Amazon slashes £59 off Nespresso coffee machine that’s a ‘gamechanger for morning coffees’

Many of us love a morning coffee boost, and investing in a coffee machine can make the at-home experience a lot nicer.

The Nespresso Citiz Coffee Machine has been reduced from £175 to £116.10 on Amazon right now.

The coffee machine is great for a quick drink fix.

Buying coffee out has become very expensive, but sometimes instant coffee just can’t compete.

It may not be a household essential, but a coffee machine is nice little luxury to own, especially for those slow weekend mornings when you have time to sip at a frothy coffee.

The Nespresso Citiz Coffee Machine is compact, so it won’t take up too much precious counter space.

With black and silver details, it’s a super-sleek design, and very simple to use too.

To make your coffee, you just have to pop a pod into the top, and then choose from two buttons – lungo for a longer, weaker drink or espresso for a more intense shot that you can drink straight away.

Seven coffee pods are included so you can get brewing straight away, but it also uses the size of coffee pods that are very readily available at supermarkets, so when you need a top-up you can get cheaper own brand versions too.

If you’ve got a thermal flask, you can easily take a coffee out and about with you, especially if you’re hoping the investment will save you money buying takeaway drinks.

The coffee machine has made its way into Amazon’s bestsellers list, so it’s proving popular online.

Shoppers are leaving their feedback on the Nespresso device, with one saying: ‘’Such a game-changer for morning coffees.

‘’Couldn’t live without it after I’d experienced having this.

‘’Easy to use, easy to clean, small and compact but still stylish on the kitchen side.’’

Another shopper commented: ‘’Great coffee machine!

‘’Love the style and colour, also fits cheaper brand coffee pods such as the Amazon range and Lidl.

‘’Makes lovely coffee, I’m so glad I invested in this machine!‘’

A third shopper added: ‘’A replacement for our old coffee machine which went well.

‘’We’re very pleased with it so far as it’s not too big and sits on our worktop nicely, plus it makes lovely coffee.’’

Major UK supermarket slashes ALL Christmas chocolate tubs – and you DON’T need a loyalty card

A MAJOR UK supermarket has slashed the price of all its Christmas chocolate tubs – and you don’t need a loyalty card to get the bargain.

With just under 100 days to go until Christmas, shoppers are being urged to stock up early and save money on their festive favourites.

A tub of Quality Street or Celebrations now costs £4.42,

Asda, today cut the price on its tubs of Celebrations, Quality Street, Cadbury Heroes and Cadbury Roses – making them the cheapest on the market without signing up for any scheme.

A tub of Quality Street or Celebrations now costs £4.42, while Cadbury Heroes and Roses are just £4.92 each.

The supermarket said it wanted to give customers the best value possible ahead of the busy festive period, with no need to scan a card or download an app at the checkout.

The deals come as Asda recently unveiled its full Christmas food range for 2025.

It includes Hot Maple Pigs in Blankets, a Pigs in Duvet Wreath, a Festive Fondue Kit, Slow Cured Rack of Pork with Truffle Butter and Parmesan Crumb and a Pistachio & Milk Chocolate Flavour Cream Liqueur.

Retail experts say the price cuts could spark a supermarket price war as competitors look to match Asda’s prices in the run-up to December.

It follows a strong year for Asda, which was named one of the UK’s cheapest supermarkets by Which? earlier this month.

In August, a larger trolley shop of 190 items cost £474.86 at Asda – £11.03 cheaper than Tesco with a Clubcard.

Christmas chocolate price wars

Sweets under the tree are a big part of Christmas for British households.

Supermarkets often offer flash promotions giving shoppers a chance to get their festive favourites at a discounted price.

But these offers aren’t around for long.

Earlier this month, Tesco slashed the price of Quality Street tubs to £2.95.

The price drop gave shoppers a chance to stock up ahead of Christmas.

You’ll need to hide away the tubs to avoid the temptation of tucking in before December.

Besides the big chocolate tubs, other Christmas favourites are starting to land on shelves.

Cadbury’s Mini Snow Balls are one of the best-selling chocolate treats during Christmas time.

How to save money on chocolate

We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don’t have to break the bank buying your favourite bar.

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs…

Go own brand – if you’re not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you’ll save by going for the supermarket’s own brand bars.

Shop around – if you’ve spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it’s cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like Trolley.co.uk let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you’re getting the best deal.

Look out for yellow stickers – supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they’ve been reduced.

