NATALIE Imbruglia has candidly admitted she “ran out of money” after finding fame on Aussie soap Neighbours – and was forced to bunk in a basement.

The actress and singer, who played Beth Brennan in the hit series from 1992 to 1994, with a brief comeback in 2022, fell on hard times shortly after leaving Ramsay Street.

The Neighbours legend, who later went on to find fame in the music industry, told the Davina McCall Begin Again podcast she simply “ran out of money”.

Now 51, Natalie recalled trying to bag further acting jobs after moving to the UK, yet admitted “things didn’t fall into my lap”.

She told host Davina: “I went to England and I couldn’t get a visa to work as an actress and thats when they really cracked down on Neighbours stars getting English actors’ roles.

“And that was a hard time because I ran out of money.

“For a few years I was very famous from Neighbours and was doing appearances and appearing in clubs and signing autographs, and just getting wads of cash in envelopes and living like that.

“But that was the first time in my life where everything didn’t fall in my lap and so I just partied – but then the money ran out”.

The Torn hitmaker, who was in her Twenties at the time, talked of penning her first album and said: “I had run out of money and was living in the basement of someone’s house in Chelsea.

“Which was weird because I had no money and I am in Chelsea in this big mansion but I was just in the basement”.

Natalie admitted meditation and “a lot of conversations with God” had seen her through.

She released her debut album, Left of the Middle, in 1997.

It was the same year in which she released debut single Torn.

Previously, Natalie has spoken about her struggle to be taken seriously as a singer and said: “There was a lot of stigma attached to being in a soap. I thought I’d blown any chance of making a serious record because I had been in Neighbours.

“I turned down two record deals because they were very poppy. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but I knew I didn’t want to be manipulated. I may not have had a direction, but I wasn’t stupid.

“My profile dropped off and so did my bank balance, and that was the best thing that ever happened to me.

“I was forced to struggle, which is a normal, healthy part of growing up. I hadn’t gone through that.”

NATALIE Imbruglia has opened up on receiving new mental health diagnoses while managing perimenopause.

The 51-year-old Aussie star who is best known for her hit single, Torn, revealed she was diagnosed with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

She was also dealing with the effects of perimenopause which made her “really angry” and would contribute to her anxiety before performing.

“You name it, there’s a sprinkle of it. They’re just labels. It’s not a negative, it’s my superpower,” she told The Sunday Times.

“But there’s a particular thing about my neurodiversity that’s hard for me to accept, which is how I get when I’m nervous before a show. Perimenopause made it worse.”

Natalie added: “Let’s just say it was a grieving process. I was really angry. I fell off a cliff. It felt like someone had taken some of my personality.”

The singer and actress reached out to TV presenter Davina McCall, who has been a public menopause campaigner, for advice after battling feelings of “anger and anxiety.”

Natalie is now on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) which has helped her symptoms and she’s glad the topic has become less “shameful or taboo.”

Perimenopause refers to the time during which your body makes the natural transition to menopause, thus marking the end of a woman’s reproductive years.

A woman may begin transitioning sometime in her 40s. However, this transitional period happens at a different age for every woman, and it could happen as early as mid-30s.

Natalie rose to fame on Neighbours in the early 1990s and in 1997 kicked off her pop career with a cover of the Ednaswap song Torn.

Natalie has also appeared in the films Johnny English, Closed for Winter and Underdogs.

She has sold 10 million records worldwide, and is believed to have a net worth of around £10 million.

In 2019, Natalie revealed she had given birth to a son, Max Valentine whom she welcomed via IVF and a sperm donor.

EASTENDERS legend Natalie Cassidy has revealed her young daughter had to be rushed to hospital after smashing her arm in a terrifying accident.

The actress, 43, said she felt like she had a “nervous breakdown” when she was told Joanie, nine, had slipped over at school — just weeks after having metal plates surgically removed from the same arm following a previous injury.

“Joanie’s broken her arm again. Same arm — smashed to pieces. General anaesthetic, same operation,” she said today.

Natalie shares Joanie with her fiancé Marc Humphreys, a cameraman she met on the set of EastEnders in 2014. She is also mum to Eliza, 15, from her previous relationship with Adam Cottrell.

The actress, who left the BBC One soap last year after playing Sonia Fowler on and off since 1993, said the accident happened just as the family were settling in for what they had hoped would be a relaxing few days at home in Hertfordshire.

“I’d done a little bit of work in the morning at home,” she explained. “[Marc] went outside, put the paddling pool up, cut all the grass — thinking we’re going to have a few days, like a mini holiday, at home.

“And then the phone rang. She slipped over in the hall, before doing PE. I’m speechless. It’s so traumatic.”

Speaking on her podcast, Life With Nat, which she hosts with Marc, Natalie said this was not the first time Joanie had been through surgery on her left arm.

“A few years ago she broke her arm, and it was a clean break,” she said.

“She then broke it again, they put all the metal work in. And then eight weeks ago, she went under general anaesthetic, had it all out – and has done it again.”

She added: “I felt I was going to have a nervous breakdown, actually. I’m being really honest here. I really fell to pieces. I was not in a good place. Just her little body – and the medication and the trauma of it all.”

The repeated injuries have led the family to ask whether something more might be behind them. 

Natalie said they believed “some sort of deficiency” was causing Joanie’s frequent fractures.

She said: “But she’s had full blood tests, and everything is in range. It’s absolutely perfect. The consultant actually said, ‘I do think it’s just really bad luck.’”

Their latest NHS hospital stay took place during last week’s record-breaking heatwave, when the Met Office issued a rare red extreme heat warning and temperatures climbed close to 40C across parts of England.

“The hospital was quite warm for the few days we were in there,” Natalie admitted. “The staff… they’re not moaning, they’re laughing, they’re joking. Just wonderful, wonderful people. We were so well looked after again. It’s like a little trip, now. It’s like being in a hotel!”

The injury also means the family now face a string of complications around their upcoming holiday. Natalie said Joanie will need a waterproof cover to swim, and that she will have to arrange medical clearance for her to fly with a cast on.

Their trips to hospital have become so frequent that staff now recognise Joanie.

Marc said: “The anaesthetist actually knew her.” Natalie added: “I went down to the theatre. I said, ‘hello, Barbara.’ I mean, who, in their right mind, knows the people in the hospital?”
