‘Smoking couple’ on UK TUI jet leave flyers stranded for 17 hours in ‘warzone’ airport scenes

The plane to London Gatwick from Cancun was diverted almost five hours into the flight

Passengers spent hours in cramped conditions awaiting news on their flight home

Passengers were left stranded at an airport for over 17 hours a flight was diverted due to a couple apparently smoking onboard. Brit Terry Lawrance, 66, said it was like a “war zone” with passengers camped out on rows of airbeds, after his flight home from Cancun, Mexico, on was grounded.

About an hour after take-off on July 8, the captain of the London Gatwick-bound TUI flight announced two passengers had been smoking in the toilets, and that if it continued, he would have to divert. After another three-and-a-half hours, the captain announced the plane would now be diverting to Bangor International Airport, Maine, US.

They landed at 21.30 local time – and the two alleged smokers were turfed off the flight. But Terry said the other passengers sat in their seats for another five hours and even taxied to take-off, before the flight was abandoned as the original crew were not able to continue to operate the rest of the flight back to Gatwick due to legal working hours.

Consequently, a relief flight was readied immediately, and a new crew were dispatched from the UK to the US to fly everyone back. The passengers were then kept in a room – which Terry claims is part of the military airbase section of the airport – for over 15 hours while the airline works to sort a relief crew.

A flight to take passengers home to Gatwick eventually took off at 15:00 local time (20:00 BST) on Wednesday, July 9 – with all passengers now safely home. Videos taken by Terry show rows of beds as passengers awaited updates, whilst another video shows vehicles approaching the plane after touching down in Bangor.

Terry said: “We were there for over 12 hours – it all went pear shaped. Everybody was fed up. In fairness, they started bringing out airbeds, but it was like free-for-all for vultures.

“It was like a warzone in a lounge – rows and rows of beds. All our luggage was still on the plane whilst we waited. TUI told us a relief crew was being sent from the UK because the current crew had used up their hours.”

Tracking on Flightradar24 shows the plane turning back towards Maine, shortly after entering Canadian airspace. Terry said: “After an hour the captain came on and said someone had been smoking in the toilet – he read the riot act and said if it continues, we’d have to divert.

“About three hours later, around the border with Canada and he came on to let us know that the plane was being diverted to Bangor, Maine. Once we landed, they removed the two passengers.

“They were obviously drunk. The captain then said we’d be getting going again once the paperwork has been done. We were sat on the plane on the ground for five hours – the plane started taxing again and we thought ‘great’ and then they said there was a problem with flight plan, and we have to get off.

“Next thing, we’re not going anywhere, and we’ve got to stay in this small lounge. We waited six or seven hours before we were offered a drink.”

TUI declined to comment.

Love Island mayhem as one boy ‘does bits’ with Casa Amor girl in shocking scenes

Love Island viewers are in for some serious drama as Casa Amor launches into chaos as one of the boys dives straight into bed and does ‘bits’ with a new girl

Casa Amor has barely kicked off, and already one Islander has taken things too far after jumping into bed with a new girl just hours after her entrance to the iconic villa.

The steamy moment reportedly took place on Friday night in the main bedroom, where the pair got down and dirty under the duvet. Though the footage hasn’t aired, insiders say it’s one of the most outrageous moments the show has seen in many years.

“This could be one of the most shocking Casa moments since Andrew Le Page licked Coco’s t** or whatever,” said a source. “They hit it off and one thing led to another.”

The identities of the couple are being kept secret to preserve the surprise, but the boy involved has already caused drama earlier in the series. “The lad has been in a love triangle and has made a girl cry with his actions,” the insider told The Sun.

ITV is reportedly undecided about when, or if, the intimate scene will air. “It was all under the duvet in the main bedroom on Friday night,” the source said.

“Viewers will have to wait and see if ITV decide to air the footage or not. Tonight’s show will show the first day of Casa Amor, but the bedroom moment could be pushed to Monday or Tuesday because there’s already so much drama. It’s already looking like this could be one of the best Casa Amors ever.”

Elsewhere, tensions are rising in Casa Amor and the boys aren’t wasting time. On their first night, Dejon kicks things off with a flirty round of Truth or Dare to break the ice.

