Japanese islands shaken by earthquake after more than 1,000 tremors

July 3 (UPI) — An island chain in southwest Japan was shaken by an earthquake on Thursday after over 1,000 tremors throughout two weeks.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Tokara island chain at about 4:13 p.m. with a magnitude as high as 7 recorded on Akuseki Island.

All 76 people on Akuseki Island were confirmed safe, no tsunami warning was issued and there were no reports of injury or property damage.

The residents have found shelter at a school after an evacuation order was issued, and the village is considering evacuating from the island.

The island chain has experienced heightened seismic activity since June 21 as local media described the wave of quakes as unusual.

“It’s very scary to even fall asleep,” one resident said. “It feels like it’s always shaking.”

“You can hear a strange roar from the ocean before the quakes hit, especially at night. It’s eerie,” Chizuko Arikawa from Akusekijima island told The Asahi Shimbun.

Some residents have been sleep-deprived and tired as they asked media to “be considerate and not make excessive inquiries or interviews,” according to a notice on the village website

The country is on the edge of its seat with this series of tremors by rumors that a deadly earthquake could be coming soon.

Japan is prone to be one of the most seismically active nations, with about 1,500 earthquakes each year.

Love Island’s Alima breaks silence on future with Remell after shock villa exit

Love Island’s Alima Gagigo has broken her silence after she was brutally dumped from the villa in a shock twist that no one saw coming – leaving fans fuming

Alima Gagigo has broken her silence after her shock dumping during tonight’s Love Island. Fans were left furious when the 23-year-old was dumped from the villa along with new bombshell Ryan.

The shock exit came as Alima’s partner Conor chose to recouple with Billykiss, leaving Alima single. New bombshell Ryan, who had only entered the villa yesterday, was also dumped from the villa, after none of the girls chose to recouple with him.

During her time in the villa, Alima formed a connection with Remell, however it came crashing down when she learnt he had shared a number of kisses with Poppy in the sleepover. Upon her exit, Alima has spoken out about where she stands with Remell on the outside, and all things villa life.

“Remell and I were getting stronger and stronger by the day,” she said of their relationship. When he got the text about the sleepover, I was with him, and as soon as he started smiling.

“I knew this guy, he wasn’t going to be up to any good. When I saw the clip, from that moment on, I knew it would take a lot for us to go back to how we were before. I wasn’t surprised by his behaviour at all.”

When asked whether she’d be open to have a conversation with Remell after leaving the villa, Alima said: “I don’t hate him and I’m more than happy to be civil, he was part of my experience after all! But in terms of anything romantic, I’ll keep myself away from that.”

After Remell’s departure, Alima found a connection with Ben, but her time was cut short before they could really give it a go. However, Alima’s departure doesn’t mean the end of the road for the couple.

“I want to see how he acts now that I’m not there and if he finds a connection. If he comes back single, I would be interested in seeing if there’s something we could continue…” she teased.

Now she’s been dumped, Alima says she’s rooting for Dejon and Meg to take it home. The pair have been through a number of challenges since coupling up on Day 1, and it looks like Billykiss could cause yet another hurdle in their relationship.

However, Alima doesn’t think she’ll stand in the way. “I think at the start he was acting up a bit, but as the weeks go by, you can really tell he cares when he says ‘my Meg’,” she said when asked who she was rooting for.

“Also Emily and Tommy, because Tommy is the nicest man I’ve ever met in my life. Every time I walk by him in the garden or kitchen I say Tommy they don’t make men like you any more! He’s been crafted out of the sixties. You can tell he’s been raised very well, so praise to his parents!”

Love Island’s Remell defends actions following dumping after cheating accusations

Love Island’s Remell, who was voted out as the least favourite boy, has defended his actions and said things might be different if he and Alima ‘set boundaries’

Love Island’s Remell has hit back at cheating claims as he defended his decision to stick with Alima after he spent a few days away at ‘The Sleepover’. The latest episode saw the viewers vote for their favourite boy and favourite girl, with the two islanders with the fewest votes getting dumped from the villa.

Remell said that he wasn’t surprised that he was chosen to leave and admitted to taking a ‘risk’. Opening up about his connections, he said: “Despite me having what seemed to be a good connection with Poppy, my heart was telling me that I had to see it through with Alima.

“The dynamic with Poppy was more what I’m used to on the outside. But building up slowly with Alima made me realise that that’s important.”

Remell continued and said that while he “didn’t necessarily have to share the bed and kiss outside of the Truth or Dare game”, he acted how he would have done on the outside and was “being true” to himself.

Defending his actions, he said: “There was never a conversation with Alima about being exclusive, we hadn’t had that chat and hadn’t spoken properly about boundaries either.”

Alima was not pleased with Remell’s actions while he was away and called it off straight away. Reflecting on the experience, he said: “As soon as I came back from The Sleepover, I was ready to speak from the heart. But when I realised that she was hurt, I learned that it was a lot deeper than I originally thought.”

He added: “If Alima and I had had a conversation about boundaries, it would have made a difference. Communication is important and I’d do my best to change.”

Remell said they didn’t leave things on the best of terms, but that he would be open to having “conversations”. He said: “Things were left a bit sour. The reality is, the woman that was opening my heart and turning me into a lover boy is never going to truly know how I feel about her.

“I was ready to tell her everything once I came back to the Villa, but because the conversation didn’t end well, we didn’t get to properly talk. We’re both stubborn so it was hard to see eye to eye.

“I would be open to a conversation, but if she’s not open to it then it’s fine. It was hard for us to talk in the Villa because I felt a bit disrespected and put my guard up.”

Elsewhere in the latest episode, Megan was voted as the least favourite girl and was sent packing despite getting to know Conor.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX

Why Love Island’s Helena holding out for Harry will RUIN her career – and what he told me that proves he’ll never change

IT is a scenario we’ve all witnessed – or perhaps even lived through ourselves.

Boy meets girl. Boy cheats on girl. Girl tells friends they’re definitely over. Girl secretly thinks she can change boy. Girl takes boy back. Boy doesn’t change.

You can change the genders whichever way around, but regardless, we’re about half way through this storyline so far with Love Island‘s Helena and Harry.

The couple were over before they began because of the footballer’s wandering eye, with Helena moaning about being made to look like a mug.

She appeared to have conveniently forgotten however, about running to the Hideaway with Harry while he was coupled up with Shakirajust 56 hours after meeting.

Despite an intimate night in the boudoir, Harry then snogged saucy sexpot Yasmin behind Helena’s back before ending up back with Shakira again.

Through tears last night, Harry admitted to having regrets about ‘cheating’ on Helena, who has barely been able to look at him since.

But before Helena could take him back, she was whisked away for a sleepover with bombshell Giorgio.

He’s not the air stewardesses’ usual type, but he’s the perfect distraction to stop Helena reuniting with Harry.

I have no doubt Helena will end up back with Harry in a storyline set to rumble on this series, but I’m here to warn her that holding out for him will RUIN her career.

