TV presenter’s apology slammed after ‘insensitive’ Ann Widdecombe remark on air

Carole Malone has hit out at Adam Boulton after the former Sky News presenter described Ann Widdecombe as a ‘spinster’ and ‘old maid’ on live television.

A former Sky News star has been criticised for comments he made about Ann Widdecombe by broadcaster Carole Malone.

The former Conservative politician and Reform UK spokesperson’s death aged 78 was announced on Friday, July 10. It was confirmed she was found dead at her Devon home the day before after sustaining serious injuries.

While her agents released a statement paying tribute, no cause of death has been given, and a police investigation has been ongoing. In the days that have followed her death, headlines have been focused on the investigation across all major news outlets.

However, one presenter has been slammed for his comments, and later issued an apology. Adam Boulton had described Strictly Come Dancing star Ann as a “spinster” and an “old maid”.

He said on Sky News: “She was very much a spinster, by the end I think you’d probably describe her as an old maid. Reportedly, she claimed that she was a virgin.”

After his comments on live TV, Boulton issued an apology, saying: “I was seriously wrong and insensitive in one of the several media appearances I made yesterday in reaction to the death of Ann Widdecombe. I got the timing and tone of my initial word portrait of her wrong.

“Of course I shared, and share, the horror at her murder and the respect for her remarkable and feisty political career. I also know that many people loved her for her subsequent showbiz stardom. Her untimely death is a horrible thing.

“My mistaken view was that in the context of rolling news coverage, I was being asked to contribute as an obituarist who has known her and interacted with her since the 1980s. This approach was premature.

“At no point was I expressing my personal feelings about her, that’s not what I do. I was discussing her life in the round, based on the record of known facts and what she has said about herself, along with some recollections of our personal interactions. My choice of words on the spur of the moment was clumsy. I did not intend to offend though obviously I did.”

Boulton went on to call himself a freelance contributor, and said he was “freely” issuing the apology after confessing “I got this badly wrong”. He also apologised to Sky News and Times Radio for the “unwarranted” criticism the outlets received over his “mistake”.

Among the criticism he has received, Carole Malone lashed out, writing on X: “You’re a very clever man. How could you not have known what you were saying as it was coming out of your mouth. Or are you really so lacking in compassion and sensitivity? Your apology is not so much about Ann but more about you saving your various work contracts.”

Malone elsewhere wrote on X, unrelated to Boulton’s apology: “All those cretinous savages gleefully celebrating the brutal murder of Ann Widdecombe – a 78 year old lady who spent her last moments on this earth in abject terror – there’s a special place in Hell for you all. The universe has a way of coming for morons like you!”

Mirror has approached Boulton’s representative for a comment. The latest from the investigation into Ann Widdecombe’s death has seen the police arrest a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Counter Terrorism Policing South East has said “new information and evidence has come to light” as they are leading the investigation. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also issued a statement saying: “The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon.”

Furious Katie Price hits back after being slammed as ‘utterly irresponsible’ by Meg Matthews for buying £2k dog in Dubai

KATIE Price has furiously hit back after Meg Matthews branded her “utterly irresponsible” for buying a £2,000 dog with husband Lee Andrews in Dubai.

The 48-year-old announced yesterday how she and Lee, 43, had dropped the huge sum of cash on a male pomsky, which is a mix between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian.

Following the news, Meg, 60, took to Instagram to slam Katie, writing: “Why buy a puppy when you don’t live in Dubai?

“This is utterly ridiculous, irresponsible… a husky mix in Dubai, heat training takes time [and] commitment.

“Do they have a house and garden/yard? Just heartbreaking, sends the wrong message.”

Katie wasted no time in responding to Meg’s words, commenting on her post:  “Am I missing something Meg?

Katie Price & Lee say ‘we’re having a baby boy’ as they buy £2k puppy in Dubai

“Go back through your messages to me, how nice you have always been, asking me for help and now this?

“You don’t know me personally so calm down. And Lee lives in Dubai, my husband.”

Katie and Lee excited announced their newest addition yesterday, with her telling fans: “Just like we signed for our marriage, we’ve signed for our baby.

Lee added: “We’re new owners of this baby boy.”

Katie jumped in, explaining: “We’ve got no kids but this is our baby boy.”

“He’s our first baby together,” she later added as she introduced the puppy to fans.

The couple have chosen to call the blue-eyed dog Dubaii – with an extra ‘i’ – as a nod to where he’s from.

It comes days after the death of one of Katie’s Sphynx cats and disappearance of two others – Eilleen and Doris.

Announcing the sad news on Cameo, Lee told a fan: “I love dogs, I love cats, I love animals. So does Kate, so we share that empathy. She’s got five Sphynxes actually. One has just passed away.

“Sorry, eight Sphynxes, five dogs. Eight Sphynxes, now seven, one passed away.”

Celebrity Gogglebox stars who have slammed show from being ‘sacked’ to ‘torture’ filming

Countless famous faces have appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox over the years – but for some, it appears working on the Channel 4 show left a rather bad taste in their mouths

A brand new episode airs tonight.

