I took to the slopes for the first time in the glorious Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, and was left wondering why I’d waited so long to try skiing – but one piece of advice was useless

When I excitedly told friends I was off to Austria to ski for the very first time, nearly 30 years into my life, the seasoned skiers among them looked a little nervous. “It’s definitely easier to learn when you’re younger,” they warned me.

So I immediately did what any late millennial would do, and took to TikTok in the hope of becoming a pro skier without ever having set foot on the slopes. In the weeks leading up to the trip, I spent every spare minute watching ski instructors share their tips for beginners, before practising the techniques – static – in my living room.

However, it all began to feel very real when we arrived in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in the heart of the Austrian Alps, where the Alpine Ski World Championships were held back in February

We checked in to the uber-modern Wiesergut, a ski in, ski out hotel built on the site of a 14th-century manor, which looks like something straight out of Architectural Digest.

My spacious bedroom exuded understated urban chic, with a soaring double-height ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows and a sophisticated mix of natural materials like wood, stone and linen. Luxurious Aesop toiletries lined the bathroom shelves and, to my delight, there was even a Dyson Airwrap for fixing up soggy helmet hair. The room also came with its own fireplace and a hot tub.

I couldn’t get my skiwear on fast enough but, once dressed, I took one look in the mirror and felt like an imposter. Staring back at me was the definition of “all the gear, no idea”. Luckily, there was another newbie in the group and the pair of us headed out for a lesson on the baby slopes, just a stone’s throw away from Weisergut.

I quickly discovered that my TikTok ski lessons had taught me next to nothing, but soon got to grips with finding my balance, turning and slowing down – very important in order to avoid any Paltrow-esque ski crashes.

After two hours of “pizza and French frying” our way down the baby slopes, we’d certainly worked up an appetite, and 1,500 metres up Reiterkogel mountain, Wieseralm provided the perfect location to refuel. A sister to the Weisergut, the mountain restaurant offers alpine classics such as Kaiserschmarrn, cheese dumplings and Viennese schnitzel. We were treated to a host of other decadent delights including truffle carbonara, buttery mash, fillet steak and king prawns.

Each time we thought we were done, the servers brought out another course, each as impressive as the last, and they made sure our wine glasses were never empty. Forget skiing backdown the mountain – we could have just rolled down.

Some 30km away, nestled in the beautiful Leoganger mountain range, sits Priesteregg, a five-star eco resort with its own picturesque mountain village.

Sixteen charming chalets are dotted on a steep hillside, each adorned with scarlet geraniums in the window boxes, wooden deckchairs softened with sheepskin throws, flickering candles and log fires waiting to be lit.

Smiling girls in floral dirndls welcomed me with a hot coffee before I headed to the Priesteregg BAD (spa) for wellness treatments.

I went for a swim in the Himmelbecken, an outdoor infinity pool that offers a magnificent view of the Hochkönig mountain, before taking part in a yoga class on the terrace over looking it. The yoga instructor then took us through an incredible guided breathing session using the Wim Hof method in preparation for a cold plunge at the Naturbecken pool.

To my surprise, I enjoyed every second of the dip, and barely noticed the cold even as I climbed out into the rain. I don’t know if this was the effect of the breathwork, or if the breathtaking scenery simply offered the perfect distraction from the discomfort.

I’ve never slept more soundly than I did in my bedroom at the chalet. Situated on a high plateau facing the mountains, the chalets offer stunning views, including a glimpse of the nearby luminescent man-made glacial lake.

It’s hard to imagine a more indulgent start to the day than the Priesteregg breakfast, served in your chalet. You wake to the soft sounds of quiet preparation, and when you step into the living space, it has all been laid out – candles lit, coffee brewing and the table laden with platters of local ham and cheese, fresh fruit, yoghurt and still-warm breads and pastries. All that’s left for you to do is cook the eggs and bacon, if you fancy it.

The nearby town of Leogang is worth exploring, including Mama Thresl – Priesteregg’s cooler, more casual sister hotel – which provides easy access to the gondola for those wanting to ski or snowboard. But given Priesteregg’s panoramic mountain views, one-of-a-kind wellness area, incredible on-site cuisine and warm Austrian hospitality, it’s a wonder anyone would leave.

THE world’s most powerful storm this year is due to hit Jamaica today, with winds up to 175mph.

Hurricane Melissa, which has been upgraded to category five (the highest strength level), is heading to a Caribbean destination, with three people confirmed dead so far.