Aside from her obvious similarities to Love Island legend Olivia Attwood, Helena’s got the potential to be a stand-out star of the series thanks to her hilarious wit and bombshell beauty.

She had the villa in hysterics when, during a game of Spin the Bottle, she dared ex Harry “to go home”.

Love Island’s Harry breaks down in tears over Helena as he sobs ‘she can’t even be around me’

But if she doesn’t stick to her guns and stay far away from Harry, she’s going to come across more like pushover Chloe Burrows who kept going back for Toby Aromolaran than brave Liberty Poole who dumped Jake Cornish and left the villa on her own accord.

By proving she knows her worth and can resist Harry’s temptation, Helena will secure herself an army of female fans they can look up to.

She’ll be able to capitalise on this by landing lucrative deals with empowering female brands instead of facing heartbreak once they’re out the villa when Harry inevitably cheats.

I say this because a leopard never changes its spots – and if he’s already untrustworthy while living 24/7 under the same roof, then I don’t hold out much hope.

My assumption is also based on what Harry told me before going into Love Island.

While the 30-year-old was in isolation days before the series launch, Harry’s ex said he dumped her for Love Island – despite claiming he was going to Bali for the summer.

When I confronted him about this, Harry played Mr Innocent.

“Oh that sounds so terrible, wow,” he exclaimed.

“No, we were casually dating and I told her I was going away for the summer and we left it there. I didn’t ‘dump’ anyone.”

In fact, Harry went on to rubbish the idea he was as much of a “player” in dating as he was on the pitch.

“I think that is the reputation footballers get, but I can only be myself and that’s not who I am,” Harry insisted to me.

“I’m not a player.

“I’m 30. I’ve got a mullet. I’m ready for something serious.”

As he said this, with a twinkle in his eye and dimple in his smile, it was difficult not to fall for Harry’s charm.

But Helena needs to be strong and resist – or face being played by a player who has no intention of settling down.

Spanish island’s bold message to Brits as party town gets £4.28m overhaul

One of Spain’s most infamous party regions is distancing itself from rowdy Brits through a series of brutal clampdowns, and a multi-million pound regeneration that has just completed its first phase

A popular Spanish resort appears to be ditching its boozy reputation thanks to a major transformation.

For years, Majorca’s infamous town of Magaluf has become synonymous with rowdy, drunken Brits, cheap alcohol, and blaring nightclubs. The Magaluf Strip, officially known as Calle Punta Ballena, was the place for Stag and Hen Dos, as well as those wanting to get so drunk they’d forget all about the ‘I HEART SPAIN’ tattoo they had inked on their bum cheek the night before.

However, as anti-tourist sentiment gains momentum across Spain and the Balearics – it seems Magaluf’s party-mad status is about to change. The town has already cracked down on binge-drinking and anti-social behaviour through a series of brutal rules. This includes all-inclusive resorts capping alcoholic beverages to just six a day, while bar crawls and public drinking are both prohibited.

The clamp-down has slowly altered Magaluf’s questionable image, paving the way for a fresh start. This has recently been epitomised by a huge promenade refurbishment that was inaugurated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony last weekend (Sunday, June 22).

The promenade, which is now called Paseo Marítimo having been renamed after the founder of Meliá Hotels International, Gabriel Escarrer Julià, has undergone a ‘complete rearrangement and beautification’ with all of its infrastructure and services being ‘renewed’. This includes new lighting, sewage systems, street furniture, and an irrigation network.

As previously reported, 650 metres of the promenade has been revamped in the initial phase, starting at the corner of the famous Nikki Beach and extending to Pirates Square. The work also includes the introduction of artificial sand dunes and palm trees grouped to form a ‘small oasis area’.

According to Daily Majorca Bulletin, the refurb has been funded thanks to a €4 million grant from the EU Next Generation funds as well as €1 million of tourist tax revenue (equating to around £4.28 million). It is believed the second phase, which is also being partly funded by tourist taxes, will commence later this year – as early as November.

Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual, who attended the inaugural event, is said to have highlighted the ‘importance’ of the work that has been completed, arguing it is a further landmark in the ‘transformation of Magaluf’ which aims to bring about a ‘change in image’. While the impact of British tourists wasn’t explicitly mentioned, it’s clear the town is trying to distance itself from its party-mad past.

To mark the work being complete, the town hall is believed to have organised a ‘special day of events’. This includes a Gastro Fair, beach sport games, and a folk dance, reports local media.

You can fly to Majorca for as little as £28 in July(Image: Steve and Anita in Mallorca/Youtube)

Brits keen to check out Magaluf’s new and improved image can fly directly from a slew of major UK airports, including London, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow and Belfast. If you’re flexible with dates, you can grab return fares for as little as £28 in July.

Accommodation in Magaluf is equally affordable, home to a slew of no-thrills apartments, hostels, and cheap hotels. For example, a week’s stay (July 21-28) at the three-star HSM Don Juan will set you back £1,161. This is based on two people sharing.

However, if you want a more luxurious week away in the sun, check out Sol Barbados. This beachfront hotel boasts its very own waterpark and outdoor pool, as well as kids’ entertainment, modern rooms, and a 24-hour front desk. Staying here on the exact same dates costs £2,402.

Love Island’s Harry breaks down in tears admitting ‘things will never be the same’

Love Island’s Harry Cooksley was overcome with emotion during a chat with Dejon as he reflected on his antics in the villa following his steamy kiss with Yasmin Pettet

Love Island star Harry Cooksley burst into tears during a conversation with Dejon. The gold trader and semi-professional footballer was dealt a huge blow after his actions caused upset in the villa.

Harry, 30, was dumped by Helena Ford, 29, when it came to light that he’d kissed Yasmin Pettet. However, things became even more tricky when it emerged that he’d not only kissed her once, but went in for three kisses, leaving Helena in fits of rage after Harry attempted to lie about his kisses.

Helena fumed she was “done” with Harry after he’d embarrassed her, but he was quick to attempt to defend his actions, replying: “We both said we were open to exploring new connections.” Helena later flipped out, saying that their agreement wasn’t to include going to the Hideaway and “necking” someone three times.

But it appears that Harry’s actions have caught up with him, and while they weren’t documented on the main show, Love Island: Aftersun revealed his emotional conversation. Dejon said: “If I could have it my way, you and Helena would be together. You two get along, you two, I can clearly see there’s a connection between you two.

“What matters is what you want, innit?” Responding, Harry said: “Yeah, we just have, like, nothing, do you know what I mean?” as he wiped away tears. He added: “Where it’s just like, we were good and then it’s just like, she just can’t even be around me. It’s just weird, man.

He admitted things would never be the same again

“Like I’ll never be the same now after the way I’ve acted, do you know what I mean?” Their dramatic split sent the villa into chaos with Harry attempting to pursue a third female co-star just hours later. Fans have since reacted to the Aftersun clip which was also shared on social media.

