Diversity’s Ashley Banjo expresses concern for future dance stars amid rising costs and program cuts

Next generation of dance stars are being priced out the industry, study reveals.

The next generation of dance stars is being priced out of following in the footsteps of Shirley Ballas, Darcey Bussell and Ashley Banjo, according to a study.

Industry data from ONS revealed the number of people working as dancers and choreographers has fallen by 32 per cent since 2019.

While a separate poll of 2,000 adults found 68 per cent of Brits said dance is an important part of British culture, yet six in 10 believe the next generation of dance talent is being priced out of the industry.

And 55 per cent think only those from wealthier backgrounds can realistically pursue a career in dance.

The research was commissioned by The Sky Foundation to mark the launch of the Julia Rausing Sky Arts Bursaries, a new programme providing funding, mentoring and industry support to 20 dance-makers across the UK.

The broadcaster also teamed up with Ashley Banjo MBE, the frontman of the group Diversity, to support the campaign.

Commenting on the poll, the choreographer said: “Dance opened so many doors for me growing up.

“I was lucky my Mum ran a dance school, so I was surrounded by dance from an early age and had access to opportunities that helped shape my future.

“But opportunities are becoming harder to access today, particularly for people who don’t come from an affluent background.

“Creative potential should never be determined by a family’s finances, yet these findings suggest cost is becoming an increasingly significant barrier to pursuing a career in dance.

“That’s a real concern, because talent exists everywhere – and we can’t afford to lose the next generation of dance artists and what they’ll contribute to our culture.”

The study also found 45 per cent feel the UK is missing out on dance talent which could contribute to culture, creative industries and the arts sector.

Participants believe this is due to families not being able to afford the costs of travel, equipment and competitions (63 per cent) and some young people not being able to afford creative careers (57 per cent).

Meanwhile, 67 per cent believe talent is being overlooked because they live in parts of the country with fewer creative pathways.

In total, 80 per cent believe those from less affluent backgrounds face more barriers to pursuing careers in dance.

Just six per cent believe they are on a truly even keel when it comes to making it in the industry according to the OnePoll.com data.

And only 29 per cent believe there are enough opportunities for young people to dance in their area.

This rises to 39 per cent for Londoners yet falls as low as 19 per cent for people of Yorkshire and the Humber – the lowest of any region.

Choreographers, dance-makers and artists have been encouraged to sign up to the bursary on the Julia Rausing Sky Arts Bursaries website.

Phil Edgar-Jones, trustee of the foundation and executive director of unscripted content at Sky, said: “Dance is one of Britain’s great creative strengths. It’s an artform that brings people together, tells powerful stories and reflects the diversity of communities across the UK.

“With public funding under pressure, many dance artists increasingly rely on the support of dance organisations, charities and funders to develop their careers.

“That’s why initiatives like this are so important.”

Ashley Banjo added: “No young person should feel that a career in dance is out of reach because they can’t afford lessons, travel or competitions, or because there aren’t enough opportunities close to home.

“Talent can come from anywhere, and your background shouldn’t determine your future.”

JUNO Temple has secretly married her long-time boyfriend Michal Szymanski.

The American actress made the confession as she promoted the upcoming series of Ted Lasso on a TFI Unplugged Special, out today.

Juno, who plays Keeley Jones in the hit Apple TV series, opened up about meeting Michael during the second series of filming when he was driving for Hannah Waddingham.

Speaking to TFI Unplugged and Virgin Radio UK Breakfast Show host Chris Evans, Juno said: “I got married, we met on season two of Ted Lasso.”

MO Gilligan revealed the shock moment he was hunted by SIX police cars and a helicopter – before officers recognised him.

The comedian, 38, recalled the time police mistook him for someone else and tailed him after initially believing the car he was driving was “stolen”.

Luckily for Mo, some of the officers were fans of his and recognised him from off the telly, quickly realising they had made a mistake.

Appearing on the latest episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, Mo said: “One time I got pulled over by the police and there were six cars, and this was when I was doing TV and stuff. I’ll never forget that one.

A stunned Louis was left shocked and asked: “A helicopter?”

Mo continued: “Swear on my life… I got the video as well,” to which Louis asked again: “You were being tailed by a helicopter?”

The TV presenter went on: ” Yeah. When the helicopter came, it was weird because obviously I hadn’t done anything, but I was like, ‘Ooh, wow, this is a little bit exciting’.

