Good Morning Britain interrupted as Richard Madeley says ‘I’m going to make a confession’

Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley was joined by Kate Garraway on Thursday’s edition of the ITV show

Good Morning Britain was interrupted on Thursday (October 16) as Richard Madeley said, “I’m going to make a confession”.

During today’s instalment of the popular ITV show, Richard and his co-presenter Kate Garraway brought viewers up to speed on the latest developments from Britain and beyond.

Laura Tobin joined them in the studio to deliver regular weather forecasts, whilst Charlotte Hawkins took care of the day’s remaining headlines.

Richard and Kate discussed former government advisor Dominic Cummings‘ claims regarding China, alongside a fresh police initiative involving GPS ankle tags to tackle shoplifting.

Later, Charlotte revealed that the number of drivers being handed penalty points has surged in the last year, with speed cameras catching record numbers of motorists breaking legal limits, reports Wales Online.

Almost ten million points were added to licences in 2024.

Whilst discussing the matter with pundits Kwasi Kwarteng and Ayesha Hazarika, Richard announced, “I’m going to make a confession now, it’s not a big deal, but whatever.”

The host then admitted he carried six points on his driving licence, explaining: “Both because of speed cameras. One for doing 34 mph on a dual carriageway at four thirty in the morning when it was a 30 mph [zone], I didn’t realise that.

“And one for doing 24 mph in a 20 mph zone at four thirty in the morning. And I have to say, I don’t mind being fined because, yes, I have broken the limit inadvertently, but to get three points on a licence, as well, seemed a bit harsh.

“I only say this because Co-op Insurance has done a survey and they’ve announced the results this morning. A surge in drivers has been caught by speed cameras, a huge, huge rise.”

He went on: “A 12% increase in the number of penalty points added to licences last year. Of course, if you get to 12, it means you lose your licence.

“Of course, speeding has to be controlled. Are we over-penalising drivers for relatively minor infractions? I’m not sure.”

Kwasi chimed in, “My view on this is that those 20 mph speed limits are almost impossible. You’ve got to be very, very careful.”

Richard then revealed that he uses cruise control, which Ayesha quipped was “such a Richard Madeley thing to say”.

“It may be a Richard Madeley thing to say, but actually it protects me from getting more points,” Richard concluded.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am

Major sporting event interrupted by BUG INVASION as ground staff forced to fumigate stadium

A SWARM of flying bugs halted the Women’s Cricket World Cup grudge match between India and Pakistan.

Players from both sides tried to fix the problem by waving towels and spraying bug repellent.

But organisers called for heavy duty measures when India were 154 for four in the 34th over of the group match.

With the insect invasion in full swing, a man in a gas mask emerged to fumigate the pitch with an industrial grade bug spray cannon.

Both sets of players were forced to leave the field and fans had to sit through a 15-minute delay.

But even that didn’t seem to have the desired effect.

Once play resumed, it wasn’t long before another stoppage was brought on by a bug flying into the eye of Pakistani bowler Rameen Shamim.

Indian batters repeatedly moaned to the umpire about being affected by the insects.

Unsurprisingly, there is nothing written into cricket law to guide umpires when bugs bother the players.

But they are advised to signal a dead ball if a player is “disadvantaged by an animal within the field of play”.

India ended up winning the clash with their geographical neighbours by 88 runs.

The match was played on neutral ground in Colombo, Sri Lanka, due to political tension between the two nations.

And there were no handshakes between the players before the action got underway.

Colombo is proving to be a troublesome venue for cricket matches of late.

On Saturday, the match between Sri Lanka and Australia was washed out without a single ball being bowled due to heavy rain.

Coronation Street wedding day interrupted by horror collapse as death ‘sealed’

Love is in the air for Dev Alahan and Bernie Winter on Coronation Street – but a burglary, debauched behaviour, and a medical emergency risk ruining their big day

Dev Alahan and Bernie Winter are set to marry on Coronation Street this week

It is wedding season on Coronation Street – and Dev Alahan and Bernie Winter are set to tie the knot with a lavish ceremony. But as fans of the long-running ITV continuing drama will know – happiness rarely runs smooth in the world of soaps.

Dev, played by Jimmi Harkishin, has been living on the Cobbles since 1999 and married Sunita Alahan, played by Shobna Gulati, in 2004 – before she was killed off in 2013, surviving the Rover’s fire only to be murdered by arsonist Karl Munro, played by John Michie. Fans may be hoping Dev has a happier second marriage.