As a result of the hurricane, Jamaica is experiencing flash flooding, with landslides and a rapid four metre increase in the sea level also expected.

All airports on the island have been closed and thousands of residents have been left without power.

So here is everything you need to know if you have plans to travel to the island.

Is it safe to travel to Jamaica?

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) currently has a warning about Hurricane Melissa on its website, stating that it is expecting to make landfall today.

However, it has not warned against non-essential travel.

It adds that the Jamaican government has already closed its international airports until further notice and that travellers should monitor updates from local authorities.

The FCDO states: “Please continue to monitor local and international weather updates, including from the Meteorological Service for Jamaica and the US National Hurricane Centre, and follow the guidance of local authorities, especially in the event of any evacuation orders.

“The Jamaican Government has published a list of available hurricane shelters in advance of anticipated landfall.”

The FCDO also has two helplines that British nationals stuck in Jamaica can use to get consular assistance – +1 (876) 936 0700 (option two) and +44 (0)20 7008 5000.

According to Travel Gossip, a spokesperson for Sandals, which has multiple Sandals and Beaches resorts in Jamaica, said: “With more than four decades of experience operating in Jamaica and across the Caribbean, the resorts are well prepared for weather-related events.

“Each property follows detailed, time-tested protocols led by trained teams who are equipped to respond calmly and effectively as conditions evolve.

“Guests can be assured that every measure is being taken to ensure their safety and comfort, and that the resort’s dedicated team members – many of whom call Jamaica home – remain committed to providing care, communication and the warm hospitality for which Sandals and Beaches Resorts are known.”

Have flights to Jamaica been affected?

As all international airports have been closed on the island, all flights have currently been cancelled.

Kingston Airport said: “Passengers, contact your airline for rebooking.

“DO NOT go to the airport.”

Sangster International Airport has then said: “When we reopen, confirm flight status with your airline BEFORE travelling.”

Virgin Atlantic has cancelled today’s flight between London Heathrow and Montego Bay flight and the return journey too.

A spokesperson from the airline said: “Due to adverse weather conditions expected to be caused by Hurricane Melissa, some of our Jamaican flights are subject to cancellations and delays.

“The safety and welfare of our customers and crew is our top priority, and we are contacting any Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Atlantic Holiday customers who may be impacted by the hurricane to discuss their options.”

British Airways has also postponed the London Gatwick to Kingston flight, which was due to depart today.

A TUI spokesperson said: “We are closely monitoring the situation in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa moves across the Caribbean.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority.

“Our teams are working around the clock to support everyone impacted and we are in direct contact with all customers whose travel plans may be affected.

“We understand this is an unsettling time and ask that customers currently in Jamaica continue to follow the advice of local authorities and their resort teams.”

Can I cancel my holiday?

Currently, the FCDO has not issued advice against non-essential travel to Jamaica.

This means if your holiday has been cancelled by your holiday provider or your airline, then you are legally entitled to a full refund.

Your provider should contact you directly if they are cancelling your trip, but you can also call them to confirm.

However, if you cancel your holiday or flight, companies have no obligation to refund you and you also will not be able to make a claim on your travel insurance, unless the government advice changes.

If you do have travel insurance, check your policy as it may include natural disaster cover.

A look at your rights if a flight is delayed or cancelled, when your entitled to compensation and if your travel insurance can cover the costs.

What are my rights if my flight is cancelled or delayed?

Under UK law, airlines have to provide compensation if your flight arrives at its destination more than three hours late.

If you’re flying to or from the UK, your airline must let you choose a refund or an alternative flight.

You will be able to get your money back for the part of your ticket that you haven’t used yet.

So if you booked a return flight and the outbound leg is cancelled, you can get the full cost of the return ticket refunded.

But if travelling is essential, then your airline has to find you an alternative flight. This could even be with another airline.

When am I not entitled to compensation?

The airline doesn’t have to give you a refund if the flight was cancelled due to reasons beyond their control, such as extreme weather.

Disruptions caused by things like extreme weather, airport or air traffic control employee strikes or other ‘extraordinary circumstances’ are not eligible for compensation.

Some airlines may stretch the definition of “extraordinary circumstances” but you can challenge them through the aviation regulator the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Will my insurance cover me if my flight is cancelled?

If you can’t claim compensation directly through the airline, your travel insurance may refund you.

Policies vary so you should check the small print, but a delay of eight to 12 hours will normally mean you qualify for some money from your insurer.

