Celebrity Traitors stars set for double plot twist in penultimate episode

The Faithfuls have finally banished a Traitor, as Jonathan Ross was voted out – but the twists aren’t over as the Celebrity Traitors finale draws near

The Celebrity Traitors has been packed with twists and turns so far, and though the show is nearing its end, those plot twists are far from over. A dramatic double twist has already been revealed for the penultimate episode.

The hit BBC series is set to conclude on 6 November. Ahead of that episode, Claudia Winkleman revealed two twists that would shake things up for the celebs. It comes just after the Faithfuls finally managed to nab a Traitor and sent Jonathan Ross home.

As the Faithfuls celebrated their victory, Claudia rained on their parade by revealing that, at the next roundtable, banished players would not tell the remaining group if they were Faithful or a Traitor. “After tomorrow, the banished players will not reveal their true identity,” Claudia warned.

This is not the only twist. Claudia also revealed to the remaining Traitors, Alan Carr and Cat Burns, that they had to murder in plain sight that evening. In letters read by each deceitful player, Claudia said: “Traitors, tonight there will be no secret meeting in the turret. Instead you must murder in plain sight at tonight’s dinner.

“To do this one Traitor must toast the player you want to murder while saying the words ‘Parting is such sweet sorrow’ followed by their name. You must do this before the night is over.”

Alan has already killed in plain sight, having murdered his friend Paloma Faith by touching her face after touching a ‘poisoned’ plant. In a quiet discussion, Cat and Alan agreed that he would be the one to kill again, as Cat wasn’t very convincing when she tried to say it.

Cat suggested that Alan pretend to quote recently banished Stephen Fry whilst delivering the phrase, which is from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

In an aside, Alan joked that he always had to do the Traitors “dirty work”. He said: “I have to do all the dirty work for these traitors. I’m surprised they don’t have me up in that turret with a hoover doing some light dusting. Why is it always me?”

The episode also saw Jonathan Ross head home. He was the first Traitor caught on the show and was voted out by six people, including both Cat and Alan. In fact, all bar two people voted for Jonathan, with the outliers being him and David Olusoga. David voted for Nick Mohammed.

Jonathan’s exit speech, dubbed “ridiculous” by Joe Marler, kept the other Faithfuls on their toes. He said: “I’ve got no idea what everyone is doing wrong.

“I cannot believe you’ve done it again. I can’t believe I’m standing here for no good reason so I don’t want to be rude but you’re idiots. But I am not judging because it’s fiendish.

“I’m not blaming the players, I’m blaming the game. I am now and have always been throughout the game completely faithful… to the Traitors!”

Vera’s Brenda Blethyn looks completely different in ‘shocking’ film with ‘violent’ twist

Brenda Blethyn stars in the upcoming drama film Dragonfly, which has been described as “shocking” and “violent” by critics

The latest trailer for Brenda Blethyn‘s “shocking” drama Dragonfly has just dropped and it’s already proving a massive hit with audiences after scoring 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film also features Andrea Riseborough and Jason Watkins, with the storyline centring around Coleen (Riseborough) who becomes horrified by the treatment her elderly neighbour Elsie (Blethyn) is enduring, prompting her to volunteer her assistance without charge.

Nevertheless, the synopsis suggests that Colleen’s motives might not be quite what they seem. As suspicions mount, a devastating incident triggers a brutal chain of events that could irreversibly transform both women’s existence.

The trailer opens with Elsie recognising that looking after someone is “a lot of hard work” after Colleen volunteers her assistance. Colleen insists that it’s what neighbours are “supposed to do”, but the trailer swiftly shifts into darker territory as Elsie looks petrified by a telephone ringing in her house, and Colleen’s true intentions come under scrutiny from Elsie’s son (Watkins).

“I’ve been hurting all my life, Elsie, to be honest,” Colleen confesses, as we witness her menacingly observing Elsie through a glass panel in her front door, reports Chronicle Live.

Following its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, Dragonfly currently boasts a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In our critique, we called the film “a powerful and compelling drama that explores those that society shuns, building to an ending you won’t forget”.

The Hollywood Reporter penned: “Is this tonal swerve a little gimmicky? Probably, and the film will not be to everyone’s taste. But it is a skillfully rendered exercise in terror.”

ScreenAnarchy remarked: “While cinema in general still tends to romanticise loneliness, Dragonfly shows it for what it is: a routine series of everyday, excruciating experiences that always build up to something that tends to be horrific, more often than not.”

The Guardian lauded it as “a stark, fierce, wonderfully acted film”, while Culture Mix observed: “Dragonfly isn’t just a ‘slow burn’ psychological drama.

“This well-acted movie about two lonely people and home caregiving takes an extreme turn in the last 20 minutes to a shocking ending that’s sure to be divisive.”

Last year, Blethyn spoke candidly about securing the role in the film after wrapping up Vera, reminiscing at the British Film Institute: “I was home, I hadn’t even unpacked my bag, and my agent called me and said, ‘Oh, you’ve been offered a film.’ I said, ‘I don’t want to do a film. I haven’t unpacked yet.'”.

“She said, ‘Oh, it is with Andrea Riseborough.’ I said, ‘Oh, is it?’ And she said, ‘And it starts next week because somebody had dropped out and it’s written and directed by Paul Andrew Williams.'”.

“I said, ‘Oh, well, I better have a little read of it just to… but no, I’m not doing it, but I’ll have a read of it.’ And I liked it, so I did it.”

Dragonfly premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in June 2025. A cinema release date is yet to be announced

Doc Martin star Martin Clunes returns three years after exit – but there’s a twist

Martin Clunes is making an unlikely return to the Doc Martin universe – three years after the ITV drama ended with fans devastated over the news

Martin Clunes is making an unlikely return to the Doc Martin universe. The actor, 63, played Doc Martin in the ITV show from 2004 and 2022, where he starred as the rather awkward GP of a small British village.

The show wrapped in 2022, with fans up and down the country devastated. At the time, ahead of the UK show’s final season, Martin and Philippa Braithwaite released a joint statement, which read: “We have loved making nine series of Doc Martin.

“When we launched the series in 2004 we could never have imagined how much our loyal viewers would take to the grumpy Doc like they have. The series has avid fans both in the UK and throughout the world and we are thrilled that Doc Martin has topped the ratings every time. However, after sixteen years we now feel that the time has come to say goodbye to Portwenn.

“We will be making the tenth and final series in 2021 and we are very much looking forward to returning to Cornwall to film it.”

At the time, Martin insisted there was no bad ratings that caused the end of the series – but they just felt it was time.

He said: “All good things have to come to an end. And I’m sure there are lots of people who aren’t fans of the show who think it’s terribly repetitive anyway, but we’re at huge pains not to repeat ourselves. I just think we’ve sort of done everything. I mean, it would be so great to just sort of carry on, but I don’t think we can keep it as good.”

However, Martin is back in the world of Port Wenn once more – but in a very different capacity. Martin will be returning to the show as the father of Dr Martin Best is the United States reboot of the show, titled Best Medicine.

