Before that, they suffered a 2-1 defeat by Brazil on their homecoming return but recorded a 3-0 win over Australia three days later.

The matches gave Wiegman an opportunity to test new players and formations – handing a debut to 30-year-old goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse in the process.

Among those to receive their first senior call-ups to the squad were defenders Anouk Denton, Taylor Hinds and forward Freya Godfrey.

There was also time for England stars Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze and Lauren James to recover from lengthy injuries.

Chelsea defender Millie Bright, who captained England to the World Cup final in 2023, announced her retirement in October having withdrawn from the Euros.

There was a serious blow for Arsenal forward Michelle Agyemang – one of England’s key players in Switzerland – as she was carried off on a stretcher after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the win over Australia.

But it’s been a successful time for the other Lionesses in Arsenal’s squad, including captain Williamson, who lifted the Champions Cup in February.

And Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was named the world’s best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or awards in September, as Wiegman picked up the best coach award.

Hampton also wrapped up the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award in November after being caught up in the fallout of Mary Earps’ autobiography, which was released earlier that month.

Ulster back row Bryn Ward has rejoined the Ireland squad while prop Tadhg Furlong has resumed full training before Saturday’s Six Nations game against Italy (14:10 GMT).

Three-time British and Irish Lions tight-head Furlong missed last week’s defeat by France in Paris with a calf problem.

In a squad bulletin on Monday, the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) said “a decision will be made on his availability ahead of Thursday afternoon’s team announcement”.

Furlong, 33, only made one appearance off the bench in last year’s Six Nations because of injury.

Uncapped Ward was part of Ireland’s pre-tournament training camp in Portugal before linking up with the Ireland XV panel for Friday’s emphatic 52-14 loss to England A at Thomond Park.

The 21-year-old back row, the son of former Ireland flanker Andy, has impressed since breaking into the Ulster team earlier this season.

Ireland, who trained at Clongowes Wood College in Kildare on Monday, reported no fresh injury concerns after Thursday’s demoralising 36-14 loss to France.

Italy, meanwhile, have recalled Toulouse wing Ange Capuozzo to their squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Dublin.

The 26-year-old, who has scored 16 tries in 31 Azzurri caps, has not played since December because of a finger injury.

However, Italy boss Gonzalo Quesada will be without Juan Ignacio Brex because of “family reasons”.

The Argentine-born Toulon centre set up Louis Lynagh’s try in Saturday’s win over Scotland in Rome.

Quesada is also without scrum-half Martin Page-Relo, fly-half Tommaso Allan, back rowers Sebastian Negri and Ross Vintcent, hooker Gianmarco Lucchesi, prop Marco Riccioni and wing Edoardo Todaro.

Uncapped Eoin Nelson, Sean Fitzpatrick and America-born Eli Brooks have also been named in Bree’s squad.

South Carolina-born point guard Brooks plays for Spanish side Basquet Manresa and qualifies for Ireland through his Belfast-born grandfather.

Centre Nelson was called up to the previous squad for the North Macedonia game but did not feature, while guard Fitzpatrick did not make it on to the court against Norway last summer after making an extended 20-man squad.

There is also a return for James Gormley, who missed the Luxembourg and North Macedonia games, but Taiwo Badmus, Sean Jenkins and Max Amadasun are out injured while John Carroll is unavailable due to personal commitments.

“Eoin and James, at 6ft 8ins and 7ft, both bring size to the equation and have been playing well with their respective clubs, as has Sean Fitzpatrick,” added Bree.

“It’s great to be able to bring in someone of the calibre of Eli Brooks too, who has been playing EuroCup basketball with his club Basquet Manresa and has experience playing in Germany and Italy too.”

The three group winners and the best-ranked second-placed team from three first round groups will advance to the second round of pre-qualifiers, where they will be joined by eight teams from the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers first round.

Left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis will replace Cummins after he failed to recover in time for the tournament.

Australian fast ‌bowler Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the ICC Twenty20 World ‍Cup after failing to recover from a nagging back injury, with Ben Dwarshuis named as his replacement in the tournament starting next month.

“With ⁠Pat needing more time to recover from his back injury, Ben is a ready replacement who offers a left-arm pace option as well as dynamic fielding and late-order hitting,” selector Tony Dodemaide said on Saturday.

“We believe his ability to swing the ball at good pace, along with clever variations, will be well-suited to the conditions we expect and ​overall structure of the squad.”

Cummins played just one of the five Ashes Tests against England, but Australia kept ⁠him in the provisional World Cup squad, hoping for his availability in the ​Super Eight stage of the tournament to be played in ‍India and Sri Lanka.

Matt Renshaw also replaced fellow batter Matthew Short but veteran Steve Smith could not break into the World Cup squad despite his strong form in the Big ‍Bash League.

The Mitchell Marsh-led side are ‌currently playing a three-match T20 series in Pakistan as part of their preparation for the World Cup.

“With the top order settled and spin-heavy conditions expected in the pool stages in Sri ‌Lanka, we also feel Matt provides extra middle-order support, with Tim David completing his return-to-play programme in the ‌early phase of the tournament,” Dodemaide said of ⁠Renshaw’s selection.

“As a left-hander, he also offers a point of difference to the middle-order batting.”

Renshaw scored 15 in his T20 debut for Australia in Thursday’s defeat in Lahore.

The former champions begin their ‌World Cup campaign against Ireland in a February 11 match in Colombo.