Remember to get written confirmation of your delay from the airport as your insurer will need proof.

If your flight is cancelled entirely, you’re unlikely to be covered by your insurance.

Quantum computing stocks have risen dramatically over the past few weeks.

Quantum computing stocks have been on an absolute tear recently as their companies announced major contract wins. But that was all topped off by JPMorgan Chase‘s announcement this week that it’s investing $10 billion into strategic tech companies. That includes quantum computing businesses. But for quantum computing stocks to rise around 20% (some more, some less) following that news is troublesome.

No specific investment was announced in any of these companies, and other massive industries were listed in the release — such as supply chain and advanced manufacturing, defense and aerospace, energy technology, and frontier and strategic technologies (where quantum computing was lumped in). This raises concerns about the short-term nature of the quantum computing market. The combined rise of all quantum computing stocks was more than the overall $10 billion investment announced by JPMorgan Chase, so there’s clearly not enough to go around.

Observers have begun to speculate that there may be a quantum computing bubble forming. So is now the time to sell? I think Warren Buffett has some great advice for investors on what they should do.

Warren Buffett is the legendary CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, a position he has held since he took control of the company in 1965. Over the years, Buffett has given investors several great pieces of wisdom, and I think one quote is applicable right now. He wrote that his goal was to “attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.”

There are clearly many signs of greed in the quantum computing market. As mentioned above, many of the quantum computing stocks rose by a massive amount in response to a nonspecific announcement that JPMorgan Chase would invest in emerging technologies.

Furthermore, we’re still years away from quantum computing viability. Most competitors point toward 2030 as the likely turning point in quantum computing’s commercial relevance, and that’s still five years away. Five years ago, we were in the beginning stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and nobody (outside of a handful of companies) had ever heard the term generative AI. It’s impossible to know what will happen in the field over the next five years, or which companies will be the winners.

Most of the investment dollars flowing into the quantum computing space have centered around the pure plays. Still, there are also legacy tech players, like Alphabet, Microsoft, and IBM, which have nearly unlimited resources compared to pure plays like IonQ (IONQ -3.92%) or Rigetti Computing (RGTI -3.01%). It’s still an uphill battle for IonQ and Rigetti, and just because the big tech players aren’t saying anything doesn’t mean they aren’t experiencing success.

Companies like IonQ and Rigetti Computing are still years away from profits, and have to rely on government contracts and stock issuance to continue to fund their operations. As a result, they must issue a news release on any piece of positive news they can to let investors know about their successes. The big tech companies like Alphabet, IBM, and Microsoft can afford to stay silent about any breakthroughs, as they’re internally funding their research.

The big tech players may be far more advanced than the pure plays, even if nobody outside of those companies knows it yet. I think this could be setting up some of the pure-play stocks for failure, and their shareholders should take action.

Taking some profits in an increasingly frothy industry is a smart move

Another Warren Buffett quote is applicable in this situation, too: “The first rule in investment is ‘Don’t lose.’ And the second rule in investment is ‘Don’t forget the first rule.'” Investors have already made a significant amount of money on the quantum computing trade, and while it’s possible these stocks could continue rising, a crash may be around the corner.

If you’ve invested in these stocks at any time this year, it may be time to at least trim some of them, as it’s unlikely that they’ll continue rising forever. By taking some profits now, you can be well positioned to deploy them back into the industry if it returns to earth.

Nobody ever lost money by selling a stock at a profit, although they have lost out on even larger returns. Still, I think the risk is greater than the reward, and it may be a wise time to take some profits off the table.

And he suggested that keeping schtum worked for him — as he went on to score 29 international goals and played in three World Cups and one European Championship as part of the ‘golden generation’.

He said: “I just got on with it. You’re a professional, you get on with it — you are playing different ways, you respect the manager and you crack on. You can have your own opinions — but I tended to keep mine to myself and think about what could I do best if I was asked to play.

“The truth is, I never really played for England much like I played for Chelsea.

“There were times, like in 2004, when Sven-Goran Eriksson was there when I played at the top of a diamond — that wasn’t my ideal, either — but if you are representing your country and the manager’s got an idea, you just go with it.

“That was my story and it’s been documented and people talk about it many years later with a different view to how it felt at the time,

“They just sort of say, ‘It did work or it didn’t work’. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didn’t. But I’m not interested in that conversation.

There are only so many places in Tuchel’s starting XI — and Lampard added: “Now I’m a manager, I understand selection difficulties.

