The TWA Hotel at New York’s JFK Airport is a luxury plane-themed hotel that was once a disused airport terminal – transformed into a stunning hotel after a $265million (£200m) renovation

A former airport terminal that sat abandoned for years has been transformed into a stunning aviation-themed luxury hotel — following a jaw-dropping $265million (approximately £200m) restoration to revive it to its former glory.
The TWA Hotel flung open its doors in 2019, boasting a rooftop infinity pool with breathtaking views over an active runway at New York’s JFK International Airport. Originally serving as a TWA flight terminal, the iconic building was designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen before it closed its doors in 2001, only to be reborn 18 years later.
The hotel, which occupies the TWA Flight Center, now comprises two buildings at each end of the former terminal, offering 512 rooms for guests to choose from.
Designers painstakingly worked to recreate its appearance when it first opened back in 1962, hailed by the Landmarks Preservation Commission as “one of the great masterpieces of expressionistic modern design”.
Earlier this year, it was recognised as one of the top five best airport hotels on the planet at the prestigious Skytrax World Airport Awards.
The original terminal now serves as the lobby for the four-star hotel, which also features a round-the-clock 10,000 square feet gym — claiming the title of the world’s largest hotel gym — alongside a selection of restaurants.
One of the most striking highlights is a 1958 Lockheed Constellation aircraft that has been cleverly converted into a cocktail lounge, with an aviation history museum also housed within the hotel.
Time magazine previously featured it on their coveted list of “The World’s Greatest Places of 2019”, and one recent visitor was British travel YouTuber Hannah Ricketts.
She explained that she was keen to visit the hotel to get a taste of what the golden era of air travel felt like during the 1950s and 60s.
Upon reaching the lobby, she told her 489,000 subscribers that it was one of the “coolest entrances” she had ever seen.
Spotting a vintage Coca Cola machine, she remarked that it felt like stepping back in time, before adding that the place was far more impressive than she had anticipated.
She went on to reveal that she paid around $400 (approx £300) for a room with a deluxe runway view. Hannah confirmed this included taxes, with standard rooms starting at roughly $200.
Gazing out from her room, she exclaimed: “This looks so much better in person. I feel like the camera isn’t going to do it justice.”
She said it felt like being on the set of Mad Men, describing the building as “utterly stunning”, packed with period details that truly transported you back to the 1960s.
“I’ve never been anywhere like this in my life,” she added. “And it’s obviously pristine where it’s been refurbed. It’s almost surreal. Wow.”
The travel vlogger described the swimming pool as “insane”, though pointed out that it cost $25 (approx £19) to use, even as a guest.
She then savoured a Mile-High Margarita aboard the converted cocktail lounge plane, telling her audience: “Maybe you’re a Brit watching this and you’re going to come back from JFK, back to the UK, back to reality, back to work. If you want to plan this, it’s a really positive end to a trip.”
Her sole gripe was with the food, which she rated a 5/10, though she described the overall experience as immersive and one she would happily repeat.
Summing up her one-night stay, she said: “This is a four-star hotel, I would say this is literally better than quite a lot of the five-star hotels we’ve been looking at.”
MADONNA is being lined up to make a superstar appearance at London Pride on Saturday.
She has long been a celebrated figure in the LGBTQ+ community, and kicked off Pride Month with a surprise showing in New York last month.

London Pride, which is expecting 1.8million people, will take place at locations across the centre of the capital, with acts including Beth Ditto and MNEK booked to play the main stage in Trafalgar Square.
And my music moles have told me that is where they are expecting Madge to pop up.
My insider explained: “Madonna is a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has been a very vocal campaigner for decades.
“Organisers are playing it by ear in case of any last-minute changes but as it stands, Madonna is primed to come out on the main stage.
“She isn’t going to be performing like she did in New York. It’s more her coming out, speaking to the crowd and then heading off.
“They’re expecting absolute pandemonium if they pull it off.
“But it would be incredible for everyone going to the Pride event in London.”

Madge’s surprise 20-minute set in the Big Apple just weeks ago went down a storm with the crowds, who watched her sing Get Together live for the first time in two decades.
And fans don’t have long to wait until they can hear Confessions II, her latest album with producer Stuart Price.
Madonna has signed a huge new deal with TikTok, with the app streaming tracks from the record live tomorrow night from her VIP album launch party.
The hour-long broadcast will also see Madonna being interviewed about the making of the record, as well as playing a handful of her favourite songs from Confessions II.
It’s a big move for Madonna, after she revealed this week that she can’t stand social media, branding it “mesmerising and also soul-destroying”.
She told Vogue Italia: “Algorithms and artificial intelligence are the opposite of taking risks and to me that is the opposite of making art.”
Anything for us fans eh, Madge?

NICOLE SCHERZINGER is brimming with happiness in this sunhat as she celebrates her 48th birthday.
The Pussycat Dolls singer posed for a selfie at the beach on Monday.
Nicole is with her British fiancé Thom Evans in Hawaii, where she was born.
She said: “Last day at this age and she was feeling cute at sunset, back home at her fave beach.”
Nicole will begin rehearsals later this summer for the Pussycat Dolls reunion tour. UK arena shows start on September 29 in Birmingham.

BAD BUNNY has hopped back into his ex’s good books.
He has rekindled his romance with jewellery designer Gabriela Berlingeri, who was with him before fame arrived.
The Puerto Rican rapper played to more than 100,000 fans during two sell-out shows at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the weekend.
There in support was Gabriela, who has quietly been accompanying him on tour.
They met in 2017 and dated until 2022. She even appeared as a bride in the video to his 2022 single Titi Me Pregunto.
But he later got together with Kendall Jenner and they dated for 18 months.
Bad Bunny has had quite the glow-up in the past few years and he’s become one of the most-streamed acts in the world.
I’m sure Gabriela will now be the envy of millions.

