If you’re planning a Christmas break abroad or visiting family, Ryanair has released helpful tips for transporting your gifts safely to your destination, and you may want to hold off on wrapping them up

Christmas is one of the busiest travel times, and in addition to the surge in traveller numbers, one thing that can hold up security lines and cause issues at airports is the amount of Christmas gifts packed into suitcases.

That’s why Ryanair has put together a guide on how to pack your presents, and included a stark warning about wrapping your gifts before you put them in your suitcase. If you’re planning a Christmas trip and are looking to get your gifts organised, then you might want to heed the budget airline’s advice and avoid wrapping them before you go.

“Don’t spend hours intricately wrapping gifts to carry in your hand luggage. Wrapped gifts may be opened, searched and screened by airport security staff,” a statement from Ryanair read.

Even with technology such as scanners available, airport staff may need to open your suitcase and check certain items, which means your beautiful wrapping paper could be torn off your gifts before you even get them under the tree. Ryanair’s advice, as an alternative, is to pack the unwrapped gifts and bringing a gift bag folded flat in your suitcase, which you can then use when you arrive.

The budget airline also gave advice to festive travellers about carrying valuables, advising them to place expensive or sentimental items in their smaller hand luggage bag, which goes under the seat in front of them. Avoid placing them in checked baggage or your larger cabin bag, as they may end up in the hold if the overhead lockers are full.

There was also a reminder not to carry items that look like weapons in your hand luggage. Avoid buying toy guns or slingshots for the kids in your family, as they can cause issues at security.

Passengers should also wait until they reach their destination to buy Christmas crackers. While they only give a small bang, these items are considered explosives. Party items, including sparklers, party poppers, and fireworks, should also be left at home.

Many people will be buying liquid gifts for loved ones, whether it’s a bottle of perfume, toiletries, or alcohol, so it’s worth checking the liquid rules for your arrival and departure airports. If you’re looking to buy a bottle of whiskey or a posh perfume, it may be worth waiting and getting them in duty-free, as you can then take your shopping bag on the plane with you.

While most UK airports still have the standard 100ml volume limits in place for hand luggage, some destinations, such as Dublin Airport, have relaxed their liquid rules, allowing containers of up to two litres to be carried through.

And finally, if you’re taking Christmas food with you, remember that items such as jam, preserves, soups, and custard count as liquid, so should be packed into your checked luggage. Check your departure airport’s official website for information and the latest updates to liquid rules.

Nov. 25 (UPI) — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday President Donald Trump is likely to select the next chair of the Federal Reserve before Christmas.

Bessent made the remarks in an interview on CNBC, where he offered an update on his work overseeing the search for a successor to Jerome Powell, the current chair whose term ends in May 2026. Trump has pressured Powell to lower interest rates, raising questions about the independence of the nation’s central bank.

In the interview, Bessent said he was seeking a simpler and more subtle role for the Fed, which plays a pivotal role in financial markets and the economy.

“I think we’ve got to kind of simplify things,” he said. “I think it’s time for the Fed just to move back into the background, like, it used to do, calm things down and work for the American people.”

Since returning to the White House, Trump has lobbed criticisms at Powell over his cautious approach to lowering interest rates after a period of high inflation. Trump, who first appointed Powell, has called him a “clown” and openly talked about wanting to fire him.

Inflation is currently at 3%, just shy of the Fed’s 2% target. But members of the Federal Open Market Committee, the bank’s primary monetary policy-setting body, were divided on whether to support rate cuts at its December meeting.

Further complicating the Fed’s work is news that the ​​Consumer Price Index report for October will not be available for its upcoming meeting. The monthly report presents a snapshot of consumer prices, but the recent government shutdown delayed its release.

Bessent said the list of candidates for Fed chair has been narrowed to five and work was progressing well. But he noted the final pick is up to Trump “whether it’s before the Christmas holidays or in the new year.”

