Drivers using key word on car insurance being charged hundreds more

DRIVERS are forking out £100s more on their car insurance by merely using a certain key word as their occupation.

Experts have revealed elderly drivers are facing substantial increases in premiums with costs rising by up to 50% in some cases – simply by marking themselves as “retired” on car insurance forms.

According to research by Quotezone, car insurance premiums are rising for elderly motorists in the UK with retired drivers listing “retired” as their occupation.

On average, this is seeing premiums jumping from £492 to £733 annually.

To combat this, Quotezone suggests variations in job titles could potentially reduce insurance costs – as long as the descriptions remain accurate and honest.

For unemployed individuals, adding a more experienced driver to the policy might help lower costs, although they caution against “fronting,” which is illegal.

DialDirect points out that premiums tend to rise for elderly drivers because insurance providers often view them as higher-risk.

They added: “Car insurance premiums can begin to rise as you become older as insurance providers typically view elderly drivers as higher-risk individuals.

“Like the way in which drivers between the age of 17 to 25 are often charged more for insurance, so are elderly drivers.

“However, the level of risk attached to different ages will vary for different insurance providers so make sure you shop around for the best deal.”

GET COVERED

Car insurance in the UK is a legal necessity, with three main levels of cover available.

These are fully comprehensive insurance, which offers the highest level of protection, covering damage to your vehicle, yourself and third party, fire and theft.

Drivers warned over common car feature that quietly causes insurance bill to spike – you’ll pay more just for having it

There’s then third party, fire and theft insurance, which covers damage you cause to others, as well as fire damage or theft of your own vehicle.

And there’s third party only insurance (TPO), which is the minimum legal requirement that covers damage caused to others but not your own vehicle.

TPO, however, won’t compensate for any damage to your own car or for your medical expenses following an accident that you’re responsible for.

This comes as an urgent DVLA warning was recently issued to drivers as a major change is set to come into force this week that could see them slapped with a £1,000 fine.

The huge change will affect laws surrounding number plates and could lead to thousands of plates becoming invalid.

Motorists using company cars should also expect to face fresh charges as part of major law changes hitting this month.

The new changes kicked in from September 1 – and includes toll hikes and fuel changes which are bound top affect thousands of Brit drivers.

Afghan-Specific Version Of M1117 Armored Car Looks Bound For Second Life In Ukraine

Ukraine looks set to receive a fleet of new-production 4×4 Mobile Strike Force Vehicle (MSFV) light armored vehicles from the United States. The MSFV is a variation of the M1117 Armored Security Vehicle (ASV) armored car that offers additional protection for its occupants from explosive blasts and other improvements, and was originally developed specifically for the now-defunct Afghan National Army (ANA).

The U.S. Army Contracting Command-Detroit Arsenal recently announced its intention to award a three-year sole-source contract to Textron for the production of 65, as well as a year’s worth of spare parts, with funding from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). Established before Russia’s all-out invasion in 2022, USAI is a security assistance mechanism intended to help acquire weapons and other equipment, along with training and other support services, on Ukraine’s behalf. The Ukrainian armed forces have already received hundreds of standard M1117s, also known as Guardians, taken from U.S. Army stocks via what is known as Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA).

Army Contracting Command-Detroit Arsenal had put out another notice in July “seeking a source capable of producing a modified M1117 Armored Security Vehicle (ASV), referred to as the Mobile Strike Force Vehicle (MSFV), which was last produced in the 2019 timeframe.” The notice had said “the United States Government (USG) anticipates ordering 65 each with plans for complete production and delivery within three years,” but did not mention Ukraine.

Textron Marine & Land Systems, formed from a merger of Cadillac Gage and Textron Marine, originally developed the M1117 in the 1990s for the U.S. Army. The ASV design is reminiscent, at least externally, of Cadillac Gage’s V-100/V-150/V-200 Commando series of armored cars, and is currently branded as part of the Commando family. The baseline M1117 has a gross weight of close to 30,000 pounds and can reach a top speed of up to 63 miles per hour. It features a turret armed with a .50 caliber M2 machine gun and a 40mm Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher.

A number of additional variants of the M1117 were subsequently developed for the U.S. Army and other customers, including the M1200 Armored Knight for use by forward observer teams and an armored personnel carrier version with a revised interior configuration capable of accommodating eight personnel in addition to the crew of three. The further improved MSFV family, again specifically developed for the ANA, was unveiled in the early 2010s.