LILY’S SITTING PRETTY

SULTRY Lily Allen actually has plenty to smile about despite her very public divorce from Stranger Things actor David Harbour.
The singer and actress wore satin lingerie and tiny black shorts when she brought her West End Girl tour to London’s O2 Arena at the weekend – and will return to the capital next week for a third gig at the venue.
Despite looking moody while sitting in a chair on stage, Lily found her smile again as she clutched a bouquet of flowers.
Lily has spent much of the year on the road and was back on stage in Dublin last night.
After a summer of festivals, she will fly to North America in September to play arenas there.
It’s clear Lily is chuffed with the show she has created, which sees her perform her West End Girl album in full.
She wrote on X: “Everyone on this tour is really working very hard to give people the best show we possibly can, and I’m extremely proud of it.”
SAM: I’M HOOKED ON FISH
Sam Smith says he is yearning to be a fishmongerCredit: Getty
SAM SMITH has revealed a yearning to be a fishmonger.
The Promises singer told the Dish from Waitrose podcast: “I’m still gutted I’m not a fishmonger. Honestly, I’m not just saying this.
“I was lucky as a kid. We used to go to Waitrose a lot – and the fish section, I just loved. I just like to handle fish. I don’t know, it felt very calming.”
Earlier this year I told that Sam had launched a TikTok account called Sam Served, which documents favourite meals.
And it’s all part of a ploy to get closer to the fish counter.
Sam said: “I was in San Francisco on tour and I was bored, so,I filmed myself eating and it’s just reignited the fishmonger in me.”
I’VE got a sneaky suspicion there may soon be a song featuring pop girls Zara Larsson and Jade Thirlwall.
The pair secretly had a studio session in Paris last week, after the Solidays Festival, where they were both set to perform, was cancelled due to bad weather. I have high hopes for whatever it is they come up with.

SEEING Will Ferrell playing golf in his underpants wasn’t on my wish list.
But Kim Kardashian signed the actor to model her Skims men’s undies – and it has certainly got us all talking.
Will appears in blue briefs for the new ad campaign, though he was in character as golfer Lonnie Hawkins from his new Netflixcomedy series, The Hawk, out July 16.
Kim said of Will: “His body says retired, his Skims say one more round. Built for men who still know they’ve got it.”
If you say so, Kim.
SHAGGY IS THE RIO DEAL

THEY say never meet your heroes, but Shaggy has spent a lifetime doing exactly that.
He has no shortage of famous fans and everyone from Nelson Mandela to Michael Jackson has sung his praises.
In a chat with showbiz reporter Freya Fraser at Rock In Rio Lisboa festival in Portugal, he said of meeting the former South African president: “We were at an award show in South Africa and we’re at the same table.
“He just kind of says, ‘You’re doing really great stuff’.
“We had a great conversation. I’ve met a lot of other people. Michael Jackson was also a super-big Shaggy fan.
“That’s documented on YouTube, everybody sees that. I have actually performed twice for Pope Francis. Queen Elizabeth, we performed for her Jubilee. I met all my heroes, to be honest with you.”
Shaggy is not modest when it comes to his achievements, and he is pretty flashy with his lifestyle too, even if he reckons he isn’t.
He said: “I’m a very practical person, so I’m not buying cars I don’t drive because I’m always on tour. I never drive anywhere, somebody’s always driving me around.
“I’m not buying homes I don’t live in. I have two homes. I’m not buying five of them, you know, I’ll rent them when I need them.”
But he is humble when it comes to his career, which has seen 16 Top 40 hits including four No1s.
He said: “I’m not a genius, God gave me those. If I wrote them, I’d be writing one every week.”