“Helena probably would go back to him I think, I just think she likes him too much,” said one. A second went on to add: “Oh look, it’s the consequences of his own actions!” Meanwhile, a third typed: “What does he expect after his behaviour. I would never give him another chance!”

“Crocodile tears. You knew what you were doing and you didn’t care. Next!” fumed another. But it’s not just viewers who Harry has angered. His mum appeared on the spinoff and joked that she had made the decision to disown him multiple times due to his actions in the Majorcan villa.

Host Maya Jama commented: “Imagine he’s just living his normal life, talking to the boys, you forget you’ve got cameras on you.” But when asked if she approves of his actions in the villa, his mum hit back saying: “No! I’ve disowned him. On more than one occasion. Harry who? Harry who?

“Oh my God, it just rolls off his tongue, I don’t know. How can you forget the camera’s on you?” Prior to jetting out to the villa, Harry revealed he had warned his mum that he hadn’t ruled out having sex in the villa if the connection was there.

“It’s not out of the question [that I’ll have sex on TV],” he said, adding: “If it feels right, then I will – and I have briefed my mum as well. So yeah, if it feels right and it’s the right time,e I’m definitely open to it.”

Love Island’s Malin Andersson demands show is axed after being ‘treated like trash’

EXCLUSIVE: Love Island’s Malin Andersson, who starred in the second season of the ITV2 dating show in 2016, has slammed the series as ‘toxic’ and said it should be taken off air

Malin

Former Love Island star Malin Andersson, who shot to fame on series two, has radically changed her opinion of the hit dating show, branding it “full of toxicity” and insisting it should be axed.

While other participants, including Amy Hart and Amber Davies, have praised the show for its support and aftercare – with Olivia Attwood saying “ Love Island saved me”– Malin, who took part in the show in 2016, has a very different view.

Here, the 32-year-old, who memorably confronted ex Terry Walsh in the villa, tells new why she feels so strongly about her time on Love Island and why she would be dead against her daughter Xaya, three, going on the show when she’s older.

Malin
Malin starred on Love Island in 2016(Image: PA)

Hi, Malin! Love Island’s back but you’re not watching. Why?

I haven’t watched any of them. It should be axed. When I was on it, we were naive, it felt more organic – still scripted but more authentic. Even then, it wasn’t pure, it was full of toxicity. Now millions watch it, especially young people, and their idea of love gets completely skewed.

Some contestants spiral completely. Did you ever feel like that on the show? Oh, 100%. I felt disposable, like a piece of rubbish tossed aside. In there, you’re fighting to be seen, to be a main character, seeking validation. It’s not healthy – it creates unrealistic drama and messes up how viewers see love. The whole thing is toxic and should go in the bin. Let’s talk about the time when you came back in to confront Terry. How did that happen? I was already partying in Spain when Emma [Jane Woodhams] went in with the TOWIE lot. They realised I was nearby and asked me to come in too. So I did the next day. Were you watching the show then?

No. I was just partying and Tweeting stuff to provoke producers to get me back in – and it worked.

How did you feel after confronting Terry? Did it bring clarity? No, it just showed me that I had been attracting terrible men my whole life until I figured out why.

Terry and Malin
She coupled up with Terry Walsh whilst in the villa(Image: Internet Unknown)

How did you heal? It’s been a powerful journey but not easy. I had to look at parts of myself I didn’t want to see – why I wanted to be seen, why I accepted bad love. It starts with what we’re shown as kids. TV shows like Love Island feed the same toxic ideas. They don’t care about feelings – just money and drama. I wish there were shows about real healing. Why do you think people love watching the show? People are living through other people’s lives because they want escapism. We’re all scrolling, looking at everyone else’s stories, wanting to be part of it. The format is easy: pretty girls, good-looking guys who can’t even talk properly. It’s a quick dopamine hit. This year they say they will show sex on screen if it happens, to show “real relationships”. What are your thoughts? They’re struggling for viewers, that’s all. It’s not real – living in a house with people with no phone or sanity, isn’t real. When you were there, did producers suggest you talk to certain people or stir things? All the time. If people were gossiping about me, they’d tell me to go over. They’d nudge conversations or set up who should talk to whom. It’s all manipulated for reactions. So why did you decide to go on the show in the first place? I’d been on Take Me Out at 18. The same producer called me a year later, asked if I was single. I said yes, and they fast-tracked me in, I didn’t even audition. I was just a young girl wanting fun – clueless, really. This year on Love Island there are older contestants – 30 and 29. The youngest is 22. How does that dynamic work? The older ones get seen as Mummy and Daddy, that’s how society is. I’m 32 and people act like that’s ancient. The show pushes a narrow look – perfect bodies, the “ideal” appearance. Anything outside that is labelled abnormal. It tells kids they have to fit that mould.

Malin and Xaya
Malin is now a mother to daughter, Xaya

How about diversity? There are more people from different backgrounds on the show… It’s sad we even have to call it “diverse”. We should just be one mix of people – different races, professions, appearances. We’re all the same inside. Are you looking for love now? I feel he’s around the corner! I want someone with a pure soul and real masculine energy – not ego-driven but someone who makes me feel safe. I’m not really dating right now. Will you tell your daughter about your time on the show? She’ll find out eventually. She sees how I live and grow, and that’s why I feel so strongly about all this – to protect her too. If she ever wanted to go on Love Island, what would you say? Nah, babes. I’d tell her no way – with no reason given.

Indonesia on high alert after volcano erupts in Lesser Sunda Islands

June 18 (UPI) — Indonesia’s Lewotobi active Laki Lai volcano spewed searing miles-high ash column into the skies over Flores island, 440 miles east of Bali, grounding flights serving the popular tourist island all across the region

The Geology Agency said the 5,197-foot volcano erupted at 5.35 p.m. local time, sending a cloud of hot ash and gases 6.8 miles above the island that is famous for its Komodo dragons and marine life and is a popular dive location.

Tourists were urged not to travel to Flores after the central government in Jakarta placed the country on its highest alert level, with residents of two villages inside a 5-mile exclusion zone around the crater of the twin volcano evacuated from their homes.

The island’s Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport was closed until Thursday at the earliest.

Flights remained on the ground at Bali’s Denpasar International Airport, including for domestic and regional routes as well as internationally, as far afield as India and China and Australia and New Zealand.

Budget carriers Jetstar and Scoot cancelled flights to Bali scheduled to depart Singapore’s Changi Airport while AirAsia canceled at least one of its three daily flights to Jakarta.

Bali’s Come2Indonesia travel operator told CNN the cancellations would impact more than 1,000 of its customers booked on trips to Bali and Komodo National Park, where Flores is located.

Laki Laki, the male of the two peaks, which is highly active — and deadly — had been showing signs that an eruption was imminent in recent days with many as 25 rumblings an hour, compared with an average of 8 to 10 a day normally.

A series of eruptions in November killed nine people after molten rock bombs landed on villages with more than 10,000 people forced to leave the area and caused serious travel disruption.