Josh Charles, 54, will star as Dr Martin, who has left his career as a surgeon in Boston and heads to the East Coast fishing village of Port Wenn, but with a few secrets up his sleeve. Martin’s wife Philippa Braithwaite will also serve as executive producer on the new show.

The synopsis for Best Medicine teases drama ahead, as it reads: “A brilliant surgeon leaves Boston to become a small-town doctor where he spent childhood summers. Despite his medical skills, his rude manner alienates locals as he battles hidden phobias and struggles with personal connections.”

BBC Dragons’ Dens star confirms ‘exciting’ twist that has ‘never been done before’

Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies recently announced that she will be stepping away from the BBC show

Dragons’ Den favourite Sara Davies has dropped hints about an “exciting” twist that’s never been witnessed before as she prepares for her departure.

The businesswoman, 40, first entered the Den in 2019 and during her time she has helped a range of entrepreneurs with her expertise.

The TV personality has now revealed she’ll be ‘stepping back’ from the BBC programme to concentrate on her own enterprise.

Before her poignant farewell, Sara graced Tuesday’s (October 14) instalment of BBC The One Show with presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp.

Roman was eager to discover more about her final series as he hinted at a ‘remarkable’ scene that’s still to be broadcast, reports the Express.

The television host continued: “There is a very special moment this week as part of Dragons’ Den history. What can you tell us because I know you can’t say much.”

Sara began by revealing: “I don’t want to give too much away but there was a moment that happened in filming last year, which is what you will see this Thursday on Dragons’ Den between Steven (Bartlett) and I.”

The personality hinted: “We do something that has never ever happened in the Den before and as a result of that something pretty exciting happens and let me just tell you it’s a pretty good business. You’ll love it.”

Dragons’ Den viewers will witness the extraordinary moment unfold on Thursday’s (October 16) show and judging by Sara’s teaser, it’ll be utterly unforgettable. This follows Sara’s confirmation in an Instagram statement that she had “taken the decision to step away from the Den for now, to focus on my own business” – a crafting enterprise she established in 2005.

She will continue to feature in the latter half of the current series and judging by her statement’s phrasing, there remains potential for her comeback down the line.

The BBC is yet to reveal her replacement.

In her social media post, Sarah declared: “As this last run of Dragons’ comes to an end I have to say I’ve loved every minute of this series so far and I’m so proud of the businesses I’ve invested in this year!”.

“As a lot of you will know, I’ve taken up my position again as CEO of Crafter’s Companion and my business is my big priority this year. And when I commit to a business, I really commit, which is why I find Dragons’ Den such a rewarding role.

“As well as filming an incredible show, being a Dragon requires so much dedication and time behind the scenes as you join the life of each business you invest in.

“It means seeing through your investment and committing to your part in that organisation. It’s so much more than a TV show. That’s why taken the decision to step away from the Den for now, to focus on my own business, which was my first baby! So I won’t be filming with the team this year for the next series.”

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer and Dragons’ Den is available to watch on BBC iPlayer

Big Brother fans ‘work out’ which iconic housemate is returning in game-changing twist

Big Brother’s AJ and Will announced the biggest game changing twist yet, as they revealed two new arrivals will be entering the house in a game changing twist

Tonight, the Big Brother house saw it’s second live eviction as Cameron B was evicted. However, it wasn’t the only huge event tonight, as AJ Odudu and Will Best announced at the start of the live show that Big Brother would see yet another huge twist.

The 25th anniversary show started off with a bang, as the evil eyes continue to cause chaos around the house. The first shock twist came during launch night when Emily was the first housemate to be evicted in a short but sweet stay.

Now, AJ and Will have made the shock announcement that the show will gain two new arrivals next Friday – but they’re not any old arrivals.

READ MORE: Big Brother announces major vote shake-up as George removed for ‘unacceptable behaviour’READ MORE: Four Big Brother housemates face eviction as brutal ‘face-to-face’ nominations turn sour

In fact, Will and AJ announced that the two new arrivals were people that had left the Big Brother house too soon – but who will they be?

They won’t be alone, as one current housemate will be with them. On Big Brother’s Late and Live tonight, Will and AJ announced housemates would be nominating on Monday. Housemates will believe viewers are voting to evict – but the evicted housemate won’t leave.

Instead they’ll be whisked away to a secret room with the two former housemates. But who will they be?

Tonight, Will gave away a huge clue, revealing that the housemates are one’s that “left too soon.”

While many think Emily from this series are returning, others are convinced Farida Khalifa from ITV’s first series in 2023, will be returning. Farida was the first housemate to be evicted, with many fuming with her early departure.

But could it be her time to return? Fans think so. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one penned: “I’m glad to see i’m not the only one who INSTANTLY thought of farida when they said gone too soon housemates were returning”.

Another agreed: “Omg the fact that godly Farida may be reentering the Big Brother house!!” while a third said: “Farida’s last TikTok was September 24th… get her back in!”

The announcement came after Cameron B was the third housemate to be evicted from the 2025 series – and the fourth to leave.

Despite being the third to be evicted, Cameron was the first to leave through the front door. Last week, Gani was forced to have a back door eviction due to Storm Amy, and Emily left through the back door on the first night.

Big Brother hosts AJ and Will reveal HUGE new twist after announcing fourth evicted housemate

BIG Brother hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best have revealed a HUGE new twist that will see two familiar faces return.

On tonight’s show, Cameron B became the fourth housemate to be booted out of the house following a public eviction.

So far ITV2 viewers have said goodbye to Emily Hewertson, who was in the house for a few hours, and Gani Khan, who became the second housemate to be evicted last Friday.

And earlier this week, ITV bosses made the decision to axe George following “inappropriate behaviour and language”.

But now Big Brother has decided to bring back not one but TWO former housemates to shake things up.

After Cameron’s eviction, Will told viewers: “Now it’s finally time to reveal next week’s game-changing twist.”

AJ said: “Next Friday, two more late arrivals will go into the Big Brother house and they’re not just any late arrivals.”

Will explained: “Two former housemates who may have gone too soon will be going back through those doors.

“So make sure you watch tonight’s Big Brother Late and Live because we’re going to have all the info.”

Kicking things off on the after show, Will said: “What a night we’ve had so far. Three housemates face eviction and two former housemates are going back in next week.”

Big Brother fans raced to Twitter with their predictions.

One wrote: “EMILY AND GANI RETURN?!!!”

Big Brother’s fourth evicted housemate revealed just days after George’s shock exit

A second posted: “My theory on the bigggg twist is 4 out 4 in like in Timebomb series of Big Brother where one of Emily or Gani return.”

The 25-year-old Bolton lad Cameron B entered the House on Day Two, alongside three other newcomers.

Axed star George Gilbert, 23, had also been on the chopping block before his shock exit.

BOOTED OFF

The Sun revealed how the parish councillor was removed after ‘unacceptable language and behaviour’.

Sources told The Sun that George left his co-stars horrified after making offensive comments which could be interpreted as antisemitic and was immediately called to the Diary Room and ejected from the house.

“Everyone was absolutely disgusted,” an insider said.

“Nobody could believe what he said – he was clearly out to shock people.”

Since leaving the house, George has said: “As a flag bearer of freedom of speech I never hesitate to discuss and question any topic regardless of how contentious it may be.

