‘I’m so proud of my mum’s amazing legacy and the lives she continues to help save,’ says Dame Deborah James’ son

THE son of Dame Deborah James has honoured her “amazing” legacy by following in her fundraising footsteps.

Hugo Bowen ran the Royal Parks Half Marathon at the weekend, smashing his target to raise £3,000 for her Bowelbabe Fund, in true Dame Debs style.

The 18-year-old told The Sun: “Running was something Mum and I used to do when I was younger, we often did park runs and I think I spurred her on to run a little faster.

“It was amazing, there was so much support along the route, which really helped motivate me to run harder and faster than I would have.

“It meant so much to be able to run in memory of her, and the amazing change she has inspired.”

Reflecting on the advice his running-obsessed mum would’ve given before the race, he added: “She would definitely have told me to make sure I had had a poo.

“And to ‘go smash it’, which I probably did a bit too much at the start, so I was super tired towards the end.”

Hugo was 14 years old when Dame Deborah died at the age of 40 in June 2022, five and a half years after being diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer

In the last weeks of her life, the Sun columnist launched her Bowelbabe Fund, aiming to raise £250,000 to help fund research into the disease to help prevent “any future Deborahs”, and give cancer patients the hope of new and better treatments.

So far, the Fund has supported more than 11 different projects, including a state-of-the-art interventional radiology machine at The Royal Marsden hospital where Deborah was treated.

Other scientific studies that have received a contribution from the Fund include one that is investigating personalised medicine for patients with bowel cancer, a cause Dame Debs was very passionate about.

And earlier this year, Deborah’s husband Seb Bowen, parents Heather and Alistair James and brother Ben James were on hand when the new Bowelbabe Lab was unveiled at The Francis Crick Institute, home to a team of scientists using ‘mini bowel tumours’ or organoids to test new and more targeted treatments.

Just days later Heather and Alistair were invited to a reception with King Charles where His Majesty hailed Deborah “an inspiration to us all, in sickness and health”.

The King went on to quote Debs parting message to her followers before she died: “Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope.”

“I’m honestly so proud of Mum and everything the Fund has done to help others,” Hugo added.

“I remember when she set it up she had a target of £250,000 and now we are at over £18million raised – it is beyond what any of us could’ve imagined.

“It’s such a beautiful legacy for my Mum and the research it is funding will save so many lives.”

Inspired by his mum, Hugo has already added another £4,300 to the Fund’s total, and thanked all those who have supported him so far.

“Everyone has been so supportive, I thought £3,000 would be a really difficult target to hit but we’ve smashed it and I’m so happy and honestly so surprised,” he added.

“I’m really grateful to everyone that has donated.”

Hugo was just the latest in the family to take on a running challenge, with Debs’ brother Ben and sister Sarah taking on the London Marathon this year – Sarah wearing the same poo emoji costume her sister was often seeing running in.

The signs of bowel cancer you need to know – remember BOWEL

  1. B:Bleeding

There are several possible causes of bleeding from your bottom, of blood in your poo.

Bright red blood could come from swollen blood vessels, haemorrhoids or piles, in your back passage.

Dark red or black blood could come from your bowel or stomach.

Blood in your stools is one of the key signs of bowel cancer, so it’s important to mention it to your doctor so they can investigate.

2. O: Obvious change in loo habits

It’s important to tell your GP if you have noticed any changes in your bowel habits, that lasts three weeks or longer.

It’s especially important if you have also noticed signs of blood in your poo.

You might notice you need to go to the loo more often, you might have looser stools or feel like you’re not going enough or fully emptying your bowels.

Don’t be embarrassed, your GP will have heard a lot worse! Speak up and get it checked.

3. W: Weight loss

This is less common than the other symptoms, but an important one to be aware of. If you’ve lost weight and don’t really know why, it’s worth mentioning to your GP.

You may not feel like eating, feel sick, bloated and not hungry.

4. E: Extreme tiredness

Bowel cancer that causes bleeding can cause a lack of iron in the body – anaemia. If you develop anaemia you’re likely to feel tired and your skin might look pale.

5. L: Lump or pain

As with lots of other forms of cancer, a lump or pain can be a sign of bowel cancer.

It’s most likely you’ll notice a pain or lump in your stomach or back passage.

See your GP if it doesn’t go away, or if it affects how you eat or sleep

Research published in the Journal of Ageing and Physical Activity also found gardeners were 30 per cent less likely to report falls than non-gardeners, with improved gait and balance helping you along the way.

World Arthritis Day is celebrated on October 12th, so why not get out there and garden – safe in the knowledge that you’ll actually be helping your aching joints.

Dr Wendy Holden, Arthritis Action’s Medical Advisor and Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at North Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, told Sun Gardening: “Being active and incorporating exercise into your life helps arthritis .

“Even if joints are hurting, they can’t be harmed by exercise.

“Getting outside in the fresh air, being close to nature and nurturing plants also improves both mood and mental health.

“Just remember to pace yourself, take breaks when you need them and make use of many types of adaptive tools available to assist you.”

She added: “Whatever type of arthritis you have, staying active, keeping your joints moving and looking after your sleep and mental wellbeing are all vital to help beat pain.”

Naomi Patrick, Clinical Director at Medella Home Physio & Occupational Therapy, based in Dorset and Wiltshire, added: “Pruning requires controlled movements that work through the full range of motion in shoulders, elbows and wrists.

“These actions can help maintain joint flexibility and may reduce stiffness in people with early-stage arthritis.

“The reaching and snipping motions help maintain the upper body mobility that’s essential for everyday tasks like dressing, cooking and personal care.

“Research shows these movements can be as effective as targeted exercise therapy for certain conditions.