Central Cee @ Rock In Rio Lisboa
★★★★☆
Central Cee takes over the World Stage at Rock In Rio LisboaCredit: Supplied
CENTRAL CEE ticked Lisbon off his bucket list as he took over the World Stage at Rock In Rio Lisboa before headliner 21 Savage.
On what was the most rap-focused line-up in the festival’s 22-year history, the Londoner tore through a mammoth 21-track set, including Loading, Doja, and Band4Band.
Cench proved he is an international star as thousands of Portuguese fans rapped every word back to him.
The atmosphere could not have been more different from the night before, when Sir Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and Joss Stone had fans swaying along to their anthems.
Staying true to his nonchalant persona, Central Cee – real name Oakley Neil Caesar-Su – asked: “We’re not in a rush, are we?”
And as he worked the crowd and whizzed through high-profile collaborations such as Did It First with Ice Spice and Dave’s Sprinter, I was getting treated like an A-lister.
Rock In Rio Lisboa pulled out all the stops for its guests, with one of the biggest hospitality areas I have ever seen.
The UK may have provided a lot of the talent on this occasion, but we could learn a thing or two from Portugal’s festival scene.
If you have a head for heights, then you can “walk with the gods” on the Sentiero degli Dei. It’s cut into the vertiginous hillside high above the Amalfi coast, offering heavenly views all the way to Capri and beyond. Ten breathtaking kilometres later, you’ll rejoin the earthly hordes of Instagrammers in the undeniably beautiful but crowded Positano. A super-convenient combined bus and ferry ticket from Travelmar takes you from any of the coastal towns to the start of the walk, in the lovely hamlet of Bomerano, in Agerola, and from Positano back to your base. A stunning hike to Poland’s Eye of the Sea
Morskie Oko lake in the Tatra mountains. Photograph: Gosiek B/Getty Images
The Five Lakes hike in the Tatras is the most beautiful in Poland. Starting from the parking lot at Palenica Białczańska, you gain elevation as you head south along a tumbling stream. After two hours, you arrive at the first of five glittering lakes surrounded by an amphitheatre that forms the border with Slovakia. Stop at Dolinie Pięciu Stawów hut to enjoy a hearty żurek (sour rye soup) as you contemplate the lake-pocked landscape. Fortified, climb southeast until, cresting the ridge, Morskie Oko (“Eye of the Sea”), the most storied lake in Poland, comes into view, glittering far below and engulfed by sheer mountain walls, including Poland’s highest peak. At the lakeside hut, you’ll have earned a Żywiec lager. Now, whether to follow the gentle trail back to the car park or push on to Rysy, 1,100m above … Ryan
Cold dips and butterflies in Georgia
The Ushguli to Mestia route passes ancient settlements with stone towers. Photograph: Eval/Getty Images
The Svaneti region of Georgia is a hiker’s dream. The Ushguli to Mestia route on the Transcaucasian Trail passes through some of the most dramatic and beautiful mountain landscapes I’ve ever encountered. Ancient stone towers, glacial pools perfect for a cold dip, meadows thick with wildflowers and butterflies, and the occasional wild horse made it feel like a film set. The villages are genuinely welcoming, the food is hearty and the biodiversity stopped me in my tracks. No photograph comes close to capturing it. If you haven’t considered Georgia for hiking, move it to the top of your list immediately. Aoife
Saunas and reindeer in Swedish Lapland

Over seven days last summer we walked a section of the Kungsleden Trail from Abisko to Nikkaluokta in Swedish Lapland, in the Arctic Circle – and it was a magical experience. It was surprising even to us that we managed to find a holiday that suited a group of four teenagers and two adults. By the end, we all agreed that the lack of internet was a bonus not a bug. The walking was testing enough to be a challenge but also left enough time for card games and enjoying the saunas along the way. The huts we stayed in were great and allowed our packs to be kept light. A highlight was spotting reindeer on the last day. Paul
Wildflowers and strudel in Austria
A view of the Wildschönau valley from on high. Photograph: Image Professionals/Alamy
The beautiful Wildschönau valley in Austria offers amazing hiking options accessible for the whole family. We hiked between 10 and 15 miles every day exploring this amazing landscape. The meadows of wildflowers were breathtaking. The cable cars in Niederau and Auffac allow you to explore higher routes offering 360-degree panoramas with a little less effort. The signposting of routes was incredible and the free buses allowed us to travel throughout the area easily. The climb to the top of Joelspitze was our highlight, spotting beautiful gentian flowers on the way there, and finishing with an apple strudel as reward at the end. Barbara
A canyon walk in northern Spain
The Ruta del Cares gorge offers one of the best walks in the Picos de Europa. Photograph: Image Professionals/Alamy
The Ruta del Cares in Spain’s Picos de Europa is the most incredible hike my daughter and I have ever undertaken. The first 45 minutes from Poncebos take you steeply uphill into the canyon, past abandoned shacks and along spectacular, well-trodden tracks, which plateau out. As a vertigo sufferer myself, I found the track is always just wide enough. The canyon narrows and the path takes you through a series of tunnels before reaching the idyllic hamlet, Caín, and waterfalls where you can dip your feet. You can grab a drink and snacks before returning back to Poncebos. Joe

Hike through the beautiful Black Forest from Kniebis to Baiersbronn (about 7 miles). Take the bus from Freudenstadt to Kniebis, then follow trails via the stunning Ellbachseeblick viewpoint and Sankenbach waterfall before descending into Baiersbronn. After the hike, enjoy an outdoor swim at Baiersbronn’s lido or relax with a meal in town, before taking the train back to Freudenstadt. Public transport is included with the Konus card if staying in Freudenstadt (or other participating Black Forest locations). George
Family-friendly highs in Switzerland
The hike to Kleine Scheidegg gives great views of the Bernese Alps, including the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. Photograph: Eva Bocek/Alamy
Last year, my family and I took the cable car up Männlichen, in Switzerland and walked the Panoramaweg at its top. At 3 miles to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can take a train down, this is manageable for little legs and gives glorious views of the Eiger and the Bernese Oberland. Wild and unspoiled it is not, but it boasts the most incredible alpine playground, and if you stop in Wengen on your way up, there is a trail of marble runs that enchanted my children for hours. Watching dolphins in the Algarve, Portugal
A view from the coast path of Ponta da Piedade. Photograph: Image Broker/Alamy
My most memorable European hike was the coastal path from Ponta da Piedade to Praia da Luz in Portugal’s Algarve. While most visitors crowd the famous beaches, the 7-mile trail threads between honey-coloured cliffs, hidden coves and wildflowers, with Atlantic views almost every step of the way. My tip is to start at sunrise and pack a lightweight breakfast. The early light turns the limestone cliffs gold, the temperature is perfect for walking, and you’ll often have long stretches of path entirely to yourself. We stopped on a clifftop ledge to watch dolphins offshore – a simple moment that made the whole day unforgettable. Steven
Winning tip: cliffside views of Lake Garda, Italy
The Ponale is carved into the rock in Riva del Garda. Photograph: Isaac 74/Getty Images
The highlight of our recent holiday was the stunning 6-mile walk along the Ponale Path, stretching from Riva at the top of Lake Garda to the Ledro valley. This beautiful cliffside trail takes you through old tunnels carved into the rock and treats you to the most spectacular views of the lake below. Along the route, we encountered lush green fields, picturesque little farmhouses nestled among vineyards and even a cascading waterfall. To top it all off, we enjoyed a refreshing pint and lasagne in the sunny beer garden at Bar sul Ponale before beginning the walk back. Bev