“The MSFV platform (originally known as the Medium Armored Security Vehicle) differs from the M1117 in that it has been configured with enhanced survivability capability, giving it improved blast protection,” according to a 2014 report from the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. “The MSFV also has an extended hull design that provides increased interior space and allows for additional seating configuration.”

The ANA subsequently received three different MSFV variants, one with the same turret as the M1117, one with an open-topped turret typically armed with a single .50 caliber machine gun, and one configured as a light armored ambulance. Plans to supply the ANA with a heavier fire support version with a turret armed with a 90mm gun failed to materialize.

A US Marine Corps advisor observes ANA MSFVs in 2013. The vehicle in front has the same turret found on the M1117, while the one in the rear has the open-topped turret. USMC

A significant number of the MSFVs that were delivered fell into the hands of the Taliban when they retook control of Afghanistan in 2021.

— War Noir (@war_noir) June 9, 2024

What versions of the MSFV family Ukraine might now be in line to receive aren’t clear, but the Army Contracting Command-Detroit Arsenal’s most recent notice says “Capability of mounting the MK-19 Grenade Machine Gun and M-2 .50 caliber machine gun concurrently (fired from inside the turret), and also the M2, M240, and M249 machine guns interchangeably (fired from outside the turret)” are key requirements.

For the Ukrainian armed forces, MSFVs could offer useful additional mobile firepower in a package with at least a degree of armor protection. Even just being able to shield occupants from artillery shrapnel and small arms fire could be valuable. Light armored ambulances would also be a boon for evacuating casualties under fire.

As noted, the MSFV design also specifically incorporated survivability enhancements over the original M1117 to provide improved protection against explosive blasts, including from mines and improvised explosive devices. Mines are a particularly serious threat to both sides of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

At the same time, Ukrainian battlefields are home to a myriad of other threats, especially highly maneuverable first-person view (FPV) kamikaze drones. Pictures have previously emerged, as seen below, showing a Ukrainian M1117 covered in add-on armored screens to protect against uncrewed aerial systems. In an unmodified form, MSFV variants with open-topped turrets would have additional vulnerability to threats from above.

Though far less protected than tanks and other heavier armored vehicles, MSFVs are smaller and lighter, which could offer mobility advantages in certain contexts, as well as being simpler to operate and maintain. Textron restarting production of the MSFV family could be helpful to Ukraine just by creating an additional pipeline for more armored vehicles, as well.

It’s also interesting to note here that this isn’t the first time Ukraine has benefited indirectly from past U.S. assistance to the defunct armed forces of Afghanistan. Back in 2022, the Ukrainian military received a number of Russian-made Mi-17 Hip helicopters that American authorities had previously supplied to the Afghan Air Force.

When the MSFV contract might be finalized and when the first new-production vehicles might be delivered remains to be seen, but the Afghan-specific version of the M1117 now looks headed for a second life in Ukraine.

Rudolph Giuliani leaves hospital after being injured in a car crash in New Hampshire

Rudolph W. Giuliani has been released from the hospital and “is progressing well” after being injured when the vehicle he was riding in was struck from behind on a highway in New Hampshire, a spokesman said Tuesday.

The former New York City mayor, 81, was injured Saturday shortly after stopping “to assist a person in urgent need of help,” spokesman Ted Goodman said in a statement.

“He has since been discharged from the hospital and deeply appreciates the love, well wishes, and prayers he has received,” Goodman’s statement said. “The mayor also extends his gratitude to the New Hampshire State Police, paramedics, Elliot Hospital, and all of the physicians and nurses who provided him with outstanding care.”

Goodman was behind the wheel, with Giuliani as a passenger, when their rented Ford Bronco was struck from behind on Interstate 93 by a Honda HR-V driven by a 19-year-old woman, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement. Both vehicles hit the highway median and were “heavily damaged,” the statement said.

Goodman and the 19-year-old suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” and were taken to hospitals, the agency said.

Giuliani was taken by ambulance to a nearby trauma center for treatment of a fractured thoracic vertebra, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg, according to a statement posted on X by Michael Ragusa, Giuliani’s head of security. The thoracic vertebrae are part of the spine.

State police said the cause of the crash was under investigation. No charges were filed.

Prior to the accident, Giuliani and Goodman “were flagged down by a woman on the side of the road, just south of Exit 9N, who reported to them she had been involved in a domestic violence incident,” state police said in a news release. Goodman reported the incident to law enforcement and he and the former mayor remained at the scene until troopers arrived.

