2 girls hospitalized after thrown from Ferris wheel in Louisiana

Nov. 3 (UPI) — Two young girls were in intensive care at a hospital after they were thrown from a Ferris wheel at a festival near Baton Rouge, La.

The girls, both under 13 years old, around noon Saturday were ejected from the ride’s basket while it was rotating and they fell 20 feet onto a steel platform in New Roads, which is part of Pointe Coupee Parish, about 40 miles northwest of Baton Rouge. A third girl clung to the basket and was rescued.

WAFB-TV reported one girl has a possible brain bleed and the other has broken bones. They were taken to the Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, NBC News reported.

Sheriff Rene Thibodeaux told NBC News that the girls were sitting in the basket when it tipped over.

“As it was going around, it was just, like, stuck at an angle and they flipped out of it,” Ronald Brasseaux, who witnessed the incident, told WAFB-TV.

He said he felt unsafe riding the same ferris wheel the previous day.

“They need to take this thing down,” he told the TV station.

Brasseaux said he believes the basket’s hinges might have gotten stuck.

The ride didn’t have any restraints.

“I feel like it should be seatbelts on there, because, mind you, it’s just a gate on there, like somebody can easily fall out, a child can easily just open the gate and then step out,” witness Madison Fields told WBRZ-TV.

Another visitor, Eddie Jones, told WAFB: “We were in line to buy tickets to the Ferris wheel, and I heard a girl scream, and I looked over, and the Ferris wheel car was kicked over. I don’t know how it got in that position, but it was stuck. Yeah, I’ll probably never get on another Ferris wheel.”

He posted video of the accident on Facebook.

The ride and another one nearby were closed to the public amid an investigation.

The state’s fire marshal’s office is required to perform safety checks on rides and attractions.

The Ferris wheel is operated by Crescent City Amusements, based in Slidell, La.

In 2023, a ride operated by the company, the Ring of Fire, stranded riders upside-down for more than three hours in northeastern Wisconsin. An investigation found a lighting transformer lodged into the track.

The Ferris wheel was part of the annual Harvest Festival, which supports the local agriculture-based community,” according to its website. It ran from Friday through Sunday on False River.

The Ferris wheel is named after its inventor, civil engineer George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., who designed the ride for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

‘BBC Ghosts was filmed at my house – I’m being thrown out at 71 for holiday lets’

West Horsley Place has been used as a filming location for several shows, such as Enola Holmes, Howards End, Vanity Fair and Ghosts, and one resident claims she’s being thrown out

BBC’s Ghosts was filmed at West Horsley Place in Surrey, which is where Baschea Walsh has been living for nearly 20 years. However, she has now claimed that she is being thrown out of her home so fans can rent it out instead.

The 71-year-old has said that she was told in July that she has until the middle of November to leave, so it can be turned into a short-term let. Baschea is gutted at having to move out and says the property will be aimed at watchers of Ghosts.

Ghosts is a show about a haunted house that was filmed at Grade I-listed West Horsley Place. The trust that manages the estate confirmed the mum-of-one has been asked to leave and that the property will be rented out.

However, it has been denied that it is specifically for TV fans. Baschea said: “They came to my house and said, ‘Your home is being turned into a holiday cottage, you have four months to go’. I was stunned as you can imagine. I am 71. I am going to be homeless.

“It is not about me, it is about the injustice of throwing a 71-year-old out. It is about anybody who is getting these section 21s out of nowhere because of greedy landlords.

“I was in shock for two months. For the first week, all I could eat was potatoes; I couldn’t even cook. I just felt completely lost. I didn’t know what to do. It came out of nowhere undeservedly in everyone’s opinion, and I really don’t know what is going to happen to me.”

West Horsley Place dates back to 15th century and was once owned by Henry VIII. It was last inherited by Bamber Gascoigne, who is the former host of University Challenge, who then decided to hand over the manor house and its assets to a charitable trust, which was aimed at restoring the building.

It has been used as a location for film and television productions, including Enola Holmes, Howards End, Vanity Fair and Ghosts, where the building was renamed Button House.

Baschea first moved into the house back in 2006 and said that it was instantly her dream home. She said: “This has been my life and absolutely the place for me to be. I fell in love with it the first time I came here. I knew this was the place I wanted to be. I had dreamt about it.

“It was just perfect for me. It was a really harmonious place to be, and we all got on with each other really well. It was a privilege to live here. Bamber and Christina said I could live here forever, and we never thought to put it in writing. We never thought they would sink so low.”

