Oct. 24 (UPI) — Alaska Airlines late Thursday announced it was “actively restoring operations” after issuing a ground stoppage due to an IT outage.

The airline said the temporary ground stop was caused by an IT outage affecting all operations.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” it said on X.

The FlightAware air traffic tracking website states that 54 Alaska Airlines flights were canceled as of early Friday, though it was unclear which, if any, were related to the ground stoppage.

The ground stop comes as flights in the United States have been impacted by the ongoing government shutdown that began Oct. 1, during which many air traffic controllers are ordered to work without pay. The shutdown has worsened staffing shortages, leading to an increase of canceled and delayed flights.

In July, Alaska Airlines issued a system-wide ground stoppage due to an IT issue.

Deontay Wilder vs Tyrrell Herndon LIVE RESULTS: Bronze Bomber returns with controversial stoppage win – updates

Exclusive – Wilder’s next fight

Nelson Lopez Jr – who promoted Wilder’s comeback fight – told SunSport the American’s next comeback fight is already pencilled in.

And then an anticipated showdown against Anthony Joshua has been targeted for next year.

Nelson said: “We got a tentative deal and we’re just going one by one.

“We have the next one set up, this one set up, nothing solid for the third one – you know how boxing is, there’s no path of how you succeed.

“We have to get over this, so anything can happen. We got to get over the next one. Anything can happen.

“And then, you know maybe Eddie (Hearn) will sit at the table and see what we can do something with AJ.”

Wilder speaks

Deontay Wilder said: “It felt great. Thanks to my opponent, I appreciate the work.

“I’ve been laid off for a long time, getting myself back together, repairing myself emotionally.

“It is just nice to be back in the ring. This is a new beginning for me.”

Wilder floors Herndon

Deontay Wilder floored Tyrrell Herndon twice before winning his comeback fight in seven rounds.

The former WBC heavyweight world champion returned to the ring in Wichita, Kansas against little-known Herndon.

And he did so without a win since 2022 – having lost on points to Joseph Parker before a crushing KO defeat to Zhilei Zhang.

But Wilder did get back in the win column after dropping Herndon first in round two with a left hook then with a combination in the seventh.

Angel City gives up goal in stoppage time, losing to North Carolina

Brianna Pinto scored just seven minutes after entering off the bench for the North Carolina Courage in a 2-1 win against Angel City on Saturday.

The Courage (4-5-3) had lost all three of their previous visits to BMO Stadium.

Cortnee Vine had made it 1-0 in the first minute of the game when she slid the ball into the net from a cross by Manaka Matsukubo.

Riley Tiernan scored her seventh goal of the season to bring Angel City (4-5-3) level at 1-1 in the 11th minute, heading in a cross from Gisele Thompson.

The winner came from a scramble in the box in the fifth minute of stoppage time. After Angel City defender Miyabi Moriya blocked a shot on the line, Pinto scooped up the ball and fired it in from five yards out.

Callum Simpson beats Ivan Zucco with stoppage win to clinch European title

Super-middleweight Callum Simpson picked himself up off the canvas twice before securing a stunning stoppage victory over Ivan Zucco in his home town of Barnsley.

Simpson, 28, made history as he maintained his unbeaten record (18-0) to become the town’s first European champion when he stopped Italy’s Zucco in the 10th round at Barnsley FC’s Oakwell Stadium.

The Englishman dedicated the win to his sister, Lily-Rae Simpson, who died aged 19 in a car accident in Greece last year.

“Not once did I give up, in those last few rounds I’ll be honest I started thinking about my little sister Lily,” Simpson said.

“I’ll be honest, I just thought I had to push for her and for everybody. This time last year, Lily was sat up here cheering me on and she was there with me tonight when it got tough, when it got hard.

“From round eight, I thought, ‘I’ve got to dig deep, I’ve got to keep pushing, I’ve got to do it for her’. She was with me tonight.”

With the win, Simpson puts himself in prime contention for a step up to world level by the end of the year.

But the raucous Oakwell crowd feared the worse with only eight seconds on the clock in in the opening round when Zucco downed Simpson with a hard left hand.

Simpson shook off the early knockdown and buzzed Zucco with some fine punching of his own, but the home favourite was caught too square in the third round, dropped for the second time by a left hand.
