Dodgers’ Alex Vesia and his wife mourn death of baby daughter

Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia and his wife, Kayla, announced on Instagram on Friday that their baby daughter, Sterling, died on Oct. 26 — a tragic loss that caused Vesia to miss the Dodgers’ appearance in the World Series last week.

“Our little angel, we love you forever & you’re with us always,” the Vesias wrote. “There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her.”

The Vesias had been expecting the birth of Sterling, their first child, during the Dodgers’ postseason run. Her death came during the World Series, forcing Vesia to step away from the club.

The day before Game 1 of the World Series, the Dodgers publicly announced Vesia was not with the team because of a “deeply personal family matter.” The Dodgers left him off their World Series roster, as well as the family medical emergency list, so as not to pressure him into feeling he needed to return.

“This is so much bigger than baseball,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said at the time. “And for us, it was doing whatever small part we could to just 100% be supportive.”

The Dodgers’ bullpen honored Vesia in Game 3 of the World Series, with each reliever writing his No. 51 on the sides of their caps for the rest of the series. The Toronto Blue Jays’ relievers did the same in Games 6 and 7, a gesture several Dodgers publicly recognized and deeply appreciated.

“I think it really speaks to the brotherhood of athletes, major league baseball players,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts ahead of Game 7. “Baseball is what we do, but it’s not who we are. And for these guys to recognize Alex and what he and Kayla have gone through — ‘heartbreaking’ is not even a good enough descriptor.”

“For those guys to do that, it’s incredible,” outfielder Kiké Hernández added. “They’re trying to win a World Series, but they understand that this is — life is bigger than baseball, and baseball’s just a game. For them to do that with the stakes where we’re at, hats off to them, and I want them to know that we appreciate ‘em.”

The Vesias also thanked the Dodgers, Blue Jays and baseball fans for their support.

“Our baseball family showed up for us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them,” they wrote. “We have seen ALL your messages, comments and posts. It’s brought us so much comfort.”

Vesia was a key part of the Dodgers’ bullpen in both the regular season (when he had a 3.02 ERA in a career-high 68 appearances) and the first three rounds of the playoffs (when he allowed just two runs in seven outings).

On Thursday, the Dodgers picked up Vesia’s $3.65-million option for next season, avoiding arbitration before what will be his final year before reaching free agency.

I was in a Premier League ‘Bomb Squad’ like Sterling but it wasn’t horrible – I even used the chance to do some coaching

ISAAC HAYDEN feels sympathy for Chelsea ‘bomb squad’ members Raheem Sterling and Axel Disasi.

The ex-Newcastle midfielder, now at QPR, spent the first five months of last season in limbo after failing to secure a summer move.

Sterling shared a photo of himself training alone late in the evening, while boss Enzo Maresca admitted he has not even spoken to the winger this season.

Hayden, 30, was not in Eddie Howe’s plans but his circumstances were slightly different.

He told SunSport: “I have sympathy because footballers want to play — but everyone’s got different reasons as to why they find themselves in a so-called ‘bomb squad’.

“It happened to me because I couldn’t find a solution during that summer window which fitted in with what Newcastle also wanted.

“But I had constant contact with Eddie and was given nothing but support.”

Hayden made 187 appearances for Newcastle, won the Championship title in 2017 and had five seasons playing in the Premier League.

But a knee injury in December 2021 sidelined him for 5½ months and Howe later told him he was surplus to requirements.

Hayden said: “By the time I’d come back, they had signed Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton was playing as a No 8 — so there was no space.

“And the team had been transformed from one fighting relegation to having top-six form.

“Eddie was honest and said he had five players in front of me. You think to yourself, ‘I know where I stand’. I’d rather  that than the manager not talking to me.

“You hear people talk about bomb squads where they isolate you, and that’s horrible — but Eddie and Newcastle didn’t do that.

“We had the conversation as to why he couldn’t name me in the 25-man squad.