“I’ve had big squads at Chelsea. When I was first there, I went back and they had the 29 players — of which some were disgruntled — that’s another story.

“But in terms of trying to fit players in, you have to make tough decisions as a manager — you have  ideas, you have to work with the squad you’ve got and think, ‘What is the best?’ So that’s why I never really comment on what decisions other managers take because I don’t know the context, what they’re thinking and who and how they want to play.

“However, I do think it’s more common in the modern day for a conversation to be more open between player and manager.

“It goes manager by manager – some don’t want to talk and say, “This is the team, I’m the boss, you get on with it.’

“There are those who will have individual conversations, and then other people will open up to the group. That all depends on who’s in charge. And players react differently.

“I think there’s a balance to it. I think the players have to feel your authority and believe in what you’re doing.

“It’s not always an open conversation. Our job is to get that bit right. And our job is to be like that.

“But as a manager also, you want to have constant communication in that players feel that they can speak to you because you might find something that you didn’t know.

‘A DIFFERENT ANIMAL’

“England’s a bit of a different animal because you only turn up every now and again.

“At Chelsea, sometimes you’re playing at the weekend and through the week, and you’re training every day and the conversations are there throughout the year much more.” One chat with a great former Chelsea manager sticks in Lampard’s mind.

He added: “I remember once having a conversation with  Carlo Ancelotti about my position at Chelsea when he played a diamond formation.

“It didn’t feel really fluid, not just for me, but for the team.

“That was one of the beauties of Carlo, he would be very open with that chat and I’m not saying he changed his mind, but he was taking on information and then adapting around it.

“That’s why he’s one of the greatest managers, that’s his style — I think those things should be authentic.

“If you want to do your thing and you stick to your guns, you may  succeed or you may fail, that’s what you do. That’s one person’s approach.

“I am more open with my players to try to speak to them, because I want to get better. So every conversation I have with a player may help me, whether I agree with it or not.”

“In the end, the decision is mine — and then hopefully it works.”

All victims of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal who are claiming compensation will now be entitled to free legal advice to help them with their offers, the government has announced.

The change could potentially have a major effect on the size of the payouts some victims are able to achieve.

It is one of a number of improvements to the compensation schemes available to victims, made in response to the first report from the public inquiry into the scandal, widely described as one of the UK’s worst ever miscarriages of justice.

In July, the chair of the inquiry, Sir Wyn Williams, delivered his findings into the human impact of the scandal and called for urgent action.

The government said it has accepted all but one of the recommendations relating specifically to Horizon.

More than 900 sub-postmasters were prosecuted after the faulty Horizon computer system made it look like money was missing from their branch accounts.

Hundreds of others poured their own savings into their branch to make up apparent shortfalls in order to avoid prosecution.

Making the announcement, Business Secretary Peter Kyle said there was “clearly more to do to bring justice to those affected” and accepting the recommendations was a “crucial step” towards doing this.

There are now three compensation schemes for victims in various circumstances, but they have been criticised for being too slow and complicated with many of the worst affected victims receiving offers for far less than they’d originally claimed for.

Victims who have sought compensation through the Horizon Shortfall Scheme (HSS) – which accounts for more than half of the compensation claims paid out so far – are now eligible for government-funded legal advice to help them decide whether to accept a fixed sum offer, in changes announced by the government on Thursday.

This brings it in line with the other schemes.

The government has also committed to setting up a new appeals process for postmasters who accepted a fixed payout under the HSS scheme, which also includes funded legal advice.

Many victims have previously complained about being forced to accept low offers of compensation, without the benefit of legal help.

Action taken in response to other recommendations included:

• the government extending the date for the closure of the HSS scheme
• giving greater clarity on the definition of “full and fair redress”
• starting work on a restorative justice project for postmasters

So far, more than £1.2bn has been paid out to more than 9,000 claimants across all of the compensation schemes.

The Post Office said it had been working closely with the Government to respond to the inquiry’s report and had agreed a deadline of the end of January 2026 for accepting new applications to the Horizon Shortfall Scheme, saying it would give potential applicants more time to consider their case.

“I encourage any current or former postmaster who thinks they might be eligible for the Horizon Shortfall Scheme to get in touch ahead of the closure date. We have a dedicated claimant support team available on the phone to discuss your options, provide support, and answer any questions so we can begin to process your claim right away,” said Post Office Chair, Nigel Railton.

