Three tips on how you can buddy up with your friends to save cash – from referrals to bulk buying

LIFE is better together – and that goes for your bank balance, too.

Buddying up can mean all sorts of savings, from everyday bills to days out.

We have three tips on how you can buddy up with your friends to save cash – from referrals to bulk buyingCredit: Getty

Here’s how to get a cash boost by sharing the love . . .

REFERRALS: If you’ve had great service from a company, why not let your pals know?

Many firms will reward you if you refer someone as a new customer.

This is true for most utility providers, as well as credit card firms.

Even just referring a mate to cashback site TopCashback will net you £20.

So next time you’re telling someone about a great offer, check if you can get something for the recommendation.

Just make sure you get sign-ups through your own unique links or codes to get the reward.

BULK BUYS: If you’re buying tickets for an event, always try to buy with friends and then split the total between you.

This means that if there are booking fees you’ll only pay one between you.

Plus, many venues offer multi-ticket savings that are worth looking for.

PAY DAY Watch Martin Lewis reveal three ways to get cashback on Christmas spending, ITV

For example, you can pay £24.50 to visit the Minecraft Experience in London, but this reduces to £18.50 each if there are seven or more tickets bought through a group bundle.

FRIEND FOR THE ROAD: Travelling can be expensive but you can ease the pressure with others in tow.

Ride app Uber easily allows you to add extra pick-ups on the way to a destination and divide the bill with contacts who also have an account.

If you have a pal who you frequently travel with, the Two Together railcard is £35 a year but gives you a third off off-peak fares when you travel together.

Or with GroupSave, groups of three or more adults can get a third off off-peak train fares when travelling together.

For regular journeys, such as to the office, why not ask work friends if they fancy lift sharing and you can take it in turns to drive.

You’ll save on petrol and get a little added company too.

Four tips on buying second hand to save your cash and the planet

OUR wardrobes are stuffed with 1.6billion unworn clothes.

So it is best for the planet — and your bank balance — to stop buying new and instead swap your old stuff for other people’s cast-offs.

Oxfam is having Second Hand September to encourage people to buy in charity shopsCredit: Oxfam

During Second Hand September, Oxfam is encouraging people to hunt down a bargain and find unique pieces that will make you stand out from the crowd.

TREASURE HUNT: Trawling high street charity shops is a great way to spot a gem.

Abi Owen, online shop merchandiser for Oxfam, says: “Charity shops are full of wonderful, unique finds, so it’s worth having an open mind to see what might catch your eye.

“As autumn begins, timeless items such as cable-knit jumpers and checked shirts are the perfect pre-loved find.”

READ MORE MONEY SAVING TIPS

WONDERS ON THE WEB: If you can’t get to a second-hand shop, or you have something specific in mind, look online.

Lose yourself on Vinted or eBay and, to support a good cause, search for charity shops on the internet. Many also have their own online shops.

SEPTEMBER SURPRISES: At Oxfam’s online store (onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk) you can narrow your search by price, size or designer.

We found Ralph Lauren sunglasses for under £9.99, a Tommy Hilfiger jumpsuit for £12.99 and a wedding dress for £30.

During Second Hand September, there is also a range of offers, including free delivery until Tuesday and ten per cent off when signing up for Oxfam’s newsletter.

BEST BUYS: Make the most of your money and bag a second-hand bargain that you will wear lots of times.

Here’s how to do festival looks on a budget – and save the planet

Denim will never go out of fashion and is stacked up in charity shops.

Abi says: “Whether it is a pair of jeans or a classic jacket, they are perfect for styling up or down.

“Plus, they’re better when they’ve been worn in.

“Accessories are a brilliant second-hand item to shop for, too. A good belt or some gorgeous earrings can complete a look.

“Keep your eyes peeled for details like a tartan scarf to pull an outfit together.”

Four delicious ways to make the most of the apple harvest

APPLES are ripening and tumbling from branches across gardens and hedgerows.

Or you may find that generous neighbours or friends with apple trees are offering the fruit for free.

A smiling, pretty, elderly woman in glasses and an apron is working in a summer garden, picking fruits, harvesting against a background of flowers. Hobbies in retirement

7

Read our top tips to make the most of apples at this time of year

Here’s how to make the most of the harvest . . .

