Beautiful UK islands are ‘best place to see the Northern Lights’ this winter

Icelandair has listed the best places in the UK to spot the Northern Lights, as the cycle of the sun begins to move away from the solar maximum, meaning fewer chances to spot the aurora borealis

A UK island has been named the best spot for catching the Northern Lights while the solar maximum is still spreading colours across the night skies.

The next few months are likely to provide the best chances this decade to see the aurora borealis at its most spectacular, before the sun’s 11-year cycle begins to shift away from a stage that has created fantastic displays in the skies over the past two years.

To help travelers make the most of the season, Iceland’s flagship airline, Icelandair, has shared expert guidance on how to make the most of aurora season and how to capture stunning photos with this simple setting change on your iPhone.

Gísli S. Brynjólfsson, the director of Global Marketing at Icelandair, notes how important latitude and darkness are for seeing the Northern Lights. Which is why Shetland – the most northerly part of the UK, and one of the most remote, is top of his list of aurora spotting locations in the UK.

In Shetland, which sits about 100 miles from the most northerly tip of mainland Britain, the regularly appearing aurora has a special local name – mirrie dancers.

There are number of other reasons why a trip to the Shetlands is a good idea.

Fans of the eponymously titled BBC detective show set on the island will enjoy spotting some of the local haunts of Inspector Jimmy Perez. Excitingly, the most northerly of the Shetland Islands, Unst, is now home to SaxaVord, the first fully licensed vertical launch Spaceport in Europe. Soon rockets will begin blasting off from the port to take satelites into space.

Head to Shetland at the end of January – which is a fantastic time to see the Northern Lights in terms of your odds – and you’ll be treated to the world famous Up Helly Aa fire festival. The event, which is traditionally held on the last Tuesday of January, celebrates Shetland’s Norse heritage.

Thousands of visitors travel to the UK’s most northerly islands each year to watch the evening torchlit procession through Lerwick, which reaches its climax when the replica of a Viking long ship is set on fire.

Whatever time of the year you make it there, you’re sure to be blown away by the sheer beauty of the island chain. Shetland is made up of rolling hills, open moors and wide beaches filled with seals.

According to the Met Office, the North Lights can also be viewed across parts of mainland UK, particularly Scotland, North England, North Wales, and Northern Ireland, during periods of strong space weather conditions. As the sun can be pretty unpredictable when it’s going to put on a show (a solar storm) it’s a good idea to monitor a website called Aurora Watch. There you can check the sun’s geomagnetic activity in real time and will tell you when the Northern Lights are likely to be visible from the UK.

Mr Brynjólfsson explained why September to March is peak viewing time:

“Iceland is one of the most magical destinations to see the northern lights. The official Northern Lights season runs from September to March. During this time of year, days are darkest and shortest, translating to northern lights peak viewing time,” he said.

“If you’ve already got a vacation to Iceland booked and are planning a trip to see the northern lights, the Icelandic Met Office provides a Northern Lights forecast with predictions for the coming three days. The map displays cloud coverage over Iceland, and a numbered KP index scale is located in the top right corner, indicating the level of solar activity. The scale ranges from 0 to 9 (very low to very strong).”

The best UK destination to spot the Northern Lights, according to Icelandair

  1. Shetland Islands
  2. Orkney Islands
  3. Outer Hebrides
  4. Isle of Skye
  5. Caingorms National Park
  6. Northumberland
  7. Cumbria
  8. County Antrim
  9. Dumfries and Galloway
  10. North Yorkshire

Brace for surge of ‘winter killer’ that targets infants, doctors warn – the key symptom all parents must know

WITH chillier months fast approaching, Brits will be grappling with the many illnesses that like to circulate at high levels during winter.

One infection in particularly experts are raising alarm bells about is pertussis, or whooping cough, which they are warning can be fatal in young infants.

Whooping cough cases have been on the rise in recent years – with infants most affectedCredit: Getty

Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection affecting the lungs and airways that causes severe coughing fits, often ending in a ‘whooping’ sound as the person gasps for breath.

According to figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), cases have been rising since late 2023, with significant increases observed in 2024 and 2025.

This increase is part of a natural, cyclical pattern where cases peak every three to five years – with a peak being overdue after a period of very low numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While in adults and older children the cough can be bothersome and last for months, whooping cough in young children can be life-threatening.

Read more on whooping cough

In the UK’s 2024 resurgence, infants under three months of age experienced the highest incidence and risk of severe complications, with 328 cases reported between January and June 2024.

This age group is particularly vulnerable due to their undeveloped immune systems.

In an article published in Pediatrics, experts strongly encourage getting vaccinated to protect against the illness.

According to leading author Caitlin Li, infectious disease specialist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinburg School of Medicine, said whooping cough symptoms are different in infants.

Coughing bouts that last for a few minutes and make a ‘whoop’ sound is one of the main symptoms listed by the NHS.

But DrLi said there’s a key symptom to look out for in kids.

Brave parents of 15-day-old baby girl who died of whooping cough share her heartbreaking final moments

She said: “The characteristic whooping cough may be absent, but apnea, or breathing interruption, is common.”

Whooping cough in infants can also present with very high white blood cell count, which paediatricians might mistake for cancer or other non-infectious conditions.

Extremely high white blood cell counts in infants should prompt strong consideration of pertussis, according to the authors.

“Given that infants are at high risk for complications, pertussis vaccination of mothers during pregnancy is critical, as it protects newborns against this potentially fatal illness,” stressed Dr Li.

“Widespread vaccination is also an important tool to protect everyone.”

Babies under 12 months old with whooping cough have an increased chance of having problems such as dehydration, breathing difficulties, pneumonia, and seizures (fits), according to the NHS.

But in the UK, the whooping cough vaccine is routinely given as part of the 6-in-1 vaccine – for babies at eight, 12 and 16 weeks – and the 4-in-1 pre-school booster – for children aged three years four months.

People who are pregnant are also recommended to have the whooping cough vaccine.

You usually have it when you’re around 20 weeks pregnant to help protect your baby for the first few weeks of their life.

Rapid initiation of antibiotics is recommended for all patients with confirmed or suspected whooping cough.

If given early, this may improve symptoms, while later treatment is unlikely to impact symptoms, although it does reduce transmission.

The NHS also recommends some things you can do to help ease the symptoms of whooping cough – get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids, and take paracetamol or ibuprofen if you or your child are uncomfortable

But it urges you call 999 or go to A&E if:

  • your or your child’s lips, tongue, face or skin suddenly turn blue or grey (on black or brown skin this may be easier to see on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet)
  • you or your child are finding it hard to breathe properly (shallow breathing)
  • you or your child have chest pain that’s worse when breathing or coughing – this could be a sign of pneumonia
  • your child is having seizures (fits)

Full list of symptoms of whooping cough

WHOOPING cough is a bacterial infection of the lungs and breathing tubes.

