Japan executes by hanging ‘Twitter killer’ who murdered 9 | Death Penalty News

Takahiro Shiraishi was hanged for the murders of eight women and one man whose body parts he concealed in his small apartment.

Japan has executed a man who was found guilty of killing and dismembering nine people he made contact with on social media, the first use of capital punishment in the country in nearly three years.

Takahiro Shiraishi was hanged on Friday after he was sentenced to death for the 2017 murders of eight women and one man in his apartment in Zama city in Kanagawa near Tokyo.

He was dubbed the “Twitter killer” as he had contacted his victims via the social media platform, now known as X.

Shiraishi admitted to committing the murders after reaching out and offering to help people – who were contemplating suicide – to die. He had stashed bits of the bodies of his nine victims in coolers around his small apartment, according to media reports.

Justice Minister Keisuke Suzuki, who authorised Shiraishi’s hanging, said he made the decision after careful examination of the case, taking into account the convict’s “extremely selfish” motive for crimes that “caused great shock and unrest to society”.

The execution on Friday was the first in Japan since July 2022 of a man sentenced to death for a stabbing rampage in Tokyo’s Akihabara shopping district in 2008.

It was also the first time the death penalty was carried out since Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s government was inaugurated last October.

Last September, a Japanese court acquitted Iwao Hakamada, who had spent the world’s longest time on death row. The court found he was wrongfully convicted of crimes committed nearly 60 years ago.

One of the highest-profile executions in Japan was carried out in 2018 of the guru Shoko Asahara and 12 former members of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult, which orchestrated the 1995 sarin gas attacks on Tokyo’s subway system that killed 14 people and made thousands ill.

Capital punishment is carried out by hanging in Japan, and prisoners are notified of their execution just hours before it is carried out, which has long been decried by human rights groups for the stress it puts on death-row prisoners.

Japan and the United States are the only two members of the Group of Seven industrialised economies to retain the death penalty.

There is strong public support for the practice in Japan. A government survey in 2024 of 1,800 respondents found that 83 percent viewed the death penalty as “unavoidable”.

‘My sick killer boyfriend asked me for a kiss before forcing me to hear him stabbing my mum’

Damian Homer, 51, was convicted of murder and attempted murder in November 2024 after launching a brutal attack on his partner and her mum while their two young children were at home

Wendy Francis and Stacey Hill

A quiet spring evening in a Worcester suburb erupted into chaos when police and paramedics swarmed a residential street, responding to a harrowing double stabbing on March 2, 2024.

Inside the house, Damian Homer stood at the door, blood staining his t-shirt. His partner Stacey Hill and her mother Wendy Francis lay injured on the floor – both stabbed in a frenzied attack that left one dead. The horrifying details of the case have been revealed in full in the BBC Two docuseries Murder 24/7.

Homer had launched a violent assault on Stacey and Wendy in a terrifying outburst, even pausing mid-attack to ask Stacey – bleeding and helpless – for a kiss. As she lay critically wounded, Stacey described hearing the “noise the knife made in my mum”.

Wendy, 61, had rushed to the home after her daughter called in fear, having seen the reflection of a knife in Homer’s pocket in their mirrored wardrobe.

When officers arrived, they restrained Homer against the wall. As he was arrested for attempted murder, he claimed: “Stacey went to stab me, then Wendy came in and they both tried to stab me. I had to protect myself… it’s a good job I did otherwise I’d be the one dead.”

Paramedics found Stacey surrounded by blood, urgently asking them to check on her mother and her two children who had been inside the house at the time. Police carried the two young children to safety, telling them: “Keep your eyes tight, tight, tight” as they were taken past the bodies.

While Stacey, 38, was rushed to hospital, Wendy went into cardiac arrest. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at 9:18pm on March 2, 2024.

In police interviews the following morning, Homer claimed he loved Stacey and described a domestic argument escalating. He alleged Stacey tried to grab a knife first, which he took and placed in his pocket. Then he claimed Wendy stormed in and jumped on him, prompting him to draw the knife:

“We fell over and the knife went into her. Stacey was shouting, and she went to grab another knife… and came towards me. I launched at her. And she just froze on the spot.”