Stunning UK islands where locals begged to be evacuated faces new threat

A remote archipelago situated some 110 miles off the UK mainland was once home to a skilful community that lived off the land. However, 94 years ago – all residents asked to be evacuated, except one

A breath-taking UK archipelago stranded in the North Atlantic Ocean is under threat – almost 100 years after it was abandoned by humans.

Situated some 110 miles off the west coast of mainland Scotland, forming part of the Outer Hebrides, lies the ‘rare beauty and drama’ of St Kilda. Often touted as the ‘islands at the edge of the world’ due to its remote location, the archipelago consists of five unique islands: Hirta, Dùn, Soay, Boreray and Levenish, alongside a number of towering sea stacks and islets.

For around 4,000 years, the cluster was home to a community that lived off the land – isolated from the rest of the world but described as ‘much happier than the generality of mankind’. Due to the treacherous waters, fishing on the island wasn’t very feasible.

Instead, islanders survived on the ‘dense colonies’ of gannets, fulmars, and puffins – catching them for good, oil, feathers, and bones. However, over time, life became much harder on the island – and the population started to decline.

It is believed the islands’ contact with the outside world started to increase in the 19th and 20th centuries, tempting younger locals to immigrate to the likes of Australia and Canada for a better life. This, combined with bouts of disease that wiped out many residents, meant few able-bodied people remained on the island.

Towards the end of the 1920s, the crops failed several times – meaning many islanders faced starving to death during the upcoming barren winter. However, on August 29, 1930, the last 36 residents voluntarily evacuated the island – hopping on board a ship that would sail them away to their new homes.

According to the BBC, the only person who opposed the evacuation was Neil Ferguson, who lived at number five. “He was the only one to dig his croft ready for planting for a summer harvest, and was the last to leave his house, delaying for as long as he could the boat that would take them away,” the publication states.

After the island was abandoned, it took on a new breath of life – becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a haven for almost one million seabirds, including the UK’s largest colony of Atlantic puffins. Now run by the National Trust for Scotland, the archipelago is a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

“If you do explore the islands directly, you’ll have a rare experience of walking through a landscape abandoned by the entire community in 1930,” hailed Visit Scotland. “You’ll also visit preserved archaeological sites and relics, which reveal the close relationship the islanders had with their unique natural environment, and how they adapted to outside influences. You can see this up close in the remnants of houses, enclosures and cleits – drystone storage structures – remnants of World War I guns and communications.”

While many of the seabirds were hunted for food, they’ve been able to live a more peaceful life since residents were evacuated. However, they now face a much greater threat: climate change.

With rising sea temperatures, warm waters mean food sources the seabirds rely on – like eels and plankton – are shifting north, meaning they’re too far away for many seabirds to fly to. As a result, the colonies are dying out, with the Atlantic puffin ‘creeping dangerously near to the endangered list’.

“Seabirds are part of life on St Kilda” says Susan Bain, Property Manager of St Kilda. “They’re bound up in its archaeology and history, and with them, that’s disappearing. If it were a building, or a monument under threat, we wouldn’t let that happen. The loss of the seabirds will have impacts that we don’t even know until they take place – they are pieces of a unique and fragile ecosystem.”

Love Island’s Meg and Malisha in furious clash as tensions reach new heights in villa

Love Island star Meg has found herself embroiled in a bitter feud with Malisha after the bombshell from Broxbourne waltzed into the villa on Friday with her eyes firmly set on Meg’s man

The drama is set to continue in the Love Island villa tonight as things get heated again between Meg and Malisha in the garden and as Alima comforts Malisha in the dressing room.

After hearing her side, Alima has some thoughts on the situation, heading out to the kitchen to tell Meg and the group: “I’m not gonna lie, that wasn’t nice to see both of you, all the shouting…let’s be nice to people.” Meg then says: “I said [to Malisha] I don’t want you to feel like this, you’re now mugging me off and being disrespectful – I don’t want to argue with her.”

Sharing her thoughts on the situation, Shakira adds: “I don’t think she [Malisha] was being disrespectful going to the Hideaway.” To which Meg hits back: “That’s your opinion, not mine.”

Meanwhile that evening, Toni and Conor debrief about where they stand and more importantly where he stands with new bombshell Emily. Toni tells him: “I think you know I have eyes for you, out of the three girls that came in last night, she’s [Emily] obviously a sweetheart. I think her and I are very different. Are you looking for a sweet, mild girl or someone like me?”

The next day, Meg is keen to bury the hatchet and pulls Malisha for another chat. Meg says: “Third time lucky, we’re gonna get it right this time…”

It comes as Love Island viewers believe they have rumbled Meg’s game plan amid the high tensions in the villa. Things have been heating up in the Love Island villa thanks to the arrival of the three bombshells on Friday night.

The three bombshells include 24-year-old teaching assistant Malisha from Broxbourne, Commercial Banking Executive Yasmin, 24, and Insurance Development Executive Emily, 24, from Aberdeen.

The boys left the villa earlier in the day for drinks, but what they didn’t know was that the girls would be watching their every move on a giant TV back in the main villa. Meg particularly struggled watching the boys chat to the girls, with her even being branded “mean”.

She hit out at the bombshells and threw insults at them, including going as far as calling one of them a “b***h.” Her behaviour didn’t go unnoticed by fans at home as they believed they cracked why she was acting in that way.

One fan shared: “Meg doesn’t fancy him, she’s just worried about her place in the villa.” Another added: “Meg cannot convince me that she is into Dejon. He is just an easy option at the moment.”

Meg

“Like Meg your doing all this huffing and puffing for a guy you probably don’t even really like,” shared another. Someone else quipped: “meg isn’t acting like this because she likes dejon SOOO much btw, she doesn’t wanna get embarrassed and she doesn’t wanna get dumped, i know her game.”

Shortly after they all established where they stood in their relationship, three new bombshells entered and caused a stir for the girls watching.

They then headed off on one-on-one dates with three of the boys as the original girls watched on. Tensions rose once again when they boys and the bombshells returned to the villa where they discovered they had been watched the whole time.

And it looks like tensions are only going to continue to grow in the villa from here on out….

Tourists from huge European country flood Canary Islands and it’s not just Brits

The Canary Island set a new benchmark for international tourism, despite ongoing anti-tourist protests – and holidaymakers from one EU country in particular make up the largest tourist segment

The Canary Islands are still a major holiday hotspot for Europeans despite cries of overcrowding from locals.

According to Spanish publication Canarian Weekly, more than 4.36 million foreign visitors descended on the islands in the first quarter of this year alone – with holidaymakers from one EU country making up the largest segment.

And it appears German tourists cannot seem to get enough of the archipelago’s sunshine and beaches. Euronews reported that Spain remains the top holiday destination for Germans in 2025, with the Canary Islands leading the way with year-round sun.