Things heat up fast as Ben dives in with a bold three-way kiss, including Harry’s ex, Emma. Harrison follows suit, locking lips with the girl he fancies most, until the group has to step in and call time on the unusually long snog.

Harry soon comes face to face with his ex girlfriend Emma, who greets him with a cheeky: “Surprise!” He later confirms the ‘E’ tattoo on his wrist is, indeed, for her.

As the Islanders chat about their types, Yaz says she needs emotional depth in a partner. Emma doesn’t miss a beat, leaning toward Harry and saying: “Well that’s you out.”

When asked to rate his connection with Toni, Harrison admits: “Seven, could be better.” Meanwhile, Tommy doesn’t hold back with the new arrivals: “There’s definitely a few of you that tickle my fancy.”

After the shock of her entrance, Harry and his ex Emma finally catch up, and he says, “I don’t need you to come and tell me off.” But Emma has no plans to stay quiet as she calls him out on his bad behaviour with Helena.

“It’s disgraceful though… like, how are you still doing the same thing?” she says. “The way you’ve been moving with Helena honestly… you two deserve each other… two snakes.”

TV chef urges Love Island to ‘do better’ after ‘damaging’ elimination scenes

TV chef Lorraine Pascale has hit out at Love Island over what she believes to be ‘tokenism’ after Alima was dumped from the villa and Billykiss coupled up with Conor

TV chef slams Love Island over 'damage' to Black community - 'Do better'

TV chef Lorraine Pascale has shared her opinion, claiming Love Island is ‘reinforcing the idea there’s only room for one Black cast member’ at a time after newbie Billykiss Azeez replaced OG contestant Alima Gagigo. The recent episode saw Alima and bombshell Ryan Bannister get kicked out of the villa in a double elimination.

As per the show’s format, the stars chose who to partner up with in the recoupling. Conor Phillips chose to couple up with Billykiss after they bonded during their first date, leaving Alima single and dumped from the villa. This Morning chef Lorraine took to her X, formerly known as Twitter, to complain about the show’s “tokenism”, writing: “Wow @LoveIsland. You finally cast a Black woman who was thriving, and then you replace her with another Black woman?

“This isn’t representation, it’s tokenism. You’re reinforcing the idea that there’s only room for one of us at a time. That’s not diversity – that’s damage. Do better.”

It is understood ITV refutes any suggestion that any editorial decision it makes is based on race

Some fans shared how Alima could have been saved, with one user writing: “This is actually Ben’s fault when you think about it cause if he really liked Alima he would’ve recouped with her a few days ago, then Connor and Helena would’ve been coupled up and she would’ve been dumped tonight.”

“Bro, they should’ve asked if anyone wanted to couple up, Ben would’ve stood up for Alima, Helena would’ve been finally dumped ffs we were so close ugh,” another said.

During her time in the villa, Alima formed a connection with Remell; however, it came crashing down when she learnt he had shared a number of kisses with Poppy at the sleepover.

Upon her exit, Alima has spoken out about where she stands with Remell on the outside, and all things villa life. “Remell and I were getting stronger and stronger by the day,” she said of their relationship.

“When he got the text about the sleepover, I was with him, and as soon as he started smiling.

Billykiss Azeez
Newcomer Billykiss coupled up with Conor(Image: ITV/Shutterstock)

“I knew this guy; he wasn’t going to be up to any good. When I saw the clip, from that moment on, I knew it would take a lot for us to go back to how we were before. I wasn’t surprised by his behaviour at all.”

She was asked whether she’d be open to having a conversation with Remell after leaving the show. She said: “I don’t hate him and I’m more than happy to be civil, he was part of my experience after all! But in terms of anything romantic, I’ll keep myself away from that.”

After Remell left the villa, Alima found a connection with Ben, but her time was cut short before they could really give it a go. However, Alima’s departure doesn’t mean the end of the road for the couple.

“I want to see how he acts now that I’m not there and if he finds a connection. If he comes back single, I would be interested in seeing if there’s something we could continue…” she teased.

Love Island exes clash behind the scenes of This Morning leaving Chris Hughes ‘shaken’

Chris Hughes is said to be ‘upset’ that his Love Island ex Olivia Attwood landed a role with ITV’s This Morning after her ‘hitting out’ at his current relationship online

Chris Hughes and Olivia Attwood’s bitter history is threatening to spill over into ITV’s This Morning as the exes now find themselves working on the same show.

