Dutchman Gian van Veen shocked world number one Luke Humphries to win his first PDC title at the European Championship in Dortmund.
The 23-year-old beat countryman and four-time champion Michael van Gerwen 11-9 in the semi-finals before holding his nerve to come through a tense match with Humphries 11-10.
“I said it to my girlfriend when I walked on stage, whenever I win my first TV title I wouldn’t cry – and here I am crying,” Van Veen told ITV Sport.
“I will never forget this moment or even this crowd. It is phenomenal to win my first major in Germany.
“I said to Luke after the game, when he hit the bull to go 10-10, that is why he is world number one. That’s how amazing person Luke is. It is definitely a night to never forget.”
Thieves broke into the Louvre museum in Paris on Sunday by using a crane to smash a window, stealing valuable jewelry from the area housing the French crown jewels before escaping on motorbikes. The French government highlighted concerns about security, noting a lack of investment in the museum, which had 8.7 million visitors in 2024.
The robbery occurred around 9:30 a.m. while the museum was open to the public. Culture Minister Rachida Dati stated that the thieves acted professionally, as the entire theft took only about four minutes. Footage showed they entered calmly, smashed display cases, and left without harming anyone. Dati mentioned that one stolen piece of jewelry was recovered outside the museum, believed to be the broken crown of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez indicated that three or four thieves used a crane positioned on a truck to access the museum and steal jewels of significant historical value. A specialized police unit has been assigned to investigate the incident. Despite the alarm, no injuries were reported, and the museum closed for the day due to “exceptional reasons. ” Earlier, Louvre officials had requested government assistance for renovations and improved security to protect its artworks from organized crime, highlighting a long-standing issue with securing major museums.
Monaco’s 204th-ranked Vacherot ousts Djokovic before his cousin beats Medvedev to set up a rare tennis masters final.
Cousins Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech will meet in a dream final of the Shanghai Masters after pulling off stunning semifinal upsets of former champions Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.
World number 204 Vacherot became the lowest ranked player to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final after he defeated a struggling Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday.
Hours later, Rinderknech knocked out former US Open champion Medvedev 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to complete an extraordinary family double.
“I can’t even say it’s a dream because I don’t think even one person in our family dreamt about it,” Rinderknech said about facing his cousin in Sunday’s final.
“It was a dream that came out of nowhere.”
Qualifier Vacherot troubled Djokovic with drop shots and punishing rallies, and the Serbian fourth seed, struggling to turn, took medical timeouts during both sets.
“This is just crazy. … Just to be on the other side of the court [from Djokovic] was an unbelievable experience,” said Vacherot, who became the first player from Monaco to reach an ATP Tour final in the open era.
Djokovic broke Vacherot in the first game of the match, but the 26-year-old immediately broke back and had built a 4-3 lead when the Serbian took his first medical timeout.
Vacherot won the next two games with ease to secure the first set and put Djokovic through a 12-minute battle for the first game of the second set, which the 38-year-old managed to win after saving two break points.
A double fault led to Djokovic losing his serve as Vacherot took a 5-4 lead that tipped the set in his favour.
“Such a pleasure to play at least once against you. Don’t retire,” Vacherot told Djokovic as both players shook hands at the net.
Four-time Shanghai Masters winner Djokovic congratulated Vacherot, who is set to break into the top 50 in the world rankings.
“Going from qualifications, it’s an amazing story. I told him at the net that he’s had an amazing tournament but more so his attitude is very good and his game was amazing as well,” the world number five told reporters.
“So it’s all about him. I wish him all the best in the finals, and the better player won today.”

‘I’m going to fight like crazy’
World number 54 Rinderknech threw caution to the wind after losing the first set to Medvedev, getting an early break and saving five break points in a 12-minute game to go 3-0 up in the second.
Medvedev struggled with the 30-year-old Frenchman’s strong returns, finding the net from the baseline multiple times as Rinderknech won the second set 6-2 as Vacherot watched from the stands.
A decisive break secured the third set for Rinderknech as Medvedev saved the first match point with a 207km/h (129mph) serve down the middle but gave away the second with a double fault.
“I was like, ‘You know what? Maybe I’m going to lose, but I’m going to fight like crazy,’” Rinderknech said.