The California Science Center (CSC) in Los Angeles gave a sneak peek today of its long-awaited, much anticipated attraction — the towering Space Shuttle Endeavour in its ‘full stack’ configuration. The spacecraft was the last of five orbiters ever built and the most advanced. After a long wait, the public will soon be able to view it in all its glory inside its purpose-built permanent display building.
Endeavour is the centerpiece of The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center. It is a 200,000-square-foot expansion of the museum and will be “the only place in the world to see a complete, authentic space shuttle system, displayed in a 20-story launch position,” CSC said in a media release on Wednesday.
The exhibit is set to open on Nov. 13, 2026.
California Science Center California Science Center California Science Center Mike Kelley Mike Kelley
Endeavor was born out of the tragic loss of Challenger on January 28, 1986. NASA had to figure out how to replace the doomed orbiter. It looked at several options.
Feb. 1, 2003: Space shuttle Columbia disaster
The first shuttle, Enterprise, was built as a developmental test vehicle and made its first independent flight from the back of the converted 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) on Aug. 12, 1977. Enterprise was also used for fit checks on the launch pad and many other engineering and testing activities, but it was not built to fly into space. Although it was available for modification and could feasibly be altered for full duty, NASA decided converting it for orbital work was not the best move. Instead, the all new orbiter that would be named Endeavor was authorized for construction in 1987.
Endeavour lifted off on its maiden voyage on May 7, 1992, and flew 25 times, with its final flight coming in May 2011. As the last of its breed, it incorporated new features and upgrades, including being the first shuttle to carry a Station-Shuttle Power Transfer System (SSPTS), according to Space.com. Endeavour also had “the first fully activated Advanced Health Management System to watch over the shuttle’s three main engines during launch, as well as a three-string global positioning system (GPS) for pinpoint navigation during landings,” the publication added. In addition, the last of the orbiters was built with the most advanced avionics, with glass displays, when it entered service.
Space Shuttle Enterprise – Free flight Test – ABC News – 8/12/1977
During its time in space, Endeavour performed a variety of tasks, including helping to construct and sustain the International Space Station. Throughout its career, it spent 299 days in space, orbiting the Earth nearly 4,700 times and logging close to 123 million miles, according to NASA.
“Among Endeavour’s missions was the first to include four spacewalks, and then the first to include five,” the space agency added. “Its STS-67 mission set a length record almost two full days longer than any shuttle mission before it. Its airlock is the only one to have seen three spacewalkers exit through it for a single spacewalk. And in its cargo bay, the first two pieces of the International Space Station were joined together.”
The Space Shuttle Endeavour, docked to the Pressurized Mating Adapter (PMA-2) on the International Space Station, is featured in this photograph taken by a crewmember during the mission’s first planned session of extravehicular activity (EVA) August 15, 2007 in Space. (Photo by NASA via Getty Images) NASA
During an 11-day mission in 2000, the astronauts “used the radar instruments in Endeavour’s payload bay to obtain elevation data on a near global scale,” NASA noted about the mission with a military connection. “The data produced the most complete, high-resolution digital elevation model of the Earth. The SRTM comprised a cooperative effort among NASA with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, managing the project, the Department of Defense’s National Imagery and Mapping Agency [now the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency], the German space agency, and the Italian space agency. Prior to SRTM, scientists had a more detailed topographic map of Venus than of the Earth, thanks to the Magellan radar mapping mission.”
Endeavour, like the rest of the orbiters, always captured the public’s imagination. In December 2008 the spacecraft made its voyage back to Kennedy Space Center in Florida after landing at Edwards AFB. A photo of that trip, taken from an F/A-18B Hornet flying overhead, was once described by TWZ as “Arguably The Most Spectacular Photo Of NASA’s Shuttle Carrier Aircraft Ever.” You can read more about that picture and the flight in our story from the time here.
While plans had been in the works for a while to house Endeavour in a purpose-built exhibit, a major issue developed.
“An earthquake-resistant building large enough to house a 184-foot-tall Shuttle stack had a staggering cost estimate of $400 million,” AmericaSpace.com explained. “The California Science Center was unable to raise enough money to build the facility prior to Endeavour’s arrival. The museum still needed to protect the orbiter from the elements, so it built a metal hangar to temporarily house the spacecraft. The more aspirational exhibit would be conducted at a later date.”
That later date will be in November, as we noted earlier.