“Sadly, the boundaries of what is deemed offensive are subjective and I evidently went too far this time by crossing their line one too many times.”

He added: “It is a shame that specific debate could not be had and that it has had to end like this.

“Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me.”

George has since made a return to social media following his departure from Big Brother.

The ex-housemate has since updated the privacy settings on his Instagram account to allow it to be public.

A previous brutal twist saw housemate Emily Hewertson evicted on the very first night.

The political events manager shot to fame last June when she was falsely accused of flinging a milkshake over Nigel Farage in Clacton-on-Sea.

ITV Frauds viewers say ‘I want it to be wrong’ as they predict major twist

Frauds viewers were left divided on Monday night as the second instalment of the ITV drama aired, with some fans convinced they’ve already worked out a major twist.

Viewers on ITV were left torn on Monday night as the second episode of Frauds aired.

The gripping new six-part drama, filmed in gorgeous Spanish locations, revolves around two con women named Bert (Suranne Jones) and Sam (Jodie Whittaker) who plan to pull off the heist of the century.

Bert, fresh out of prison after a 10-year stint and facing a terminal cancer diagnosis, wants to carry out one last job with her mate.

She also reveals her desire for revenge on her former cellmate by taking on the job that was initially intended for her. Despite initial hesitation from Sam, who has turned her life around during Bert’s incarceration, she is soon persuaded.

This leads the toxic duo to assemble a highly-skilled team of accomplices to execute their mission: stealing a Salvador Dalí painting, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Part of their scheme involves recruiting a master painter and forger named Bilal (Karan Gill) to create a replica of the artwork for them to switch it with.

What Bert and Sam are unaware of, however, is that Bilal is indebted to some very dangerous individuals who are determined to find him, a plot point revealed in the episode.

As the programme progressed, revealing more about their complex relationship, viewers were quick to voice their opinions on the show, with some doubting Bert’s honesty.

One viewer speculated: “My theory is that Bert is gonna set Sam up for this because the real revenge she wants is against Sam because she didn’t serve any time and she didn’t visit her and I want it to be wrong so bad!”

Echoing this, another added: “That’s my thinking too so far. I’m just hoping that, if that is her plan, spending time with Sam again will make her change her mind at the last minute.”

A different fan chimed in: “Sam and Bert are conning each other, right?!”, while another queried: “Is the plot of #Frauds that SJ isn’t really dying and she’s saying she is to lure JW into a big job, and then she’ll let her take the rap as revenge? Or is there going to be something more to it?”

Another viewer questioned: “She hasn’t really got cancer, right?!” This was followed by another comment: “Bet she hasn’t got Cancer. Fraud.”

During the episode, viewers watched Bilal in a state of panic when he received a video call from his mum, who was at home with the men he owes money to, indicating they could easily harm her unless they get what they want.

Bert and Sam’s friendship also hit a rocky patch when Sam found out Bert had secretly been in contact with her daughter, whom she gave up for adoption at birth.

The teaser for episode three suggests more drama is on the horizon, stating: “With Sam reeling and Bert desperately trying to keep control, the heist is thrown off track when trouble from home catches up with Bilal.”

Frauds is available to watch on ITVX.

Big Brother’s Will Best ‘lets slip’ cruel eviction twist live on air

During last night’s launch, Big Brother revealed the ‘cruellest twist yet’ as we learnt one housemate would go during the first episode – as Will Best ‘lets slip’ a huge spoiler

Last night, Big Brother opened with one of the cruellest twists yet, as it was revealed by AJ Odudu and Will Best that one housemate would be leaving on the first night.

When all 12 housemates had entered the house, it was revealed that viewers had just four minutes to cast their votes for who they wanted to put up for eviction.

It was later revealed that 25-year-old political events organiser Emily, Zumba instructor Sam, 22, and PR worker Caroline, 56 were facing eviction as they were placed into a room away from the rest of the housemates. It also meant that those watching the live stream wouldn’t be able to see who’s left before tonight’s show.

READ MORE: Big Brother favourite element axed as ‘horrible’ twist airs in show firstREAD MORE: Big Brother fans slam ‘brutal’ format change just minutes into live launch show

Many assumed that the housemate with the least amount of votes would be evicted, however, on Big Brother Late and Live, it was revealed that they would have to fight amongst themselves on who would go.

The announcement was made on Big Brother’s Late and Live after the launch show, but many viewers thought this twist was ‘let slip’ accidentally by host Will Best.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter when the announcement was made, one penned: “Will seems to have just (accidentally?) confirmed on #BBLL that Emily, Caroline and Sam will have to decide amongst themselves WHO gets evicted tonight! #BBUK

Another wrote: “WILL JUST LET SLIP ANOTHER TWIST BECAUSE HE IS SOMEHOW THE WORST SECRET KEEPER IN BIG BROTHER PRESENTING HSTORY !! The 3 housemates in danger will “decide amongst themselves” who gets evicted #bbuk #bbll“.

Another said: “Will just revealed on Late & Live that the 3 housemates in the exit room will be deciding amongst themselves who will be leaving the house! #BBLL #BBUK.”

This series marks the 25th anniversary of Big Brother, and they weren’t wrong when they said they wouldn’t be holding back.

Along with the return of Big Brother was the return of the iconic live stream. Viewers were able to sit down and watch the aftermath of the chaotic launch show after Big Brother Late and Live last night, but they were left annoyed with one feature, the bird sounds.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter to express their frustrations, one penned: “Once again the #BBUK ‘live feed’ is endless bird tweets… WTF is the point of offering a live feed when @bbuk is terrified that fans will leak what we’ve seen!!! Nobody fucking cares!! Just put the fucking cameras on!!”

Another said: “Here we go again love the bird noises #BBUK u have many cameras move them around!”

Big Brother continues tomorrow night at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX

Pencil skirts are back but this season’s twist on the trend will stop you looking like Nessa from Gavin and Stacey

THE last time I wore a pencil skirt, my brother affectionately told me I looked like Nessa Jenkins from Gavin & Stacey.

Brotherly love — always there to keep your feet firmly on the ground.

Get the look wrong, though, and you will end up looking like Nessa from Gavin & StaceyCredit: BBC

But, sadly, he was right.

My black, knee-length leather skirt and then short brown hair did make me look like the Welsh slot machine worker, minus the tattoos

Despite my affection for the show and actress Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa, the comment was enough to put me off that look for life.

Nessa is not exactly known for her chic style.

Now, as trends for autumn/winter start to appear, I’ve spotted that curve-clinging pencil skirts are back — from Gucci and Givenchy to high-street favourites Zara and Mango.

And now I’m wondering, has the time come to give the style another whirl?

There was a 12,000 per cent increase in searches on shopping site LTK for “pencil skirts” following the autumn/winter 2025 fashion weeks earlier this year.

This thirst for a more slimline look tells us one thing, if nothing else — many of us, myself included, want to jump off the conveyor belt of loose midi and maxi styles.

Five years on from lockdowns, we’re ready for a bit of wiggle. We want to get dressed up!.

