Nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this tranquil haven is a hit with walkers, birdwatchers, watersport enthusiasts, and families seeking a peaceful retreat to a sandy sanctuary.

However, when the tide rolls in, the sea engulfs the causeway, leaving island visitors with the option of returning to shore by sea tractor or boat, reports the Express.

The beach also draws in sports lovers, offering prime conditions for windsurfing and paddleboarding. With amenities such as a cafe, public toilets, and parking available, it’s no wonder the beach is a family favourite too.

Canines are permitted on the main stretch of sand from October through to May, whilst they can frolic on the beach west of the causeway throughout the entire year.

For those who fancy a stroll, numerous coastal rambles begin near the shoreline and provide breathtaking vistas of the dramatic cliffs and rugged coastline.

One holidaymaker penned on TripAdvisor : “Bigbury-on-Sea is a bit of a jackpot if you’re after a dog-friendly beach with food and drink options within stumbling distance.”

Another commented: “My happy place. When the sun is shining this is great. Good sand, great views, good surf, good walk options, great beach barista coffee, and weirdly now has a sauna.”

A third visitor posted: “It’s a dog friend beach with amazing walks, stunning views and a fantastic coffee van which is much needed after a session in the wonderful waves for surfing!”.

Someone else shared: “Such an amazing beach, great views, went across onto the island and the views were amazing from the top.A great day out and also good for dogs because of the lovely sandy beach.”

Tucked away and untouched by mass tourism, this remote island provides the perfect retreat for anyone wanting to reconnect with nature and breathe in the crisp coastal air.

Rathlin Island boasts an incredible array of wildlife, making it an idyllic destination in Northern Ireland for birdwatching and walking, with a tranquillity that only a community of just 150 residents could provide. And yet, they share their home with tens of thousands of seabirds.

The Rathlin Seabird Centre provides a magnificent vantage point to watch the delightful antics of puffins, razorbills and kittiwakes in their natural surroundings. Additionally, seals are frequently spotted basking on the rocks, whilst Irish hares and mink can be seen wandering across the terrain.

One visitor shared their experience on TripAdvisor, saying: “The beautiful and peaceful place. Very little tourism, but it’s not needed; everything is basic, normal everyday life. It’s so simple just to walk the island.

“We have done this on several occasions and walk to each lighthouse. I recommend getting the bus to the bird sanctuary, as it’s quite a walk and very hilly. The scenery is like you will never have seen before.”, reports Belfast Live.

Thanks to the distinctive shape of this small island, it features three stunning lighthouses, each with its own character. Next to the seabird centre stands the West Lighthouse, renowned for being Ireland’s only upside-down lighthouse and an essential stop on any visit.

The East Lighthouse, Rathlin’s oldest, stands tall on the edge of a cave that is steeped in history. It’s said that this very cave was the refuge of Robert the Bruce in 1306 after his defeat in Scotland.

Legend tells us that while hiding away, he found inspiration from a spider to continue his fight for Scottish independence. This tale has forever linked him with the island, and many visitors come to pay their respects at the cave, gazing out towards Scotland from Rathlin.

One satisfied visitor said: “The scenery is mind-blowing, and taking the bus up to the lighthouse and bird sanctuary was fantastic. So much to see, and not just puffins. Lots of other nesting birds, plus the old upside-down lighthouse. Just very cool.”

Another tourist wrote: “A perfect day on an idyllic and unspoilt island. From start to finish… from the scenic crossing to the cold drink at McCuaig’s bar overlooking the swimmers and paddle boarders in Church Bay (at the end of a long walk on a sunny day), Rathlin has everything you could desire.”

However, the only way to reach Rathlin Island is by ferry from Ballycastle Harbour. You have two options: a passenger-only ferry that takes about 25-30 minutes, or a larger ferry that accommodates both people and cars, which takes up to 45 minutes.

NEW YORK — Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations.

In a victory for the Democratic party’s progressive wing, Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani must now navigate the unending demands of America’s biggest city and deliver on ambitious — skeptics say unrealistic — campaign promises.

With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office Jan. 1.

Mamdani’s unlikely rise gives credence to Democrats who have urged the party to embrace more progressive, left-wing candidates instead of rallying behind centrists in hopes of winning back swing voters who have abandoned the party.

It was one of three victories by Democrats in high-profile races for elective office that were being viewed as a gauge of public sentiment toward President Trump in his second term. In California, voters were expected to approve Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50, a redistricting measure aimed at boosting Democrats’ chances in the midterm elections.