Baschea said that the Ghosts film crew were on set for five months every year for five years straight and that filming could be very disruptive.

She said: “It is disruptive when they film, especially at night with all the extra lights on really bright and the generators, extra mud, and people wandering around. But I embraced it because I wanted to support the house. It needed all sorts of things doing to it.

“Now I feel that I should have asked for a rent reduction for all the disruption, but I didn’t because I thought it was for the good of the house.”

Ghosts followed the adventures of a living couple sharing a house with a group of spirits, and it was a ratings hit for the BBC with 6.2 million people watching the final episode in 2023.

A friend of the pensioner has started a petition to stop her eviction from the home, which has received more than 2,000 signatures. Baschea said that she has started looking for a new home, but that she will not leave her cottage until a suitable replacement is found.

The West Horsley Trust said: “West Horsley Place Trust is an independent charity caring for a fragile heritage estate. To secure its future and continue our public mission, we are creating increased, diversified and sustainable income through carefully considered changes, including updating and converting two historic cottages into short-term lets.

“The cottages will allow people to stay on the estate to access and enjoy it, our heritage, our cultural activities and those of the wider region. The short-term lets will also support our wider business activities, such as weddings and events.

“We fully appreciate how significant an upheaval this is for the tenant. We have not taken the decision to end this tenancy lightly. We have provided an extended notice period and offered personalised support, including assistance in exploring alternative housing options.”

‘Let the dogs off the leashes’ – Rory McIlroy slams Ryder Cup abuse with police K9s drafted in after beer thrown at wife

RORY MCILROY said he wished the police “let the dogs off the leash” during the “unacceptable” fan behaviour at the Battle of Bethpage.

But he admitted it was “very f***ing satisfying” to stick it back to the abusers by walking away with 3.5 points and, more importantly, the Ryder Cup trophy in Europe’s grasp.

McIlroy was abused all week long in New York but it boiled over during his wins on Saturday.

He swore back at the crowd for the incessant vitriol – telling one yob to “shut the f*** up” in the morning before declaring “I’m really f***ing good” later during his fiery fourballs victory with Shane Lowry.

And things got so out of control that the police stepped in with troopers lining the ropes and dogs on hand to restore order.

But while some idiots were ejected for their conduct, McIlroy would have liked to see them have to deal with the K9s.

Speaking in a jubilant winning press conference after a nervy 15-13 European win, he said: “I wish they had let the dogs off the leashes.

“The police out there and the amount of security presence was insane.

“Look, nothing was going to happen. There wasn’t going to be physical altercation [but] there was a lot of language that was unacceptable and abusive behaviour.

“We should ever accept that in golf.

Sky Sports forced to apologise after Rory McIlroy’s foul mouthed outburst towards American hecklers at Ryder Cup

“It was a rough week for all of us. But at the same time, we shut them up by our performance and how we played.

“I chirped back a few times because it got to me a few times, but we tried to handle everything that came our way with class and poise, and for the most part, I felt like we did that.”

McIlroy had to deal with shocking heckles about his personal life throughout the weekend – all within earshot of wife Erica.

And he heaped praise on her for showing “class, poise and dignity” after she was verbally and physically assaulted by the horrific New York crowds, including having a beer thrown at her on Saturday.

An emotionally drained McIlroy, who lost his “pillow fight” of a singles match to world No1 Scottie Scheffler, continued: “It should be off-limits, but obviously it wasn’t this week.

“Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman.

“She handled everything this week with class, poise and dignity like she always has.

“I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.”

As applause broke out among the European players, close pal Lowry then added: “I was out there for two days with Erica McIlroy, and the amount of abuse that she received was astonishing.

“The way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable, and kudos to her for that.”

Real Betis vs Como friendly descends into chaos with ex-Premier League ace SLAPPING opponent and punches thrown

A so-called friendly between Real Betis and Como descended into chaos after players from both sides were seen throwing punches at one another.

The Spanish and Italian clubs were playing their penultimate friendlies before the competitive season starts for them.

But Wednesday evening proved the two sides had certainly found their competitive edge in pre-season.

Cesc FabregasSerie A side won the clash 3-2, but not before trying to go 12 rounds with their rivals after a stunning brawl broke out at the end of the first half.

Former West Ham star Pablo Fornals was at the centre of the brawl as he exchanged blows with Máximo Perrone.

The rivals were seen squaring up to one another before they got involved in a shoving match.