Now, I’m not for one minute suggesting we revert back to peak Noughties pencil skirt trends, when going “out out” was all about looking like a sexy businesswoman.

tried on my teen era Topshop dress from 9 years ago & the results were insane, people say I look like a 50s movie star

Think peroxide blonde Victoria Beckham in her peak Wag era, complete with skintight skirt and peplum boob tube. Or reality stars like Towie original Amy Childs

But there was a time before this when the pencil skirt was stylish and classy.

THE last time I wore a pencil skirt, my brother affectionately told me I looked like Nessa Jenkins from Gavin & Stacey.

Starlets like Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe were big fans of the style, which became hugely popular in the late Fifties, with tucked in blouses and knits to show off their waist and bust.

As Marilyn tottered along the train platform in Some Like It Hot, the tight-fitting style may well have played a part in her trademark wiggle walk.

In the Eighties, pencil skirts were paired with shoulder-padded blazers. Women were making moves in boardrooms and this was power-dressing at its best. Think Melanie Griffith in Working Girl and Joan Collins in Dynasty.

Over the next few decades, the pencil skirt became a workwear uniform.

But recently, aside from wives of world leaders such as Melania Trump or contestants on The Apprentice, it has disappeared from our office attire.

Especially since Covid, you are more likely to wear flats and comfy trousers than a restrictive, uncomfortable and somewhat dated knee-length skirt.

It seems, though, that we have now come full circle. As well as the designers’ offerings, we’ve seen a pregnant Rihanna wear a pencil skirt to a pre-Met Gala bash.

I am convinced that there’s a way to wear this season’s wiggle skirts without looking like a string of sausages

Clemmie Fieldsend, Fashion Editor

We’ll also see the pencil return to screens this season as Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts and Niecy Nash-Betts star as outrageously fierce and successful lawyers in Disney’s legal drama All’s Fair later on this year.

But after enjoying years of elastic waistbands and roomy skirts, are the rest of us now ready to squeeze into a tummy-sucking number?

Personally, I’ll never get back into a black pleather version again.

I can’t shake my Nessa past and rarely get dolled up enough to dust off my peplum and six-inch heels.

But looking at the styles around on the high street, I am convinced that there’s a way to wear this season’s wiggle skirts without looking like a string of sausages.

The faux-leather options out there are looser and more flattering, and they come in a range of colours.

There are also cosy knitted versions or softer viscose numbers with bold patterns.

I like the idea of wearing one with an oversized blazer and knee-high boots to the office in the autumn, to sharpen up my workwear.

For drinks, I might even plump for a faux-leather number in sage or burgundy, with heels.

But for the majority of the week, I will be sticking with my favourite flats.

And I’m sorry, but you just can’t do a pencil skirt with ballet pumps or brogues without looking like a wally.

Coronation Street fans work out ANOTHER surprise child twist as newcomer’s connection to the cobbles is revealed

EAGLE-EAYED Coronation Street fans think they’ve worked out another link to the cobbles for DI Costello (played by Daon Broni).

ITV viewers have previously expressed their suspicions about the detective inspector, thinking he is hiding his role in the death of his colleague DS Lisa Swain’s late wife Becky.

After Friday’s episode of the soap, fans now think Costello has a connection to another character as the gripping storyline continues.

Dee Dee Bailey’s new love-interest Ollie appeared to take an interest in Lisa and viewers have flocked to Reddit to share their theories about his connection to Costello.

Somebody wrote: “So I’ve a new theory about Ollie and I’ve a feeling it’ll soon become popular. I think that he’s either related or connected to Costello.

“If you think about it, they came in around the same time and came to the forefront about the same time. Are both around the copshop alot lately. Both are inquisitive to people lately making sus comments.

“Who’s to say that it’s not a big corruption involving Costello, Ollie, the Radcliffes and Becky along with the infamous Tia Wardley.”

Another fan expressed: “Costello has been in it for over a year since the Joel case. But you could be onto something alright.”

Someone else responded: “I think there might be a twist that Ollie might be related to Costello and there’s a twist that he’s Costello’s son.”

The name Tia Wardley has been hanging over Lisa and her girlfriend Carla Connor for months, in connection to Becky.

In Friday’s bombshell episode, Tia finally arrived on the cobbles to explain herself – just in time for the women’s engagement party.

In the instalment, DI Costello was seen desperately trying to cover his tracks and hiding what he really knows about the mysterious Tia Wardley.

Coronation Street’s Becky McDonald’s return teased by Leanne Battersby

Tia turned up at the Bistro and told Lisa and Carla all about her connection to Becky.

She claimed to have been involved with the Radcliffe brothers and revealed that Becky had helped her escape her troubled life out of the goodness of her heart.

Lisa seemed genuinely touched that the truth meant that Becky had been a good cop – and had helped the woman escape a bad situation.

But after leaving the Bistro, the woman met up with Costello – and the truth soon emerged. The woman was not the real Tia Wardley.

She told Costello: “I gave them the full Meryl Streep. Really milked it. Looked like the blonde one was going to cry.”

And when the potentially dodgy cop questioned whether she actually managed to trick Lisa, the faker added: “They didn’t have a clue what the real Tia Wardley looked like, so yes…”

In addition to the on-screen confession, the credits also named her as “Fake Tia Wardley” confirming that she is definitely not the real woman Lisa and Carla were looking for.

But as Lisa and Carla made their way home from the celebrations, Lisa suddenly felt a chill.

It was then revealed that someone had been watching the couple, leaving the detective feeling completely unnerved.

Transfer news LIVE: Deadline Day looms – Nicolas Jackson to Bayern EXCLUSIVE, Isak to Liverpool TWIST, Garnacho latest

Mainoo wants Napoli move

Manchester United ace Kobbie Mainoo has told club officials he wants to move to Napoli.

According to The Mirror, Mainoo – who could cost £50million – wants to reunite with former team-mate Scott McTominay in Naples.

However, United have denied this is the case and are unwilling to cut ties with the midfield.

The same source claims Man Utd weren’t keen on the deal after seeing the impact of McTominay has had with the Italian champions.

The Red Devils would be keen to avoid a repeat of last year’s transfer mistake involving the Scotland international.

However, the England international is said to be “adamant” about making the move to the Serie A.

Hojlund’s Napoli deal

Manchester United ace Rasmus Hojlund is set to move to Napoli.

United have reportedly reached an agreement with the Partenopei for Hojlund.

According to transfer insider Nicolo Schira, the striker’s agent is currently in Naples to finalise the deal.

The paperwork is being completed and the Denmark international is signing a contract until 2030 with the option to extend for another year.

Marseille trying to sign Zinchenko

Marseille are working on a deal to sign Arsenal ace Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Zinchenko is among a group of players, which includes Jakub Kiwior, Reiss Nelson, Fabio Vieira and Albert Sambi Lokonga, that will be allowed to leave the Gunners..

This comes as the North Londoners look to ensure they comply with UEFA’s Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules.

According to transfer insider David Ornstein, L’OM are exploring a permanent deal for Zinchenko but talks are complicated by his salary demands.

Simons transfer to Tottenham DETAILS

Xavi Simons has officially joined Tottenham from RB Leipzig.