In New Jersey, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill was elected New Jersey governor over Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who was endorsed by Trump.

Sherrill, a 53-year-old Navy veteran who represented a northern New Jersey district in the U.S. House for four terms, will be the state’s second female governor.

Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the Virginia governor’s race, defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears to give Democrats a key victory heading into the 2026 midterm elections and make history as the first woman to lead the commonwealth.

Spanberger, 46, is a center-left Democrat and former CIA case officer who helped her party win a House majority during Trump’s first presidency.

Economic worries were the dominant concern as voters cast ballots for Tuesday’s elections, according to preliminary findings from the AP Voter Poll.

The results of the expansive survey of more than 17,000 voters in New Jersey, Virginia, California and New York City suggested the public was troubled by an economy that seems trapped by higher prices and fewer job opportunities.

Mamdani has already faced scrutiny from national Republicans, including Trump, who have eagerly cast him as a threat and the face of what they say is a more radical Democratic Party.

The contest drove the biggest turnout in a mayoral race in more than 50 years, with more than 2 million New Yorkers casting ballots, according to the city’s Board of Elections.

Mamdani’s grassroots campaign centered on affordability, and his charisma spoiled Cuomo’s attempted political comeback. The former governor, who resigned four years ago following allegations of sexual harassment that he continues to deny, was dogged by his past throughout the race and was criticized for running a negative campaign.

There’s also the question of how he will deal with Trump, who threatened to take over the city and to arrest and deport Mamdani if he won. Mamdani was born in Uganda, where he spent his early childhood, but was raised in New York City and became a U.S. citizen in 2018.

Mamdani, who was criticized throughout the campaign for his thin resume, will now have to begin staffing his incoming administration before taking office next year and game out how he plans to accomplish the ambitious but polarizing agenda that drove him to victory.

Among the campaign’s promises are free child care, free city bus service, city-run grocery stores and a new Department of Community Safety that would send mental health care workers to handle certain emergency calls rather than police officers. It is unclear how Mamdani will pay for such initiatives, given Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul’s steadfast opposition to his calls to raise taxes on wealthy people.

His decisions around the leadership of the New York Police Department will also be closely watched. Mamdani was a fierce critic of the department in 2020, calling for “this rogue agency” to be defunded and slamming it as “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.” He has since apologized for those comments and has said he will ask the current NYPD commissioner to stay on the job.

Mamdani’s campaign was driven by his optimistic view of the city and his promises to improve the quality of life for its middle and lower classes.

But Cuomo, Sliwa and other critics assailed him over his vehement criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Mamdani, a longtime advocate of Palestinian rights, has accused Israel of committing genocide and said he would honor an arrest warrant the International Criminal Court issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Going into the Democratic primary, Cuomo was the presumed favorite, with near-universal name recognition and deep political connections. Cuomo’s chances were buoyed further when incumbent Mayor Eric Adams bowed out of the primary while dealing with the fallout of his now-dismissed federal corruption case.

But as the race progressed, Mamdani’s natural charm, catchy social media videos and populist economic platform energized voters in the notoriously expensive city. He also began drawing outside attention as his name ID grew.

In New Jersey, Sherrill built her campaign around pushing back against Trump. She recently seized on the administration’s decision to abruptly freeze funding for a multibillion-dollar project to replace the aging rail tunnels that connect New Jersey to New York City beneath the Hudson River.

Spanberger’s victory in Virginia will flip partisan control of the governor’s office when she succeeds outgoing Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

“We sent a message to every corner of the commonwealth, a message to our neighbors and our fellow Americans across the country,” Spanberger told cheering supporters in Richmond. “We sent a message to the whole word that in 2025, Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship. We chose our commonwealth over chaos.”

THERE are some places that thrive in the summer, but others are best explored when there are crisp orange leaves on the ground, and the grass is littered with frost.

On my recent adventure to Northumberland, I discovered sprawling National Parks, living museums, quaint village and plenty of cosy pubs.

My adventure took me to the site of the former Sycamore Gap tree – the story that seemed to upset the entire nation.

The famous tree was mysteriously cut down in the middle of the night in September 2023. Something about the hateful environmental crime captured the public imagination globally.

Before and after pictures appeared in the media around the world and tears were shed.