But his version immediately raised suspicions. He referred to a “second knife” Stacey had supposedly grabbed – yet when police searched the property, no second knife was found.

With Stacey in critical condition and Wendy dead, investigators turned to other sources. The couple’s children – now in the care of relatives – gave troubling accounts. A social worker noted they played with dolls, identifying one as “Daddy… he’s bad”.

One child said: “One of them got blood on Daddy’s T-shirt, and they were screaming. Daddy was in the kitchen, Mummy was lying down on the kitchen floor, and Nanny’s blood was dripping. Dad was throwing the knife he’d got in his hand, and it hit both of them.”

Homer’s violent past also began to emerge. His former boss Clair recalled his threatening outburst during a disciplinary meeting: “How fing dare they… if I find out it’s you I’m going to fing hurt you.”

He also had a suspended sentence for assaulting Stacey in 2020.

Detectives reviewed the couple’s mobile phones, uncovering evidence of a deteriorating relationship. On the day of the attack, Stacey had texted her mother: “I’ve had to come upstairs… believe me when I say I’m done.”

In another message to Homer, she wrote: “Find somewhere else to live… you’re lucky I ain’t called the police on you.”

To which he replied: “Lol. Only if you buy me out.” Concerned, Stacey’s aunt phoned emergency services:

“She’s just told me her chap’s got a knife in his pocket. Please get there quick.”

When Stacey was finally able to speak, she gave a harrowing account of that night. After a day out at a garden centre, Homer started drinking and grew increasingly aggressive. She went upstairs to get away, and spotted a knife in his pocket via their mirrored wardrobe:

“I said to my auntie, ‘Call the police, he’s got a knife.’ I called my mum and said, ‘Mum, Damo’s got a knife and I think he’s going to kill me.’”

Stacey tried to leave, but Homer pulled her back and began assaulting her. “He was swinging me around the kitchen and punching me in the head. I heard my mum come through the door and say, ‘Get your hands off my f***ing babbi.’ I breathed a sigh of relief – my hero had come to save me.”

But Homer didn’t stop. Instead, he pulled out the knife.

“We both ended up curled up on the floor… he pulled the knife out of his back pocket and stabbed my mum in the left side of her chest, for ages. All I could hear was the noise the knife made in my mum.”

“I tried to get on my mum to stop any more stab wounds being inflicted. He started panicking and as he did that, he came down to me and asked me for a kiss.”

Stacey, stabbed in the chest with a collapsed lung, was losing consciousness. But her thoughts were still with her mother:

“I kept asking about my mum but I could tell by the look on their face that it was bad news.”

Stacey’s detailed testimony, along with the children’s accounts, forensic evidence, and Ring doorbell footage capturing Wendy’s final moments, left police confident Homer’s story was false. He was charged with murder and attempted murder.

Though he initially claimed self-defence, Homer later pleaded guilty and was sentenced in November 2024 to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 20 years.

“Everybody loved Damo,” Stacey reflected. “But when you were living with him 24/7, the mask started to come away. The first time he hit me, he said sorry. But there was no point in ever being happy, because I knew it wouldn’t last.”

“The biggest thing for me was losing my mum. But every time I think about giving up, I look at what my mum did for me. She saved my life and I know now what I have to do for my kids. I have to be the mum to them, that she was to me.”

Immune-boosting drug ‘could change the world’ for cancer patients – warding off killer for years

AN immune boosting drug can stave off throat cancer for years longer than current treatments, a trial found.

Recovering head and neck cancer patients treated with pembrolizumab, also known as Keytruda, remained cancer-free for an average of five years.

Drugs rationing bosses have given the green light for certain lung cancer patients to receive the immunotherapy drug Keytruda

2

Immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab could help cancer patients live longer, scientists sayCredit: AP:Associated Press

That was twice as long as the 2.5 years for patients given regular chemotherapy.

The risk of tumour cells spreading elsewhere in the body was also 10 per cent lower, the Institute for Cancer Research in London found.

Pembrolizumab is an immunotherapy that is given before and after surgery.

It works by boosting the body’s own ability to seek and destroy cancer cells.