The reported domestic violence and crash were believed to be unrelated, investigators said.

“Thank you to all the people that have reached out since learning the news about my Father,” Andrew Giuliani, Rudy Giuliani’s son, wrote in a post on X. “Your prayers mean the world.”

The onetime Republican presidential candidate was dubbed “America’s mayor” in light of his leadership in New York after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.

Giuliani later became President Trump’s personal attorney and was a vocal proponent of Trump’s allegations of fraud in the 2020 election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden. Trump and his backers lost dozens of lawsuits claiming fraud, and numerous recounts, reviews and audits of the election results turned up no signs of significant wrongdoing or error.

Two former Georgia elections workers later won a $148-million defamation judgment against Giuliani. As they sought to collect the judgment, the former federal prosecutor was found in contempt of court and faced a trial this winter over the ownership of some of his assets. He ultimately struck a deal that let him keep his homes and various belongings, including prized World Series rings, in exchange for unspecified compensation and a promise to stop speaking ill of the ex-election workers.

Rudy Giuliani hospitalized after N.H. car crash

Aug. 31 (UPI) — Rudy Giuliani, a former New York City mayor and one-time lawyer to President Donald Trump, was hospitalized with a fractured vertebra following a car crash in New Hampshire, his head of security announced Sunday.

The security official, Michael Ragusa, said Giuliani’s vehicle was struck from behind Saturday evening while he was traveling on a highway.

“He was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg,” Ragusa said in a statement posted to X.

Giuliani “is in good spirits and recovering tremendously,” he added.

Car crashes into Russian consulate in Australia’s Sydney | Police News

Police say a 39-year-old man has been taken into custody over the incident in Sydney’s Woollahra suburb.

Australian police have arrested a 34-year-old man after he drove his car into the front gate of the Russian consulate in Sydney, according to police and local media.

In a statement, the New South Wales Police Force said the crash took place on Monday morning after officers responded to reports of an “unauthorised vehicle” parked in the driveway of the consulate in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra.

Officers tried to speak with the driver, but he “drove his vehicle into the gates of the property”, the statement said.

A 24-year-old constable was injured on his hand during the incident, it added.

Television footage from Sky News and Nine showed a car with a smashed window abandoned next to a Russian flagpole.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian consulate.

Rudy Giuliani injured in New Hampshire car crash, spokesperson says

Rudolph W. Giuliani is recovering from a fractured vertebra and other injuries following a car crash in New Hampshire, a spokesperson for the former New York City mayor said Sunday.

Giuliani was being driven in a rented Ford Bronco by his spokesperson Ted Goodman when their vehicle was struck from behind by a Honda HR-V driven by a 19-year-old woman late Saturday evening, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement.

Troopers witnessed the crash, which caused both vehicles to hit the highway median and left them “heavily damaged,” the State Police said. Goodman and the 19-year-old suffered “non-life-threatening injuries” and were taken to hospitals for treatment, the agency added.

The State Police said it was investigating the crash and no charges have been filed.

Giuliani, 81, was taken to a nearby trauma center and was being treated for injuries including “a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg,” according to a statement posted on X by Michael Ragusa, Giuliani’s head of security.

Giuliani “sustained injuries but is in good spirits and recovering tremendously,” Ragusa said, adding: “This was not a targeted attack.”

Before the accident, Giuliani had been “flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident” and contacted police assistance on her behalf, Ragusa said. After police arrived, Giuliani continued on his way and his vehicle was hit shortly after pulling onto the highway in a crash that was “entirely unrelated” to the domestic violence incident, Ragusa told The Associated Press in an emailed statement.

State police said troopers were investigating a domestic violence report on the southbound Interstate 93 shortly before 10 p.m. and observed the crash, which occurred on the northbound lanes. Troopers and fire personnel quickly crossed to provide help.

New Hampshire State Police declined to comment on whether Giuliani had contacted the agency regarding the account of a domestic violence incident.

Goodman did not respond to requests for comment and Giuliani’s team did not provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“Thank you to all the people that have reached out since learning the news about my Father,” Andrew Giuliani, Rudy Giuliani’s son, wrote in post on X. “Your prayers mean the world.”

The crash follows some rocky years for the onetime Republican presidential candidate, who was dubbed “America’s mayor” in light of his leadership in New York after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.