That was abruptly ended when Fornals appeared to PUNCH Perrone, with the Argentine then trying strike the 29-year-old.

However, he was unable to do so as Betis and Como players rushed over to intervene, before many of them also ended up in grappling matches of their own while trying to diffuse the situation.

There was one unfortunately funny moment in the melee as Cucho Hernandez came flying in to try and land a punch on a rival, only to punch his own team-mate, Natan, in the face instead.

Fornals avoided being sent off despite landing the first blow, with the same lack of punishment also going to Hernandez following his attempted flying punch.

Meanwhile, former Manchester City star Perrone was not so lucky and was sent for an early shower.

In the aftermath, ex-Arsenal star Hector Bellerin tried to speak to the referee to get the situation under control.

But the Spaniard instead became more and more animated himself as he grew frustrated with the referee after he had also sent him off.

The 30-year-old was guided away from the official while still protesting, before tempers between the teams flared again by the tunnel.

Bellerin’s red card was reversed before the end of the first half.

It remains to be seen whether any retrospective punishment could be enforced.

On the other hand, Como – who recently “banished” Dele Alli from their squad – will play Suditrol in the first round of the Coppa Italia before facing Lazio in their Serie A opener.

Police have fired baton rounds, deployed water cannon and brought riot dogs to the scene

A second night of serious disorder has broken out in Ballymena, County Antrim, with petrol bombs, masonry and fireworks being thrown at police.

Police have fired baton rounds and deployed water cannon. Officers have also brought riot dogs on to the scene.

Crowds gathered in the Clonavon Terrace area, which is also where violent disorder, described as “racist thuggery”, broke out on Monday night.

Police have asked members of public to avoid the area.

A parked car was set on fire and roads blocked with burning barricades.

In response, the PSNI issued a warning over loud speaker for the crowds to disperse before firing impact rounds and water cannon.

Monday’s violence broke out following an earlier peaceful protest over an alleged sexual assault in the town.

Petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown at police, and six homes attacked with four of them damaged by fire.

One assembly member, Sian Mulholland, told the Northern Ireland Assembly that a family with three young children had to “barricade themselves into their attic”.

A number of businesses were also damaged, with windows and doors smashed.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with riotous behaviour, disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage and resisting police.

Police have asked people to avoid the area

The police described the actions as “racist thuggery” and indicated some people on Monday night were “clearly intent on violence”.

The prime minister’s official spokesman described the events in Ballymena as “very concerning”.

Earlier on Monday, two teenage boys appeared before Coleraine Magistrates’ Court accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Ballymena.

They spoke through an interpreter in Romanian to confirm their names and ages.

Their solicitor said they would be denying the charges.

A third man was arrested on Monday night in connection with the sexual assault but was unconditionally released.

Jim Allister said he repudiated and resented Claire Hanna’s comments

Earlier, the MP who represents Ballymena was criticised for an “insincere” and “weaselly” condemnation of the violence.

North Antrim MP Jim Allister said he “utterly repudiated” the criticism by fellow Northern Ireland MP Claire Hanna.

The Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) leader said the violence was wrong and unwarranted, but also said the “oversubscription of migrants” in that part of the town had led to tensions.

Speaking on BBC Newsline, Jim Allister said his primary thoughts were with all who suffered in the violence but also the 14-year-girl who was the alleged victim of the sexual assault, and for whom “thousands gathered last night to show empathy”.

“My fear was, and it turned out to be true, that that vital demonstration of opposition to violence against women would be overwhelmed by a resort to violence by those who had other ideas and other agendas, and sadly that’s what happened.”

He added that the underlying tensions had been “there for a long time in this particular part of Ballymena” because there was “an oversubscription of migrants who had been placed there”, causing “tensions to rise to the surface”.

“In that sense, it was unsurprising but utterly unacceptable that there should be any resort to violence.”

When asked about what evidence he was drawing on, Allister said the last time he canvassed a street in the area with 50 houses, he came “upon five local, if I can call them that, residents of Ballymena”.

He added: “If you find a street where only five of fifty houses are occupied by local people, then I think there is an imbalance which is storing up trouble.”

Allister said that while some work and integrate, “many of them sadly have not integrated and have sought to pursue a lifestyle which is not compatible, in many ways, with what is expected in a town community such as Ballymena”.

Claire Hanna accused Jim Allister of choosing to “explain away” episodes of violence.

