinburgh‘s Royal Yacht Britannia has been named the number one attraction in the world.

The ship draws in visitors from all over the world thanks to its grandeur and history as the former floating palace and temporary home to the royals. Queen Elizabeth II travelled for over 44 years on the ship, clocking up over a million miles.

The royal yacht served as the ideal residence for the royals, whether it was utilised for state visits, official receptions, royal honeymoons or simple family holiday escapes.

A recent visitor that explored the docked ship, wrote: “Staff are exceptional, from entering the royal yacht to the shop. The tour is informative, brilliant and relaxed. We would 109% recommend it. Also, a must-do is to take your time, take lots of pictures, and definitely visit the tea room.”

The sixth-best attraction in the world

Making Edinburgh the place to be for culture, history and all-round fun things to do is another attraction based in the capital city that earned its rightful place on TripAdvisor’s worldwide attraction list.

At an admirable number six, ranking itself above the likes of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, is The Real Mary King’s Close.

In the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, beneath the bustling street known as the ‘Royal Mile’, is an attraction bursting with history and stories. The underground experience showcases a warren of hidden roads where people once lived, worked and died.

According to TripAdvisor, the site lay forgotten and abandoned for centuries before opening up for the public to discover. Reviews on the site claim that it’s a “fantastic experience”, while somebody wrote: “Absolutely brilliant, the tour was informative and most importantly fun.”

Scotland’s capital is home to a breathtaking castle, charming cobbled streets, quirky bookshops and endless cafes, but it’s these experiences that seem to stand out amongst them all.