The first signs of the condition tend to be similar to a cold – such as a runny nose, a sore throat, red and watery eyes, and a slightly raised temperature.

After about a week, other signs start to appear. These include:

  • Coughing bouts that last for a few minutes and are worse at night
  • “Whoop” sounds as your gasp for breath between coughs
  • Difficulty breathing after a coughing bout
  • Turning blue or grey (children)
  • Becoming very red in the face (adults)
  • Bringing up thick mucus, which can make you vomit
  • Bleeding under the skin or in the eyes
  • Feeling very tired after coughing

The cough may last several weeks or months.

Babies under six months have an increased risk of problems such as dehydration, breathing problems, pneumonia and seizures.

Older children and adults may experience sore ribs, hernia, middle ear infections, and urinary incontinence.

Many have called for the popular soda to be “left alone” as others marvelled at the interesting mix.

Irn Bru’s latest venture is made with a blend of spiced ginger and cinnamon.

The quirky drink comes packaged in a red can with the firm’s trademark logo on the front.

Unlike the OG drink, however, this special edition also features a giant snowflake as a nod to the festive season.

The new flavour has inspired awe and ire as dozens hopped online to share their views.

Some shoppers called for the drink to be “left alone”, while another simply said “ew”.

One user said: “As a Scottish person. Some things are just best left alone. Can’t beat the OG drink. Some things just need leaving alone.”

Others, however, enthused it’s the perfect teetotal tipple for Christmas.

One shopper said: “I got some yesterday, quite like it! It’ll never replace the 1901 stuff but it’s a pleasant drink for Christmas

Another added: “That sounds tempting!”

Winter Bru will roll out across shops from November 1 for a period of eight weeks.

Still Game legend stars in cheeky throwback Irn-Bru advert that brings back iconic catchphrase

It will be available in a 330ml can for £1.09.

Last year, the firm announced two new limited edition flavours that were said to taste like childhood sweets.

The Raspberry Ripple flavour and Wild Berry Slush were a huge success as fans rushed to stores to buy them.

One thrilled shopper took to social media and said: “The raspberry ripple one is lush.”

As a second chimed in with: “It tastes like Drumstick lollies.”

As a third agreed, saying: “I liked it tasted like a drumstick lolly to me.”

“Yesssirr that drinks my favourite flavour Irn Bru bought four cans of the raspberry ripple it was that good,” said another.

Before a final shopper commented: “Irn Bru is my all time favourite drink so wasn’t sure about these flavoured ones, but this tastes and smells exactly like a drumstick lolly. Soooooo good!!”

As others compared the interesting new flavour to an ice cream arctic roll, a classic screwball dessert or even raspberry sauce you find in an ice cream truck.

With one describing it as having “heavy nostalgic vibes of going to an ice cream van and asking for a screwball ice cream and they put that raspberry sauce on it. Taste vibes”.

Robins will flock to your garden if you plant cheap £1.99 Wilko buy in October

WITH winter approaching there’s a simple step you can take to attract robins to your garden.

Santa’s little helper will be drawn to your outdoor space with this budget buy.

Making a simple addition to your garden can help to attract robins (stock image)Credit: Alamy

Adding this one plant to your garden will boost the wildlife, particularly robins.

As Britain’s favourite bird, robins provide ecological benefits to your space.

This includes acting as a natural pest controller and aiding in seed dispersal.

While you can try to attract these birds with food, providing nest material can also be a huge draw.

Ivy benefits

According to the experts at Woodland Trust, robins are drawn to nest boxes if they’re under a natural cover.

This makes ivy or other climbing plants ideal additions to your garden set-up.

And you can now pick up pots of Ivy Mix for just £1.99 each from Wilko.

Available in classic green or with white detailing on the leaves, this budget plant makes the perfect autumn addition to your garden.

According to the product description, this “vigorous climbing foliage” can be “wonderful for creating dense coverage to create shade, cover structures, or act as a backdrop to other plants”.

It is also versatile and hardy, making it ideal for even the most inexperienced of gardeners.

Five autumn plants perfect to put in your garden the first day of Fall as they grow even better than in Spring

Role of robins

Like all birds, robins can prove useful for tackling insects and creepy crawlies in your garden.

And with the decline in insects during the colder weather, robins are known to forage more on the ground.

This can help to aerate the soil in your garden throughout autumn and winter.

Meanwhile, their droppings can help to act as a natural fertiliser in your garden.

And since the species mainly feed on fruits and seeds, they can also help with seed dispersal.

October gardening jobs

The Sun’s Gardening Editor, Veronica Lorraine, has shared the jobs you need to tackle in October.

“It’s a good time to trim deciduous hedges – like box, yew, hawthorn, hornbean and beech – plus hedge trimmers are a great upper body workout!

Make leafmould – gather up all the fallen leaves and fill either bin bags or plastic carrier bags. Seal the top, stick a few small holes in the bag – and then store for a year or more. Free compost!

It’s unlikely you’ll get any more red tomatoes so have one final harvest and chuck the plants on the compost. See if you can get the green ones to ripen by putting in a drawer (some say with a banana). Also keep the seeds from a couple – and plant again next year if they went well.

Finish getting in your spring bulbs. Ideally you’d have done daffs and alliums, but tulips are better in the ground when the soil temperature gets a bit colder.

It’s good to leave some plant litter in the ground – it adds to the nutrients as it rots down, and provides shelter and food for insects. But remove the manky brown bits collapsing all over the lawn/winter structure.

Mulch – it not only suppresses weeds, but keeps the soil warm, improves water retention and adds a little winter duvet to your outside space.

October’s a good month for carrots, peas, asparagus, broad beans, and rhubarb.”

Lakeland’s new £17.99 gadget is a ‘condensation catcher’ for damp homes in the winter months

Many households will experience dampness later in the year, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to tackle it.

The Absodry Mini Moisture Absorber is one solution shoppers are trying, and it only costs £17.99 from Lakeland.

The moisture absorber is minimal and discreet.

Absorber, £17.99

Condensation on windows is commonly caused by warm air hitting a cold surface, which means it increases when outside temperatures drop.

Autumnal weather is here, and leaving condensation to build up can lead to longer-term problems, like damp.

The Lakeland Absodry Mini Moisture Absorber is a new solution, launched just in time for the latter part of the year.

Unlike large dehumidifiers that are expensive and can take up lots of space, a moisture absorber could do the trick for targeting specific areas.

