THE UK must be home to hundreds, if not thousands, of Christmas markets – but having explored many across the UK, the South West is home to the best.

Devon comes alive in the winter months – the moors become snowy, small villages have pubs with glowing fires and towns become decked out with huge light installations.

Having lived in London for five years now, I have been to a fair few in the capital and even further afield, such as Newcastle.

But each time I visit a new Christmas market I am reminded of the ones in Devon – and honestly none compare.

Totnes Christmas Market

Totnes is the Devon Christmas Market that takes the top spot in my heart – nothing really compares to it.

Set all along the medieval town’s high street, it really does feel like stepping into the middle ages.

And what makes it even more fun, is it takes place solely in the late afternoon to evening.

This year the market will take place on December 2, 9 and 16 from 3pm to 9pm.

Despite Totnes only being a small town, the market features over 70 stalls.

And thanks to being located on the high street (the road is closed for the event), all the shops stay open late as well with lots of festive activities inside too.

I often think Totnes is the best town in the UK for independent shops, so it is usually the Christmas market where I find the most gifts (including some for myself).

The market then also has two food court areas, one in the Civic Hall carpark and one at The Mansion.

If you head there on the final date, you will get to see the beautiful Totnes Carnival Lantern Parade as well.

Starting at 4:30pm, the parade works its way through the town.

Carols are performed in St Mary’s Church as well, and Totnes Elizabethan Museum will be open too.

Listen to your favourite carols with performances from local schools and community choirs outside St Mary’s Church.

Exeter Christmas Market

Based around the city’s historic cathedral, Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market will take place from November 20 to December 19.

This market really feels magical because as you peruse around, you’ll be in the shadow of the breathtaking cathedral.

It is Devon’s biggest Christmas market with over a hundred festive chalets, but isn’t so large that it makes it overwhelming – so it’s perfect to get comfortably into the Christmas spirit.

There are a number of stalls selling seasonal gifts and food, as well as mulled wine.

The market is full of local traders which makes it really special, including South Devon Chilli Farm – well-known for its chilli chocolate.

Devon is also a top spot for cider producers, and at this year’s market there will be Ventons Devon Cyder, made with vintage cyder apples.

Christmas Shopping Fayre

If you are panicking about what to get people or have a lot of people to buy for, then head to the Christmas Shopping Fayre at Westpoint in Exeter.

Across December 5, 6 and 7, visitors can head to this giant Christmas market – which is inside!

There are lots of stalls selling a range of items, and there is even a free Santa’s grotto.

It costs £5 per adult to enter and children under 16-years-old are free.

Michaelmas Fair

‍The Michaelmas Fair is another one located in an amazing setting – but this time it is at a castle.

Found at Powderham Castle in Exeter, The Michaelmas Fair will take place on November 6, between 10am and 3pm.

There are a number of stalls selling crafted items and gifts you can’t find on the high street and of course, food and drink is available as well.

The setting is also a big draw to this market as it is located in the courtyard of the castle.

Unusually, if you have an antique or collectible, bring it along and you can have it valued for free.

It costs £3.50 per person, if you book in advance, or £5 per person on the door.

Newton Abbot Christmas Fayre

Located at Newton Abbot Racecourse on November 29, you will find the Christmas Fayre.

The event will take place between 10am and 4pm and there will be a number of family activities to enjoy.

The best thing about Newton Abbot Racecourse is that it is super accessible via public transport, thanks to being close to Newton Abbot town centre.

In addition to 70 local stallholders with handmade jewellery and decorations, there will also be a Christmas Village with 60 stables featuring craftsmen.

There’s a cafe as well, with mulled wine, hot drinks and lunch options available.

This event though, is definitely a top spot for kids as there is a face painter, Dartmoor ponies and even a snow globe that you can step inside.

Families can also take part in a pottery painting workshop or adults can opt to make a wreath.

Tickets cost £3 per adult and children are free.

Christmas Artisan Market and ‘Dino-roars’ Christmas storytelling

Last but not least is a Christmas market in a hidden spot.

The small village of Cockington is just set back from the Torbay seafront, but feels like a completely different world from the surrounding area.

Think thatched cottages and little streams.

Taking place on December 14 between 10:30am and 4pm, Cockington Court will host an artisan market with handmade products from local businesses and artists, such as glassblowers, jewellers and florists.

Entry is free.

The Seven Dials cafe will be open for hot drinks, lunch options, cream teas and sweet treats.

For kids, there will also be ‘Dino-roars’ Christmas storytelling, where families can listen to Christmas tales including ‘The Christmasaurus and the night before Christmas’ by Tom Fletcher and ‘The Dinosaur Who Pooped a Reindeer’ by Tom Fletcher and Dougie.

Kids can even meet some of the dino characters and make dinosaur Christmas trees.

The storytelling sessions cost £4.50 per person.

In other Christmas market news, one of the UK’s most popular holiday parks to get £2million winter wonderland.

Plus, the UK Christmas market that attracts nearly two million visitors is getting three new attractions.

CENTER Parcs has revealed a multi-million pound Christmas experience at one of their parks this year.

The site in Suffolk has invested £2million to transform its Winter Wonderland, and its opening next month.

Elveden Forest has upgraded certain areas of the park for Christmas, and has added its Woodland Workshop.

From November 7, families will get the chance to meet Santa and his elves who are hard at work before the big day.

You can also get a glimpse of Santa while enjoying brunch at Huck’s, or join the team for a festive dance along to Christmas tunes at Santa’s Greetings.

The wooden chalet will have a snow-capped roof and be wrapped in pine decorations next to a huge Christmas tree.

When the weather gets chilly, guests can warm up in the Tipi, enjoy a hot chocolate, mince pies, traditional sausage rolls, Bratwurst, and Christmas tree-shaped waffles.

Santa’s Woodland Village has been refreshed and visitors can enjoy the new seasonal displays.

It’s there where guests will find the new Snow Zone, a giant snow globe where families can step inside for a festive photo.

Other attractions include the Enchanted Light Garden which is essentially a festive light trail which is open from 4PM-9PM every day.

There are also activities like the Elf Pyjama Party, and festive craft workshops throughout the day.

Lots of activities are included in the price of a break over the festive period – and you can even pre-order decorations to dress up the lodge too.

You can book to stay in Center Parcs’ hotels or apartment, to treehouses, and the newly introduced premium lodges.

If you still want to book, Sun Travel found that a family of four can book a Woodland Lodge for four nights in Elveden Forest from November 17 to November 21 for £629 – which works out at £39.31pppn.

Of course there aren’t just festive activites, at Elveden Forest you can also check out the Subtropical Swimming Paradise which is head to 29.5C.

So you won’t have to worry about being cold while swimming in a number of pools, heading down flumes or the a ‘Tropical Cyclone’ slide and checking out the water rapids.

The site recently announced that it will refurbish Venture Cove in The Subtropical Swimming Paradise, with the site expecting to reopen the attraction on December 19.

The Aqua Sana Spa on-site also underwent refurbishment in 2023, with a new £6.5million Forest Spa opening with steam rooms, saunas, a heated outdoor pool, an ice cave and a number of relaxation rooms.

Other activities include golf, archery, dance classes, inflatable football, glow-in-the-dark badminton and table tennis, to winter workshops.

This new attraction opened at Elveden in summer 2025…

Center Parcs’ new Treetop Glider experience allows guests to glide above the forest canopy, passing views of its lake and the surrounding countryside.

Riders will have to take a leap of faith from a treehouse nestled in the woods, to then glide along a 180-metre track.

Along the route there will be twists and turns, as well as views of the Suffolk countryside and Elveden’s lake.

To go on the ride, guests must be between 1.1metres and 1.87metres tall and each rider will get two laps of the course, per booking.

The experience opened on September 2, 2025.

Set within the Breckland, an area of national importance, there are a number of other treetop adventures at Elveden Forest, including Aerial Adventure, where guests are secured to a harness and get to swing through the trees.

The aerial rope course gets gradually higher, before it finishes with a zip wire experience.

A seven-day cruise, taking in some of Europe’s most renowned Christmas market cities, is currently available for a mere £384.