Just across the road, Celtic Dragon Retro presents a different kind of treasure chest, brimming with retro game consoles and games, collectable toys and comics. You’ll discover everything from Pokémon and WWE, Star Wars, Marvel and DC to Disney.

They even offer gaming tables for a breather during your shopping spree! Treorchy’s high street also features an array of clothing shops, baby stores, drapers and jewellery shops worth a visit.

Places to eat and drink

Treorchy is teeming with coffee shops and snack spots, such as Hot Gossip, which is currently offering a large festive drinks menu.

The Cwm Farm Shop serves up a hearty breakfast, Sunday roast, homemade pies and pasties, and daily specials. Their cawl is particularly commendable, and many of the dishes use locally-sourced meat from the nearby farm owned by the same family.

For dinner, the Pencelli Hotel offers a full menu of pub classics, tapas items, curries and flatbreads. Alternatively, you can enjoy a pub meal or pizza at the Cardiff Arms Bistro, with dishes like beef short rib, grilled monkfish and prawn curry.

Christmas attractions

Treorchy is one of many towns in Rhondda Cynon Taf that hosts a Christmas celebration. This year, the parade will commence on Saturday, November 29.

Treorchy Library is set to spread some festive cheer with Santa Saturdays every weekend in December, where kids can meet Father Christmas in his grotto. Plus, late-night shopping will kick off on 3rd December and continue every Wednesday throughout the month.

For those who fancy a bit of an adventure, the upper Rhondda offers stunning views and invigorating hikes. Just take a drive up to the Bwlch hilltop for a breathtaking view over Treorchy and Cwmparc, or head to the top of the valley to the Rhigos viewpoint for a glimpse of Bannau Brycheiniog on a clear day.

One hike that’s a must for walkers is the Blwch mountain circular, a 13km stretch from Treorchy up to the viewpoint. And if you’re visiting from out of town, The Pencelli and Cardiff Arms Bistro both offer cosy accommodation options.

Bruges Christmas market is one of the most notable in Belgium, if not Europe, as the city transforms into a spectacular scene with Christmas trees, colourful fairy lights and charming wooden chalets.

The celebrations, also known as the “Winter Glow”, also welcome its glittering ice skating rink and a mesmerising light experience trail through the city.

Nestled in the heart of the city centre, the Christmas market will span over two locations, each area offering its own festive ambience.

In Grote Markt, you’ll find traditional wooden chalets adorned with gift inspiration, from handcrafted ornaments to Belgian chocolates, as well as an ice rink for gliding among the enchanting backdrop.

Another part of the Christmas market, albeit a little smaller, is in Simon Stevinplein, with a focus on “short-chain and craft products”.

Nearby, you’ll find cobbled streets with cosy cafés, where you can experience the scent of local chocolatiers while taking in the Gothic architecture of this well-preserved city.

You certainly won’t go hungry at the Christmas market with Belgian treats like fresh waffles and cheeses on offer, or a spiced mulled wine or traditional beer at the “IJsgloed” Winter Bar that overlooks the ice skating rink.

The bar is adorned with lights, decorations, wooden barstools, and barrels, creating a snug haven to soak up the festive scenes.

During a trip, you can also wander along the 3.5km light trail through the historic city to admire 10 fascinating light installations set within unsuspecting venues.

While Bruges is small, the intimate atmosphere and magical setting of “Winter Glow” that envelops the city, from November 21 to January 4, make it one of the most charming in Europe.

Furthermore, you can climb the 366 steps of the iconic 83-meter-high Belfry of Bruges (Belfort van Brugge) and be rewarded with panoramic views of the city.

You can also take a brisk walk along its winding canals through the city, often dubbed the “Venice of the North”, or wander through Minnewaterpark with its tranquil lake and serene surroundings.

What’s more, you can catch the Eurostar from London St Pancras International to Brussels Midi/Zuid in under two hours, before a quick hour train to Bruges, making it super easy for a winter getaway.