Due to its small size, it can be placed on windowsills or in tight corners, plus you can move it around to tackle different rooms.

It contains absorbent crystals, which soak up excess moisture from the air and collect it as water which can then be emptied.

Unlike the bead-filled bags you can buy, these are neatly tucked away within the minimal outer shell, which comes in five colours.

The bags last up to 90 days, and you can buy inexpensive refills on Lakeland’s website when you need a replacement.

One handy thing is that because the dehumidifier alternative requires no power, it won’t run up your electricity bill like a large gadget could.

Although it’s very newly launched, shoppers have started leaving their feedback on the Absodry Mini Moisture Absorber, praising how effective it is.

One shopper said: ‘’Great little unit, takes moisture out of my room, wake up in morning and doesn’t feel damp – great product.’’

Another shopper commented: ‘’I like the look of this item and have two.

‘’I have placed them in my bedrooms on the window sill.

‘’They are collecting moisture well, but on the colder nights there is still a little on the windows.’’

A third shopper added: ‘’I was given an Absodry Mini by someone who purchased it from Lakeland, its collected so much moisture from the air which is in my Bedroom.

‘’I’ve seen it reduce the condensation I get on my windows in the morning, I recommend getting one, I’m going to purchase the larger Absodry for my bathroom next as its always an issue when I shower.’’

Brit in Tenerife issues warning over risk that ‘gets worse in winter’

A Brit living in Tenerife has shared a vital warning for visiting Brits, urging them to be ‘very careful and aware’ if they’re planning to visit for some winter sun

A Brit who traded the UK for sun-soaked Tenerife has issued a stark warning to fellow holidaymakers heading to the popular winter sun destination. The video resurfaced as one visitor to the island claimed three ‘racist’ hospitals turned her away.

The Canary Island, a favourite among those seeking some winter warmth, may seem like paradise, but visitors are being urged to stay on their toes. TikTok user @theknightstrider1, who’s called Tenerife home for over a decade, warns of a recurring issue that hits the island every winter season. Unlike mainland Spain, which winds down in winter, Tenerife’s tourist trade thrives, drawing in criminal gangs who “fly in” with the sole aim of pickpocketing from tourists – some even treating it like a “full-time job”.

In his video, which he posted last year, the expat explained: “They are very good at it, and they will do pickpocketing. They will steal from cars if you leave stuff inside them, so please do be very careful with your wallets, and stuff like that.”

Content cannot be displayed without consent

He went on to say: “If you’re down here, busy, the golden mile area, the Sunday markets, the Tuesday markets, all of that – those busy areas – people bumping into you, just be careful. Just like at home, we do have pickpockets around.

“I normally just take my little wallet out, and I have it in my front pocket. Just be very careful and aware. You’ll be absolutely fine if you are but, unfortunately, so many people switch off, and they have their wallet busting with cash hanging out of their back pocket.”

He warns that pickpockets can be shockingly quick, swooping in for the pinch when you’re least expecting it.

The expat also claimed thieves are on the hunt for pricey electronics like cameras and iPads, which shouldn’t be left unsecured or in plain sight. Recently, he’s heard “more and more” tales of holidaymakers being targeted.

The video sparked a wave of comments online. One user remarked: “I genuinely was expecting you to say bring a coat.”

Others fondly recalled their holidays, with one posting: “Never had an issue over there. Can’t wait to go back in December.”

Not everyone is eager to return though, as another commented: “I don’t know what is going on in Tenerife. I know it’s not just Tenerife, but the vibe is off. I don’t think I would go back, and I’m not alone in that.”

Another person added: “Such a shame. Always come in the winter, but noticed it’s definitely getting worse. Just don’t feel safe in the evening.”

I planted this 21p Asda plant to fill my outside space with ‘ rainbow of colour’ all Autumn, reveals Gardening Pro

IT was the Autumn equinox on Monday – which means the days are about to get a lot shorter.

Before you know it, it will be dark when you get home from work and when you get up in the morning.

A lawn full of colorful crocus in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Pansies and violas are available in garden centres and supermarkets now.Credit: Getty

And although that means less gardening time – there’s still loads you can get in the ground or your greenhouse.

In fact, Autumn is a great time to get planting – simply because the soil is still warm but the weather is cooler – which means roots can establish well before Winter.

Whether it’s for produce or colour before Christmas – or flowers after – I’ve put together a guide on what can go in the ground now.

FLOWERS

You can always tell from what’s on sale in your local garden centre or supermarket as to what will bring you colour in the run up before Christmas.

But staples like container grown Geums, Cyclamen, Astor, Japanese Anenome, and Chrysanthemums can be bought in flower and planted now.

Plus racks of bedding plants like pansies, viola and primroses are filling supermarket shelves.

I managed to find three packs of eight viola plugs from Asda for just a fiver last weekend – which means each of the 24 plugs are only 20p.

Plus the gorgeous colour combinations will fill your garden with rainbows of colour.

And a lot of the garden centres are offering Winter Bedding packs – which takes the decision of what to buy out of your hands – and provides you with a lovely rainbow of colours for your outside space.=

Seeds-wise – you can plant sweetpea, poppies, calendula, cornflower, nemesia, forget-me-nots, and lavender under cover.

BULBS

Daffodils, crocus, alliums and grape hyacinth bulbs are good to go in September and October – as well as the more unusual large Fritalliaries  and Camassia – which look really like bluebells.

Gardener shares ‘genius’ bulb planting hack that will give your months of spring flowers & it takes seconds to do

But hold fire until November until you plant your tulip bulbs – they love the colder weather.

If you put them in too early, you’ll risk the change of Tulip Fire, which is a fungal disease that causes distorted leaves and spots – that look like scorch marks – on the tulips themselves.

A lot of online garden centres have big bulb sales on at the moment, so it’s worth shopping around.

Suttons Seeds are offering Sun Gardening readers an exclusive link to get 80 per cent off their bulb sales right now.

Access it now at www.suttons.co.uk/sunoffer

VEGETABLES AND FRUIT

Butterhead and Lamb’s lettuce actually like the colder weather – so under a cloche or cold frame, or in a greenhouse – sow the seeds thinly, about 1.5cm deep. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply.

Overwintering cauliflower seeds like ‘All The Year Round’ and ‘Autumn Giant’ can be planted now – under protection.

Plus onion seeds, winter greens, garlic, pak choi, spinach and kale.

There’s a lot of fruit you can grow in pots – including cherries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries.