It would later emerge that the 120-year-old specimen tree – which had featured in the 1991 Robin Hood film as well as countless holiday snaps – had been felled by two oddball friends as some kind of warped prank.

The pair were eventually jailed this summer for four years and three months each.

The episode initially seemed to spell the end of one of the North East’s greatest tourist attractions – but in fact it hasn’t.

The following year, the area earned nine per cent more from recreational visitors than it had before the tree was felled.

But if that makes it sound like the area is overrun with tourists, it isn’t. Not at all.

Unlike rivals such as the Lake and Peak Districts or the Yorkshire Dales, rural Northumberland doesn’t have quite as much mass appeal and it’s big and desolate enough to absorb the visitors it does get, so seldom feels busy.

Autumn is a particularly good time to go because the landscape and vernal colour palette seem to blend harmoniously together. 

If you go at low season (and now that half-term week has passed, that’s pretty much right now) you will find it feels most of the time as if you have the place to yourselves.

And it won’t cost much either – there’s excellent value for money.

Like the Sycamore Gap itself, much of what you will see is dotted along or near Hadrian’s Wall, the 2000-year-old fortification line that snakes its way up hill and down dale through all this glorious countryside.

And, of course, it joins up various other Roman sites that pepper the area with historic interest.

Our favourites were Vindolanda, an excavated village, the museum at Corbridge and the Temple of Mithras which has a counterpart in the buzzing heart of the City of London.

But naturally this one has a very different vibe as it’s out on its own on windswept moorland, miles from anywhere – and so superbly atmospheric.

We based ourselves in an Airbnb in converted outbuildings of a farm just outside the small town of Riding Mill, about 20 miles to the east of the Gap.

It was modestly priced but very pleasant and made an ideal base when motoring.

A couple of times we went east towards Newcastle or Beamish museum, with its charming recreation of streets and buildings from different periods.

We could also explore the coast, from the sweeping sands at Tynemouth to the more dramatic cliffs northwards.

Heading inland to the west it was more remote. Even at more managed spaces like the stunning National Trust park at Allen Banks, we scarcely saw another walker.

Our dogs loved it as much as we did. And after every walk we seemed to find ourselves conveniently close to a decent pub.

The area teems with them. I even compiled a top ten of the many boozers we went to during our week in Northumberland.

1. Lord Crewe Arms, Blanchland – Ancient, spooky, cosy, perfect.

2. The Ship Inn, Low Newton – Understated gem on a gem of a beach

3. The Rat, Anick – Just a perfect country food pub.

4. The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman Rest, Brampton – Wild location, good food, well done.

5. The Pele, Corbridge – Not named after the footballer but the circa 1350 tower it is set in. Wonderful.

6. Crown Posada, Newcastle – Lavish and delightfully intact interiors.

7. The Free Trade Inn, Newcastle – Grog on the Tyne. Amazing cityscape view.

8. Langley Castle Hotel, Hexham – Surrounded by suits of armour.

9. The Tynemouth Castle Inn, Tynemouth – Art Deco seaside gorgeousness.

10. The Sun Inn, Beamish Museum, Stanley – Technically a fake pub in a theme park- but so well done

Pubs aside, there was still the question of actually visiting Sycamore Gap itself – or what’s left of it.

We had put this off as it felt a bit sad but we had to face it before leaving.

It’s a short and very scenic walk from the village of Once Brewed, up to and then along in parallel with the surprisingly intact Roman Wall.

And going back to the question of its surprisingly enduring popularity, we saw more people here than on any rural outing.

It was still not exactly crowded but busier – and you realised that others too wanted to pay tribute to the lost tree, whether that was with a selfie or a quiet thought or two.

Even in this remote corner we weren’t far from not one but two decent pubs: The Twice Brewed Inn at Bardon Mill and The Milecastle Inn at Haltwhistle, both of which were delightful.

Visiting here is a way of putting two fingers up at the vile pair who are now languishing in prison, it’s also an absolute treat.

It seems the nation’s favourite beach has been named – and it’s nestled on the eastern coast

Gorleston-on-Sea Beach, a gem on the Norfolk coast just south of Great Yarmouth, has been crowned with the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best award, placing it amongst Europe’s top holiday destinations. The UK beach, renowned for its stunning views and golden sands, finds itself in good company, rubbing shoulders with popular spots in Greece and Spain.