They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged.

Buy bigger bars – most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar.

So if you’ve got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.

Vile moment ex-boyfriend slashes prison officer’s THROAT with Stanley knife after lying in wait outside her home

THIS is the vile moment an ex-boyfriend slashes a prison officer’s throat with a Stanley knife after lying in wait outside her home.

Prison officer Rosie Niessen, 28, was ambushed by her ex in broad daylight as he attempted to kill her.

Doorbell camera footage of Simon attacking Rosie with a Stanley knife. A woman caught the moment her ex slashed her throat on her doorbell camera after he hid in the bushes and waited for her to leave for work. Rosie Niessen, 28, left for work as a prison officer when her ex-partner, Simon Scrimshaw, then 50, came up behind wielding a Stanley knife. He slashed her throat and hacked her face, neck and hands as she fought back. Luckily Rosie's dad, Roberto Niessen, 55, a doorman, heard her screams and came to her rescue but suffered a gash on his leg.

Simon Scrimshaw, then 50, hid in the bushes outside Niessen’s home in March 2023 as she left for work in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire at 6.40am.

Rosie, who has a daughter with Scrimshaw, has now bravely released appalling doorbell camera footage showing the horror of what happened that morning.

Wearing a balaclava, Scrimshaw is shown appearing from his hiding spot before running up behind Rosie.

As she reached the end of her driveway, he grabbed her and pulled back her head before hacking at her neck with a Stanley blade while wrestling her to the ground.

She can be heard screaming “what are you doing?” and “stop, help me” as the attack unfolded.

Rosie bravely fought back against Scrimshaw who inflicted devastating injuries to her throat, face and hands as she tried to defend herself.

Her courageous dad, Roberto, heard Rosie’s screams and raced out, jumping on Scrimshaw in a desperate attempt to protect his daughter.

He was stabbed in the right thigh before Scrimshaw fled which later required 50 stitches in his leg.

A passer-by alerted the emergency services, and Rosie and her dad were rushed to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham

There, Rosie had a CT scan and surgeons glued and stitched her wounds with doctors saying she was “lucky to be alive”.

A neighbour called the police after witnessing the attack and Scrimshaw was later arrested.

Rosie met Scrimshaw in 2017 and they entered an on-off romantic relationship which ended in 2022 – the pair had a daughter during that time.

She told The Sun last year that Scrimshaw had harassed and even strangled her on a previous occasion.

According to the Mail, they were due to appear at a family court two days after the attack as Rosie had applied for a court order to keep him away from her.

Rosie told the newspaper she was in “shock” and said she “could hear rustling” before Scrimshaw came at her with the blade.

She said that she protected her neck on “instinct” as she defended herself.

“Imagine if I did die or didn’t defend myself as I did,” she added.

“They said I was in a pool of blood. They didn’t know I was going to make it.”

Rosie had to leave her job since the attack and has struggled with both the physical and mental scars inflicted upon her by Scrimshaw.

She said he had “taken everything from me” and branded Scrimshaw a “monster”.

Scrimshaw was jailed for 28 years in January 2024 after being convicted of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm, with a further four on license.

He was also ordered not to contact Rosie and was given a lifetime restraining order.

Now, Rosie is speaking out to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Major supermarket slashes price of 650 grocery staples including meat, oil & toiletries to beat rivals

A MAJOR supermarket has slashed the cost of hundreds of grocery staples in a bid to help shoppers save money.

Morrisons has reduced the prices of 650 everyday items, with savings averaging 18%.

Essentials such as chicken breast fillets, fresh vegetables, olive oil, laundry pods, and enchilada kits are all included in the price cuts.

These reductions take effect today, both in-store and online, and will remain in place for at least four to eight weeks.

The supermarket says the move is aimed at helping households manage rising costs, especially with Christmas just around the corner.

Family meal staples such as rice, pasta, and chicken have been discounted, alongside basics like toilet rolls, kitchen rolls, and mayonnaise.

Seasonal items such as soups and cold and flu tablets are also included in the reductions.

Alex Paver, pricing and customer director at Morrisons, said: “At Morrisons we believe great quality should be affordable for everyone, and we know that the cost of everyday products really matter to our customers right now.

“That’s why we’re cutting the prices of over 650 items, from fresh favourites to cupboard staples, so our customers can trust they’re getting real value every time they shop with us.