Then wait until November for bare root season

NEWS! Did you know that 22 billion carrot seeds are sown each year in the UK, and we eat our way through 700,000 tonnes of carrots annually?
This works out to be around 100 per person, and laid out end to end they would stretch 1.4 million miles – two and a half trips to the moon.
And as British growers provide 97 per cent of the carrots consumers buy in the UK, there is almost no need to buy imported carrots.
They’re also worth £290m to the UK Economy yet are one of the cheapest vegetables – with loads of nutritional benefits.
The incredible stats have been released in time for British Carrot Day on Friday – which celebrates the UK carrot growing and encourages people to buy, get creative, eat, and cook with carrots.
For more information visit www.britishcarrots.co.uk

NEWS! A whopping leaf four metres long has been grown at the Eden Project, Cornwall. Lodoicea maldivica, more commonly known as coco de mer, is native to the islands of the Seychelles and is famous for producing the world’s largest and heaviest seed.
The mature leaf has taken around ten years to develop to this stage. And over the next decade, it could reach a massive eight to ten metres. A coco de mer can live for up to 800 years, reaching up to 112 feet tall.

TOP TIP! September is the start of baby hedgehog (hoglet) season, and you may find that they need your help.
Autumn Juvenile hedgehogs are old enough to be away from their mums, but often too small to hibernate successfully.
Guidance from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society  says that “if the hedgehog is a regular visitor to your garden, is only seen at night, appears active and you are prepared to feed it every night then it can be left in the wild.
But  if the hedgehog goes off its food, wobbles and staggers or starts coming out in the day, then it needs extra help as soon as possible.
The best way to ensure wild hedgehogs are well-fed is to create organic wild spaces, leafy corners and log piles where they can forage for natural foods, like grubs and insects.
To supplement their diet in the wild, you can offer hedgehogs a good quality meaty hedgehog food, meaty cat or dog food or dry biscuits for cats.

NEWS! If you fancy turning your hand to growing houseplants, Unwins have launched a brand new Houseplant Seed Collection, a curated range of eight varieties that have been specially selected and bred to flourish in UK and Irish homes.
Including Asparagus Ferns, Sempervivum, Bird of Paradise and Dichondra Silver Surfer, the packs are available now in your local garden centre.
Natasha Lane, Head of Seed, for Unwins, commented: “We’re very excited to be launching a collection of houseplant seeds for the first time. It now means that it’s easier than ever to create your very own indoor jungle. Whether you’re looking to enhance wellbeing, purify the air, or simply add style to your space, our houseplant seeds are ready to grow with you.”

And some stunning pieces have popped up at Sainsbury’s in-store and online.

Tu Clothing is the supermarket‘s in-house fashion label and regularly delights fashion fans with its stylish buys at bargain prices.

The Navy Check Short Scarf Coat, in particular, has been catching the eye of savvy fashionistas.

The scarf-coat combo is one of the biggest outerwear trends on the catwalks for AW25.

The chic, stylish update on a wardrobe staple means that you no longer have to faff around adding an extra accessory to your look – your coat already has a matching scarf attached.

And the scarf is detachable so you can decide if you want to have it as part of your outfit or not.

The stylish Sainsbury’s version is priced at £55 and comes in sizes XS to XL.

Describing it on the website, supermarket bosses say: “A timeless piece for colder weather, our navy short coat comes in a check design with button fastening and front pockets.

“Crafted with a touch of wool for extra warmth. Includes a matching scarf for an effortlessly stylish look this season.”

It’s already been hailed as one of the supermarket’s bestsellers for autumn and has racked up rave reviews online too.

I’m a fashion editor – 8 clothes mistakes giving your age away

One delighted shopper gushed: “A really cosy coat, love the detachable scarf.

“I ordered a size smaller, I’m glad I did as it is really roomy. I love the material and colour.”

“Very happy with this jacket, loose fit so lots of room for sweaters below”, added a second.

A third wrote: “Really delighted by the jacket. Looks classy on and the scarf (which can be detached) is an added bonus.

“Will make a lovely warm jacket going into autumn/winter. I did go down 2 sizes to get the fit and look I wanted.”

A fourth said: “This coat is so soft. Very pleased, the colours are gorgeous and it’s very stylish.”

A fifth chimed in: “Love this coat. It’s cosy and very smart and fashionable.

“Lovely to have a warm detachable scarf as well. Very well made too.

“Just love it. Can’t wait for it to be cold enough to wear it. Well done Tu.”

Meanwhile, a sixth echoed: “I really like this coat, it feels very soft and looks very smart.

“It is quite large but I believe that is the cocoon style. I love the colours and the matching scarf. It is also a very good price.”

Is supermarket fashion the new high street?

DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale weighs in:

The supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, as you head in to do your weekly food shop you can also pick up a selection of purse-friendly, stylish pieces for all the family.

Tesco has just announced a 0.7 per cent increase in the quarter thanks to a ‘strong growth in clothing’ and M&S has earnt the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.

Asda’s clothing line George has made £1.5 million for the supermarket in 2023, 80 per cent of Sainsbury’s clothes sold at full price rather than discounted and Nutmeg at Morrisons sales are also up 2 per cent in the past year.

So what is it about supermarket fashion that is becoming so successful?

Apart from the clothing actually being affordable, it’s good quality too – with many being part of schemes such as the Better Cotton Initiative.

A lot of the time they keep to classic pieces that they know will last the customer year after year.

Plus because they buy so much stock they can turn around pieces quickly and buy for cheaper because of the volumes.

The cream shaggy faux fur rug was originally priced at £18.

But it’s currently scanning for just £4.50. This works out at a huge £13.50 saving.

And it’s not just an insulation solution for your floors.

A savvy bargain hunter revealed she has been using the rug as a throw for her bed and sofa after snapping up two in her local store.

Posting on the BARGAIN LOVERS – Poundland, Home Bargains, B&M, Primark, The Range & More Facebook group, which boasts 910,000 members, Jayne said: “Bargain down to £4.50 at B&M.

“iv put one on my sofa and bed “

Other shoppers are now racing to pick one up, as one gushed: “I need.”

A second asked a loved one: “Have u any in if so please save me 2 an let me know.”

Meanwhile, a third cried: “I need a new rug!!! When we going?”

What Can You Get For Under £1 at B&M Stores

Elsewhere in store, a mum has revealed the top B&M buys you can grab now to spread the cost of Christmas shopping.

Kirsty, who jokingly describes herself as ”Christmas crazy”, recently shared the epic haul of goodies she got her teenager ahead of the festive season.

While some people reckon Christmas shopping in September is ”too early” – and even her hubby reckons she’s ”lost the plot” – sorting out the presents months in advance is a great way to spread the cost.

”I start shopping [for Christmas] straight away, soon as the year starts – especially once we get to February, March, April, I’m in full-swing Christmas,” Kirsty told her 29k followers on TikTok.