If you’re looking to step into the festive spirit, there’s a new Christmas market coming to a popular seaside area in the UK for the very first time, with a variety of stalls and seasonal treats.

It’s the most magical time of the year, when we start planning our festive day out – and there’s nowhere better than a Christmas market. And this year, the UK’s largest outdoor waterpark is welcoming its own for the very first time with free entry.

Stretching along the English Riviera on the South Devon coastline is Goodrington beach which is home to Splashdown Waterpark at Quaywest. The hugely popular attraction is the UK’s biggest outdoor waterpark, boasting 11 adrenaline-filled flume rides and a giant play area for young children.

During the warmer months, Splashdown Quaywest welcomes hundreds of visitors to race down their slides and this year had a record-breaking number of thrill-seekers. While the waterpark is currently closed until Spring 2026, it will host its first ever Christmas market during two weekends this December, boasting more than 30 stalls.

The new Christmas market is designed to bring more activity to the desirable seaside area of Goodrington throughout the year, along with a touch of festive cheer. Along with its local craft stalls offering gift inspiration, seasonal treats and festive drinks will also be available, accompanied by a range of fun-packed activities and entertainment for children.

The Christmas market will be held on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14, and again on Saturday, December 20 and Sunday, December 21 from 11.30am to 6.30pm. Joyfully, entry into the Christmas market will be free, with the event aimed at supporting local traders.

Group Marketing Director and co-owner of the waterpark, Jackie Richmond, told Torbay Weekly: “We are excited to be bringing the first of what we hope will be a number of fun events that will take place out of waterpark season. The Christmas Market Weekends and Festive Fridays will, we hope, bring vibrancy, community spirit and holiday cheer to locals and visitors alike.

“We love Goodrington and want to make it a focus for people both in the summer and beyond, creating something for our local community to enjoy. We hope this event will be something that we can grow year on year.”

Additionally, there will be another event called Festive Fridays, offering hot drinks and Bratwurst-style hot dogs from the Quaywest Snack Shack from 4pm to 6pm. You can grab a warming treat from the shack before a brisk walk along Goodrington beach on four consecutive Fridays on November 28, December 5, December 12 or December 19.

Aside from the famed waterpark, Goodrington is a popular destination for a seaside getaway, featuring Paignton Beach and its classic British pier nearby. While the weather will be brisk, this could be the ideal time to visit the Devonshire coast – shopping at the new Christmas market, taking a stroll along the beaches, and visiting some of the area’s beloved attractions, all while avoiding the usual summer holiday crowds.

What’s more, Paignton train station is just a short walk away from Splashdown Quaywest and Goodrington Beach, and there are plenty of hotels dotted along the coastline if you want to extend your stay.

IT’S the most wonderful time of the year, as Brits flock to Christmas markets to browse festive gifts and sip piping hot mulled wine.

Now, the country’s best eight spots for top-notch Christmas markets have been revealed, but notably missing one major city.

A survey of 4,000 people by consumer champion Which has revealed Brits’ favourite Christmas market destinations all over the country.

The top eight cities were: Bath, Chester, Durham, Winchester, Wells, Liverpool, Edinburgh, York and Belfast.

This means that Manchester was a glaring exception to the list, despite its markets offering 200 stalls across nine locations this year in the popular northern city.

The selection offers something for everyone, from quaint cobbled lanes to grand squares and gothic cathedrals.

Bath is already a tourist hotspot, a Regency gem which was voted the UK’s best medium-sized city this year.

It’s market offers 200 chalets where punters can peruse a massive selection of goods, with many of the stallholders based in the South West.

Expect everything from foraged jam to pet gifts.

In Northern Ireland, Belfast plays host to a market ideal for foodies, from crocodile burgers to local produce every weekend.

It also includes a funfair, and takes place at the steps of the grand Victorian City Hall building.

If you are looking to spot some WAGs doing a spot of Christmas browsing, Chester would be the city to head to.