Iglu Cruises has just cut the price of this week-long journey from Southampton aboard the MSC Poesia, setting sail on 28 November.

This no-fly cruise deal includes a wide array of amenities, including all meals onboard and a midnight buffet for those needing a late-night snack after a busy day hunting for festive bargains at the market stalls.

The ship, capable of accommodating around 3,000 passengers, boasts five restaurants, 16 bars and lounges, sports facilities such as tennis, basketball, and mini-golf, two swimming pools, a gym, sauna, whirlpools, and the award-winning MSC Aurea Spa.

Hamburg

Hamburg is renowned for its food markets, particularly the fish markets that have gained global recognition. However, Germany’s second-largest city also excels in hosting Christmas Markets.

The most famous and largest market in Hamburg is the main Weihnachtsmarkt, situated in front of the Town Hall, with a grand Christmas tree marking its location. Other unique markets are scattered throughout the city, including the ‘Santa Pauli’ festival on the Reeperbahn, which boasts being the world’s first erotic Christmas market.

Rotterdam

The Winter Fair takes place at the Ahoy Convention Centre, where you can purchase a variety of goods and culinary delights, including the Rotterdam staple ‘kapsalon’ – a dish consisting of thin chips topped with gyro meat and smothered in cheese.

Bruges

Undeniably one of Europe’s most picturesque cities, Bruges truly sparkles when its medieval architecture is illuminated against the dark winter night sky. The market is a riot of colour and sound, with stalls offering a carefully chosen selection of holiday goods, from handmade ornaments and decorations to gourmet chocolates and festive attire.

Traditional Belgian fare such as waffles and chips, along with plenty of beers, are sure to be highlights.

Le Havre

A lesser-known but delightful festive destination is Intra Muros, located at the foot of the Castle on Esplanade St Vincent. It boasts a variety of chalets offering food and drink, including scrumptious cheeses, crêpes, and mulled wine, as well as arts and crafts and an array of gifts. The town also features an ice rink and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Iglu currently has two other Christmas market-themed cruises available:

‘Christmas Markets from Tilbury’ is offered by Iglu Cruise for £572 per person (previously £619), for a 6-night, full-board trip departing on 14th December 2025. The cruise visits Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Zeebrugge (for Bruges) and is based on two people sharing an outside cabin on board Ambassador’s Ambience. Solo cabins are available for only £552 (previously £679).

‘Christmas Markets Hamburg, Rotterdam & Bruges from Southampton’ is offered by Iglu Cruise for £621 per person (previously £649), for a 7-night, full-board trip departing on 14th December 2025. The cruise visits Zeebrugge (for Bruges), Rotterdam, and Hamburg and is based on two people sharing an inside cabin on board Cunard’s Queen Anne.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative to the UK’s overpriced Christmas markets, look no further than the ‘lesser known’ markets in Europe which offer a cosy day out without breaking the bank

Many believe there’s no better way to embrace the festive spirit than with a hot cup of mulled wine while perusing a European Christmas market. However, these events can often be quite pricey.

For instance, a cup of mulled wine at the Berlin Christmas market could set you back five euros, and an additional three if you fancy keeping the mug as a keepsake.

Staying closer to home doesn’t necessarily mean saving money either. It’s well known that UK Christmas markets are among the priciest in Europe.

For example, a visit to the Manchester Christmas markets this year could see you shelling out around £25 for a beer and a bratwurst.

If you’re eager to plan a festive trip but don’t want to break the bank, some of the ‘less popular’ European Christmas markets offer much more affordable prices. Plus, they’re usually less crowded than their UK counterparts, reports the Daily Record.

In need of some ideas?

The team at Eurochange have done some digging into the best alternative Christmas markets across Europe, including the cheapest flights from the UK and average hotel costs. They’ve also investigated which cities offer the best exchange rates, so you know where your money will go furthest.

Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at Eurochange, said: “Our research shows the Christmas market in Wroclaw, Poland, is one of the best in Europe if you’re looking for excellent value for money and a truly authentic experience. Two nights of accommodation for two adults costs just £47, and food and drinks are very affordable. Sibiu in Romania is a close second when it comes to the cheapest Christmas markets in Europe. Here, you can get a mulled wine for just 86p.”

Sibiu, Romania

Laura describes Sibiu as Romania’s leading Christmas market destination, surpassing even Bucharest. The Transylvanian winter celebration, dubbed ‘The Fair In Sibiu’, attracts Romanians in crowds, running from November 14, 2025, through to January 4, 2026.

The town boasts a distinctive blend of Hungarian, Romanian and German influences, creating a cultural richness unmatched elsewhere in Transylvania, according to Laura. Set within the historic old town at Piața Mare, the markets are “beautifully decorated with thousands of fairy lights and festive trinkets”, she noted.

The affordability is particularly striking, she points out. Mulled wine typically ranges from five to 10 leu (merely £0.86).

Visitors should sample regional delicacies, including Kürtőskalács (spit cakes) and cozonac (sweet bread).

Wroclaw, Poland

According to Laura, Wroclaw is considered among Poland’s finest and most stunning Christmas markets. “It is an idyllic, real-life winter wonderland, scattered across the city,” she said.

Situated across Rynek Market Square, Place Solny, Świdnicka Street and Oławska Street, numerous stalls await visitors. Laura notes many vendors offer handcrafted items and delicacies, largely from independent traders.

Laura explains that prices remain highly accessible, with mulled wine available for merely 15 PLN (£3.08) plus a 15 PLN mug deposit. However, if you prefer not to keep the mug, surrounding restaurants and bars offer warming mulled wine for just 9 PLN (£1.85).

Innsbruck, Austria

Laura said: “Nothing will give you the ‘festive feels’ like roaming the streets of Innsbruck in the run-up to Christmas. The aroma of freshly made Kiachln (piping hot doughnuts laced with Sauerkraut) and the sound of Christmas carols are guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit.

“Fairy lights give the medieval alleys a magical glow, and in front of the city’s famous ‘Golden Roof’, you will find the Christmas markets. Visitors can also wander across to Innsbruck’s main shopping street, Maria-Theresien Straße, where there are even more chalets offering tasty snacks and handmade crafts.”

Tallinn, Estonia

“Tallinn Christmas market is a real-life fairytale in the heart of Estonia’s capital”, Laura says. Visitors can sample local delicacies, including black pudding, sour cabbage, gingerbread and warming festive tipples from 1-2 euros, making it amongst the cheapest and most authentic Christmas markets in Europe.

She said: “The real star of the show is the incredible market Christmas tree, which has been set up every year in the Town Hall Square since 1441, making it the first ever Christmas tree to be put on display in Europe.”

Zagreb, Croatia

Croatia might not be the first destination that springs to mind when thinking of a ‘festive’ location, but Laura claims Zagreb’s Christmas market shouldn’t be overlooked. Also known as ‘Advent Zagreb,’ the city “truly comes to life” during the festive season with an epic Christmas market, a rich programme of music and art exhibitions, and an impressive ice-skating rink in King Tromislav Square.

GOING away to visit a Christmas market is a fun way to celebrate the festivities, and it’s even better when you can do it on the cheap.

If you head to this ‘underrated’ city, you can get a cup of mulled wine for less than £1, and other sweet treats will be a bargain too.

The city of Sibiu is known for being Romania‘s most popular Christmas destination, and it has a popular annual Christmas fair.

Whilst Sibiu may not be high on the must-visit list for Brits, it’s becoming much more accessible thanks to Wizz Air flights – and you can be there in just over three hours.

The city was even named as the 18th most underrated destination by Time Out earlier this year.

From November 14, 2025 to January 4, 2026, Sibiu will hold its Târgul de Crăciun din Sibiu which is one of the biggest Christmas markets in the city.

It’s not just the Christmas treats that are cheap, according to Wise, the cost of a three course meal for two in Sibiu costs an average of 175lei (£30).

A pint of beer can cost as little as 11lei, which translates to just £1.91. And the price of an average Cappuccino is 12.20lei (£2.11).

For an overnight stay, options on Booking.com start from £26 based on two people sharing – so that works out at just £13pppn.

In December, you can fly from Birmingham to Sibiu with Wizz Air from £17.

