Show judge Amanda — in a lop-sided strapless top — nearly exposed herself by lifting her left arm to wave at the crowd as she strutted on stage at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Saturday.
After adjusting her clothes to preserve her modesty she sat down.
Then, gesturing to her boob, she admitted: “This keeps slipping out every time I raise my arms.”
Yesterday The Sun revealed a small production team were quickly put on “nipple watch” to ensure there were no surprise appearances during filming of the ITV talent contest.
Our observer reported: “She waved with her left hand, where her top had more coverage than on the right-hand side, and kept her other hand firmly in her pocket most of the time.
“Amanda didn’t want any wardrobe malfunctions again. She was probably already feeling the chill in blustery Blackpool.”
Also dressed for sunnier climes was head judge Simon Cowell in shades, and fellow panellist Alesha Dixon wearing sunglasses and a crop-top.
Only hosts Ant and Dec and new judge KSI — taking over from Bruno Tonioli — looked ready for Lancashire weather.
Auditions for the 19th series of BGT, due to air next year, continue in the seaside town until the end of this week.

BRITAIN’S Got Talent star, Dave Betton, who was praised by Simon Cowell after performing with his son has died, aged 82.
Betton had appeared on the show alongside his son Dean in 2020, reaching its latter stages after impressing the judges.

The father-son duo had left them stunned throughout and at one point received a standing ovation for rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life”.
Simon Cowell said at the time: “There are certain days I think what I need is a mug of hot chocolate – and you were a mug of hot chocolate!
“You made me feel good, I needed that.”
Betton, from Chesterfield, worked as a club singer after moving to Blackpool in 1981 with his wife after she bought the Dorchester Hotel.
Throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s he performed at clubs up and down the coast on the local circuit.
He went on to perform on tour in Australia and South Africa and even had a stint in Las Vegas, achieving a personal ambition of his.
Following the death of his wife, he had retired 15 years ago.
His son, Dean, had also carved out a career as a Robbie Williams tribute act and it was his idea that they should go on Britain’s Got Talent where they were billed as Dave and Dean.
“I always looked up to my Dad and he inspired me to take up singing, quite late in the game,” Dean said.
“He was definitely a local legend in his time – he would pack out clubs.”
Dave sadly passed away last month from sepsis after a short illness and was surrounded by his family.
His funeral will take place on Monday, October 27 at Carleton Crematorium.
He leaves two sons, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and a step great granddaughter.

Harper has been increasingly popping up on her mum’s social media feedCredit: Instagram
Earlier this month the HIKU BY Harper, the proposed name for the skincare and beauty brand, was filed under two trademark applications by the business Victoria incorporated for Harper, H7B Limited, matching the teenager’s full name, Harper Seven Beckham.
A source said: “Harper loves fashion and make-up and has already started doing make-up tutorials.
“The plan is to create a brand aimed at the younger market, taking inspiration for pop culture and Korean beauty.
Harper has been increasingly popping up on mum Victoria’s Instagram feed and even set up her own account earlier this year.
Victoria said: “Harper is going to be one of two things. She’s either going to be a beauty mogul or she’s going to be a stand-up. She is hilarious.”
Last year Harper, who has been stepping out in custom-made dresses by her mother’s VB label, spoke publicly for the first time to present Victoria with a prestigious award for entrepreneurship, on behalf of Harper’s Bazaar magazine at its annual Women of the Year event.
She said: “I’m so nervous. Especially as tonight’s a school night. Hopefully this isn’t going to get me in trouble.
“My amazing mummy has built an incredible business from the ground up and has shown me the value of working hard.
“But above all, she’s taught me to always be kind and, even though she has a million things to do, she rarely misses school.”

So far ITV2 viewers have said goodbye to Emily Hewertson, who was in the house for a few hours, and Gani Khan, who became the second housemate to be evicted last Friday.
And earlier this week, ITV bosses made the decision to axe George following “inappropriate behaviour and language”.
But now Big Brother has decided to bring back not one but TWO former housemates to shake things up.
After Cameron’s eviction, Will told viewers: “Now it’s finally time to reveal next week’s game-changing twist.”
AJ said: “Next Friday, two more late arrivals will go into the Big Brother house and they’re not just any late arrivals.”
Will explained: “Two former housemates who may have gone too soon will be going back through those doors.
“So make sure you watch tonight’s Big Brother Late and Live because we’re going to have all the info.”
Kicking things off on the after show, Will said: “What a night we’ve had so far. Three housemates face eviction and two former housemates are going back in next week.”
Big Brother fans raced to Twitter with their predictions.
One wrote: “EMILY AND GANI RETURN?!!!”

A second posted: “My theory on the bigggg twist is 4 out 4 in like in Timebomb series of Big Brother where one of Emily or Gani return.”
The 25-year-old Bolton lad Cameron B entered the House on Day Two, alongside three other newcomers.
Axed star George Gilbert, 23, had also been on the chopping block before his shock exit.
Sources told The Sun that George left his co-stars horrified after making offensive comments which could be interpreted as antisemitic and was immediately called to the Diary Room and ejected from the house.
“Everyone was absolutely disgusted,” an insider said.
“Nobody could believe what he said – he was clearly out to shock people.”
Since leaving the house, George has said: “As a flag bearer of freedom of speech I never hesitate to discuss and question any topic regardless of how contentious it may be.
“Sadly, the boundaries of what is deemed offensive are subjective and I evidently went too far this time by crossing their line one too many times.”
He added: “It is a shame that specific debate could not be had and that it has had to end like this.

