Alfie Wise, who often appeared in films and TV shows with his friend Burt Reynolds, has died. He reportedly died July 22 of natural causes at the Thomas H. Corey VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., his longtime fiancée Stephanie Bliss told the Hollywood Reporter. He was 82.
Wise and Reynolds shared the screen in film and TV, including some of Reynolds’ greatest hits: the 1974 film “The Longest Yard,” the 1977 film “Smokey and the Bandit,” and the 1981 film “The Cannonball Run.” Wise also appeared with his friend in the CBS sitcom “Evening Shade” and ABC’s crime series “B.L Stryker.”
“His films were like an ongoing block party,” Wise told the New York Daily News after the death of Reynolds in 2018.
“You always knew you were going to have a great time with a Burt Reynolds movie,” he added.
Off screen, Wise worked as Reynolds’ assistant.
Wise graduated in 1964 from Penn State and joined the U.S. Navy, where he would produce and host shows. He later worked as an NBC page in Los Angeles. He made his acting debut in the 1972 TV movie “Call Her Mom.”
His filmography included “Midway” (1976), “Swashbuckler” (1976), and “Hot Stuff” (1979). Wise also appeared on the short-lived children’s show “Uncle Croc’s Block” with Lou Ferrigno and Charles Nelson Reilly in the titular role and the ABC series “The Fall Guy” with Lee Majors.
Wise’s last credit was 15 episodes of the CBBC show “S Club 7 in Miami.” After retiring from acting in 2000, he worked as a real estate agent in Juniper, Fla.
Maria Márquez began her Sonoran-style taqueria in 2022 from her home in Oakland, pairing the nearly translucent, lard-glossed flour tortillas she’d been making her whole life with meats grilled open-air over mesquite coals by her husband, Juan Carlos Garcìa. Three years later the business evolved to a food truck parked four days a week in a lot along one of Hayward’s main streets, with a comfortable dining tent set up in the far end. Few things in California life are as rewarding as a taco that hits your senses like the current that turns on the stadium lights. San Francisco Chronicle critic Cesar Hernandez led me to the taco Yaquí, a large tortilla folded around smoky chopped carne asada with refritos (flavored with chorizo and chipotle to double the smokiness) and a grilled Anaheim, its stem a curly tail sticking out from the bundle. Melted cheese had sealed the taco, but I pried it open to splat on smooth avocado sauce and roasted-tomato salsa served in a molcajete. Boom. The menu is short: quesadilla, caramelo, chorreada (made with a crackling corn tortilla drizzled with the rendered, toasted lard called asiento); asada, al pastor, chorizo, tripa. For overkill, the “special burrito” is wrapped in bacon and grilled to crispness. It’s probably something you only need to order once, but it’s there for all the TikTok likes should you choose.
Extra Helpings: On the subject of Sonoran-style taquerias, I must shout out Sonoratown, now with several locations across Los Angeles County, which fills its powdery-butter tortillas with cheese-laced guisados for chivichangas and my favorite burrito in the city with grilled steak or, lately, spiced cabeza.
An image obtained by The Sun shows Dan locked in conversation with the stunning brunette, who he chatted to for 15 minutes after the pair were “drawn to each other” in the departure queue.
A source told The Sun: “We saw Dan Edgar chatting away to a woman who was on a hen do on our flight – the plane was full of the entire Towie cast.
“One of the girls from the hen do, he took a liking to. He was with her for quite a fair bit of the flight and his cast members didn’t seem too happy.
“You could tell it was a flirty exchange – they were laughing and touching. There were definitely sparks flying.
“Sat near where they were talking was Sammy Root, Elma and Ella Wise. Ella was giving death stares – it looked like she was fuming. It was a very entertaining flight.
“We noticed they were drawn to each other – we could see them eyeing each other in the departure queue.
“It looked like socials were exchanged so it seems their conversation went really well.”
Dan’s potential new romance comes as the Towie cast jetted off to Portugal to kick off filming for the long-running ITV reality series’ 15th anniversary.