The monster haul included just some of the items the mum will be treating her 16-year-old daughter to during the festive season.

The majority of the goodies she snapped up as long as six months ago were purchased at B&M and included a range of items.

Mums are also snapping up a £10 festive buy that guarantees an hour of peace from your kids.

How to save money at B&M

Shoppers have saved hundreds of pounds a year by using B&M’s scanner app.

The scanner lets you see if an item’s price is cheaper than advertised on the shop floor label.

Products that are typically discounted are seasonal items and old stock that B&M is trying to shift.

The app is free to download off the B&M Stores mobile app via Google Play or the Apple App Store.

According to one ex-B&M manager, you’ll want to visit your local branch at 10am on a Wednesday too.

Here’s how you can join the B&M bargain hunt:

  • Download the B&M app for free on any smartphone with an App Store or Google Play.
  • Once you’ve installed it on your device, click on the option labelled “more” on the bottom, right-hand side of the app home page.
  • You’ll then find an option that says “barcode scanner”. Click on this and you’ll open a camera screen.
  • Use the camera to hover over the barcode of the product you wish to check.
  • If the price comes up as lower, take it to the cash desk and it will automatically scan at the lower price.
  • You don’t need to sign up to the B&M app to use the barcode scanner.

Drivers urged to make simple changes to their car’s air conditioning as weather gets colder to save thousands

DRIVERS have been urged to make changes to their car’s air con that will save them thousands of pounds.

Experts have warned that not using your motor’s air con this winter could see drivers dealing with costly repairs or even fines of up to £1,000.

Air conditioning isn’t just for cooling off in those hot summer months.

Many drivers may think switching off their air con in the winter will help save money – but the opposite is true.

It also works as a dehumidifier, preventing mould, odours, and health risks but only if it is used regularly.

If you don’t use it for a period of time it can lead to moisture build up, bacteria thriving and repairs can become costly.

And a misted windscreen can prove more than just a nuisance – it could land you with a £1,000 fine and three points on your license.

Using your air con is the quickest way to clear it and it will also regulate your heating and cooling to keep the motor’s cabin comfortable.

Car maintenance experts at Fixter have shared six expert tips on how to properly use your air con system during the colder months as well as maintenance tips.

Run your AC regularly

Their first tip is to run your air con regularly, even on cooler settings, a small habit that can save you from those costly long-term repairs.

Experts at Fixter recommend to use your air-con for 10 to 15 minutes once a week and occasionally on a colder setting.

This will keep seals lubricated, prevents mould growth and stops the compressor from seizing.

Watch moment new world’s fastest car – Yangwang U9 Xtreme – hit 308mph & break record

Demist your windscreen

They also advise that you demist your windscreen fast to stay legal and avoid that hefty £1,000 fine.

They say that the quickest and safest way to clear fog or frost is by combining warm air with your air con.

This will reduce humidity while the heat will speed up defogging.

You should direct airflow at the glass and avoid using your recirculation mode.

Don’t skip your winter service

Even if you’re not blasting cold air, your air con is still working hard behind the scenes, experts at Fixter say.

A regular servicing will keep the air con system efficient and will prevent bacteria building up.

It will also reduce the risk of breakdowns when you need it most, they added.

Check your cabin filter and airflow

If your filters are clogged, your air con is going to have to do more work to demist your windscreen.

Fixter says a clogged pollen or cabin filter will restrict airflow, make your demisting slower and get your air con working harder.

And if your vents feel weak, it could also men your refrigerant is low – both are quick fixes if caught early but are expensive if ignored.

Don’t ignore unpleasant smells

If there are some unpleasant smells in your cabin, it may be a sign of a bigger problem.

Musty odours when you turn on your air con are usually caused by mould or bacteria, Fixter says.

This will affect cabin air quality as well as your health and can be fixed with a clean or filter replacement.

Clear your vents before driving

Fixter says that clearing your vents before driving is also crucial.

Snow or ice blocking your cars external vents can stop your air con from circulating air properly, forcing the fan to overwork.

You should always brush them clear before setting off.

More on motors

Whether it’s a weird noise or a check engine light, every driver knows the dreaded feeling of another costly trip to the mechanic.

Thankfully, a new middle aisle buy from Lidl can help to save you money by ensuring one part of your car is always in perfect shape.

What should be in your winter car kit?

By Jacob Jaffa, Motors Reporter

Here’s what should be included in your winter car kit, according to the RAC:

  1. Ice scraper
  2. Torch
  3. Paper maps
  4. Phone charger
  5. Warm clothes/blankets
  6. High-vis clothing
  7. Jump cables
  8. Jerry can
  9. Warning triangles
  10. Food and drink

A major car brand recently recalled another 10,000 motors in the UK over a serious safety flaw.

Another brand recalled five models in UK over a defect that increases risk of crash.

And a huge UK car dealership has announced its sudden closure.

Plus a small parking mistake that could land drivers a hefty fine of up to £1,000.

Travel expert issues warning to Brits holidaying in Thailand this winter

Thailand is a popular travel destination for Brits seeking some winter sun – but new travel restrictions came into place earlier this year that people should be aware of before arriving

As the colder weather approaches, some of us may not be ready to say goodbye to summer, and looking for some winter sun.

While there are many destinations offering balmy weather for freezing cold Brits, Thailand is a popular spot for many people over the winter months. Data from Thailand Travel Specialists at Travelbag found that during peak travel seasons (November to February), departures to Thailand increase by more than 158 per cent.

More than 35 million visitors flock to Thailand annually, with more than 700,000 travelling from the UK alone. With this demand, the experts urge all travellers to be aware of the new entry requirement that took effect in May of this year to avoid any stress or delays when entering the country.

According to Helen Wheat, asia destination manager at Travelbag said: “As of May, all foreign nationals travelling to Thailand must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online. While there is no strict minimum time, it is recommended to submit the TDAC at least 72 hours before arrival to avoid any delays in processing.”

She said this digital form has replaced the traditional paper TM6 card to “streamline immigration procedures” and does not require any fee or payment.

Wheat further noted: “If the TDAC isn’t completed in advance, travellers may experience delays at immigration and be required to fill it out at a self-service kiosk on arrival, which can take much longer.”

The expert also recommended screenshotting or emailing the confirmation to your phone as you may be asked to show it, and said to make sure you have your passport, flight details and accommodation information ready when completing the form.

“At Travelbag, we advise all customers to complete the TDAC ahead of time to avoid unnecessary stress and enjoy a hassle-free start to their trip,” Wheat added.