“‘I’m going to make him tired for tomorrow, and at least I’m going to help [Valentin] to at least try to start the match a little bit ahead physically.’
“Then somehow I got the break and then another one finished the set, and then I was like, ‘You know what? I’m just going to try everything and give it my best,’ and somehow it worked out.”

A team in need of a savior found one in the unlikeliest of places and most familiar of faces.
Jerry Neuheisel, the UCLA tight ends coach who was elevated to playcaller only four days before his winless team faced a top-10 opponent, dialed up an offensive plan that produced points on each of the Bruins’ first five drives.
The fun let up only momentarily on the way to UCLA’s stunning 42-37 victory over No. 7 Penn State on Saturday afternoon at the Rose Bowl, fans providing their giddy verdict with a chant they unleashed from the opening drive through the fourth quarter.
“Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!”
The game turned tense late, requiring a defensive stop after UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava was stuffed on fourth down, giving the ball back to Penn State at the Bruins’ 32-yard line with two minutes left.
The Nittany Lions reached the nine before UCLA defensive back Scooter Jackson surged into the backfield and dropped quarterback Drew Allar for a three-yard loss with 37 seconds left.

After Bruins punter Will Karoll intentionally stepped out of the back of the end zone for a safety to pull Penn State within five points, the Nittany Lions could not cross midfield before the game ended.
After the final play, Neuheisel was hoisted into the air by his grateful players, winless no more.
“He puts that belief in us that we can go out there and execute,” Iamaleava said after accounting for five touchdowns, “and he put together a great game plan for us.”
The question remains of whether this was a turning point or a temporary reprieve in a lost season, but at least for the moment everyone associated with the team could deeply exhale.
Neuheisel said he found out he would be calling plays at 5 p.m. Tuesday. He estimated that he’s had three hours of sleep since then, the Bruins still conducting walk-throughs to master the offense Saturday morning.
“We had two days to practice the new game plan,” Neuheisel said, and all they did was believe.”
Masterfully running the Neuheisel‘s offense was Iamaleava, who finally had something to show for his cross-country move from Tennessee that made him the talk of the offseason in college football.
“Big-time players make big-time plays, and that’s what he did out there,” UCLA interim coach Tim Skipper said while clutching the game ball.

Iamealeava ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more as the Bruins (1-4 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) nearly doubled their previous high point total this season. Facing third and goal midway through the fourth quarter, Iamaleava dropped back before taking off and racing into the front right corner of the end zone. He then zipped a two-point conversion pass into the back of the end zone to Kwazi Gilmer that gave UCLA a 42-28 advantage.
In what might have qualified as his best day as a college player, Iamaleava completed 17 of 24 passes for 166 yards and ran 16 times for 128 yards, including a nifty 52-yard gain in which he spun away from a defender.
Given the circumstances, Neuheisel’s playcalling debut might have been a more valiant effort than his coming off the bench as UCLA’s quarterback in 2014 to lead his team to a comeback victory over Texas.
Remember, those Bruins were nationally ranked.
This version had been nationally lampooned while averaging 14.2 points a game on the way to four consecutive losses that led to the departures of coach DeShaun Foster, defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe and offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri. Sunseri’s leaving prompted the Bruins to elevate Neuheisel and bring in Noel Mazzone, his old UCLA offensive coordinator and boss for one season at Texas A&M, as an analyst and advisor to his old protege.
Together they devised a scheme that helped the Bruins roll up 446 yards of offense.
“Nobody in the world expected us to win, let’s be honest here,” UCLA safety Key Lawrence said.
The celebrating started at halftime, UCLA players leaping excitedly and flapping their arms as they ran toward the locker room after Mateen Bhaghani’s 54-yard field goal gave the Bruins a stunning 27-7 lead.
To that point, UCLA’s domination was as complete as its failures had been in losing its first four games. The Bruins scored on all five first-half drives, recovered an onside kick and outgained the Nittany Lions, 285-92, in total yardage.

Signs of what was to come started on the opening drive.
After winning the coin toss and electing to receive, UCLA quickly marched for a score on its opening drive. Gilmer took a short pass from Iamaleava and extended the ball across the goal line for an 11-yard touchdown that gave the Bruins a 7-0 advantage.
