Bargain Hunt star Irita Marriott was left consoling a guest on her Discovery+ show The Derbyshire Auction House
Bargain Hunt star Irita Marriott left a guest in tears as their item sold for more than “100 times its value”.
The BBC antiques expert was presenting her Discovery+ series, The Derbyshire Auction House, when she stumbled upon a heartfelt story with guest Helen and her son Ben.
While searching their home for hidden gems, Helen brought forward a set of family photos which held original signed shots from acclaimed photographers that dated back to 1975.
They included works from Graham Smith and Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, whose works are now displayed in the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, reports the Express.

In a heartbreaking twist, it was revealed that the photographs were being auctioned to fund the care of Helen’s husband, Alan.
Alan was suffering from dementia at the time and needed full-time care, though he sadly died before the episode went to air, with the money being used to pay for his funeral.
The cherished pictures once adorned the hallway of their home, thanks to Alan’s former role in promoting cinema and photography.
The photographs were sold individually, with one estimated at £80 to £120. This quickly sparked a fierce bidding war, with the picture ultimately fetching a staggering £12,000.

After learning the price that the photograph had sold for, Helen was moved to tears.
Following the auction, Irita reflected on the difficult situation, noting: “It can’t be easy for them. These items are things that they’ve lived with all their lives.
“Now that Alan’s gone into care, it’s probably going to be really sad to see them go.”
Helen’s son, Ben, also expressed his shock at the auction outcome, remarking, “I was absolutely gobsmacked at the values people were willing to bid for what we thought were just nice pictures… that we saw on the wall every day. Absolutely brilliant.”

Liam Payne fans have been left inconsolable as his final Netflix project has been released. Building The Band, which Liam filmed for Netflix just weeks before his death, has finally been released on the streaming platform.
The programme will show Liam at his best, helping other emerging musicians discover their talent and helping them navigate life in a band. But following his heartbreaking death in October last year, there had been speculation as to whether the show would still air.
Netflix later confirmed that they had shown the programme to Liam’s family, who had given their blessing and had watched the entirety of the show. On the programme, Liam sits alongside pal Nicole Scherzinger, who helped create mega-band One Direction when she was a guest judge on The X Factor, as well as former Destiny’s Child singer, Kelly Rowland.
Building The Band’s AJ McLean shared a moving tribute to the late Liam Payne(Image: Netflix)
As the show opened, host and Backstreet Boys star AJ McLean shared a very moving tribute to Liam. He said: “When we came together to film Building The Band, we never imagined we’d soon be saying goodbye to our friend, Liam Payne.
“Liam is a guest judge in later episodes and through his presence, we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice. It’s through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family.” Since the first episode dropped earlier today, fans have taken to social media to share their heartbreak and tears.
One said: “I’m already broken.” A second went on to add: “I’m not strong enough to watch the show. The last work, the last performance, the last smile… I can’t do it, not yet. My mind keeps dragging me back to the pain, to the brutal truth that he’s gone. Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough but right now I just can’t.”

“I miss you so much, my love, wherever you are. I hope you’re being free and happy,” said another. Meanwhile, a fourth devastated fan typed: “You’re so deeply missed Liam.” Another commented: “Ahhh… I don’t think I can bring myself to watch Building The Band just yet. The trailer alone broke me, and I can’t even imagine how much harder the full show will hit. I’m sorry, Liam. One day, I promise. I’m so proud of you, and I know you were proud of it too.”
But in the first four episodes of the series, this is the only mention of Liam. As the credits rolled, the only judge who was named was Nicole Scherzinger.
As the fourth episode came to an end, host AJ revealed that the winning band would receive $500,000 as the cameras panned to Nicole and Kelly Rowland, with Liam being absent from the shot.
In October, Liam sadly died aged just 31, after falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the weeks leading up to his death, he had been in Manchester filming the series. Netflix had ensured that Liam’s legacy will be cemented on the programme and he will remain a firm key feature on the show.
A source said: “Even though Liam had filmed a substantial amount of material for the show, the decision was made shortly after his passing to continue the project, honour his legacy and amazing story as a One Direction member and bring this series to audiences.”
Building The Band episodes one to four are available to stream now on Netflix.
Ryanair passengers were treated to an unexpected surprise by a man on the flight who wanted to spread kindness with a wonderful gesture and make it the “happiest plane in the sky”