“And it’s not as simple as, ‘Why not let him train with the first team?’. If you’re doing an 11 v 11 game and everyone’s fit, you’re not going to be able to train with the group because there are too many players.

So Eddie’s solution for me to train with the Under-23s was better. It meant I could train normally every day — and not by myself.”

Hayden actually embraced that period and even did some coaching.

He said: “The bottom line is you’re getting paid good money by the club as a professional footballer. So you give 100 per cent to them in whatever role you’re in.”

After spending the second half of last season on loan with Portsmouth, Hayden joined QPR permanently in the summer.

And now he is hoping to play for Jamaica at next summer’s World Cup.

He said: “One of the huge blessings to come out of that period was I was able to go to Jamaica for a few days to sort my  passport out so I could play for them.

“Had I been playing first-team football every week I’d have not been able to.

“Now I have a chance of making the World Cup. It goes to show you can make everything work out in the end.”

Chelsea desperately trying to find new home for Raheem Sterling as host of clubs linked with former England star

CHELSEA are desperately trying to find Raheem Sterling a new home on transfer deadline day.

The winger has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea and spent last season out on loan at Arsenal.

Sterling, 30, could be set to move again within the Prem on deadline day.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Fulham see the former Manchester City and Liverpool star as an option.

He has reported that the Cottagers have revived talks for Sterling as one of three attackers they are interested in.

Fulham’s top target is Shakhtar Donetsk star Kevin.

They are believed to have agreed a fee of £34.6million for the Brazilian wonderkid.

However, Romano has suggested that there is no agreement with the player as of yet.

AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze is also a potential option.

Sterling had been left in limbo by Chelsea as he has one more year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have left it very late in the window to try and find a solution for the former England international.

He made the move to the Gunners on deadline day last summer but Chelsea still had to pay a large chunk of his wages.

Napoli are among the other clubs to have been linked with a move for Sterling.

Any club that does agree a deal for Sterling will be hoping to land a similar package to Arsenal last term.

Sterling is yet to play this season with Blues boss Enzo Maresca favouring the likes of Jamie Gittens, Pedro Neto and Estevao.

Fulham manager Marco Silva will be desperate to get bodies over the line today as he has not been happy with the club’s lack of activity.

The West London side has only added back-up French goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte to their squad this summer.

Silva will be hoping to welcome at least Kevin and Chukwueze as Fulham close in on those deals.

Just last week, he insisted that Fulham needs to add to the squad.

He said: “We have to (sign players). This is the situation.

“I’m answering this way to you, and it’s not to put any more type of pressure at all.

“It’s because we don’t have other solutions.”

Elsewhere, Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Chelsea have also resumed Nicolas Jackson’s deal to join Bayern Munich.

Chelsea scramble to sell ten-man ‘bomb squad’ before transfer deadline with Blues ready to agree Raheem Sterling loan

CHELSEA are willing to send out Raheem Sterling on loan again – as they try to shift up to TEN players before the transfer window closes.

Both the Blues and Sterling would prefer to find a permanent deal.

But they equally want to avoid the kind of last-minute scramble that sent the England international to Arsenal last season.

Chelsea are seeking to offload Sterling, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, David Datro Fofana and Ben Chilwell in the next fortnight.

Young winger Tyrique George could also be on the way out, while defender Aaron Anselmino is surplus to the current requirements of boss Enzo Maresca.

Sterling has two years left on a contract worth more than £300,000 per week.

Chelsea ended up paying a significant proportion of those wages last season as part of an 11th-hour deal with the Gunners on transfer deadline day.

Sterling would prefer to stay in England and preferably in the London area. Son Thiago, eight, signing for Arsenal’s academy earlier this summer.

Fulham have shown interest but it is yet to turn into a concrete offer, and oversea clubs including Napoli have also been linked to the winger..

Chelsea still want to bring more new players IN to the club, despite already spending more than £240m this summer.

They have recouped £200m in sales by moving on players like Noni Madueke, who joined Arsenal for £52m.