Spurs confirmed Simons is joining the club on a five-plus-two-year contract.

This comes after the North Londoners struck a £52million deal with Leipzig.

The Playmaker revealed a meeting with Tottenham boss Thomas Frank was the moment he decided to join the club.

Liverpool plan record Isak bid

Liverpool are expected to make a record bid for Newcastle star Alexander Isak in the coming days.

SunSport revealed last week that the Reds’ chiefs had sanctioned a £130million bid for Isak.

And the Merseysiders are now expected to finally launch it ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline day.

According to The Telegraph, discussions over the potential sale of the striker have progressed in the last 24 hours.

Liverpool are now set to launch a Premier League record offer this weekend.

The Prem champions are hopeful that it will be accepted, although the bid is £20m short of the Magpies’ £150m valuation.

Mourinho to Forest DENIED – EXCLUSIVE

Jose Mourinho has left his position as Fenerbahce boss after failing to lead the Turkish giants to the Champions League.

Mourinho has been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest after the Premier League outfit’s current manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s explosive press conference.

Nuno claimed his relationship with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is not as close as it used to be and strongly suggested he will be leaving the club.

SunSport, however, understand Nottingham have no interest in hiring Mourinho at the moment and their current manager is not leaving.

Marinakis also stated his relationship with Nuno is “solid” without problems “whatsoever” and the two will meet over the weekend.

The Greek businessman also said the Portuguese tactician is the right man to lead the Tricky Trees this season.

Emmerdale’s ‘genius’ latest twist sparks new mystery as top secret scenes to air

Emmerdale pulled off another big moment on Friday night which saw the killer John Sugden plot take another sharp turn, proving there’s still twists and turns ahead

Emmerdale pulled off another big moment on Friday night which saw the killer John Sugden plot take another sharp turn

While Emmerdale‘s dark John Sugden storyline looks set to be heading for the finish line, Friday night’s episode proved there’s still plenty of life, no pun intended, in the killer plot.

While some fans have had enough and are ready for villain John to face his comeuppance, perhaps the latest twist that aired on Friday could see it take its biggest turn yet. The latest episode of the ITV soap saw the moment it was revealed that John’s latest victim Mackenzie Boyd was still alive.

He’s been missing ever since John appeared to kill him a couple of weeks ago, in brutal scenes that sparked a number of Ofcom complaints. Mack was shot with a bow and arrow before John appeared to silence him for good, slamming a rock over his head.

But in the shocking closing moments of Friday night, we saw Mack alive while seemingly in a bad way. Then, nothing. The episode ended before we got any context and any news on his condition post-attack.

Friday night's episode proved there's still plenty of life, no pun intended, in the killer plot

Of course there will be questions and likely some reactions calling out the big move. How could Mack possibly have survived such brutal injuries? How did he get Mack away without anyone realising?

All to be revealed of course, but arguably this is one of the biggest twists yet, and one of the best in the entire storyline. “Robert Sugden’s big return, the will-they-won’t-they Robron chaos it triggered and Robert finding himself in the middle of John’s secret antics, and the resulting feud, was very much an epic move by the show, and it revitalised the storyline,” our soap insider shared.

“But this latest twist does so much for the storyline, and means so much. To have Mack alive completely reaffirms that John is not an intentional killer, he’s just someone who’s done very, very bad things.

“He’s a manipulator, he has to be in control and he goes to desperate lengths to ensure things go the way he wants. But he’s not a planned killer, and he feels guilt… most of the time. He could have killed Mack, silenced him, but he didn’t, because he no doubt couldn’t go through with it.”

This isn’t about painting John in a “he’s just made bad choices” light though. The twist is “genius” according to our soap expert, as it could completely derail John’s life and be the pivotal moment that sees it all come crashing down.

With Aaron already suspicious over John’s behaviour and his lies, about the cottage and about his whereabouts, surely it is only a matter of time before the truth about Mack, and everything, finally comes to light. We know John is leaving the show, so a comeuppance is inevitable.

Not only does Mack’s survival seal John’s end, but it could spark a ton of new mysteries across the coming days and weeks which can give this rather dark plot some new life. Again, no pun intended, RIP Nate. “The fact that John has ‘saved’ Mack, the very person that now knows everything, there is every chance the already guilty villain will cave and expose his own deep, dark secrets – not to mention keeping Mack alive surely has to spell the end of his villainous ways.

Emmerdale's dark John Sugden storyline looks set to be heading for the finish line

“John is already on the edge, and we don’t know yet, thanks to the cliffhanger, what his plans are for Mack and whether he plans to let him go. We know very little asides Mack’s true fate. John could crack at any moment with Aaron or even with Mack, given his desperate calls and messages to the helplines recently.

“But the bigger question is the stuff we haven’t seen. Mack’s survival was kept top secret, so we are guaranteed to be shown or told some unaired moments, and stuff that has not been given away in spoilers. That cannot simply be it with Mack, it has to be revisited.

“What did happen to him after that showdown? What has happened since his capture, and what’s gone on in those weeks he was believed to be dead? Surely, onscreen or not, we will be told some previously untold and unaired moments.”

That’s not all though, as it could spark some new mysteries. “This isn’t just going to leave big questions in terms of what we haven’t seen, but also a new mystery surrounding whether Mack will live or die, and if he can get away. Then there’s the ongoing mystery surrounding the body of Anthony Fox who was killed at the start of the year by Ruby Miligan.

“John still hasn’t disclosed where he buried him, and he sparked new theories with fans when mentioning him in a recent episode. This latest twist with Mack will no doubt leave fans wondering what really happened there too, and where Anthony is. Some may call it unrealistic, but I’d say Mack’s reappearance is somewhat a genius move, given all the things it could now lead to. It’s really, really exciting.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .

Destination X fans point out hidden clue favourite would leave competition in cruel twist

Destination X viewers were left outraged as as fan-favourite contestant as part of a shock twist as the competition nears the end

Destination X viewers were left outraged as as fan-favourite contestant left the competition amid a savage twist.

The BBC’s globetrotting reality series series follows a group of strangers hoping to to win £100,000 by correctly guessing where in the world they have been taken to. The programme hosted by Rob Brydon, sees the hopefuls dealt with various clues as to where they might be, ranging from languages written down and other key hints.

It has become something of a success with viewers, gaining around four million viewers per episode, and on Wednesday evening, fans tuned in to watch retired detective sergeant Claire, 51, Daren, 58, a taxi driver, and pilot Josh, 26, continue with their mission. They were joined by fellow contestants Judith 28, who works as a nuclear engineer, and endurance athlete Nick, 35, as well as marketing executive Saskia, 35.

But viewers were shocked at the end of the episode when Nick was dumped from the competition at the last moment, just one week ahead of the grand finale that is set to air on 29 August. Taking to X/Twitter, one fan fumed: “i knew he was leaving as soon as he said what he spend the money on! ffs ! i pray saskia don’t win #destinationx.”

A second fan raged: “Knew Nick was gone with the clip about what he would use the money for if he won. #DestinationX” and a third fan pointed out: “Nick has to win this in order to open his dog sanctuary!! #destinationx

In the episode, Nick correctly guessed they were in Pula but couldn’t find it on the map and thus was kicked out of the competition. He was the only person who had guessed correctly – but his incorrect place on the map meant he struggled.