South Belfast MP Claire Hanna responded by saying “some politicians are choosing to explain away” episodes of violence.

“We are hearing words of condemnation which are, at best insincere, and many people would describe as weaselly,” the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) leader added.

“You can choose each day when you have a mandate and a platform to get up and try and solve problems or you can choose to exploit them, you can choose to try to calm tensions or you can try and fan them.”

In response, Allister said: “If Claire is trying to pretend that I am insincere in my condemnation of violence then I utterly repudiate and indeed resent that comment.”

He accused her comments of being “supercilious lectures from someone who thinks they are superior on these issues”.

What have other NI politicians said?

Earlier, previous comments from Jim Allister on Monday, that there had been a demographic change due to “unfettered immigration” in the area, were criticised by Hanna’s party colleague Matthew O’Toole, who said they were “deeply irresponsible”.

Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) assembly member Paul Frew said he had been warning about “rising tensions” in the area and those warnings have “now come true”.

“There is not justification for what happened,” he added. “Violence is always wrong.”

Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long said she was appalled by the “disturbing scenes” while Sinn Féin’s Philip McGuigan, who represents the North Antrim constituency, appealed for calm and urged political leaders to “use measured language”.

Iconic carmaker thrown £1BILLION lifeline after axing 20k staff as fears grow over future of UK’s biggest motor factory

AN ICONIC carmaker has been thrown a £1billion lifeline from the UK Government.

The struggling car maker had announced plans to axe over 20,000 members of staff due to soaring production costs and disappointing sales.

Nissan is looking to raise £5.2billion to stay afloat, with UK Export Finance underwriting a £1billion loan – which will support the beleaguered company.

The manufacturer is planning to cut its number of factories from 17 down to 10.

This has prompted fears that the brand’s Sunderland factory could be under threat.

While Nissan has not confirmed the fate of its only UK factory, its CEO Ivan Espinosa has insisted that more electric cars will be produced there.

It is hoped that the £1billion loan from Nissan’s lenders, underwritten by The Government, will protect the site.

The huge cash injection is just a fifth of the 1Trillion Yen needed by the company to survive.

It will also look to issue as much as 630billion yen in convertible securities and bonds, including high-yield and euro notes.

Reportedly, the firm is looking to sell-and-lease-back its Yokohama headquarters alongside several properties in the United States.

The Yokohama site is valued at £500 million and was first opened in 2009.

It has 22 floors and a glitzy gallery, along with thousands of workers who use the site every day.

Japanese giant unveils its new bargain EV with quirky ‘bug eye’ headlights

Finally, the struggling car manufacturer is eyeing a sale of its stakes in Renault and battery maker AESC Group.

Mr Espinosa has commented in the past on Nissan’s urgent cost-cutting mission.

He said: “In the face of challenging full-year 2024 performance and rising variable costs compounded by an uncertain environment, we must prioritise self-improvement with greater urgency and speed, aiming for profitability that relies less on volume.”

He added: “As new management, we are taking a prudent approach to reassess our targets and actively seek every possible opportunity to implement and ensure a robust recovery.”

Development on some Nissan models has been paused, whilst the company tries to balance its books.

Work on all “advanced and post-FY26 product activities” has been paused, though Nissan has not confirmed which particular vehicles will face suspension.

Mr Espinosa has previously issued a full statement about Nissan’s financial woes.

He said: “This is not something that happened in the last couple of years.

“It’s more of a fundamental problem that probably started back in 2015, when management thought this company could reach [annual global vehicle sales] of around eight million.

“There were heavy investments both in terms of planned capacity as well as in human resources, but the reality today is we are running at around half that volume. And nobody did anything to fix that until now.”

Shocking moment punches thrown as brawl erupts between Man Utd & Spurs fans in Spain ahead of Europa League final

WATCH the shocking moments a brawl erupts between Manchester United and Tottenham fans as punches get thrown ahead of the Europa League final.

Up to 70,000 Man Utd and Tottenham fans have flooded the streets of sunny Bilbao in good spirits and with drinks flowing.

However, the mood took a dark turn with footage surfacing on X of a brawl between the two sets of supporters.

In the shocking video, a large group of football hooligans are seen brawling as they throw objects and punches at each other.

Residents alerted authorities at around 9.20pm after they witnessed violent behaviour on Fermín Calbetón Street.

Witnesses say the fight broke out when two large groups of supporters began shouting and hurling insults,

It quickly escalated into a full-blown brawl, with both Man Utd and Spurs fans grabbing whatever they could to throw at each other.