A spontaneous act of generosity on a Ryanair flight left passengers so moved that some were reduced to tears. Air travel often brings stories of seat disputes or complaints about fellow travellers, but one young man aimed to bring a wave of positivity aboard his Ryanair journey.
Staffordshire’s Sebbie Hall aspired to transform the aircraft into the “happiest plane in the sky.” In an attempt to “make someone a billionaire,” according to a crew member, Sebbie bought a scratchcard for every family group on the flight. A video on TikTok captures the moment Sebbie and the crew member distributed the cards to seated passengers.
One woman was visibly emotional, while another passenger gave Sebbie a handshake.
Despite living with a rare chromosome anomaly causing physical and communication challenges and learning disabilities, Sebbie continues to spread kindness.
The Ryanair crew member who helped Sebbie in distributing the scratchcards informed passengers that Sebbie has performed a random act of kindness daily for five years, beginning during lockdown to bring smiles to people’s faces.
He has raised more than £100,000 to aid disabled and disadvantaged children across the UK, earning him the title of UK kind hero last year.
The Ryanair staff member’s called for “an absolute round of applause” for Sebbie from passengers on board.
Another employee of the airline announced: “Sebbie wants to say ‘good luck strangers, no strings attached’ but if you win, could you please somehow let him know?” He doesn’t want your money but he’d like to know. Good luck!”

The TikTok clip featured delighted passengers brandishing their scratch cards showing how pleased they were with Sebbie’s selfless act.
The post racked up more than 800 comments, as curious users asked about any potential winners.
Sebbie responded, confessing that he was unaware of any victories, “but they were happy.”
Many comments celebrated the sweet gesture, one user said: “The lady sobbing would be me if I was on this flight.”
An impressed Ryanair crew member added: “As Ryanair crew, this is incredible! What a smashing young man.”
A third chimed in: “Oh Sebbie, what a wonderful thing to do. We need more Sebbies in the world.”
Emotionally touched, a fourth viewer commented: “I’m definitely not laid in bed bawling my eyes out.” Someone else praised Sebbie as a “real life angel.”
In March 2022, the Sebbie Hall Kindness Foundation was set up, providing financial support for initiatives promoting inclusion for disabled young people and offering communication, arts, and sports resources to families and organisations working with individuals aged 16 and above.
Kindness is Sebbie’s ‘superpower’, and in a recent act of generosity, he distributed Fab ice lollies to passers-by on a warm day, telling them they are ‘fab’.

A woman was left almost crying as she was told she may not be able to make her journey to Paris as there was something wrong with her passport – but she had no idea there was a problem

A woman was left almost sobbing as she realised she’d made a big passport mistake when she was travelling from Sydney to Paris. Jane Lu was trying to board her flight with a passport she’d recently used on two trips to America when she was told that she may not be able to fly due to there being something wrong with it.
Over the top of the video, she wrote: “Help?! Has anyone ever had this happen?” as she explained the situation to her followers. Jane explained that she couldn’t get onto her flight because staff told her her passport was invalid due to “water damage”.
“They’re saying that I’m flying by China, and they might not let me through, and Paris might not let me through, but I’ve already flown twice with this passport to the US,” she seethed, almost in tears.
She said that because she’d gone to America twice on the passport when it was damaged, she “didn’t think it would be a problem”.
Content cannot be displayed without consent
In a follow-up video, Jane explained that she had to “sign a waiver” that said if she got turned away in Paris, she’d have to make the journey back to Australia, so she was nervous about what would happen, because she had an over-24-hour journey ahead of her.
She said that she hoped they’d be “super chill” as she arrived in Paris, and it turned out they were, as she managed to get in and could complete her business trip successfully.
In the comments, someone wrote: “I think the people at the check-in in Australia are just way too thorough. This happened to my sister. They told her she had to board the flight at her own risk as her passport had a water stain. But when we landed in Singapore, they did not even notice”.
Another defended the airport, however, saying “border security is paramount”. A woman warned her to “apply for a new passport” and to ensure she “keeps it perfect,” rather than allowing it to get water-damaged.
“What I wanna know, how do SO many people get water damage on their passports? Are ya’all taking them for a swim?” someone fumed.
A travel agent shared her advice, penning: “Travel agent here – a passport is a legal document, so, therefore, it must not have any damage. If an airline sends you to a place and you are denied entry, they receive a massive fine.
“Also, you can be detained on arrival for having a damaged passport. Much better to be denied here than to be put in jail or be turned around at the other end. If it’s damaged, it needs to be replaced.
“Some countries take this pretty seriously. I had a customer detained when their family went overseas and their kid spilt water on their passport and risked it. It’s not about intention, it’s about being safe”.
According to My British Passport, if a passport is too damaged, then the owner of the passport may not be able to fly. They share that the extent of the damage determines whether it can still be used.
Minor wear and tear might be acceptable, but if the passport cannot be read or the chip is damaged, boarding may be denied.
According to the Post Office, the HM Passport Office classifies a passport as damaged if the following conditions are met: the details are indecipherable, the laminate has lifted enough to allow the possibility of photo substitution and the bio-data page is discoloured.

