Jude Bellingham has been the best player at the World Cup so far, says former England striker Wayne Rooney.
Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham has scored six goals in six games for England, leaving him only two behind France’s Kylian Mbappe and Argentina’s Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot standings.
Erling Haaland, whose Norway side were eliminated by England in the quarter-finals, is on seven while Three Lions captain Harry Kane is level with Bellingham.
England play Messi’s Argentina on Wednesday in the second semi-final (20:00 BST). The match is live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app, and BBC Radio 5 Live.
“In terms of best in the world I think you’re looking at someone like Mbappe or Haaland,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show.
“Bellingham hasn’t quite hit those levels at Real Madrid this season, but he’s been the best player in the tournament for me.”
Bellingham, 23, has become a big-game player for England – with nine goals and three assists in World Cups and European Championships.
His Real Madrid team-mate Mbappe – with 12 – is the only European player to have scored more than nine goals in a major tournament before the age of 24.
Bellingham has averaged a goal or assist every 138 minutes at major tournaments for England, compared to one every 284 minutes in other international matches.
He scored in the group wins over Croatia and Panama at this World Cup, then twice against both Mexico and Norway in the knockout stage.
“With Jude, it’s all about energy, passion, desire, drive and that’s how he’s getting his rewards,” said Rooney.
“That’s very rare to have that. A lot of these top players rely on the ability and the technique to get their moments. Jude has desire and hunger and it’s so refreshing to see a player playing the toughest game but also doing it.
“That’s what fans want, especially the England fans. They want to see players running and working for the team and for the badge.
“He reminds me of me in terms of one minute you’re thinking, ‘this lad’s a genius’, and the next minute you’re thinking, ‘don’t go into that tackle, don’t get sent off’.
“It’s exactly how I was. But he’s obviously backing it up in the biggest tournament. There were doubters before but he’s put all that to bed.”
SAT in the BBC studio chatting about the World Cup, Wayne Rooney looked like half the man he was just a few months ago.
And as the coverage continues, whispers of fat jabs being behind his transformation are growing louder by the day. Here, insiders reveal what’s really going on with the former footballer – and the part played by his wife Coleen.

The Sun understands that the 40-year-old’s new look was masterminded by Coleen ahead of his big punditry gig.
Our insider explained: “Coleen knew Wayne wasn’t happy with the way he looked and how important this gig was for him, so she put him on a diet and exercise regime before he flew out to the US. He’s 40 now, so it felt like now or never.
“She has been encouraging him to work out with her in their home gym. They also have a PT who has been round to help him.
“Then there has been facials and various other treatments to make sure he’s looking his best and, of course, they went on a big shopping spree to make sure he looked super smart.”
It’s paid off – World Cup viewers have been very distracted by his appearance, with many questioning what his secret is.
One person asked: “Has Wayne Rooney been on the jabs lol .”
Another joked: “He’s on the jabs, he’s on the jabs, Wayne Rooney is shredding the fat!”
Someone else added: “Rooney suddenly looks like a 30 year old.”
It’s thought Wayne has in fact been following the macro diet, which involves tracking the intake of three essential macronutrients – proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
It’s certainly a stark contrast from the old Wayne, who famously had a McDonald’s before his Premier League debut for Everton and even took Ronaldo for a drive-thru when he arrived in Manchester.
He was also known for his love of his favourite Chinese – Wings in Manchester – which he has visited for decades.
During his stint managing Plymouth Argyle we’re told he loved a local pasty.
In 2013, Coleen – who was just 19 and new to Wag life – raised eyebrows when she insisted he had a healthy diet.
“They all think Wayne’s a big fat person and eats burgers every day, which he’s not, and I don’t know where they get it from,” she said.
“It does my head in because people really believe that. His favourite food is lettuce. He loves salad.”
It’s not just food that has changed for Wayne now though, he has cut down on booze.
Wayne has been very open about his struggles with alcohol in the past – at times drinking for two days straight.

He has said: “I’ve had many challenges, both on and off the pitch, and my escape was alcohol.”
He credits Coleen, his wife of 18 years, for saving him thanks to supporting him throughout it all.
“I honestly believe if she weren’t there I’d be dead,” he told the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “I’ve made mistakes in the past which are well documented and whatever but I’m a little bit different at times and she keeps me on that path and she’s done it for 20-odd years.
“I wanted to go out and enjoy my time with my friends and have a night out. It got to a point where I went too far – that was a moment in my life where I was struggling massively with alcohol. I didn’t think I could turn to anyone. I didn’t really want to because I didn’t want to put that burden on anyone.

“I just drank for two days straight. Come training and at the weekend I’d score two goals and then I’d go back and go and drink for two days straight again. She’s helped me control that massively. She’s managed me because I needed managing.”
Coleen has definitely put a shift in over the years with Wayne – aside from the troubling infidelity rumours, public booze battle and tumultuous career on the pitch, but we’re told the couple have actually never been happier.
Ever since I’m A Celebrity, Coleen has become the main breadwinner and the family have landed a 10-part Disney show – and it’s had a huge positive impact on Wayne.
Our insider added: “Coleen can’t get enough of the new Wayne. She’s really proud of him and it’s reignited a flame. She fancies him more than ever.”
More than 130 public figures express support for the proscribed group as the UK prepares for another legal fight.

More than 130 public figures have written to the UK’s Court of Appeal expressing support for Palestine Action, days before a hearing to decide on the lawfulness of the government’s ban on the direct action group.
A letter released Friday, bearing 132 signatures and addressed to the UK’s Court of Appeal, read: “We oppose genocide, we support Palestine Action.”

The declaration came in advance of hearings scheduled for April 28 and 29, during which the court is slated to hear the government’s appeal to uphold its proscription of Palestine Action.
Internationally known figures, including the writer Sally Rooney, climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and American scholar Judith Butler are among those who signed the declaration.
Others include British musicians Nadine Shah and Brian Eno, writers China Mieville, Lina Meruane and Tariq Ali, along with dozens of professors at leading universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Yale, Columbia and the London School of Economics.
The letter’s singular sentence has become a well-known slogan used to express support for Palestine Action, which the UK government proscribed as a “terrorist organisation” in July 2025.
That designation – which placed Palestine Action in the same category as Hezbollah and al-Qaeda – makes it illegal to be a member of or express support for the group, offences punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
In February, the UK’s High Court ruled that the government’s ban was unlawful and disproportionate, prompting London’s Metropolitan Police to say it would refrain from arresting demonstrators rallying in support of the group.
But with the government appeal pending, the Met reversed course, and officers arrested more than 500 people at a protest earlier this month.
Defend Our Juries, an activist group that has organised rallies and called for the government to drop its proscription, said in a statement accompanying Friday’s letter that the signatories were vulnerable to “terrorism charges”.
“If the police proceed to arrest these scholars on terrorism charges, the authoritarian nature of the ban will be further exposed,” the group wrote. “But if they don’t, the more than 3,000 previous arrests of people for saying precisely the same thing will be shown to be not just unlawful but arbitrary and discriminatory.”
In their own statements, several signatories expressed solidarity with Palestine Action and called on the government to halt its appeal.
The UK government is “silencing the messenger”, said Neve Gordon, an international law professor at Queen Mary University of London.
“The decision to appeal the ruling rendering the proscription unlawful is yet another sign of the government’s moral bankruptcy,” he added.