One hooligan overturned a terrace table and used it as a weapon against the other group.

Drinks and bins were also hurled, creating a chaotic scene that posed a serious risk to local businesses and passersby.

Several local police patrols rushed to the scene after reports of the brawl and quickly restored order.

No arrests have been made so far, but officers have stayed in the area to keep the situation under control.

An ambulance was also dispatched, with several people treated at the scene.

Up 70k Man United and Spurs fans begin flooding Bilbao soaking up sun & cervezas ahead of Europa League final

However, after further assessment, staff determined no one needed to be taken to the hospital.

It comes as tens of thousands of Brits landed in Bilbao ahead of the highly anticipated final.

Some are braving an epic 32-hour-plus ferry ride which set sail at 10pm on Sunday evening and won’t arrive until 8am on Tuesday morning.

With flights to Spain rocketing over £1,000 after the Prem teams sealed their final spots, many took advantage of the cheaper sea-route option, which set them back £260 for a cabin.

The sky-high air prices are due to just six direct flights from Britain to the Basque region’s industrial port city each day.

And with only 65 hotels in Spain’s tenth largest city, accommodation has been fully booked for weeks.

Each club has millions of fans across the globe, but since there are just 14,000 tickets allocated to each team, bagging a seat to the showpiece event has been a tricky task.

Last night, precious tickets to the big game were selling on the black market for up to £10,000.

EasyJet was charging £1,823 to fly from Gatwick to Bilbao on Wednesday morning and return on Thursday morning, while the cheapest hotels for Wednesday night cost around £1,200.

But for those fans who managed to snap up the golden tickets, footage has shown them enjoying themselves.

A Bilbao bar was flooded with Brit fans chanting and drinking ahead of the anticipated final.

Spurs fans were also seen welcoming the team bus as it arrived in the city one day before the clash.

Footage taken by The Sun showed fans arriving to fill the streets of Bilbao about 40 hours before kick-off.

Both sets of supporters have been pictured marching through the streets, chanting songs with beers in hand as they gear up for the Europa League final.

Footie fanatics get the party started early

By Sun man in Bilbao, Dave Courtnadge

IT’S barely midday in Bilbao on the day before the Europa League final between Manchester United and Spurs – but it’s already getting lively.

I arrived in the city at about 9am after a 32-HOUR ferry ride from Portsmouth.

And the first thing a lot of fellow fans planned to do was find a pub for a well-earned drink.

Walking around the area around the San Mames stadium this morning, a fair few others had the same idea.

Many have had long journeys, stopping off overnight in another city to keep down the soaring cost of getting here, with some direct flights over £1,000.

So it’s no surprise many are already getiing the party started, or the Bilbao leg of the party anyway.

Spurs fan Gary, who flew out from London before an overnight stay in a Madrid hotel resembling a “prison cell”, joked as he supped a pint in the sun: “I’m just getting some practice in for tomorrow.”

The atmosphere has been brilliant so far, and hopefully that will continue.

There had been claims that Spurs fans are set to outnumber United fans by 5 to 1, with an estimated 50,000 supporters of the two English sides expected to arrive.

One Tottenham follower I spoke to joked that they had bought all the flights out of London to keep the Reds out.

Based on the number of Spurs shirts I’ve already seen, he might be right.

Aberdeen: Jack MacKenzie left bloodied by object thrown by own fans in Dundee Utd defeat

Aberdeen defender Jack MacKenzie was left bloodied after being struck by what seemed to be a seat – thrown by one of his own fans – amid a pitch invasion following his side’s Scottish Premiership defeat at Dundee United.

Unused subtitute MacKenzie was on the pitch while the United supporters invaded the playing surface after their side denied Aberdeen fourth place.

And he was felled by a projectile hurled from the area of the ground that housed a travelling support restricted in number after objects were aimed at United manager Jim Goodwin in the last meeting at Tannadice.

Speaking to BBC Scotland after his side sealed a European place on Saturday, Goodwin labelled the incident “a disgrace”.

“I deliberately took myself off the pitch as quickly as I could because we’ve had previous with the Aberdeen supporters in the past,” the former Pittodrie boss said.

“I’m really disappointed to hear young Jack has been hit by an object thrown by his own supporters. He’s inside having stitches now, it’s an absolute disgrace.

“It’s probably taken something as serious as this to happen for the authorities to finally step in and do something about it to identify these idiots who let down a really good club.”