The Canaries offer an unusually stable subtropical climate, with daytime temperatures rarely falling below 20C even in January. Gran Canaria is often touted as the hottest, retaining such heat due to its proximity to Northern Africa.

Like Britain, Germans endure cold and snowy conditions from the months of December through to February. Another strong appeal for German travellers is likely the home comforts that can still be enjoyed in places like Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The undeniable abundance of German tourists over the years mean that popular destinations have adapted to offer German-language menus and Bavarian staples. Direct flights from cities like Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin also make travel relatively simple.

Regular departures to the Canaries from Germany also enable spontaneous and cost-effective travel. A flight from Dusseldorf to Lanzarote takes around four hours and 30 minutes, a similar time-scale to planes departing from London.

Germans also have a notorious love of the outdoors and hiking that also makes the Canary Islands particularly appealing. The archipelago is packed with coastal walks and hiking trails, and the laidback lifestyle is ideal for recuperating.

It is certainly no surprise why Germans, Brits and all international travellers return again and again to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. However, the frustration of locals and increasing pressure on the housing market exacerbated by expats and tourists is only mounting.

Ivan Cerdena Molina, an activist within the protest movement and a member of local environmental group ATAN, voiced his frustration that despite the protests, more tourists visited his homeland last year than the year before.

“We had 16 million tourists [in the Canaries] in 2023 and 18 million in 2024. In 2025, the number is increasing again. The government didn’t do anything; it just spoke nice words with no real action.”, reports the Express .

Local governments are also implementing taxes to manage tourism. British holidaymakers heading to the Canary Island of Fuerteventura will soon have to pay a tourist tax. The island’s government has confirmed it will introduce the charge for the wild beach of Cofete, the sand dunes of Correlejo and the sea caves of Ajuy.

The move will follow the example of Tenerife, which has already started charging visitors to the mountain-top village of Masca and intends to do the same with Mount Teide.

Love Island’s Harry Cooksley ‘facing exit’ as fans shocked by ‘wild’ comment to co-star

Love Island 2025 contestant Harry Cooksley got on the bad side of viewers this week on the ITV2 series, so much so several fans wanted him to leave the villa after his latest actions

One Love Island star could be set for a looming exit from the villa if fans have their way.

Harry Cooksley faces calls to be dumped from the show after his “player” actions during the latest episode. Not only did he lie to current partner Shakira about a televised moment, but a “naughty” comment he made to Helena was also picked up on.

Earlier in the episode, Harry snuck off with Helena to the Hideaway and they joked about heading back there in secret when everyone was asleep. Harry ended up telling Shakira all about his flirting with their co-star, but he didn’t exactly admit to all that went on.

Then when it came to a game of dares, Harry gave Helena a lap dance. It’s what he said during this and then did after that sparked annoyance with fans, but also Shakira.

Harry was heard whispering the word “Hideaway” into Helena’s ear, while Shakira was sat right there. She watched them awkwardly as he made the remark, clearly hoping to head to the private room later.

Then as the ‘dance’ came to an end, he sat down and put his hand on Shakira’s leg, as well as Helena’s leg. When Shakira learned about this she wasn’t happy and called him out.

He denied the recorded moment had happened before asking Helena about it. He’d also made it seem as though Helena was doing all the flirting.

Viewers tuning in were left infuriated with many calling for Harry to leave the show. Others spoke about his “wild” comment to Helena while Shakira was in earshot.

One fan posted on X: “Is nobody going to talk about how Harry literally lied to Shakira’s face, saying Helena stuck it on him when he did the exact same. And whispering ‘hideaway’ to Helena in the game. GET HIM OUTTT!!”

Another fan agreed: “Get Harry out my villa.” A third viewer posted: “I just need all the men out of the villa right now,” as a fourth fan posted: “I need Harry, Helena, Ben, Blu and Meg all dumped.”

Other viewers commented on the comment, with one saying: “Harry whispering ‘Hideaway’ in front of Shakira was wild and so weird,” as another said: “He did NOT just whisper hideaway to Helena when Shakira’s right next to them.” A further comment read: “WoooooW whispering hideaway is naughty.”

It comes as viewers confessed they think they already know which former Love Island star is set to enter the famous second villa, Casa Amor. Sophie Lee was axed from the show on Tuesday night in a brutal dumping, after her partner Harry was stolen by Shakira. Sophie’s exit left fans stunned with many gutted to see her go so early on.

But some viewers are now convinced her time on the show isn’t over. With a recent series seeing a dumped girl return to the villa for Casa Amor, viewers are now speculating Sophie will be back on the show in a matter of weeks, as a bombshell in the second villa.

Taking to X, fans guessed the twist would happen with one fan writing: “I reckon Sophie will re-enter the villa as a bombshell by the end of next week at the latest or she will re-enter in Casa Amor.” Another said: “Dw Sophie you’ll be back in 4 weeks for Casa Amor.”

A third viewer begged: “Nah bring Sophie back for Casa Amor she deserves a chance.” A fourth fan agreed: “Bring her back for casa amor!!” as a fifth viewer posted: “Gutted for her and bring back Sophie as a bombshell or Casa Amor.”

The comments kept on coming with one reading: “They better bring Sophie back as a Casa bombshell. Justice for Sophie.” Another said: “BRING SOPHIE BACK FOR CASA AMOR!”

UN panel urges UK to renegotiate Chagos Islands deal

A UN panel has urged the UK to renegotiate a deal returning the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, saying it “fails to guarantee” the rights of the Chagossian people.

The deal, signed last month, returned sovereignty of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius, but the UK retained the right to run a military base on Diego Garcia, the largest of the Chagos Islands.

By preventing the Chagossian people from returning to Diego Garcia, “the agreement appears to be at variance with the Chagossians’ right to return,” the UN experts wrote.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said the UK-Mauritius deal had been “welcomed by international organisations including the UN secretary general”.

The panel of four experts were appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, but are not UN staff and are independent from the UN.

They said by the UK keeping the military base of Diego Garcia, the Chagossian people were hindered from being able to “exercise their cultural rights in accessing their ancestral lands from which they were expelled”.

The panel called for the current deal to be suspended and for a new agreement to be negotiated.

Under the agreement, the UK would pay an average of £101m a year for 99 years to continue operating the military base on Diego Garcia, in concert with the US.

The Chagos Islands are located in the Indian Ocean about 5,799 miles (9,332km) south-east of the UK, and about 1,250 miles north-east of Mauritius.

The UK purchased the islands for £3m in 1968, but Mauritius has argued it was illegally forced to give away the islands in order to gain independence from Britain.

Diego Garcia was then cleared to make way for a military base, with large groups of Chagossians forcibly moved to Mauritius and the Seychelles, or taking up an invitation to settle in England, mainly in Crawley, West Sussex.

Since then, Chagossians have not been allowed to return to Diego Garcia.

Before the UK-Mauritius deal was signed last month, two Chagossian women living in the UK – who were born on Diego Garcia – launched a last-minute legal bid to stop it, saying the agreement did not guarantee the right of return to their island of birth.