IF you’ve spent the last few months telling yourself you’ll book your summer holiday “next week,” don’t panic. You’re in good company.
This year, British holidaymakers are leaving it later than ever to lock in their summer breaks.
Holiday expert Rob Brooks has found a selection of summer hols that are all under £400ppCredit: Rob BrooksRob Brooks found holiday deals to the Algarve from £388pp in AugustCredit: Getty
Normally, playing chicken with the calendar is terrible news for your bank balance. But right now, I’m seeing something interesting.
Because summer is staring us down, hotels with empty beds and airlines with empty seats are gently slashing prices to get bookings over the line.
And the result is some genuinely surprising short-haul beach bargains are sitting on the board for under £400pp.
I’ve crunched the numbers and picked out ten spots where your late-booking budget will stretch way further than you think.
Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, Spain
Bag a stay at the THB Flora hotel in Lanzarote from £370pp this AugustCredit: Google maps
If you want a completely foolproof option, Lanzarote rarely misses.
Puerto del Carmen is an absolute staple, and right now, it’s delivering significantly better value than a lot of mainland Spanish resorts.
You get the reliable Canary sun, decent beaches, and enough life going on that you won’t get bored.
What makes this hotel a solid pick for me is the location – it’s close enough to the main strip when you want a drink, but tucked far enough away that you aren’t fighting a crowd just to claim a sunbed in the morning.
Icmeler, Turkey
The Petunya Konak Boutique Hotel in Icmeler, Turkey is a quieter option away from busy resortsCredit: Google maps
Icmeler has always been the smarter, slightly more sophisticated neighbour to Marmaris.
The bay is stunning, the beach is framed by pine hills, and it completely avoids the chaotic mega-resort energy you find elsewhere in Turkey.
And this year, it’s consistently overdelivering for the price.
This hotel feels way more boutique than your standard package hotel too.
The pool setup is hidden away in the gardens, giving you a level of quiet that is gold dust during peak August.
Cavtat, Croatia
Stay at the Epidaurus Hotel in Cavtat for a pool with some seriously stunning mountain viewsCredit: Google maps
Dubrovnik may be grabbing all the headlines these days, but Cavtat remains one of Croatia‘s smartest-value coastal towns.
It serves up the exact same crystal-clear Adriatic water and postcard waterfront dining, just minus the suffocating levels of tourism.
If you’ve never done Croatia, a five-night stay at the Epidaurus Hotel from £385pp this August is a brilliant place to start.
The real win here is the logistics: you’re perfectly placed to enjoy Cavtat’s laid-back vibe, but you can hop on a quick boat ride into Dubrovnik whenever you fancy a bit of sightseeing.
Lagos, Algarve, Portugal
Book an apartment stay in Lagos in the Algarve from £388pp this AugustCredit: Google maps
Lagos might just be my favourite corner of the Algarve.
It manages to balance unreal, cliff-backed beaches and a character-packed old town without feeling like a plastic tourist trap.
Finding peak summer deals here under the 400-quid mark is a massive result.
And the selling point at this hotel, for me, is space. Because you get an apartment setup to actually spread out in, while still being an easy stroll from both the sand and Lagos’ top-notch independent restaurant scene.
Qawra, Malta
Stay at the Best Western Premier Malta in Qawra for views from the rooftop poolCredit: Google maps
Malta doesn’t always get the attention it deserves for a summer beach break, which on this occasion plays into the hands of us holiday deal finders.
Because it offers guaranteed scorching weather, great swimming spots, and some of the warmest evening temperatures in Europe.
If you’re bored of the usual Spain or Turkey rotation, it’s a top shout.
And frankly, this place looks and feels much more expensive than the price tag suggests.
The rooftop pool alone looks like it belongs to a luxury city-break hotel rather than a budget summer deal.
Puerto Pollensa, Majorca, Spain
The Club del Sol Aparthotel in Majorca is in an affluent area – but you can stay for cheapCredit: Google maps
If you want Majorca but want to skip the neon lights and rowdy strips, Puerto Pollensa on the north coast is tough to beat.
It’s got a beautiful, relaxed bay and a classic, old-school Mediterranean feel.
I’ll be honest – this is normally a premium area, but 2026 keeps throwing curveballs that I love catching.
Because I found a five-night stay at the Club del Sol Aparthotel from £393pp this August, giving you a foothold in one of the prettiest, most civilized parts of the island while keeping your budget completely under control.
Playa del Ingles, Gran Canaria, Spain
Servatur Waikiki in Playa del Ingles is close to the bars and nightlife of the famous stripCredit: Google maps
Gran Canaria is a reliable destination for Brits for a reason.
If you’re scrambling for a last-minute getaway, Playa del Ingles is an easy win thanks to its massive beach and lively town center – this place is built for convenience.
It’s right on the money in terms of location too, as you’re close to the beach, close to the nightlife, and it serves as a great, no-nonsense base for a classic sun-and-beer holiday.
Elounda, Crete, Greece
The Alikes Hotel Apartments are in Elounda, Crete, overlooking the harbourCredit: Google maps
Elounda is proof that you don’t need a luxury budget to stay in one of Crete’s most scenic spots.
It’s known for its clear waters and charming little harbour, and is exactly the kind of place that usually charges a premium just for the view.
And this hotel puts you right in the heart of the village, so you can easily wander between the tavernas and waterfront bars without needing to budget for taxis.
Sunny Beach, Bulgaria
Sunny Beach in Bulgaria is an affordable resort but Rob says the hotels can feel high-endCredit: Alamy
Bulgaria has been sneakily dominating the budget travel market for years, and while Sunny Beach is famous for being cheap, the actual standard of the hotels has shot up recently.
Which now puts the destination in a perfect spot – overdelivering on quality compared to what you pay.

Vlore, Albania

If there’s one destination you need to look at before everyone else ruins it (sorry), it’s Albania.
The Albanian Riviera has been gaining serious traction in the last couple of years, and Vlore sits right in the perfect spot.
The beaches are stellar, the water rivals Greece, but the prices haven’t caught up with the quality yet.
But in my experience, that window won’t stay open forever.

But The Sun can reveal security downed two drones by jamming their signals after they flew over the party, causing a huge security scare for the A-Lister guests.
We can also reveal she wore two dresses over the course of the night, both believed to have been designed by Donatella Versace.
Both dresses were white and floor length, and described by onlookers as “glittering”.