The fallout of the police visit to the Queen Vic continued in tonight’s episode in EastEnders, as Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) realised her time as a landlady in the pub had come to an end. Now, fans have been left wondering if an exit is on the cards for the fan favourite.
It’s been a tough time for Linda lately, as she’s been left to run the pub alone, as her mother Elaine Peacock struggles with her split from husband George. However, Linda has her own problems to deal with, as she recently reached six months of sobriety, but it’s not been easy.
In tonight’s episode, Linda had a heart to heart conversation with Phil, as she detailed how hard it was to look after both herself and Elaine. “Sometimes you want to do the right thing but you’re in the hardest place to do it,” Phil said. “You’re an alcoholic running a pub.”

Later on, in emotional scenes, Linda was seen with Johnny, reminiscing on her relationship with Mick, when they had dreams of running a pub. With Mick gone, Linda couldn’t imagine happy times running the Vic anymore.
Instead, she told Johnny she’s been left fixated on the terrible things that have happened during her time there, including her killing of Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters). She then revealed to her mother Elaine that she wanted to sell up. However, Elaine wasn’t having any of it, as she snapped back: “Over my dead body!”
Fans were left in tears over Linda’s heartbreaking scenes with Johnny, with some left fearing an exit from Walford altogether would be on the way for Linda.
Taking to Reddit to discuss the episode, one fan penned: “Kellie Bright played an absolute blinder in today’s episode, but I hope she’s not leaving the Square,” as another responded: “I’ll be so upset if that happens!”

Another questioned: “So is Linda disappearing from the Square before Max comes back and notices he has another kid?”
Elsewhere, fans on X, formerly known on Twitter were praising Kellie Bright for her ground-breaking performance during the emotional episode. “Kellie Bright plays Landlady so convincing you forget she’s acting.
“Linda stepping down from all she’s ever known is a MASSIVE decision and I would say I’m more than apprehensive to see where she goes from here. No matter what, Kellie continues show her amazing talent #EastEnders,” said one.
Another emotional fan said: “Linda’s scenes have killed me off today,” as a third said: “Linda saying she can only picture the pain she’s gone through in the Vic and not the happy times with Mick has broken me. They have so many happy memories.”
What will a life outside of The Queen Vic look like for Linda?
Oti Mabuse was seen getting emotional on the Loose Women panel earlier today, as she reminisced on her time on the TV show DNA journey with her sister Motsi
Oti Mabuse broke down in tears on today’s episode of Loose Women as she spoke about her emotional journey on the show, DNA Journey.
During the episode of the ITV show, which aired in 2023, Oti and Motsi Mabuse explored their family history in South Africa, in which they discovered a WWII connection.
Their grandfather, Paulus Mabuse, fought for the British in the Native Military Corps during the war. During the ITV daytime show, Oti revisited a clip of herself and her sister Motsi when they found out, which moved her to tears.
In the clip, Oti and Motsi were seen breaking down in tears when they were given medals their grandfather received for his work in the armed forces.
Oti Mabuse broke down in tears as she reminisced about her time on ITV’s DNA Journey
‘It’s a good thing, it’s an amazing thing. Please don’t think we’re sad. One of the missing pieces that we’ve missed and needed to hear for so long, it’s a beautiful thing. We’re so grateful. These are tears of, “Oh my God!”‘
The pair said they had “no idea” that there were war medals in their family, as they learnt their grandfather fought for the British in World War II. Oti revealed that her grandfather, along with many others were promised land. However, they were relocated and left in the middle of nowhere.
Oti said it made her feel “horrendous” as she said both her and Motsi cried their make-up off. However, she said they felt liberated knowing where they come from. “Now I know that I’m a granddaughter of a soldier,” she told the panel, before the clip was played.
As they cut back to the studio after the clip was played, Oti wiped away he tears as she said: “It’s moving.
“Also, I think that we tried to look for something, we didn’t wait for the show to come to us. We also asked our parents, and you can see the generational trauma that it causes.