Seven years on from their fiery split the former Love Island stars are set to run into each other again as Olivia steps in as a guest host on the daytime programme this summer, which has reportedly left Chris rattled. Sources told The Sun that Olivia’s new role has sparked behind-the-scenes headaches for This Morning bosses, who are keen to keep the former couple apart.

Chris has been appearing regularly on the show as a roving reporter since his stint on Celebrity Big Brother, and it seems that Olivia’s arrival has thrown a spanner in the works for him.

An insider said: “Chris has been doing regular presenting gigs on location for This Morning ever since Celebrity Big Brother.

“He was starting to build up a really good relationship with the producers on the show and was hoping it would lead to more regular appearances over the summer – including a potential spot on the sofa or in the studio.

“Olivia coming on board to front the show for several dates over the next few weeks feels like a huge blow to him. He doesn’t want to have to do live crosses to his ex in front of the nation – it’s so awkward and he feels like the viewers will be scrutinising their every interaction and every little facial expression will be analysed. It’s the last thing he wants.”

Although it’s been years since they dated, Chris is said to have been hurt by comments Olivia made about his relationship with housemate JoJo Siwa during his time in the Celebrity Big Brother house.

While he was on the Channel 4 reality show, Olivia revealed she needed therapy after dating him. She also accused him of acting “creepy” around JoJo, who is 11 years younger than Chris.

In one TikTok video, Olivia said: “The therapy was expensive and now I’m going to have to go back for another round because I’m getting trolled on this app and because every weird, creepy thing that happens, I’m getting tagged in it.”

She went on to claim Chris was putting on a performance for the cameras. She added: “[Some] people, they go on reality TV, they are one person and when you experience them off camera… It’s like shapeshifters.”

When she was asked about Chris’s romance with JoJo after the show online, Olivia hinted he might be using the relationship for publicity, quipping: “she’s really famous”.

One of Chris’s friends has claimed he was upset by the snippy remarks, adding: “He didn’t understand why she needed to comment on him at all, as he never mentions her publicly. He has always only said positive things about her, both at the time of the split and since then.”

They went on to share more about his current dilemma, saying: “Now, just when all that post-CBB stuff has died down and he is happy with JoJo and really busy with work, Liv lands a gig on This Morning.

“Chris was really shocked as she is a regular on Loose Women, so he didn’t expect her to cross over to the show he works on. He felt like they had their own patches and now that’s no longer the case.

“Liv’s basically the new golden girl of ITV daytime, and he worries he’s going to be phased out, especially as she is the one with the plum main presenter spot on the sofa and he is a smaller part of the This Morning family.

“Ultimately, if bosses have to choose between her and him, he fears he’ll be the more expendable one. He’s also really not someone who likes conflict, so he would rather walk away.”

This Morning and Chris Hughes’ reps have been contacted for comment.

There’s said to be “emotional” and powerful Emmerdale scenes on the way, as a sad twist continues to rock one family.

Lisa Riley and Natalie J Robb spoke exclusively to The Mirror recently, and teased some big moments ahead. Mandy Dingle actress Lisa revealed scenes recently filmed gave her “goosebumps” with her in awe of two of her co-stars and their heartbreaking performances.

In the scenes yet to air there will be “mixed emotions” for a number of characters, with Lisa hinting the scenes will give viewers “goosebumps”. Just weeks ago it was confirmed to the Dingles that Cain Dingle’s son Nate Robinson was dead.

The family found out he’d been murdered and dumped in a lake, where his body was for months before being uncovered. In a cruel twist the family believed he’d cut them all off, with them speaking badly of him for abandoning his daughter Frankie.

Now fingers are being pointed at villagers with suspects everywhere, while fans know it was John Sugden that killed him and then covered it up. The cast recently filmed Nate’s funeral, with devastating scenes on the way.

Lisa spilled: “The funeral is so emotional. It was amazing. There are two performance that when you sit and watch them, and we know the script, we know what is happening, but then you see your colleagues perform… I got goosebumps.

“We love that as the Dingles, when someone does a good storyline you go, ‘you knocked that out of the park tonight’. It’s so nice and you see that, the Dingles will be coming together.”

Moira Dingle actress Natalie teased “heavy” scenes as the plot continues. She shared of the funeral and what’s ahead: “There’s emotional scenes. There’s some really heavy scenes ahead too.