Guests wept earlier in a hugely emotional moment as Sir Elton John serenaded Dua by playing piano and singing Your Song.
But a source told The Sun there were concerns for the Rocket Man legend, who was visibly struggling with his eyesight and appeared frail as he had to be supported by two men holding him.
A source told The Sun: “He had a person on each arm to guide him because he couldn’t see but he played the piano so well.”
They were then treated to a wedding feast which included a catalan lobster salad, tuna, and pasta with lobster.

Guests also had cannoli – Sicilian sweet pastry treats.
Sir Elton John left after the dinner, around the same time as Versace left too.
An Albanian community group based in Palermo also danced at the reception for Dua as bands played live music to guests whose cheers could be heard from the neighbouring streets.
Kosovo-Albanian singer Besnik Qaka and his band performed inside the venue in the evening.
A spectacular ten-minute firework display wowed guests at 11.30pm, before they moved inside the Villa Valguarnera for the afterparty. DJs played music including discotech.
A huge security presence threw a ring of steel around the event, and staff all signed NDAs and had to hand their phones in at 11am and did not get it back again until they left in the early hours.
Dua and Callum Said I Do in the Garden before the reception began.
Guests sat on wicker chairs adorned with white ribbon and gifted hand-embroidered white handkerchiefs with ‘Stay Mad with Me Forever’ on them in red.
They also got a white cotton bag with a red ‘D and C’ on the chair, which was filled with biodegradable confetti.
Elton, 79, who flew in by private jet for the ceremony, and Dua are close friends after they collaborated on the track Cold Heart in 2021.
Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace, 71, was also at the wedding, held in the grounds of the 18th-century Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria, and is believed to have designed Dua’s dress.
Yesterday’s service followed an official one at Old Marylebone Town Hall in central London last week.
A-list guests in Sicily included Brit actor Joe Alwyn, American actress Grace Gummer and her husband DJ Mark Ronson, and pop star Charli XCX and her husband George Daniel, the drummer with The 1975.
Some guests were understood to have signed non-disclosure agreements to protect the privacy of the star-studded three-day celebrations, which kicked off on Friday.
A ring of steel surrounded the venue with metal barriers erected along the roads leading to it.
The villa, which featured in the opening credits of HBO drama The White Lotus 2, is widely considered one of the most historically and culturally significant villas in Sicily.
One Kiss singer Dua, who has an estimated net worth of £150million, and Callum hired the venue for a reported £86,000.
It was once a Mafia hideout but has since been taken on by 76-year-old Italian author and translator Vittoria Alliata di Villafranca, the Princess of Valguarnera, who still lives in the estate.
A huge floral installation of white peonies, hyacinth and lily of the valley from a local florist served as the backdrop for the couple’s vows in the striking courtyard.
Meanwhile the grand entrance to the villa was adorned with purple bougainvillea flowers — a defining feature of Sicily.
Dua is understood to have walked down the aisle with her dad and manager Dukagjin through the courtyard. Pale wooden chairs draped with a cream ribbon were arranged for 200 guests in a semicircle for the ceremony.
Wedding favours included white hankerchiefs embroidered in red with “Stay mad with me forever” and there was also a photo booth.
Guests arrived in chauffer-driven cars and were served wine and popcorn while waiting for the ceremony to commence.
The ceremony was followed by a traditional Sicilian menu from chef Tony Lo Coco’s Michelin-starred Bagheria restaurant I Pupi.
Guests then partied into the night with an outdoor DJ set.
Dua and Callum — who is among the favourites to be the nextJames Bond — are staying in a £6,000-anight suite at the five-star 19th Century Palazzo Villa Igiea in nearby Palermo.
They are reported to have reserved two floors of the hotel and are staying in the Donna Franca Suite with the private terrace offering panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
They also shut down two city centre squares in Palermo for the first of three days of parties.
But she was criticised by locals who stuck up posters accusing the singer of making their public space a “living room for the rich”. Others said: “Palermo is not for rent.”
Sir Elton John left Palermo in a private jet just after 12.30pm local time today.
The music legend, 79, was accompanied by husband David Furnish, 63, who took a photo of the singer with ground staff.
The £24,000 private jet headed towards Farnborough, near his home in Windsor. Elton was a blue tracksuit while David wore a yellow suit.