With its 80 stalls spiralling out from it’s gothic town hall, customers will be delighted with the range of indie options like artisan liqueurs available in this footballer-favourite city.

It is also one of the better cities for accessibility like parking and lack of crowds.

Another historic northern city, Durham’s festive market is a handmade affair, with optional tickets to gain admission to the crafts and gift marquee of 120 stalls costing £4.50.

The free section of the market only has 30 stalls, so more minimalist than some of the others.

It lasts two days, between 5 and 7 December, so worth bearing in mind it could be extremely popular.

Scotland’s offering is found on the iconic East Princes Street in Edinburgh, where revellers can enjoy typical festive options like stocking fillers and gluhwein in the shadow of the city’s imposing castle.

The fair also has a Ferris wheel, and the market lasts into early January, offering the perfect place to celebrate Hogmanay.

Liverpool was crowned the best big city, and it’s Christmas market looks set to live up to the city’s top-rated culture and shopping.

St George’s Hall, with its statuesque columns and strings of twinkling lights, offers a beautiful backdrop to the festivities.

Down in Somerset, Wells has long been a hidden gem, with it’s 850 year old cathedral and moat filled with swans which was immortalised in the 2007 film Hot Fuzz.

Voted best small city this year, its market will last for one day, and one day only, on 6 December.

This is very much a market by and for locals, offering gifts crafted in the community, and some regional fare.

Another city most well-known for its stunning cathedral, Winchester is a classy pick for a refined market-goer.

The stalls are set out in front of the ancient landmark, and punters will peruse hand-painted buttons and horsehair brushes.

At the York Christmas Festival, traders operate out of alpine chalets decked with tinsel and wreaths.

Known for its winding lanes and generous Yorkshire hospitality, the city’s market is a staple, as it has been going for over 30 years.

It is a fantastic place to browse for gifts- anything from food and drink to art prints.

The list was created from Which’s best UK cities survey, which means every spot also boasts good-quality food and cultural activities as well as their markets.

Other cities which nearly made the cut included Newcastle, for its top-scoring food and drink offering, Glasgow for its cultural sites, and London, which boasts a plethora of markets.

Which also recommended the UK’s prettiest villages which might be worth a trip or stay this Christmas for their chocolate-box scenery.

Another good option would be Llangollen, a picturesque Welsh town with stunning views over the River Dee.

IT’S as two Welsh women with a drinks trolley come through the carriage calling everyone “babes” that I know I’m not in London anymore.

Instead, I on a train from Paddington to Swansea, where I’m headed to experience the most glamorous event in the Welsh city’s social calendar.

Called Beaujolais Day, it’s a celebration of the first chance to try the new Beaujolais wine – the Beaujolais Nouveau – from the year’s harvest.

French law dictates that Beaujolais Noveau can only be sold from the third Thursday of November – and Swansea has earned a reputation for marking the occasion in style.

The annual event sees Swansea’s bars buzzing, and its hotels, restaurants and beauty salons fully booked up to a year in advance.

I’ve been lucky enough to grab a room at Travelodge Swansea Central, which is in stumbling distance from all the action.

Yet I’m checking in the night before as I need to be on time for my sought-after salon appointment, with the standard of glam for Beaujolais Day off the scale.

“I’ve been doing make-up since 6am,” said make-up artist Morgan Thomas at The Colour Lounge, who started her day seeing clients at home, before heading to the salon for back-to-back appointments all day.

I’ve heard that in Swansea, Beaujolais Day is bigger than Christmas Day – is this true?

“Beaujolais, Christmas – it’s all mental!” says Morgan, who tells me: “Everyone wants full glam, lots of glitter, and heavy lashes.”

I wasn’t been lucky enough to snap up a slot with Morgan, but salon owner Benjamin Aldridge (aka Benjamin Stylist) has squeezed me in for a bouncy blowdry and pin curls.

My hair is washed and dried, then curled and individual sections are pinned to my head, using Kirby grips.

This is so the curls don’t drop before I go out, because my next port of call was to return to my hotel to get ready.

