Derbyshire’s Peak District offers one of the UK’s most spectacular winter walks, with this 517m summit near Castleton village providing panoramic views across snow-covered countryside

As snow blankets Derbyshire and frosty temperatures settle in, many are seeking ways to soak up the magical winter atmosphere, and this particular walk could be just the ticket.

Year-round, visitors flock from far and wide to tackle the ascent of Mam Tor, regardless of the weather. However, there’s something particularly enchanting about the trail during winter months, as its sweeping vistas allow you to witness the entire Derbyshire landscape draped in a delicate layer of snow. The peak is affectionately dubbed the ‘Mother Hill’, rising majestically to 517m and providing sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. What makes the walk particularly appealing is the variety of routes on offer, ranging in difficulty, with most beginning in the picturesque nearby village of Castleton.

One walker shared their thoughts on TripAdvisor, noting: “This short walk offers an excellent chance to see unrivalled 360° panoramic views of the Peak District… It does not take long to complete the walk; we were there and back in 30 minutes. Quite a steep gradient to get to the top, but this is mainly on stone steps, so walking up is very safe. Once at the top, the views are spectacular and worth the effort to get there.”

Among the most favoured routes is the full circular walk, typically beginning from the National Trust car park at Mam Nick and continuing all the way to the summit. Walkers can traverse the ridge of the imposing hill and enjoy breathtaking views throughout their entire ascent.

Following the trek, one hiker described the vistas as nothing short of “breathtaking”. They did note, however, that most of the path is uphill, demanding a moderately challenging effort, though walkers are treated to glimpses of cattle and sheep grazing in the surrounding fields.

Another visitor shared: “I’ve been to Mam Tor on a number of occasions, and it’s one of the best hikes for me. The views are stunning, and there are routes for all types of walkers. Parking is easy to find, and it’s always a great experience to get out and get some fresh air. I’d definitely recommend getting out there if you can.”

During the winter months, walkers can anticipate stunning snow-blanketed scenery, especially along the Great Ridge. However, it’s wise to verify conditions beforehand, as ice and frost can make the terrain treacherous and necessitate proper winter hiking equipment.

Nestled conveniently at the foot of the hill lies the picturesque village of Castleton, brimming with pubs and cafés ideal for refuelling before or after a day’s ramble. For the perfect warm retreat, ramblers often pop in for a pint at establishments such as Ye Olde Nags Head, The George, The Bulls Head and the Old Club House.

BEING wowed by a spectacular show is the perfect finale to a theme park day out – as the big hitters in Europe and America do so well.

Now, one Midlands amusement park is blazing a trail for other UK attractions.

Drayton Manor near Tamworth is billing it’s new nighttime lake show as the biggest of its kind in the UK, so I went to check it out.

The lights and water fountains were introduced this year to mark the 75th anniversary of the park and mark the close of the day, just like at Disneyland and Efteling.

The shows will change to reflect the season.

Drayton Manor is my nearest theme park and I’ve been on many days out there over the years.

I used to love the Mississippi showboat fun house on the lake in the late 80s and early 90s and I can also remember when you used to be able to take a turn around the water on the Drayton Queen paddleboat.

But it’s been a while since the lake has hosted attractions in its own right, instead of providing a pretty backdrop that everything else is set around.

So it was lovely to see the water taking centre stage in this spectacle of lights, fountains and music.

While it’s on a smaller scale than the likes of Disney and Efteling, it’s a brilliant idea to bring everyone together to mark the end of a great day out.

Sometimes heading home after all the rides and fun can feel a bit anticlimactic, especially if you’re trying to load young children bouncing around with excitement into the car for the drive home.

So this water, music and fire show is the perfect way to add a little bit of a buffer between finishing your fun and heading home.

We watched the Christmas Miracle on the Lake show and it was truly magical, with jets of water lit up and set to festive classics.

The dancing jets were interspersed with a screen of mist that had an animated story projected onto it, so that Christmas scenes such as Santa’s workshop and ice palaces could be brought to life.

There were even dramatic flames shooting up into the sky at points, so Drayton Manor really has pulled out all the stops to make the most of its new spectacle.

It’s also nice that it runs shorter versions of the light show during the day so that younger guests who may not still be on site by the close of the day have something to enjoy as well.

But for the full effect, you will want to watch the 15-minute grand finale in all its splendour.

I’ve seen quite a few well-rated magic fountain shows in my travels, including at Montjuic in Barcelona and in front of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

This year, I was wowed by the water effects while watching Kynren, an epic outdoor show telling tales of the British Isles.

And I would say that Drayton Manor has drawn inspiration from all of these to bring something impressive to its guests.

It’s even installed viewing platforms around the edge of the lake to give those stood further back a better view over the head of visitors in front.

Given it’s a new concept for Brits, there were lots of announcements over the course of the day in the park, letting guests know what time to expect the show to kick off.

There were even a couple of lakeside rides still running when the light show took place – I imagine it would be quite the experience to see the fountains from the pirate ship or while being spun around on the thrill ride Thor in the Viking land.

I’ll certainly look forward to seeing what new shows the park comes up with as the seasons change – make sure it’s on your 2026 to-do list if you want that European theme park vibe but without leaving the UK.

AMERICAN stars Beyoncé and Jay-Z are set to use a “rich person” planning loophole to build a huge rural estate in the UK. 

The couple are said to have bought a 58-acre plot in the Cotswolds for their mansion. 

On the land is a derelict shack near an algae-filled lake. 

Permission has been granted for a spectacular seven-bed property. 

Development is allowed under a special exemption clause in the Government’s National Planning Policy Framework. It gives permission for new homes in rural locations where planning would typically be refused. 

To qualify the design must be of “exceptional quality . . . truly outstanding, reflecting the highest standards in architecture”.

It has been dubbed the “rich person clause” because of the ­millions of pounds required to override regular restrictions. 

Planning permission for the development in Oxfordshire was granted in 2021 but work never started. 

The plot was later marketed for £7.5million with the permission attached and has been sold — with Texas Hold ’Em singer Beyoncé, 44, and 99 Problems rapper Jay-Z, 56, believed to be the purchasers. 

The listing stated the property is “totally unique”, adding “The site for the new house is at the head of a long drive that meanders through beautiful countryside to a magical woodland lake. 

“The start of the drive is on the edge of a sought-after village and is within striking distance of Soho Farmhouse. 

“Permission has been granted to create a large contemporary dwelling that part-cantilevers over its own lake, has incredible room volumes throughout, will be exceptionally light and have stunning views over the countryside. 

“The position and the permission are unrivalled.” 

Beyoncé, Jay-Z and their children live in California but have made several trips to the area. 

Stars Jeremy Clarkson, Claudia Winkleman and David and Victoria Beckham live nearby. 

But locals have concerns about an influx of A-listers. One 71-year-old, who has lived there for more than 60 years, said: “My grandson will think this is wonderful that they are coming here. I think it will change the village.”