The deal includes a £40m trust fund to support Chagossians, a component that the UN panel also questioned would “comply with the right of the Chagossian people to effective remedy… and prompt reparation”.

“The agreement also lacks provisions to facilitate the Chagossian people’s access to cultural sites on Diego Garcia and protect and conserve their unique cultural heritage,” the panel added.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We recognise the importance of the islands to Chagossians and have worked to ensure the agreement reflects this.”

Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel said the Conservatives “have been warning from the start that this deal is bad for British taxpayers and bad for the Chagossian people”.

“It is why I have introduced a bill in Parliament that would block the [agreement] and force the government to speak to the people at the heart of their surrender plans,” she said.

Both the House of Commons and House of Lords have until 3 July to pass a resolution to oppose the deal being ratified.

Love Island’s Shakira risks feud with co-star as bold decision sparks tension

Love Island viewers witnessed one Islander risk drama with another girl on the ITV2 series, as she boldly set out to steal their man amid a brutal dumping looming

There could be our first bit of drama on Love Island this week, as a possible feud was teased.

One girl’s bold decision sparked tension in the villa, and even led to a co-star making an equally brazen decision. Two girls sparked a rivalry over the same man, with one vowing not to be left single.

Maya Jama had tasked Islander Shakira with wooing one of the boys after being left single by her own partner Ben during Monday’s episode. New girl Toni had just entered the villa as a bombshell and claimed Ben for herself.

Maya warned Shakira that if she did not strike up a connection with another boy in 24 hours, then she would be sent home. So on Tuesday night we saw the Islander getting to work, grafting with the boys.

As she spent time with them to try and find a connection, desperate to stay in the villa, she certainly sparked concern amongst the other girls. It had been revealed that if Shakira picked a boy and they agreed to couple up with her, then that person’s current girl would be dumped instead of Shakira.

With the pressure on, Shakira made some bold moves by getting to know the guys and pulling them for chats, keeping them away from their current partners. But one girl was far from happy, and soon had the backing of her fellow Islanders.

Megan took matters into her own hands as she witnessed her boy Tommy speaking with a flirty Shakira. Clearly worrying about being dumped, she shared her fears with her co-stars, with Meg, Helena and Dejon all telling her not to sit back and let it happen.

As she prepared to “claim her man” she brazenly walked over and interrupted Shakira and Tommy’s cosy chat. She took him to the terrace, far away from her new rival, before confessing she was “jealous”.

With the girls clearly rattled by Shakira’s plan it certainly got tense – but a kiss between Megan and Tommy sealed they were definitely on the right track. But could Shakira’s actions in the villa spark drama with the others or even Megan going forward if she manages to survive the looming dumping?

It comes after fans questioned some “missing scenes” after some drama between two Islanders. Just last night on the series fans saw the couples formed, before bombshell Toni caused carnage.

While some couples were clearly thrilled by their pairings, others were not. Shakira and Ben even had a frosty moment just moments before Toni entered the villa and stole him.

Ben had claimed to Maya that their pairing was “love/hate” sparking confusion with fans. Many wondered if they’d missed some scenes, unsure why the couple were already “bickering” as one of their co-stars put it just hours into the show.

They’d had a chat before Toni’s entrance where Ben had seemed to hint he was already thinking about who else might come in, and he didn’t seem interested. Fans picked up on this, also noting Shakira didn’t look impressed by their chat.

As some viewers wondered if a secret row had not been aired, one fan posted on X: “I think Shakira was disappointed with Ben’s answers,” while another guessed: “Ben saying he’s not sure if he can put up with Shakira has gone right into red flag territory.” A third fan said: “Ben doesn’t like Shakira AT ALL!”

A fourth fan wrote: “Feeling horrible for Shakira right now Ben is not even trying to hide the fact he does not like her at all.” A further post read: “I said he doesn’t like Shakira.”

Other fans shared their confusion over the sudden tension between them. A fan posted: “Did I miss something between Shakira and Ben, wdym love/hate relationship? The first day isn’t even over yet.”

Love Island’s Maya Jama reveals major change to series just hours before launch

Love Island returns later tonight with its new series and host Maya Jama has teased what to expect from her fashion choices throughout the ITV2 show this summer

Host Maya Jama has teased over her wardrobe for the latest series of Love Island, which launches later tonight. The presenter returns to front the reality TV show as a dozen islanders enter the villa abroad for the first time.

Maya, 30, has been met with praise over outfits that she’s modelled hosting the ITV2 show in the past, with her fashion choices often complimented by fans. She has now teased what to expect from her wardrobe for the new series.

The presenter will join the original twelve islanders in the villa in Majorca on tonight’s launch episode as they get coupled-up for the first time and then return on occasion throughout the series. She’s teased that viewers can expect to see her in vintage-inspired designer looks.

She’s said to have showcased one example on a yacht last night as she made a “showstopping” entrance ahead of entering the villa itself. The “preloved” outfit consisted of a Versace one-piece swimsuit and sarong.

Maya Jama, in a colourful swimsuit, stood on a yacht.

Maya told the Sun: “We’re doing all archive, vintage, Nineties runway inspired.” The presenter, who has hosted Love Island since 2023, having taken over from Laura Whitmore, went on to say they are all from “hidden archives”.

She continued: “The designers have been hunting them down for the last few months for me. Everything should have a runway reference.” She suggested to the outlet that her wardrobe for the new series will be “very vintage”.

Maya then teased that she has chosen fashion options that she can’t “rip” or “ruin” during production of the reality TV show. She explained that that is because the vintage outfits have to “go back” after the host has worn them.

She shared photos of herself modelling the swimsuit on board the yacht on Instagram yesterday and wrote in the caption: “Having fun with it .. Love Island starts tomorrow at 9pm.” Maya later added: “Wearing full archive Versace.”

Tonight’s launch episode will introduce the first twelve islanders to viewers. It’s been announced that the process of them coupling-up for the first time will be “slightly different” this year, with Maya revealing the details to the girls, prior to the arrival of the first six boys taking part this series.

After getting the six of them to share their respective types with her, the presenter tells them: “This year things are slightly different. You’ve told me what your type on paper is, but does that match your ideal man in reality?”

As they line up, Maya announces: “Girls, in front of you there are six love hearts and each boy has given me their dating profile which is written on each of these hearts – shall we have a look at what these boys have to offer?”

Once they have looked at the profiles and discussed them as a group, they are given just seconds to make a decision on who to couple up with first. ITV has teased that they must run to a heart but only one girl is allowed at each one.

Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Love Island’s Tommy Bradley shares unexpected link to boxing star Anthony Joshua

EXCLUSIVE: Tommy Bradley is one of the singletons who is looking for love on the new series of Love Island, which kicks off tonight – and he’s got some huge connections

Tommy
Tommy Bradley has a connection with Anthony Joshua(Image: ITV)

Tommy Bradley is ready to make his mark as he enters the villa tonight alongside 11 other hopefuls for the launch of the show’s 12th series – and he’s already packing some heavyweight connections.