For those who don’t want to travel as far as Thailand, there’s a European secret that delivers a comparable adventure much nearer to home. The Shala River has earned the title “Thailand of Europe,” offering a taste of paradise without the lengthy journey or cost of a holiday in Southeast Asia. It features stunning turquoise waters and dense, rainforest-like landscapes, creating an exotic adventure in Europe’s heartland.

Ideal for an autumn getaway, Albania enjoys delightfully mild temperatures of approximately 25C in October, with plenty of sunshine making it perfect for late-season sun-seekers.

For those drawn to Thailand’s 1,500 miles of shoreline and more than 1,400 islands scattered with limestone formations, colourful coral reefs, and magnificent beaches, Albania’s Shala River offers an extraordinary substitute.

‘Winter sun or you get another stay for free’ guarantee unveiled by European hotel

With almost 340 days of sunshine a year, Cyprus is one of Europe’s sunniest destinations within a short-haul flight of the UK. However, it doesn’t always shine on the sunny isle

A hotel has begun offering sunshine-guaranteed stays so rained-on guests don’t miss out.

Guests at City of Dreams Mediterranean in Limassol can enjoy a complimentary return stay if they don’t have a sunny holiday this autumn and winter. With almost 340 days of sunshine a year, Cyprus is one of Europe’s sunniest destinations within a short-haul flight of the UK.

“City of Dreams Mediterranean is the only luxury five-star resort ready to put its weather where its mouth is: if the sun doesn’t shine during your stay, you’ll receive a complimentary night on your next visit for every day that doesn’t meet the Sunshine Guarantee definition,” the hotel tempts in a statement about the offer.

“Sunshine” is defined as a day with at least 70% direct sunlight between 9am and 5pm, as measured by AccuWeather.com. A weekly sunshine calendar will be shared online so guests can track it.

Guests receive a free stay next time they visit, in the form of one complimentary night for every full day that doesn’t meet the Sunshine Guarantee during their current stay. That means if it rains all week, you can come back and get a week’s free accommodation.

The hotel is fourteen storeys and has more than 500 guest rooms and suites, as well as an outdoor amphitheatre, a family adventure park, and a variety of premium dining outlets and luxury retail.

“We want to give our guests complete confidence when booking their trip,” says Grant Johnson, Senior Vice President and Property General Manager. “With the Sunshine Guarantee, they know they’ll enjoy the famous weather here in Cyprus and if not, they’ll be rewarded. Coupled with our new excursion programme, it’s the perfect time to explore everything the island has to offer.”

Cyprus has long been a favourite getaway for British holidaymakers. A unique gem in the Mediterranean, the island lies just south of Turkey and to the southeast of Greece. Its appeal as a travel destination is immediately apparent.

It is also an increasingly popular place for British OAPS to retire to.

With fresh sea air and a wealth of five-star hotels, luxury resorts, and top-tier restaurants, it’s the ideal place to unwind under the sun. Beyond the beaches and upscale amenities, Cyprus also exudes a natural charm and deep cultural richness that adds to its allure for travellers.

Almond blossoms and roadside orange stalls colour the Cypriot countryside, where life moves at a more relaxed, peaceful rhythm. From the charming villages of the Troodos Mountains to the ancient ruins of the Paphos Archaeological Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the famed Tombs of the Kings—the island is a treasure trove for curious explorers. But what makes Cyprus especially attractive for retirees?

First and foremost, the climate is a major advantage. Although air conditioning is essential in the hotter months, the island’s long, sunny seasons mean you can enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle well into the cooler months. Compared to Spain, the cost of living in Cyprus is lower. According to Rest Less, retirees can benefit from a flexible tax system, and real estate remains relatively affordable. Healthcare standards are high, with both public and private medical options available. For those who want to stay active, there are plenty of hiking trails and even a ski resort in the Troodos Mountains.

Cyprus is also known for its safety, a comfort to both travellers and retirees. The island hosts a thriving international community and has two major airports—Larnaca and Paphos—making travel to and from the UK or elsewhere simple and convenient. The local cuisine and warm Cypriot hospitality are also major draws. Think: tender slow-cooked lamb, sweet loukoumades (deep-fried dough balls), and juicy naval oranges—all sure to keep your tastebuds happy.

Popular places to settle include Larnaca, Paphos, and the capital city, Nicosia. Still, with Cyprus’s stunning scenery and cultural depth, deciding where to put down roots might be the toughest decision of all.

Viral destination is more than a summer escape – ‘winter is the best time to go’

Images of this enchanting destination have overtaken TikTok feeds all summer, but winter is the best time to visit this Slovenian city – home to some of the bluest waters on the continent

Just because summer has come to a close, doesn’t mean you should turn a cold shoulder to your favourite holiday hotspots. Some places double as a sunny escape and a winter wonderland, and a new list is highlighting a destination that is the best of both.

The car rental experts at SIXT have revealed the most stunning winter sun destinations across Europe. At the top of the list is Lake Bled, Slovenia, home to one of the continent’s bluest bodies of water.

SIXT analysed the bluest bodies of water in Europe to note the most picturesque winter destinations for Brits to visit during the shoulder season and cold months. The group colour-picked high-resolution photographs of 100 of the most beautiful bodies of water across Europe before settling on Lake Bled as one of the top spots.

According to SIXT, Lake Bled is the highest ranking city break destination and third bluest in Europe. It also has a stunning mountainous landscape that makes it an even more surreal travel experience.

Skating on the lake is not recommended for safety reasons, but there are indoor and outdoor rinks to enjoy(Image: Getty Images/Vetta)

Although a hotspot for tourists in the summer, this city break is also a hidden gem for those seeking a snowy few days away this winter. Not only does the blue water create an impressive backdrop, but Bled is the site of many fun winter activities.

Skating on the lake is not recommended, however there are plenty of indoor and outdoor rinks for travellers to enjoy in addition to skiing, snowboarding and sledging on nearby slopes like Straža Hill. Straža also happens to be considered the most beautiful viewpoint in the area that offers incredible vantages of the city of Bled, the lake, and surrounding mountains.

Just a few years ago, Slovenia was a relatively under the radar holiday destination, but 2023 and 2024 saw record-breaking growth. In the UK alone, searches for ‘flights to Ljubljana’ surged exponentially.

From December onward, a snowy backdrop sets in, creating a magical setting without the peak-season crowds, perfect for romantic getaways. It’s this combination of natural beauty, blue water and winter activities that makes Lake Bled Europe’s ultimate cold-weather city break this year.

Russian, Belarusian athletes to compete neutrally in 2026 Winter Olympics | Olympics News

Athletes will undergo checks to prove they do not actively support the war in Ukraine or have links with the army.