The coveted ‘Best of the Best’ accolade is bestowed upon beaches that consistently receive glowing reviews on TripAdvisor over a year. With fewer than 1% of the 8 million listings achieving this milestone, Gorleston-on-Sea Beach stands tall on an impressive pedestal.

Visitors to the beach can enjoy views of grassy cliffs, engage in a game of pitch and putt, or try their hand at bowling greens, tennis and basketball. For the little ones, there’s a playground, a model yacht pond and a splashpad.

One of the major attractions is the free parking, coupled with public toilets, including facilities for disabled visitors. Known for its popularity among surfers and body boarders, Gorleston-on-Sea beach is a hit with water sports enthusiasts.

“A great play park on the clifftop which we had to ourselves even in school holidays. Few cafes and good toilet facilities. Lovely and clean area.”

Another visitor was charmed by its “old fashioned charm” and “miles of sandy beach”, while a third praised the “beautiful beach and calming atmosphere”.

Another tourist gushed: “Beautiful beach, so clean, so long and so relaxing. Sandy parts, stony parts, lots of lovely views. Amenities nearby and public loos.”

Yet another posted: “Beautiful beach with all that you need for a lovely family day at the beach. Drinks, ice cream and delicious fish and chips. Added bonus of plenty of free parking. Would defo recommend.”

Gorleston is touted as an excellent base for exploring Norfolk and Suffolk, and it’s a breeze to get there from Great Yarmouth, whether by car or public transport.

There are several bus services that run between Great Yarmouth and Gorleston.

Pevensey Bay sits between Eastbourne and Hastings on the East Sussex coast and is an old fishing village.

It might look familiar to anyone who watched ITV‘s Flesh and Blood series in 2020 as it was used as a filming location along with the nearby town of Eastbourne.

The village is small but still has a local shop and places to eat like The Aqua Bar and Castle Inn.

When it comes to coastal adventures, guests can walk to reach Cooden Bay in one direction and Eastbourne Sovereign Harbour in the other.

Sovereign Harbour has The Waterfront’s bars, restaurants and cafés with views out to the marina.

Further inland is the village of Westham, which is home to the Castle Cottage Tearoom, and as the name suggests, it sits right next to Pevensey Castle.

There’s nothing quite like gazing at the stunning panorama from a mountain summit, yet not everyone possesses the ability, stamina, time or inclination to climb one. If any of those circumstances describe you, then worry not as a recently launched Scottish mountain railway offers you jaw-dropping highland views, without requiring any mountaineering whatsoever.

Digital content creator Chris Paul Lawlor, who’s renowned for discovering Scotland, posted on his Facebook page to share a brief video all about the Cairngorms Mountain Railway, situated in Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands. His footage began with a first-person perspective clip from the railway, which reopened in February this year following a £25million renovation, to demonstrate to his audience what they would witness if they journeyed on it.

Additional picturesque shots of the magnificent location were then displayed, as overlay text stated: “Did you know that in Scotland there is a railway on a mountain just newly reopened taking you to a restaurant at the top with breathtaking views.”

Besides being Scotland’s sole mountain railway, it’s also the loftiest railway in the UK, ascending to a summit station at 1,097 metres (3,599 ft) above sea level.

In addition to travelling on the railway itself, Chris mentioned you could “make a day of it” by embarking on a trek to the pyramid in the Cairngorms National Park, which lies a 35-minute drive away. Officially known as Prince Albert’s Cairn, this pyramid is a monument erected by Queen Victoria in 1862 on the Balmoral Estate to honour her husband, Prince Albert.

It’s the grandest of 11 Royal cairns in the vicinity, perched atop a hill that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and national park.

To reach the cairn, visitors can embark on a hike through woodland trails, choosing between a shorter, direct walk or a longer circular route that takes in other cairns.

While there’s no fee to visit Prince Albert’s Cairn itself, parking charges apply. Expect to pay around £5 for a car and £10 for a motorhome or van for the day.

The car park is conveniently located near the A93 road at the start of the walk.

The expert also recommended a trip to the Green Loch, famed for its unusually green water. This unique hue is due to a combination of algae in the water and the reflection of the surrounding pine trees.

However, local folklore suggests that fairies washing their clothes in the loch are responsible for its colour.

Chris also suggested a visit to Loch Morlich before heading to the railway. This freshwater loch near Aviemore is renowned for its sandy beaches and awe-inspiring mountain scenery.

It’s a hotspot for watersports enthusiasts, offering activities like kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing, with a dedicated watersports centre on site. Visitors can also explore walking and mountain biking trails in the nearby Glenmore Forest Park.