Jonathan said he might have to have a word with Alan after the winkCredit: BBC
Comedian Alan alongside TV presenter Jonathan Ross and singer and Brit nominee Cat Burns were chosen to be the devilish three to cause mayhem in the game.
This sentiment was highlighted even more during Thursday evening’s episode, as Alan winked at Jonathan after committing the first murder.
After wondering around in a mild panic, he eventually headed into the kitchen with his friend Paloma Faith and actress Ruth Codd.

He committed the deadly act before heading down to the fire outside with other celebrities and winking at Jonathan to let him know he had fulfilled the brief.
He also said in another very telling move: “It’s done,” while subtly trying to let Jonathan know that he’d committed the murder.
Fans took to X to share their shock at Alan’s wink and ‘it’s done’ statement.
One person penned: “Oh wow, Alan has to be the worst traitor to have ever existed.”
Another questioned: “Did he really just wink at Jonathan?” while a third said: “Absolutely howling. As if Alan just winked at Jonathan in front of everyone.”
Celebrity Traitors fans left shocked by Alan Carr’s first victim as he commits murder in plain sight
A fourth person penned: “Oh Alan, talk about making it obvious.”
And someone else quipped: “I’m in disbelief at Alan as a traitor so far. He’s making Linda look like James Bond.”
Later in the turret, Jonathan and Cat asked him who he had chosen, and Alan revealed he had been forced to pick his friend Paloma.
The Traitors viewers were shocked that Alan had betrayed his pal, with one writing on X: “Noooooo Alan! Not Paloma!”
Another added: “Paloma girl. You was GOT.”
A third commented: “I cannot believe Paloma Faith is going to be dead by the end of the day…”
After committing the murder, all the celebrities turned up to breakfast, before Claudia arrived and told them to get ready for a funeral.
The celebrities than joined the procession before arriving at three coffins.
They were then given clues to work out which three celebrities the Traitors had put in the coffins.
It ended up being Lucy Beaumont, Paloma and Niko Omilana.
Claudia then walked the line and dramatically closed the lid on Paloma, leaving the remaining celebrities absolutely gobsmacked.

Reiss admitted he’s looking for a woman with a specific walkCredit: e4
But viewers were left confused when Reiss admitted he’s looking for a woman with a specific walk.
In his VT, Reiss said: “When people first meet me, they think I’m flash because of the looks. I consider myself to be a pretty boy.”
He continued: “If I was to go for a certain woman, I initially look at her teeth, her smile.
“I get a bit silly and I start looking into their walk, making sure they have a nice walk as well.
“A good walk for a woman is when they go one by one and not side by side.”
He then demonstrated using his fingers the type of walk he wants his wife to have.
But E4 viewers were left bemused by the requirement.
One wrote: “What did Reiss mean about a woman’s walk? The only way to do it is one foot in front of the other. It’s just a shuffle otherwise.”
A second posted: “WTF does Reiss mean about ‘I don’t like side by side walk’. He seems like a weirdo but was hoping he would be ‘nicer Steven’.”
A third said: “Hope Reiss demonstrates the crab walk he despises. I want to make sure I walk correctly.”

This person commented: “What the f*** is Reiss on about? How many women walk like crabs!?”
Someone else said: “Where the f*** did they get him from? At least I now know how to walk,” while this viewer posted: “Leisha better crab walk down that isle.”
“A good walk for a woman is legs going straight of each other one at the time and not side to side. Either the women where he comes from are constantly p***** or have s**t themselves,” another shared.
This person said: “She best walk down the aisle in an assertive…one foot in front of the other yet straight manner.”
While this viewer wrote: “Reiss seems to think he’s gods gift to women as long as they don’t walk like a crab…ok then.”
Another added: “How does he think women walk?”
Reiss, who owns his own painting and decorating company, said he loves to get his hands dirty and isn’t shy when it comes to grafting.
Reiss said: “I’m very close to my family, my nanny Linda is like an angel, she’s my rock. I love playing chess with her.
“My nan and granddad have had a romantic relationship for years, I’m hoping that’s what mine will be like.”
The Essex lad said he’s a romantic at heart and has learnt from the best – so is now ready to settle down.
Reiss, who previously dated Towie star Dani Imbert, also spoke about his most recent split.
He said: “I miss being in a relationship. You can’t really beat it.
“I don’t know if I’ve found the full package.
“I do choose the wrong girls. My last relationship unfortunately came to an end because the bickering became too much.
“I’ve been heartbroken in past relationships. When a girl leaves you, I feel abandoned and I just feel lost.
“Marrying a strange will work because I’ll do anything to find the perfect one.”
Yesterday, E4 viewers saw the pair meet for the first time at the altar.
Reiss could be seen turning around to greet Leisha, who was already laughing away.
The overexcited bride appeared to be too much for Reiss within the first few seconds.
In one scene, she can be seen bending her knees before screaming at the ground in excitment.
Reiss was seen looking on uncomfortably.
Speaking to the camera, Reiss voiced his concern as he said: “She’s 100 miles an hour.
“Let’s hope it doesn’t turn to 1000 miles an hour.”
Still clearly overexcited for her wedding day, Leisha said to the camera: “Buckle up because he’s in for a good ride.”
Ahead of the experiment, Reiss spoke out about his hopes for the show and the kind of bride he was hoping to marry.
His ideal bride is “someone blonde, petite with an element of glamour”