Former Trump personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani injured in car crash | Donald Trump News

The weekend crash follows some rocky years for the one-time Republican presidential candidate.

Former New York City mayor and United States President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, has been hospitalised after a car crash near Manchester, New Hampshire, a spokesman said.

Late Saturday evening, Giuliani suffered a fractured vertebra as well as other cuts, the spokesman, Michael Ragusa, said in a post on X. He said that Giuliani’s rental car was hit from behind at high speed, adding that it was not a targeted attack.

Giuliani, 81, was taken to a nearby trauma centre and was being treated for injuries including “a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg”, according to Ragusa.

Prior to the accident, Giuliani had been “flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident”, and contacted police assistance on her behalf, Ragusa said.

After the police arrived, Giuliani continued on his way, and his vehicle was hit shortly after pulling onto the highway. Ragusa told The Associated Press in an emailed statement that the car crash was “entirely unrelated” to the domestic violence incident.

Ragusa said Giuliani was “in great spirits” and expected to be released from hospital in a few days.

Brits driving in Spain urged to check if they need £6 permit before hiring car

Drivers are being urged to check whether they need to apply for a permit in order to drive abroad, especially in Spain as it can be a legal requirement for motorists

Car
It’s important to check the paperwork needed when hiring a car abroad(Image: 123ducu via Getty Images)

Hiring a holiday car can make your trip much easier and more accessible, especially if you are staying somewhere a little more remote. However it’s important to know the rules of the road in the country you’re in, and if you need permits or not.

Spain is a popular holiday spot for Brits due to its balmy weather and frequent flights that only take a few hours. But now people are being urged to check if they need permits before hiring a car according to the DVLA.

You may need an international driving permit (IDP) as well as other paperwork and passport checks for motorists heading abroad. The permit you may need depends on which country you’re visiting and how long you’re staying too. You also need to have a valid GB driving licence to get an IDP, and paper licences cannot be accepted.

IDP’s are a legal requirement in some countries(Image: monkeybusinessimages via Getty Images)

This document makes sure that you’re legally allowed to drive in countries that may not recognise or allow your UK driving licence. Make sure you’re covered for your next trip and avoid fines and legal issues by applying for an IDP before you travel.

If driving, you must always have your driving licence with you as well as your IDP, and if you are visiting Spain, you may be caught out.

While the DVLA states that in Spain “You do not need an IDP. If you’re hiring a car, you should check if the car hire company says you need an IDP.”

So while it’s not a requirement for the country, certain car hire companies may still require one for motorists. It costs £5.50 to buy and if you have a full UK driving licence – either a photocard or paper version – you can apply for an IDP at PayPoint stores.

There are three types of IDPs, each of these offer different levels of coverage for specific countries. It’s important that you choose the right one for your destination(s). The 1949 IDP is the most common, but if you’re planning to drive in countries like Italy or the USA, you may need the 1926 or 1968 versions.

IYou do not need an IDP to drive in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein if you have a photocard driving licence issued in the UK.

You might need an IDP to drive in some EU countries and Norway if you have either: a paper driving licence, a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. But it’s always advised to check with the embassy of the country you will be driving in.

Tragedy as two married couples killed after British car ‘veers off road’ and crashes in Germany

TWO married couples are dead after their British car veered off the road and smashed into trees in Germany.

The horrific accident happened shortly after midnight on Saturday near a highway in the Kassel district, north of Hesse in central Germany.

The 32-year-old male driver and three female passengers aged 30, 31 and 32 all died at the scene despite the best efforts of German emergency services.

The vehicle had a British number plate, but The Sun understands UK officials have not been contacted for assistance in relation to the crash.

The car appears to have veered off the road at around 12:30am on Saturday.

It shot into a coppice of trees around 30m from the road, according to the Kassel police department.

One of the victims’ phones sent an automatic alert to the emergency services, who sent an ambulance to the scene.

Fire engines, more ambulances and police vehicles were all dispatched when the severity of the accident became clear.

The car was on its side and wedged between two trees when crews arrived.

Emergency workers only discovered there was a car full of people when they removed the roof.

All four people were pronounced dead at the scene after being pulled from the wreckage.

Those who worked on the victims were immediately supported by the specialist mental health workers.

Moment driver ploughs into parked cars before crashing against wall & fleeing

A fire department spokesperson said: “The situation on scene was that a car was lying on its side, wedged between several trees.