Last week, the contestants saw their loved ones but had to pretend they did not know them. Jackie’s surprise appearance on the BBC show left Daren struggling, as he admitted he’d found it “tough” to not interact with her. “Jackie P is 10 foot from me,” he said. “You don’t know how hard that is. It was really tough.”

His co-star Saskia was quick to notice his reaction too, saying: “As soon as I saw Daren shed a tear, I was like ‘Jackie P is in here’.” The contestants were tasked with matching portraits of each other with photos of their loved ones, as they attempted to guess who was linked to who. The winner would then get to spend some time with their loved one. Unfortunately, Daren failed to win the task, meaning he didn’t get to see his wife again.

Viewers of Destination X were left ‘gutted’ by the latest twist in the popular BBC show, with many voicing the same grievance.

The reality programme returned to our telly screens on Wednesday (20 August) with another episode, which saw remaining contestants Nick, Saskia, Judith, Daren, Josh and Claire tackle the latest challenge on the Destination X bus.

Regrettably, Nick found himself bidding farewell to the BBC show after his location prediction was the furthest away from the group’s actual location, which was revealed to be Pula, Croatia.

Fans at home were left heartbroken by Nick’s departure from the show, with many taking to social media to vent their disappointment.

“I am so gutted, I really thought that Nick would get to the final and win! ! #DestinationX,” one person posted on Twitter, now X, while a second said: “I’m in mourning for nick from #DestinationX.”

A third viewer said: “I haven’t watched #DestinationX for long but I’m really sad to see Nick go, that was so unlucky, Could’ve won,” and another added: “Nick was great. Sorry to see him go. #DestinationX.”

A fifth Destination X fan said: “#DestinationX going to be really boring now Nick’s gone. Let’s see how they get on without the strongest player on board.”

Speaking after he was told he was the latest contestant to be eliminated, Nick said: “Stepping off the bus here is frustrating, because I said it as I was placing it.

“I couldn’t quite find where I needed to be, which was a shame. It’s been great, it’s been a great experience. It’s been really horrible and hard at times, lots of lessons learned.

“The social dilemmas, the decision-making, what to tell to who and when, is very draining. The game is hard.”

Nick’s fellow contestants were left stunned by his departure on the coach, with each expressing their astonishment whilst gearing up for the upcoming stage of the competition, reports the Manchester Evening News

Judith pondered how Nick had butted heads with particular participants throughout his stint on the BBC One programme, confessing she believed he might have been misjudged and was merely concentrated on the contest.

“I really don’t think he’s as bad a person as some people started to think. I think the game was just the first thing he thought about, the last thing he thought about when he went to bed. I think he was just so in it,” Judith revealed to her fellow Destination X participants.

Destination X continues tomorrow night at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Salah’s shock statement

Mohamed Salah has anointed Arsenal the “FAVOURITES” to win the Premier League this season.

Speaking to PFA awards presenter Cecil Thomas, who is a Gunners fan, he said: “I think you are the favourite now because you players who have been together for five years.

“I can’t say I’ll wish you luck – hopefully we do it again.”

Arteta reflects on Gyokeres debut

Mikel Arteta was full of praise for Viktor Gyokeres following his Premier League debut against Manchester United.

He said of the Swede: “He did a lot of things very good. You can tell, especially in our high pressing, the rhythm that we demand, especially in the first half, we’re giving a bit too much time.

“It’s something that we have to work on, especially there.

“And then in the finalising situation, he didn’t have that many chances to do that because, as I said, on the previous action before we had to play that last ball that the line was standing still with 40 metres behind, we managed to put the ball through to exploit his quality.

“But overall, coming away to Manchester United, winning your first game with Arsenal, it’s a good start.

‘A twist on it’: New mural puts Kobe Bryant in Dodger gear

The image is iconic — Kobe Bryant letting out a roar while tugging on his gold Lakers jersey after scoring 49 points during a playoff win over the Denver Nuggets on April 23, 2008.

It has been used in numerous murals around Southern California, including one that is being painted in larger-than-life form on the side of a future Eat Fantastic restaurant on the 700 block of North Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach.

This particular painting, however, is a little different from the others, and from the original image itself. Bryant’s intensity is still there. His pose is exactly the same. He is still wearing a No. 24 jersey.

But in this version, that jersey is not gold with “Lakers” spelled across the chest in purple letters.

It’s white, with “Dodgers” across the chest in blue letters.

A man in a Dodgers cap and faded black T-shirt stands with his hands in his pockets in front of a Kobe Bryant mural

Gustavo Zermeño Jr. altered an iconic image of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant for a Dodgers mural he is painting in Redondo Beach.

(Juliana Yamada / Los Angeles Times)

The altered version of the iconic image is just one portion of a sprawling mural paying tribute to the Dodgers’ 2024 World Series championship. It’s on the north-facing side of a former Carl’s Jr. building that will open later this year as part of the growing Eat Fantastic chain in the Los Angeles area.

The mural was conceived by artist Gustavo Zermeño Jr. and Eat Fantastic owner Efthemios Alexander Tsiboukas. It features some of the key figures from the Dodgers’ title run — players Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani (with his beloved dog Decoy) and rapper Ice Cube, who is shown riding in a classic Dodger blue convertible as he did when he performed before Game 3 of the World Series.

And then there’s the late Lakers legend Bryant, whose inclusion in the piece was a must, Zermeño said.

“Each [Eat Fantastic] location has a Kobe mural, at least the ones that have a good wall,” said Zermeño, who is a huge fan of both the Dodgers and Bryant. “And for this location, [Tsiboukas] wanted to create something for the Dodgers’ championship team. That’s why Kobe has the Dodger jersey on, you know, staying on theme with the locations having a Kobe mural.”

Zermeño said the original idea was to paint Bryant wearing a Dodgers baseball jersey, as he did while attending the team’s games over the years before his shocking death in January 2020.

Lakers Kobe Bryant celebrates his three–pointer against the Nuggets

(Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times)

“So we looked up a bunch of images,” Zermeño said. “A lot of them are obviously cool images, but either they were very pixelated, or just didn’t have what we wanted, that really aggressive Mamba-mentality feel.

“So we found this image. And you know, this image has been done before in several murals. But with the Dodger jersey, we wanted to throw a twist on it.”

Tsiboukas said: “That’s my favorite picture of him. I have the exact same one [painted at the restaurant location] in Arcadia. He’s wearing the real jersey, though, the yellow one. So I wanted a replica of that same one I did in Arcadia, and do it in a Dodger jersey, because of the Dodger dynasty right now.”

The purple and gold may have been removed from the jersey, but Zermeño said he purposefully incorporated them into the sunset depicted behind Bryant as a nod to the Lakers.

Zermeño started working on the mural Aug. 7 and expects to have it completed next week, ahead of Bryant’s Aug. 23 birthday. The portion featuring Bryant is already done — and it has garnered mixed reactions.