Another airport with direct flights to the city is from London Luton with one-way flights from £27.

There’s plenty of sightseeing to do too as the city is known for its charming old town and there are lots of medieval walls and towers to spot.

Head over to The Bridge of Lies which has lots of legends and myths behind it – and when lit up at night, it makes for a great picture spot.

According to Tripadvisor, another must-see spot in Sibiu is Muzeul Astra, the largest open air museum in Europe.

The Grand Square, which is historic and filled with market stalls, cafes, restaurants and shops – this is where the Christmas fair will be set up.

One Wizz Air flight attendant reveals the one speciality to try in Sibiu…

When Sun Travel interviewed a Wizz Air flight attendant, she recommended a trip to Sibiu – one of her favourite places.

Flight attendant Niko said: “I’ve been to Sibiu in Romania several times already.

“You have the mountains, so there’s lots of nature, the food is amazing, everything is cheap and the people are so friendly.

“And you should try Papanasi. It’s a Romanian dessert that’s like a doughnut. It tastes amazing, but not good if you’re on a diet.”

Essentially, a Papanasi is a fried or boiled cheese doughnut usually served with sour cream and jam – and you can pick one up for around £4 in Romania.

While there are loads of incredible Christmas markets in the UK, visiting one in Europe is a whole other experience. Many European Christmas markets are bigger, and they often have unique features that make for a memorable festive outing.

One market that’s bound to appeal to Christmas-enthusiasts is in Arezzo, Italy, a historic city that’s surrounded by Tuscan hills and can be found just over an hour’s train ride from Rome.

While this train ride is already a picturesque journey, in the run up to Christmas the train company La Ferroviaria Italiana (LFI) will run their Espresso Assisi service with trains decked out in festive decorations. There will also be Christmas music playing, and a “small gift” for each passenger, getting you into the spirit of the season.

Once you arrive, you can browse a vast Christmas market in the heart of this charming medieval city. Arezzo’s Piazza Grande will host the Tyrolean Village market from November 15 to December 28, which is based on the traditional markets of the northern region of Tyrol, as well as having German and Austrian influences. Browse the small wooden huts and find hand-crafted items from handblown baubles to nativity figurines.

Visit between November 15 and January 6 and there’s also an additional Art Market, which will be full of artisanal crafts, as well as offering local speciality food stalls. The market opens until 9pm on some dates, which means you can see the streets lit-up after dark.

Arezzo will also have an ice rink, again with late opening hours, so you can enjoy the festive atmosphere at night. After sunset, visit La Luna di Natale (Christmas moon), a giant model of the moon that lights up. You can also take a stroll through Il Bosco delle Emozioni (the forest of emotions), a Christmas light trail surrounded by pine trees with free entry. Or hop on the Ferris wheel for amazing views of the city.

The Arezzo Christmas Bus Tour is also a good way to explore the city. This small electric bus takes you through the narrow streets and squares, with the tour taking 40-minutes and costing 12 euros (approx. £10.57).

If you’re planning to stay in the picturesque spot for a little longer, you can also visit Arezzo Cathedral, which sits on a hilltop and has spectacular frescoes and stained glass. There’s also the Basilica di San Francesco, which is home of the famous Legends of the True Cross frescoes, which date back to early Renaissance times.

Casa Vasari is also a great place to see Renaissance artworks, sculptures, and more. Set in a historic home that once belonged to artist Giorgio Vasari, this collection includes his own works from the 16th-century, as well as artists he collaborated with.

Ryanair offer flights to Rome from London Stansted from just £18 one way, with flight times of two hours 45 minutes. You can also fly with airlines including Jet2, whose Manchester to Rome flights clock in at three hours and start at £35 each way.

These UK staycations could be an excellent choice for family get-togethers and getting into the Christmas spirit, offering everything from Santa visits to festive food

Trying to cram all your festive activities into December can be a challenge. From the big Santa visit to seeing a panto and Christmas markets, not to mention spending family time together, it sometimes feels like the month just isn’t long enough.

If you’re looking for an alternative that’s a little more relaxed, many holiday parks are now offering breaks in the run up to the big day. While you may associate caravan and lodge holidays with summer, these parks are opening in November and December for festive-themed breaks.

What’s on offer varies from park to park, but generally includes extras from Christmas-themed shows to Santa’s grottos, and even a Christmas tree in your accommodation. These breaks could be a great way to escape the pre-Christmas chaos, or to spend time with extended family without needing to host at home.

So, which holiday parks will be opening their doors for festive fun, and what’s on offer?

Haven – ‘sleigh-cations’

Four nights from £115

Haven will open the doors at nine of its locations in the run-up to Christmas: Craig Tara, Seton Sands, Devon Cliffs, Kent Coast, Cala Gran, Hafan y Môr, Primrose Valley, Seashore, and Rockley Park.

Staying at Haven means you can choose between accommodation from caravans to lodges, each with its own Christmas tree. The parks will also be adorned with decorations and lights, and Haven says there will be festive entertainment during the day and in the evening. Bookable activities will include pottery making, festive make-a-bear, and much more. Of course, there’s Santa’s Grotto, which will be an additional cost.

Haven will also be staging a Jack and the Beanstalk panto and promising “plenty of opportunities for a festive boogie.” Their on-site restaurants will serve festive food, including a three-course menu for Christmas day, while some Haven parks have their own Wetherspoons, which will offer the chain’s Christmas menu.

Parkdean Resorts will offer what it describes as the “full Winter Wonderland experience” at six parks in December: Camber Sands in Sussex, Warmwell in Dorset, Trecco Bay and Ty Mawr in Wales, Cayton Bay in North Yorkshire, and Cherry Tree in Norfolk. They’re also opening two parks in the Lake District with a “more relaxed festive atmosphere,” White Cross Bay and Fallbarrow.

Parkdean has a busy entertainment program for younger kids, promising Festive Milkshake! Mornings and Rocking Around the Christmas Tree with the PAW Patrol puppies. Families can enjoy breakfast with Santa or a trip to his grotto, watch a family pantomime, or even explore a festive market. Visit Warmwell and you can also enjoy their dry ski slope for skiing and snowboarding.

If you opt for a midweek break starting on a Monday, Parkdean also offers an all-inclusive option. This includes three meals a day, plus soft drinks and hot drinks, so you won’t need to worry about feeding the kids during your stay. Unlike most of the holiday parks on this list, the cost of meeting Santa is included for all families taking a festive break. Kids can enjoy Father Christmas’ Express Delivery, an immersive experience where they write their Christmas letter and deliver it to the man in red himself.

Also included in the cost of Butlin’s Christmas breaks is festive entertainment, including a panto, Snow White and her Magnificent Friends. Other themed shows include the Skyline Snowstorm party and Christmas Goes Pop, and there will be Christmas movie screenings for the family to enjoy together. The pools will be open, with Butlin’s offering a Festive Pool Party on each break. Visitors also get unlimited fairground rides and can enjoy activities such as making their own Christmas decorations.

ONE of the UK’s most popular Christmas markets is getting some new additions for families this year.

Newcastle Christmas Market welcomed 1.7million tourists last year, and spreads across the city centre, including Old Eldon Square.

Throughout the streets, visitors can usually find a number of stalls with local traders selling food, drinks and gifts.

And for this year, the festive event will be getting three new attractions.

The first is Marshmallow Land – where visitors will be able to toast marshmallows over an open fire.

This area will also be where visitors can find the Rockin’ Reindeer stage with shows and Santa Stories inside a tipi, with Santa himself.

Other attractions at the market returning for 2025 include the North Pole Terrace, where visitors can book igloos that surround Monument.

Alternatively, you could head to Moosenwirt – an alpine Christmas pop-up bar.

Families can even visit Mrs Claus’ Bakery to participate in a workshop.

In the surrounding area, there are even more Christmas events to explore including an ice rink at the Life Sciences Centre, from £15.50 per person.

It’s that time of year when people are busy looking for somewhere with a magical Christmas market to visit, and if you’re searching for somewhere new this festive season, then you may want to listen up.