You’d think I’d feel self-conscious about walking through Swansea’s streets looking like Coronation Street cleaner Hilda Ogden.

However, nobody batted an eyelid, so I guess it was pretty standard to have left the salon like this on Beaujolais Day.

Having searched the hashtag #BeaujolaisDaySwansea on Instagram to look at posts from previous years, I had also been struck by the girls’ gorgeous dresses, which would not have been out of place in a Miss
World contest.

So back at the Travelodge, I squeezed into a Herve Leger bandage dress that I’d snapped up in TK Maxx ten years ago.

A bodycon dress isn’t the ideal attire for eating a slap-up meal, but the Swansea ladies had set the bar high and I could hardly head out in my jogging bottoms especially for an evening at Morgans, a Grade II listed, luxury four star hotel, and possibly the swankiest spot in Swansea.

Arriving at Morgans in the late afternoon, the place was so packed already that I could barely make my way across the dance floor to the staircase for dinner.

However, when I do make it to the dining room, it’s worth it, as the room was fully decorated with white tablecloths, red napkins and chairs decked out with gold bows.

As soon as I’m seated, a waitress brought me a glass of Prosecco before my first taste of Vichyssoise soup.

Pronounced veeshy-swarze (rhyming with cars) the soup is a clever choice for a Beaujolais Day dinner in Swansea, as it nods to both French and Welsh culture.

Created and named by a French chef, the main ingredient of Vichyssoise soup is a Welsh national emblem – the leek.

For the main, I enjoyed braised beef daube with bourguignon-style jus, carrots, green beans and mashed potato, combining a Burgundy dish with Welsh beef, followed by a lemon tart.

After eating, it was back downstairs to the busy nightclub area, despite it only being 7pm, still hours before a nightclub would usually open.

But what do the locals really think of the big day?

One of the first people I chat to is Rebecca, 35, who lives in Swansea and has been doing Beaujolais Day every year since she was 18.

She tells me it’s a family tradition, explaining: “It’s when we all get together for a catch-up before Christmas – and it’s adult time away from the kids.”

For Rebecca, Beaujolais Day started at 9am when she got her hair and
make-up done at her aunty’s Swansea salon, Gemma Davies Artistry of Hair.

“Six of us girls had wine and croissants in the salon while we got ready, and the boys went to Trams cafe for breakfast.”

After three hours of hair and make-up, the girls got changed in the salon and came straight to Morgans at lunch, spending the entire day there until their 10pm cabs home.

Like many people, Rebecca is drinking AU Vodka which she says is a Swansea tradition – the brand is co-founded by Swansea boy Charlie Morgan, son of Morgans Hotel owner and Swansea City Football Club
director, Martin Morgan.

The big question – did she drink any Beaujolais?

While they ordered it with her meal, she admitted it “wasn’t very nice, but its tradition”.

I also chatted to Michelle, 55, who lives in Swansea and is her first time celebrating Beaujolais Day in four years.

She said: “It’s the best day of the year! It’s wonderful to get together, and a lovely day out for all ages.

“Everyone dresses up and has a nice time.”

It’s not just Rebecca who wasn’t a fan of the famous wine – Michelle said they were sticking to the Sauvignon wine and gin.

Her friend Linda chipped in: “I’ve tried it before and it’s vile.”

Abbie, 28, who’s spending Beaujolais Day in Swansea for the first time, after previously celebrating in Cardiff, agreed too.

“I don’t like it,” she explained as she swapped her shoes for a pair of hotel slippers.

Although I’ve never seen this before when I’ve been out, Abbie’s wasn’t the only one wearing slippers, so perhaps it’s a life hack that’s exclusive to Swansea.

Jealous of Abbie’s comfy feet, I decided to call it a night and head back to my hotel via Wind Street, which is where everyone goes out, spotting long queues outside each bar.

