Alexander Isak: Newcastle striker named in Sweden squad for World Cup qualifiers

Alexander Isak has been named in the Sweden squad despite not playing any football this season as he pushes to leave Newcastle.

Isak is among the 24 players named by Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson for World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo next month.

The 25-year-old is training away from his Newcastle team-mates after making clear he wants to join Liverpool despite having three years left on his contract.

Fellow striker Viktor Gyokeres, who scored his first two goals for Arsenal at the weekend, is also included in Tomasson’s squad.

The Sweden coach said: “I am very happy that Alexander Isak wants to be in the squad, he is a huge player.

“The situation he is in is not perfect and he has not trained with the team. But he is a player who can decide matches and he wants to be part of our squad. The World Cup is important for Alexander Isak.”

Liverpool have yet to make a fresh bid for Isak since an offer of £110m was rejected at the start of this month.

Isak has since released a statement on social media accusing Newcastle of breaking a promise to allow him to leave this summer.

The Magpies have denied making such a commitment and continue to insist Isak is not for sale.

Women’s World Cup 2025: Kate Cross left out of England’s squad, Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sarah Glenn return

Kate Cross has been left out of England’s squad for the Women’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, but batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge and leg-spinner Sarah Glenn have been recalled.

Former captain Heather Knight, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury since the end of May, is also included.

Seamer Cross is one of England’s most experienced bowlers in one-day internationals, with 101 wickets in 76 matches, but she has struggled for form since suffering a back injury at the end of 2024.

The 33-year-old was injured during England’s tour of South Africa in December, and was subsequently included in the Ashes squad but did not play a game during the disastrous 16-0 thrashing in Australia.

Cross has played four ODIs this summer, three against West Indies and one against India, but only took three wickets at an average of 55.

The World Cup starts on 30 September, with England’s first match against South Africa taking place on 3 October in Bengaluru.

Australia are defending their title after they beat England in the 2022 final.

Asia Cup 2025: India select Gill, Bumrah for T20 squad; Jaiswal out | Cricket News

Test skipper Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah made the cut with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer the biggest omissions from the 15-man squad.

Defending champions India have named top order batter Shubman Gill and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in their Twenty20 squad for next month’s Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle order batter Shreyas Iyer, however, did not make Tuesday’s cut for the 15-member squad, led by Suryakumar Yadav.

Gill, India’s Test captain, has not played a T20 International since July last year when he was Suryakumar’s deputy on a tour of Sri Lanka.

“That’s where we started a new cycle,” said Suryakumar, who took over the T20 captaincy from Rohit Sharma after India won the 20-overs World Cup title last year.

“After that, he got busy with all the Test series, and he didn’t get an opportunity to play T20s because he was busy playing Test cricket and Champions Trophy,” Suryakumar told reporters.

“So he’s there in the squad, and we’re happy to have him.”

India also included Bumrah, whose recent workload has been a major concern for the team think tank, which played him in three of the five Tests in England in June and July.

No room for Jaiswal

With three opening options in Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, India could not accommodate Jaiswal.

“With regard to Yashasvi, it’s just unfortunate again,” chief selector Ajit Agarkar said.

“There’s Abhishek Sharma – what he’s done over the last year or so, plus he can bowl a little bit. He gives us that option if required.

“One of these guys was going to miss out, Yashasvi just has to wait for his chance.”

Samson and Jitesh Sharma are the two wicketkeepers in the side, which also includes left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

India begin their Group A campaign against hosts United Arab Emirates in Dubai before meeting archrivals Pakistan at the same venue four days later.

The Asia Cup 2025 begins on September 9.

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson

Chelsea scramble to sell ten-man ‘bomb squad’ before transfer deadline with Blues ready to agree Raheem Sterling loan

But they equally want to avoid the kind of last-minute scramble that sent the England international to Arsenal last season.

Chelsea are seeking to offload Sterling, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, David Datro Fofana and Ben Chilwell in the next fortnight.

Young winger Tyrique George could also be on the way out, while defender Aaron Anselmino is surplus to the current requirements of boss Enzo Maresca.

Sterling has two years left on a contract worth more than £300,000 per week.

Chelsea ended up paying a significant proportion of those wages last season as part of an 11th-hour deal with the Gunners on transfer deadline day.

Sterling would prefer to stay in England and preferably in the London area. Son Thiago, eight, signing for Arsenal’s academy earlier this summer.

Fulham have shown interest but it is yet to turn into a concrete offer, and oversea clubs including Napoli have also been linked to the winger..

Chelsea still want to bring more new players IN to the club, despite already spending more than £240m this summer.

They have recouped £200m in sales by moving on players like Noni Madueke, who joined Arsenal for £52m.

But the Blues will need to sell in order to feel comfortable about making deals for Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.

So far Chelsea have struggled to find clubs willing to match their valuations for Jackson, Nkunku, Veiga, Chuwuemeka and Disasi.

And although the Blues would prefer to sell them all if possible, they are now open to loan deals with obligations or options to buy for at least some of them.

Napoli could now join Newcastle, Aston Villa, Juventus and AC Milan among the potential suitors for Jackson, after former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku suffered an injury.

But the Blues are struggling to create a competitive market for their other unwanted stars.

Norgaard, who joined the Gunners for £10million this summer, was missing, despite being ever-present in pre-season.

It is possible the Dane has a knock as he has not been seen in training this week.

Arteta instead started another newboy, Martin Zubimendi, alongside Declan Rice in midfield.

While Mikel Merino was named as the sole midfielder on the bench, although Myles Lewis-Skelly can play there too.

Several exiled players were also excluded from the squad, with many made available for transfer.

Reiss Nelson, Jakub Kiwior, Fabio Vieira are amongst those who are expected to leave in the next few days.

They could be joined out of the exit door by Albert Sambi Lokonga and Oleksandr Zinchenko, who have also fallen out of Arteta’s plans.

Arsenal did not miss Norgaard as Rice curled in a corner to set up the opener.

England vs India: Nitish Kumar Reddy out of rest of Test series as India name uncapped Anshul Kamboj in squad for Old Trafford

India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will miss the remainder of their Test series against England due to a knee injury.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement that the 22-year-old will now fly home to begin his rehabilitation.

India are also without seamer Arshdeep Singh for this week’s fourth Test after he was ruled out with a thumb injury.

“He [Arshdeep] sustained an impact injury to his left thumb while bowling in the nets at a training session in Beckenham,” said the BBCI.

“The BCCI medical team is monitoring his progress.”

India have added uncapped all-rounder Anshul Kamboj to their squad for the fourth Test at Old Trafford, which starts on Wednesday.

Reddy barely made an impact in India’s emphatic victory over England at Edgbaston, going wicketless and scoring one run in each innings.

He took three wickets for 82 and contributed 43 runs across both innings in their defeat at Lord’s last week as England went 2-1 up in the five-match series.

Left-arm quick Arshdeep has not featured in any of the three Tests so far.

India will also have to consider whether fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will play in Manchester as they manage his workload.

Bumrah is earmarked to play three matches in the series and featured in the first and third Tests.

Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant could be in line to play as a specialist batter if he does not recover from the finger injury he suffered at Lord’s with Dhruv Jurel poised to step up if required.

India squad for fourth Test: Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj
