The Sports Report: – Los Angeles Times

From Jack Harris: It was a night of redemption at Dodger Stadium.

For the struggling home team, its recently beleaguered closer and its enigmatic third baseman most of all.

In a 6-5 win against the New York Mets on Tuesday, Max Muncy atoned for a costly fifth-inning error with a two-home run performance, including a game-tying blast in the bottom of the ninth.

Left-hander Tanner Scott snapped out of his recent funk, throwing a scoreless 10th inning a night after taking a loss in the same situation.

And after two consecutive frustrating defeats, the Dodgers finally bounced back on Freddie Freeman’s walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th; earning a win that kept them in sole possession of first place in the National League West, and chased a few demons for both Scott and Muncy in the process.

“We needed every bit of it,” manager Dave Roberts said. “It’s good to see the resilience from a lot of our guys.”

ANGELS

Automatic runner Zach Neto scored on Taylor Ward’s bases-loaded double-play groundout to lift the Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings on Tuesday night.

Nolan Schanuel had two RBIs and Neto added two hits and an RBI to give the Angels consecutive wins for the first time since capping an eight-game win streak on May 23.

Kenley Jansen (1-2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the win a night after getting a save and Reid Detmers got his first save.

RAMS

From Gary Klein: Puka Nacua is using organized team activities to hone his craft and prepare for his third NFL season.

But the Rams’ star receiver also recently took time to help others prepare to avoid potential health challenges.

Nacua last week returned from a trip to Samoa, where he and his mother joined medical professionals from Utah Valley University to provide testing, clinics and education about diabetes.

Nacua said his father, who died when Nacua was a youngster, experienced complications from the disease.

So the opportunity to travel with his mother to his maternal grandmother’s village was “kind of a full-circle moment” for his family, Nacua said Tuesday.

“To be able to go and improve the situation in the homeland was something sweet,” Nacua said after the team went through a workout.

ANGEL CITY

From Kevin Baxter: It doesn’t seem that long ago that Christen Press was helping the national team to consecutive World Cup titles. She was unstoppable then, a key cog in the greatest women’s soccer team in history.

Yet she played her 155th and final match for the U.S. in the Tokyo Olympics.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Press, just 18 days removed from those Olympics, became the first player signed by expansion club Angel City. She was bringing the NWSL to her hometown and was being rewarded with what was then the richest contract in league history.

Yet she’s started just 10 games since then, losing most of the last three seasons to a stubborn anterior cruciate ligament injury that took four surgeries to repair.

Press eventually will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, but she isn’t ready for that trip just yet. If her body isn’t always willing, her mind and her heart are still keen on the sport, so Press makes her most valuable contributions now in the quiet of the locker room.

L.A. PARALYMPICS

From Thuc Nhi Nguyen: Already slated to be the first venue in the world to host events from three different Olympic Summer Games, the Coliseum will help break new ground for the Paralympics in 2028.

The iconic stadium is at the center of the first Paralympic Games in L.A. as it hosts the para track and field competition, LA28 announced Tuesday in an updated venue plan that placed 23 disciplines into their future Paralympic homes.

“This is a momentous occasion for the city of Los Angeles,” para swimmer and Inglewood native Jamal Hill said in an interview with The Times. “Being a native Los Angeleno, you always hear about this melting pot of Los Angeles and many times, that melting pot, the default is to really thinking like, ethnic or racial or even cultural based. … I think it’s really, really beautiful and inclusive now that that melting pot is really starting to cover ability.”

2019 — San Francisco Giant Manager Bruce Bochy wins his 1,000th game as the manager of the Giants with a 9-3 victory over the New York Mets.

2022 — The rule preventing position players from pitching in a close game is invoked for the first time when Crew chief C.B. Bucknor objects to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts calling on OF Zach McKinstry to pitch the 9th inning against the Mets with his team trailing, 9-4. The rule, adopted before the 2020 season but not implemented until this year due to the upheavals caused by the coronavirus pandemic, states that a team cannot use a position player on the mound unless there is a difference of six or more runs between the two teams. Roberts is thus forced to use a real pitcher, Evan Phillips, to pitch the final inning.

3 unexploded WWII bombs in Cologne force evacuation of 20,500 people

A Cologne public order officer cordons off access to the Rhine River promenade on Wednesday after three unexploded bombs from the Second World War were found at the Deutzer Werft, forcing a large area of the center of the city to be evacuated. Photo by Christopher Neundorf/EPA-EFE

June 4 (UPI) — More than 20,000 people in Germany were evacuated as authorities worked Wednesday to defuse three huge unexploded bombs from World War II at a construction site in the center of the city.

A major incident was declared due to the danger from the bombs — two 2,200 lb devices and one of 1,100 lbs — with police making checks door-to-door in the Old Town and Deutz areas of Cologne after 20,500 people were ordered to leave and businesses, tourist attractions and stations were shuttered, the city said in a news release.

The 1,100-yard-wide exclusion zone covers the city’s UNESCO-listed 13th-century cathedral, 58 hotels, parts of the subway system, at least nine schools, day care centers, two retirement homes, a hospital, as well as city hall and many other sites.

“The evacuation is the largest measure since the end of the Second World War. Everyone involved hopes that the defusing can be completed in the course of Wednesday,” city authorities said.

“This is only possible if all those affected leave their homes or workplaces early and stay outside the evacuation area from the outset on that day. We ask you to be cooperative and follow our instructions so that the evacuation and defusing can proceed quickly and without danger.”

Officials told Sky News the measures could remain in force for some time if the effort to defuse the devices was unsuccessful and it became necessary to detonate them, as that would require a major operation to contain the blast.

All three bombs are American-made, but likely dropped by the Royal Air Force, which dropped around 1.5 million bombs in raids on Cologne between 1940 and 1945, some of them with as many as 1,000 aircraft, launched from bases in eastern England.

However, as many as 300,000 of the bombs did not explode, according to experts, causing frequent scares when they turn up during construction projects or in dredging of the River Rhine, which runs through the heart of the city.

Last year alone, more than 30 were discovered, forcing 17 evacuations affecting 36,000 people. The bombs were among around 2,000 that are found across Germany each year, according to the Smithsonian Magazine.

In 2021, four people were injured in Munich when a World War II bomb exploded during construction work near the main train station and more than 65,000 people were evacuated in Frankfurt in 2017 after a “Blockbuster” 1.4-ton British bomb was found near Goethe University. That device was safely defused.

German bombs are frequently discovered in Britain, which was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe between 1940 and 1941 and in 1944, most recently last year when 10,000 people were evacuated after a large bomb was found in the yard of a suburban property in Plymouth.

Naval and army bomb disposal officers extracted the device and took it out to sea, where it was detonated.

DR Congo Govt Denies Shutting Down Banks in Areas Controlled by M23 Rebels

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has denied responsibility for the closure of banks and financial institutions in areas controlled by M23 rebels, citing security concerns for individuals with savings accounts in those areas.

Before the Rwanda-backed rebels took control of Goma in North Kivu and Bukavu in South Kivu, banks and other financial institutions in those regions had ceased operations.

The rebels’ reopening of the Caisse Generale d’Epagne du Congo (CADECO) has not produced the expected results but aggravated the situation, especially as CADECO branches only pay taxes to the rebel authorities.

There have been ongoing calls for the authorities in the DR Congo to reopen banks to alleviate the financial hardships faced by the population. In response, government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya explained that the banks are not closed due to the government’s decision but rather due to security concerns affecting individuals with savings accounts.

Muyaya expressed concerns during a press briefing, stating that ongoing tensions in Kivu have led to punitive measures against its populations due to the banking sector’s dysfunction. “Let them not lie to you. These people do not have the right to utilise the American dollar in any way,” he said,  emphasising the legal ramifications of engaging with movements under U.S. sanctions.

He clarified the situation by explaining that “the banks are not closed because the government wants it, but because of how the system functions and the security conditions,” indicating that the closures are a complex issue tied to broader systemic and security problems. The government’s spokesperson says he hopes for expeditious peace initiatives to alleviate the suffering endured by the Congolese communities affected by rebel control, which he attributed to support from Rwanda.

“The President of the Republic and all of us in government are working to push all the processes going on, and this situation, the butchers in Goma, must quickly stop. I recall the necessity for all of us always to express the sentiment of support and solidarity to affected populations,” he added.

However, Joseph Kabila, a former president of the DR Congo, criticised the government for neglecting the people, particularly by disconnecting local financial institutions from the national banking network, and restricting the movement of people and goods.

Calling for the humanisation of the living conditions in this part of the country, the former president exhorted the authorities to protect the population and insisted that “the army, justice and other structures in charge of security and order must in reality be in the service of the population and respond to their aspirations”.

The Bishops of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo also expressed their disquiet at the persistence of the multifaceted crisis affecting the DR Congo. In a statement made public on Friday, May 16, the religious leaders deplored the degradation of the political climate and the deterioration of the socio-economic situation, especially in the zones under the control of the M23/AFC rebels supported by Rwanda.

For bishops, the closure of banks and airports in the territories under the control of the M23/AFC rebels imposes precarious and challenging living conditions on several families.

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has disclaimed responsibility for the closures of banks in regions controlled by M23 rebels, attributing them to security concerns.

Prior to the rebels’ takeover, financial institutions in Goma and Bukavu had already halted operations. The rebels reopened CADECO, worsening the situation as taxes are only paid to the rebel authorities. Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya emphasized that banks closed due to security conditions, not government directives, and stressed the legal issues with using currency under U.S. sanctions.

Former President Joseph Kabila criticized the government for neglecting the people by severing local financial institutions from the national network. He urged the protection of affected populations, calling on security forces to prioritize public welfare. The National Episcopal Conference of Congo’s Bishops expressed concern about the ongoing crisis, highlighting the deteriorated socio-economic conditions in areas under rebel control, worsened by bank and airport closures, impacting residents’ living conditions.

The government aims for swift peace initiatives to mitigate these hardships.

‘Chaos’ at another Spanish island airport as bins overflow and major queues form

Tourists have taken to social media to express their anger and disgust at the conditions passengers are facing on either arriving or leaving the holiday airport

Holidaymakers have criticised the “absolute chaos” at Majorca’s airport, amid warnings that the situation could worsen as the peak summer season approaches.

Frustrated travellers are venting their fury on social media over the conditions they’ve encountered upon arrival or departure from the popular holiday destination’s airport. Complaints are mounting about extensive queues, bins brimming with rubbish, disruptive construction work, and lengthy detours requiring up to 20-minute walks due to ongoing “improvements” that began in 2022.

Tourists argue that Palma airport’s state tarnishes the Spanish island’s image and could deter people from choosing Majorca for their holidays. This wave of criticism follows recent reports of Tenerife airport’s overcrowding, where passengers endured long waits in “inhumane” conditions.

Majorca now finds itself under similar scrutiny, with a flurry of videos posted online illustrating the airport’s congestion and inadequate facilities. The Spanish newspaper Diario de Majorca reports that what was meant to be a warm welcome for thousands has turned into a source of complaints and mockery, as many visitors, particularly tourists, share footage of their chaotic experiences.

One user juxtaposed the serenity of a Majorcan cove against the airport’s pandemonium, highlighting overflowing bins and litter-strewn floors amidst the construction zones. The lack of order and ongoing construction work at the airport has left passengers frustrated.

“Maybe I know it’s because it’s under remodelling hahaha, but there were many things that didn’t work,” one traveller penned. Another shared a video taken on a typical Tuesday afternoon, captioning it: “This is Majorca’s airport on any given Tuesday… and it’s chaos.”

The footage reveals a main corridor packed with passengers, leaving little room for normal circulation. A third disgruntled passenger posted: “You have to walk half a marathon through the airport. It’s an aberration.”

This isn’t the first time Son Sant Joan airport has been the butt of viral jokes. The meme account @mem.es. meme recently shared a video that has racked up over 70,000 views, poking fun at the lengthy walks passengers have to carry out to exit the terminal.

Diario de Majorca has reported that some improvement have been made. “Although in recent weeks more direct accesses and better signage have been put in place as part of the remodelling works started in 2022, the memory of labyrinthine corridors, poorly indicated temporary detours and routes of up to 20 minutes on foot is still very much alive,” the publication wrote.

“The high season has barely begun, and with it, the criticism of facilities that, according to many users, are not yet ready to withstand the influx of travellers expected in the coming months.”

Palma airport is currently undergoing a major transformation set to be completed in 2026 with a significant investment.

Recent milestones include the unveiling of the new security filters last November, now situated on the second floor, as part of a 550 million euro investment. Another significant development is the new connecting walkway between the main building and module D, which will enable boarding to be accessed through the centre of the building rather than the end, thus reducing walking distances.

This infrastructure will have two different directions. While the entrance is already operational, the exit access isn’t anticipated until the summer of 2025.

One Shot: The carousel in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2, Episode 6

Cinematographer Kim Ji-yong admits that a “happy accident” furnished one of the most alluring images of “Squid Game” Season 2: an overhead shot in which contestants stand on a merry-go-round while playing a devious game where they must form groups of a specific number before time runs out or be eliminated. “We planned the shot and pre-lit the scene from eye level, but when we actually went to put the camera up there, that was the first time we saw it,” he says. The elevated perspective was framed more than 100 meters above the contestants, with Kim wanting the image to “look flat” and “not as realistic.” The result is a surreal portrait that mimics the shape of an eyeball, a metaphorical reminder of the control room watching the contestants’ every move. During gameplay, an immersive camera, often handheld, makes the audience feel like a participant. Adding to the mystique is a painterly palette of primary colors. “For the whole season, I wanted to place red and blue lights, the colors coming from the X and O, in the dorm room,” Kim says. “When they play merry-go-round, the moment they pick who to go with, the light changes to red and blue. It symbolizes choice.”

Do you use a towel to reserve a sun lounger? Take our poll and have your say

Sunbed wars are heating up at hotels everywhere – as holidaymakers race to reserve loungers with nothing but a towel. But is it a clever strategy – or just plain rude?

Man by a reserved towel at the pool
What do you think to popping a towel down to reserve a sun lounger? Picture posed by model.

It’s the classic holiday debate: whether or not to reserve a sun lounger with a towel. We’ve all seen it – or maybe even done it ourselves. It’s early morning, the sun’s barely up, and there’s already a row of chairs by the pool completely ‘claimed’ with a towel or anything else a forward-thinking holidaymaker can think of.

But the people are nowhere to be seen. And we want to know if you think it’s ok to claim your spot in such a way. Scroll down to take our poll.

Some say it’s just part of holiday life – the ‘you snooze you lose’ mentality. While others argue it’s deeply inconsiderate. After all, if you’re not actually using the lounger, should you really be blocking someone else from enjoying it?

Hotels and resorts are starting to take notice, too. Some have gone so far as to implement “towel patrols” that remove items from unused beds after a certain time. But still, the great sunbed stand-off continues. Do you use a towel to reserve a sun lounger? Take our poll below. If you can’t see it, click here

The age-old issue has reared its head again after a holidaying couple defended putting towels on their sunbeds while nipping for breakfast – sparking a furious reaction online.

Rachel McGuigan and her husband David stayed at The Residence Hotel in the resort of Fethiye, west of Antalya in Turkey. But the holidaymakers divided opinion after she placed towels on their poolside beds for half an hour while they visited the resort’s restaurant. One angry holidaymaker, Harry Crumb, said: “I just remove them, if full. I don’t care and the hotel doesn’t care.”

Another added: “Just throw the towels in the pool. It’s not allowed to do this in most hotels and resorts.” But another person leapt to their defence, saying: “I don’t understand. I thought it was normal to get up, grab your towels, pop them on your bed then go for breakfast.”

“I just thought it was crazy that people were so upset about leaving a towel for half an hour to go for breakfast,” Rachel told What’s The Jam. “They accused me of being selfish and all sorts.”

Rachel then posted about it on her ‘Holidays & Hangovers’ TikTok page. She then decided to stoke the fires further by posting a joke about leaving one of her towels on a lounger at 5.30am to go on a series of fake excursions that lasted until bedtime.

The punchline was that they never got to spend a minute on the sunbeds they reserved at dawn.

In the footage, she shared a screenshot of an angry user’s message that read: “Really annoys me that people put towels on sunbeds then go away somewhere? Why? Everyone wants to enjoy their holiday.”

Rachel captioned her clip: “Fine, you’ve all caught me out, this is how our day really looked…”

However, many furious Brits took the joke literally and flooded her comments section for a second time. One riled tourist said: “So you reserved the beds and didn’t use them but wouldn’t let anyone else use them? Have you ever thought that you may be the problem?”

Another raged: “You go on holiday for a rest but end up getting up early like you do at home just to put towels out. Hotels are not for me, that’s why I Airbnb, not having a go, just saying.”

“The most council estate thing ever!” said a third, while Craig remarked: “Some people ain’t getting the joke, love it!”

After ruffling a few feathers, Rachel explained: “After the first time, I thought it would be funny to play up to it.

“It was a joke and I didn’t expect anyone to take it seriously, but I ended up opening a can of worms about sunbed reservations!”

She added: “There wasn’t a lack of sunbeds so putting our towels down before going for breakfast wasn’t an issue for anyone. I was surprised with everyone commenting about it.”

Rachel admitted it can be “annoying” when some tourists leave their towels on sunbeds “for hours on end”. But she doesn’t see it as a problem if it’s “only for half an hour and someone stays with them”.

8 best cooling pillows for hot sleepers 2025 UK, tried and tested

SUMMER is just around the corner, and those scorching nights are about to make decent kip feel like mission impossible.

For hot sleepers, the battle against night sweats and overheating is a year-round struggle – but when temperatures soar, finding the best cooling pillow becomes absolutely essential.

Whether you’re naturally hot-blooded, going through menopause, or dealing with medical conditions that trigger night sweats, a cooling pillow could be your ticket to uninterrupted slumber.

Unlike standard pillows that trap heat against your head and neck, cooling pillows are clever little sleep savers engineered specifically to keep you comfortable all night long.

The secret lies in their innovative materials and design. Traditional pillows often use dense materials that absorb and hold heat – exactly what you don’t want during a heatwave!

Cooling pillows, however, work their magic in several different ways.

Some feature thermoregulating natural fabrics like bamboo, silk or wool that actively wick moisture away from your skin.

Others incorporate high-tech foam with open-cell structures that allow air to circulate freely around your head.

The most advanced options even use special gel layers or phase-changing materials that literally draw heat away from your body.

According to The Sleep Charity, the ideal bedroom temperature for quality sleep is between 16°C-18°C.

When your bedroom thermometer creeps above 24°C, you’re far more likely to wake up during the night – leaving you groggy and irritable the next day.

While a cooling pillow isn’t the only solution (a lightweight duvet, a home fan, and strategic window opening all help), it’s one of the simplest ways to dramatically improve your sleep during hot weather.

Ready to chill out and sleep better this summer? We’ve put the UK’s top cooling pillows through their paces to bring you our definitive ranking of the very best options for every type of sleeper.

How we tested cooling pillows

Each cooling pillow was tested over several weeks in our reviewers’ homes.

They considered several factors when rating the products, including the fabric, how cool it was and the shape of each pillow.

Each reviewer also considered the thermoregulating properties and any special features it had, such as open-cell memory foam, spring layers, adjustable height and cooling technology.

Our testers also evaluated whether the pillows were soft to the touch, comfortable, supportive and something our reviewers actually liked sleeping on.

Best overall: The Simba Hybrid

The Simba Hybrid Pillow, £109

Pros: Customisable height, temperature-regulating, breathable, soft

Cons: Pricey

Rating: 5/5

The Simba Hybrid pillow has been cleverly designed to regulate your temperature and increase airflow.

It incorporates astronaut-inspired temperature regulation, which absorbs, stores and releases heat as and when you need it, which means that — even on a hot summer’s night — it’ll absorb the heat and keep you cool.

With over 14,000 five-star reviews, we decided to put one to the test and see what all the fuss was about.

As someone who usually opts to buy budget £5 pillows, I was taken aback by the price, but once my head hit the pillow, I couldn’t believe the difference in comfort.

The pillow is filled with breathable and lightweight nanocubes, which can be removed to adjust the height and firmness of your pillow.

Once I tweaked the height to suit my needs, it was glorious to sleep on. The material is thick, plush and supportive, and I swiftly found myself among the army of Simba pillow lovers.

Whilst this is one of the more expensive pillows in our round-up, the consensus of those who have tried it is that it’s worth every penny.

Eve Sleep The Memory Foam Pillow Hybrid Front and Back Sleeper, £70

Pros: Honeycomb memory foam top layer ensures coolness, supportive, anti-allergy hollowfibre

Cons: Price

Rating: 4/5

The Eve Memory Foam Hybrid pillow is constructed in three parts: there’s a memory foam centre that relieves pressure on your neck and head, a hollow fibre layer that gives extra support and an outer layer of breathable memory foam.

This final layer is honeycombed, allowing air to pass through it so you don’t overheat and your head stays cool.

I tested this pillow for a week and really noticed the difference from my old cheap pillows. This one is more supportive as it keeps your spine in alignment, which helps prevent aches in your neck and back.

It also kept me cool, and I didn’t feel too hot while I was sleeping on this pillow, which I think is due to the fact it has a breathable cotton cover and mesh borders, as well as the air holes in the memory foam that worked their cooling magic.

The cover is removable, and you can wash it in the machine, which is handy.

Eve also offers a 30-night trial, which is a great idea if you’re unsure about buying, as you can return the pillow if it’s not to your liking.

Material: Memory foam middle layer, hollow fibre mid layer and honeycomb memory foam top layer, encased in a cotton cover, Support: Medium

Best firm pillow: Simba Hybrid Firm Pillow

White pillows on a bed with string lights on the headboard.
The Simba Hybrid Firm (right) is noticeably big in comparison to standard pillows

Simba Hybrid Firm Pillow, £159

Pros: Breathable, temperature-regulating, supportive, adjustable height

Cons: Expensive, might be too big for some pillowcases, firmness may not be to everyone’s taste

Rating: 4.5/5

Simba seems to be storming ahead of its competitors when it comes to cooling technology.

The sleep company is known and loved for its Simba Hybrid Firm pillow (and many other products), and I tested it out during a heatwave.

The Hybrid Firm is comprised of three individual pillows (two soft fibre pillows and one layer of firm Aerocoil springs), which can be combined and rearranged to adjust the height and firmness of the pillow.

It also features Stratos tech (the astronaut-inspired temperature regulation we mentioned earlier), which means it’s as good as a pillow can be at regulating your body temperature.

While it took me a few days to get used to the firmness of the pillow, its superior cooling properties and adjustability make it the most comfortable pillow I’ve ever slept on.

Undeniably, the price of the pillow is pretty high, but if you’re able to afford it, we believe it will be a worthwhile investment.

Material: Cotton, mesh, Aero coil, Support: Firm to medium-firm (adjustable)

Best budget: Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow

White pillow with black panda-like design on a bed.
The material draws moisture away from the skin

Panda Memory Foam Bamboo Pillow, £44.95

Pros: Luxurious, improved the quality of my sleep, next-level comfort

Cons: Genuinely couldn’t find one!

Rating: 4/5

The Panda Hybrid Pillow is designed with sleep tech to regulate your body temperature while in the land of nod, and it is incredibly comfortable.

The Orthopaedic grade design is made from a bamboo charcoal-infused memory foam, and whether I am sleeping on my back, side or front, this pillow provides ample support.

The bamboo fabric is highly breathable, promoting airflow to keep your body at the optimum temperature and drawing moisture away from the skin, keeping you dry and comfortable.

It has made a considerable difference to the quality of my sleep, and I genuinely wake each morning feeling ready to start the day, having had good quality rest.

Best for night sweats: Emma Premium Foam Pillow

Hand pressing a white pillow.
You can customise the layers to suit your preference

Emma Premium Foam Pillow, £75 £63.75

Pros: Removable and washable moisture-resistant cover, layers can be removed and changed to suit you

Cons: Expensive!

Rating: 4.5/5

The Emma Premium Foam Pillow certainly lives up to its premium name.

Its temperature-regulating design means it is filled with removable layers and stays fresh and clean.

The removable layers include a foam layer that regulates temperature, which means you can adjust the pillow to suit how you sleep.

This is great for women struggling with menopausal or general hormonal night sweats as the design is customisable and easy to remove and replace.

I like that the knitted white fabric of the pillow is breathable, as there’s nothing worse than a hot, sweaty sleep.

I won’t lie; I did love this pillow, but because of the memory foam, you may find this pillow a little harder than others. I also think it’s expensive at full price.

Material: ThermoSync foam, HRX Foam, polyester and 2% elastane; Support: Medium (but fully adjustable layers)

Best for side sleepers: Simba Cooling Body Pillow

A great option if you prefer to sleep on your sideCredit: Lucy Gornall

Simba Cooling Body Pillow, £109

Pros: Good for pregnancy and nursing, washable cover

Cons: High price point, takes up a lot of space on the bed

Rating: 4/5

This body pillow is designed to provide extra support if you sleep on your side, as it keeps your spine and hips in alignment. It’s also fab if you’re pregnant, as it supports your bump while taking pressure off your hips.

I found it really soft – thanks to the Simba Renew Bio fibres inside – and cool. It is made with Stratos cool-touch technology, which stops you from getting too hot, and I could definitely feel that coolness.

The cover is removable, and it’s machine washable, which is always a good thing.

The body pillow is incredibly comfy, as well as supportive, and it’s ideal as a back pillow for sitting and reading in bed.

The only issue you’re going to have is finding somewhere to store it when you’re not using it.

Material: 100% cotton cover incorporating Stratos cooling technology with down-like Simba Renew Bio fibre interior; Support: soft but supportive

Simba Stratos Pillow

Best-cooling-pillows

Simba Stratos Pillow, £60

Pros: Supportive, cooling technology, hypoallergenic

Cons: None

Rating: 4/5

The Simba Stratos is filled with recycled fibres from plastic bottles – Simba Renew Bio – which is breathable, so reducing heat as you sleep and avoiding sweating.

Simba’s Stratos technology on one side of the pillow keeps the fabric cool to the touch.

It reacts to your body temperature and dissipates heat, ensuring you feel cool and comfortable. The sustainable cotton cover is washable, which is another plus point.

I loved that this pillow arrived in a strong bag, which is useful for storage should I ever need to pack it away.

Material: Sustainable cotton cover; Simba Renew Bio interior (made from recycled plastic bottles); Support: Soft but supportive

Woolroom Organic Washable Wool Baby/Travel Pillow

Best-cooling-pillows

Woolroom Organic Washable Wool Baby/Travel Pillow, £71.24 (was £94.99)

Pros: Organic fabric and filling, cooling in summer, very comfortable, machine washable, great size

Cons: Price

Rating: 3.5/5

Wool is a great material for regulating your temperature, so this pillow is a must for hot summer nights.

It’s a travel pillow, so great for you or the kids when you’re heading off on holiday, though I must admit I use it more at home.

It’s also lovely and soft for sleeping on – I’m not a fan of hard pillows and sleep much better on a squishy (or medium-squishy) version.

This one is made from 100% organic British wool and has a 100% organic cotton outer cover.

Because of the wool’s hypoallergenic qualities, it’s endorsed by Allergy UK and house-dust mite resistant.

Sustainability is important to me, so I love that the wool is traceable back to the farms from which it was sourced, and the sheep that supply it are kept in high welfare conditions.

The pillow is also certified by the Soil Association and meets the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). It even comes with its own zipped carry bag for storage.

Material: 100% organic British wool inner with 100% organic cotton cover; Support: soft

Where to buy cooling pillows

Looking for the perfect cooling pillow to beat the summer heat? Here’s where to grab them:

Most retailers offer free delivery when you spend over a certain amount, so why not pair your new cooling pillow with matching sheets for the ultimate summer sleep upgrade?

How do cooling pillows work?

Cooling pillows are used mainly in the warmer summer months to prevent heat retention and provide a cool surface when sleeping.

The design of the pillow increases airflow, so keeping you cooler, while fabrics are breathable and often include natural fibres, such as bamboo, silk or wool.

Some pillows may contain water or gel pouches that absorb heat from the skin, cooling you down and wicking away moisture.

As they absorb your body heat, they warm up, so they need to be cooled again – either by not sleeping on them or turning them over.

You can always pop the gel pack into the fridge for a few hours before bed so it cools ready for use.

What are the main differences between a cooling pillow and a regular pillow?

Regular pillows use dense, standard fillings that trap heat against your head like a furnace, leaving you tossing and turning in a sweaty mess.

Cooling pillows, however, are engineering marvels that actively regulate temperature.

They feature thermoregulating natural fabrics like bamboo, silk or wool that wick moisture away, while innovative open-cell foam structures allow continuous airflow around your head.

The most advanced versions contain phase-changing materials or gel layers that literally pull heat away from your body throughout the night.

Do you need a pillowcase for a cooling pillow?

Your cooling pillow absolutely needs a pillowcase for protection and hygiene, but standard synthetic covers will trap heat and completely undermine its temperature-regulating technology.

Natural fabrics are essential for maintaining maximum coolness.

Bamboo offers exceptional breathability and feels instantly cool against your skin, while silk provides unmatched temperature regulation along with impressive beauty benefits for hair and skin.

Cotton and linen are decent options too – just avoid polyester blends at all costs.

Do cooling pillowcases really work?

Fans of cooling pillowcases swear they really do work.

Silk is usually the fabric of choice. It is thermoregulating and also wicks away moisture, but its added skin and hair benefits seal the deal.

Hair is less frizzy because the super smooth fabric reduces friction as you move around in bed, and your skin is less creased in the morning, in theory, leading to fewer wrinkles.

Bamboo is another good option as it regulates temperature and feels cool to the touch, especially when you first lay your head on the pillow.

Natural fibres generally will be cooler than synthetic fabrics, which hold in heat.

What is the best cooling pillow in the UK?

Many cooling pillows could take the title of best, depending on what you’re looking for.

The Simba Hybrid is an incredibly popular choice and has more than 27,000 five-star reviews on Simba’s website.

If you need more support, especially for your neck, then the Simba Hybrid Firm is another great option with over a thousand five-star reviews online.

What fabric, high-tech features and firmness to go for depends on the individual and the budget.

Generally speaking, when looking for the best cooling pillow available, go for natural fibre covers, such as silk, bamboo and wool, as they draw heat away from the body.

As for the filling, again, that’s a personal choice – natural materials are cooling, but so is the recycled polyester used in many man-made bestsellers, and it’s a lot cheaper than feathers and down.

How do I keep a pillow cold at night?

Cooling pillows come in different designs that work in different ways to ensure you get the best night’s sleep.

Their effectiveness depends on their features and how you use them.

Pillows with gel or water inserts only keep you cool for a certain amount of time – your body heat transfers to them as they cool you, and eventually, they’re no longer cold.

They need re-cooling (either by not using them or refrigerating the gel pack) before you can sleep on them again.

Technical fabrics, such as the ones used in the Simba Stratos pillow design, work by absorbing body heat, while the nanocubes inside allow for greater airflow.

Again, though, you may find even the high-tech material becomes warm after a few hours.

Buy pillowcases made from natural fibres such as cotton, linen, bamboo, wool and silk, as these are cooler to sleep on.

Once your pillow becomes too warm, simply turning it over will give you a whole new layer of coolness.

Do cooling pillows help with night sweats?

Anything that feels cool on your face or body is going to help with night sweats, but it’s a question of degree.

The cover and filling in a cooling pillow are designed to draw heat away from your body so you don’t wake up feeling all hot and bothered.

As a result, your sleep isn’t disturbed, and you’re more rested in the morning.

However, if you suffer from frequent and intense night sweats due to menopause, you may need to take extra steps to keep cool.

These could include using only natural-fibre bedding, sleeping under just a sheet, buying a cooling mattress or running a fan in the bedroom.

Buying a gel pad that you can pop in the fridge and then put in your pillowcase with your pillow could also help ease night sweats.

What is the best cooling pillow for side sleepers?

Side sleepers should look for a supportive cooling pillow with a higher loft (thickness).

This is because lying on your side can mean your body is not aligned, causing pain in your shoulders, neck, knees and hips.

Memory foam is a good choice as it moulds to your body, supporting you as you sleep; however, it does absorb heat.

Instead, you can opt for a pillow with open-cell foam layers that allow air to circulate, improving breathability and coolness.

Side sleepers may also want to consider adding a second pillow – between their knees – to help keep their spine, neck and hips in alignment.

The Simba Cooling Body Pillow is great for this, and our reviewer found it “incredibly comfy, as well as supportive”.

Trump says China’s Xi ‘hard to make a deal with’ amid trade dispute | Donald Trump News

Growing strains in US-China relations over implementation of agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions.

United States President Donald Trump has said his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, is tough and “extremely hard to make a deal with”, days after he accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions.

“I like President Xi of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social online platform on Wednesday, amid growing tensions between the two nations over their tariff truce.

On Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had said Trump would speak with Xi to iron out differences on last month’s tariff agreement, among larger trade issues.

In May, American and Chinese negotiators had struck a deal in Geneva that lowered US tariffs on goods from China from 145 percent to 30 percent. In exchange, China dropped its tariffs on US goods from 125 percent to 10 percent.

Analysts had described the agreement as unexpected, pointing out that the two sides had been so widely apart on their tariff dispute. Still, the deal was seen as a welcome development averting a bigger showdown that unnerved the global market.

But on Monday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said the US has “severely violated” the deal, adding that it would take steps to defend its interests.

US violations included the halting sales of computer chip design software to Chinese companies, the blocking of usage of Chinese-made chips from the tech giant Huawei, as well as the cancellation of visas for Chinese students, the Commerce Ministry said.

The ministry also said US actions severely violate an agreement reached in January during an earlier phone call between Xi and Trump.

Trump had also ranted on social media last week, accusing Beijing of “totally” violating the agreement with the US.

He did not specify which provisions in the May tariffs deal were violated. But US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer was later quoted in media reports as saying Beijing had failed to remove non-tariff barriers levied against the US, as agreed under the deal.

Last week, a US trade court ruled that Trump overstepped his authority in imposing the bulk of his tariffs on imports from China and other countries under an emergency powers act.

Less than 24 hours later, a federal appeals court reinstated it, saying it was considering the government’s appeal.

‘People call me selfish for reserving sunbed on holiday but I got last laugh’

A British tourist who reserved sunbeds on holiday before heading off for breakfast has hit out at critics who call her ‘selfish’, as she claims there’s nothing wrong with it

The debate over whether it’s socially acceptable to put your towel down on a sunbed before you’re ready to use it has been ongoing for years. Every summer, videos are shared on social media of tourists racing down to their hotel swimming pool to dump towels and bags on sunbeds at the crack of dawn.

Many of these holidaymakers then leave the pool to go back to bed, have breakfast, or even do some sightseeing, but staking their claim on a sunbed means no one else can use it. However, one British tourist has defended this practice, insisting it’s not “selfish” to reserve a spot by the pool.

Rachel McGuigan and her husband, David, were on holiday in Turkey when they decided to put towels down on a couple of poolside beds to reserve them while they went off and had breakfast in their hotel.

The woman, from York, posted a video of her holiday on TikTok and was baffled by the backlash she got for showing herself reserving the sunbeds.

One person had commented on her video: “Just throw the towels in the pool. It’s not allowed to do this in most hotels and resorts.” And another had written: “I just remove them if they’re full. I don’t care, and the hotel doesn’t care.”

Rachel, who was holidaying at a resort in Fethiye, west of Antalya, said: “I just thought it was crazy that people were so upset about leaving a towel for half an hour to go for breakfast. They accused me of being selfish and all sorts.”

To try to make light of the situation, Rachel then uploaded a second video that appeared to show her leaving towels on a sunbed at 5.30am before going on a series of excursions that lasted until bedtime.

The video was a joke, and Rachel didn’t really reserve a sunbed all day without using it. However, it highlighted exactly how divisive this topic is, as her comments were flooded with people who believed she really had kept others from using the beds.

One person wrote: “So you reserved the beds and didn’t use them, but wouldn’t let anyone else use them? Have you ever thought that you may be the problem?”

Another added: “You go on holiday for a rest, but end up getting up early like you do at home, just to put towels out. Hotels are not for me, that’s why I Airbnb. Not having a go, just saying.”

However, Rachel has insisted that people are taking her videos too literally. She said the resort wasn’t full when they visited, so they were never taking sunbeds from other people who wanted them.

She said: “After the first time, I thought it would be funny to play up to it. It was a joke and I didn’t expect anyone to take it seriously, but I ended up opening a can of worms about sunbed reservations!

“We went to The Residence in Fethiye for two weeks in May for the second year running. There wasn’t a lack of sunbeds, so putting our towels down before going for breakfast wasn’t an issue for anyone. I was surprised with everyone commenting about it.”

The woman also admitted that it can be “annoying” when some tourists leave their towels on sunbeds for “hours on end”. However, she noted she doesn’t think it’s a problem when it’s “only for half an hour”.

‘I’m a Brit living in Benidorm and tourists should avoid these three areas’

A British man living in Benidorm has shared a viral TikTok video, explaining the three areas of the Spanish resort that tourists should avoid at all costs this summer

A British expat living in Benidorm has issued a warning to holidaymakers, urging them to steer clear of three specific areas when visiting the sun-soaked Spanish resort this summer.

Harry Poulton, who regularly offers travel advice and insights about the popular destination to his 40,000 TikTok followers, recently shared a video that has racked up 29,000 views and hundreds of likes. In it, he reveals the top three most perilous spots in the party city, cautioning tourists to give them a wide berth.

The 24-year-old begins by warning against what he calls the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ – a little public pathway that leads all the way up to the Rio Park.

“Now, it has been known for a few things, mainly small thefts like pickpocketing,” Harry warns. While he assures viewers that it’s generally safe during daylight hours, he advises against traversing it after dark.

Are you a Benidorm expert? We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a line at [email protected]

“I have stayed at the Rio Park several times in the past. I would NOT recommend walking up the Yellow Brick Road late at night. Get a taxi. It’s not that expensive. Better to be safe than sorry,” a visitor to the area wrote on Tripadvisor.