Above the market, you’ll find igloo pods that can be hired as an escape from the winter chill. These heated igloos have views across the twinkling lights of Grey Street, and a full drinks menu will be available including mulled wine for the adults and hot chocolate for the kids.

After a leisurely stroll around the city, you’ll hop back on the Flying Scotsman to return to York station. The buffet car will be open for some late afternoon festive treats like mince pies and drinks before you board the Class 67 locomotive for your journey back to Peterborough.

The train departs from Finsbury Park at 9am, and is set to return by 10pm.

Tickets for this Christmas adventure are priced at £175 for an adult standard ticket and £155 for children. A first-class adult ticket will set you back £275.

The pub used to be a former train station signal box and was moved from Scunthorpe Steelworks to Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway in 1995 before being converted into a pub in 2006.

The Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk also claims to be the smallest pub in the UK and has the backing of a Guinness World Record.

The pub measures 4.57 metres by 1.5 metres. which actually makes it bigger than the signal box though.

The Dove, Hammersmith then holds the Guinness World Record for the smallest bar in Britain, measuring also 4.57 metres by 1.5 metres.

Nov. 22 (UPI) — Three teens face charges in a shooting that injured four, including two of the shooters, during a Christmas tree lighting ceremony Friday night in Concord, S.C.

The Concord Police Department has obtained a warrant for the arrest of Nasir Adhmad Bostic, 18, of Concord, on charges accusing him of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with the intent to killand inciting a riot.

Bostic was among the four who were shot and was hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday.

Keyvyonn Rayshaund Bostic, 17, was arrested and uninjured shortly after the 7:30 p.m. shooting and is being prosecuted as an adult on charges that accuse him of being an accessory after the fact and inciting a riot.

A juvenile who also was shot and is hospitalized in critical condition also has a warrant issued for his arrest on assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied property inflicting serious injury and inciting a riot.

Two 17-year-olds also were wounded and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

One remains in critical condition, while the other has been released.

Local police said the shooting allegedly was between NasirBostic and the unnamed juvenile, who knew each other and were the only ones to fire shots, ABC News reported.

Several first-responders with the Concord Police, Concord Fire Department and Cabarrus County Emergency Medical Services were attending the lighting ceremony and immediately initiated life-saving care on the four wounded youths.

But a planned appearance by Manchester United striker Matheus Cunha to turn on the Christmas lights in Altrincham has sparked injury concerns among fans.

The Brazil forward had been due to attend the event alongside Sam Aston – who plays Chesney on Coronation Street – on Saturday evening, just two days before United host Everton in the Premier League on Monday.

However, just hours before the festive extravaganza, organisers Visit Altrincham said in a Facebook post that Cunha would not be attending “due to medical reasons” as the player “had an accident in training”.

United have not yet confirmed any further details or whether this will affect Cunha’s availability for the Everton match.

BBC Sport has contacted United for comment. It is understood the appearance was not arranged through the club.

Cunha, who signed for £62.5m from Wolves in the summer, has played a key role in United’s resurgence this season – with Ruben Amorim’s side unbeaten in their past five games.

He scored his first goal for the club in a 4-2 win over Brighton in October and played in both of Brazil’s friendlies in the recent international window.

On Friday, head coach Amorim confirmed striker Benjamin Sesko would be out until the middle of next month with a knee injury.

If Cunha is not available for Monday’s game, it would force Amorim into a major reshuffle.

Mason Mount would come into contention, but Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee could also be drafted into Amorim’s starting line-up for the first time this season in the Premier League.

Rail, Maritime and Transport union [RMT] members will walk out on December 6, 13, 20 and 27 – sparking chaos for Brits.

The move is likely affect thousands of Brits who are heading home to family and relatives for Christmas and New Year.

Engineering works on the West Coast Main Line on December 27 mean some passengers would have been hoping to use CrossCountry trains as an alternative.

CrossCountry operates a nationwide network centred on Birmingham New Street, running long-distance services that link Scotland, the North East and North West, Yorkshire and the Midlands, Wales, the South West, the South Coast and the East of England – including through-services such as the Cardiff–Edinburgh “Three Nations” route.