The show premiered on October 5, 2025Credit: PA
ITV’s Frauds is about two former partners-in-crime who reunite for one last audacious heist after one of them is released from prison on compassionate grounds.
The synopsis for the series reads: “Bert and Sam embark on the most audacious of art thefts, gathering a talented team of outcasts to help them plan this audacious crime.
“Whilst the team must overcome numerous challenges before they can pull off the heist, it’s the power struggle between Bert and Sam that threatens to derail their plans and destroy them both.
“Set against the epic rolling hills of southern Spain and the dark criminal underbelly that casts a shadow over the glistening coast, Frauds is a complex and addictive story of friendship, deception and survival.”
It blends dark comedy with the cinematic heist genre, set against the scenic backdrop of southern Spain — but is it a true story?
When is Frauds on?
Frauds premiered at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday, October 5, 2025.
The series includes six episodes airing on consecutive Sunday and Monday nights over three weeks.
All episodes are also available on ITVX for streaming.
Is Frauds based on a true story?
Frauds is a work of fiction created by Suranne Jones and co-writer Anne-Marie O’Connor.
The plot revolves around Bert, who has been in a Spanish prison for ten years and is released due to a terminal cancer diagnosis.
One Night- Official Trailer, Paramount+ UK & Ireland
Upon release, she reconnects with her former partner Sam to plan a multi-million-pound art heist.
While the series captures the feel of real criminal undertakings, it is not an adaptation of a true crime or real-life story.
What is the Frauds cast?
Frauds tells the story of Bert and Sam, whose toxic friendship will be pushed to the ultimate test.
Bert tries to lure her pal out of criminal retirement to pull off a multi-million-pound art heist.
Suranne Jones stars as Bert — the career criminal recently released from prison.

TV chef Jamie Oliver raked in £28.5million last year as he continued to bounce back from his restaurant chain collapse.
Jamie Oliver Holdings’ bumper 2024 income came from TV shows, book sales and restaurants.
It also covered his cookery school and fees for promoting Tesco.
Jamie’s Italian chain collapsed in 2018, with debts of £83million.
But he now has international brands and a restaurant in Covent Garden, central London.
Revenues were up from £27.1million in 2023, Companies House files show.

But profits took a slight dip to £4.6million last year, from £5.2million.
The chef and his wife Jools, both 50, received dividends of £3million.
A report said: “The principal drivers of this decrease in profitability were reduced revenue from the effects of the cyclical nature of long term partnerships contracts, partially offset by savings in central staff costs (excluding Owned and Operated sites)
“We have delivered new Jamie Oliver titles in both book and TV formats during the year and there has been continued strong performance from back catalogue book titles and our international television content distributor.
“The Board recognises that the Jamie Oliver brand is a key asset of the Group and is confident that the night controls are in place to protect its value.”

After landing near the bottom of the leaderboard, Thomas ended up facing off against former England rugby star Chris Robshaw and his partner Nadiya Bychkova, in the dance-off.
All four judges opted to save Chris and kick Thomas out of the competition.
Speaking about his time on the show, Skinner said: “I’ve loved it. I’ve never danced before and my stay was short, but Amy’s amazing.
“It’s been great fun and I’ve enjoyed it. I can’t really dance that well but I’ve had fun! Thank you, Amy – sorry that we haven’t done too good, ’cause you’re a different class.”
The news leaked late on Saturday night after Sunday’s episode was recorded.
Viewers were delighted with the result with one writing: “The strictly spoiler results have absolutely made my evening. I can sleep well now. #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing”
A second said: “If the spoiler I just saw is true I cheered so loud thank you British public thank you Strictly.”
Another added: “Absolutely the right result!! Good job for once public!!”
The judges’ decision came after the couples’ scores from week one and two were added to the public vote.
It came after Skinner, who has made his name as a social media star, ended Saturday’s show with a joint score of 29, having scored just 13 for his performance.
Strictly’s Thomas Skinner hits back after he’s ridiculed over Bonkers performance to Dizzee Rascal hit
Dowden added of her time with Skinner: “I’ve got to know the real Tom and he is adorable. He’s looked after me.
“We’ve laughed so much. We’ve worked so hard and a glitterball would have been amazing, but what I’ve learnt in the last few years is happiness, health and being alive is more important than anything. I’ve made a new friend for life and I wouldn’t change a thing.
“There is a ballroom boy in there, so I’m a bit gutted he didn’t get to do the ballroom, but the last three years, as you know, have been quite difficult for me.
“I lost all confidence as a dancer – but walking into the room with you with a massive smile and a laugh, you brought me back and, honestly, thank you.”