Professor Kevin Harrington, trial leader author from the ICR and consultant oncologist at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, said: “For patients with newly-diagnosed, locally-advanced head and neck cancer, treatments haven’t changed in over two decades.

“Immunotherapy has been amazingly beneficial for patients with cancer that has come back or spread around the body but, until now, it hasn’t been as successful for those presenting for the first time with disease which has spread to nearby areas.

“This research shows that immunotherapy could change the world for these patients.

“It significantly decreases the chance of cancer spreading around the body, at which point it’s incredibly difficult to treat.

“The results of this trial show that pembrolizumab dramatically increases the duration of disease remission – for years longer than the current standard treatments.”

Head and neck cancer refers to a group of cancers that can develop anywhere in the head or neck, including the mouth, the oesophagus, the space behind the nose, the salivary gland, and the voice box.

Common bacteria in the mouth can ‘melt up to 99% of cancer cells’ and could lead to new treatments

Standard care, which includes surgery to remove tumours followed by radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy, has not changed for these patients in more than 20 years, according to researchers.

The global Keynote-689 trial was carried out at 192 sites in 24 countries, and involved 714 patients.

Some 363 people received pembrolizumab followed by standard care, with the remainder receiving standard care only.

Pembrolizumab works by targeting a protein known as PD-L1, which is found on T cells and helps the immune system recognise and fight cancer.

By blocking this protein, the treatment helps the immune system fight cancer more effectively.

The treatment is already approved for use on its own or in combination with chemotherapy for patients with a certain type of head and neck cancer that has come back or spread around the body.

The trial, which is being presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Asco) annual meeting, found cancer returned in half the patients given pembrolizumab after five years, compared with two-and-a-half years in those receiving standard care.

After three years, the risk of cancer returning somewhere else in the body was also 10 per cent lower among those on pembrolizumab.

‘It could change the world’

“It works particularly well for those with high levels of immune markers,” Prof Harrington said

“But it’s really exciting to see that the treatment improves outcomes for all head and neck cancer patients, regardless of these levels.”

Around 13,000 Brits develop head and neck cancers each year and 4,200 die from them.

Many tumours are linked to smoking.

Symptoms vary depending on the type of cancer but include: persistent ulcers, white or red patches, lumps, sores and pain.

He said it is “kind of crazy” to be told that he looks like the infamous stalker and serial killer and the amount of messages he gets about it is “insane”.

Nikita even claims women on dating apps ask him to kidnap them and lock them in a cage – like Joe does in the show.

Some women will even send him their address for him to go over – but insists he’s never taken anyone up on the offer.

Nikita, a content creator, from Dover, Kent, said: “I have a lot of family and friends say that I look like Joe from You.

“A lot of people tell me that I have a serial killer vibe, which is kind of scary as I am not trying to be a serial killer.

“People really love the idea of being stalked by Joe.

“I will be sent locations, people will ask me to stalk them and lock them in a glass cage.”

Nikita started posting videos on TikTok three weeks ago, and his messages were soon flooded by strangers who said he bears striking resemblance to Joe Goldberg.

He said he found it “crazy” to be likened to a serial killer but has leaned into the stereotype.

Nikita said: “I have had a lot of people in my life who tell me I look like Joe.

“So I thought I would start posting online, it has been kind of crazy.

“I get thousands upon thousands of messages every day of people telling me that I look like Joe and asking me to stalk them.”

Nikita – who is single – says women on dating apps will often message him with their location.

He says he will often jokingly tell them that he is Joe’s brother.

“I will leave the house and people come up to me asking me to stalk them.

“In all honesty, I don’t think people would enjoy it as much as they think they would.

“I think he is really bad, but all the girls seem to be fascinated by this serial killer, which is really messed up.”

The final season of You

IN the fifth and final series, which is now streaming, viewers see Joe embarking on an affair with a young woman named Bronte, played by Madeline Brewer.

They meet after she gains employment at his bookstore but it soon becomes clear that she has an ulterior motive after she developed suspicions that Joe was responsible for the death of her close friend.

Penn Badgley reprises his role of Joe Goldberg, the serial killer who has gotten away with numerous murders.

The show is based on the book series by Caroline Kepnes.