“My dad didn’t speak to his dad and so he didn’t know. All that they knew is maybe they drank, they went to the mine, and then they died. He didn’t know that his life served a purpose and he helped save the world.
“We’re here because of people like our grandad, and it means the world to us.”
Speaking on her experience on Loose Women, Oti said it was the “best show” she’d ever done. “It gave me something personally back. Our history in South Africa is really rough. Specifically with my family it was wiped out, so we had no way of getting any information.”
Tonight, Sam Thompson and Marvin Humes will be taking part in the ITV show to discover their family history. In the episode, the duo start off in Jamaica. There, JLS star Marvin finds out that his Great Grandma Blanche was not actually married to his Great Grandfather David James.
They had four children, but immediately after the fourth, Marvin’s Grandma Ruby, was born in 1930, David James left.
Meanwhile, Sam flies into a panic when he is told he has an ancestor who spent time in Jamaica. “It doesn’t sounds good, don’t say it..” he says. However, he is relieved to learn there is no slavery connection.
It comes after Sam admits to Marvin that he knew “nothing” about his family history before taking part in the show.
Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte was in tears after a heckler made comments about his late mother during the Diamondbacks’ game against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night at Rate Field.
That fan has been banned indefinitely from all MLB parks, The Times learned Wednesday morning.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo put his arm around Marte during a pitching change in the bottom of the seventh inning in an effort to comfort the two-time All Star. According to the Diamondbacks broadcast, Marte had also been crying while kneeling behind second base.
Lovullo later said on the Diamondbacks broadcast that he told Marte in that moment: “I love you and I’m with you, and we’re all together, and you’re not alone. And no matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy’s an idiot and shouldn’t have an impact on you.”
According to the Arizona Republic, Lovullo said he heard the comments made toward Marte during the player’s at-bat during the top of the seventh inning and that he and bench coach Jeff Banister asked for the responsible fan to be removed.
MLB confirmed that the heckler had been ejected from the stadium.
“We commend the White Sox for taking immediate action in removing the fan,” the league said in a statement emailed to The Times.
The Diamondbacks and White Sox did not immediately respond to requests for comments from The Times.
Marte is in his 11th MLB season. He played the first two years with the Seattle Mariners and has been with the Diamondbacks since 2017. His mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic the same year.
Marte did not speak to reporters after the Diamondbacks’ 4-1 win, during which he went two for four with a solo home run in the first inning.
“I’ve known Ketel for nine years, and he’s had some unbelievable, unbelievably great moments, and some hardships as well, and some really, really tough moments in his life, and I know those,” said Lovullo, who has been the Diamondbacks manager since 2017. “And the end of the day, we’re human beings, and we have emotions, and I saw him hurting, and I wanted to protect him.”

Love Island’s Harry Cooksley was overcome with emotion during a chat with Dejon as he reflected on his antics in the villa following his steamy kiss with Yasmin Pettet

Love Island star Harry Cooksley burst into tears during a conversation with Dejon. The gold trader and semi-professional footballer was dealt a huge blow after his actions caused upset in the villa.
Helena fumed she was “done” with Harry after he’d embarrassed her, but he was quick to attempt to defend his actions, replying: “We both said we were open to exploring new connections.” Helena later flipped out, saying that their agreement wasn’t to include going to the Hideaway and “necking” someone three times.