It comes after Skinner hit the headlines after he admitted to cheating on his wife just weeks after their wedding in an interview with The Sun, having previously apologised for picking up a journalist’s phone and walking out of a press event for Strictly midway through.
The remaining 14 couples will take to the dancefloor next week for movie week when Strictly Come Dancing returns at 6.05pm on Saturday October 11, on BBC One and iPlayer.
IT is often a shock when celebrities suddenly find themselves sprayed orange and squeezed into a skimpy outfit for Strictly.
But for proud Geordie Vicky Pattison it is not a problem, because that is how she has spent most Saturday nights since she was as a teenager.

For the TV star, getting dolled up to the nines every weekend is not being Strictlyfied, it is just being a lass from Newcastle.
Vicky, 37, said: “Everybody knows I’m super nervous about this entire process, I’m just a gobby girl from the north east doing her best.
“The dancing, the being out my comfort zone, learning something new, being judged by the public is also terrifying.
“But the one element that made me feel really excited and I had no reservations about at all was definitely being Strictlyfied.
“I’m sorry but the tan, the hair, the glam! I’ve been preparing for this for like 25 years.
“Like, I didn’t even have to change my fake tan routine at all — this girl was ready.”
Although Vicky, who is partnered on this series with pro Kai Widdrington, admits she likes a party her blind spot is actually the dancing.
She said: “I’ve joked that this is the first time I’ve danced sober but it’s probably not that far from the truth.
“You normally see me at people’s parties at the bar or chewing someone’s ear off in the kitchen. Definitely the last place you’d find me is on the dance floor.
“Everyone is gonna think I’m a novice — and they’d be right. But I am ready for a challenge and desperate to prove myself and some people wrong along the way.”
Vicky Pattison breaks down in tears as she reveals secret battle ahead of Strictly Come Dancing debut
‘Reality TV scum’
Vicky admits people constantly underestimate her and in the 14 years since she shot to fame on MTV series Geordie Shore, has always been a bit of an underdog.
Cynics would do well to remember she won that contest after a substantial public vote.
She said: “Winning the jungle was the best moment of my life, maybe tied with the day that I got married to Ercan.
“Everybody just wanted us out initially. Obviously I was in there and in me bubble and I’m actually really grateful for that, you know.
“But I learned afterwards everyone was like: ‘Get her out. We don’t want her in here. Reality TV scum blah, blah, blah.’

I’ve joked that this is the first time I’ve danced sober but it’s probably not that far from the truth. You normally see me at people’s parties at the bar . . . not on the dancefloor
“I don’t know what they thought I was gonna do like, go in there and down a Jaegerbomb and punch a kangaroo or something?
“I just wanted a chance to prove myself, to show people that I could be something different than what they’ve seen before.
“I just want to put my best SELF forward and within about 24 hours I was the favourite to win. I’m so proud of me achievement there.
“This is a very different ball game. I’m totally aware of that. But, like I say, I have always been the underdog and if people wanna get behind us, that is really nice.”
Although the public have yet to be fully won over by her dance on last week’s first live show, she finished in fifth place on the scoreboard — which is pretty impressive given she is one of 15 celebrities competing.
Meanwhile bookies Ladbrokes have her as favourite to win at 5/1, ahead of West End star Amber Davies and ex-footballer Karen Carney whose sensational jive saw her top the scoreboard last week.
Vicky said: “I can’t believe anyone would have us down as favourite in the lasses to win. I mean, have you seen the women in this competition? They’re all incredible.
“Amber’s amazing, did you see Kaz Carney’s jive on Saturday night? I mean, come on, that’s my winner right there!
“Bal is beautiful inside and out and just has so much rhythm. Alex is so theatrical and emotional when she dances it’s so beautiful.
“Ellie’s energy is infectious, just don’t even get us started on La Voix, you can’t look anywhere else when she’s on the stage.
“Maybe there’s a mistake there with those odds.”
Despite being up against the likes of Amber, who has appeared in 9 to 5 The Musical and stage show Back To The Future, plus Lewis Cope who was in the stage version of Billy Elliot, she feels no resentment.
Instead she adopts a more philosophical approach to the issue which pops up each series.
I don’t know what people thought I was gonna do in the jungle . . . like go in and down a Jaegerbomb and punch a kangaroo?
Vicky said: “Every year Strictly has people of different abilities, doesn’t it? Some people who have never danced before, totally inexperienced, and some people maybe did ballet before as kids, some people a bit more.
“I don’t think it’s a big problem. It’s part and parcel and there’s loads of different styles of dance isn’t there?
“Just because someone’s experienced in one, doesn’t mean they’re experienced in another.
“Also, I do think it’s nice for the viewers at home that they get to watch some really good dancers early doors, like you know when maybe the rest of us are just learning. There is some still really brilliant performances to watch and everyone goes on a journey.”

