BAFTA TV winner takes swipe at the BBC during live show over Gaza documentary decision

A BAFTA winner broke the fourth wall during the awards’ ceremony to ask BBC bosses if they would cut footage of Gaza: Doctors Under Attack winning the prize for best film about current affairs

A BAFTA winner took aim at the BBC during the ceremony after a documentary about Gaza triumphed at the prestigious television awards ceremony.

The current affairs film Gaza: Doctors Under Attack picked up a major prize at the BAFTA Television Awards tonight (Sunday, 10 May). But the moment quickly turned political when executive producer Ben De Pear used his acceptance speech to question the broadcaster that originally commissioned the programme.

The one-off documentary, which features testimonies from Palestinian healthcare workers and documents attacks on medical facilities in Gaza, was initially commissioned by the BBC before being shelved over impartiality concerns. It was later broadcast by Channel 4 instead.

When he took to the stage after the film won in the current affairs category, Ben thanked the journalists involved in making the documentary before addressing the BBC directly.

He fired his parting shot, asking: “Finally, just a question for the BBC: given you dropped our film, will you drop us from the Bafta screening later tonight?”

BBC One was responsible for the TV coverage of the BAFTA Awards night, but did not air the ceremony live. The reception of each award was broadcast to the public around two hours after the actual events took place.

Ben was joined on stage by journalist Ramita Navia, who delivered a powerful speech about the findings of the investigation featured in the film.

He shared: ” Israel has killed over 47,000 children and women in Gaza. So far, Israel has bombed and targeted every single one of Gaza’s hospitals.

“It’s killed over 1,700 Palestinian doctors and health care workers. It has imprisoned over 400 in what the UN now calls the medicide. These are the findings of our investigation that the BBC paid for but refused to show.

“But we refuse to be silenced and censored. We thank Channel 4 for showing this film. Right now, there are over 80 Palestinian doctors and healthcare workers being held in detention centres that Israeli human rights groups describe as torture camps. We dedicate this award to them.”

The documentary was originally commissioned over a year ago by the BBC via their independent production company Basement Films.

However, the broadcaster delayed its release while an internal review into a separate Gaza-related programme was carried out. After that review process, the corporation ultimately decided not to air the film.

At the time, the BBC said it had concerns the programme could create “a perception of partiality that would not meet the high standards that the public rightly expect”.

The corporation also confirmed that production on the documentary had been paused while the review was was being conducted. Despite dropping the programme, the BBC said it remained committed to reporting on the conflict.

In a statement previously issued by the BBC, the broadcaster said it was “committed to covering the conflict in Gaza and has produced powerful coverage”.

She said: “If you didn’t know this already I’m a lesbian and my weakness used to be straight women.

“Also, I don’t think men knew how to pleasure their girlfriends well enough.”

Death in Paradise’s ‘best’ detective makes brutal swipe at BBC show after exit

Ardal O’Hanlon was a firm favourite on Death in Paradise as DI Jack Mooney before leaving in 2020

Death in Paradise star Ardal O’Hanlon has taken a savage swipe at the show, three years after his exit.

The actor portrayed DI Jack Mooney in the popular BBC crime drama, after joining in 2017. And during his stint, he became a firm favourite with fans, who often dubbed him the programme’s ‘best’ detective.

However, in 2020, Ardal left the cherished Caribbean-set show after three years. During his appearance on The One Show this week, the Irish star reflected on his time on the programme.

Revealing how filming Death in Paradise inspired his new book, A Plot to Die For, Ardal said: “I did 24 episodes. It must have been at least 30 murders. I didn’t even have to read the script, I knew who did it.”

Ardal went on: “When I was there I was always trying to dream up imaginative kind of murders.” Although he then said he “loves” the show, Ardal made a savage swipe at it’s storylines.

“But you would be thinking to yourself, ‘have we not done this plot before?’ You know, someone falling off a balcony again!” as his co-stars and show hosts laughed along with him.

Ardal was previously asked whether Jack Mooney leaving the show was a mutual decision. He told the Mirror: “From day one, it was always going to be like three series.

“As it turned out, I ended up doing part of a fourth series as well, before the handover to Ralf Little’s character [Neville Parker]. So to be honest with you, like you just wouldn’t be fit to do any more than that.”

He added: “It’s very gruelling, and you’re away from home for a very long time. So, you know, that was always the plan, and there was really very little that was going to change my mind about that.”

Ardal also went on to say that he believes the reason for the show’s success is the constant rotation of detectives. He stated: “I think the secret of the show’s success is constantly changing the lead detective, you know, before people get bored with them.”

What’s more, despite enduring “very harsh” weather conditions during filming of the show, Ardal branded the experience a “lovely job to do”.

Olivia Attwood reveals new tattoo as she takes huge swipe at her ex Bradley Dack for ‘breaking her heart’

OLIVIA Attwood has revealed her brand new tattoo as she added another ink to her collection, and made a dig at her ex Bradley Dack in the process.

The TV presenter has several tattoos for her footballer ex, including his shirt number – 23 – and one which says ’till death’; with the other half of the phrase, ‘do us part’, inked on the sportsman.

Whilst the tats may be forever, the couple split earlier this year after tying the knot in 2023 – with Olivia revealing he cheated on her multiple times throughout their decade long relationship.

And as Olivia headed to get inked again this week, she seemingly took a swipe at Bradley for the hurt he has caused her.

“I hope this one doesn’t break my heart,” she cryptically said while unveiling the new tat, alluding to the ones she has for her ex.

Olivia got the word ‘Savano’ inked on her arm in red, which she confirmed was a name, but didn’t provide who it was a tribute to.

Filming herself as she headed into the parlour, the star told the camera: “I clearly haven’t learned my lesson. I’m feeling romantic.

“This will be my third name tattoo, am I insane? I’m insane.”

Olivia’s admission that she’s feeling “romantic” had many fans wondering whether the ink is a nod to her new man Pete Wicks.

“Pete maybe?” commented one Instagram user under Olivia’s post.

Another asked: “Does it mean Pete in English?”

But with Olivia providing no context as to what or who Savano is, others kept guessing in the comments.

“It’s guna be a puppy I can feel it babes,” predicted a fan.

Olivia already has pups Lola and Stitch, who she is thought to be sharing custody of with Bradley.

She previously teased the tattoo was about a romantic partner, writing to Instagram that she would be getting a telling off from her mum.

Olivia said: “My mum is about to draggggg me to hell guys I’m scared”.

The Sun exclusively revealed that Olivia was dating long-time pal Pete earlier this year, following her split from Bradley.

Since then, the pair have enjoyed several dates and even a cosy getaway together, with the romance seemingly going strong.