A content creator duo, who focus on travel and lifestyle, have revealed a location which has one of the ‘best Christmas markets in Italy‘ – and you’ve probably never even heard of it before. Trento’s Christmas market takes place in the city of Trento, in the region of Trentino in Northern Italy. The market, which was first established in 1993, features numerous wooden huts and stalls as well as two main squares: Piazza Fiera and Piazza Mostra in the historic centre.

Talking about the European market, couple Francesca & Tommaso, also known as @takemyhearteverywhere on TikTok, told their 153,000 followers: “You’ve probably never heard of Trento’s Christmas markets — but they’re among the most magical in Italy.

“This small Alpine city turns into a winter postcard every year, with traditional wooden stalls, twinkling lights and snowy mountains in the background.”

They revealed that Piazza Fiera is the main square where you can find the food, crafts, and festive lights. Meanwhile, Piazza Mostra is “more intimate” and focused on handmade gifts and decorations.

Those planning to visit the market can do so from November 21, with it running until January 6. Opening hours are 10am-8pm daily, while the food area is open until 9pm on a Friday and Saturday.

Sharing their tips, the couple named their “must-try” products as vin brulé, tortel di patate and canederli, strudel.

They also praised the market for being “one of the greenest: in Europe, with it being plastic-free and powered by renewables.

As well as the information, the couple shared a video montage of the market, as they held up cream-topped hot chocolates, showed off the adorable market stalls and tasty food on offer and gave a glimpse of Santa, the big wheel and the train at the market.

People were loving the travel tip, with the post racking up more than 19,000 likes.

One person exclaimed: “Oh wow,” after watching the clip, while another said it looked like it was ‘straight out of a Christmas movie”.

A third chimed in: “Wow, this looks like a Christmas wonderland.”

While a fourth agreed: “This looks so magical!”

How can you get there?

Those planning to visit Trento can fly into a nearby airport such as Verona Villafranca Airport (VRN), with the flight taking just two hours form London and costing as little as £40 for a return.

From Verona airport, visitors can take a train to Trento, which takes around 1 hour 20 minutes, with the market a 5/10 minute walk from the station.

Train and coach journeys are also available, however these take far longer and can range from 13-29 hours each way.

Santa Steam Express

The Santa Steam Express heads off from London Victoria Station and features an interactive storytelling theatre experience whilst on the journey.

Passengers will also get to meet Santa and his elves.

The experience runs on December 20 and December 22, with four departures each day.

The experience then lasts around 90 minutes, taking passengers through London’s suburbs.

All children get to meet Santa, who will deliver them a traditional gift and they will also receive a snack and drink.

Parents aren’t left out though, as they will be able to have tea or coffee and a mince pie.

There are a range of different classes on board the train that vary in price.

For example, Coach Class costs from £55 per person, Club Class from £75 per person and Private Compartments available from £600 each, for up to six guests.

Christmas North Yorkshire Pullman

On board the North Yorkshire Pullman, passengers get to journey through the North York Moors National Park.

Each guest will enjoy a three-course meal, with tea and coffee, as well as a mince pie.

Trips take place from November 25 to January 4, departing and returning to Grosmont Station.

Seats cost from £99 per person.

Christmas Afternoon Tea on the Great Western Saloon

For an afternoon treat, opt for the Great Western Saloon, which departs from Grosmont in North Yorkshire.

The train travels along the heritage line and as it does, passengers get to enjoy a range of sandwiches, other savoury nibbles and sweet treats.

The experience will be running on November 27 and December 4, 11 and 18.

Tickets cost £85 per person and the experience is for those aged 16 and over.

All Aboard for Festive Dining

Down in Devon, the South Devon Railway is running the ‘All Aboard for Festive Dining’ experience.

Dubbed to be “one of Britain’s most nostalgic rail journeys”, passengers will be able to see the stunning Dart Valley scenery as well as hear the chugs of the steam engine.

Passengers can choose from four different experiences.

In the 1950s Restaurant Car, guests can enjoy a Festive Ploughman’s Lunch with local cheeses, chutneys and bread, or opt for Festive Afternoon Tea instead.

Alternatively, head to the 1925 Pullman Car ‘Lydia’ for a spot of luxury dining in Winston Churchill‘s former dining carriage.

In this carriage, guests can have a Pullman Festive Afternoon Tea or the Pullman Christmas Lunch.

The festive dining experiences run throughout December, costing from £69.95 per person.

Kent & East Sussex Railway (K&ESR) Santa Specials

The Kent & East Sussex Railway will feature Santa Specials this festive period.

The experience lasts 75 minutes, and passengers get to have gifts hand delivered by Santa.

On board, there are also a number of family photo opportunities and complimentary hot drinks (which includes mulled wine for adults).

You also get entry to the Winter Wonderland marquee and unlimited rides on the vintage gallopers at Tenterden Town Station.

With the Bronze package, passengers get a complimentary refreshment pack, containing a mince pie for each adult and a chocolate bar for each child.

Passengers in Silver and Gold class carriages then get to meet Jingle and Sparkle, Santa’s Head Elves.

There are Silver first class and Gold premium class packages as well.

The 2025 Santa Specials run every weekend from November 29 until December 21, plus December 23 and Christmas Eve.

Tickets cost from £30 per person (based on booking a table of four for £120).

Elf Express

The Strathspey Railway travels through the Cairngorms National Park on a heritage steam train, and for the festive season there will be elves onboard with the passengers.

Kids even get the chance to meet Santa.

A trolley will also operate on board with seasonal treats, like the Festive Steam Tea with sandwiches and cakes, hot chocolate and prosecco.

The train is running on selected Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from December 6.

Steam Illuminations

Along the Watercress Line in Hampshire you could hop on board the Steam Illuminations train – a train wrapped in LED lights.

Travelling from Alresford or Alton, the heritage steam train dates back to between the 20s and the 30s.

The journey lasts one hour and 45 minutes, and passengers will see illuminations along the way.

There are even ‘singing’ Christmas trees at Alresford.

The train is operating on various dates from November 28 to January 4 and it costs from £34 for adults and children.

Epping Ongar Railway Santa Specials

Families heading on the Epping Ongar Railway Santa Specials start their journey before they reach the station.

As they can hop on a vintage London bus at Epping Underground station or in Ongar, to get to North Weald Station – and you’ll spot different festive characters will be walking around.

Then once on board, the train will head off on a return journey via Epping Forest.

The Santa Specials trains will be running on November 29 and 30 and on December 6, 7, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24.

Tickets start at £65 per two people.

Bluebell Railway SteamLights

The Bluebell Railway SteamLights train heads off through the Sussex countryside, with passengers able to spot festive-themed scenes along the way.

Then the train arrives at Horsted Keynes Station, with passengers able to get off and take pictures of the train which is entirely covered in lights for 30 minutes.

The train then heads back to Sheffield Park, with the experience lasting around two hours in total.

The experience is running from November 22 to December 28 and tickets start from £35 per person.

Christmas Train of Lights

Located along Dartmouth Steam Railway in Devon is the Christmas Train of Lights – supposedly the UK’s first ever steam train of lights, according to the operator’s website.

Both a spectacle from the inside and the outside, passengers will get to experience lineside displays and a number of festive surprises throughout the journey.

They will run from November 28 to December 30.

Tickets cost £29.95 per adult and £21.95 per child.

East Somerset Railway Santa Paws

One for families with a much-loved pooch is the East Somerset Railway Santa Paws experience.

Four-legged friends aren’t left out of the fun on this one as you can bring them along to meet Santa.

There are lots of photo opportunities and your pooch even gets a special gift.

The experience will run on December 6 and 7.

In Tallinn, Estonia, you will find the most beautiful Christmas market in the world

Last Christmas, Life reporter Christopher Megrath opted to forgo the typical British yuletide markets and venture to a less frequented European destination steeped in history. Christopher is chuffed he did because the Old Town Christmas market in Tallinn, Estonia, was hands down the most stunning one he has ever seen.

Unlike its renowned Christmas market competitors in cities like Vienna, Cologne, or Salzburg, Tallinn’s market is humble in size. He had never heard it brought up in chats about Christmas markets, nor did he know anyone who had even set foot in the country, yet what it lacks in global recognition it more than compensates for with its captivating setting, snug atmosphere and magical allure.