But it appears that Harry’s actions have caught up with him, and while they weren’t documented on the main show, Love Island: Aftersun revealed his emotional conversation. Dejon said: “If I could have it my way, you and Helena would be together. You two get along, you two, I can clearly see there’s a connection between you two.
“What matters is what you want, innit?” Responding, Harry said: “Yeah, we just have, like, nothing, do you know what I mean?” as he wiped away tears. He added: “Where it’s just like, we were good and then it’s just like, she just can’t even be around me. It’s just weird, man.
He admitted things would never be the same again(Image: loveisland/Instagram)
“Like I’ll never be the same now after the way I’ve acted, do you know what I mean?” Their dramatic split sent the villa into chaos with Harry attempting to pursue a third female co-star just hours later. Fans have since reacted to the Aftersun clip which was also shared on social media.
“Helena probably would go back to him I think, I just think she likes him too much,” said one. A second went on to add: “Oh look, it’s the consequences of his own actions!” Meanwhile, a third typed: “What does he expect after his behaviour. I would never give him another chance!”
“Crocodile tears. You knew what you were doing and you didn’t care. Next!” fumed another. But it’s not just viewers who Harry has angered. His mum appeared on the spinoff and joked that she had made the decision to disown him multiple times due to his actions in the Majorcan villa.

Host Maya Jama commented: “Imagine he’s just living his normal life, talking to the boys, you forget you’ve got cameras on you.” But when asked if she approves of his actions in the villa, his mum hit back saying: “No! I’ve disowned him. On more than one occasion. Harry who? Harry who?
“Oh my God, it just rolls off his tongue, I don’t know. How can you forget the camera’s on you?” Prior to jetting out to the villa, Harry revealed he had warned his mum that he hadn’t ruled out having sex in the villa if the connection was there.
“It’s not out of the question [that I’ll have sex on TV],” he said, adding: “If it feels right, then I will – and I have briefed my mum as well. So yeah, if it feels right and it’s the right time,e I’m definitely open to it.”
Five domestic medals and representing your country. A career to be proud of, certainly. What could top it? Your son emulating your success, of course.
That’s the case for Derek Ferguson, the former Rangers and Scotland midfielder whose son Lewis has become something of a cult hero in Italy.
The 25-year-old Bologna captain and midfielder helped end the club’s 51-year wait for a major trophy with victory in the Coppa Italia final against AC Milan.
Rumours now link the Scotland cap with Juventus, but Ferguson senior has urged his son to enjoy his recent success for now.
“I cried like a big baby at the final whistle,” Ferguson told BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound. “I just burst out greeting.
“When I hugged him, I wouldn’t let him go. He’s probably not used to that. To see the joy in his face and his team-mates, because they’re a great bunch of lads.
“Some players go through their whole career and they don’t win anything. You’ve got to savour these moments.
“I get a big excited. That’s the best night, best footballing night or day of my life. I won a few cups, a couple of league titles, but I never felt anything like that. It was just a special moment.
“We were allowed on to the park, which was quite surreal. The Bologna fans were still in, they were still singing. We’ve got some great pictures. He’s very happy where he is. Extremely happy.”
Wynne Evans broke down in tears on This Morning while speaking about his Strictly scandal, admitting that he told his girlfriend that it drove him to contemplate suicide
Joining them is a cool crew of celebs including Paddy McGuinness, Sam Quek and Tom Grennan. While the World XI team includes Richard Gadd, Edwin van der Sar, Martin Compston and Tony Bellew.
Sam has got a dual role: as well as playing on the pitch, he’s also been running and cycling 260 miles to hand-deliver the ball to Old Trafford and raise more money in a challenge called Matchball Mission for Unicef.
“One of the most special things about Soccer Aid for UNICEF is the togetherness that it brings out,” says Sam, 32. “I’ll never forget being sat at that training dinner table watching the television screens of UNICEF’s great work. People were shedding tears – everyone’s in it together. When we realised we’d helped to raise a record milestone of over £100 million since the game first began, the cheer that went up was bigger than the cheer of winning the actual game, which I think is quite telling.”
Sam Thompson and Louis Thomlinson have more than just Zara McDermott in common – they will both play for England at Soccer Aid 2025(Image: UNICEF/Soccer Aid Productions/Stella Pictures/REX/Shutterstock)
Tears also played a part when Sam crossed the finish line on Friday as he delivered the match ball to Old Trafford and got a congratulatory message from Prime Minister Kier Starmer.
He told the Mirror it’s “mad” that the Prime Minister said he was “inspiring”. “I can’t believe the prime minister knows my name,” Sam said. “I’m on double codeine and paracetamol… I am not going to lie, it hurts a lot,” Sam admitted as he walked to a nearby hotel.
The 32 year old, who has already raised over £1.5 million from the challenge, confessed: “I am totally broken – but so happy . The fact this challenge has grabbed everyone’s attention is just so incredible and I have just been blown away!”
And yesterday he was crying again on This Morning yesterday as he recalled the feat, telling Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley: “I’ve gotto stop crying! You’re making me so emotional, so many tears man.”