You started out on Lifetime, after Netflix originally passed on it.

But, with low ratings on the cable channel, the streaming network picked it up and saw massive success.

The Silent Killer: Why Every Industrial Zone Needs A Carbon Monoxide Gas Detector

Most of us don’t even know that carbon monoxide (CO) is one of the prominent causes of workplace poisoning and the resulting fatalities globally. Our industries are filled with machinery and processes that emit carbon monoxide, the silent killer. To prevent this silent killer, whose small amount can also be fatal, our industries should employ a Carbon Monoxide (CO) Gas Detector.

What is carbon monoxide? Remember this: it is a highly poisonous, colorless, and odorless byproduct that human beings can’t detect without actually getting poisoned. A carbon monoxide gas detector helps humans identify a potential CO gas leak so we can take necessary preventative actions.

So how does a carbon monoxide gas detector actually “know” when CO is present? Most industrial-grade CO detectors use what’s called an electrochemical sensor. Inside the sensor, there’s a small chamber with two electrodes and an electrolyte. When carbon monoxide gas enters the chamber, it reacts with the chemicals inside and causes a small electric current to flow.

Electrochemical CO sensor cross-section, illustrating electrodes, electrolyte, and gas diffusion layer. Current output is proportional to CO concentration. Image credit: gasdog.com

Here’s the smart part: the strength of that current is directly proportional to the amount of CO in the air. So the more CO you have, the stronger the signal gets. The detector reads this signal in real time, and if it crosses a preset safety threshold, it triggers the alarm. This type of sensor is highly accurate, reliable over time, and doesn’t produce false alarms easily, which makes it ideal for use in busy, high-risk industrial environments.

To know the intensity of the damage this silent killer can cause, know that even a small amount can inflict irreversible brain damage or sudden death. Yes, death! Read on to know why you need to install a CO gas detector in your industry.

Reason 1 – This Threat Is Invisible And Demands Vigilance

Carbon monoxide (CO) gas detectors are necessary in industrial zones because of the basic nature of this gas. Can’t be seen! This hidden peril is dominating the poisonous gas market because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, like air. You will think that you are breathing fresh air, but it can be the lethal CO gas that damages your health within seconds.

Human senses are without any doubt incapable of seeing through this looming danger as it goes undetected. Our industry workers are focused on their work in the sounds and smells of various industrial processes. Not a single employee can notice this gas that is invisible in such a busy setting. They won’t get any sensory cues and will be breathing lethal levels of CO.

We are not just saying out of the blue, we have read a report by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that:

“Because it is colorless, odorless, and non-irritating, people can be exposed to CO without warning.”

This invisibility is the main reason it begins to poison you without you even realizing it. Workers inhale it, which gets mixed up with hemoglobin in their red blood cells. This forms carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in your body. This means oxygen won’t get transported throughout the body.

Initially, a person won’t understand what is happening to their bodies. They will consider the poison symptoms as common ailments. These common symptoms include flu, fatigue, headache, nausea, etc. As the person doesn’t understand, staying in this state for a bit longer worsens symptoms. In the worst-case scenario, the person will suffer severe incapacitating symptoms such as confusion, loss of coordination, chest pain, and even loss of consciousness.

But this works faster than we think, and before you understand, you are about to collapse. Given the lack of detectability, industrial settings must have a Carbon Monoxide (CO) Gas Detector.

Reason 2 – Almost Every Industry Produces CO Risks

This is not an exaggeration, but the fact that the nature of many industrial operations includes practices that produce CO, whether in small or high amounts. This byproduct of many industrial processes comes from specific sources, and understanding its emission levels is important to stay safe.

First comes the Internal Combustion Forklifts that are usually found in warehouses or factories. These are fueled by propane, gasoline, or diesel, which go through incomplete combustion and produce high amounts of CO as a byproduct. To back this up, we did some research and found that propane-based forklifts produce CO levels ranging from a few parts per million (ppm) to well over 100 ppm. These levels can vary in accordance with engine maintenance, load, and ventilation.

In fact, there is a standard limit to ensure workers’ safety set by OSHA, which is called the permissible exposure limit (PEL), and for carbon monoxide, it is 50 ppm as an 8-hour TWA. In poorly ventilated areas, even an exposure of this amount can be hazardous.