“These price cuts mean customers can spend less on the essentials and still enjoy the great quality Morrisons is known for.”

In addition to the price reductions, Morrisons has also launched a number of weekly deals.

These include discounts on popular items like wine, coffee, and tea.

What else is happening at Morrisons?

Morrisons slashed over 3,600 jobs and closed 17 stores as part of a major shake-up to its operations.

The supermarket’s workforce dropped from 104,819 to 101,144 in the year leading up to October 27, 2024.

Thousands of jobs were axed across Morrisons’ stores, head office, as well as its manufacturing and distribution operations.

The latest job losses come after the Morrisons shut 17 of its stores around the UK earlier this year, with the final store in Haxby, North Yorkshireclosing on May 14.

The 16 other stores were all axed in April.

As part of a cost-cutting overhaul, the grocer also shut more than 50 of its in-store cafés, 35 meat and fish counters, and 18 Market Kitchen food courts earlier this year.

It cited the need to cut costs amid rising financial pressure.

It is instead investing in tech, rolling out new “Tally” robots to help customers find items on the shelves and improve stock management.

However, the business has returned to profit for the first time since 2021, when the chain was bought by US private equity investor Clayton Dubilier & Rice (CD&R).

Morrisons posted a pre-tax profit of £2.1billion for the year ending October 27 2024, reversing losses of £919million in 2023 and £1.3billion in 2022, according to new filings on Companies House.

L.A. classical station KUSC slashes staff after federal funding cuts to public radio

Los Angeles classical music station KUSC-FM (91.5) has laid off employees after Republicans cut federal funding from the Corp. for Public Broadcasting.

James A. Muhammad, president of Classical California, the entity that operates the nonprofit KUSC and its sister station, KDFC in San Francisco, confirmed the workforce reduction in a note sent Thursday to its listeners.

“Despite our best efforts, the fact is that Classical California has experienced a reduction of $1.1 million in support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting,” Muhammad wrote. “This, along with other impacts, requires us to make difficult decisions across KUSC-FM and KDFC-FM.”

A representative for Classical California did not respond to questions on the number of employees cut. A person briefed on the move who was not authorized to comment publicly said it was eight positions, including two department managers, all based in Los Angeles.

None of the announcers at the two stations were included in the cuts.

Classical California is among the many public media outlets that are scrambling to fill the budget gaps caused by the decision by the Trump White House and the Republican Congress to claw back the $1.1 billion in federal money allocated to the Corp. for Public Broadcasting.

The nonprofit entity administered the funds for public radio and TV stations, mostly affiliates of NPR and PBS.

Conservatives and libertarians have long called for the end of public funds supporting media organizations, especially ones they view as politically left-leaning. Trump has called NPR and PBS government-funded “left-wing propaganda.”

The Corp. for Public Broadcasting was also a vital revenue source for cultural and fine arts programming that often struggles to sustain itself in the commercial media marketplace.

Both KUSC and KDFC, which are owned and operated by the University of Southern California, play classical music 24 hours a day and are not NPR affiliates. They are the most-listened-to classical radio stations in the U.S.

Muhammad’s note to listeners included a plea for contributions to make up for the shortfall caused by the cuts.

“We remain committed to continuing to be your home for classical music,” Muhammad said. “As a listener-supported station, we need your support of KUSC and KDFC, now more than ever.”

They come in two colourways, an Olive green, or Fuschia, making the suitcase easy to spot on the conveyor belt.

There are three size options, from the smallest “cabin” size, to medium and large.

The suitcase includes four spinner wheels, that can be used with a push button trolley system.

It comes in a strong hard shell, with sturdy handles and zip insert that has an elastic clip closure to hold your belongings in place.

The product dimensions are H 55cm x W 40cm x D 20cm, at 2.5kg for the cabin case.

And the large case is H 76cm x W 50cm x D 28.5cm, weighing 3.8kg.

The dimensions are particularly important to note, after a leaked email showed staff across major airports in the UK would receive payments for every bag confiscated from easyJet passengers ahead of boarding.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has also considered bigger bonuses for staff who identify passengers with oversized bags.

The suitcase from Dunelm received an overall rating of 4.3 stars from customers.

Several weeks of consistent hot weather in the UK means Brits have had the chance to spend more time outdoors soaking up the sun.

If you’re lucky enough to own a garden, that could mean simply stepping outside your back door without having to traipse to a park.

To fully make the most of your space this summer you’ll need some furniture, and a sun lounger is ideal for relaxing.