Vicky sees her journey continuing after she has completed Strictly, whether that is after this weekend’s first eviction, or after potentially making her way to the final.
But she admits wherever her career goes, it won’t be in dance. She said: “I honestly haven’t thought past getting through the first week.
“Like if I managed to stay in on Saturday I’ll be shocked and over the moon.
“I certainly haven’t got any Grand Designs on being a West End star or, you know, pivoting into the world of performing. There’s far more deserving and better people than me. I’m a big fan of Strictly, I’ve watched it since I was a kid.
“I watched it with me grandma — it was me grandma’s favourite. I think that’s why I’m doing it, great big tick off the bucket list.
“But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping it would take us to different opportunities.
“The BBC is British institution, it’s a great channel. I would love to make more TV with them so, yeah, maybe I am hoping it will lead to more things but probably not in the dance space to be totally honest.”
Vicky and Kai will be dancing a foxtrot to the track Rein Me In tonight, which has special meaning as its by Sam Fender who she describes as “a Geordie legend.”
She added: “I feel like I’ve got the weight of the world on my shoulders trying to do, like, all the Northeast proud, Ercan proud, Kai proud, myself and my family proud.
“I’m absolutely terrified. Everyone keeps saying like, ‘Oh do you feel a bit better now you’ve got the first show and the first live dance done?’ I’m like, no I’m not.
“I’m still nervous. I can actually go home you know. It’s just like we’re dancing for fun. It’s not even a pre-record, we’re live and I’m just not ready.
“I’m not ready to say goodbye to people. I’m not ready for this journey to be over so I actually feel sick to my stomach about it.
“By nature, I’m not a very confident person, despite appearances.”
Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One today at 6.20pm.
DAME PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE created a monster, and we loved her for it.
The actress, who has died aged 96, turned Hyacinth Bucket – pronounced “Bouquet” – into one of the most memorable TV characters of all time.

Decades on from Nineties sitcom Keeping Up Appearances the pearl-wearing snob, with her candlelight suppers and white slimline telephone, is still as embedded in the national psyche as a character from Charles Dickens.
In Patricia’s own words: “She was grotesque.”
But the actress, like viewers, could not help but admire her: “She was always getting it wrong and slipping on the banana skin, and then coming back and flying the flag.”
By the time the sitcom first hit screens, Patricia had been acting for nearly 40 years, in roles from Coronation Street to Broadway musicals, with co-stars from Sidney Poitier to Jerry Lewis.
She was also a favourite of writer Alan Bennett, who wrote his first great TV monologue especially for her in 1982.
Its success led to the landmark series Talking Heads, in which she also starred.
Alan said in 1998: “She has an enormous amount of zest and brio and she puts a lot of air into the language, so it lifts dialogue which might otherwise seem quite banal.”
After leaving Keeping Up Appearances, Patricia had a second smash-hit with Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, and in 1996 was voted the nation’s favourite actress of all time.
But Patricia managed to keep her private life out of the spotlight.
She never married or had children, and for years refused to discuss her relationships except to say: “I do know what it is to have loved and suffered.”
Only Fools & Horses legend Patrick Murray had died aged 68
Eventually, she revealed she had had three great love affairs, including one with a married man, which tormented her as a devout Christian.
She also admitted: “I didn’t make a decision not to be married and not to be a mother -– life just turned out like that because my involvement with acting was so total.
“Now I think it’s a pity I didn’t have children. But I’m not sure you can have a career and a family and do both satisfactorily. I always knew, deep down, that everything has a cost.”
But whenever she was asked how to become a success, she had the same answer: “I say, I can give you a tip. It’s called risk. And if you’re prepared to risk everything, then you can do anything.”

Katherine Patricia Routledge was born on February 17, 1929, in Birkenhead, Wirral, and grew up in a house behind father Isaac’s “high-class gentlemen’s outfitters” shop.
The family was theatre-mad and Patricia acted in school plays but never saw it as her future: “I always intended to be a go-ahead headmistress in a red sports car who had romances all over Europe in the holidays.”
With that in mind, she studied English at the University of Liverpool but spent so much time in the student drama club that older brother Graham urged her to audition for the Liverpool Playhouse.
She said: “He was the one who said, ‘That’s what you ought to do.’” In 1952, aged 23, she made her professional debut with the company as Hippolyta in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Just two years later she was in the West End, showing off her roof-raising contralto singing voice in musical comedy The Duenna.
By early 1961 she was so well known on stage stage that the makers of Coronation Street, which had begun a couple of months earlier, pounced: “They created a character for me – Sylvia Snape. She had a little cafe.”
Their idea was for the no-nonsense proprietor to become one of the cobbles’ stalwarts, but after just three episodes Patricia quit.
She recalled: “I just knew inside that I needed to have other adventures.”
That included belting out satirical songs on That Was The Week It Was, as well as her big-screen debut in 1967’s To Sir with Love.
She played a teacher who offers support to Sidney Poitier’s character, and years later recalled the actor’s generosity: “I just had one scene alone with him, and he gave it to me.”
Patricia had less happy memories of working with Jerry Lewis in 1968’s Don’t Raise the Bridge, Lower the River: “An absolute nightmare. And I’m afraid I didn’t find him funny at all.”
BROADWAY DEBUT
That year Patricia also took Broadway by storm, with the New York Times critic describing her performance in Darling of the Day as “the most spectacular, most scrumptious, most embraceable musical comedy debut since Beatrice Lillie and Gertrude Lawrence came to the country.”
It landed her a Tony Award, presented by Groucho Marx.
Back at home, Alan Bennett had been a long-time fan and so when he wrote his first ground-breaking TV monologue, he wrote it for her.
Initially, Patricia turned him down: the piece was 47 minutes of just one character speaking directly to the camera.
Patricia recalled: “I said it wouldn’t work – people would switch off in their thousands.”
But Alan told her: “If you don’t do it, nobody will. I’ve written it for you.”
A Woman of No Importance screened on BBC2 in November 1982, with Patricia as Miss Schofield, who bubbled away about office gossip and the goings on at a hospital where, it slowly dawned on viewers, she was dying.
It was a sensation, and won Patricia a British Press Guild award for best actress. She later said of the writer: “He turns cliche into poetry. “He sees a world in a grain of sand – the sympathy, the humanity.”
Its success led to 1988’s beloved Talking Heads series of six monologues, with Patricia in A Lady of Letters as a lonely busybody who finally finds friendship when she is sent to prison.
She said: “It’s about salvation, about learning to love at a tremendous cost. Oh, it was a joyous thing to do.”