Russians will compete as neutral independent athletes without a national flag or anthem at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee has said, maintaining the same sanctions as the Paris Summer Games last year.

The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023 for recognising regional Olympic councils for Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine – Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia – following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, saying the move had violated the Olympic Charter.

“We also spoke about the Independent Neutral Athletes (AINs). This will be nothing new,” IOC President Kirsty Coventry told a news conference. “The executive board will take the exact same approach that was done in Paris (2024 Olympics). Nothing has changed.”

Russian and Belarusian athletes who reach qualifying times will be first vetted for any links to the Russian military or support of the war in Ukraine, both of which will exclude them.

Russian teams are banned from the Games. Belarus has acted as a staging ground for the invasion of Ukraine.

A small number of individual Russian and Belarusian athletes were allowed to take part as AINs in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics after first passing rigorous vetting by the IOC.

They competed without the Russian or Belarusian flag and anthem. Instead, they took part as neutral athletes.

Four Russian figure skaters in men’s and women’s singles were recently approved by the International Skating Union to try to qualify for the Games, which start on February 6, 2026 in Italy, as neutral athletes.

Amazon’s 89p mini dehumidifiers ‘keep condensation away’ in the winter

If you live in a house that’s prone to damp, the problem can get worse over the colder months, especially if it’s not tackled.

A dehumidifier can help, but you don’t have to splurge to buy one – Amazon has slashed the set of 12 Nyxi dehumidifiers from £13.49 to £11.46, working out at 89p each.

A Nyxi Interior Dehumidifier next to a stack of books on a windowsill.

The dehumidifier pots can fit on windowsills and in corners.

Nyxi Dehumidifier Set of 12,
£11.46 (was £13.49)

Condensation on windows might be a common occurrence in the autumn and winter, but it can lead to problems.

Dehumidifiers are a solution that many households turn to for the latter part of the year.

They work by taking moisture from the air, which soaks into the beads and collects as water at the bottom.

Each one can hold up to 500ml, lasting 3-5 weeks depending how much moisture there is, but with 12 replacements, it could end up as an entire year’s supply.

Thanks to the small size, each one can fit in any area, which can prove difficult with a large dehumidifier.

This means you could place them on windowsills to collect condensation, or in wardrobes to ensure clothes don’t get damp or mouldy.

Utility rooms and bathrooms naturally get super damp, so these are also good places to use the dehumidifiers to reduce humidity.

If left alone, damp can progress and cause damage to walls and also lead to mould, which creates an unhealthy living environment.

The affordable Amazon buy has gained thousands of reviews, with shoppers praising how affordable and effective the dehumidifiers are.

One shopper said: ‘’I bought these dehumidifiers as I live in a ground-floor flat, and during the wet weather I cannot hang out my laundry, so I have to hand it on a clothes horse next to the radiators.

‘’As we all know this will cause dampness, so these dehumidifiers are ideal – they suck up all the moisture in the air and store it in the lower section.

‘’After about 3 months I can throw them away, and replace them with new ones, helping me keep my flat free from mould and dampness.’’

Another shopper commented: ‘’I find these to be quite useful for small rooms.

‘’I live in Devon and near the sea which means I have double the amount of humidity than other places.

‘’High electric bill prevented me from using a dehumidifier so this is the next best thing.

‘’They usually last about 6-8 weeks in my house.’’

A third shopper added: ”This product is brilliant for keeping condensation away from windows in the cold months.”

Beautiful European island is ‘perfect for winter sun’ with ‘paradise’ beaches

Brits looking for winter sun holidays don’t need to commit to long-haul breaks as there are some beautiful European hotspots that are worth having on your radar

Summer travel may be coming to an end as those crisp autumn days approach, but it often feels like in the blink of an eye, winter hits.

The good news is that there’s no need to give in to those winter blues, as there are heaps of beautiful destinations where you can avoid the dark and dreary weather.

If it’s nearly-guaranteed hot and sunny weather you want then long-haul is your best bet, but if you just want a bit of sunshine and an escape from the inevitable UK rain, Europe also has a plethora of options.

While the Greek Islands are typically associated with the summer months, don’t rule them out in winter. Mykonos has recently been named as one of Europe’s top 10 best destinations for a winter sun break, thanks to the lack of rainfall and ‘paradise’ beaches which can be an ideal spot for a scenic stroll.

Of course you won’t get the vibrant nightlife that comes with the peak season crowds, and some of the bars and tavernas may be closed for the season, but there’s still heaps to see and do on the island, from hiking trails to museums and attractions such as its world-famous windmills, without needing to jostle through crowds of tourists for the best views.

Plus as the streets are empty, there’s ample opportunity to enjoy those cobbled streets you’ve seen all over your social media feeds, including those white-washed buildings and blue windows and doors, again without having to fight crowds just to get a photo.

Oh, and those sunsets remain just as spectacular even if they are a little earlier in the evening!

A recent study from the team at Ferryhopper looked at the warmest winter sun destinations, across factors such as the average temperature, average daylight house and hotel prices during the winter months. Mykonos came out as the top Greek destination, taking eighth spot in the top 10 rankings.

There are plenty of direct flights from the UK to Mykonos, with airlines including easyJet and British Airways. In terms of prices, when we took a look on Skyscanner we found return fares from around £110 during the winter months.

It wasn’t just Mykonos which impressed in the rankings. When it came to Greek destinations, Santorini was another island tipped to be a must-visit for Brits who want to enjoy a break where the weather won’t always be dreary and rainy. Again thanks to the lack of tourist crowds during this season, you might be able to get unrivalled views of the island’s world-famous white-washed, blue domed buildings, not to mention some epic viewing spots for those sunsets.

‘Sleek’ gadget from Amazon ‘reduces humidity in half an hour’ to prevent damp and mould

Amazon has slashed the price of a dehumidifier we tested, which also has hundreds of five-star reviews.

The Devola 12L/day Low Energy Dehumidifier has been slashed from £139.99 to £124.99, saving £15 off.

As temperatures drop, the contrast in indoor and outdoor temperatures often causes unwanted condensation.

Most often appearing as dripping water on windows, damp weather can also cause damage to walls, especially if it’s left to build up.

Dehumidifiers have been designed to tackle the problem, but are also a preventative measure for stopping damp in its tracks.

The Devola 12L/day Low Energy Dehumidifier is a mid-range option, which featured in our best dehumidifiers round-up.

We gave the gadget a high rating of 4.5/5, especially for how quickly it worked: ‘’it reduced the humidity from well over 70% (classed as “too high”) to under 60% (classed as “okay”) in under half an hour.’’