The Tallinn Christmas Market is nestled in the Town Hall Square. At its heart is the Christmas tree, which holds the title of the most significant Christmas tree in Estonia and has been erected in Town Hall Square since 1441, making it the first Christmas tree ever to be showcased in Europe.

The Town Square is relatively compact – you could stroll from one side to the other in a brisk minute. Christopher managed to clock up more than an hour during his visit thanks to the plethora of stalls, live music and scrumptious food on offer.

Just like a scene out of a film, snow gently started to fall and accumulate on the ground throughout the day. The warm glow of lights draped across the square felt snug in an otherwise frosty wonderland, with the 15th-century Town Hall Tower dominating the backdrop of every snapshot, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The Christmas market has everything you could possibly want – handcrafted baubles, sweet delights like chocolate and toffee, tree ornaments and cosy winter wear like hats, scarves and gloves. As per his personal tradition, Christopher made sure to bring back a good assortment of knick-knacks for his foreign holiday memento collection, including a miniature cathedral and town hall for around €20.

You don’t have to go far for some genuine Estonian grub, as Christopher managed to get verivorst (blood sausage) without even leaving the square. Although it’s not something he would recommend, there’s a vast array of truffles, gingerbread and sweets to indulge in if you’re more inclined towards sugary treats.

After several rounds of the market in search of new finds, Christopher found myself settling on the designated sideline benches with a hot cup of glögg – the Estonian term for mulled wine. A stage was erected at the front of the square where children performed and music filled the afternoon, contributing to an already festive atmosphere.

Christopher couldn’t fathom how picture-perfect the Christmas market was until he witnessed it firsthand. The quintessential depiction of the winter experience is brought to life by Tallinn, from the scenic setting to the festive food, drink and goods available.

The gentle snowfall throughout the day felt like it could’ve been a hired actor at this point.

Moreover, once you’ve had your fill of the market, there’s a wealth of attractions in the surrounding area. You’ll find yourself amidst contemporary shopping venues and eateries, ideal for a brief respite or a return to normality.

Winding cobbled streets will guide you uphill to Tallinn’s Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an Eastern Orthodox marvel where visitors can glimpse its breathtaking interior. The UNESCO World Heritage site is home to a plethora of hidden treasures if you’re up for the hunt, such as Maiasmokk, Tallinn’s oldest café dating back to 1864, and Pierre Chocolaterie nestled in the secluded Masters’ Courtyard.

Christopher would suggest simply losing yourself in the labyrinthine streets and secret pathways, allowing them to lead you to ancient castle walls and stunning town vistas.

If you’re on the hunt for a unique Christmas experience that still retains the holiday spirit, a trip to Tallinn’s Old Town Christmas market won’t disappoint.

Return flights to Tallinn from Manchester Airport are available for approximately £217, with a stopover in Helsinki en route. However, during his own visit, Christopher opted to stay in the Finnish capital and took a same-day return ferry to Tallinn for around €40, creating a relatively laid-back excursion that combined two holidays in one.

CHRISTMAS markets sound fun and cosy, walking around cobbled streets with a cup of mulled wine and gazing up at twinkling light – but no one enjoys doing that in the pouring rain.

But there’s one place in the UK that has an incredible light trail, plenty of food, ice skating and it’s all inside.

During the day, the Eden Project in Cornwall is home to beautiful famous tropical gardens showing off exotic plants and flowers.

But come 4pm from the end of November, it turns into a winter wonderland where kids can meet Father Christmas and families can skate across the indoor ice rink.

Christmas at the Eden Project runs from Friday November 21, 2025 to Sunday January 4, 2026.

Entry to the domes for the Christmas lights between 4-8PM requires two tickets – the standard entry at £38 (for adults if bought in advance) and the specific Christmas experience which is £5.50pp.

Visiting Father Christmas also requires standard entry along with the experience ticket which is £32 – entry for one adult and one child.

The ice rink is open from now until February 2026, visitors can book a general skate session which is 40-minutes long and costs £13 for adults and £10 for children.

There are also family-fun session on selected mornings, parent & toddler ice play and even ice skating lessons.

THERE is a charming, small Italian city that hosts a quiet Christmas market for less than the cost of visiting one in the UK.

The tiny city of Arezzo located in the Tuscan hills of Italy features the country’s largest Christmas market that is themed like an Alpine village.

Each winter, according to Visit Tuscany, Arezzo becomes a “Christmas City” in the medieval centre, Piazza Grande, with stalls selling handmade gifts.

In fact, the gifts come from all over, with exhibitors travelling from the Tyrol, Germany and Austria to the market to sell wood carvings, ceramics, and hand-painted Christmas decorations.

You can expect over 640,000 LED lights, a Ferris wheel that offers amazing panoramic views and Santa’s house too.

For something to drink, opt for a steaming mug of glühwein – a traditional German hot mulled wine with cinnamon, cloves, star anise and citrus fruits.

Other stops along the route include Terni, Spoleto, Foligno, Spello, Assisi, and Perugia.

The train will operate every Sunday from November 30 to January 11, departing Rome at 8:30am and arriving in Arezzo at 12:10pm.

The train will then leave Arezzo at 5:30pm and arrive back in Rome at 10:42pm.

Passengers can book either first class or second class, and there is a dining carriage onboard too – expect mulled wine, roast chestnuts and traditional treats.

Return tickets on the train cost just €62 (around £54).

And with cheap flights to Rome, you can head to Arezzo’s Christmas market for cheaper than a UK staycation.

Prices for a full stay and the Christmas train cost from just £250, which is 44 per cent less than heading to Edinburgh around the same period, according to First Choice.

But travellers don’t need to stay in Arezzo – they could opt to stay in Rome instead.

Kevin Nelson, managing director at First Choice said: “Rome might not be the first place you think of for a Christmas break, but that’s exactly what makes it such a smart choice.

“Pairing the city’s festive charm with a proper Alpine-style market in Arezzo gives you two authentic experiences for the price of one – it’s the ultimate festive hack.”

First Choice’s Rome package starts from just £184 per person for three nights this December, and this includes return flights to the city and a central hotel, such as Rome Garden.

Add in the cost of the train to Arezzo and back, the holiday costs just £238 per person.

And if you were planning the trip on your own, return flights from Birmingham, Manchester and London all cost around £27 in December.

A hotel in the centre of Rome then costs as little as £38 per night, so if you stayed for two nights, you’d spend around £238.

Both of these options would cost less than heading to the Birmingham‘s Frankfurt Christmas Market for a weekend, where a return train ticket costs about £35 from London and a hotel will set you back around £100 a night.

And that’s before battling the prices of the market – a pint cost £7 last year and a bratwurst around £10.

Before you know it, you’ve spent over £250.

Unless you’re staying in a hostel, a mid-range weekend away for two, anywhere in the UK usually costs £350 to £500.

So why not head to the charming Italian city instead?

Plus, the cheapest Christmas market in the UK with quaint stalls, bargain food and hardly any crowds.

ONE of Yorkshire’s prettiest towns is set for superstardom this December, as it stars in a new Christmas film featuring some of Hollywood’s top actors.

Earlier this year, Hollywood stars like Kiefer Sutherland, Rebel Wilson and EastEnders‘ Danny Dyer descended on Knaresborough for the upcoming movie, Tinsel Town.

Between January and February 2025, cast and crew were spotted in the Yorkshire town, in areas like Castlegate, Riverside, and Green Dragon Yard.

Filming of the Sky Original Christmas movie meant that the festive decorations were up for months longer than usual.

The film, set to be released n November 28, will see Kiefer Sutherland play Bradley Mack, a failed Hollywood action star ending up in a small, snow-dusted village to star in the town’s eccentric production of Cinderella.

It’s here that he encounters a number of oddball locals, one of whom is no-nonsense choreographer Jill, played by Rebel Wilson.

It’s no wonder Knaresborough was picked as a filming location, as The Sun’s Katrina Turrill, who hails from the town, reckons it’s the “most beautiful town in the country” and “picture perfect”.

Knaresborough has pretty waterfront cafes and the opportunity to canoe down the river, while watching steam trains travel over the viaduct.