“There’s scenes of confusion, scenes of anger, you get a lot of mixed emotions. But that’s Emmerdale isn’t it. That’s soaps for you.” Amy Walsh recently told us that her character Tracy, Nate’s wife, will soon unite with Cain to find out who killed him.

Just weeks ago it was confirmed to the Dingles that Cain Dingle's son Nate Robinson was dead

Amy told us: “Tracy and Cain do a little list together of who it could it be. We have ruled out some people we know.” Asked about John, Amy teased: “That was left on a bit of a cliffhanger actually. He’s the next name on the list…”

Before we get to see the dynamic duo figuring things out, there’s some “feisty” and “nasty” moments. Amy warned: “Tracy is feisty. The stuff she gets away with doing to Cain, I was nervous on set! I can’t believe I’m doing this to Cain Dingle!

“But it’s all brilliant, there’s such brilliant scenes. It gets really nasty between us and then there’s a really nice arc in the story eventually, where things will become a bit clearer. I can’t say too much but there is a lot to look out for.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok , Snapchat , Instagram , Twitter , Facebook , YouTube and Threads .

Linda Carter’s EastEnders exit ‘sealed’ as fans in tears over heartbreaking scenes

EastEnders fans were left in tears during tonight’s episode – as Linda realised her time in the Queen Vic had come to an end, with many fearing an exit for the character

The fallout of the police visit to the Queen Vic continued in tonight’s episode in EastEnders, as Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) realised her time as a landlady in the pub had come to an end. Now, fans have been left wondering if an exit is on the cards for the fan favourite.

It’s been a tough time for Linda lately, as she’s been left to run the pub alone, as her mother Elaine Peacock struggles with her split from husband George. However, Linda has her own problems to deal with, as she recently reached six months of sobriety, but it’s not been easy.

In tonight’s episode, Linda had a heart to heart conversation with Phil, as she detailed how hard it was to look after both herself and Elaine. “Sometimes you want to do the right thing but you’re in the hardest place to do it,” Phil said. “You’re an alcoholic running a pub.”

Later on, in emotional scenes, Linda was seen with Johnny, reminiscing on her relationship with Mick, when they had dreams of running a pub. With Mick gone, Linda couldn’t imagine happy times running the Vic anymore.

Instead, she told Johnny she’s been left fixated on the terrible things that have happened during her time there, including her killing of Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters). She then revealed to her mother Elaine that she wanted to sell up. However, Elaine wasn’t having any of it, as she snapped back: “Over my dead body!”

Fans were left in tears over Linda’s heartbreaking scenes with Johnny, with some left fearing an exit from Walford altogether would be on the way for Linda.

Taking to Reddit to discuss the episode, one fan penned: “Kellie Bright played an absolute blinder in today’s episode, but I hope she’s not leaving the Square,” as another responded: “I’ll be so upset if that happens!”

Another questioned: “So is Linda disappearing from the Square before Max comes back and notices he has another kid?”

Elsewhere, fans on X, formerly known on Twitter were praising Kellie Bright for her ground-breaking performance during the emotional episode. “Kellie Bright plays Landlady so convincing you forget she’s acting.

“Linda stepping down from all she’s ever known is a MASSIVE decision and I would say I’m more than apprehensive to see where she goes from here. No matter what, Kellie continues show her amazing talent #EastEnders,” said one.

Another emotional fan said: “Linda’s scenes have killed me off today,” as a third said: “Linda saying she can only picture the pain she’s gone through in the Vic and not the happy times with Mick has broken me. They have so many happy memories.”

What will a life outside of The Queen Vic look like for Linda?

EastEnders ‘confirms’ Bernie Taylor’s ‘exit story’ – as dramatic scenes air this week

EastEnders fans were left gutted when it was announced Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) would be leaving the show – and next weeks spoilers have teased a possible exit storyline

Bernie's recent gossip comes as Freddie was arrested for the attempted murder of Theo

Last month, it was revealed that Clair Norris would be leaving EastEnders after playing the role of Bernie Taylor for eight years. Now, in spoilers for next week, the soap appears to have teased the star’s upcoming exit storyline.

Bernie arrived in Walford in 2017 alongside mum Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) and late brother Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).