“Initially, we assumed there were only two people in the wreckage.

“A crew was therefore dispatched to explore the wider area to search for any occupants who might have been ejected during the impact.

“At the same time, the vehicle was stabilized and a technical rescue using hydraulic rescue equipment was initiated.

“Shortly after the start of operations, we identified another person in the back seat.

“Once we had almost completely removed the roof, we discovered another person in the car.

“The emergency doctor checked the vital functions of the occupants, but unfortunately could only confirm that all of them were dead.”

Reflecting on the night’s horrors, the spokesperson said: “This high number of deaths is an extraordinary operation for our Reinhardshagen Volunteer Fire Department.

“For some of the emergency personnel, it is the first time they have been confronted with death in this way.

“Therefore, a great deal is being done to help us process these images.

“We will also discuss this among ourselves and within families, because not everyone can easily shake off what they have seen.”

A police investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Keyless car owners warned as gangs use Game Boy-style gadgets to steal cars – experts share 5 ways to boost security

KEYLESS cars are becoming increasingly vulnerable to theft as criminals turn to sophisticated tools like Game Boy-style emulators, experts warn.

Alarmingly, most mechanics now consider traditional car alarms ineffective as deterrents.

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) says vehicle theft in the UK has surged by 75% over the past decade, with 130,000 cars stolen annually.

This trend has sparked calls for smarter, tech-based solutions to deter car thieves.

According to Fix My Car, car owners should adopt multiple layered security strategies and modern tools to help protect their motors – including engine immobilisers and GPS trackers.

Indeed, only 5% of mechanics trust traditional car alarms as effective deterrents, although everyday precautions, such as keeping keys hidden, parking in well-lit areas and checking on vehicles regularly remain essential habits.

Matt Wrankmore, Head of Garage Network at FixMyCar, said: “Car theft is no longer just about smashing windows or hot-wiring ignitions.

“Criminals are more cyber-savvy than ever, so drivers need to respond with a balanced approach using both smart technology and visible deterrents.”

And he added: “There are definite benefits to using traditional deterrents in your car, and many manufacturers still recommend steering wheel locks despite advances in vehicle security tech.

“I believe drivers returning to these methods are on the right track but we need to use all the tools available.

“That means combining mechanical immobilisers and telematics trackers with visual deterrents like steering wheel locks and alarm stickers.

“And let’s not forget the cheapest and most overlooked measure of common sense.

Channel 4 Dispatches discovers organised criminal gangs at the heart of car thefts

“Keeping your keys hidden, parking in well-lit areas with CCTV, and checking on your car regularly are all simple habits that still go a long way.”

The rise in car thefts has also exposed vulnerabilities in high-end vehicles, such as Hyundai’s electric Ioniq 5.

A furious driver, Adam Metselaar, threatened to sue the firm last year after his £47,000 keyless car was stolen in just 31 seconds using a gadget disguised as a Nintendo Game Boy.

Despite keeping his car keys in a protective box to prevent cloning, the thieves bypassed the system using a hi-tech “emulator” hidden inside the casing of the gaming device.

The grey Ioniq 5 was traced four miles away using an Apple AirTag, but it had sustained £10,000 worth of damage.

Hyundai admitted that similar thefts have affected at least 26 cars in London, as per September last year.

They later updated their Bluelink software to introduce additional anti-theft features.

As summer holidays prompt many motorists to leave their cars unattended, FixMyCar is encouraging drivers to take proactive measures to protect their vehicles.

A combination of modern tracking devices, visible deterrents and simple precautions can go a long way in safeguarding cars from increasingly sophisticated thieves.

Five effective ways to protect your vehicle from theft

  1. Use engine immobilisers and GPS trackers
    • These tech-based solutions are highly recommended by mechanics. Engine immobilisers prevent the car from starting without the correct key, while GPS trackers help locate the vehicle quickly if stolen.
  2. Install visible deterrents
    • Devices like steering wheel locks, wheel clamps and alarm stickers act as visual signals to deter thieves, making your car a less appealing target.
  3. Adopt everyday precautions
    • Simple habits such as keeping your keys hidden, parking in well-lit areas with CCTV and ensuring your car is locked at all times are effective and inexpensive ways to reduce theft risk.
  4. Secure keyless fobs
    • Store keyless fobs in Faraday pouches or protective boxes to prevent criminals from cloning the signal. Regularly check for software updates for your car’s keyless system to enhance security.
  5. Blend traditional and modern security measures
    • Combining old-school deterrents like steering locks with advanced technology, such as telematics trackers, provides a multi-layered defence against increasingly sophisticated theft tactics.