Those chants of “Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!” filled the stadium after UCLA took its first lead of the season after 244 minutes 34 seconds of football.
The fun was just getting started for the Bruins. Bhaghani immediately unfurled an onside kick that Kanye Clark recovered, leading to a field goal and a 10-0 cushion on a day that belonged to the blond-haired coach and lifelong Bruin whose debut as a playcaller figures to lead to many new opportunities.
“Just a special, special day,” Neuheisel said. “I don’t know where it would rank, I don’t know how to really put it into words, I just am glad I’m the one who gets to be in it right now.”
American Taylor Fritz stunned world number one Carlos Alcaraz as Team World turned things around to take a 9-3 lead on day two of the Laver Cup.
Team Europe had led 3-1 after Friday but Team World won all four matches in San Francisco on Saturday to turn the tide before Sunday’s final day.
Fritz, who had not beaten Spaniard Alcaraz in three previous meetings, sealed a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 victory in the final singles match of the day.
The world number five said it was one of the best moments of his career so far.
“I think I take almost more pride in this one because I feel like, start to finish, I won it, I earned it,” he said.
“A lot of the decisive points in the match weren’t so much him giving them to me – I felt like I made it happen in those moments. Just start to finish, I played an amazing match. I’m hoping this can be a sign of things to come.”
Trusting her natural ability, and the work she is doing with coach Wim Fissette to further improve, has also been the key to Swiatek turning around her season.
After a slump by her lofty standards at the start of the year, the former long-time world number one started the final major of the season as most people’s pick for the trophy.
The recently crowned Wimbledon champion, who won the US Open in 2022, underlined her credentials on the American hard courts with victory at the Cincinnati Open.
Swiatek was far from her best against 29th seed Kalinskaya, with a low serve percentage particularly damaging, and her relief was demonstrated by an animated celebration.
“I’m happy that I came back, kept being positive and figured it out,” Swiatek added.
In the other night-session match, Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia made light work of Greece’s Maria Sakkari after the pair took to court at 11:15pm local time.
Haddad Maia, seeded 18th, moved fast to wrap up a 6-1 6-2 victory, booking a last-16 match with Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova.

Britain’s Alfie Davis stunned defending champion Gadzhi Rabadanov to win the PFL lightweight tournament by unanimous decision in Charlotte, North Carolina.
London’s Davis landed the more damaging strikes to edge a close contest with all three judges scoring it 48-47 in the 33-year-old’s favour.
Davis was overcome with emotion as the result was read out as he won $500,000 (£369,000) – a prize he described as “life-changing”.
“I don’t know what to say, I’ve worked so hard for this,” said Davis.
“To be a champion like Gadzhi, I respect him and have watched him for so many years – he and his team are amazing. To beat someone like that is a dream come true.”
Davis reached the final after enjoying the best spell of his 11-year career with wins over Clay Collard and Brent Primus.
In Russia’s 32-year-old Rabadanov, however, he was facing last year’s champion and a fighter on a 12-fight win streak.
Davis said he had suffered from a lack of confidence in the past, but has put that behind him with a string of impressive displays.
His new-found confidence was on full display as he danced his way to the cage, before being introduced as someone whose “charisma can be seen from space”.
Teenager Victoria Mboko produced the shock of the tournament as she defeated top seed Coco Gauff to reach the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open in Montreal.
The 18-year-old Canadian, who was handed a wildcard entry into the main draw, needed just 62 minutes to defeat the two-time Grand Slam champion 6-1 6-4 and continue her meteoric rise up the rankings.
Mboko converted four of five break points against Gauff and has now dropped just one set in four matches at the tournament.
“Coming into the match, I was so locked in,” Mboko said.
“I tried to keep my composure as much as I could, especially playing in front of so many people. This is a very special experience for me.”
She began the year ranked 333rd in the world, and proceeded to win 22 successive matches without dropping a set on her way to securing five titles on the second-tier ITF Tour.
Mboko entered the tournament ranked 85th, but victory against Gauff will move her up to 53rd, and in the quarter-finals she will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, ranked just two places higher.
Gauff once again struggled with her serve, committing six double faults to take her tournament total to 43 in three matches.