However, she’s the last one of her family members left on the Square with her mum Karen leaving EastEnders in 2023, shortly followed by the murder of her brother Keanu on Christmas Day.

Lately, fans have noticed a lack of the character on their screens, but spoilers for next week reveal a huge storyline for the star – which could be teasing towards her exit.

EastEnders viewers have demanded bosses axe Bernie Taylor, who's starred on the soap since 2017, after claiming she's 'ruined'
Bernie will be leaving the soap after eight years (Image: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron)

We’re revisiting The Six storyline once again at the start of the week. It starts when Bernie’s cousin Felix wants him to give Johnny her seal of approval, unaware that he helped cover up Keanu’s murder.

Denise then fears that if Johnny doesn’t win Bernie over, it could bring the past back to haunt them all.

However, that’s not Bernie’s only problem – as she’s tied up with the Panesars. Vicki notices some unusual invoices, although Bernie dismisses her concerns. However, Bernie isn’t getting away with things too quickly, as she’s later confronted by Ravi and Suki about the irregularities.

We know Bernie will be making her exit from the soap soon – but could next week’s dramatic storylines be leading to her departure?

Viewers of EastEnders have huge twists and turns on the way next week

Following Bernie’s exit, an EastEnders spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Clair will be leaving EastEnders later this year and we wish her all the best for the future.” Clair remained silent on her departure for a couple of weeks, until she attended the British Soap Awards at the end of last month.

Taking to her Instagram to post a picture of herself all glammed up in a teal dress on the night, Clair penned: “My last @thebritishsoapawards with my EE family. We [broom emoji] up last night, 8 awards & I couldn’t be prouder to be apart of this team! What a way to end this amazing journey, head held high & beaming from ear to ear.”

Clair was supported by both fans as colleagues in her post, with James Farrar, who plays Zack Hudson writing: “Head held HIGH,” along with a number of red heart emojis.

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

‘I was on ITV’s 1% Club with Lee Mack and was shocked by the scenes we had to fake’

ITV’s quiz show, The 1% Club, which is hosted by Lee Mack, pits contestants against each other to try and win £100,000 by answering questions only 1% of the UK get right

ITV’s game show The 1% Club has become a huge hit since it first hit our screens in 2022(Image: ITV)

ITV’s game show The 1% Club has become a huge success since it first hit our screens in 2022. Hosted by Not Going Out star, Lee Mack, the primetime programme features IQ-style questions based on logic and common sense, as opposed to general knowledge. A total of 100 contestants are slowly whittled down as they attempt to make it to the end and successfully answer a question in 30 seconds, that only 1% of the population can get right in a bid to bag £100,000.

However, what viewers don’t know about the show is that some of the scenes are actually fake – according to a former contestant, who has lifted the lid on the smash-hit series, which she filmed in October last year. Spilling the beans on the programme, Heidi Phillips, 49, said she bagged a place on the show after seeing an advert on Facebook and then having a mock 1%-style quiz on Zoom.

Lee Mack hosting The 1% Club
ITV’s quiz show, The 1% Club, which is hosted by Lee Mack, pits contestants against each other to try and win £100,000(Image: ITV)

Revealing what really goes on behind the scenes of the series, which is one of ITV’s most popular offerings, she claimed some of the scenes were fake, revealing that Lee’s jokes are not filmed at the same time as the contestants are answering the questions.

Heidi explained, while talking to Fruity Slots: “While contestants are answering questions on the tablet, Lee usually takes the time to make a joke to the audience at home. But all his comical parts are filmed later.

“When we’re answering the question, he remains silent. Then he has to be filmed asking the question again and we have to pretend to put our answers in. That was a bit weird!”

Heidi also said the contestants had to abide by a very strict rule on the show, which, if flouted would mean they would be forced to hand back any prize money – immediately.

The contestant, who bowed out of the programme at the 35% question, said: “When we got put in our seats in the studio, they gave us the tablets and told us it was important to keep our eyes firmly locked on the screens and not look at each other.

“There were actually invigilators who go back through the show episode to make sure every contestant plays the game fairly.

“You could have won the cash prize but if they go back through filming and see you glanced over at another contestant’s screen before answering, you’ll forfeit the prize.”

Heidi added: “That’s not happened yet – but it was a stern warning!”