Next on his list is Pueblo Alley, located behind the Hotel Pueblo. The Brighton-born content creator strongly advises against venturing into this area, especially late at night, due to the presence of pickpockets and occasional sex workers. He suggests finding alternative routes instead.

Topping Harry’s list of places to avoid is the infamously named Mugger’s Alley. He warns: “It is the most notorious – it’s the one we all know. It’s crazy. Save yourself the hassle and cross the road.”

Known for its high incidence of pickpocketing and sex work, Harry strongly advises visitors to avoid this area altogether. The alley is located at the start of the strip opposite the Hotel Flash and runs behind the white ‘SATE’ building, near Morgan Tavern.

“It’s safe enough in the day but late at night you’ll likely get approached by ‘hugger muggers’ (individuals who’ll invade your space pretending to know you whilst swiping your valuables), prostitutes and robbers,” writes Michelle Baker, who runs the Benidorm Forever Facebook page.

“Men on their own are the main target so stay together and walk in FRONT of the SATE building, not behind it. Remember, MOST crimes in Benidorm are non-violent, it’s your phone and cash they’re after, so keep both out of sight and if you do get robbed, you need to visit the SATE office (opposite the hotel Flash) in office hours to make a police report.”

Often groups of women will approach men walking by themselves before attempting to give them a hug.

A Brit who has lived in Benidorm for decades told The Spanish Eye: “This has been going on for a long time, it’s outside the Magic Villa de Benidorm and right next to the local tourist police station, which is closed in the evening.”

Angels get by Red Sox in extra innings

Automatic runner Zach Neto scored on Taylor Ward’s bases-loaded double-play groundout to lift the Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings on Tuesday night.

Nolan Schanuel had two RBIs and Neto added two hits and an RBI to give the Angels consecutive wins for the first time since capping an eight-game win streak on May 23.

Kenley Jansen (1-2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the win a night after getting a save and Reid Detmers got his first save.

Schanuel led off the 10th with a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled by reliever Zack Kelly (1-2), allowing Neto to advance to third. Mike Trout then walked to load the bases.

Kelly went 3-0 to Ward before he grounded into the double play. But it allowed Neto to score to put the Angels in front.

Ceddanne Rafaela had two RBIs for Boston. Jarren Duran also had an RBI.

Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi pitched five innings plus three batters, giving up three runs and eight hits with five walks. He also struck out five, including his 900th major league strikeout.

Secret Service agents arrest man who scaled wall at Mar-a-Lago

June 4 (UPI) — A 23-year-old Texas man has been arrested by U.S. Secret Service agents after jumping the wall at President Donald Trump‘s Florida Mar-a-Lago estate, according to reports.

Anthony Thomas Reyes had entered the property early Tuesday and told law enforcement that he was there to “spread the gospel” to the president and marry his teenage granddaughter, Kai Madison Trump, Florida Today reported, citing a Palm Beach Police arrest report.

A Secret Service spokesperson told CBS News in a statement that the suspect had “scaled a perimeter fence and triggered alarms” shortly after midnight Tuesday.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, the spokesperson said.

Jail records state Reyes has been charged with a misdemeanor trespassing offense and is being held at Palm Beach County Jail on a $50,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty later Tuesday during his first appearance in court.

Trump was in Washington at the time of the incident.

The police report also states that Reyes was arrested and accused of trespassing at Mar-a-Lago on New Year’s Eve.

In April, 58-year-old Adrienne Tajirian was arrested on a misdemeanor trespassing charge for allegedly trying to enter Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club to have dinner with the president.

And in January, Bijan Arceo was arrested on the same charge after allegedly jumping over the outer wall at Mar-a-Lago.

A security zone was erected around Trump’s estate following an assassination attempt on Trump’s life during a campaign rally in July.

Kai Madison Trump is the 18-year-old daughter of the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

‘I bought a £129 Wowcher mystery holiday – and destination couldn’t be worse’

Cara was hoping to get a break in New York, but it won’t take her quite as long to get to her holiday ‘resort’

A student was left gutted after buying a Wowcher mystery holiday and discovering she’s paid to go to Edinburgh – the city where she lives. Cara Piper splashed out £129 on it and had high hopes for a weekend away in New York.

The 23-year-old opened an email from Wowcher and discovered the trip was to Edinburgh, the city where she’s lived for the past four years. “I saw the Wowcher master holiday on social media and impulsively decided to do it for a cheap holiday,” said Cara.

“I was honestly happy with anywhere as long as it wasn’t the UK. I opened it in Edinburgh because that’s where I’ve been living for the past four years.”

Cara, originally of Derry, Northern Ireland, filmed herself revealing where she was going to jet off to. In the clip, Cara shouts “no” as she discovers that she’s paid to go to the city where she goes to Queen Margaret University and studies education.

She said: “Me and Ethan decided last night to book a Wowcher mystery holiday. It’s £129 each if we want to go during the summer months. We want to go in July I think and we’re redeeming it right now.

“The only problem is, we have to travel from Belfast. We’re limited on where we can go. We don’t think it’s going to be New York or anything like that. We’re happy with anywhere. I’m nervous.”

Cara is on the phone with a friend as she anxiously opens the email from Wowcher. She said: “No, no, no, no. We got Edinburgh. I’m in Edinburgh right now. We did not just pay £130 each to go where I go to uni for the past four years.

“For f*cks sake. We can ring up and change, I think. I literally live here. I actually can’t believe that.

Stephen is continuing on as solo presenter – but fans haven’t seen the last of HollyCredit: ITV

Last year, she and Stephen Mulhern co-hosted the revived version of You Bet!

Although the show is coming back for a second series, Holly will not be returning as co-host.

You Bet! viewers will see the star again nonetheless – as she’s appearing as a guest panelist this time around.

Renamed You Bet! On Tour, Stephen will take over solo hosting duties for the second outing.

Also confirmed for guest appearances are Rob Beckett, Josh Widdicombe, Zoe Ball, Rylan Clark and Babatunde Aleshe.

Each instalment of the seven-episode series – including a Christmas special – will take place a different location across the country.

Once again, the celebrity panel must decide whether or not challengers will complete their task.

Last month, Stephen opened up about continuing on as host without Holly.

Chatting to TV Biz, he said: “I’m gutted she’s not doing You Bet! with me, but I’ve had time to think about it and Bruce Forsyth was the first person to do You Bet! and he did it on his own.

“Matthew Kelly made it the best show on the telly.

You Bet fans complain as iconic show fronted by Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern returns with missing feature

“And every time I’ve been interviewed and they say, ‘What show would you bring back?’, I’ve always said ‘You Bet!’.