APPLE STORE: Apples are often stored in fruit bowls, but they will last longer in the fridge.

The fruit also emits a gas that can speed up the ripening of other produce such as oranges, giving another reason to keep them separated.

NICELY PUDD: Apple pie or crumble is the perfect autumnal dessert. Crumbles are slightly quicker to make and great with kids. Use the following recipe from Tesco. Peel and core and cut three or four cooking apples into chunks.

READ MORE MONEY SAVING TIPS

Pop the fruit in a saucepan with two tablespoons of caster sugar, and two tablespoons of water, cooking until the apples have softened.

If you have a glut of apples, you could prepare double or triple the mix and freeze portions for using at a later date.

Pop in a greased ovenproof dish. Then mix 110g of self-raising flour, 40g of demerara sugar, 40g of diced salted, butter and two tablespoons of rolled oats in a bowl until it’s breadcrumb texture.

Add to the apple mix before baking for around 45minutes until golden.

GO DRY: Dried apples are a great healthy snack — perfect for lunchboxes.

Slice the apples thinly and bake for a few hours on a low heat.

I’m a foodie and my Air Fryer apple pie recipe is always such a hit and you only need three ingredients

The longer you leave them in, the crispier they become. Then store in an air-tight container.

JUICE IT: Use apples to make a delicious juice without a juicer. Start by chopping and deseeding three or four apples.

Boil and cover with around 120ml of water until the apples are soft and mushy.

Line a colander with muslin cloth and put over a bowl before pouring in the cooled mixture.

Press down on the mixture and let the bowl collect the juice. You can then add honey or lemon juice to taste.

HAVING a busy summer, with no time to whip up a tasty lunch?

These quick, easy, affordable recipes for batch cooking will keep you fed all week.

Store in freezer bags or old takeaway tubs for no-fuss dining.

Here’s how to do it . . .

PASTA POWER: This no-cook wonder is perfect for hot days.

Simply boil 500g penne until al dente, then mix with two tins of drained tuna, four tablespoons of mayo, a handful of sweetcorn and some diced cucumber.

The creamy, crunchy combo makes four generous servings and keeps fresh in the fridge for up to three days.

For extra zing, add a squeeze of lemon or a sprinkle of chilli flakes.

SALAD SAVIOUR: Massage 200g of kale with olive oil to soften the leaves, then toss with 400g of fluffy cooked couscous, crumbled feta and charred roasted peppers.

Packed with Mediterranean flavours, this veggie bowl stays fresh for 72 hours — ideal for work lunches or lazy dinners.

Want more protein? Throw in some leftover grilled chicken or chickpeas.

BBQ BEANS: For a protein-packed staple, soak 500g of dried butter beans overnight then slow-cook with two tins of chopped tomatoes, a tablespoon of smoked paprika and a drizzle of honey.

The smoky-sweet beans can be frozen for three months and they are perfect with crusty bread or as a veggie BBQ side.

They can also make a great baked potato topping or a lovely addition to morning eggs.

COOL SOUP: Blitz two chopped cucumbers with 500ml of natural yoghurt, a garlic clove and handful of fresh mint for a refreshing, chilled soup that can be kept in a tub in the fridge until needed.

Five tips to give leftover vegetables a second chance with a ‘wow’ factor

HAVING family over soon but stuck for ideas as well as cash?

You could jazz up dishes, for added wow factor, just by using leftover uncooked veg to knock up some pickle or relish. Here’s some ideas . . .

RECYCLE OLD JARS: You will need jars to put your pickle or relish in, and could get a 12-pack of 300ml ones at Hobbycraft for £9, but the cheapest way to get started is to reuse empty jam or sauce jars.

Give them a good wash, or pop in the dishwasher then use boiling water to rinse.

TANGY TREAT: Pickled red onions are easy. Finely slice the onion, pop in a jar, cover with white wine vinegar, £2 at Sainsbury’s, and add a pinch of salt and of sugar.

Put the lid on and shake, leave for 20 minutes before trying — adding more vinegar, salt or sugar as you think best.

Pop in the fridge and use on everything from tacos to sarnies.

SPICE OF LIFE: Slice up any spare chilli peppers and pop in a jar.

Then put 100ml of water in a pan and heat on the stove with a few teaspoons of sugar and one of salt, plus you could add mustard seeds or bay leaves from your spice rack. Bring to the boil then pour the liquid into the jar.