The 24-year-old fitness buff from London just so happens to have brushed shoulders with boxing royalty. Yep, none other than Anthony Joshua. While he hasn’t met him just yet, Tommy’s brother works closely with the boxer.

But it’s not just AJ-level abs Tommy’s proud of – it’s that signature slicked-back hair. “It sounds weird,” he confessed, “but I blow-dry it for 20–25 minutes, style it, hairspray it, and sleep in a woolly hat to keep it in place.” Yes, really.

He even ruled out shaving it off for a date challenge. “No chance. It’s my best feature. I’ve had the same haircut since I was a kid!” So why sign up? “All my mates are in relationships – I’m the last single one,” he said. “Why not go away, meet new people, have a fantastic summer, and maybe come back with a girlfriend? No-brainer.”

He packed eight pairs of swim shorts and hit the gym hard in prep, bumping up the weights and making sure he was villa-ready. But if you’re wondering whether Tommy’s more lover or fighter, the truth is… he’s not quite either yet. “I’ve never been in a proper serious relationship,” he admits. “Just situationships that fizzled out after a few months. I’ve never even said ‘I love you’ – unless you count my mum and my nan.”

And speaking of mum, she didn’t hold back before his villa debut. “She actually brought up the sex thing and said, ‘If you do, I’ll be watching,’” Tommy reveals. Awkward. As for whether he’ll go there on-screen? “I’m not saying I will… but if the moment is right, maybe. Who knows?”

ITV’s Love Island has a string of secret sex rules, which the saucy singletons must follow. The new series of the smash-hit dating show, which kicks off tonight, is sure to be one of the steamiest yet after bosses revealed that sex scenes would be aired i n the Hideaway for the first time this summer.

The jaw-dropping move has divided viewers, with some saying they don’t know want to see what pops up beneath the sheets under the Spanish sun. However, others, think the rule change is just what the new series needs as executive producer Mike Spencer said: “If sex happens, we’ll show it. The Hideaway will be open 24 hours. We need to keep the show fresh and exciting.”

“After 10 years, the stats speak for themselves. The show will continue to thrive. We the producers need to stay ahead of the curve. The whole ‘twists and turns’ thing is about making the show fresh. We’re going to give it all we’ve got.” Well, mission accomplished.

Tommy

Host Maya Jama, back with her signature sass and slay, said: “I feel like they forgot last year that you could come in the Hideaway at any time. We did tell them, but they kept forgetting!” Not anymore, Maya.

Megan Moore, who goes by Meg, is a 25-year-old payroll specialist from Southampton, told us: “It’s not ideal to be having it on telly, but you don’t know because you’re in that bubble. If it comes naturally, then it happens. You can’t ever never say never.”

Meanwhile, Sophie Lee, a 29-year-old former fire breather, influencer and motivational speaker from Manchester, is taking a different route: “I am celibate. I’ve practiced celibacy throughout my dating life. It’ll take a really hot guy to change that! For me, intimacy is giving a piece of my soul. If I’m not in a confident place, it’s my problem – not his.”

“I’ve gone over 8 months celibate now, I was two years celebate before, and I’m proud of that. I only want to have sex when I truly want to – not out of pressure.”

Love Island 2025 begins tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.

Brits heading to 4 Canary Islands issued warning as ‘pre-alert’ activated

A cluster of popular Canary Islands have been put under an emergency ‘pre-alert’ from the government – resulting in British tourists being told to follow a series of strict rules

Las Teresitas beach panorama view from the Mirador Playa De Las Teresitas viewing point, near Santa Cruz in Tenerife volcano island, Canary islands in Spain. Las Teresitas is a beach near San Andres village, one of the most popular beaches of Canary Islands for locals and tourists with white sand. It is an artificial beach with sand from Western Sahara Desert, there are two piers and a long breakwater to prevent the waves of the shore, the beach has three parts, the Los Moros, Tras la Arena and ravine of Las Teresas. The ocean sea water is transarent, crystal clear with palm trees, beach bars, water sports and many facilities making it ideal for tourism and holidays. UK holidaymakers jetting off to the Canary Islands must follow strict advice, following an emergency warning from the government.

Tourists and locals have both been warned that select islands across the archipelago are currently at ‘high risk’ of wildfires. The ‘pre-alert’ – which came into effect on Sunday, June 1 – comes as hot, dry winds from the Sahara travel over to the holiday hotspots months combined with a sudden drop in rainfall.

This meteorological phenomenon, known as Calima, often results in a thick layer of dust covering the Canaries – drastically reducing visibility and air quality. According to reports, it can also increase the risk of wildfires due to drying out vegetation and increasing the ‘flammability of materials’.

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro are all covered by the warning. “Given the current climatic, meteorological, and environmental circumstances, having passed the usual period of precipitation in the Canary Islands, it is estimated that the conditions are in place to declare a Pre-Alert Situation due to this being a period of medium to high risk of forest fires,” the Canary Island’s government announced.

Tourists are now being urged to follow ‘self-protection’ advice provided by the General Directorate of Emergencies. This includes many obvious but effective recommendations such as:

  • Do not throw lit cigarette butts or matches, either while walking or out of a car window.
  • Do not launch rockets, firecrackers, fireworks, or other fire-producing devices in dangerous areas, even in open fields, agricultural land, or, especially, in residential areas surrounded by forests.
  • Never leave trash or debris in the forest. Use appropriate collection services and containers.
  • Remove branches that touch the facade of your house/ apartment.
  • Have basic firefighting tools (hoses, axes) and some water supplies ready.
Flares are seen on the horizon as the fire advances through the forest toward the town of La Laguna and Los Rodeos airport in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023. Firefighters have battled through the night to try to bring under control the worst wildfire in decades on the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife, a major tourist destination. The fire in the north of the island started Tuesday night and has forced the evacuation or confinement of nearly 8,000 people. Regional officials say Friday's efforts will be crucial in containing the fire. (AP Photo/Arturo Rodriguez)
Tourists should follow strict safety advice when visiting the Canary Islands this summer(Image: AP)

While no wildfires have yet to break out across the four islands since the warning, previous incidents have wreaked havoc on the archipelago. In 2023, forest fires in Tenerife ripped through more than 15,000 hectares of land and resulted in 12,000 people being forced to evacuate. This particular blaze was later blamed on arsonists – but demonstrates how quickly fires on the islands can spread.

If you’re ever caught in a wildfire while in the Canary Islands, you should call 112 and follow the instructions of the authorities. Always follow recommended evacuation routes, avoiding shortcuts, and move away from the direction of the wind if possible.

