Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has not been named in Graham Potter’s first Sweden squad, but Liverpool’s Alexander Isak has been included.

Gyokeres is set to have further tests this week amid fears he sustained a hamstring injury during the Gunners’ Premier League win at Burnley on Saturday.

The 27-year-old missed Arsenal’s Champions League win against Slavia Prague on Tuesday.

Isak, who has not played for the Reds since 22 October because of a groin problem, has been selected for the World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland (15 November) and Slovenia (18 November).

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who is recovering from concussion, and Newcastle winger Anthony Elanga are among the England-based players named by former Brighton, Chelsea and West Ham boss Potter.

There is never a bad time for a striker to score, but Viktor Gyokeres’ relief was obvious as he ended a barren run with two goals in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid. It can be the start of a prolific spell, manager Mikel Arteta believes.

After three goals in his first four matches, £64m signing Gyokeres failed to find the net in Arsenal’s next seven games and looked visibly frustrated at times.

But his team-mates continued to praise his overall impact and Arteta said he gave the striker a hug after Arsenal’s 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday in appreciation for the effort he was putting in.

The 27-year-old has had to play more than was planned at this stage of the season because of a knee injury to Kai Havertz, featuring for 90 minutes seven times in Arsenal’s opening 12 matches.

But after finding his clinical touch again in the thumping win over Atletico on Tuesday, Gyokeres’ tally now stands at five goals in 12 matches and his manager thinks the strikes were reward for his persistence.

“He deserved it because everything that we were seeing in terms of what he was bringing to the team and how much he was helping the team in many areas, apart from scoring goals in the last few weeks, there was no debate about that,” said Arteta.

“It was about keeping that belief in himself, that emotional state that he can enjoy and play freely.

“I think he has certainly done that today, [he had] a big smile on his face.

“Look at his team-mates as well, in the picture and the video, they are all so happy for him because he fully deserves it.”

US captain Keegan Bradley put English’s name in the envelope in case of injury to a European player.

When the draw for the singles came out following play on Saturday, English and Hovland were paired in the 12th match.

Hovland’s issue flared up following his Saturday morning foursomes victory alongside Robert MacIntyre against Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley.

Scheduled to play with Matt Fitzpatrick in the afternoon fourballs, Hovland was replaced by Tyrrell Hatton.

Hovland, who said he has “had some issues with a neck injury on and off for the last two months”, had an MRI scan on Saturday evening.

This is the third time the envelope rule has been used since it was introduced in 1979.

In 1991 American Steve Pate was injured in a car crash before the Ryder Cup started, and in 1993 Europe’s Sam Torrance could not play on the Sunday because of an infected toe.

CHELSEA are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon striker Conrad Harder, according to reports.

The Blues could re-enter the transfer market for a forward following the injury suffered by Liam Delap against Fulham on Saturday.

Enzo Maresca’s side were on the brink of loaning Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich, having deemed the 24-year-old to be surplus to requirements.

Jackson was allowed to travel to Germany for a medical yesterday, only for Chelsea to pull the plug on the deal upon Delap’s injury.

It was the last opportunity for the striker and the club’s other new signings to impress the fans before the season starts.

And Gyokeres, 27, made his mark on the game as he scored the opening goal at the Emirates.

It would have been a relief for the Swede to see the net bulge as he had squandered chances beforehand.

Arsenal‘s second came just moments later after a brilliant passage move led to Bukayo Saka tapping into an empty net.

The only thing is that the Gunners’ players will be hoping the Emirates Cup is not the only trophy they lift this season.

In the irrelevant penalty shootout after the game Adama Boiro missed the crucial spotkick as Arsenal won that too.

A comfortable outing for the goalkeeper, who had little to do but dealt with what did come his way.

Made a key save in the shootout and went the right way for a lot of them.

Riccardo Calafiori 45′ – 4

Almost gifted Bilbao the lead in the 16th minute as his weak pass in the Arsenal box was cut out by Íñigo Ruiz de Galarreta – who was denied by Raya.

Going forward, he blazed over from the edge of the box after being presented with a great opportunity when the game was goalless.

Was subbed off at half time for Ben White.

William Saliba – 6

Like Raya, was a reasonably quiet game for the centre-back with little threat coming from Bilbao.

The Frenchman will be hoping for a similar requirement when Arsenal face Manchester United next Sunday.

