Spurs 1-2 Newcastle: Eddie Howe savours ‘special connection’ after supporters’ response

Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa were left on the bench – just a few months after Howe spent £124m on the forwards.

That told its own story as the visitors lined up without a recognised striker for the second away league game in a row.

Anthony Gordon was instead tasked with leading the line on the road again after Howe took heart from the opening half an hour of his side’s 4-1 defeat against Liverpool.

Gordon put Newcastle in front at Anfield that night, but it was still a bold call.

However, Gordon, Elanga and Harvey Barnes aggressively led the press out of possession as they hunted down Spurs’ defenders and broke forward quickly with the ball.

There were still occasions where Newcastle were crying out for a poacher in the box to get on the end of a number of teasing crosses from Elanga.

However, the speed of Newcastle‘s front line caused Spurs problems and Gordon’s dancing feet set up Ramsey’s winner.

Remarkably, it was just travel-sick Newcastle‘s third away league victory of the season.

Newcastle have too often been soft, throwing away more points (19) than any other side in the division.

But this was an evening where they “really did inspire each other” following a difficult few days.

“If anything they used it in a positive way and reinforced relationships,” Howe added.

“It made us all look inward and look at what we’re doing and how we can do it better.”

The top four players after the group stage progress to the play-off night at London’s O2 Arena on 23 May, with first facing fourth and second against third in a best-of-19-leg match. The final, which is the best of 21 legs, follows.

If players are level on points after the 16 weeks then places are decided by nights won and then matches won.

Newcastle: More questions than answers as Eddie Howe’s men yet to catch fire this season

There have certainly been glimpses of what this team could be in recent weeks.

There was a devastating first-half display against Chelsea, a spirited hour away to Paris St-Germain and a fine opening half an hour or so at Anfield.

But games are not won in snatches.

It has been a frustration of the coaching staff that they have lacked the training time during an unrelenting run of fixtures to really work on things and piece it all together like they have during previous sticky spells.

Instead the players have come to rely on meeting rooms, analysis sessions and walk-throughs.

This is the reality of life at clubs who aspire to fight on multiple fronts, of course, but competing in four competitions was an unprecedented feat for Newcastle going into February.

The relentless nature of the schedule has had a knock-on effect on the squad – Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar are all currently sidelined, while Anthony Gordon hobbled off with a hamstring issue on Wednesday night.

It has also had an impact on the adaptation of Newcastle‘s summer signings who, aside from defender Malick Thiaw, are still finding their feet at the club.

Thiaw, Jacob Ramsey, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa all joined in the final fortnight or so of a turbulent window, in which the club operated without a sporting director and missed out on a host of top targets.

Newcastle, remarkably, are still searching for a settled combination in the final third despite spending £179m on forwards.

Elanga enjoyed a lively second-half cameo at the Etihad, but Woltemade was substituted at half-time – having failed to score since December – while the rusty Wissa missed a host of good chances in both legs.

It leaves Newcastle with more questions than answers as they embark on a crunch run of fixtures.

“Where does that leave our season?” Howe asked. “We’re still fighting on several fronts.

“The games are coming thick and fast. There’s no let-up for us. We need to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible. It’s the only thing that gives you new energy.”

I travelled home from London to Newcastle via ITALY and it was still £30 cheaper than taking the train

A CANNY businesswoman faced with a nightmare train journey from London to Newcastle costing more than £100 flew instead for £30 cheaper — via Italy.

Victoria Williams, 42, had visited friends in the capital.

But what should have been a three-hour rail trip home on Sunday was hit by engineering works.

The £110 trek from Kings Cross to Newcastle involved two changes, including a bus replacement, and would take five hours.

Victoria spotted a Ryanair flight from Stansted to Milan, and then Milan to Newcastle, for a total of just £74 — despite travelling 1,400 miles instead of 240.

She took off at 2pm and arrived at Milan Bergamo two-and-a-half hours later.

After some duty free shopping, she caught her return flight and landed at Newcastle at 8.10pm.

Mum-of-one Victoria said: “It’s ridiculous and shows the country is creaking at the seams.

“The Government needs to sort this out as London to Newcastle is a major route, connecting businesses and communities.

“Sunday is a major day of travel with people returning home to work after a weekend away.

“The situation is terrible for the economy and for people simply going about their everyday lives.”

“I was shocked when I saw how expensive the train was.

“My heart sank at the prospect of paying that much with the hassle of two changes with a replacement bus.

“I went on Skyscanner but direct flights to Newcastle were hundreds of pounds.

“I kept looking and finally found one via Milan for just £74.

“I felt guilty about the environmental aspect and embarrassed to tell my friends how I was getting home, but it seemed like the best option.

“I had a great time. I got gifts for my little boy in Italy, duty free cigarettes for my partner’s mum and had some lovely food.