Then comes the industrial furnaces, where incomplete combustion can produce CO. Natural gas, propane, or fuel oil are combusted in these furnaces, and if it is incomplete because of the wrong air-fuel mixture, the burner will malfunction and emit CO. Lastly, there are chemical reactions in industries, for example, in welding processes where oxidation of organic materials takes place, CO gas is emitted in huge amounts.

This makes the installation of a carbon monoxide gas detector inevitable to ensure the safety of industry occupants.

Reason 3 – Early Detection To Prevent Severe Health Consequences

As we have already told you, we know how lethal CO can be for human lives, now it’s about time we talk about preventative measures. As the famous saying goes, “prevention is better than cure.” It is important to install carbon monoxide (CO) gas detectors in industrial zones to reduce the risk of fatalities. These detectors create a chain of measures to avoid risk and long-term health damage from CO poisoning.

For example, it will detect the CO gas levels. Many companies, including Gas Dog, have developed upgraded CO gas detectors designed specifically for industrial environments where early detection can save lives.

These detectors use electrochemical sensors, which are known for their high accuracy and low false alarm rates, making them ideal for noisy, high-interference settings like warehouses or factories. They can detect carbon monoxide concentrations from 0 up to 1000 ppm, with a fine sensitivity of just 1 ppm—so even small leaks won’t go unnoticed. What sets these devices apart isn’t just detection, but smart functionality. Most models come with built-in data logging, which helps safety teams monitor exposure levels over time and analyze trends after an event.

And when danger strikes, they respond fast. With audible alarms, visual warning lights, These devices have pre-determined safety thresholds that, upon breaching, the alarm goes on. And, these thresholds have sensory triggers that turn on the alert mode with loud alarm sounds, loud enough to wake even the sleeping workers in every nook and corner. The alarm makes a sound around 85 decibels that is louder than normal industrial noise levels. Once the alarm is on, the entire setting is evacuated to identify the source of the leak and take necessary steps to make the setting gas-free.

We all know that regulatory bodies mandate the installation of a carbon monoxide gas detector in an industrial setting. The occupational safety regulations, like OSHA and EU-OSHA, have also mandated the control of the emission of hazardous gases like CO to ensure safe air quality.

It is the responsibility of industry owners to implement a proper CO monitoring system so that the death toll from CO poisoning is reduced and a safer environment is provided to employees. If the employer fails to implement these safety standards, they will face legal liabilities, lawsuits, and regulatory fines.

Conclusion

Most industries avoid this necessity of safety protocol and face legal actions. Industries simply want to avoid the hassle of installation. However, there are portable CO gas detectors for industrial use that are easy to install and maintain. The main purpose of these regulations is to ensure the safety of your workforce, as every life matters. Protect your workforce before it’s too late. There’s some big moments ahead on Emmerdale including a wedding, a killer discovery and a sad cancer diagnosis.

One killer’s nightmare faces coming true, as a special set of episodes, with a change to the usual format, sees him face his nightmares. Elsewhere another killer could also be exposed as a newcomer demands answers.

It’s teased one character goes missing after another discovery, while fans can also expect two men at war and some surprises. We’ll start with the big wedding, as killer John Sugden risks being exposed.

He’s left in a panic when he realises that the week of his wedding to Aaron Dingle could go very wrong, as the lake is being dredged and his ex Aidan Moore has woken from his coma. It seems there’s more to be told about what led to Aidan being in a coma for years, with it believed he would never regain consciousness.

But next week it’s confirmed that he’s awake, and soon John is fearful Aidan will expose his lies and the truth about their past. Then there’s the fact the lake is being dredged due to the slurry leak, caused by John.

He framed Mackenzie Boyd for this but his actions could be about to haunt him. Viewers know John killed Nate Robinson last September and no one in the village knows.

That could be about to change though, as with the lake needing clearing and Nate’s body being in said lake surely it’s only a matter of time before the murder is finally exposed. With that and Aidan and Aaron having jitters, will the big day go ahead? Will they even make it to the vows?