“For the most part, I’ve gotten a pretty positive reaction over it,” Zermeño said. “You know, a lot of Laker fans are also Dodger fans, so I think that overlap is pretty consistent throughout L.A. But yeah, man, you’re always going to have some haters. I think a lot of it is more like playful taunting. …

“A couple of people driving by — I think they’re just trying to be funny, making a joke, like yelling ‘He didn’t play for the Dodgers!’ or like, ‘He was a Laker!’ And then some people are just curious why I made that change. I think the people that are curious are older, some of the older crowd that, I guess, doesn’t understand why I would switch it, you know?”

Tsiboukas said he has seen a lot of online discussion about it, including on the popular kobemural Instagram page.

“Maybe 70% love it, and 30% are like, ‘That looks like a Clipper jersey,’” Tsiboukas said. “It’s causing a lot of friction back and forth, but it’s good topic. It’s raising awareness. It’s keeping Kobe’s legacy alive.”

Zermeño said he doesn’t mind the discourse over his artwork.

“It just, it sparks that conversation,” he said. “So regardless of whether people like it or not, I think it kind of breaks the ice for people to come up and ask questions and learn more about why we created it, and the process of putting it together. …

“It’s art, you know, and art’s meant to kind of create some type of conversation. And if we were to put him with a regular jersey, people would have been like, ‘Oh, that’s cool, but it’s been done X amount of times,’ you know? I’ve seen that photo in at least five different murals. So, yeah, I think switching it up definitely — I don’t want to say it elevated the piece, but it definitely created more conversation than there would be if we just kept the original jersey.”

Emmerdale’s Ben drops earth-shattering bombshell about Owen as John twist sealed

Emmerdale spoilers have revealed the moment removal man Ben makes a jaw-dropping admission to the police about Nate Robinson’s presumed killer Owen amid John Sugden’s lies

New Emmerdale character Ben makes his return to the ITV soap next week leaving Nate Robinson’s loved ones reeling. Fans may recall the character was the removal man who came to collect Nate’s belongings from his wife Tracy Robinson, prior to Nate’s death being announced.

At the time Nate was believed to have moved away and cut off his family, sending removal guy Ben to get his things for him. Now knowing that Nate was murdered, it became apparent to the police that it could not have been Nate who did this, and was likely his killer.

It comes after Nate’s murderer John Sugden successfully framed a patient called Owen for the crime, leaving him to die after an apparent overdose all so he could make it look like Owen was the killer. Next week Ben shows up in the village leaving Tracy stunned, with her and Nate’s loved ones keen to finally see whether or not Owen killed Nate.

Emmerdale spoilers have revealed the moment removal man Ben makes a jaw-dropping admission to the police
Emmerdale spoilers have revealed the moment removal man Ben makes a jaw-dropping admission to the police(Image: ITV)

When an update sees the detective tell Nate’s father Cain Dingle that there’s been some new evidence, the arrival of Ben sparks more intrigue. Now a new preview has revealed the moment Ben is in the shop with Tracy and Cain, as well as Mackenzie Boyd.

The detective on Nate’s case is called there and approaches Ben asking him where he’s been and why he hasn’t come forward. He claims he’s been away and hadn’t heard about Nate’s murder.

It then comes out that Tracy has showed Ben a photo of Nate, and Ben is able to confirm it was not him that booked the service or who he met with to hand over the items. The police are keen for Ben to identity whoever it was, believing this will give away who killed Nate.

As they open up a file, the show him a picture of Owen. Immediately Ben claims that Owen is the guy he met with and who asked for Nate’s belongings, posing as Nate.

With that it appears to confirm to the police and Tracy, and the others, that Owen had Nate’s stuff removed, and that this likely means he killed Nate. But as a viewer, we know full well that this just isn’t adding up, and there has to be something about newcomer Ben.

As they open up a file, the show him a picture of Owen
As they open up a file, the show him a picture of Owen(Image: ITV)

If Ben literally met the person who wanted Nate’s belongings, with him now claiming this was Owen, then he would know it was actually John or someone else. Given John had Nate’s belongings and he burned them, and he organised the pick-up in the first place, Ben would know it wasn’t Owen, the man in the photo.

Owen did not kill Nate, fact, and he wasn’t even in the village until months later. By the time Owen was on the scene, Ben had been and gone and Nate’s death was exposed. So it can’t have been Owen and we, the viewer, know that it wasn’t as we saw the flashbacks proving John did it, and then we saw him burn the items too.

So very clearly here Ben is lying to the police, but why? Unless of course Ben never actually saw anyone, John or not. But that said John wouldn’t have known Owen back then to set him up, so there’s just no way Ben has seen Owen, and therefore his identification to the police is false.

Destination X viewers ‘fuming’ over show’s ‘unfair twist’ – as favourite risks exit

Destination X fans have been left fuming over the BBC show’s latest episode, as contestant Josh was given an ‘unfair advantage’ which puts fan favourite Nick at risk

Rob Brydon

It was another tense night in Destination X tonight, as the BBC show aired its fifth episode of the series. Fans were left on a massive cliffhanger by host Rob Brydon, after the episode left them fuming.

The huge twist saw Josh was given the chance to sabotage someone and move their X 250km away from the point they chose. Josh opted to choose record breaking athlete Nick – who has shown his ability and strength throughout the course of the show.

Usually, fans will see who goes at the end of each episode, but they’ll have to wait a little while longer this week. It comes after Destination X fans ‘work out winner’ after spotting ‘clue’ in episode four.

The good thing for fans is that they won’t have to wait too much longer to see who goes, with the next episode airing tomorrow night on BBC One.

Fans are now worried that Nick may be kicked out after being sabotaged, as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter to discuss.

“Well, josh is going to sabotage nick isn’t he? #destinationx,” guessed one before he had even chosen. Another, who thought the advantage was unfair, said: “Whoever gets their X moved should get to come back in the final and move a remaining player’s X”.

“Moving the X is so unfair. Nick will be gone,” a third wrote, as another agreed: “This is such an unfair power this isn’t Big Brother it should be a case where players can basically eliminate others.”

#destinationX Moving someone’s marker is s**t. I’m going off this programme now,” said another, while one penned: “Josh sabotaging Nick… are we surprised…”

At the end of the episodes, whichever contestant guesses the furthest from the correct locale is kicked off the bus, and their journey comes to a sad end.

Therefore, with Nick’s X being moved so far away from the position he chose, will his journey come to an end?

It’s not the first episode that fans have had a complaint to make about the show. Last week, fans all took to X to complain that they were ‘getting annoyed’ with the show and the sheer lack of knowledge that the contestants seemed to possess. One viewer took to X to say: “Getting annoyed with #DestinationX – the lack of knowledge is appalling!”

Another said: “I assume it’s deliberate in this show that they picked contestants who know absolutely nothing about European languages or Geography, but it’s still very frustrating to watch.”

How will the cliff hanger unfold in tomorrow’s episode?

Last week, actor Dean Cain, known for portraying Superman in the 1990s TV show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, announced that he was going to be sworn in as a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.

Cain said he was joining the agency because ICE agents, whom he described as the “real true heroes”, were being vilified. He also posted an ICE recruitment video on Instagram with the Superman theme song playing in the background, and promoted the generous pay and benefits that come with being an ICE agent.