TOP GARDENING TIPS FROM ARTHRITIS ACTION

There’s plenty you can do in you garden if you follow these tips…

Plan ahead: Take time to plan what you want to do, how you will do it and who can help. This will save time and effort in the long run.
Warm up: As with any physical activity, it’s important to warm up first. Potter about, do some light work, ensure you are dressed appropriately for the weather, and have the tools you need to hand.
Start low, go slow. Gradually increase how long you’re active for, and the effort you make while doing it.
Pace yourself: It can be tempting to spend hours working in the garden or want to get a job finished but this could leave you feeling stiff and sore the next day. Take time to ‘stop and smell the roses’!
Take breaks: Staying in the same position for too long can lead to stiffness and pain. Be sure to schedule frequent stretch breaks.
Lighten the load: Many gardening activities can put extra stress on your joints, whether it’s kneeling for a long time, lifting heavy loads or gripping garden tools. You can use assistive devices to help.
Bring the garden to you: If working at low levels is difficult for your hips, knees or back, consider raised planters or an elevated container garden. You may find it easier working from a seated or standing position rather than having to bend down or kneel.
Change tasks: As the saying goes, sometimes ‘a change is as good as a rest’. If you’re keen to continue working in your garden but want to minimise the strain on your joints, change tasks often to use different parts of your body. If you’ve been kneeling for a while, try a task in a standing or seated position.

“For those with painful joints, we recommend using lightweight, ergonomic secateurs and taking regular breaks,” she said.

Reduce stress on joints and muscles from repetitive movements by using garden tools that keep hands and wrists in a good position

Reduce the amount of weeding you do by applying a weed barrier with mulch
Reduce the amount of force required to trim plants by using power assisted tools

Wasteful NHS bosses told there’s ‘nowhere to hide’ by Streeting after three quarters of hospitals revealed to be in debt

HEALTH Secretary Wes Streeting has told wasteful NHS bosses there is “nowhere to hide”.

It comes after league tables revealed three quarters of hospitals are in debt.

Mr Streeting vowed a crackdown after rankings showed 99 out of 134 major NHS trusts in England are blowing budgets.

At least 38 fell to the sub-standard third or bottom fourth tier due to financial mismanagement.

They were relegated even if their medical care was good. In all 80 per cent of NHS hospitals were rated below standard.

Mr Streeting has refused to increase the £200billion health budget without tough reform.

Hospitals are estimated to have gone into the red by more than £600million last year.

That is while a record 2,600 bosses are paid over £110,000 a year, and some over £300,000.

Even chief executives at the ten worst-ranked hospitals are earning more than PM Sir Keir Starmer’s £172,000 salary.

Mr Streeting said: “Any football supporter will tell you the table doesn’t lie.

“Now there is nowhere for wasteful spenders to hide.”

He ordered hospitals to slash spending on agency staff and stop sending letters by post.

The NHS’s costly London HQ will close.

Bosses who cannot balance their books will also be denied pay rises and bonuses.

NHS England boss Sir Jim Mackey said tough measures are beginning to stem losses.

Baby whose mum was not vaccinated against whooping cough dies after contracting the infection

A BABY whose mother was not vaccinated against whooping cough has died after contracting the infection.

The UK Health Security Agency said the tot, thought to be under the age of one, died between March and June.

It is the first whooping cough death in the UK this year and comes after a child died of measles in Liverpool last month.

The agency’s Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam said: “Sadly, we are again reminded how severe whooping cough can be for very young babies.

“Vaccination is the best defence.

“It is vital pregnant women and infants receive their vaccines at the right time, ideally between 20 and 32 weeks.

“This passes protection to their baby in the womb so that they are protected from birth.”

Overall vaccination rates for primary school pupils are at the lowest for 15 years — with almost one in five not fully protected from diseases.

Over the coming weeks, millions of children will be flooding into classrooms across the UK.

And there’s a real risk they will return home with more than a few new friends and knowledge.

Pharmacist Thorrun Govind tells Sun on Sunday Health: “There’s often lots of hugging and playing between friends they haven’t seen all summer — and all that close contact means germs can easily spread.

“They also tend to cough and sneeze without covering their mouths and don’t always wash their hands without supervision.

“With early wake-ups, hard work in lessons and sports clubs, children can also get tired, which weakens their immune systems, leaving them prone to picking up illnesses.”

I CHEW so much gum I could put a cow to shame – but not all gums are good for you thanks to the sweeteners, sugar and chemicals in them.

DISPOSABLE vapes are being sold for as little as 29p in a “crazy” fire sale before they are banned this weekend. 

It means they are being flogged for less than a Cadbury’s chocolate Freddo bar — which now costs 30p in supermarkets.

From Sunday it will be illegal to sell single-use e-cigarettes in the UK under new laws to protect kids and reduce landfill. 

But online sellers are desperate to avoid being stuck with illegal stock with £200 fines looming. 

One site boasting a “UK Vape Bargain Blast” is selling Flavaah Bar disposable vapes for 29p each, down from £5. 

Elf Bars are on sale for 49p each, also down from a fiver. 

And a packet of 20 e-cigs can cost just £10, which would have been £100 a year ago. 

Kate Pike, from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, told The Sun: “This is crazy. 

“We are anticipating a challenging spike in illegal operations and supply during the changeover. 

“Shops have been warned and told to run down their stocks and I’ve seen some unbelievably low prices. 

This is an addictive product and we shouldn’t be selling them for these prices, but they aren’t doing anything wrong at this stage.” 

Campaigners We Vape said it showed the new law will create a black market and is “impossible to enforce”.

Ministers have brought in the rule as part of a drive to deter children and teenagers, who often use single-use vapes in fruity flavours, with flavours also set to be banned. 

They also acted on environmental concerns about huge amounts of plastic and lithium batteries being thrown out, with an estimated one million vapes binned every day.