Despite the strict warning from producers, Heidi said host, Lee, is very charming and “naturally funny”, sharing: “He’s honestly really funny. Very naturally funny. He also has banter with the warm-up comedian and creates a nice atmosphere.”

She also said she’d jump at the chance to go back on the show again and praised the programme’s staff for “going back over the funny anecdotes I’d shared with them and make sure I’d be happy to discuss it on the show if Lee (Mack) wanted to”.

Heidi, who also said contestants had to make sure they were dressed appropriately for the show, wearing “nothing low cut”, added: “They seemed really concerned about our welfare and us being happy to share things on TV. They really took the time to check in with us.”

And her advice for anyone wanting to go on the show, who has made it to the audition round? “When they ask you how you’ll spend the winnings, don’t say something boring like paying off the mortgage. Give a really wild question,” said Heidi, adding: “I made silly jokes that if I won the prize, I’d spend it on opening a trifle sandwich shop.”

Behind the scenes at a GP 8am scramble

Rob Sissons

Health correspondent, BBC East Midlands

BBC Two GP receptionists Jayne Bond and Sandra Brewster smiling ahead of their daily pressured stint answering the telephones first thing in the morning from patients trying to get an appointment from the surgery.BBC

Jayne Bond and Sandra Brewster answer the phones during the rush for a same-day GP appointment

Anyone who has ever tried to get a GP appointment in England will be familiar with the “8am scramble“, as you phone your local surgery desperately hoping to get through.

Many surgeries – like the Tudor House Medical Practice – open their telephone lines at 08:00, meaning that if you want an on-the-day appointment, you have to phone on the dot at 08:00.

This can prove a source of frustration, with Jayne Bond – part of a four-strong team at the increasingly busy practice – often at the sharp end of patients’ upset.

“Some people think we are Rottweilers, and we are trying to stop them getting appointments,” she said.

The practice invited the BBC to watch them at work first thing in the morning during the busiest part of their day, when those phone lines open.

The GP receptionists during the first part of their day answering dozens of calls that come within minutes.

The Tudor House Medical Practice in Nottingham has almost 7,000 patients

“When the phone lines open, it just goes manic,” fellow receptionist Sandra Brewster said.

She knows the scene at the practice, in Sherwood, is repeated at surgeries across the land when they release their same-day bookable appointments first thing.

“It is mad – we try and grab a cup of tea before the phones open up,” Sandra added.

Often potential patients can get frustrated when receptionists ask for more information.

Jayne, 66, said: “We are on the ball – we have to be.

“Some people think we are nosy, but we are just trying to get them to the right person.”

Eighty per cent of face-to-face GP appointments at the surgery are bookable on the day and released first thing, and typically within half an hour, they are gone.

A picture of the Tudor House Medical Practice an inner city surgery in Nottingham.

Like many surgeries, the practice has experienced increasing demand

We observed the pressure on a typical Wednesday morning.

Jayne said: “We normally call it ‘wacky Wednesday’ – it can be a very busy day.”

Only five minutes after the lines open, more than 30 people are queuing to get through.

The telephone system has recently been upgraded, with an option for people to request to be phoned back without the caller losing their place in the queue.

But despite this “improvement”, high demand will mean some inevitably miss out.

Sandra, also 66, admits receptionists can’t always give people they want.

“People have said to me, ‘well if I die it will be your fault’.

“There can be verbal abuse – you just have to go home and forget about it and remember it is the situation, not personal, but they are the calls you remember,” she said.

We observed that 50 people were booked in at the surgery within 25 minutes.

Tricia Gibbons is the manager of the Tudor House Medical Centre in Nottingham and is sat behind the main reception area.

Practice manager Tricia Gibbons says the call handlers “do a fantastic job”

This relentless demand for appointments is a picture repeated across the country, and has seen the government step in earlier this year.

The Labour government had pledged in its manifesto to end the early morning phone “scramble” for appointments, and in February, confirmed a deal to give an extra £889m a year to general practices.

The new contract says patients should be able to arrange appointments online throughout working hours, freeing up the phones for those who need them most, and making it easier for practices to triage patients based on medical need.

Practice manager Tricia Gibbons said patients were “getting more used to not always seeing a GP”.

The 56-year-old said: “When I first started 11 years ago, we only had access to GPs and trainee doctors.”