“So maybe it happened for a reason. We’ve filmed one episode already without Holly, and it felt very comfortable. Maybe it is just a one-presenter show.

“I don’t know what happened. She just said, ‘Look, sorry, I can’t do it’. She told me face to face. She said, ‘Look, I’m gutted but it’s all over’.”

The pair’s other show, Dancing on Ice was shelved earlier this year with no plans for a new series, as revealed by The Sun.

Stephen Mulhern’s career so far

The presenter is a mainstay on various ITV shows, but how did he become one of Britain’s most well-known faces?

Stephen first gained an interest in magic and tricks from his father who taught him as a kid.

After performing at Butlins, he became the youngest member of the Magic Circle and even made an appearance on Blue Peter in a piece about Harry Houdini.

His career started in Children’s TV when he presenter the show Finger Tips in 2001.

After four years, he launched Tricky TV on CITV in 2005, which he presented until 2010.

During this time, he was handpicked by bosses to front the ITV2 spin-off for Britain’s Got Talent.

He presented Britain’s Got More Talent until the cancelation of the companion in 2019.

But it’s not all bad news for Stephen who is known for his duties on a number of quiz shows.

In for a Penny, a format originally launched on Ant & Dec‘s Saturday Night Takeaway was launched the same year.

Before, he was chosen by bosses to host Catchphrase in 2013 and has been fronting the show ever since.

Other huge shows he presented for ITV included Big Star’s Little Star, Rolling In It and the reboot of Deal Or No Deal.

He also made regular appearances on This Morning in ‘The Hub’ segment between 2011 and 2014.

After the Philip Schofield scandal rocked ITV, he was chosen to reunite with his former CITV co-star Holly Willoughby as the host of Dancing on Ice.

It came as Coronation Street‘s Sam Aston – aka Chesney Brown – won the latest outing.

An ITV Spokesperson said: “Following another successful series earlier this year, Dancing On Ice will be rested in 2026 with no current plans for another series.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the cast and crew who have worked on the show since 2006, and over the previous 17 series, for all of their hard work both on and off the ice.”

You Bet! airs on ITV1 and ITVX.

Chaos on popular Canary Island beach as tourists banned from swimming in the sea

The water off the shore of Playa Dorada in the resort town of Playa Blanca was judged to be too contaminated for people to swim, with officials forbidding people from entering the water

A beach in Lanzarote has been closed to swimmers over fears they could fall ill.

Official carried out tests on the water quality off the shore of Playa Dorada in the resort town of Playa Blanca. They discovered that the water had microbiological contamination, leading the public health body to make a health alert and shut the beach on Tuesday.

Water samples taken on Monday showed signs of pollution, prompting Yaiza Town Council to impose a temporary ban on bathing, Canarian Weekly reported. Further investigations will now be carried out in a bid to work out the cause of the contamination.

La Voz reported that the contaminant was Escherichia coli, also known as E. coli, and streptococcus bacteria. E. coli bacteria are most commonly present in the intestines of animals and humans, while streptococcus can cause various infections in humans.

Yaiza recommends residents and tourists enjoy other beaches, such as those located in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, known as Papagayo Beach; Playa Flamingo; or even the small beach in Playa Blanca.

The beach will only reopen once tests confirm the water is safe for swimming.

The rats
Dead rats were seen bobbing around in the sea(Image: SOLARPIX.COM)

Playa Dorada is far from the only beach in Spain that has had issues with water contamination in recent weeks.

Last month, sunseekers were left horrified when dozens of dead rats ended up floating in the sea. Following a heavy downpour, the bloated rodents began to bob off a beach in Spain’s Costa Blanca. The overburdened local sewage system has been blamed for the disgusting scenes facing beachgoers near Alicante’s Coco and Urbanova beaches.

Rats were pictured lying dead on the sand at Urbanova beach, three miles south of Alicante City Centre. Others were filmed floating lifeless in the water. Dead rats were also spotted near the sailing school at Alicante’s Real Club de Regatas.

The ugly scenes provoked the anger of an opposition councillor for the popular holiday resort, who worries that mixing tourists and dead rats is not a good idea. Trini Amoros, deputy spokesperson for Alicante City Council’s socialist group, said: “Alicante cannot allow rats floating off our beaches.”

A week later, the sea off a popular Costa del Sol holiday resort turned an alarming brown colour, leaving tourists aghast.

Council officials quickly raised a yellow flag as a warning to sunbathers as the large brown blotch spread across the water. The bizarre incident occurred around midday at a stretch of beach in Benalmadena, near two hotels – the Globales Los Patos Park Hotel and Hotel Spa Benalmadena Palace.

Council chiefs said that the yellow warning flags had been raised when the sea started turning brown, attributing the discolouration to a broken water pipe and assuring the public that there was no danger to public health.

Donald Trump’s 50% steel and aluminium tariffs take effect | Business and Economy News

Mexico says tariffs make ‘no sense’ as Canada seeks negotiations to remove the levies ongoing.

In a move that has reignited trade tensions with key allies, United States President Donald Trump has doubled tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

The new rates, which came into effect early on Wednesday, raise duties from 25 percent to 50 percent. Trump says the measure is designed to bolster the struggling US metals sector.

“We started at 25 and then, after studying the data more, realised that it was a big help, but more help is needed. And so that is why the 50 [percent tariff] is starting tomorrow,” said White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett during a steel industry event in Washington on Tuesday.

The executive order applies to all trading partners except the United Kingdom, which has reached a provisional trade deal with Washington during a 90-day pause on broader tariffs.

British exports will continue to face a 25 percent rate until at least July 9.

Allies seek exemptions

The hike is expected to weigh heavily on Canada and Mexico, two of the US’s closest economic allies and among the largest suppliers of steel. Census Bureau data shows Canada alone exports more aluminium to the US than the rest of the top 10 countries combined. Almost half of the US aluminium consumption is imported.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office confirmed that “intensive and live negotiations” were ongoing to remove the tariffs.

Mexico’s Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard slammed the decision as irrational, noting the imbalance in steel trade between the two nations.

“It makes no sense for the United States to levy a tariff on a product in which you have a surplus,” he said, adding that Mexico would seek an exemption.

The European Union criticised the decision, saying it “strongly regrets” the move and warned it could take retaliatory action, accusing Washington of undermining attempts at a negotiated settlement.

OECD chief economist Alvaro Pereira told the AFP news agency that the tariffs have already dampened global trade, investment and consumption, and that the US will bear the brunt of the fallout.

While several of Trump’s tariff measures face legal scrutiny, they remain in force during the appeals process.