Soccer Aid host Dermot O’Leary is also returning and says half-time is his favourite part of the match because he gets to play pundit. “You have these special moments, it’s a laugh and you’re watching a game of football and you’re seeing goals,” says the 52-year-old.
Former One Direction star Louis lists playing with Ronaldinho as one of his greatest Soccer Aid memories, but for Jill, it’s buddying up with Football Factory star Danny Dyer that makes her day.
“He’s my type of player,” grins Jill, 38. “Strong tackles, probably swears a little bit too much, but I love that passion and football aggression!”

Their on-screen chemistry and complicated love story left White Lotus viewers enthralled – but that didn’t help stop rumours of a backstage feud between actors Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood after one particularly awkward social media interaction.
But the pair, who played mysterious Rick Hackett and his girlfriend Chelsea, have finally spoken out – revealing why they’ve only seen each other once since season three’s February premiere.
And Walton, unable to hold back his emotions, declared “I love this woman madly” about Aimee in a bid to set the record straight.
Two months since the show’s dramatic finale, the pair have reunited for Variety magazine as they got up close and personal once again. Speaking of the moment they met for the very first time, Aimee revealed he had texted her to come over for lunch. She said: “I didn’t know what to order. I was like, ‘Can you pick for me?’ I was so nervous.”
Walton added: “The minute she walked around the corner, I felt, ‘This is gonna work. Two minutes into the conversation, it felt like I’ve known this person for 100 years.”

Despite suggestions of a feud, Walton was also very keen to reiterate that Aimee is “so important” to him as he began to choke up.
He told the magazine: “There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me.” Turning to Aimee, he continued: “This is Goldie Hawn. This is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be. I’ll be on an island, I think Greece. But she’s special. There is no feud. She is love and I know that I am that to her. We care about each other very deeply.”
Aimee also responded to the feud rumours and Walton unfollowing her on Instagram, which she doesn’t appear fussed about at all.

“I think it’s such a comment on where we’re at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don’t give a s***e about Instagram,” she said.
While she had initially wanted to respond to the feud claims over the following, Aimee said that she decided to just “sit back and watch these people making something out of absolutely nothing”.
Explaining further about the unfollowing, Walton – whose first wife tragically died by suicide in 2004 – suggested that he simply wasn’t good with goodbyes and unfollowed anyone who was part of the show after filming wrapped up.
In tears, he said: “I knew what we had gone through, and I knew how close that we had gotten, and I needed to begin to process saying goodbye to Rick and Chelsea.”

Walton went on to say that he had just needed to take a step back from everyone after filming ended and he hasn’t spoken to anyone as he “couldn’t handle it”. He added: “Judge me or don’t. I don’t give a f*** what you think. This is my process. Rick means everything to me, and Chelsea means everything to me.”
As the interview wrapped up, Walton declared that he would follow Aimee on Instagram again, declaring it all “ridiculous” and that he would be friends with her “for f***ing ever”.
Crying again as he hugged his former co-star, Walton added: “I’m emotional because we haven’t been in the same city to ever talk about this. So for me, this is just so wonderful.”
After Sudan’s army recaptured the national capital region of Khartoum in March, tens of thousands of people returned to check on their homes and reunite with loved ones.
The joy of returning was tempered by the shock of seeing the damage caused during nearly two years under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that has been fighting the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), recognised by many Sudanese and the UN as the de facto authority in Sudan, since April 2023.
In a region whose hospitals and food and medicine stores had been systematically plundered by the RSF, many returnees started falling sick.