The 12-litre capacity is ideal for small to medium-sized rooms, but there are 20L and 25L options for larger or open plan spaces.

Like all dehumidifiers, the Amazon model pulls in humid air, cools it, and it’s then collected as water, which can be emptied.

One of the most handy uses for a dehumidifier in the colder months is to dry laundry.

As it can reduce moisture, placing it beside a drying rack is great for speeding up the time it takes to dry – and the laundry mode is an easy way to do it.

According to Amazon, it costs around 5p per hour to run, which would likely make it cheaper to run than a tumble dryer – which is a very costly appliance to run.

Amazon shoppers are praising the dehumidifier, and with over 800 people already having bought it, now’s a good time to invest ahead of winter.

One shopper said: ‘’Amazing!

‘’I have a basement flat and you can tell the difference it has made in just a week.

‘’No more damp smell.

‘’Very good at drying clothes too.’’

Another shopper commented: ‘’This has transformed the way I dry my washing, wish I had bought one years ago.

‘’Speeds up dry time and stops the house being full of condensation.

‘’Not too big, sits in the corner of the room, not noisy, cheap to run.’’

Jurassic Park IRL? Robot dinosaurs will invade South Coast Botanic Garden

The dinosaurs are coming this holiday season. The South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates will host “Dinosaurs Around the World,” bringing 13 lifelike animatronic figures to the green space.

Running Nov. 1 to Jan. 31, the exhibit will feature a broad array of reptiles, ranging from the 6-foot-long Australovenator to a nearly 30-foot-long Tyrannosaurus rex. Guests can see the dinosaurs on two walking trails. One is a short loop designed primarily for young children, which will feature a little more than half of the dinosaurs, while the other is a full jaunt around the garden.

All the dinosaurs will move, some will roar and none will bite.

On weekends, South Coast will run a separately ticketed, eight-passenger tram dubbed the “Pangaea Express” that will include a tour of the exhibit with dinosaur and garden facts. The goal, in part, is to highlight the so-called “living fossils” of the South Coast Botanic Gardens.

“Specifically, we have a Dawn Redwood that we’re going to be talking about a bit,” says Claire Griswold, the garden’s learning and engagement manager. “We have a really great collection of Ginkgo trees as well, and Sago palm cycads.” A living fossil is a term for a species that was once known only from its fossil record and was later discovered in living form, apparently preserving the physical features from long-gone ancestors.

“Dinosaurs Around the World” is a touring exhibit from creative experiential firm Imagine Exhibitions. It was developed in conjunction with paleontologist Gregory M. Erickson, currently a member of the faculty of Florida State University.

Griswold hopes the exhibit is a way to marry some of the wonder and technology of a theme park with the natural awe of an 87-acre botanical garden.

“Whether or not you learn something, you still get to have a great experience in nature and do something outside of the ordinary,” Griswold says. “And what’s more fun than dinosaurs, really?”

The Los Angeles area is blessed with numerous gardens that will host seasonal events this fall and winter. Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, for instance, will be bringing back its Halloween-focused Carved, while the Huntington in San Marino will host its otherworldly-focused Strange Science for a weekend in late October.

Pencil skirts are back but this season’s twist on the trend will stop you looking like Nessa from Gavin and Stacey

THE last time I wore a pencil skirt, my brother affectionately told me I looked like Nessa Jenkins from Gavin & Stacey.

Brotherly love — always there to keep your feet firmly on the ground.

Get the look wrong, though, and you will end up looking like Nessa from Gavin & StaceyCredit: BBC

But, sadly, he was right.

My black, knee-length leather skirt and then short brown hair did make me look like the Welsh slot machine worker, minus the tattoos

Despite my affection for the show and actress Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa, the comment was enough to put me off that look for life.

Nessa is not exactly known for her chic style.

Now, as trends for autumn/winter start to appear, I’ve spotted that curve-clinging pencil skirts are back — from Gucci and Givenchy to high-street favourites Zara and Mango.

And now I’m wondering, has the time come to give the style another whirl?

There was a 12,000 per cent increase in searches on shopping site LTK for “pencil skirts” following the autumn/winter 2025 fashion weeks earlier this year.

This thirst for a more slimline look tells us one thing, if nothing else — many of us, myself included, want to jump off the conveyor belt of loose midi and maxi styles.

Five years on from lockdowns, we’re ready for a bit of wiggle. We want to get dressed up!.

Now, I’m not for one minute suggesting we revert back to peak Noughties pencil skirt trends, when going “out out” was all about looking like a sexy businesswoman.

But there was a time before this when the pencil skirt was stylish and classy.

Starlets like Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe were big fans of the style, which became hugely popular in the late Fifties, with tucked in blouses and knits to show off their waist and bust.

As Marilyn tottered along the train platform in Some Like It Hot, the tight-fitting style may well have played a part in her trademark wiggle walk.

In the Eighties, pencil skirts were paired with shoulder-padded blazers. Women were making moves in boardrooms and this was power-dressing at its best. Think Melanie Griffith in Working Girl and Joan Collins in Dynasty.

Over the next few decades, the pencil skirt became a workwear uniform.

But recently, aside from wives of world leaders such as Melania Trump or contestants on The Apprentice, it has disappeared from our office attire.

Especially since Covid, you are more likely to wear flats and comfy trousers than a restrictive, uncomfortable and somewhat dated knee-length skirt.

It seems, though, that we have now come full circle. As well as the designers’ offerings, we’ve seen a pregnant Rihanna wear a pencil skirt to a pre-Met Gala bash.

I am convinced that there’s a way to wear this season’s wiggle skirts without looking like a string of sausages

We’ll also see the pencil return to screens this season as Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts and Niecy Nash-Betts star as outrageously fierce and successful lawyers in Disney’s legal drama All’s Fair later on this year.

But after enjoying years of elastic waistbands and roomy skirts, are the rest of us now ready to squeeze into a tummy-sucking number?

Personally, I’ll never get back into a black pleather version again.

I can’t shake my Nessa past and rarely get dolled up enough to dust off my peplum and six-inch heels.

But looking at the styles around on the high street, I am convinced that there’s a way to wear this season’s wiggle skirts without looking like a string of sausages.

The faux-leather options out there are looser and more flattering, and they come in a range of colours.

There are also cosy knitted versions or softer viscose numbers with bold patterns.

I like the idea of wearing one with an oversized blazer and knee-high boots to the office in the autumn, to sharpen up my workwear.

For drinks, I might even plump for a faux-leather number in sage or burgundy, with heels.

But for the majority of the week, I will be sticking with my favourite flats.

And I’m sorry, but you just can’t do a pencil skirt with ballet pumps or brogues without looking like a wally.