Cain is not the only one. Some pro-Trump celebrities have also defended or praised ICE. And Dr Phil tagged along on ICE raids in Chicago and quizzed apprehended migrants on camera.

But setting aside the irony that the Man of Steel himself was in fact also an undocumented alien, why would Superman be so keen to join ICE’s draconian raids targeting immigrants?

For one thing, we need to understand the allure of these ICE operations.

The visuals of masked federal agents, hopping out of armoured vehicles, in military-style gear and swiftly descending on what ICE enthusiasts would claim are terrorists, rapists, paedophiles, murderers, drug traffickers and gang members, are deeply comforting for many in the US.

This is a consequence of a long history where militarised policing gained a semblance of sacrosanctity in the country.

It is well documented that contemporary policing in the US has its origins in slave patrols. This means that the development of the US criminal justice system has its roots not only in slavery, but also in the belief that slave revolts or any effort to upend the racial hierarchy in American society are an existential threat to the established social order.

Over the years, the gradual militarisation of the police has drawn its rationale from periods of perceived existential crises in American society. Whether it was the rise of organised crime during the Prohibition era of the 1920s, uprisings during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, or when President Richard Nixon declared drug addiction “public enemy no 1” requiring an “all-out offensive”, these have served as the pretext for strong, military-style policing on American streets.

This militarisation of the police has been supported by Section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1997, which President Bill Clinton signed into law, allowing local law enforcement agencies to access excess military equipment from the Department of Defense (DOD). The 1033 programme has allowed the DOD to “sell or transfer”, among other things, mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, grenade launchers, aeroplanes and helicopters.

This love affair with ICE is also a cultural phenomenon. The hard-edged, violent and brash cop, willing to stray outside the bounds of the law to protect innocent civilians from evil (the Muslim terrorist, the Soviets, the Germans) is a popular Hollywood and American TV show staple. This has normalised the perception that to keep America safe from such existential threats, it is sometimes necessary to use deadly force or extrajudicial actions, no matter how cruel or excessive they may seem.

Of course, in all of this, we cannot ignore the deep, anti-immigrant sentiments that drive the support for ICE.

In my adult life, this xenophobia has taken many forms.

As an 18-year-old college student in upstate New York in the early 2000s, I was the physical epitome of all things evil and anti-American as the country waged its “Global War on Terror”. At the time, I remember a fellow student justifying the extra security checks I had to suffer through at airports, saying, “You cannot ignore the fact that you look like the people who hate us.”

In my late 20s as a PhD student in Copenhagen, I had to hear a senior colleague say, “You’re Indian. I guess your skill is raping women.” He was referring to the 2012 Delhi bus gang rape and murder that received global attention.

Globally, we have also seen a proliferation of reality TV shows like Border Security: Australia’s Front Line and Nothing to Declare UK that claim to show the reality of the multiple threats that Western countries encounter at their borders.

It is now all but commonplace to imagine the figure of the migrant as a vessel for all things we fear and hate.

When Syrian refugees arrived in Europe in 2015, they were portrayed as a security threat, a burden on public services, and a threat to European values.

Last year, the United Kingdom saw a wave of far-right anti-immigrant riots after a mass stabbing of girls in Southport. The riots followed false claims that the attacker was a Muslim migrant. Rioters attacked minority-owned businesses, the homes of immigrants and hotels housing asylum seekers.

This year, Ireland has seen anti-immigrant attacks on South Asians, including a six-year-old girl who was punched in the face and hit in the genital area. Reportedly, these attacks have been fuelled by anger over the affordability and housing crisis.

Such anti-immigrant sentiments have been endemic to American politics.

While the discourse during the Obama years was not as antagonistic, the removal of undocumented migrants was still a political priority. President Obama was called “deporter-in-chief”, and in 2012, deportations peaked at 409,849. That said, in the same year, he also signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, allowing undocumented migrants who were brought into the country as minors to apply for “renewable two-year periods of deferred action from deportation, allowing them to remain in the country”. DACA also made them eligible for work permits.

Deportations were also a priority during the Biden years. In fiscal year 2023, US immigration authorities deported or returned 468,000 migrants, surpassing any single year during Trump’s first term.

That said, during Trump’s tenure in the White House, the anti-immigrant rhetoric has been vicious, and the Republican leader does not shy away from portraying migrants as synonymous with criminality and an existential threat to the demographic, moral and cultural fabric of the United States.

This framing of immigrants as a problematic presence in American society served as a pretext for Trump’s plan to build a wall across the US-Mexico border to stop the movement of undocumented migrants, the travel ban on citizens from several Muslim countries, and a suspension of the US Refugee Admissions Program.

Trump’s second term has only been a continuation of such policies. With the genocide ongoing in Gaza and the concurrent visibility of the Palestine solidarity movement, the anti-immigration movement has merged with anti-Palestinian racism, with ICE also targeting pro-Palestine activists whom the Trump administration claims hold views that are antithetical to American values.

With all of this in the background, it then makes sense that an actor who once played an undocumented alien on TV and who himself has Japanese heritage would join ICE. In the era of Trump, targeting the tired and poor huddled masses who yearn to breathe free seems to be the American way.

Explosive twist in Myleene’s feud with Rochelle as it’s revealed singer gave her ‘cheating’ ex place to stay after split

ROCHELLE Humes gave Myleene Klass’s ex-husband a place to stay after their bitter split, pals have revealed.

The Saturdays singer, 36, lent a helping hand to showbiz security manager Graham Quinn, 51, in 2013.

Their continued friendship is said to have caused a rift between Rochelle and ex-Hear’Say star Myleene — who believes she took Graham’s side.

It comes after Myleene, 47, claimed she saw Graham and an unnamed celebrity “unzipping” each other at her birthday party.

Last week, we told how Myleene was locked in a feud with Rochelle and Saturdays’ bandmate Frankie Bridge, who were both clients of Graham.

Rochelle and her JLS pop star husband Marvin were also pictured with Graham in Ibiza.

A source last night told The Sun: “Rochelle was doing what she saw as looking out for a friend in a time of need.

“Rochelle and Marvin are still clearly very much friends with Graham.

“Myleene is of the view that Rochelle took sides from the beginning of her marriage breakdown.

“The fact Rochelle and Graham’s friendship is still there after all these years has put an everlasting rift between Myleene and Rochelle.

“They both do everything in their power to avoid each other.”

Rochelle and Frankie, 36, previously enjoyed a close friendship with Classic FM host Myleene.

In 2012, Myleene and Frankie, both hosts on Loose Women, attended Rochelle’s hen do.

But they have not appeared together on the ITV show since an awkward episode last year.

The alleged unzipping incident is said to have happened before Myleene and Graham married.

The couple — who share daughters Ava, 17, and 13-year-old Hero — wed in 2011 and divorced two years later, with Myleene citing “unreasonable behaviour”.

The Sun on Sunday reported yesterday that Graham said he had been stopped from seeing his children since 2014 and had suffered from depression.

Representatives for Rochelle and Myleene did not reply to a request for comment yesterday.