A striking UK destination used as a movie set, with 27,000 acres of ancient woodland and a meandering river passing through, has been named one of the ‘best places in the world’
This beautiful part of the UK has been dubbed one of the ‘best places in the world’(Image: Getty Images)
Some of the world’s most spectacular places are right on our doorstep, and there’s one in the heart of an enchanting UK woodland.
Nestled between the Rivers Wye and Severn in Gloucestershire, straddling the Welsh border, lies the ancient Forest of Dean, with 27,000 acres of towering, majestic trees. It’s one of England’s largest ancient woodlands and stands as a celebrated haven of outstanding natural beauty.
It attracts visitors from far and wide to admire and explore its otherworldly woodland, rustic bridges, snowdrops, and spiralling rivers. But there’s one particular spot in the Forest of Dean that has been deemed the ‘best place in the world’.
Speaking to the Mirror, forest ranger for Forest Holidays, Gerry O’Brien, said: “I love the Forest of Dean, it’s obviously an area very close to my heart, it’s rich in history, heritage and wildlife. I know it really well, inside out, I guess, now. There are a lot of hidden gems around the forest that I love to go and explore, but Symonds Yat Rock is one of my favourite places in the world. It’s an incredible place to go, and I love it.”
Symonds Yat Rock offers breathtaking views across the winding River Wye, which is towered over by limestone cliffs and sprawling acres of ancient woodland. It’s a haven for birdwatching, with goshawks, buzzards, and sparrowhawks sweeping over the viewpoint, and it has ample walking trails to soak up the picturesque vistas and explore the nearby forest.
Gerry further shared about Symonds Yat Rock: “It’s incredible, it’s an old Iron Age Hill Fort, it’s almost right on the Hertfordshire border, looking out over the countryside. You could imagine, like 2,500 years ago, people were living on that rock, which is hard to believe.
“There are peregrine falcons that nest in the cliff face along the edge, so you can often see them coming up. There’s also a woodland, and if you’re looking down from Symonds Yat Rock, with the River Wye below you, you can look out over Copper Hill and on the other side, it’s the woodland where Harry Potter was filmed.”
Sharing a closer insight into the area and its renowned connections, Gerry added: “If you go to Symonds Yat East, it’s a little hamlet by the river, it’s beautiful and really picturesque. But you walk right past the house that was used in the Netflix series, Sex Education.
“It’s the red house, so all of that was filmed in and along the Wye Valley. There are a lot of hidden gems around the Forest of Dean. They’ve done alot of movies and TV work around the forest.”
Another highlight in the Forest of Dean’s otherworldly scenes is the beautiful Puzzlewood with 14 acres of twisted, moss-draped trees, ancient wooden bridges and snowdrops scattered across the rugged terrain. Alongside Gerry’s favourite place in the world, Puzzlewood is frequently hailed as one of the region’s most picturesque locations.
It even secured a place on Big 7 Travel’s ’50 Most Beautiful Places in the UK’ list for 2025 and again this year. This fantastical atmosphere has also attracted Hollywood attention, serving as a backdrop for productions such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Secret Garden, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Doctor Who, Merlin, Netflix’s Our Planet and BBC’s Atlantis.
Elsewhere in the Forest of Dean, Gerry recommended King Arthur’s Cave and the nearby Little Doward Hill Fort, an Iron Age fort situated in the Wye Valley. But one lesser-known landmark he applauded is the Darkhill Ironworks.
“It’s an old industrial ruin, and it’s really atmospheric where nature has reclaimed around it”, Gerry shared. “You can do a little walk around the Ironworks, which is a nice nature walk, and you can see the ruins.”
To explore some of Gerry’s recommendations in the Forest of Dean, you can book a stay with Forest Holidays, which offers a collection of lodges, cabins and treehouses, some with outdoor hot tubs to soak under the towering trees. Meanwhile, the likes of Sykes Holiday Cottages and Holidaycottages.co.uk also offer a range of stays in the region.

The beautiful town will see a total transformation with the multi-million pound regeneration project — and work is expected to kick off in full force at the end of May.
The northern town will undergo a massive transformation(Image: Shutterstock / Clare Louise Jackson)
A northern town that’s home to a famous 950-year-old historic abbey is all set for a massive £32million regeneration this May.
The North Yorkshire town already has a ton going for it — a majestic abbey, artisanal shops, cute cafes, countless craft beer joints, and picturesque green trails along the River Ouse. Now, it’s set to see a total transformation with the multi-million pound regeneration project.
Selby in North Yorkshire will be undergoing massive change by the end of May, with the long-awaited Selby Station Gateway project finally kicking off in the latter half of the month according to latest updates.
Spearheaded by North Yorkshire Council with support from Department for Transport, York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, Network Rail, Active Travel England, and Trans-Pennine Express, the £32million regeneration project is a joint effort aimed at boosting investment and encouraging sustainable travel in the town.
The project is being funded by the larger government-back Transforming Cities Fund, which was set up in a bid to encourage people to walk or cycle seamlessly between railway stations and town centres.
The multi-million pound regeneration will see the national civil engineering and highways contractor, Galliford Try Ltd, commence demolition work at the end of this month to make space for a brand-new car park and improved walking and cycling routes.
Demolition work of unused buildings around the site will start with James William House on Cowie Drive, followed by the former Railway Social Club and Selby Business Centre.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for highways and transport, local councillor Malcolm Taylor, said of the project: “It represents a major investment to enhance the area and improve routes leading to the railway station, and we are confident that the project will act as a catalyst for further investment for Selby.”
Taylor added: “I’m pleased to announce that after many months of development, and through close working with partners and the community, we are ready to begin the scheme. We will keep the public updated when details of further phases come forward.”
The station will also become equipped with new accessible platform access, a completely remodelled bus station and a brand-new plaza which will connect it to the neighbouring Selby Park.
Over the next year, the first phase of the regeneration scheme is expected to deliver:
New accessible platform access to the rear of the station building
A brand-new station car park.
A completely remodelled bus station.
Major improvements to local walkways and cycleways.
This phase, which comprises the removal of existing unused buildings, is expected to take roughly 12 months to complete. While the initial timelines had completion set for autumn 2028, the unexpected delays have made it difficult to pinpoint exactly when work is expected to finish.
The first public consultation on the regeneration project’s plans was held back in 2019, with work touted to commence in October last year, however those plans were delayed and postponed due to bats living on parts of the site. Plans were then put in place for the project to kick off in March 2026, however it was met with delays once again.
With this £32million regeneration project, the town of Selby hopes to boost its appeal to both visitors as well as residents.

The pods only became available to book from May 1 with prices starting from around £130 a night.
The demand has already gone through the roof with the first four weeks sold out on Airbnb.
Guests will have plenty to do nearby too as the 250-acre waterpark offers inflatable aqua parks, kayaking, paddleboarding and open-water swimming.
James Whitehead, Operations Manager at North Yorkshire Water Park, said: “Both helicopters have an extraordinary history, having spent decades carrying out life-saving search and rescue missions across the UK.
“It was important to us that the original character and charm is preserved as much as possible while making them a cosy place to relax after a day of fun.”