Viewers will be treated to multiple outcomes before seeing what actually happens, with each episode next week forming the same day. We will see John’s fears come to life before finding out whether or not the pair get married.

John even tries to do a runner at one point, caught out by Aaron. Aaron also follows him to the hospital after seeing him head there with Cathleen in his wedding suit – with one moment seeing the wedding called off.

John pleads his case, while one character, Mack, appears to be missing. The ceremony begins, but will it go ahead without any further drama?

Speaking of Mack, he finds himself caught up in Ross Barton’s drama with new brother Lewis. After the pair try to steal Lewis’ cannabis plants from his secret farm in the attic of his home, Lewis catches them out thanks to a camera app and wants answers.

Ross gets Lewis’ keys and manages to convince Mack to help him, with them soon finding the farm in the attic. But when Lewis gets an alert on his phone that suggests an intruder is in the attic he prepares to confront him.

He realises it’s Mack and calls out Ross, wanting an explanation from both of them. But Lewis agrees to let Mack go on one condition, he wants to know the truth about his his mother Emma Barton died.

It seems Ross could finally tell him how Moira Dingle was the true killer, as she’s been fearing would happen. But if Ross does expose her, how will she react and will Lewis let her get away with it?

Elsewhere next week there’s worrying scenes as Sarah Sugden is diagnosed with the early stages of cervical cancer. As she heads to the hospital for her biopsy results alone after recent tests, she’s left struggling to take in the diagnosis.

She’s undeterred over her plans to have a baby through IVF though and learns this still could be possible. Sarah bumps into ex Jacob Gallagher and she tries to put on a brave face, only to break down and confess her diagnosis.

He comforts her but when he realises Sarah found out due to her IVF plans, he’s pretty blunt and shares his clear disapproval of her having a child given her life-limiting health condition, fanconi anaemia. He explains the impact of losing a mum especially when you are younger, before calling her selfish – but how will Sarah react?

Finally next week, and things continue to boil over for enemies Billy Fletcher and Joe Tate. As Billy continues to accuse ex Dawn Taylor of having feelings for Joe after their affair, she has enough with the constant battles – leading to a plan from Joe.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .

New species of dog-sized killer dinosaur that roamed Earth 220m years ago discovered – but its name isn’t too catchy

A NEW dog-sized dinosaur species that roamed the Earth 220 million years ago has been discovered.

The Maleriraptor kuttyi is thought to be one of the earliest killer dinosaurs in history.

The now-extinct dinosaur is believed to have lived some 220 million years ago – during the Triassic period.

The small but mighty beast could grow to a height of 3.2 feet and a length of 6.5 feet – about the size of a large-breed dog such as a Great Dane.

And the creature was one of the earliest known carnivorous dinosaurs, along with the rest of the Herrerasauria family.

Dr. Martín Ezcurra from the Argentina’s Natural Science museum said: “Herrerasaurs represent the oldest radiation of predatory dinosaurs.”

The fossilised dinosaur bones were discovered more than in Telangana, India forty years ago.

But only now have scientists identified exactly what species these bones belonged to.

Herrerasauria fossils were previously found in South and North America.

But the new bombshell discovery has proved that the creatures roamed far more of the Earth than previously thought.

And the dinosaurs in India are believed to have outlived those elsewhere.

Scientists believe this might be because India had a similar climate to South America during the Triassic period.

This comes after a giant horned dinosaur species was unearthed in Egypt.

The predatory dinosaur species, named Tameryraptor markgrafi, was originally discovered in 1914 by Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach who died in 1952.

The 95million-year-old skeleton was excavated in the Bahariya Oasis in Egypt before it was stored in the Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Geology in Munich, Germany.

But the remains were destroyed along with other Egyptian discoveries when Munich was bombed in World War Two.

Tragically the only remnants of the dinosaur discovery were Dr Stromer’s notes, illustrations of the bones and black and white photographs of the skeletons.

But Dr Stromer’s records have now been reanalysed in a new study.

Maximilian Kellermann, the study’s first author said: “What we saw in the historical images surprised us all.

“The Egyptian dinosaur fossil depicted there differs significantly from more recent Carcharodontosaurus found in Morocco.”