“I waited for the connection in a warm, comfortable airport, with multiple shops and restaurants, rather than shivering on a freezing platform.

“I was able to sit quietly while charging my devices, and all in all had a very comfortable, relaxing time.

“I don’t regret it at all but it’s absolutely mad that flying from London to Newcastle via Milan can be cheaper and easier than getting the train.”

Anfield was silenced as Anthony Gordon looked to the Kop and defiantly pointed to his ear.

The Newcastle United forward had just fired his side in front against Liverpool with a well-taken 36th-minute finish.

There was plenty of time left.

But were Liverpool about to finally lose a top-flight fixture against the visitors on their own turf for the first time since 1994?

Was the champions’ winless run in the Premier League about to extend to six games?

Not if Hugo Ekitike had anything to do with it.

The France forward dragged his side level with a poacher’s finish – then fired them in front with a quick-fire second before half-time, much to the delight of manager Arne Slot.

“The fans love him,” Slot said after his side’s 4-1 win. “From the start, everyone could see how special he is, how fast he is.”

These were the sort of finishes Newcastle‘s scouting team had seen plenty of, having tried to sign Ekitike, 23, on three separate occasions – including last summer.

Even head coach Eddie Howe could not help but hold his hands up.

“Sometimes you have to acknowledge the player against you while also acknowledging we could have defended better,” he said.

“Ekitike is an outstanding player and you saw that today. He’s got a little bit of everything and that’s his biggest strength. He’s tall, quick and he can finish.”

Champions League play-offs: Newcastle to face Qarabag, Real Madrid to face Benfica

Newcastle will play Qarabag in a two-legged play-off to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Magpies drew 1-1 with defending champions Paris St-Germain on Wednesday in the league phase to seal 12th place.

PSG, who finished 11th, will face Monaco while 15-time European champions Real Madrid will meet former manager Jose Mourinho’s Benfica.

The first legs of the play-offs will take place on 17-18 February, with the second legs one week later.

The Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary will hosts the 2025-26 final on 30 May.

Beloved ferry link that connected UK to Europe could return after 18 years

A popular ferry service that linked the UK with Norway was withdrawn in 2008, but it could return, as there have been calls to restore the route that connects the twin cities

There have been calls to restore the popular DFDS ferry service linking the UK to the Norwegian city of Bergen, 18 years after it was discontinued.

The beloved DFDS ferry linking Tyneside to the Scandinavian port ceased operations in 2008. However, the upcoming launch of new direct flights from Newcastle to Bergen this year has reignited demands for the maritime connection to be revived as well.

The two cities have maintained their twin status since 1968, with Bergen previously sending Newcastle an annual Christmas tree for decades as a symbol of their bond, though this custom has since ceased due to environmental considerations. While operators consider restoring the ferry service financially unviable, Newcastle City Council leader Karen Kilgour informed colleagues on Wednesday that enthusiasm for reinstating the route persists.

The Labour councillor revealed to a full council session that she anticipated the Jet2 flights commencing this April would “prove popular enough to allow the company to offer year-long flight options connecting our two great cities”.

Coun Kilgour continued: “Not only will this assist our economic links through strategic sectors in offshore energy but also allow tourists to take advantage of city breaks. We would also love to see the return of the ferry, which stopped running in 2008. We know lots of people in both cities have fond memories of travelling by sea to visit both Newcastle and Bergen, reports Chronicle Live.

“And while at this point operators consider the route is not economically viable, we will continue to work with partners and our friends in Bergen to explore all ways of bringing it back. Bergen remains a strategic partner in our international work and we intend not only to maintain but to deepen that relationship in the months ahead.”

The possibility of reinstating a ferry service is believed to have been hampered by the requirement to construct an expanded passport control facility at Bergen’s port should operations resume.

Lib Dem councillor Greg Stone, who has consistently championed the ferry’s return on a historic route stretching back to 1890, commented: “Warm words are one thing, but we need to make it a reality. I know there are costs involved in doing that but I hope the council will continue that work, redouble that work, and work potentially with the mayor [Kim McGuinness] to look at what we can do to restore the physical ferry link.”

Travellers are delighted at the prospect of the ferry route returning, as one shared on Facebook: “That would be great, I would be on that like a flash.” A second commented: “An absolute necessity to get this route back again. Bergen/Stavanger – Newcastle.”

A third wrote: “Out of all the routes lost the return of the Bergen route would be the most successful. Bergen is a great place to visit and is also the gateway to the rest of Norway.” Reminiscing another shared: “It used to go to Hamburg as well and I went there on DFDS with my nana and grandad to visit family when I was a kid.”

One more shared: “I so hope so. Pity it may not go to Haugesund and Stavanger, but I can take Bergen. It would be amazing to have the ship back again, so we can connect again with beautiful Norway. My homeland, on my father’s side.”