Car owners race to buy ‘seamless’ Alexa gadget slashed from £60 to £20 – adds voice control to your vehicle

Motorists are flocking to Amazon to get their hands on a smart bit of car kit that’s seen a dramatic tumble in price.

The gadget is the second-generation Echo Auto, and it’s been picking up some proper rave reviews from blokes and lasses who have snapped it up.

Amazon Echo Auto in car.

The Echo Auto will introduce hands-free Alexa control to your car

Amazon Echo Auto (2nd gen), £19.99 (was £59.99)

Originally fetching a hefty £59.99, the nifty Echo Auto is currently on sale for just £19.99 on Amazon.

That’s a cracking deal and a perfect time for anyone looking to introduce some smart tech into their motor – and crucially, without splashing out a fortune.

This price drop is part of a wider Amazon promotion, with savings as high as 45% across the retailer’s smart devices.

It’s the best deal we’ve seen on a piece of car tech since we covered a slashed cheap CarPlay alternative on Amazon back in April (which is on sale again).

What does the Echo Auto do?

This little gizmo is designed to be your co-pilot, letting you command Alexa while you’re busy at the wheel.

  • Hands-free control: You can talk to Alexa to play music, make calls, or set reminders without ever touching your phone.
  • Navigation: Get directions from apps like Google Maps just by asking Alexa where you want to go.
  • Play music: Listen to your favourite songs and podcasts from services like Spotify or Amazon Music.
  • Smart home control: You can ask Alexa to turn on your house lights or adjust the heat while you are driving home.
  • Hear your voice: It has special microphones that can hear you clearly over car noise, like the radio or air conditioner.

The 2nd-gen Echo Auto is a small and discreet piece of kit that slots right into your car.

It hooks up to your phone and your car’s speakers to bring a whole new level of voice control to your ride.

Getting it all set up is a doddle too. You just plug it into a spare USB slot, link it to your phone’s Alexa app, and you’re sorted.

This brilliant bit of kit has an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with thousands of happy drivers raving about how it’s transformed their motors.

One buzzing punter, who slapped a 5-star rating on it, wrote: “Highly recommend this. Works in my 23-year-old Nissan Micra.

“Voice activated, can listen to a music playlist or podcasts, can make hands-free calls, listen to LBC, etc. Works brilliantly.”

Another shopper commented: “Works seamlessly… very useful as just a Bluetooth pass through to car speakers.”

Another chuffed buyer said: “Great piece of tech, [I] love Alexa at home.

“Now she comes on the road with us and, unlike my phone, she hears very well and plays whatever I want. Terrific.”

A proper ringing endorsement came from a verified customer who simply put: “This is an amazing piece of kit, highly recommend.”

Whether you want to listen to tunes, get directions, or just stay connected on the go, the Auto is a simple and cheap way to do it.

At that sale price, it’s a bit of a no-brainer.

Little-known British car brand behind motor Jeremy Clarkson said ‘can destroy your face’ to build huge new UK factory

A SMALL British carmaker behind a motor Jeremy Clarkson said could “destroy your face” is set to build a huge new factory in the UK.

Ariel – best known for its Atom motor – will build the new structure to the east of Crewkerne in Somerset on a recently acquired 43-acre site.

The carmakers gained the land after five years of negotiation, with the new building set to open before the end of 2028 at the cost of “a few million”, Ariel boss Simon Saunders said.

Simon said the cost of building a new factory had rapidly risen since the idea was first floated, meaning the firm may need to seek external funding.

Ariel currently sells two vehicles, the Atom and the Nomad, as well as the Dash bicycle, according to its website.

The Ariel Atom, tested on Top Gear in 2005, was described by Clarkson as “so quick, it can destroy your entire face“.

Since its launch in 2000, it has gone through a number of alterations, with the Ariel Atom 4 – released in 2018 – being the most recent version available to customers.

It was awarded Britain’s Best Driver’s Car by Autocar in 2020.

With building the new site, Simon said he wanted to “move to no ordinary industrial unit”, keeping in style with the unique designs of Atom’s motors.

He explained: “While we’ve been waiting to do the land deal, we’ve investigated quite a few styles – circular buildings that might work well for production efficiency, or others whose design is reminiscent of old farm buildings you already find in this area.