Carefully put the lid on the jar and leave to cool. Once at room temperature, store in the fridge and the chillis should keep for a few months.

CRUNCHY RELISH: Use up any mini- cucumbers or radishes to make a tasty relish.

Slice your veg and keep it crunchy by adding to a sieve with ice cubes for ten to 20 minutes before pickling.

I’ve figured out how to make the perfect fried eggs – it’s so simple, works every time and you don’t even need any oil

Make a brine following the same instructions as before, leave to cool and add to the jar with your veg.

You can also add onion, and herbs such as dill, for extra flavour.

PASS THE CARROTS: The key for great pickled carrots is to cut them up into very fine matchsticks or use a peeler to create shavings.

Follow the same brine instructions as above, but add some rice wine vinegar if you have it, as well as a dash of fish sauce.

Once cooled and refrigerated, you can use these on Asian dishes such as dumplings or stir fries.

Five ways to upcycle your empty booze bottles into something new

IF you had a boozy bank holiday weekend, you might have a few empty bottles lying around.

Before you ditch them, try these great upcycling tricks to turn them into something new.

LIGHT WORK: Clean out wine bottles and remove labels by soaking them in warm, soapy water.

Fill with battery-powered fairy lights, £3 at Poundland, for an instant glow and garden ambiance.

FLOWER POWER: Turn gin bottles into sleek vases by soaking off labels and painting with a light-coloured beige or cream matte paint using tester pots, from £1.50 at B&Q.

It will give your vase an on-trend ceramic look. Wrap twine around the neck for rustic charm. It will be perfect for displaying garden cuttings or supermarket blooms.

CLEAN UP: Ditch ugly detergent bottles by decanting them into a pretty empty bottle.

Gin bottles especially are a great swap for holding your washing-up liquid instead of the unsightly plastic bottles.

You can even buy a budget pourer or pump to place on top of your bottle for £2.50 at amazon.co.uk.

MINI SAVER: When thoroughly washed, use slim half-sized vodka bottles as toothbrush holders or a place to hold your cotton wool in the bathroom.

If you are crafty, these smaller bottles also are great to stash away for birthdays and Christmas gifts, just add homemade bath salts for a thoughtful budget present.

BEER WE GO: Carefully cut the tops off clean beer bottles with a £5 glass cutter from Homebase or Screwfix — it is a lot easier to do this than you would think.

I’m an upcycling furniture artist – I found an absolute gem that is packed with loads of fantastic treasure for the home

Then use them as mini tumblers, or mini plant pots to grow your own herbs, taken from sprigs of supermarket bunches. Try growing basil or mint and place on a sunny windowsill.

Three savvy ways to use price comparison sites for your shopping

YOU may use price comparison sites to get the best deals for your broadband or car insurance – but probably don’t do the same when shopping.

Whether you’re looking for great buys for your home and garden, a good deal on a new summer outfit or simply to drive down the cost of your weekly shop, there are online tools that can help you get the best price.

FANCY FEATURES: For homeware, tech, clothes and more, compare prices using sites like PriceRunner, Idealo, Google Shopping and PriceSpy.

Check across different sites to make sure you get the best deal.

They all have clever features to help you make the savviest shopping choices.

Idealo is one that allows you to scan barcodes in store to check if a product is cheaper online

READ MORE MONEY SAVING TIPS

With the PriceRunner on the Klarna app, you can access an AI assistant who will interpret what you’re looking for and help you find the right item.

PAST PRICES: The sites’ price-tracking tools also help you to check if deals are as good as they look.

They show price history, so you can see how the cost of an item has gone up and down.

That way you can judge whether you might get a better deal by waiting.

If you’re shopping via Amazon, then CamelCamelCamel will show you how much items have previously sold for.

Use the tool to check out the offers during Amazon’s Everyday Essentials Week, starting on Wednesday.

Cut car insurance costs and save money

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: For grocery shopping, download the Trolley app or log on to trolley.co.uk.

You can search for any item you’d find in the big supermarkets, including own brands, to see the best prices.

On the app, you can scan barcodes, create shopping lists and get price alerts when an item changes price.

It shows Heinz Tomato Ketchup, 1.35kg, is currently £4.92 at Asda or £6 at Morrisons.