Omdurman falters
Many of the returnees had settled in Omdurman, one of the national capital’s three cities, where living conditions were slightly better than in the other cities. This is because several localities in Omdurman never came under the RSF’s control, insulating it from heavy clashes, pillaging, and looting.
Omdurman quickly became overcrowded, with “thousands of people [returning] from Egypt alone”, according to Dr Dirar Abeer, a member of Khartoum’s Emergency Response Rooms, neighbourhood committees spearheading relief efforts across the country.
The crowding, Dr Abeer said, meant an accelerated spread of cholera, an acute, highly contagious diarrhoeal infection that is endemic to Sudan and can be fatal if not treated.
“In areas south of the Nile in Omdurman, there are a lot of corpses rotting next to [or in] the Nile, and this has [partially] caused the spread of infection,” said Badawi, a volunteer in Omdurman who declined to give his full name due to the sensitivity of speaking in a warzone.
Cholera has become an epidemic in Sudan, spreading in several states, including White Nile and Gadarif, and killing hundreds in the last two weeks.
As in Khartoum, the spread was fuelled by overcrowding and a lack of essential services in these regions.
The waterborne disease could be stopped with basic sanitation and provisions, said Fazli Kostan, the project coordinator for Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF.
“But that’s not really possible right now,” he told Al Jazeera, referring to a lack of electricity to pump water since Omdurman’s electricity grids went down on May 14.
The RSF had fired a barrage of suicide drones that day, which took out major power stations and grids, consequently shutting down water treatment plants and causing a sharp rise in cases.
Deprived of safe drinking and bathing water, people have resorted to drinking contaminated water from the Nile, as well as scooping up water from the ground after it rains, Badawi said.
The SAF-backed Ministry of Health (MoH) reported a huge surge in daily cholera cases in the national capital region between May 15 and May 25, with at least 172 people dying between May 20 and May 27.
The UN says daily cases spiked from 90 to more than 815 in the latter half of May.
Patients waiting in the streets
Those who contract the disease often rush to the nearest hospital, further straining an already overwhelmed and ill-equipped health sector. However, local volunteers said many people do not experience life-threatening symptoms and that they would be better off staying at home and isolating themselves.
The overcrowding at hospitals has further exacerbated the spread of the disease and overstrained the already collapsing health sector, they explained.
“We do not have enough medication or medical tools, and the rate of people coming to the hospitals is far more than we can handle,” said Kareem al-Noor, a medic at al-Nao hospital in Omdurman.
“The [remaining hospitals] are at full capacity and people are also waiting for treatment, crowded on the streets,” al-Noor added.
Dr Abeer feels the SAF-backed health authorities are not doing enough to tackle the epidemic. While she acknowledged that the health sector was largely destroyed by the RSF, she believes the current health authorities could be doing more.
Al Jazeera submitted written questions to Dr Montasser Towarra, the MoH spokesperson, asking him what measures the ministry is undertaking to help volunteers and to provide basic provisions.
He had not answered by the time of publication.

Hunger exacerbates the crisis
Sudan is also suffering an acute hunger crisis.
Since the civil war, millions of Sudanese have struggled to feed their families due to spoiled harvests, the systematic looting of markets and food aid and the destruction of homes and livelihoods.
According to the UN, about 25 million people – more than half the population – currently suffer extreme food shortages.
Hunger can weaken bodies and lead to an acute increase in contagious diseases, according to Alex De Waal, an expert on Sudan and famine.
He noted that civilians – especially children – have always been more likely to die from diseases if they are also on the brink of starvation.
“We could see an excess of hundreds of thousands of deaths [due to these factors] over the next year,” warned De Waal.
The UN has also warned that up to one million children could die from cholera unless the spread is thwarted quickly.
The only way to thwart the health crisis is to repair basic provisions such as electricity and sewage systems to improve sanitation, said De Waal.
However, he believes that repairing essential services is not a priority for the army, which remains the de facto authority.
Al Jazeera sent written questions to SAF spokesperson, Nabil Abdullah, to ask if the army is planning on repairing vital resources such as bombed electricity grids.
Abdullah said, “These questions are not for the army, but for the Ministry of Health.”
Tawarra from the MoH also did not respond to these questions.
De Waal suspects the army is prioritising combat operations against the RSF.
“My sense is the army is too stretched financially and organisationally to prioritise anything other than fighting the war,” he told Al Jazeera.