“We need space for what we do now, plus a museum, a showroom and a design office. And it’s got to be efficient.”

The new site will be placed close to Atom’s existing factory, meaning Ariel will be able to keep its pre-existing workforce while also adding around 60 new staff.

Motor that Jeremy Clarkson said is ‘so quick, it can destroy your face’ hits auction

It also means production capacity should be able to almost double from just 80 units per year to around 150, reports Autocar.

The huge new complex will house Ariel’s expanded manufacturing operation as well as a showroom, a spacious service and spares operation, long-term parts storage, a museum, and an office space for design and administration.

Ariel is also putting an emphasis on environmental efficiency for its new vehicles, Simon said.

The new factory will be capable of carbon capture, its roof will gather solar energy, water will come from a borehole, and there are plans to plant 8000 trees on the site.

Ariel started out in a tiny studio in Simon’s home before moving to its current site in 2007.

However, since Ariel handles advanced design as well as spares, servicing, repairs and used car sales on top of manufacturing, it has been constrained on space for years.

This comes after a 2020 Ariel Atom went to auction last year.

Describing a previous version of the car in 2005, Clarkson said he had “never, ever driven anything that accelerates so fast,” describing the Atom as being “fast on an entirely new level”.

The motor started life as a student project at Coventry University before it was originally launched in 2000.

Other iconic versions include the Ariel Atom 500, which is one of the fastest accelerating production cars ever made – taking just 2.3 seconds to get from 0-62mph.

The Ariel Atom was also voted one of Britain’s 50 best cars ever made by a panel of 10 judges earlier this year.

‘Devoted’ dad-of-two, 27, ‘crushed to death by car in freak accident while he was fixing it’

A “DEVOTED” dad-of-two was crushed to death by a car in a freak accident, an inquest heard.

Mechanic Daniel Burton, 27, was repairing his partner’s dad’s Audi A3 when an axle stand slipped.

His neighbours desperately tried to free him after he was discovered trapped under the vehicle in Port Talbot, South Wales.

Tragically, Daniel couldn’t be saved, with his cause of death given as traumatic asphyxiation – also known as “crush asphyxiation”.

An inquest heard the dad-of-two’s partner Abbie had begged him not to do work on the car himself as it was a “big job” and dark outside.

But Daniel, who was about to pass his MOT testers course, decided to do the work on the Audi himself.

He was later spotted by a passer-by lying on his back with his torso and head under the car and his legs stuck out.

The onlooker thought the car looked unsafe but decided not to say anything as she did not think the mechanic would appreciate her opinion, the court heard.

Another woman then stopped to ask Daniel if he had seen her stolen car but when he did not respond she raised the alarm.

A neighbour rushed over and tried to use a jack to lift the car before emergency crews arrived.

Daniel was sadly declared dead at the scene in January this year.

Police launched a probe and discovered a jack and one axle stand lying on its side underneath the car.

Another axle stand was still in its box, the court was told.

Coroner Colin Phillips recorded a conclusion of accidental death at the inquest in Swansea.

He said qualified mechanic Daniel was working on his car when the axle slipped due to the sloped street.

After it tipped on its side, the mechanic was trapped underneath the vehicle.

Paying his condolences to Daniel’s family, Mr Phillips added: “He was very much loved and will be sorely missed and I hope you get a degree of closure now.”

Five used-car favourites selected by a Sun Motors expert

Low-cost family favourite: KIA Venga 1.4

Silver Kia Venga parked outdoors.

8

This 5-door family-friendly KIA Venga 1.4 is for sale at a few quid under £2500. OK, so it’s a diesel and it’s nearly 10 years old, but if you’re looking for a reliable runaround, this compact MPV is a great choice.

For the budget-busting price, you’ll get a no-frills motor that’s spacious, safe, and (hopefully) reliable enough for thousands more miles.

Smooth operator – BMW 2 SERIES 220D XDRIVE

Gray BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer.

8

A bit of a step up from the KIA is the BMW 2 SERIES 220D XDRIVE. It’s a confident, capable, spacious, and safe grand tourer. OK, so this low-mileage model is diesel, but it’s Euro-6, so it’s not going to cost you a fortune in a congestion zone.

The elevated driving position is comfortable, and BMW’s reputation for reliability makes this a great family car that’s also a little fun once you’ve dropped the monsters off somewhere.