This Dunelm lounger is a comfortable option if you’re having a drink or reading, but you can also recline it for sunbathing or even to enjoy a mid-afternoon snooze.

The removable head pillow gives some raised support for the neck, making it that extra bit more comfortable, especially if you’ll be spending a couple of hours relaxing in it.

The Amsterdam Charcoal Lounger is great for having in the garden, but it’s also versatile enough to take with you on days out.

Thanks to the lightweight mesh material and foldable design, you could pop the chair in the car to take camping or to the beach.

Dunelm had a home and garden sale that ended this weekend, but the sun lounger is one of multiple items still on sale amongst the full price garden furniture.

As it’s not part of a timed sale, it’s not clear how long the £23.50 saving will last, but as with many Dunelm deals, there is always a risk of selling out.

With a 4.7 star rating, shoppers are full of praise for the garden bargain.

One shopper wrote: ‘’Another superb garden chair.’’

‘’Comfortable, adjustable – no assembly needed and a hugely satisfying price.’’

Another was impressed with the practical features, commenting: ‘’Very comfortable reclining lounger, well constructed, with an all weather covering.’’

‘’Perfect for relaxing in garden – tempted to buy a second one.’’

A third felt the chair was good value, saying: ‘’Better, smarter and cheaper than the expensive ones at the garden centre.’’

However, they did note the size of the chair, describing it as: ‘’very wide so takes up more space.’’

As much as Brits love the sun, a heatwave can be uncomfortable, and if the current weather’s got you searching for a quick fix, it might be worth taking a look at the best portable air conditioners.

The heat can make sleep difficult too, and investing in one of the best cooling pillows could really help with getting a solid night’s rest.

World Bank slashes global economic outlook as trade tensions continue | World Bank

The World Bank has slashed its 2025 global growth forecast, citing trade tensions and policy uncertainty as the United States imposed wide-ranging tariffs that weigh on global economic forecasts.

On Tuesday, the bank lowered its projection for global gross domestic product (GDP) growth to 2.3 percent in its latest economic prospects report, down from the 2.7 percent that it expected in January. This is the most recent in a series of downgrades by international organisations.

In its twice-yearly Global Economic Prospects report, the bank lowered its forecasts for nearly 70 percent of all economies, including the US, China and Europe, as well as six emerging market regions, from the levels it projected just six months ago before US President Donald Trump took office.

“That’s the weakest performance in 17 years, outside of outright global recessions,” said World Bank Group chief economist Indermit Gill.

Global growth and inflation prospects for this year and next have worsened because of “high levels of policy uncertainty and this growing fragmentation of trade relations”, Gill added.

“Without a swift course correction, the harm to living standards could be deep,” he warned.

By 2027, the World Bank expects global GDP growth to average 2.5 percent in the 2020s, which would be the slowest rate in any decade since the 1960s.

The Trump effect

The gloomier projections come as Trump imposed a 10 percent tariff on imports from almost all US trading partners in April as well as higher rates on imports of steel and aluminium. He had initially also announced radically higher rates on dozens of these economies, which he has since suspended until early July.

Trump’s on-again off-again tariff hikes have upended global trade, increased the effective US tariff rate from below 3 percent to the mid-teens, its highest level in almost a century, and triggered retaliation by China and other countries.

He also engaged in tit-for-tat escalation with China, although both countries have hit pause on their trade war and temporarily lowered these staggering duties as well. But a lasting truce remains uncertain.

While the World Bank’s growth downgrade was proportionately larger for advanced economies, the bank cautioned that less wealthy countries have tricky conditions to contend with.

Commodity prices are expected to remain suppressed in 2025 and 2026, Gill said.

This means that some 60 percent of emerging markets and developing economies – which are commodity exporters – have to deal with a “very nasty combination of lower commodity prices and more volatile commodity markets”.

GDP downturn

By 2027, while the per capita GDP of high-income economies will be approximately where it was in pre-pandemic forecasts, corresponding levels for developing economies would be 6 percent lower.

“Except for China, it could take these economies about two decades to recoup the economic losses of the 2020s,” Gill cautioned.

Even as GDP growth expectations have been revised downwards, inflation rates have been revised up, he said, urging policymakers to contain inflation risks.

Despite trade policy challenges, however, Gill argued that “If the right policy actions are taken, this problem can be made to go away with limited long-term damage.”