Incredible zoo where ‘all animals look so happy’ named UK’s best(Image: Chester Zoo)
Chester Zoo, located in Cheshire, has been crowned the UK’s best-rated zoo on Tripadvisor. The park, which is home to 30,000 animals and 500 species, topped the national rankings based on visitor reviews, boasting an impressive 11,666 excellent ratings.
Chester Zoo also featured amongst Europe’s top 10 zoos and aquariums for 2026. The park recently underwent an expansion with the opening of Heart of Africa, the largest zoo habitat ever created in the UK, housing 57 iconic African species. Last year, the zoo launched The Reserve, a premium safari experience giving guests the opportunity to spend the night in one of 51 luxury African-themed lodges.
One of the most recent reviews on Tripadvisor says: “Absolutely incredible zoo! Best I’ve ever been to! All the animals look so happy and everything is so clean and well looked after. We stayed in one of the lakeside lodges and went to the zoo over two days as it is massive because all of the enclosures are very spacious. All the staff were happy, helpful, and polite; the food was good. The whole place just had a very positive vibe. Would 1,000% recommend.”
Another visitor told the Express: “It’s a very nice zoo, great for a day trip. We saw a baby rhino when we went, which was awesome. We’ll be back!”
Jamie Christon, CEO of Chester Zoo, said: “We’re over the moon to be named the UK’s top zoo by Tripadvisor. This recognition is built entirely on genuine reviews from our visitors – and that means the world to us. I’m very proud of everyone who makes our national conservation zoo such a special place.
“Every visit to Chester Zoo directly supports our vital conservation work, both here at home and around the world, and the past year alone is a reminder of just how much that work matters. We’ve developed the world’s first vaccine for a deadly virus that threatens Asian elephants globally, we’ve officially pulled a tiny species of snail back from the brink of extinction, and right here on our doorstep we’ve been planting thousands of new trees to create important new woodland habitat. None of that happens without the people who come through our gates – and we’re enormously grateful to every one of them.”

Meanwhile, the star, who has been married five times, had her famous brunette locks styled in a blown out bob.
Dame Joan’s husband Percy Gibson, 60, was also spotted at the M&S event looking very smitten with the TV legend.
Percy, who is 32-years Dame Joan’s junior, smiled alongside his wife as he made an appearance in support of her.
The pair met in 2002 after meeting on the set of a play that he produced and she starred in.
Speaking at the launch of M&S’ 10 new rosés, Dame Joan said: “Rosé season has arrived, though I’ve never been one to need permission to pour a glass.
“Who needs the South of France when you can simply glide into your local M&S Foodhall and find the finest rosé right there? You don’t need a Riviera postcode, just impeccable taste… preferably chilled.”
The Golden Globe winner also shared her top tips for the perfect glass of rosé.
Dame Joan confessed the wine tastes better chilled, with a “lovely” view and should be drank whatever the weather because it’s “sunshine in a glass.”
Casting her eye over it on the table, Sonnaz remarked: “I’m no builder, but needless to say, this looks like it’s seen much better days.” Concurring, Steve responded: “Yeah, I’ve done up old buildings, and I don’t think any of them were as bad as this.”
Stepping into the barn was Dawn Shrives from West Sussex, who jokingly told the experts they were looking at “ruins” before revealing it was an extraordinary model watermill constructed by her late father in 1996.
She explained: “He put it all together to go in front of our family home to replicate the red brickwork of the house. Every little brick he made by hand, individually, he wanted it to be a working watermill. Obviously, the years of it sitting on the ground, outside, the weather had gotten to it.”
Dawn went on to describe how her father had planned to install an underground chamber to make the watermill turn. Tragically, he passed away in 2014, and her mother subsequently moved to a smaller property, reports the Manchester Evening News.
She noted that with her mother now living in a bungalow, there is nothing left to remind her of her beloved late husband, underlining just how precious the watermill model truly is. Dawn continued: “He’s touched, every single piece of this. He’s crafted this, and she looks out her front window and sees this deteriorating; it’s just so sad to see.”
She went on: “So to have it brought back to life for the family, for mum, would just be amazing. Just to see it put back together and whole again, I think, is almost- we can’t even think of that.” As Steve outlined his intentions to repair the model, it was evident he faced a considerable challenge.
Ultimately, after crafting bricks to substitute those Dawn’s father had originally made, Steve succeeded in restoring the dilapidated model and incorporated water to make the wheel rotate as her father had envisioned decades earlier.
When the moment arrived to reveal the completed restoration, Dawn brought her mother, Pam, along to view the model. The two women were immediately moved to tears upon seeing it unveiled, astounded by Steve’s achievement.
Pam promptly thanked Steve as Dawn exclaimed: “Look at that! Isn’t that lovely?” Pam remarked: “Gosh, that’s amazing. You’ve done all of these (roof tiles). Gosh, thank you.”
Upon noticing the water feature surrounding the house, Steve activated it for the first time, demonstrating the functioning watermill. She observed: “It’s just beyond anything that we could’ve thought would ever happen to it, thank you.”
Addressing the camera directly, Dawn said: “The watermill just sums up a legacy that will now stay in the family, be preserved, and dad would be so pleased to know that it’s working and it’s loved and it’s still loved.” Pam agreed, adding: “It’s just the best thing we could have done, isn’t it?”