Helicopters fly over the area of Pico Cho Marcial in Arafo to drop water over a huge wildfire raging through forested areas that surround the Mount Teide volcano natural park, on the Canary island of Tenerife, on August 20, 2023. Firefighters made gains in their battle against a vast wildfire on Tenerife today after better-than-expected overnight weather helped them keep the blaze from destroying homes on the Spanish holiday island. The huge fire broke out late on August 15, 2023 in a mountainous northeastern area, quickly morphing into the Canary Islands' biggest-ever. So far the blaze, which has a perimeter of 84 kilometres (52 miles), has burned through 11,600 hectares (28,700 acres), or just over 6% of Tenerife island, forcing more than 12,000 people to flee their homes. The General Directorate of Emergencies advises tourists caught in a fire to ‘stay calm’ and follow the accommodation’s protocol when evacuating. “In open country, move away from the wind and, if possible, enter an already burned area,” they said.

“Wet a handkerchief and cover your face to avoid the smoke. Do not take shelter in wells or caves. Near the sea, go near the water and, if necessary, go inside. If you are in the car, take a break in a sheltered place, close the doors and windows, and turn off the car’s ventilation. Turn on your headlights so you can be found in the smoke.”

EXCLUSIVE: Love Island 2025 star Alima Gagigo has opened up about the extraordinary moment she delivered her baby sister at home – and she’s determined to make a difference in the villa

Love Island stunner Alima Gagigo is already making headlines – and not just for her villa debut. In a story that’s as jaw-dropping as it is heartwarming, the 23-year-old Londoner has revealed she once delivered her baby sister at home using a shoelace to tie the umbilical cord.

The incident happened in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, ahead of the brand new series kicking off on Monday June 9, Alima shared the extraordinary moment that proved she’s not just reality TV-ready – she’s resilient under pressure, too.

“Yeah! It was back in January 2020. My sister’s a COVID baby,” she said. “It was just me and my mum at home, and the labour was 15 minutes. I had to tie the umbilical cord with a shoelace while on the phone with paramedics. It was scary but amazing looking back.”

Alima is a wealth management client services executive living in Glasgow. Now, the educated beauty is swapping emergency home births for bikinis and bombshell drama in the sun-soaked Love Island villa, and she’s determined to make a difference while doing it. Representation, she says, is front and centre.

“100%. When I watched the show last year, seeing girls like Whitney made a difference,” Alima told us. “If I can be that person this year, it could give confidence to others who might want to go on the show in the future. Representation really matters.”

Alima, who describes her hair plans as “glueless wigs – closures instead of frontals,” is stepping into the ITV2 spotlight following in the footsteps of fan favourite love island star Whitney Adebayo, who starred on the 10th series joining as a bombshell. And it turns out Whitney’s already showing love for her fellow Islander.

“I actually didn’t know that – this is the first time I’m hearing it!” she said when told of Whitney’s online support. “I follow her and absolutely loved her journey. As another dark-skinned woman, I could really relate. Maybe she supports me because she knows what I might be going through.”

The support from her circle has also been overwhelming, with her family cheering her on from the sidelines.

“Everyone’s buzzing! Friends and family are super excited. My mum was especially excited – taking pictures and everything when she dropped me at the airport!”

And while Love Island’s latest season is already making headlines – ITV bosses recently confirmed they won’t shy away from showing sex on screen if it happens – Alima admits she is “going to stay true to myself.”

“On the outside, I don’t really do that kind of thing, so I don’t think I’ll be getting up to much in the villa either.”

That down-to-earth energy is exactly what fans are already loving. Alima, who says she’s “not really anxious” about how she’ll be perceived as a Black woman on the show, is focused on being authentic.

“Seeing girls like Whitney and Mimii [Ngulube] last year who were themselves and came across amazing gave me confidence,” she added. “I want to be fully myself, regardless of stereotypes.”

She’s not afraid to laugh either – especially when it comes to her biggest dating ick.

“Honestly, if someone rapped or sang to me and it was bad – I wouldn’t know what to say. If it’s good, then fair enough, but if not…awkward!”

As the 2025 series kicks off with a fresh group of hopefuls and more drama promised than ever before, Alima is clearly more than ready to hit the villa.

Incredible private islands you can only visit on a cruise including a Disney island

Cruise lines have their own private islands for guests to enjoy – take a look at four seriously bucket list-worthy destinations you’ll want on your radar

The appeal of cruise holidays has traditionally focused on visiting a wide variety of places. But an increasing number of firms are choosing to drop anchor at exclusive destinations in idyllic locations.

Private island stops are becoming a highlight of itineraries, with big players investing heavily in castaway cays reserved for their guests. Holland America Line, part of the Carnival Group, recently revealed a revamp of their popular Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

A new pier will allow more ships to dock at the destination – soon to be named RelaxAway island, hinting at the investment planned for more laid back leisure facilities.

Other lines have equally big ideas. Expanding beyond The Bahamas – where most island escapes have been based to date – Royal Caribbean is hoping to develop a new Perfect Day project in Mexico (due to open in 2027), while MSC has announced plans for an Abu Dhabi private island experience in the Middle East. And why not? – discovering a secret island is, after all, the stuff of childhood dreams.

Here are some of the fantasy islands where it’s already possible to set sail.

In 1977, this was the first island to be bought by a company solely for their guests. Norwegian Cruise Line has built a resort with bars and restaurants over the years and there are still more developments to come in the 268-acre tropical oasis.

You can book guided snorkelling tours around a marine sanctuary, or rent equipment for parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and jet skiing. For families, there’s an aqua park with inflatable water obstacles.

Labadee, Haiti

Royal Caribbean has invested in a private patch of a peninsula on the northern coast of Cuba’s neighbour, Haiti. Set against plunging coastal cliffs, a choice of beaches ranges from the peaceful Columbus Cove to the livelier Adrenaline Beach.

For thrill-seekers, there’s a chance to jump on a roller coaster or try the world’s longest overwater zip line. Unlike many private locations, interactions with local communities are possible at an artisan market and a cultural programme highlighting Haitian history and traditions is in the works.

Despite its popularity, the edgy destination is marred by unrest. Recently, stops were temporarily suspended due to “an abundance of caution” although it’s hoped they will resume in the future.

Around 30 miles north of NCL’s private paradise is Disney’s answer to a magical far-flung tropical kingdom. Although there are currently no Pirates of the Caribbean in this Atlantic cay, secluded coves were once used by the likes of Blackbeard in the 18th century.

During the US Prohibition, the island served as a smuggling base and in the 1970s its airstrips were used by drug runners. A £18.5million investment transformed it in the mid-1990s, including a channel allowing ships to dock. Expect themed environments and areas dedicated to different age groups, including the adults-only Serenity Bay.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Carnival Corporation invested £63million to develop this site near Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic’s northern coast. Princess Cruises and Holland America guests can visit, following in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus who landed here in 1492. Extending from a hillside, zip lines traverse the port complex and there’s a 25,000 square-foot pool area with a swim-up bar, water slides, and private cabanas. The island is part of the mainland, but the private area has a big advantage over island escapes when it comes to exploring and interacting with communities.