Took a brilliant penalty in the shootout.

Gabriel Magalhaes 62′ – 6

Gabriel was the other beneficiary of an easy time on the pitch as the Gunners maintained a lot of control of the ball.

But for the Brazilian is more important to have minutes in the legs after he made his return from injury.

Jurrien Timber 62′ – 6

Made sure he was getting forward to support the attacks early on.

Looked like he picked up a knock after one burst up the pitch but was able to soldier on.

Martin Zubimendi – 7

Fairly quiet game from the Spanish midfielder, which is what can be expected from him.

The former Real Sociedad man is there to do the dirty work and offload the ball and he managed to do that.

He did show one brilliant bit of quality as his whipped cross was on a dime for Gyokeres’ goal.

Converted the winning penalty in the shootout.

Helped maintain the pace of the game from midfield with his passing and linking of the play.

A perfectly acceptable performance but not as impressive as Zubimendi.

He lacked cutting edge at times as the Gunners could have had even more.

Looked dangerous from the start and almost put the hosts ahead after a good move as he was only denied by Unai Simon.

Was in the right place at the right time to slot home the second into an empty net.

Hit the bottom corner with his penalty.

Wasted a good chance in the opening exchanges as he fired wide after picking up a loose ball from the Bilbao defence.

Showed his quick thinking to perfectly lay off the ball for Saka to double the lead.

Mikel Arteta sacraficed the winger at half time to give more minutes to Noni Madueke.

It looked to be a frustrating afternoon for the striker as he fluffed his lines on a couple of early chances.

But it was a case of third time lucky as he fantastically headed past Simon for the opener.

Following the goal, Gyokeres was clearly more confident as his link-up play was much improved.

He almost made it two for himself after the hour mark but this header was denied by the post.

VIKTOR GYOKERES is wearing the No14 shirt made famous by Thierry Henry and the Swede is also looking to become an Arsenal legend.

Unfortunately for the club’s big summer signing, he had just 14 touches on his Emirates debut before being replaced in the 62nd minute, so this will not be a night he looks back with fondness.

Not that it really matters, obviously.

If Viktor Gyokeres fires the goals to end Arsenal’s role as permanent Premier League bridesmaids to clinch the title, and there is no reason why he cannot, the Swede will be forgiven if he takes time to adjust in north London.

On the night all eyes were on the new arrival from Sporting Lisbon, absolutely no-one had taken any notice of Villarreal’s Nicolas Pepe.

So while we all expected an expensive signing by Arsenal to score, you would not have had any money on it being £72m Arsenal flop Pepe.

Villarreal’s Ivory Coast international scored the first goal and Karl Etta Eyong made it 2-0 before new arrival Christian Norgaard scored with a header.

Yet while we have spent the last few weeks talking about the need of a top striker, Mikel Arteta’s team will have to defend better than this, and sub Arnaut Danjuma made it 3-1 before Martin Odegaard pulled one back from the penalty spot.

Villarreal then won a penalty shoot-out 4-3 with another new arrival, Noni Madueke, missing the decisive spot-kick.

Gyokeres, who cost £8.5million less than Pepe, made his club debut as a 77th minute substitute against Spurs in Hong Kong but was given a heroes’ welcome at a packed Emirates.

If Arsenal are to get the best out of their new all-singing, all-dancing goal machine, they will have to give him more ammunition.

Equally, Gyokeres did not have a proper pre-season as he barely trained in Lisbon.

He will soon be in better shape and has another run-out on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao.

Gyokeres tried to score his first goal in spectacular style but failed to connect with an attempted bicycle kick from Bukayo Saka’s cross and he had few other chances.

In terms of the way he moves and the fact has blonde hair, it was a bit like having Nicklas Bendtner back at the Emirates although it is safe to say Gyokeres will do a bit better than the cocky Dane.

Arteta also gave second half Emirates debuts to Christhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and Madueke. 

Yet the comedy moment of the night was Pepe opening the scoring from close range and then refusing to celebrate.

Pepe arrived from Lille for that massive amount in 2019 and scored just 27 goals in 112 appearances before joining Trabzonspor on a free transfer in 2023.

Many Arsenal fans probably did not realise that Pepe was even playing in this fixture although there was a mixture of jeers and applause when his name was read out after scoring.

Etta Eyong scored at the far post for 2-0 before former Brentford captain Norgaard pulled one back with a far post header before the break.