“But also knowing, I’m like, ‘You’re really wasting your time’.

“Then some of the officers, I could tell they was a bit like, ‘Oh, I think I recognise that guy’.”

Mo then explained that the cops thought he was driving a stolen car but failed to give him more information when quizzed.

He shared: “They said that the car that I had was previously stolen. And I was like, ‘Is it the same car, colour, or is it the same number plate?’ I said, ‘They’re two different things’. But they never really gave me an answer.

“In the end, it was like, ‘Oh, it’s just not the same car’. And once they knew, everyone just scattered.

“Every, every car was just like, ‘Oh, well, it’s not him then’. Helicopter gone.”

Documentary-maker and podcast host Louis was keen to know if the police recognised him.

Mo said: “Yeah. I think the officers then started recognising me.

“Things changed massively once they realised it wasn’t me.

“They were like, ‘Okay, cool, yeah, it’s fine’.

“But part of me was thinking, ‘This is a lot. I don’t need six cars and a helicopter’.

“At the same time, it did feel a bit like GTA when you get five or six stars.”

Last September, The Sun revealed that Mo had welcomed a baby with his model fiancee Taia Tulher.

Pals said at the time that his partner gave birth over the summer.

A source said: “Mo and Taia have their baby and are in a bubble of bliss.

“She gave birth quite a few weeks ago now and she has been getting back to normal life.

This was to give the impression that there was no ongoing feud between the pair and to explain away Blake’s absence.  

After the songstress refused a ‘threat’ was allegedly made by the Gossip Girl alum that she would expose ‘ten years’ worth of private and intimate messages to the public.

The conversations touch on Taylor’s high profile romances and other personal exchanges.

“It was the ultimate blow to their friendship,” the source said. 

“The threat to expose Taylor’s most intimate confidences unless she posted something to explain why Blake was missing at the Super Bowl was outrageous.

“There was no going back from that.”

Michael Gottlieb, Lively’s attorney, denied that any threat occurred, stating: “This is categorically false. We unequivocally deny all of these so-called allegations, which are cowardly sourced to supposed anonymous sources, and completely untethered from reality.”

The BFFs’ close bond took a hit in 2024 after Taylor got dragged into Blake’s lawsuit against her It Ends with Us co-star and director, Justin Baldoni.

“The Nova Festival is a mirror of my world as a DJ and I have played many such festivals, including in Israel so it resonated with me and I felt compelled to write something. I could have been there and we know that there were people from more than 40 countries who were. I felt these deep emotions and is wrote this song for them.

George was set to take on the role of King Herod in the London theatre show, beginning August 3rd, but in a statement on Thursday night, his manager announced he will ‘no longer appear’.

Taking to social media, George’s manager Paul Kemsley wrote: “After careful consideration, I have decided, in my capacity as Boy George’s manager, that he will no longer be appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium.

“The decision has been made with the utmost respect for the producers, the creative team and the entire company. We are grateful for the professionalism and understanding they have shown throughout and sincerely wish everyone involved every success with the production.”

George’s PR apologised to fans who purchased tickets in the hopes of seeing George perform, admitting the decision would be a “disappointment” for some.

He added: “George has never been afraid to stand by his personal convictions, and I have always respected him for that. Equally, I believe it is my responsibility to make decisions that are in the best interests of my artist while also showing respect to others.

“In this instance, I felt it was right to step aside, allowing the production to remain the focus, while ensuring everyone involved can move forward with mutual respect and goodwill.”

After a pause, Katie explained how she and children Junior, 21, and Princess, 19 – who she shares with ex-husband Peter Andre – were planning to also have frogs, famously Harvey’s favourite animal, inked on them. 

Harvey lives with ADHD, autism, genetic condition Prader-Willi Syndrome, and septo-optic dysplasia, which causes blindness.

Defending her decision to allow Harvey to have the tattoo, Katie said: “He is 24, he is a man. I know he’s got complex needs.

Katie then explained how Harvey is very aware of his popularity on social media, where he has 348,000 followers, and revealed he asks for his artwork to be posted on the platform for his fans. 

Clearly wanting to allow Harvey to live as normal a life as possible, Katie also shared plans to take him to Ibiza after he expressed a desire to go to a nightclub. 

Harvey’s father is ex-footballer Dwight Yorke, who Katie has called out repeatedly through the years for lack of involvement in their son’s life.

Comedian Jason Manford also revealed the devastating depth of their nearly two-decade friendship.