Katrina said: “If you venture down by the river from either Bond End or walking down the steps at the castle you’ll stand at the foot of the iconic viaduct. 

“Amongst the cafes and houses are two boat hire places – Blenkhorn’s and Marigold Cafe & Boating.  Both are open daily, weather permitting, and are a great way to soak up the stunning scenery.

“No visit to Knaresborough is complete without heading to Knaresborough Castle for the best view of the viaduct. 

“You don’t need to pay to enter the castle grounds, and I recommend seeing the view during the day and at night time, with the viaduct all lit up.”

Katrina also suggested checking out the many pubs in the area from Blind Jack’s in the market square, to Carriages.

As for attractions, there’s Mother Shipton’s Cave which is named after the Yorkshire prophetess who predicted many things, including the great fire of London and the black death.

It’s also the oldest tourist attraction to charge a fee in England, and has been open to visitors since 1630.

The town is also lobbying for cash to buy a tourist land train, which would mean visitors could easily go exploring without having to climb steep hills and steps.

A previous grant to get a land train was rejected due to “concerns over the scheme’s viability”, as reported by the BBC.

Now, the Knaresborough & District Chamber, which submitted the bid, is looking for alternative funding to get the service started.

The hope is that the land train would increase the number of visitors to all of Knaresborough, from the river to the main town.

One of the local council members told the BBC that visitors who visit usually wander around the castle and marketplace but don’t go down to the river because of the steep hill and steps.

If the land train becomes a reality, it would join other UK towns which run services generally during the summer.

Weymouth has its very own land train which runs across the promenade, meanwhile Bridlington has two trains, one which heads north, and the other, south.

Other popular destinations with land trains include Hull, Torquay, Hunstanton and Scarborough – each charges between £2-£6 per journey.

Hutton-Le-Hole is said to be one of the last unspoiled villages in the UK, thanks to its very quaint houses and attractions.

Home to just 400 locals, it has been named one of Yorkshire‘s “best looking villages” by Lonely Planet, as well as one of the UK’s prettiest by Conde Nast Traveller.

Jane Austen fans will recognise it, having featured in the Death Comes To Pemberley BBC drama.

In the summer, locals sit on the village green, with the sloped grass leading into the river to cool off.

But the village is just as beautiful in autumn with the trees turning bright orange.

Most of the sheep are free-roaming, so expect to see a few munching on the grass.

If you fancy some retail therapy, The Chocolate Factory, which opened 20 years ago, is one of the top attractions.

Despite being small, there are a number of places you can stay like The Crown Inn and The Barn Guesthouse or a number of small B&Bs.

Here’s another Yorkshire village that looks like it is from the 18th century – where every front door is the same colour.

Plus, the pretty English town that attracts thousands of tourists a year with iconic shops and cosy barn stays.

I LIVE between four of the biggest Victorian Christmas markets in the UK, and this year they all take place over one weekend – with a brand-new one popping up nearby for the first time.

The Midlands mecca of Christmas Markets are Worcester, Lichfield, Matlock and Stratford-Upon-Avon.

To make the most of the Midlands markets, I would suggest checking out Lichfield on Thursday December 4.

It’s the first year for this four-day event and takes just 10 minutes by train from Tamworth, so you could do a couple of hours in the evening there to kickstart your weekend of wandering the street stalls. 

Tamworth has two Premier Inns, which make a great budget base with double rooms starting at £41.

There’s also a Travelodge within walking distance in the railway station, with double rooms for £57 that weekend.

The prettiest Christmas markets in Britain – with hotel stays from £37

Tamworth’s got plenty of other Christmas attractions too if you need a break from shopping. With the chance to enjoy sledging, a mini panto and snow trail at Santa’s Winter Wonderland at the SnowDome indoor ski slope.

Tamworth Castle will also be hosting Father Christmas fun, with tickets costing £17 for children and £12.50 for adults, which includes a gift and a bespoke keepsake.

Plus it has easy rail access to Birmingham’s German market, one of the biggest in the UK, if you just can’t get enough of the festive shopping vibe. 

The next day, head to Worcester, 50 minutes from Tamworth by train.

Established in 1992, this is the longest running of the fairs with more than 200 stalls to peruse.

It has costumed characters including Sherlock Holmes and Scrooge roaming the streets, as well as stilt walkers, live music and a carousel, and after dark it feels like you’ve stepped into the pages of a Christmas Carol.

If you’re after something a little bit different, check out the Gin Lane immersive experience on either the Friday or Saturday evening to see the dark side of Victorian street life.

Then take a drive down to Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday 6, with Morris dancers and live entertainment aplenty.

Car parking does get full up quickly, but there’s a park and ride scheme at Bishopton.

You can pop into some of the Shakespeare houses while you’re in town, catch a play or take a stroll along the river to get away from the crowds.

If you’re relying on public transport to get you around, you’d be best to head to Matlock on Sunday December 7, as it takes an hour by rail from Tamworth, which is quicker than the train on other days.

There’s also a grand finale Christmas fireworks display on the Sunday at 5.30pm, which would be the perfect way to celebrate the end of your market marathon if you’ve managed four days of bagging bargains, while tucking into festive treats like roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.

You can even arrive in style if you’re taking the car, as you can park free at Rowsley South station and then take a heritage train run by Peak Rail to get to the Victorian market.

Chatsworth House is just half an hour away from Matlock by bus or car and will be dressed to impress as it hosts its own Christmas attractions, including a festive market, throughout November and December.

A travel influencer has shared her top tips for budget-friendly trips to some of Europe’s best destinations for Christmas markets – without taking a second off work

Mainland Europe is blessed with dozens of renowned Christmas markets, making these stunning cities extra magical at the festive period. But the cost of heading abroad for a worthwhile trip to places like Berlin or Copenhagen can often put us off even trying. Thankfully, one travel influencer has the answer.

TikTok user Caitlin Pagano has trawled through Skyscanner for budget flights to a handful of beautiful city destinations where Christmas shopping delights tourists and locals alike. Taking the stress out of finding cheap flights, Caitlin has picked out 8 European cities that offer return trips for less than £150.

What’s more, she’s made it so you don’t even need to take time off work. Caitlin’s flight picks are all scheduled to leave on Friday, December 12 after 6pm and arriving back in the UK before midnight on Sunday, December 14.

While the price now differs slightly from when she highlighted the trips in her TikTok post, all of the round trips still cost less than £200. The cheapest is a £70 trip to Gothenburg in Sweden via Ryanair from London Stansted airport.

Caitlin captioned her post: “9-5 people, I got you! Flying out late on a Friday with return flights on a Sunday evening.”

Gothenburg, Sweden

Most of the flights she suggested head out from Stansted, while three depart from other London airports. First up is her suggested trip to Gothenburg, which departs at 7.50pm and arrives at 10.45pm local time.

The flight back leaves Sweden at 10.30pm, getting you back on British shores by 11.25pm. The price has gone up from £48 return, but the £70 fare is a bargain to visit a market that’s been called “fantastic” by visitors on Tripadvisor.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Next up is a trip to Copenhagen for £144 return with Ryanair. Leave at 7.25pm to arrive at 10.20pm local time, before departing the city at 10.15pm and landing back at Stansted at 11.10pm.

However, the price for this journey to the capital of Denmark has now doubled – with fares at £144. Tripadvisor reviewers say the Tivoli Gardens market is like “stepping into a fairytale” with rides and entertainment.

Berlin, Germany

Berlin’s Christmas markets are legendary, and now thanks to a £151 fare you can enjoy them over the course of a weekend. While the cost is around 50% higher than Caitlin’s post suggested, you can enjoy Berlin at a reasonable rate thanks to Ryanair.

The flight leaves Stansted at 7pm, arriving in Germany at 9.50pm. After a weekend exploring markets that visitors called “spectacular”, you’ll be home in time for dinner. The return trip leaves Berlin at 6.30pm, and arrives at Stansted at 7.20pm.

Cologne, Germany

Another German destination famed for its Christmas markets, Cologne’s gothic architecture is the perfect backdrop for festive fun. However, it’s also the most expensive destination on the list.