“We are disappointed for our customers that the RMT has announced further industrial action,” Shiona Rolfe, Managing Director at CrossCountry told The Sun.

“We’ve worked hard to make a fair and reasonable offer that addresses the key points raised in this dispute, and we’ve made meaningful progress in negotiations.

“Our priority remains reaching an agreement that avoids disruption for passengers in the busy Christmas period, and we are ready to continue talks at any time.”

CrossCountry has not yet confirmed how the strike will impact services, but it is likely that most will be cancelled and they will only operate a  limited timetable at best.  

Eddie Dempsey, general secretary of the RMT – Britain’s biggest rail workers’ union – said today: “CrossCountry has not dealt with the core issues in this dispute and has come back with a proposal that is worse than what was already on the table.

“Our members are still facing unresolved staffing shortages, unfair pay outcomes and broken commitments. RMT members have been left with no choice but to take strike action.

“The company must return with a serious offer that meets the commitments it has already made and treats our members with the fairness and respect they deserve.”

The Sun Online has reached out to CrossCountry for comment.

It comes as Network Rail warned passengers to expect delays around Christmas and the New Year ahead of major £130 million works.

The disruption is set to last for a total of a month over Christmas, while crucial work is carried out.

Announcing a raft of festive network upgrades, Network Rail boss Helen Hamlin said: “The period between Christmas and New Year is the quietest on the railway and it’s the best time for us to do the major projects that will take longer than a night or a weekend to complete.

“That’s especially the case this year as we have some very big plans for improving the railway that will mean people may have to travel home on different routes after Christmas than the way they travelled out. 

“Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding and for planning ahead.”

Many of us will be heading to the airport soon, whether it’s to visit family for Christmas or to go after some winter sun, and that means terminals will be much busier than usual.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of waiting around when you visit an airport, from getting through security to passport control, but one travel specialist claims there’s a trick to help you save time. Best of all, it’s completely free.

Hadleigh Diamond, commercial director at SCS Chauffeurs, claims that if you add a fragile sticker to your checked bag, it’s likely it’ll be loaded last onto the aircraft, meaning that it’ll come out first onto the carousel at the other end.

Fragile stickers can be requested free of charge from staff at check-in and are intended for passengers carrying delicate items, such as glassware or ceramics. However, anyone can request one of these labels for their bag.

Hadleigh said: “Clients regularly tell us that the difference between a good travel day and a stressful one often starts with baggage reclaim. If you’re standing waiting for 30 minutes while the carousel clunks out someone else’s bags, your trip can feel so much longer.

“But the fragile sticker trick is a game-changer — and it often works. We’ve heard this tip from both airport ground staff and frequent flyers. You don’t need to lie or explain — just politely ask the check-in agent to add a ‘fragile’ sticker to your suitcase. It’s not guaranteed, but more often than not, your bag is among the first out. We’ve seen it work time and time again.”

While baggage handling varies at every airport, as a general rule, items marked as ‘fragile’ are placed last in the airport’s hold, as this helps prevent them from being crushed or being placed under heavier loads. So, no matter where you end up sitting on the plane, if your bag is marked as fragile, it’s more likely to be one of the first items taken out of the hold and could even be among the first to arrive at the carousel.

And this trick isn’t just for people who are impatient. If you have scheduled transfers or a tight connection, the last thing you want to do is be stuck waiting around the luggage carousel. Baggage reclaim delays can see you held up for over 40 minutes during peak times, so this trick could help you avoid the stress of a missed connection.

Recently, travellers were warned against using another luggage hack, which many people utilise to help identify their suitcase at the conveyor belt. Passengers were warned never to tie a ribbon onto their suitcase, as according to baggage handlers, any loose items can get caught in the carousel machinery, potentially delaying luggage for other airline travellers as well.