He said: “Describing Neil as my PR manager does not come close to describing what he meant to me.

“He was a trusted friend of almost 20 years, a confidant and one of the most loyal, noble and brilliant men I have ever known.”

Mr Reading’s star-studded client list also included John Bishop, Sir Lenny Henry and Paul McKenna.

Bishop said: “Neil was a true gentleman. He was too humble to realise how much he meant to people and I know he will be greatly missed.”

McKenna said: “Neil was one of the finest people I’ve ever known.”

Businessman Nick Candy, who was a close friend of Mr Reading, said the publicist’s impact stretched far beyond the spotlight.

He said: “Neil wasn’t just a brilliant publicist – he was a true friend and one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known.”

Mr Reading launched his agency in 1992, building it into a formidable entertainment, consumer and lifestyle PR operation.

The company later expanded into business, property and fashion, while forging links with agencies across Europe and the United States.

Through decades at the heart of showbiz, Mr Reading became a trusted figure behind some of Britain’s biggest names and productions.

He is survived by his wife Claire and daughter Rosa.

Mr Reading’s career was built on a knack for turning famous names into headline-makers, long before social media transformed the publicity game.

He struck out on his own in 1992 at just 22, quickly building an agency around personal publicity and an increasingly glittering roster of household names.

By 1997, he was representing stars including Jonathan Ross, Michael Flatley, Jack Dee, Lee Evans and Ben Elton, while also working with clients outside showbiz.

His agency went on to become a formidable force behind some of Britain’s biggest entertainment launches.

In his 1997 Independent interview, he described personal PR as his “first love”.

JARED Leto has broken his silence on allegations of criminal sexual conduct, calling them “categorically false”.

Four women including accused the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman of criminal sexual conduct, with one alleging he raped her as a teenager.

He said: “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”

The allegations against the Oscar winner, 54, date from when the women were aged between 16 and 19.

One accuser alleges she had sex with Leto when she was 17, which under Californian laws would be classed as statutory rape.

The Hollywood star, aged 34 at the time, invited the woman and a friend to his Californian home, the alleged accuser told the BBC.

She claims Leto told her friend to wait in a separate room as the alleged rape took place.

A second woman claims she was sexually assaulted in a “dingy” Las Vegas motel bathroom when she was 17.

Leto, who was in his early 30s at the time, allegedly invited the girl into the bathroom as he showered and made her touch him inappropriately.

A third claims the Dallas Buyers Club star threatened her with sexual assault when she was 19 after the pair were left alone in a hotel room.

The allegations came after a Thirty Seconds to Mars concert at London’s O2 Arena in 2013 when Leto would have been 41.

A fourth accused Leto of grooming her and alleges he once took advantage of his celebrity status by making repeated sexually explicit phone calls to her when she was 16.

He suggested they should have sex on at least one occasion, the alleged victim claims.

The accusations all come from a new BBC documentary titled Jared Leto: Hollywood‘s Dark Secret.

The BBC claims they have seen at least one non-disclosure agreement (NDA) sent to a woman aimed at preventing her from talking about her relationship with Leto.

Another woman also accuses the Morbius lead of ordering a security guard to take her backstage at a music festival when she was 14.

OLIVIA Attwood has revealed why she decided against posting screenshots to ‘expose’ her ex-husband Bradley Dack.

The news comes after Charlotte closed down another one of her businesses last month.

She had announced that Studio Yours, which was a creative space for content creation in the North East, was being closed.

Her post read: “After an incredible couple of years, we’ve made the difficult decision to close Studio Yours.

“We want to say a huge thank you to every single person & business who booked in to use our creative space.

“It has been a privilege to welcome so many amazing businesses, creatives, families and brands through our doors, and we’re so grateful for the memories we’ve made together.”

The post continued: “We will be selling furniture & production equipment so if you’ve had your eye on anything, or would be interested in purchasing items from the studio, please send us a message for more information.

This comes as Katie has finally been “allowed” to film the show after previously being banned from production.

After fallout from Princess’ dad and his wife Emily being allowed on the show they both took a step back to avoid further drama.

Following Katie and Peter’s truce back in February, Princess hinted that both her parents would feature in series three – which they have.

In March, she said: “I mean, the good thing is now, obviously, my mum and dad have come out with an agreement to be fine.

“So hopefully season three, they will actually both be in it which is amazing. It’s so good now because there is just no issues.”
