Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Turkish nationalistssuccessfully fought for independence and removed allied forces by mid-1923. To resolve the leadership gap left by this conflict, the Grand National Assembly officially established Türkiye as a republic on October 29, 1923, and appointed Mustafa Kemal as its inaugural president. Over the following years, the nation adopted a republican constitution and transitioned into a secular state when references to the state religion were removed from the legal framework in 1928. Kemal later received the honorific title Atatürk, meaning ‘Father of the Turks,’ in 1934. Today, Republic Day serves as a vital national holiday where Turkish citizens celebrate their shared unity and collective heritage.