The surgery now has an expanded team of health professionals to complement the work of family doctors, including an advanced nurse practitioner and a clinical pharmacist, which can see patients.

Tricia stressed, though, that “the doctors are always there to offer back-up”.

“This model is about giving doctors more time to focus on more complex cases,” she said.

“Other members of the team are well placed to deal with the more minor illnesses and ailments.”

Dr Jonathan Lloyd a GP partner holding a consultation with a patient in his surgery

Dr Jonathan Lloyd, a GP partner, said demand meant there was “more pressure on doctors”

Dr Jonathan Lloyd, a GP partner at the surgery, said demand for primary care had gone up hugely since he began working as a doctor almost 30 years ago.

“The number of appointments the average patient has each year has increased, and people have got older, and there are more people with dementia and chronic disease,” he said.

“The number of GPs has not increased at the same rate, so there is more pressure on doctors.”

He said accessing primary care across the country was a “big problem”, but felt most patients were “comfortable” knowing they might not always see a doctor.

He said six out of 10 GP appointments were in person, with the rest on the phone, which “many people are quite happy about”.

“Our patients have control over that – if they want to see me face-to-face, they can,” he added.

‘Nowhere near a solution’

Latest annual figures from NHS England show that record numbers of appointments – more than 370 million – were offered by GP surgeries in 2024-25, with almost two-thirds face to face, and the rest virtual.

Four out of 10 appointments at surgeries are with doctors, and the rest with other health professionals.

More than half of appointments were booked at least a day ahead, with the rest on the same day.

Katie Bramall-Stainer, who chairs the British Medical Association GPs’ committee, previously told BBC Breakfast that the new government deal could see patients begin to notice a difference in six to 12 months, but said the overall situation was “nowhere near a solution”.

So for now, the likes of Jayne and Sandra will continue to keep an eye on the clock as 8am approaches.

One Emmerdale favourite’s return to the show could be imminent, with Amelia Flanagan who plays April Windsor spilling all.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, the actress, who won the award for Best Young Performer at this year’s event, finally spoke out about the big news that a comeback was on the cards. The return had been announced by boss Laura Shaw months ago, but no details were given and no date was revealed either.

April star Amelia has spoken for the first time about the looming return of Dylan Penders, played by actor Fred Kettle. The character debuted earlier this year as part of the teen’s huge storyline that saw her living on the streets after running away from home.

Dylan ended up following April to the village but after an overdose, he went to rehab and appeared to leave the show. The character proved a hit with fans though, and bosses decided to bring him back.

It’s now thought he will cause trouble for April and will feature in a big storyline in the village. He appeared to be filming already too which means he could be back onscreen within weeks.

Speaking to us about the return for the first some, Amelia shared she was thrilled and was excited to explore Dylan and April further. She also teased there was some “big” stuff ahead, while revealing all on growing up on the soap after more than 11 years in the role.

Amelia told us: “April has had an incredibly tough year with what she has been through, with the pregnancy and the homelessness storyline. April and Dylan didn’t leave things on the best terms, but I think what is important now is that he’s back.

“Who knows what will happen. It will be great to explore that relationship further, I think fans want to see that which is great.” Viewers have seen April having a tough time recently, struggling to adjust to life back in the village after the heartbreaking stillbirth if her daughter.

Her and her dad Marlon Dingle have been at each other’s throats for months, with Marlon struggling to get through to her and April trying to find her way. But there’s positive scenes ahead, with “big” storylines teased too.

Amelia told us: “I think hopefully the future is looking bright for all of them. They have been through so much with recent events. She’s been dealt a hard hand in life in the last year or so, and we’re gonna see more of April’s journey.

“She has been in the village for a long time now. She’s been growing as a person and it’s an incredible thing to explore with the show. I am excited for the bigger storylines to stick my teeth into.”

On her time on the show, she added: “I’ve been on the show for 11 and a half years now. It’s been a long time. With April’s journey, so much has happened, it’s important to remember what has led her to be the way she is now, as far back as Donna’s death. I think it’s brilliant exploring new things.”

Amelia also praised her co-star Mike Parr, who plays Ross Barton, for his support towards her. She said: “Ross is like a big brother to April and it’s very true to real life. I always say Mike is like a big brother. I love him to pieces, he’s incredible and we have the best time together. Hopefully we see more of them onscreen.”