Approved & Awesome: Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI EVO Match Edition

Gray Volkswagen Golf Approved Used car.

8

The Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI EVO Match Edition is a bit of a beast. The TSI engine is smooth and super-reliable. Inside the car, the Match Trim feels like a real step-up from the standard spec.

The Volkswagen Golf 1.5 TSI EVO Match Edition is a super-hot-hatch that comes used-approved. That means it’s been checked by the experts at VW to ensure it’s ready for the road.

Europe’s most popular car: 2018 Dacia Sandero 1.0 SCe Laureate

Dark gray Dacia Sandero.

8

Would you believe that the basic Dacia Sandero is Europe’s top-selling car? Seems everyone from Scots to Swedes loves a bargain. This 2018 Dacia Sandero 1.0 SCe Laureate has fewer than 50,000 miles on the clock, which is nothing for the low-power, high-reliability powertrain.

Bodywork is up together, and it comes in Dacia’s classic gun-metal-gray. This is no-frills motoring available at £100 per month. We love it.

Superior and sporty: LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT 3.0

Gray Range Rover parked in front of a building.

8

Be honest, the Dacia isn’t going to impress anyone, but the LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT 3.0 will. Buy a used model and you’re getting a high-class motor without taking a massive hit on depreciation.

OK, so £36,000 isn’t cheap, but class costs and the Range Rover Sport have both in spades. It’s a luxury city car that’ll pull jealous looks at the school gate, but a capable off-roader too. We know you won’t want to get it dirty though.

Buying a used car? Check out Sun Motors and find your next vehicle today. Whether you’re looking for automatic, manual or electric, use Sun Motors to decide on your next model.

Sainsbury’s car park rated UK seaside town’s top tourist attraction on Tripadvisor

UK seaside towns are usually a hit with tourists for their beautiful beaches, cosy pubs and fish and chip shops, but one town has become famous for a Sainsbury’s car park

A view of the perspex tunnel in a Sainsbury's car park
The car park has a cult following (Image: SWNS)

When planning a seaside staycation, most people will look at a town’s proximity to beautiful beaches, the choice of pubs and chippies on offer, and whether there are many attractions to keep the whole family busy.

While Bude in Cornwall may be right by some gorgeous coastal walks and offer plenty of seaside charm, there’s a quirky reason why Brits are flocking to the town to snap photos.

In what is an example of British humour at its best, a Sainsbury’s car park has become the town’s top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor, with a rating of 4.7 stars.

It’s not entirely clear when it started, but UK tourists started leaving hilariously generous reviews of the Bude Tunnel, describing it as “magnificent” and “magical”, and comparing it to the likes of Lapland or London.

READ MORE: Idyllic town with great pubs and stunning gardens named best in whole of ScotlandREAD MORE: Tourists are flocking to ‘quirky’ UK village purely because of its name

It’s gained such a cult following that Tripadvisor reportedly briefly switched off comments at one point because the reviews weren’t truthfully reflecting what it actually is; a perspex tunnel, in a car park.

“A life-changing stroll through plastic grandeur – loses half a star because our epic trek lacked a soundtrack,” one jokester wrote on the review site. “Maybe it would’ve been better at night when it’s lit up.”

Another added: “Forget Harry Potter. If you want a magical experience, this is it. This is our second visit to the tunnel in as many years. You will NOT be disappointed.”

It could also turn out to be quite the romantic hotspot. One holidaymaker and their partner survived what must have been a rough time for them both as they wrote: “Doesn’t disappoint, it brought me and my partner closer together after a disagreement over Sainsbury’s opening times. Stronger than ever, thank you Bude tunnel.”

Locals have also been getting in on the joke, with one resident saying that “this South Western Wonder is a wonderful landmark which we are all sure to be proud to have in Cornwall”, quipping that they felt “so inspired and motivated” while they walked through the tunnel. Meanwhile Sainsbury’s has embraced the attention, and has even decorated the tunnel with some Christmas lights during festive seasons.

Luckily for tourists (and to be honest, locals), there’s a lot more that Bude has to offer. Other highly-rated attractions on Tripadvisor include the town’s natural sea pool, as well as some of the picturesque beaches such as Summerleaze Beach with its pirate ship model and Sandy Mouth Beach. Water sports fans won’t be disappointed either with a host of offerings from kayaking and bodyboarding to surfing. Meanwhile back on land, hikers can lace up their boots and take on a stretch of the South West Coast Path.