He urged for the “differential in tariff and non-tariff measures with respect to the US” to be quickly reduced by other countries, starting with the Group of 20, which brings together the world’s biggest economies.

“Every country should extend the same treatment to other countries,” Gill stressed. “It’s not enough to just liberalise with respect to the US. It’s also important to liberalise with respect to the others.”

The World Bank said developing economies could lower tariffs on all trading partners and convert preferential trade deals into pacts spanning the “full range of cross-border regulatory policies” to boost GDP growth.

Generally, wealthier countries have lower tariffs than developing countries, which could be seeking to protect budding industries or have fewer sources of government revenue.

This month, the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development also slashed its 2025 global growth forecast from 3.1 percent to 2.9 percent, warning that Trump’s tariffs would stifle the world economy.

This came after the International Monetary Fund in April too cut its world growth expectations for this year on the effects of Trump’s levies, from 3.3 percent to 2.8 percent.

Major retailer slashes £165 off shed – add cheap storage to your garden this summer

Online store Buy Sheds Direct has cut the cost of a shed in its summer sale.

The storage solution has had its price slashed from £459.99 to £294.99 – that’s a saving of 35%.

The 6ft x 4ft wooden shed is ideal for storing garden essentials.

The shed is a compact garden addition for storing tools and other essentials.

6′ x 4′ Forest 4Life Double Door Pent
Wooden Shed £294.99 (was £459.99)

With most of the summer stretching out ahead of us, it’s a great time to get the garden set up and ready for frequent use, and a shed can really come in handy.

The Forest 4Life Windowless Double Door Pent Wooden Shed is on sale at Buy Sheds Direct, an online retailer that specialises in garden storage.

It’s described on the listing as ‘tough and durable’, with a timber roof design that rainwater runs off, and it’s also pressure-treated to avoid the problem of wood rot.

Thanks to the treatment, there’s a 25-year guarantee, which is great for peace of mind when you’re making a larger purchase.

Even the site’s most affordable sheds have impressive discounts, and you can now snap one up for under £300, while they can be much more costly elsewhere.

The size of shed you’d need depends on your garden and also your storage needs – for a few items like gardening tools and a lawnmower, the 6ft x 4ft size is probably big enough, without taking over your space.

It comes with a free Yale combination padlock worth £15 too, so you can start using the shed immediately without worrying about security.

There is an end date for the sale though, so you’ll need to be quick if you want to get yourself a new shed before the discounts come to a close on Monday (June 9).

You will need to put the shed together yourself, because it’s delivered as interchangeable panels which means you can choose the placement of the doors to suit the layout of your garden.

The UK’s unpredictable weather can’t be avoided, and the shed’s timber roof design allows for rainwater to run off easily.

Owning a garden shed means you can tuck away your BBQ, parasol or any garden furniture at a moment’s notice, without having to lug anything into the house.

The brand also sells tiny homes like log cabins, garden offices, and playhouses, which are ideal if you’re thinking about making the most of your outdoor space without costly house extensions or rearrangements.

FIFA slashes ticket prices for Inter Miami’s Club World Cup opener: Report | Football News

Football’s world governing body has reduced prices on thousands of tickets before tournament opener in Miami on June 14, despite the presence of football superstar Lionel Messi.

Hoping to fill a lot of empty seats, FIFA is reportedly slashing ticket prices for the June 14 Club World Cup opener hosted by Inter Miami.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that “tens of thousands” of seats at the 65,326-capacity Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, remain unsold for the 8pm ET match between football superstar Lionel Messi’s MLS club and Egyptian side Al Ahly.

FIFA rejected a suggestion that fewer than 20,000 tickets had been sold, insisting the number is “much higher” but declining to provide a specific total.

“We are introducing many new, successful clubs from all over the world to the world through this tournament being staged in the 11 cities across the United States,” FIFA said in a statement. “Overall, we anticipate great attendances throughout the competition for this first-ever edition – a tournament that we believe will grow edition-on-edition.”

As of Tuesday night, tickets for that game had dropped to $55 on Ticketmaster – half of what they were going for last month. The cheapest seat available after the tournament draw in December was $349 but had dropped to $230 by December, per The Athletic.

The 32-team FIFA Club World Cup runs through to July 13 and includes MLS clubs Inter Miami, Seattle Sounders and Los Angeles FC, plus global powerhouses like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

Lorraine, 65, has been appearing on ITV breakfast screens for over four decades.