Celebrity Gogglebox has seen several famous faces come and go over the years – and for some of them, it seems they are not exactly fans of the programme…

The Channel 4 spin-off first aired in 2019 and has since established itself as one of the broadcaster’s most beloved programmes.

The forthcoming eighth series will welcome back several firm favourites, such as Vernon Kay and Paddy McGuinness, Nick Grimshaw and niece Liv, and Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan.

But for some former stars, it seems the show left a rather bad taste in their mouths, as since their exits they have not been afraid to air their thoughts on the programme.

Maureen Lipman

Coronation Street’s Maureen Lipman, who appeared on the show with friend Gyles Brandreth, spoke about her experience on the show in 2021. On Loose Women, Maureen was asked: “Are you not going to be on it any more?”

Laughing, she said: “I’ve seen all the male tackle I need to see for this lifetime to be honest. We had such a good time, but none of the clever things we said went into it. So no.”

Maureen had previously spoken to Radio Times about how being on the show was different to what she had imagined. She told the mag: “I’d seen Gogglebox and I thought, ‘Oh, [ours] is the grown-up version, is it?

“I’m going to go on, and make a lot of comment now about the oeuvre and ‘I did like his first trilogy, but then I felt in some ways that perhaps over the years…’ But it’s your reaction to 12 dangling willies they want.

“They’re searching for ways to make me go ‘Urgh!’ So I thought, ‘Well, actually, no, life is too short to watch a series of hopeless men dangle their bits and pieces in my direction. So I’m going’.”

Frank Skinner

Frank Skinner also didn’t hold back either when airing his thoughts on working on Celebrity Gogglebox. During an episode of his podcast Frank Off The Radio: The Frank Skinner Podcast in 2024, he even went as far as to liken his experience to that of tortured monkeys.

Speaking about his Isle of Man disaster and the TV show, he said: “You know when I said I didn’t enjoy doing the gig on the Isle of Man, well it was a glorious pleasure compared to filming Gogglebox.”

He continued: “There’s a place in Wareham in Dorset called Monkey World, and it’s beautiful because they’re often monkeys that have been rescued from unkindness on the continent, and a lot of Spanish, in particular, there’s a thing of having your photo taken with a monkey.” He added: “The way to make them behave – and you can see this when you get close – is they’ve got cigarette burns on their skin that they use to make them do what they want them to do. And doing Gogglebox was a very similar experience.”

When asked if he was exaggerating, he was adamant his claims were true as the show was heavily “produced.” He explained: “So you sit in a room – you only watch like ten minutes of a programme.”

Exposing the behind the scenes process further, he went on to say: “We’re sitting watching the telly and we start talking, and a voice says ‘Say something about his jacket’. Then it would stop, and they’d say ‘Can you not go into digressions, it’s funny if you keep it close to what’s actually happening’. And pretty soon I’m thinking ‘just please make this stop’. And when I left – I’d made it pretty clear in a politer way – I said ‘Sorry, I thought this was going to be like enjoyable’.”

Frank felt the constraints stifled the fun, saying: “It’s such a shame because I think we could have had a laugh and stuff. ” Despite his gripes, Frank did acknowledge the expertise behind the scenes: “But to be fair to them, they know how to make it – they’ve been making it for years.” However, it wasn’t all bad – Frank gave a shoutout to the kind team who treated him well: “The producer was a really nice guy, they were nice people, they got me fish and chips.”

Sheila Hancock

Dame Sheila Hancock first appeared on the star-studded Channel 4 spin-off series alongside pal Gyles and quickly became a fan favourite. However, she claimed in 2023 she was “sacked” for complaining about how much nudity she had to watch when Naked Attraction was the TV show of choice

The acting legend admitted she and Channel 4 bosses clashed over the racy clips which she had to comment on for the series.

She told The Mirror: “I used to love doing it with Gyles, but they sacked me from that. Well, they did not ask me back. I think it was because there were a lot of shows with penises in and because it went down [well] with the audience, they kept showing them to us.

“Eventually I phoned up the lady on the edit and said, ‘I am enjoying the show, but do you think we can have anything other than penises?’ and she was quite angry.”

Reach contacted Channel 4 for comment at the time.

Celebrity Gogglebox airs every Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.

Fury as UK airport hikes drop-off fees to £8 in move slammed as ‘disgusting’

ANOTHER UK airport has increased its drop-off fees in a move that has been slammed by passengers.

Dropping someone off at an airport can be pricey – and poses a risk of a hefty fine if you forget to pay the charge.

With many major UK airports hiking the price of their drop-off fees in recent months, Norwich Airport has now done the same.

The East Anglian travel hub operates flights to dozens of locations across the UK and Europe.

With airlines such as Ryanair, KLM, TUI and more in operation at the Norfolk airport, the hub sees thousands of passengers a week.

On June 1, the charge for drivers dropping travellers off was increased from £6 for a 30-minute stay, to £8 for just 20 minutes.