A second series was made in 1998, with Patricia’s monologue this time about a shop assistant who ends up in the thrall of her chiropodist.
In 2004 she admitted she found that part “very kinky”: “I didn’t really enjoy it. I didn’t understand it, deep down.”
Alan said later: “Patricia has a very strong moral streak and very strong views, and I think if a part doesn’t conform with those she’s very dubious about it.”
In between all this, she showed off her comedy brilliance again in Victoria Wood’s series As Seen on TV, playing an overconfident recurring character called Kitty who came out with lines like: “I’m something of a celebrity having walked the entire length of the Pennine Way in slingbacks, to publicise mental health.”
But when sitcom writer Roy Clarke, already famous for Last of the Summer Wine, presented the BBC with scripts for a new series about a suburban social climber, he did not have a lead actress in mind.
He recalled in 2004: “People do assume I must have written Keeping Up Appearances for Patricia Routledge, but I didn’t.”
It was director and producer Harold Snoad who Roy credited for “that perfect bit of casting”.
Harold said: “I wanted the character of Hyacinth to be a sort of stately galleon. I didn’t want somebody lightweight, either in size or vocal terms.”
Patricia said of the character: “She leapt from the page.”
GLOBAL HIT
The first series began on BBC1 in October 1990; soon 13million people a week were tuning in, including superfan the Queen Mum.
Nobody could have delivered lines like her (“I hope that’s a first-class stamp. I object to having second-class stamps thrust through my letterbox”) but she also brought a bursting energy to the role that was unmatchable.
The late Clive Swift, who played Hyacinth’s long-suffering husband Richard, said in 1998: “I can’t think of an another actress who could have brought the physical clowning to the part, which isn’t there particularly in the script.”
It was a global hit, but in 1995 after five series Patricia announced she would not do any more, despite the BBC’s pleas: “There were other adventures to have.”
They included, at the time, a new relationship.
Speaking to The Sun in 1996 she opened up about her private life for the first time, admitting: “A corner of my heart is taken. I’ve got a sneaking feeling that I might have almost everything in the end.
“He’s someone I’ve known for years and years. He’s in theatrical management but we hadn’t seen each other for a long time and then we met again.
“Life is full of the most wonderful surprises.”

Patricia moved to Chichester, West Sussex, in 1999 to be closer to this new love, whose identity was never revealed, and lived there for the rest of her life.
She also told The Sun: “I had my heart broken when I was young. It was a grand passion, but it was complicated because he was married and, of course, I felt very guilty.
“I would gladly have lived with him and I wanted his children. But I couldn’t do it because I thought it would kill my parents.”
Her second great passion came in the late Eighties, when she least expected it: “Out of the blue this enchanting person appeared.
“He was a theatre director – a very funny and delightful man. But he had a heart condition, which I didn’t know about for a while.
“One day I went to rehearsal and was told he’d died in the night. This dear man was no more. I was just so hurt, so sore with the pain of loss.”
‘ILLUMINATING LIFE’
Work was always a refuge. In 1996 she was back on screen in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates as pensioner-turned-crime fighter, who was a down-to-earth, proud working-class opposite of Hyacinth.
Patricia later said of that character: “I loved her.”
It was another hit and the actress never forgave the BBC for axing the programme after four series without telling the cast: “No word ever came – how rude.”
Hetty was her last major TV role; afterwards she focused on theatre. Her final role was in Oscar Wilde’s play An Ideal Husband in 2014 in her adopted hometown of Chichester, where she worshipped at the cathedral each week.
In 2017 she was made a dame for services to the theatre and charity.
On getting the news, she said: “I started to laugh, and then I started to cry. It was extraordinary.”
But Patricia believed her profession was important.
She once said: “It sounds a bit high-faluting, but I think acting is the physicalisation of the imagination.
“If the word becomes flesh, then you are illuminating life for other people.”