A Twilight ticket will give you access to this Festival of Light plus the Enchanted Christmas Tree Show, but you can also upgrade to a Day ticket to include the safari or book a ride on the Santa Train as an add-on.

Dunham Massey, Cheshire

Just outside Manchester lie the stunning grounds of Dunham Massey, a Grade I listed building and National Trust property.

Winter Glow, Worcestershire

Local craftspeople and lighting designers are behind the show at Winter Glow in the Worcestershire countryside.

The trail is transformed into a winter dreamland with twinkling bulbs and fairytale structures.

Northern Lights, Newcastle

Dates: November 27 – December 31, 2025

Winding along the mile-long path at Leazes Park in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is fun for all the family.

Take in its 15 different illumination zones from Lantern Lane to the Butterfly Blizzard, and even a marshmallow roasting station.

More winter warmers are available from the park’s Christmas Village, access to which is included in the ticket price.

Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

This year, the illuminated trail at Blenheim Palace promises to be “bigger, better and brighter than ever before”.

The light show has already earned a place as one of the UK’s most popular trails.

Visitors can buy a combined ticket to access both the light trail and the palace or a ticket for the illuminations only.

Allow around an hour to explore the route, with extra time factored in to meet Father Christmas along the way or to stop at the chalet-style huts for tasty food and drink.

Helmingham Hall, Suffolk

Dates: November 14 – December 19, 2025

Helmingham Hall’s gardens and parkland attract visitors all year round.

Where its flowers bloom in spring, lights glint in winter along the illuminated garden trail.

The mesmerising experience takes place after dusk, when you’ll cross a historic drawbridge and weave through shining walkways.

If that isn’t enough reason to go, grown-ups can enjoy a complimentary mulled wine with their ticket while kids can toast snacks at the firepits along the route.

And if you have a pooch, you can can bring them too.

Liverpool Cathedral, Liverpool

The Light Before Christmas comes to Liverpool Cathedral for a fourth year running, and attending the show has become a yuletide tradition in the city.

As they journey through the building, ticket-holders will find enchanting scenes ranging from the nativity to Santa’s reindeer, plus candlelit areas.

There are even bean bags to lie on to take in the acoustics of Britain’s biggest cathedral and marvel at the projections on the ceiling.

A visitor last year said: “It’s the perfect thing to get you in the mood for Christmas”, while another commented: “I come every year and it’s always beautiful.”

Kids are also big fans of the event, with one saying: “It was really Christmassy and magical.”

Hever Castle, Kent

Follow the yellow brick road to Hever Castle for a themed light extravaganza.

This year the castle will be decked out in all things Wizard of Oz.

From spotting the flying monkeys in the Christmas tree forest to arriving at the Emerald City as the castle glows bright green, it promises to be an other-worldly visit.

Hever has traditional Christmas offerings too, with log fires burning inside the beautifully decorated rooms of the castle and fairy lights glittering in the grounds.

And don’t worry – despite being in Oz and not Lapland, little ones will still be able to pay a visit Father Christmas’ grotto.

Fairground ride tickets are just £2 each and can be purchased on the day.

Stockeld Park, Yorkshire

The Enchanted Forest at Stockeld Park transforms for the Christmas season.

Light Up Trails, Hampshire

Nestled among the greenery between Winchester and Southampton you will find a dazzling light display with all the trimmings.

The trail is divided into eight zones, each one offering a different feast for the eyes.

Catch the fibre-optic flowers in the Bloom and Glow zone, golden lanterns at Step into the Magic and a laser show at The Rhythm of Light.

Halfway along the trail you can warm up at its ski-themed Christmas Village and indulge in food from bratwurst to crepes.

Ashridge House, Hertfordshire

Dates: November 27, 2025 – January 1, 2026

Ashridge House was once a royal residence of King Henry III, and its grounds are referred to to by insiders as the ‘Garden of Gardens’.

The stately home puts on a proper show at Christmas, where gentle gleaming lights meet impressive pyrotechnics and festive music.