The biggest roar of the night came just after the hour when 15-year-old Max Dowman was unleashed.

Villarreal caught Arsenal on the break with former Bournemouth forward Danjuma making it 3-1 before Dowman won a penalty and Odegaard, who replaced Gyokeres, got Arsenal’s second.

There was still a shoot-out although Madueke saw his shot saved with one fan shouting: “send him back to Chelsea.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal – yet again – have fitness concerns.

Both defender Riccardo Calafiori, who suffered an injury on the tour, along with Kai Havertz, were missing from the squad.

The Swedish striker joins the London club after scoring 97 goals for Sporting Lisbon over the past two seasons.

Arsenal have signed Sweden forward Viktor Gyokeres, bringing an end to the Premier League club’s years-long search for a prolific goalscorer.

Gyokeres completed a move from Sporting Lisbon on Saturday worth a reported 63 million pounds ($85m) and signed a five-year contract.

“Viktor is an exceptional talent and has consistently demonstrated he has the qualities and winning mentality required of a top-level centre-forward. His physicality, intelligence and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our vision,” said Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta.

The 27-year-old striker joins Arsenal after establishing himself after two outstanding seasons in Portugal, in which he fired Lisbon to back-to-back league titles with 97 goals, including 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 season, outscoring the likes of superstars Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.

A top-class striker has long been considered the missing element for Arsenal, which came runner-up in each of the last three Premier League seasons. The failure to bring one in during the January transfer window badly undermined its attempts to challenge Liverpool for the title last term.

“The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves,” said manager Mikel Arteta. “He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels.”

Gyokeres returns to England after joining Brighton as a youth player and later emerging at second-tier Coventry, where his 22 goals helped the team reach the playoff final in 2023.

His record of 40 goals in 97 games for Coventry caught the attention of Lisbon and led to a 20.5 million pounds ($25m) move to the Portuguese club.

His explosive form over the past two seasons has seen frequent speculation about a move to one of European football’s giants, including Manchester United. But Arsenal has won the race for his signature, and the transfer represents a remarkable rise for a player who was first developed at Brommapojkarna, a Swedish club with a reputation for guiding the careers of some of the country’s best emerging talents.

“He was a late developer because he was not the best striker or the best player in Brommapojkarna at age 16, 17, 18, 19,” Dalibor Savic, his former youth coach at the Swedish club, told The Associated Press in November. “If he aims at something, he will achieve it.”

Gyokeres will have to prove he can make the step up to the Premier League after failing to break through at Brighton, a club known for unearthing players like Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister in recent years. He only made eight appearances for the club and was loaned to St Pauli in Germany and Swansea before his permanent move to Coventry.

His performances for Sweden and in the Champions League suggest he will be able to continue that form at Arsenal.

He was the leading scorer in the Nations League, with nine goals, outscoring Cristiano Ronaldo and Haaland, and hit six in eight appearances in the Champions League for Lisbon last season.

Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres is facing disciplinary action by his club Sporting after failing to report for pre-season training, says the Portuguese club’s president Frederico Varandas.

Varandas added that any potential transfer was now becoming “more complicated”.

BBC Sport reported last week that Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta held face-to-face talks with Sweden international Gyokeres in Portugal.

Sources have told BBC Sport that talks are ongoing with Arsenal, who are still hopeful of striking a deal, with their most recent proposal for the 27-year-old totalling about 70m euros (£60m) including add-ons.

Last month Sporting president Varandas said there was no ‘gentleman’s agreement’ for Gyokeres to leave for 70m euros but added that the club would not demand his full release clause of 100m euros (£85m).

Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals in 52 games last season, has yet to publicly explain why he has not turned up for pre-season.

Varandas told Portuguese news agency Lusa that “no one is above the interests of the club”.

“We’re calm. Everything can be solved with the closure of the market, a hefty fine and an apology to the group,” Varandas said.

“If they don’t want to pay Viktor’s fair market value, we’ll be very comfortable with that for the next three years.

“If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to make it easier for him to leave, not only are they completely wrong, but they are also making it more complicated for the player to leave.”

Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 matches during his two seasons in Portugal, firing Sporting to two league titles.

ARSENAL are close to securing the long-awaited signing of Viktor Gyokeres.

The Gunners have been desperate for a centre-forward and now appear set to get their man.