Badly-behaved Brits face being banned from flying for LIFE under new Labour rules

Now, the fee change is being criticised, with passengers and drivers calling it “disgusting” and “mad”.

Meanwhile, taxi operators are being forced to warn customers that the charge will be part of their cab bill when rides are booked.

Mark Streeter, boss of Norwich’s Courtesy Taxis, told Norwich Evening News: “The main annoyance from our side is that we tell customers it’s an extra £5 or so, and now it’s gone up with no warning. So either the customer or the driver has to pay more than expected.”

Norwich Airport has responded to explain that the drop-off fee increase is a result of growing business costs and worsening energy prices.

A spokesperson for Norwich Airport told The Sun: “We understand that no one welcomes increased charges. But our airport group is facing sharp rises in costs, including a tripling of business rates, higher employment costs such as National Insurance and rising energy costs.”

Admitting that there is no choice but to rely on the public to absorb some of the growing costs, the spokesperson added: “At the same time, we continue to invest millions of pounds in maintaining the airport infrastructure needed to provide an essential public service in our regions.

“We cannot keep absorbing these increased costs without passing some of the additional burden on to our customers.”

Norwich’s change in drop-off policy comes alongside Stansted Airport‘s similar changes.

The London airport took its 15-minute express drop-off charge from £7 to £10 in March, with stays of up to 30 minutes now costing £28 instead of £25.

Meanwhile, London Gatwick‘s fee for a 10-minute drop-off now costs £10, up £5 from when it was first introduced in 2021.

Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo slammed for sharing video of her cradling baby in backseat of car with no seatbelt on

MADE In Chelsea stars Jamie Laing and his wife Sophie Habboo have come under fire for not having their baby properly secured while riding in a car.

The couple earned the wrath of fans for a clip in a video montage tribute Jamie made of Sophie which showed her holding their son Ziggy, six months, in the back of a car while it drove at speed down a motorway.

It also appeared that while Ziggy was not restrained in his infant seat, Sophie was also not wearing a seatbelt.

If the footage was filmed while they travelled on a motorway in the UK, then they would have been in violation road safety rules.

Children must be “in the correct car seat for their height or weight until they reach 135 centimetres tall or their 12th birthday, whichever is first,” according to road rules.

A violation of the above rule could result in a £500 fine, though the rule does not apply if the infant is travelling in a licensed taxi.

There are some exemptions for wearing a seatbelt for adults, including some medical exemptions, but it is not known if these apply to Sophie.

A representative for Jamie declined to comment when approached by The Sun Online.

Jamie had posted the montage celebrating their son’s six month birthday, but to mainly pay tribute to Sophie and her achievements as a new mum.

However, their fans were not pleased about the baby not being in his car seat and let them know in the comments.

“Oh my goodness, you’re on a motorway, you’re not wearing a seatbelt and Ziggy is not in a car seat?!! Guys?!!! This is not good at all!!!” wrote one person.

Another added: “No seat belt with a baby are you for real.”

But some others stepped in to defend the couple and argued people should not judge them without knowing their circumstances.

“Everyone jumping on the carseat. What sad people you are, of all of the things you could get from this beautiful post you chose to judge her on that? Cos they aren’t allowed to have a misstep or a valid reason for not having it.”

A second person agreed: “Right, could also have been a taxi which makes it legal. Not everyone carries a car seat around with them.

Taking to the comments section of an Instagram post by Sky TV showing the trailer for Katie’s upcoming tell-all documentary, Katie: Nothing to Hide, Gail made a direct comment about the star.

Referring to Katie, Gail claimed: “The person who introduced me to one of her boyfriends and said ‘this is Gail. She used to be pretty when she had hairGoogle her. Thanks.’”

The comment has amassed nearly 100 likes to date as well as a flood of replies from other Instagram users.

One response said: “Whhhhhat?!,” in clear shock.

A second reads: “That must have been awful for you. I hope you’re okay x.”

A third person added: “So sorry she said that! You are beautiful.”

Gail was a model in the late 90s, most known for her pin-up content in “lad-mags” such as FHM.

This was the same decade when Katie launched her glamour modelling career under the pseudonym of Jordan.

She regularly starred in the pages of magazines and newspapers including The Sun, The Daily Star, FHM, Loaded, and Playboy.

Katie’s tell-all documentary is in the process of production, and is being made by Louis Theroux.

The four-part docu-series promises it will have “intimate access” to the model and the mini series will go “beyond the headlines”, with Sky already promising that it will be absolutely “jaw-dropping”.

Speaking about the production Arron Fellows, co-founder and creative director at Mindhouse, said: “Katie’s 30 years in the spotlight have been truly extraordinary.

“This series doesn’t shy away from – in Katie’s own words – ’the good, the bad and the ugly’; and this is an unexpected re-appraisal of a woman many people feel they have already figured out.

“The team have spoken to a range of contributors who have crossed paths with Katie at different junctures of her life – through the ups, the downs and everything in between.

“In doing so have crafted a series that is as jaw-dropping and unpredictable as it is tender and surprising. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

The series is set to air on Sky and streaming service NOW sometime this summer.