Prices have nearly doubled since Caitlin’s post, but a trip to the iconic market in the shadow of Cologne’s “imposing” cathedral is well worth the cost. Ryanair offers flights for £199 from Stansted at 6.35pm, arriving at 8.55pm.

The return trip at 2pm on Sunday means you’ll get back at 2.20pm UK time, so make the most of the Saturday to take in all Cologne has to offer. Tripadvisor reviewers hailed the markets, labelling it “amazing” and “magical”.

Gdansk, Poland

Christmas markets in Gdansk leave this “stunning” city “twinkling” at night, according to one Tripadvisor reviewer. And it’s also the second cheapest escape on Caitlin’s list, with prices starting at £89 at the time of writing.

That fare will get you from to Gdansk by 10.40pm, having taken a Ryanair flight operated by Buzz at 7.20pm from Stansted. The return journey lands just before midnight, and is operated by Malta Air – leaving Gdansk at 10.30pm and arriving at Stansted at 11.50pm.

Vienna, Austria

If flying from Stansted isn’t convenient, there are other options available. A trip to the “dazzling” Christmas markets in Vienna was labelled as a “must-do” by one Tripadvisor user.

The Austrian capital, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, is less than two and a half hours away from London via plane. Austrian Airlines offer a £184 return journey that leaves London Heathrow at 7.25pm, arriving at 10.40pm.

The return leaves Vienna International Airport at 5.15pm, and lands in the UK at 6.40pm. Although the time in the city is slightly shorter than other destinations, Tripadvisor reviews recommend it as being “probably the most beautiful city to visit for Christmas”.

Budapest, Hungary

Another alternative airport to fly from offering easy, affordable flights to Europe’s stunning Christmas markets is London Luton, where you can reach Budapest’s festive scenes. Wizz Air offer return flights for just under £200.

Leaving Luton at 7.20pm, the outgoing flight touches down in Hungary at 10.50pm local time. The next day, you can enjoy a “buzzing” market, with a “beautiful” lights show projected onto the Basilica.

Flights are a little earlier, unfortunately. Wizz Air’s jet takes off from Budapest at 4.55pm, arriving back at Luton at 6.40pm.

Edinburgh

If you want to stay in the UK, Caitlin highlighted a trip to Edinburgh – which, by air, takes just 85 minutes. Although Caitlin’s suggested journey had skyrockets in price from the original £88 fare, for just £5 more than that you can still enjoy all the sights and sounds in Scotland without losing much time.

An Easyjet flight to Edinburgh leaves Stansted at 9.45pm, arriving at 11pm. The return journey, run by Ryanair, leaves at 8.20pm and arrives at 9.45pm – all for £93.

We’ve scoured the UK for the best festive holiday park deals on offer, with everything from Christmas entertainment and crafts to Santa’s grottos, for less than the price of a McDonald’s.

The three-night breaks work out as little as £9 per person and most cost under £15pp a night – at award-winning parks with waterparks, fairgrounds, as well as access to the UK’s best parks and beaches.

The best value break we could find over the Christmas week, including Christmas Day, is at the beautiful Craig Tara Holiday Park on the Scottish coast in Ayrshire, with stunning views of Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran.

With chances of a white Christmas here pretty high, this is a magical place to spend the big day.

For a winter break, the resort has a choice of indoor activities, including a water park with slides and an indoor sports complex called Airspace, which has everything from roller discos to crazy golf, a multi-level soft play area and a climbing wall.

Festive offerings include make-a-bear workshops, sand bottle creations, pic ‘n’ paint, bauble-making, stocking workshops, reindeer food, and family activities with a Christmas twist.

Plus, children can meet Santa in his grotto, though there is likely an extra fee for this, and it should be booked in advance. 

There is also an on-site pantomime of Jack and the Beanstalk, special festive shows from the Seaside Squad, lots of interactive fun with the elves and plenty of opportunities for a boogie.

If you’re staying for Christmas Day itself, you are able to book your dinner now, subject to availability.

Haven parks that have a J D Wetherspoon pub as their main venue (Primrose Valley, Kent Coast, Devon Cliffs) will also be open for Christmas Day table bookings, and you’ll choose from the menu on the day.

The other Haven parks hosting festive stays are: Seton Sands, Scotland, Blackpool, Devon Cliffs, North Wales, Kent Coast, Primrose Valley, Yorkshire, Dorset and Norfolk.

The price per night for Haven Craig Tara is £54.75 (based on four nights in a three-bed holiday caravan, which sleeps six), which works out at £9.12pp a night.

Butlin’s is known for offering exceptional value family breaks, and Christmas is no exception.

Across its three holiday parks in Bognor Regis, Skegness and Minehead, Butlin’s offers festive breaks from November and specially-priced Christmas breaks, which run over Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The huge parks get a magical makeover with fairy lights, decorations and indoor snow.

When you arrive, you’ll be rocking around the Christmas tree at the family welcome party.

Other special additions include a festive show, Christmas movies, a present drop, a firework display, children’s craft workshops and winter character meet-and-greets, all included in the price.

Better still, every family gets a visit to Santa’s Grotto for the Father Christmas’ Express Delivery, and each child gets a gift, fully included in the price.

Dining packages are available at Butlin’s and usually work out as excellent value. During the festive breaks, expect to see roasts with all the trimmings and mince pies, which aren’t available all year round.

Even if you decide to book without a dining package, the family can still sit down for a four-course Christmas dinner with all the trimmings for £58 per adult and £39 for kids. Choose from a set menu and finish up with coffee and mince pies.

The best value deal for Christmas week at Butlin’s is Skegness, which is £224 for four days (based on two adults and two children sharing). At only £14 per day per person, this is a superb seasonal staycation. 

Skegness has a huge weather-proof waterpark called Splash, which will also play host to a Christmas pool party during the festive breaks. 

There is also the award-winning Skypark, laser tag, bowling, a climbing wall, and go karts all on-site, as well as arcades and performances from the Redcoats.

Christmas Day breaks at Minehead and Bognor Regis come in a little bit more expensive, with Minehead starting at £15 per person and Bognor Regis at £22.50 per person.

Parkdean Resorts at Trecco Park, Wales

Eight Parkdean Resorts are hosting Christmas Getaway breaks, with Trecco Park in Wales being the best value for money over Christmas Day.

Fun, festive activities include feeding Santa’s reindeer, a ‘pawsome’ Christmas party with the characters from Paw Patrol, breakfast with Santa, ice skating, a search for Santa game, a kids’ Christmas party and bauble-making workshops for the whole family. 

Plus, children can meet Santa when he comes to visit the on-site grotto.

One of the largest holiday parks in Europe, Trecco Bay – on the stunning Wales Coastal Path, spanning approximately 10 miles from Ogmore to Sker Point – is a beautiful site that overlooks the water. 

It’s probably too cold for a dip – unless you’re feeling particularly brave – but perfect for a Boxing Day walk.

Inside the large clubhouse, there is an amusement arcade and bowling, as well as the Aloha cocktail bar for adults and festive movie nights.

On Christmas Day, restaurants are closed for pre-booked Christmas lunch. Priced separately, the four-course dinner and nibbles are £49.99 for adults and £29.99 for kids 12 and under.

Over 21s get a welcome glass of prosecco too. Spaces are limited so booking in advance is essential. 

The price for a four-night stay at Trecco Bay is £473, staying in a four-bed Bronze caravan that sleeps six people, which works out at £19.70 per person. 

If you don’t want to go over Christmas Day, breaks for a family of four start from £169 (£42.25 per night) and include all the seasonal extras.

Hoseasons Dartmoor View, Devon

Hoseasons holiday parks tend to be quieter and more chilled-out than some of the other major brands. 

Over Christmas, there are no extras at the park itself, but they do make for brilliant budget places to stay for families who just want to get away for Christmas week. 

You’re very much left to your own devices, meaning a turkey dinner in your cabin.

The best deal is at Hoseasons Dartmoor View in Devon. This pretty park is set close to Dartmoor National Park, with easy access to a wealth of picture-postcard villages bursting with quaint shops and cosy, traditional pubs.

Nearby boozer The Globe Inn in Chagford is a local institution. It’s closed on Christmas Day, but they still have availability on Boxing Day if you fancy some good pub grub and festive atmosphere.