The BBC has also announced it will be doing its own programme, which will also mark three decades since 16 pupils and a teacher were killed by a gunman at the schoolCredit: Derek Ironside
But I can reveal the Channel 4 one will have special meaning for its creators.
A TV insider said: “It is being made by production company Candour whose founder, Anna Hall, grew up in the Scottish town that was hit by the tragedy on March 13, 1996.
“So it will be imbued with real poignancy and, of course, it will be handled with extreme sensitivity.”
Chief Creative Officer Anna’s first ever film was about the tragedy — Dunblane: Remembering our Children premiered on ITV on the first anniversary of the shootings in 1997.
The programme was nominated for numerous awards including the RTS Best Single Documentary, an Emmy and a Prix Italia.
Now she and the rest of the Candour team — who also made the recent C4 documentary about the death of Jay Slater — are taking another look at the events of that dark day.
The massacre, which also left 15 people injured, remains the deadliest mass shooting in British history and led to a change in the law prohibiting the possession of most handguns in the UK.
Shooting
Last week the BBC announced it had commissioned a one-off hour-long documentary called Dunblane: The Shooting that Changed Britain.
Made by IWC Media it also looks at what happened in Dunblane, as well as the effect it had on the law.
Channel 4 have yet to confirm the commissioning of its documentary, though it is expected to be filmed this autumn, ready for broadcast in March.

Bill said: “I started out caddying, and golf was the best education I ever received.
“Ireland feels like the right place to put all that to work.
“They’ve got this wonderful word there, ‘craic,’ which means fun, but it means a lot of other things.
“A lot of good things.
“And this show will be about us finding it.”

Gemma future secured
HOLLYOAKS actress Gemma Bissix has signed a new contract to stay on the E4 soap after her explosive comeback as Clare Devine.
Incorrect rumours claimed she had quit but a source told me: “Gemma recently finished filming her first stint back as Clare – but she will be back after a short break.”
DANI Dyer has quit Strictly Come Dancing days before the live shows after injuring her ankle in training.
Dani’s exit dropped just as the cast was putting the final polish on their first live dances.
4
She had taken part in the launch show — filmed ahead of transmission — where her partnership with Nikita was revealed to viewers.
The plan was to hit the floor this weekend, but the fracture means she won’t make it to that first Saturday night.
It’s a tough blow for Dani and for Nikita, who was ready to kick off the series with a crowd-pleasing ballroom number.
Here’s what happened and where things stand with a replacement.
Why has Dani Dyer pulled out of Strictly 2025?
Dani suffered a nasty ankle injury during rehearsals and has been forced to withdraw on medical advice.
She fell during a Friday training session, her foot ballooned over the weekend, and a hospital scan confirmed a fracture, leaving doctors with no choice but to bench her for the series.
The timing is brutal, coming just days before the first live show after she’d already filmed the pre-recorded launch where her pro partner was revealed.
Dani Dyer chokes back tears and says ‘I’m so heartbroken’ as she quits social media after pulling out of Strictly
In an emotional update to fans, Dani explained that continuing would risk exacerbating the injury.
She’d been gearing up for a fast ballroom routine in week one, but admitted taking to the floor with a fracture simply wasn’t possible.
The Love Island winner said she was gutted to walk away so close to the live shows after throwing herself into training.
What did Dani say about quitting?
The TV favourite struggled to hold back tears as she confirmed her exit, calling it “heartbreaking” to bow out before she’d had the chance to perform live.
She also thanked viewers for their support and said she’d be cheering the remaining couples on from the sofa while she focused on healing up.
Dani was particularly disappointed not to get her shot with pro partner Nikita Kuzmin after their pairing was unveiled on the launch show, saying she’d hoped to make her mark on the ballroom this year.
What has Nikita Kuzmin said — and could Dani return?
4
Nikita broke his silence with a heartfelt message to fans and to Dani, praising her effort in the training room and saying he was proud of how hard she’d worked before the injury struck.
He admitted he was “gutted” to lose his celebrity partner so close to week one, and hinted he’d love the chance to dance with Dani in the future when she’s fit again.
In a further update, Nikita suggested the door isn’t closed on Dani appearing down the line in some capacity — whether that’s a studio visit later in the run or even a comeback in a future series once she’s fully recovered.
Is Dani Dyer being replaced?
4
Love Island winner Amber Davies is replacing Dani DyerCredit: Splash
The BBChas confirmed Amber Davies is stepping into the Strictly 2025 line-up after Dani Dyer’s shock withdrawal with a fractured ankle.
Amber won Love Island in 2017 and has since established a successful stage career, starring in West End hits such as 9 to 5: The Musical and Pretty Woman: The Musical.
Thrown straight in at the deep end, Amber will make her Strictly debut in the first live show on Saturday, September 27.
She and Nikita are set to perform a Waltz as they bid to get their scores on the board and settle those first-night nerves.
What this means for week one
The live show will go ahead with a new name slotted into the line-up if producers can finalise the replacement in time.
The incoming celebrity will need to fast-track rehearsals to match the rest of the cast, and their debut dance is likely to be a classic ballroom routine that can be polished quickly in the studio.
Expect a supportive welcome from the judges and some leeway from viewers as the new pairing finds its footing under pressure.
When is Strictly 2025 on?
4
The pre-recorded launch has already aired, revealing the celebrity-pro pairings and giving fans a first look at the glamour.
The live shows start this Saturday night on BBC One, with catch-up available on BBC iPlayer shortly after transmission.
Week one traditionally has no elimination, so viewers will get to see every couple — including the late replacement — take to the floor before the first vote opens the following week.