Chris’s post about the railway and surrounding suggestions, captioned “An autumn day out idea in Scotland,” was a hit with fans, garnering 4,800 likes.

One follower gushed: “Oh my God this makes me want to come back even more. We visited Scotland 11 years ago for our honeymoon. Now my 8-year-old wants to go.”

Another fan lauded the “wonderful scenery”.

A third chimed in: “Glad the railway is open again, it makes the beautiful mountain summit more accessible to all people.”

While a fourth added: “Wow, what a place and view.”

A day pass for the Cairngorms Mountain Railway costs £17.00 for an adult and £9.50 for a junior (aged 6-17) if booked in advance online. On-the-day prices are £19.00 for an adult and £11.50 for a junior. Prices are also available for seniors and students.

A charming Victorian market town nestled beside a national park ranks among Britain’s most beautiful destinations. Located just 90 minutes by car from Greater Manchester, Ilkley in West Yorkshire has earned widespread recognition for its stunning appeal.

Positioned on the fringes of the Yorkshire Dales, Ilkley triumphed over coastal rivals in Cornwall and East Sussex to secure fifth place in The Telegraph‘s ranking of Britain’s most picturesque towns. The newspaper enlisted specialists to evaluate communities based on “pleasantness of their shop fronts, historic architecture, low traffic and litter, stunning viewpoints and plentiful greenery, culminating in a score out of 50.”

Ilkley secured an impressive overall rating of 44 out of 50, earning perfect tens for panoramic vistas and green spaces. It also scored nine out of 10 for retail frontages, eight for period buildings and seven in the minimal traffic and rubbish category, reports the Express.

The Telegraph highlighted Ilkley’s “excellent views”, which are “guaranteed at almost every turn”, owing to its hillside position overlooking the River Wharfe without a tower block in sight. The community also boasts “wide and leafy streets”, especially the Grove, which features a “broad pavement, bandstand, cherry trees and handsome shopfronts”.

Ilkley’s remarkable selection of independent retailers receives praise, alongside its “swish cinema,” park, brewery, and “artisan food market.” Arguably the most renowned establishment in Ilkley remains Betty’s Cafe Tea Rooms, celebrated for its signature Fat Rascal fruit scones and indulgent afternoon teas.

The Ilkley branch is particularly special, as the shop features a dedicated chocolate counter, offering a treasure trove of handcrafted treats. It also has its own brewery, Ilkley Brewery, and tap room, which serves Italian-inspired food, including pizzetta sandwiches and roasts on Sundays.

But it’s not just the town itself which lends it to being ‘pretty’. It also has some incredible countryside right on its doorstep.

There’s the wild and windswept Ilkley Moor, perfect for a bracing hike. It features many intriguing rock formations, including the interestingly named Cow and Calf rocks.

You can also head to Middleton Woods, which is covered by a blanket of orange leaves every spring. Ilkley does have something that sets it apart from other towns, however.

It has been a hotspot for visitors for decades, having opened in the 1930s. TimeOut ranked it as one of the best outdoor pools in the UK, and is often bustling with activity during the summer, as it tends to open from May to September.

But if it’s a bit too cold to venture into the outdoor pool, Ilkley Lido is also home to a 25m indoor pool. But if you’re feeling brave, the River Wharfe is also a safe bathing water area.

Peter Windsor, 61, was convicted of stalking Myleene and her Classic FM colleague Katie Breathwick after bombarding them with creepy letters and gifts.

The 61-year-old allegedly sent Myleene items with “sexual overtones” – including a Catwoman outfit and set of handcuffs.

He also called her a “naughty vixen” and sent a police uniform to the Classic FM studio, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Giving evidence, Myleene said she was informed in an email in August last year that an “accumulation” of items had been sent to her.

She became upset when she was asked about being told how Royal Mail had “intercepted” an air pistol addressed to her.

She said “it just felt extreme on every front” after she was shown a list of items and photographs of letters Windsor allegedly sent.

The ITV star added: “It was very clear very quickly that it was a highly volatile selection of items.

“It was a huge shock, especially the extent to which it had escalated.

“It was pretty overwhelming when you have the accumulation of a bundle of this information. It’s pretty terrifying.”

It also emerged that Windsor was arrested but not prosecuted after sending a letter in October 2020 to Ms Sturgeon when she was Scottish First Minister.