“I think she’s going to have a lot of success on tour. I’m sure we’re going to have many more battles in the future,” Gauff said.
Meanwhile, second seed Iga Swiatek cruised into the last 16 with a 6-2 6-2 victory against Eva Lys.
In Toronto Casper Ruud suffered a 6-4 7-5 defeat against Karen Khachanov, before top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals with a walkover victory against Francisco Cerundolo.
Fifth seed Holger Rune threw away an early lead to lose 6-4 2-6 3-6 to Australian Alexei Popyrin.
Maria went an early break up in the first set, drawing errors out of Anisimova, before a thumping backhand winner from the American put it back on terms.
However, Maria kept Anisimova on the move, visibly frustrating her, and a netted forehand gave Maria the break back, before she served out the set with ease.
The numbers told the story, with Anisimova committing 10 unforced errors to Maria’s three in the opener, and the momentum stayed with the German as she broke at the first chance in the second set.
A mammoth fourth game saw seven deuces and Maria saving two break points for 3-1, before a brilliant scamper to a drop shot in the next allowed her to go a double break up.
Anisimova, who won the WTA 1000 title in Qatar earlier this year, went for broke, pummelling her shots to rescue a break and keep in touch.
But Maria, backed by the packed crowd, kept her nerve to serve out to 30 and secure her place in Queen’s history.
Maria is due to compete at the Nottingham Open, which begins on Monday, but said she will celebrate with her family first.
“This doesn’t happen every week so we have to celebrate with something,” she added.
“I think the kids will probably want some crepes with Nutella!”
There was reason for Raducanu to be confident against Zheng, who is still finding her feet on the grass court and has a serve that can waver when under pressure.
World number 37 Raducanu had also made relatively serene progress through her first two matches, dropping just eight games across four sets.
But, as Raducanu found against Iga Swiatek in Melbourne and Paris, and Coco Gauff in Italy, there is a different, consistent level needed to beat the players for who winning is a habit.
In an edgy start, Raducanu put pressure on Zheng’s serve while saving break points in her own games.
But Zheng broke through at the seventh attempt, a blistering backhand down the line silencing the crowd, who had earlier voiced their displeasure after Zheng had to change her shoes midway through the game.
Raducanu kept up the pressure, creating an immediate break-back opportunity, but Zheng’s huge groundstrokes kept her at bay, and a rushed forehand into the net handed the top seed the first set.
Raducanu left court for a medical timeout on her back but took advantage as Zheng’s first serve all but disappeared on her return.
With the wind picking up, Raducanu produced a series of ruthless returns to Zheng’s second serve and quickly found herself 3-0 up.
But Zheng wrestled a break back and upped her intensity when needed, creeping forward to attack Raducanu’s serve. A double fault handed Zheng the break back and she reeled off four games in a row to close out the match.
Despite the loss, there will be enough for Raducanu to be confident she can perform well on the grass – but she will know there is still a gap to be bridged when it comes to challenging the very best.
An outdoor fight in the United Kingdom is never without its risks. Fans wore ponchos and reporters scrambled for shelter as heavy rain fell throughout the evening.
The downpour eased when Brisbane native Huni made his ring walk to a predictably hostile reception, before the mood shifted as a steely-faced and focused Wardley emerged.
Bathed in the golden glow of the floodlight, the Ipswich-born boxer soaked in the moment he had been dreaming of since turning professional.
The opening rounds saw both fighters cautiously size each other up.
Huni – well-schooled and boasting serious amateur pedigree – landed a thudding left hook followed by a sharp right in the third.
Wardley, who only took up boxing at 19 and turned pro after just four white-collar bouts, was known for his raw power and ability to dig deep.
But it was Huni landing the cleaner shots, especially with that left hook.
With only two contests beyond six rounds in his career, Wardley began to feel the pace. His timing was off and a grimace in the seventh said it all after Huni whipped in a punishing right hook.
Just when it seemed the homecoming would turn into a nightmare, Wardley achieved one of the biggest turnarounds in recent times to send the crowd into a frenzy.
After his beloved football team’s recent relegation from the Premier League, with the Tractor Boys failing to register a single home league win in 2025, Wardley brought the good times back to Ipswich.