The price for a four-night stay in a standard caravan (sleeping six) is £259 for four nights, which works out at £10.79pp per person, per night.

Away Resorts, St Ives Bay, Cornwall

This friendly resort could not be in a more perfect location, surrounded by rolling hills and with its own private beach.

You may not be up for a seaside dip or cold water surf at St Ives Bay, but a Christmas Day walk on the beach is certainly one way to do Christmas a bit differently. 

There’s also an indoor pool, a clubhouse with arcades and live entertainment.

For Christmas, kids can become an elf recruit and join the Sleigh Team, do Christmas crafts, experience the Elf Slime Factory, make snow globes and post a letter to Santa at the Christmas Post Office. 

Families can also join Mrs Claus in her kitchen to bake Christmas cookies. 

A three-night stay in a Comfort Caravan (sleeping six) over Christmas is £213 for three nights, working out only £11.84 per night, per person.  

If you opt for Away Resorts’ Tattershall Lakes location in Lincolnshire, it’s slightly more expensive, but there is more on offer.

The price for three nights is £294 for a Comfort Caravan, sleeping eight, which is £98 per night (£12.25pp if there are eight of you!), but you also get access to the evening Christmas show and can book a Christmas Day dinner at the Tattershall Park Pub. 

Three-course Christmas dinner is £79.95 for adults and £39.95 for kids (under-5s £4.95).

NOT all Christmas markets are made the same – and one in the UK that might beat the rest is the on the grounds of a palace.

Hampton Court Palace has revealed what to expect from their festive market this year, which takes over the courtyard.

Inside will be more than 100 stalls selling everything festive – think gifts and christmas decorations to food and drink.

Live music will be performed throughout the day in the central bandstand, with many of the Christmas classics.

It only takes place over two weekends – December 5-7 and December 12-14 – so you need to be quick to get in.

You also need to book tickets, but they include access to the palace itself, as well as the gardens and the Hampton Court maze.

Also inside is the UK’s oldest surviving hedge maze, commissioned in 1700.

Covering a third of an acre, it takes around 20 minutes to get to the middle.

Kids will also love The Magic Garden, a huge wooden play structure with climbing frames, slides and towers.

And film buffs will recognise the palace from a number of massive films, including Sherlock Holmes, Pirate’s of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia and Bridgerton.

Previous tourists have said the palace is a better attraction than some in London.

One wrote: “Most tourists only end up circling around Buckingham Palace or get to see the Kensington Palace at most which are nothing compared to Hampton Court combined.

It may only be October, but many of us are already fantasising about a magical Christmas – and perhaps one final quick break before 2025 draws to a close.

And a European Christmas market that’s just over 2 hours from the UK has been declared the number one destination to visit this year for a “picture-perfect” escape.

Europe is celebrated for hosting some of the globe’s most enchanting Christmas markets that have delightful medieval backdrops, snow-covered pavements, sparkling illuminations, and fun festivities.

It’s essential viewing for both wanderlust seekers and anyone who adores the holiday period. Ranking the top 15 across the continent, The Travel Expert declared Krakow, Poland, as the finest to experience, reports Edinburgh Live.

The expert revealed: “Home to Europe’s largest market square, Krakow is an excellent choice for a Christmas market break. The massive main square in the centre of the old town comes alive with hundreds of market stalls selling handmade gifts and souvenirs as well as traditional local food and mulled wine to enjoy.”

What’s even more appealing, direct flights from UK airports cost as little as £36 via easyJet. If a Christmas escape is on your 2025 wish list, here’s what you can expect on a visit to Krakow.

What does Krakow have to offer?

According to Visit Krakow, the festive market has been staged in the Main Square since the early 14th century. Krakow boasts three principal Christmas markets. The biggest can be found on Rynek Główny, the Main Square, while smaller festive gatherings operate at Plac Wolnica in Kazimierz and outside the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre.

Each market showcases a magnificent selection of seasonal presents and handicrafts, alongside substantial food offerings and warming mulled beverages. “In addition to pierogi dumplings and traditional Polish soups, there are kiosks selling skewers of meat and delicious grilled sheep cheese,” the website said. “Vodkas, liqueurs, and spirits really take the edge off a winter’s night. For pudding, there are waffles, gingerbread biscuits, and Eastern European pastries.”

Beyond food and drink, Krakow provides numerous seasonal activities. The Old Town and Kazimierz markets showcase stages hosting holiday performances throughout December, while the Galeria Krakowska market includes a small ice rink.

A standout feature of the city’s festive customs is the szopki krakowskie nativity scenes. Rather than conventional nativity displays, these vibrantly coloured models draw inspiration from the city’s churches and cathedrals.

A representative from Krakow Christmas’ official website also declared: “Krakow Christmas market is one of the most picture-perfect settings for a Christmas market that you can imagine. Krakow’s Main Square is huge.

“It is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, and amongst all the Christmas market stalls is the beautiful twin-towered basilica of St Mary’s. In the centre of the square is the Cloth Hall. In Polish, the Cloth Hall is called Sukiennice (pronounced Sukyenitse). Krakow’s Cloth Hall is THE place to go for souvenirs throughout the whole year, and Christmas-time is no exception.”

The blog page also suggests there may be a chance of a white Christmas for those seeking the perfect winter wonderland. Experts say snow is most likely to fall in southern Poland, and Krakow sits close to the Tatra mountain, offering the city a much stronger prospect of a snowy backdrop – though, as ever, the weather remains unpredictable.

Is Krakow worth a visit?

A travel blogger called The Sunshine Seeker, who lived in Krakow and visited it at least 10 times, shared her view on whether the market is genuinely excellent. She said: “So is Krakow Christmas Market worth visiting? My answer is YES, but… It is worth it because Krakow is worth it.

“Krakow is one of the most beautiful yet affordable weekend getaways in Europe. However, I wouldn’t plan a visit to Krakow just for the Christmas Market, there are better destinations such as Dresden and Strasbourg for that. Or Wroclaw Christmas Market which is the largest in Poland.”

If you’re planning a visit, the 2025 market is set to open on November 28 and will run until December 26, with some stalls remaining open through the New Year. Direct flights from Edinburgh Airport to Krakow cost as little as £35.99 via easyJet. According to the Sunshine Seeker, the Christmas Market is open from around 10:00 until 8:00 pm, and the food stalls are open even later.

The optimal time to experience Krakow Christmas Market is during the week when it’s dark as it will allow you to soak up the atmosphere. Sundays are extremely busy. Krakow is a walkable city, meaning tourists can stroll to the Christmas Market from most hotels.

“I always recommend you stay in Kazmierz, my favourite neighbourhood in Krakow, or somewhere along the park that encircles the Old Town,” said the blogger. She continued: “I find Krakow Christmas Market one of Europe’s most affordable.

“The market has some more expensive items; however, Krakow, and Poland in general, is still quite affordable. You can expect to pay €3 – €10 for food, €4.5 for a draft beer and $5.5 for mulled wine.”

It’s not long now until Christmas celebrations kick off across the country, with festive markets, ice rinks, and the like returning to many cities and towns. In London, there will be no shortage of family-friendly events for anyone looking to get into the festive spirit.

2025 also sees the return of a festive fayre that’s been described as “the most underrated Christmas market in London.” The Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre returns for two weekends in December, running between December 5-7 and 12-14.

One previous visitor who shared high praise for the event recommended the ticketed event in a social media video. Posting on TikTok as @travelfromessex, the blogging duo wrote: “If you are planning on hitting a London Christmas market this year make it Hampton Court Palaces Festive Fayre!

“In our opinion it’s the most underrated Christmas market in London! Running on 5-7 & 12-14 December 2025, book your ticket now. You can wander the palace & grounds during your visit too! It is just a privilege to walk around this stunning place. We kicked off our festive activities by visiting the Palace, the Christmas fayre, followed by ice-skating.

“Yes, a lot of things are expensive, but I considered this as a treat; we ate several times from the wonderful stalls. We are Royal Palaces Members so enjoyed benefits there of course. We all came away with smiles on our faces. Lovely staff.”