And he is set to swap vows with Bernie, played by Jane Hazlegrove, in scenes this coming week. The pair have been an on-screen item since September last year – growing close after the death of Bernie’s son, Paul.

After enduring a brief split, the pair will become husband and wife – if they can survive a series of dramas. Stag party shenanigans, a burglary, a surprise proposal, a shock collapse and a hospital dash midway through the ceremony all look to cause havoc with the wedding plans.

Fans tuning in at the start of the week will see Dev and Bernie embracing the last of their single lives as they celebrate their stag and hen parties. But when Bernie learns Dev and the boys have hired a pole dancer to join them at the Rovers, she is not best pleased.

With the ceremony set to appear on Wednesday’s episode, trials face the couple as some guests fall ill and have to watch via a live stream. Bernie’s emotions run wild when she forgets her lucky charm locket that contains a photo of late son, Paul – and disaster strikes when she runs home to retrieve it only to find a burglar in her house.

While the big day is supposed to be all about Dev and Bernie, Debbie Webster steals some attention for herself when she gets down on one knee to propose to Ronnie. And fans will need to wait to find out if Bernie even makes it down the aisle – as she collapses in front of Dev, leaving him scared for the life of his bride.

The Corrie cast have been discussing all the highs and lows of the wedding day plans. Bernie actress Jane, 57, laughs: “The day goes from bad to worse!

“That’s what is so brilliant about Coronation Street, you don’t know what you’re going to get until you open the page of the script and that’s what is so fantastic about how it plays out – we’ve got this woman raving down the aisle and the next minute she’s collapsed and an ambulance is on its way!”

Jane also revealed that she had a hand in the design of Bernie’s wedding dress.

She revealed: “I knew that Bernie wouldn’t go down the road of wearing a traditional dress. I had seen some old footage of Elkie Brookes on TV and she was wearing a kaftan.

“I am a big fan of Elkie so that was the initial inspiration, but this is for Bernie so it needed to be a bit extra. Our fantastic talented costume department came up with the 1970s style white dress that is a bit Elkie Brookes, a bit Demis Roussos and very Bernie Winter.”

Fans can see all the drama unfold as Coronation Street airs this week on ITV1 and via ITVX on Monday at 8pm, Wednesday at 8pm, and Friday at 8pm.

Saturday Kitchen interrupted as major celebrity chef calls into the studio

This week’s edition of Saturday Kitchen descended into chaos when a huge name from the culinary world called in

Saturday Kitchen halted its usual proceedings today (Saturday, 5th July) when a major celebrity chef called into the show.

Following a segment with Rick Stein in Lancashire, the show returned to presenter Matt Tebbutt in the studio after rustling up a carbonara with Gennaro Contaldo.

However, before moving onto Matt’s interview with Fleur East, the current star of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, Gennaro interrupted the show to take a phone call.

He revealed none other than Jamie Oliver was on the phone, causing an eruption of laughter from the rest of the guests.

Jamie, the beloved chef, TV presenter and restaurant owner, exclaimed “Hello everyone!” down the line as the Saturday Kitchen stars all applauded.

The phone call continued with Jamie revealing his Saturday morning plans and promising to tune into the show soon.

“Just come back from the market,” he shared. “I’m going to be home in two minutes and I’m going to turn the TV on.”

Matt’s guests this week, which also included Clare Smyth, wine expert Helen McGinn and chocolatier Paul A. Young, all let out an “Aww”.

BBC presenter Matt then quipped: “Jamie’s just been down the market, he actually lives that life.

“He goes down the market, buys his stuff, then goes home on his little scooter.”

As Gennaro told Jamie, “I love you and miss you!”, Matt swiftly moved on to the next segment to prevent any more disruption.

Italian chef Gennaro is a firm fan-favourite of the show and many viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise him for another classic Saturday Kitchen appearance.

“Gennaro is the GREATEST!!” one user exclaimed. “I had the honour and privilege to get to know him years ago during the opens of all the Jamie’s Italians.

“His passion and love is second to one. Plus his food is always perfection.”

And another fan declared: “27 minutes in and this is already a vintage #SaturdayKitchen. Gennaro putting in an all-timer performance – but you come to expect the best from Matt and co.”

Saturday Kitchen airs Saturdays from 10am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