She joined the original breakfast TV station TV-am in 1994 as its Scotland Correspondent.

When the Camden-based company lost its licence, she was one of only a few stars who made the switch to GMTV in 1993.

Since then she has been a mainstay fixture on ITV screens in various iterations of the morning format.

However, the commercial network has announced sweeping changes to its daytime output.

From January, Lorraine will only take to the airwaves for 30 weeks of the year and for only half an hour at a time.

Following the announcement, fears rose that the veteran presenter could quit the channel entirely.

However, she insisted that she was not quite done yet when she spoke to Tom Kerridge on the Proper Tasty podcast.

“I’ve been doing telly for over 40 years. It’s mad isn’t it? It’s absolutely crazy,” Lorraine remarked.

“I started in breakfast telly in 1984, and I’m still getting away with it. Extraordinarily.

Richard Madeley was facing GMB axe before crunch talks as another HUGE star ‘is set to leave ITV’ amid cuts bloodbath

“40 years in TV last year was incredible. I got a BAFTA. “Here’s a BAFTA for being alive.” I thought, “Hang on a minute, I’m not done yet”.’

However, the star did allude that she likes to do different projects away from her

She continued: “Not so much in the morning, but if I do a wee show on Channel 4, or The Last Leg, or something like that. You can be unleashed. And I quite like that.

“You do have to have a self-edit button, and I’m finding mine is not operating as much as it should.

ITV’s daytime TV schedule changes in full

Good Morning Britain will be extended by 30 minutes to run from 6am to 9.30am daily.

Lorraine will run from 9.30am-10am, on a seasonal basis for 30 weeks of the year.

During the weeks Lorraine is not on air, Good Morning Britain will run from 6am to 10am.

This Morning will remain in its 10am-12.30pm slot on weekdays throughout the year.

Loose Women will be in the 12.30-1.30pm slot, again on a seasonal basis for 30 weeks of the year.

The changes will take effect from January 2026.

Lorraine added: “So, when I’m sitting there and I look at something and I think, “Gosh, what an absolute k**b that person is,” or how silly they are, I say it and I don’t realise I’ve said it. So I have to watch.”

This comes after it was reported that Lorraine had refused an ‘insulting offer’ from bosses to sign a new contract.

A source explained that she declined the opportunity to merge her daytime show with Good Morning Britain, and was “prepared to walk away.”

A new role titled ‘Head of Lorraine’ has also been created to oversee the daytime changes, but the contract only lasts for 12-months.

Newsom proposes slashes funding to California newsrooms by $20 million

Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed slashing funding by 67% for a pioneering deal with Google to support struggling California newsrooms, citing financial pressures that have promoted wider budget cuts.

California newsrooms had expected to receive $30 million from the state as part of a deal brokered last year in which Google and the state would jointly contribute money over five years to support local newsrooms through a News Transformation Fund. The state Department of Finance confirmed Wednesday that California instead will pay out $10 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

“The sole reason for the reduction is more limited/fewer resources than projected in the January budget,” Department of Finance spokesperson H.D. Palmer said.

Newsom announced Wednesday that the state is facing an additional $12-billion budget shortfall next year. The revised $321.9-billion plan will also include a reduction in healthcare for low-income undocumented immigrants and a decrease in overtime hours for select government employees.

The deal was born of negotiations that began with a proposed funding bill written by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), which is known as the California Journalism Preservation Act. It would have required Google to pay into a fund annually that would have distributed millions to California news outlets based on the number of journalists they employ. The California News Publishers Assn., of which the Los Angeles Times is a member, backed the larger effort.

It was designed to aid newspapers that have seen their finances collapse in recent years, leaving fewer journalists to cover institutions and communities.

The proposal was modeled after a Canadian bill that has Google paying about $74 million per year. Google fought the bill, arguing its passage would force the company to remove California news from its platform, thus restricting access for Californians.

Instead, the state and Google agreed in August to provide nearly $250 million to newsrooms over five years, starting in 2025, with funding slated for two projects.

The second initiative was a $68-million pledge for Google to fund artificial intelligence in the form of a National AI Accelerator. The AI funding element of the deal drew sharp rebukes from Democratic lawmakers and journalists.

California had pledged $30 million in 2025 and $10 million for each of the next four years. Google agreed to an initial payment of $15 million in 2025 and $55 million in total into the journalism fund. Google also agreed to boost its own journalism programs with a separate $50-million grant.