Reacting, a spokesperson for Fujitsu – who provided the Horizon IT system – said the company had “apologised for, and deeply regret, our role in sub-postmasters’ suffering”.

‘Battling all the time’

Tony Downey bought the Hawkshead Post Office in the Lake District in 2001.

He and his wife Caroline were forced to put in £35,000 of their own savings to make up for “losses” created by the faulty software.

He lost his home, his livelihood and went bankrupt as a result. His health has also suffered.

Mr Downey is still waiting for full compensation nearly three years after submitting his claim.

“It just seems to be battling, all the time, to get a little bit more, and a little bit more, and a little bit more,” he said. “We’re just exhausted with it.”

Responding to Mr Downey’s testimony, a government spokesperson said: “While we do not comment on individual cases, we take every effort to make full and fair offers to all claimants and only request information that will enable us to do so.”

Neil Hudgell of Hudgell Solicitors, which represents hundreds of victims, said it is “proper that applicants are entitled to have their cases fully assessed before electing to accept a fixed sum”.

He said there would likely be “an upturn in numbers” seeking compensation as deadlines for applying are set.

“There are clearly going to be a lot more claims in the system,” he said.

Mr Hudgell added that claims were still being processed slowly, and said that unless more resources were invested to speed up claims handling, “we will still be needing to talk about compensation claims in three to five years’ time.”

The late September dip erased more than $4 billion in value. It’s no big deal.

Investors who bought shares of Oklo (OKLO 12.73%) before its stock surged 50% in mid-September were probably thrilled when share prices of the nuclear reactor start-up hit $142 on Sept. 23.

They — along with anyone who jumped in on Sept. 23 — probably weren’t feeling quite so festive at the end of that week. The company’s shares crashed below $111 on Sept. 26. They’ve risen a bit since then, but it’s fair to ask whether the company’s stock price slump is here to stay.

Here’s why investors shouldn’t worry about the recent slump, even if the stock continues to be volatile.

It’s a hard-knock life

Startups often experience big swings in share price, and Oklo is one of the “start-uppiest” start-ups you’ll find in the nuclear energy space.

Founded in 2013 by two MIT graduate students, Oklo went public via a merger with one of artificial intelligence (AI) guru Sam Altman’s special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) in May 2024. It has big plans for a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR), but it hasn’t actually built even a working prototype of one, let alone made money from one. So it’s a very speculative stock, and not a good choice for risk-averse investors.

Given all the question marks surrounding Oklo’s potential as an investment, it’s unsurprising that the stock has seen some big swings in valuation, including the recent dip.

Betting on the tech

In addition to being a start-up operating in a relatively new and untested technology sector, Oklo’s proposed SMR differs from the “standard” SMR design.

Oklo is building a sodium-cooled “fast reactor” SMR, which is a niche type of reactor, even for the SMR space. Full-size fast reactors have been shown to be more efficient than the traditional water-cooled reactors used in most nuclear plants, and Oklo believes that these benefits could carry over to the SMR versions. In theory, they could be powered using spent fuel from existing reactors instead of fresh enriched uranium fuel, which would be an added benefit.

But none of this has yet been borne out under real-world conditions. Until it is, expect more volatility.

Small news, big impact

One reason these factors are likely to cause such wild swings in Oklo’s stock is that there’s not a lot to go on as far as company valuation. It’s too early for traditional valuation metrics like price-to-sales or price-to-earnings ratios. There’s not a lot the company can report about operational progress yet. That means minor news reports and rumors are all investors have to go on in many cases. As speculators pile in and out of the stock based on these tidbits of information, the share price swings wildly.

Take, for example, the news that Oklo held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first-ever Aurora Powerhouse SMR in mid-September. News reports about that groundbreaking caused the stock to abruptly skyrocket. But the groundbreaking was hardly a secret: The company had been saying for months it was expected to occur in the third quarter of 2025 (which it did). It had completed site characterization in May and selected a builder in July. The project is part of a government program with a proposed end date of July 2026. Anyone could have predicted that a groundbreaking was imminent. But news that it happened sent the stock soaring:

Similarly, the drop in share price since the groundbreaking is likely caused by investors taking profits after a massive stock run-up. The important thing to remember is that there seems to be plenty of upside for Oklo’s stock from here, if it can actually deliver on its technology. If you’re a risk-tolerant investor looking for a nuclear energy stock that could soar, it may be a good time to consider buying the dip.