But the Blues will need to sell in order to feel comfortable about making deals for Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons.

So far Chelsea have struggled to find clubs willing to match their valuations for Jackson, Nkunku, Veiga, Chuwuemeka and Disasi.

And although the Blues would prefer to sell them all if possible, they are now open to loan deals with obligations or options to buy for at least some of them.

Napoli could now join Newcastle, Aston Villa, Juventus and AC Milan among the potential suitors for Jackson, after former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku suffered an injury.

But the Blues are struggling to create a competitive market for their other unwanted stars.

Pound’s strength means Brits could be in for summer holiday spending boost

The strength of the pound against most other currencies has boosted Brits’ spending power when they head abroad this summer, research had found, in some cases by a lot

Millions of Brits planning foreign holidays this summer will be quids in thanks to the pound’s strength, a recent report has found.

Sterling’s gain against a host of currencies has boosted families’ spending power – in some cases by a lot. For instance, the pound’s 30% rise against the lira in the past year means holidaymakers jetting to Turkey will have a bumper £116 more to spend for every £500. That is equivalent to a couple of three course meals for two, with wine, in the Turkish resort of Marmaris, plus four beers. Those considering a long-haul break to Mexico will have almost £57 per £500 extra thanks to a near 13% increase against the peso, according to the Post Office Travel Money’s Holiday Spending Report.

It reveals that the UK pound is stronger than a year ago against 25 of the 30 currencies and has gained ground against 80% of them since March. Others in the top 10 list of spending power gainers include Egypt, Australia, and New Zealand.

Brits thinking of a trip to the States will also get more bang for their buck thanks to sterling’s 6.6% rise against the US dollar, meaning they would have almost £31 per £500 more to spend than this time last year. Despite that, many people are seemingly having second thoughts about going on holiday to the USA. The main concern is that US President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs will mean higher prices – cited by 78% of those polled – rather than his politics in general.

Those heading to Europe will also be better off, though not by so much. Sterling is just 0.9% up against the euro year-on-year, meaning Brits have £4.50 per £500 more spending power across the pond than last summer.

The Post Office report also found a sharp rise in the number of people planning trips abroad. Two-thirds of those surveyed said they intend to take a foreign holiday this year , with more than half having already booked their trip. That is despite growing concerns voiced by nine-in-ten of them about whether they have enough money to afford the trip. Over three-quarters said exchange rates were a big concern for them.

When it came to people’s views on the best value destinations, Brit-favourite Spain came top, followed by Turkey, Thailand, Portugal, Greece and Italy. When it came to their trip abroad, 82% of holidaymakers said they had set a budget averaging £377, but most admitted overspending.

Nearly eight out of 10 people in a survey say they are put off holidaying in America because of tariff-triggered price rises

Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at the Post Office, which accounts for one-in-four UK foreign exchange transactions, said: “This year’s holiday spending research again demonstrates that holidaymakers don’t always set a realistic budget and overspend by large amounts as a result. It’s great to hear that holidaymakers are already planning to budget more for their holidays this year, to avoid coming unstuck when they arrive at their destination.”

The report also found that many holidaymakers are paying over the odds for transactions abroad. While it advisable to carry some cash overseas, one-in-five in the survey said relied solely on plastic to pay for purchases, and just over a quarter changed less than £100 into foreign currency.

As a consequence, holidaymakers can into difficulties. From the poll, 7% said they had tried to pay a restaurant, shop or bar bill with a credit card, only to find that it was not accepted.

More than one-in-ten also fell foul of a practice known as Dynamic Currency Conversion by agreeing to pay on their card in sterling rather than local currency, incurring unnecessary transaction charges as a result.

Ms Plunkett said: “Paying on a debit or credit card may seem like a convenient way to pay for things while abroad, but our research suggests that this can be a costly practice. Far too many holidaymakers told us that they paid significantly more than they anticipated because of the transaction charges made for using credit and debit cards at an overseas ATM.”