One viewer wrote: “Where’s Amira and Amani this week?”
A second said: “Missing Amira & Amani this week,” while another said: “I hope Amira & Amani haven’t left the show, they’re the best.”
Another added: “So two of the best people in the cast of Gogglebox are missing.”
But that wasn’t the only concern that Gogglebox fans had tonight.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that five new families had joined this series.
These include friends Jake and Calum from Glasgow, the Gordon family (Andre, Sarah, and Chee) from Surrey, married couple Andrew and Alfie from The Cotswolds, mother and daughter-in-law Sara and Lara from Yorkshire, and sisters Rosie and Susie from Edinburgh.
But some viewers have struggled to “warm” to the newbies and begged for Scottish couple Roisin and Joe to return after they were axed in July.
This viewer wrote: “Gogglebox why did you feel the need to change things up on a highly popular programme? I just don’t get why commissioners and production companies feel the need to change a winning recipe. The new ingredients haven’t enhanced the dish.”
A second posted: “Gogglebox too many posh families now no fun at all.”
A third said: “I’ve still not warmed to any of the new goggleboxers,” while another added: “Gogglebox has gone all posh and less diverse.”
Gogglebox star breaks silence after ‘brutal axe’ from show saying ‘it’s more tragic that being kicked off Love Island’
Roisin and Joe joined Gogglebox in 2022, but announced they were leaving the show in the summer.
Taking to social media, Roisin wrote: “After three and a half years of sitting on the sofa Channel 4 have decided it’s time for Joe and I to stretch our legs and have not asked us back for season 26.
“Therefore we are leaving the Gogglebox family.
“We couldn’t be more grateful to Studio Lambert for the opportunity, the experience has actually been so mad and we will miss watching TV with you all on Friday nights!”
She added: “It’s been an honour to represent Scotland as some of the first Scottish people on the show and prove we don’t actually need subtitles.”
Roisin and boyfriend Joe, who were the first Scots to appear on the much-loved hit for over six years, added: “We have made friends for life and after filming every week for years you have become like our family!
“We could not have asked for better people to work with and we will miss you immensely.
“It for sure has been a once in a lifetime opportunity. Time to watch TV in silence for a bit and put down the popcorn.”
A spokesperson for Channel 4 said: “We thank Joe and Roisin for their contributions to Gogglebox over the years, and wish them all the best for the future.”

She wrote: “Live show tomorrow. That’s me deleting X for now, have fun everyone. Enjoy the show. Don’t be mean. Everyone has feelings and everyone is trying their best. Think before you type. Love.”
Last series Lauren stepped in for Amy Dowden as her replacement after health concerns and danced withJLSsinger JB Gill.
Taking to the stage for the inaugural Icons Week, the pair blew the judges away and received an incredible 39 points.
Joanna said: “There are always going to be predators in an environment like this when you’ve got young, beautiful girls who are desperate to get a job.
“It is so hard to get that job.”
“Most of the time the people who are giving you those jobs are older men and they know that you want the job and there’s a million girls out there trying to get the job.”
She continued: “You don’t ever go, ‘Oh God, I’m going to report this’, because in those days you kind of didn’t, you just got on with it, it was what happened at work.
“It wasn’t every single job I went into, but in lots of different jobs there would be one type of thing.”

According to the Mail, a feud between Coleen’s son Shane Jnr and his former partner, Emma Kivell, has stopped the TV personality from being in touch with her first-born granddaughter.
Coleen was a proud grandmother when Shane became a first-time father to little girl, Amelia Rose, in Januray 2016.
She was even present in the hospital room where she first met the tot.
However, in the years that have followed, a devastating family feud has left relations soured.

Sources have told the Mail that difficulties in the strained relationship between parents Shane Jnr and Emma has caused the lack of contact.
Shane Jnr and Emma are believed to not have been in an official relationship when they conceived their daughter.
A friend told the Mail: “At the time Amelia Rose was born, Coleen was on cloud nine. She was so proud her son and she fell in love with the baby, but Shane and Emma aren’t together, and these situations can become quite hard to navigate.”
They added: “Shane promised to support Emma as she set about her journey into motherhood as a single mum along with the support of her own family, but now there is no contact between the little girl and the Nolans.”
Earlier this year, it is reported that Emma and her inner circle were left “disgusted” when Shane Jnr and his new partner, Kimberley Sallis, sent her a script of their ‘pregnancy announcement’ just ten mintues before their Instagram post to confirm the news.
This left Emma unable to tell their daughter that her father was welcoming another sibling before it was posted online due to her being at school.

It has further been reported that one of Emma’s friends even lodged a complaint to ITV about Coleen but they were unable to take any action due to it being “a private matter”.
The Sun has contacted a representative for Coleen Nolan for comment.
Coleen previously discussed Shane becoming a father and the state of his relationship with Emma with the Mirror, telling the publication: “They got together one night and there you go.
“But they’re not compatible in a relationship. Obviously, you wish they were badly in love and could see a future together.