Following his conviction earlier this month, Myleene said: “After a horrific year, my family and I finally have peace.”

Posting to her 500,000 fans on social media, she added: “Thank you for your love and support.”

The heartwarming photos captured the moment Alaina surprised her husband — leading a blindfolded Matt into a room at the couple’s new home-in-progress, decorated with a giant gold “Baby M” balloon.

She then presented him with a shoebox containing a positive pregnancy test and a pair of tiny sneakers.

The baby girl will be Eminem and Kim’s second grandchild after the birth of their daughter Hailie Jade’s son, Elliot, in March this year with her husband, Evan McClintock.

Kim, 50, was also seen in new photographs this month looking healthy and happy after her previous health struggles.

The mother-of-four and rapper married in 1999 but divorced in 2001. 

They later reconciled and tied the knot a second time in 2006 before finally parting ways and are now on good terms.

Alaina’s mother, Dawn, who was Kim’s sister, died of a drug overdose in 2016 after years of addiction problems.

Kim is also mom to Stevie Laine, 23, who identifies as non-binary, and was also raised by Eminem, 52, while she also has a son, Parker, who is believed to be in his teens. 

Both Stevie and Parker are from different relationships.

It’s five miles from the nearest inhabited island and 75 miles from any train station, but is still pretty hard to get to – as tide conditions can make it tricky to access. Landing can be achieved by small craft in one of two sheltered bays, subject to tide conditions, at Geo lar to the north or Geodha Ear to the south.

On the market with Galbraith, who are managing the sale, they say there are no services or dwellings present on the island, but there may be scope for a modest cabin or hut subject to the necessary planning permission.

The company advertised the island saying there is potential for it to become ‘a truly unique retreat’. The management company say Harris is the southern and more mountainous part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island in the Outer Hebrides.

It’s known for sandy beaches like Luskentyre and Scarista on the west coast, and for rugged mountains in the north. Harris is also the original home of the world famous Harris Tweed – luxury handwoven cloth.

A globe-trotting woman who has explored 100 countries has revealed which destination reigns supreme above all others. Marta Luisa García, 52, has dedicated much of her life to roaming the planet, journeying everywhere from Namibia to Europe‘s grand capitals and far beyond.

Her wanderlust began when her elder brother received an Atlas for his First Communion, leaving her captivated by the nations within its pages. This grew into an obsession with travel programmes on the telly as she became enthralled by their tales.

Yet among all the spectacular marvels she’s witnessed, Marta, hailing from A Coruña, Spain, has confessed to having a clear favourite, reports the Express.

Marta’s favourite country

Chatting to La Voz De Galicia, Marta revealed her adoration for tropical shores including the Maldives but particularly Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Regarding the latter, she declared: “For me, French Polynesia is a dream trip.”

French Polynesia stands as an overseas territory of France, comprising islands such as Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Mo’orea. A standard flight deal to the island haven of Bora Bora – roughly 9,500 miles distant in the South Pacific – can begin from £2,200 per person.

However, those fortunate enough to have visited insist it’s worth every single penny, boasting crystal-clear turquoise waters to discover, stunning scenery and Maldives-style overwater retreats.

Marta confessed that her love for travel wasn’t limited to French Polynesia. She revealed that France and Italy were the countries she had visited most frequently, attributing this to their proximity and affordability, stating: “I’ve been to France for £10 return.”

Despite having travelled extensively, Marta still has a few destinations left on her bucket list. She shared: “Today, of the seven wonders of the world, only Machu Picchu remains for me to see. I haven’t been to Peru, but I’m terrified of altitude sickness.”

Other favourites of world travellers

Marta isn’t the only globetrotter with favouite destinations. Earlier this year, Cameron Mofid, who has visited every UN-recognised country and territory, also shared his top picks.

After completing his global tour in April with a trip to North Korea, he spoke about his favourite countries and territories, two of which are currently subject to travel warnings from the UK’s FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office).

In a conversation with CNN, he singled out Algeria and Yemen as standout destinations. Speaking about Algeria, he said: “It’s one of my favourite countries in the whole world. The countries that receive the least amount of tourism are often the ones where you have the best experience, because you feel totally immersed in their culture.”

Meanwhile, Yemen caught his eye due to the sensation of stepping back in time. He remarked: “To see people dress the same way that they were hundreds if not thousands of years ago. To see people living in mud houses, to see people still using flip phones.”
