Americans being evacuated from Israel, including young adults on trip

June 19 (UPI) — The U.S. government and a Florida agency are working to arrange evacuation flights and cruise ship departures for Americans who want to leave Israel.

That includes participants in Birthright Israel, which is a free, 10-day heritage trip to Israel offered to young Jewish adults between the ages of 18-26.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said Wednesday his embassy is working to get Americans out of Israel.

“Urgent notice! American citizens wanting to leave Israel-US Embassy in Israel @usembassyjlm is working on evacuation flights & cruise ship departures,” Huckabee wrote on his personal X account and later reposted on official accounts. “You must enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). You will be alerted w/ updates.”

The State Department later said that it has “no announcement about assisting private U.S. citizens to depart at this time.”

The situation is complicated by the closure of Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. Jordan’s airports are open for commercial flights after being shut on Friday and Saturday.

On Tuesday, Americans participating in Birthright Israel boarded buses and sailed on the Crown Iris, a luxury Israeli cruise ship operated by Mano Maritime, to Cyprus. After the 13-hour voyage, they were flown to Tampa, Fla., on four jets chartered by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

In October 2023, DeSantis’ office flew nearly 700 Americans from Israel to Florida after Hamas attacked the Middle Eastern country.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management wrote on Facebook Sunday that it is “actively coordinating efforts to assist Americans seeking evacuation from the hostile situation in Israel.”

Sierra Dean, a spokesperson for the governor, said stranded Americans can fill out an emergency evacuation form from Grey Bull Rescue, a Tampa nonprofit that helps rescue citizens in conflict zones. Project Dynamo, a nonprofit also in Tampa, has teams on the ground in Israel and Jordan to assist.

Birthright Israel, a nonprofit, said it will pay for all its participants’ transportation costs.

When the airstrikes began, Birthright had about 2,800 young adult participants in Israel with 20,000 planning to go there this summer. Trips were canceled after the Israel-Hamas war, but were resumed in January 2023.

“Today we witnessed the true spirit of Birthright Israel – not only as an educational journey, but as a global family committed to the safety and well-being of every participant,” the organization’s CEO, Gidi Mark, said in a statement to The Times of Israel.

“This was a complex and emotional operation, carried out under immense pressure, and we are proud to have brought 1,500 young adults safely to Cyprus. Our team continues to work around the clock to secure solutions for the remaining participants still in Israel.”

Birthright participants were instructed to keep the voyage a secret by their group leaders.

“We’ve spent the last week going to bomb shelters every single night and barely getting any sleep,” Cantor Josh Goldberg told WPEC-TV. “So at least we all got to sleep on the boat.”

About 1,300 Birthright participants were still in Israel.

Ryanair blasts 5 countries including UK over major ‘scandal’ causing delays

Budget airline Ryanair has scathed a cluster of European countries in what it describes as a ‘scandal’ of understaffing and mismanagement responsible for thousands of delayed flights

(FILES) Passsengers board a Ryanair plane at Carcassonne Airport in Carcassonne, southern France on September 27, 2018. Irish airline Ryanair is to cancel the two routes it operated from the Vatry airport in the Marne department, citing the increase in the tax on airline tickets in France planned in the 2025 budget, the department announced on March 13, 2025. The airline has long slammed Europe’s record when it comes to ATC delays(Image: AFP via Getty Images)

Ryanair has unleashed a savage attack on five European countries, including the UK, over thousands of delayed flights. The budget airline has slammed France, Spain, Germany, Greece, and the UK for having the ‘worst’ Air Traffic Control (ATC) delays in 2024, based on Eurocontrol data.

It is a drum Ryanair has long banged, and comes shortly after it published its name-and-shame ‘ATC League of Delays’. ATC delays can be caused by a plethora of reasons, including unavoidable factors such as the weather or military activity.

However, Ryanair argues a huge ‘majority’ of these delays are directly caused by understaffed airports and ‘mismanaged ATCs’. “Despite 20 years of investment in SESAR (Europe’s failed ‘Single Sky Project’) no progress has been made,” the airline fumed.

“The new Commission under Ursula von der Leyen has committed itself to delivering competitiveness and efficiency in Europe. Yet, it continues to allow the mismanagement and staff shortages in French, Spanish, German, Greek and UK ATC services.”

Ryanair says the UK doesn’t care about its airline passengers (Image: NurPhoto via Getty Images)

According to Ryanair’s latest press release, in 2024, France experienced a staggering 35,1000 flight delays – impacting some 6.3 million passengers. Spain came a close second, with 32,700 delayed flights affecting 5.9 million passengers. Germany (18,700 delayed flights), Greece (5,000), and the UK (3,380) were also cited in the top five worst ATCs.

“If the Danes, the Belgians, the Dutch, the Irish and the Slovakians can properly staff their ATC services and eliminate ‘ATC capacity’ delays, then why can’t we expect a similar service from the very well-funded (by airlines), but hopelessly mismanaged French, Spanish, German, Greek and UK ATC providers,” Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said. “The difference is that these are protected State Monopolies, who don’t care about customer service.

“They don’t care about passengers, and they don’t care about their airline customers either. Every year they are short-staffed and they are responsible for over 90 per cent of Europe’s flight delays, which adds an extra 10 per cent to aviation emissions in Europe.”

The boss described the data as a ‘scandal’ of short-staffing and mismanagement, arguing it is now time for the European Commission to ‘intervene and demand an efficient, competitive ATC service’ from all of Europe. “Ryanair, our customers, and our passengers are fed up with these avoidable ATC delays, which are imposed on us every Summer by the French, the Germans, the Spanish, the Greeks and the British,” he added.

Christian Petzold a travel expert and Marketing Director over at BCN Travel, echoed Ryanair’s sentiment – arguing ATC delays continue to ‘frustrate’ both passengers and airlines every summer. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, he said: “Ryanair are right to point out the contrast with high-performing ATC services in countries like Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Slovakia.

“These countries have managed to staff their control centres and keep operations smooth even in peak summer. For example the Irish Aviation Authority is consistently one of the best for punctuality and minimal en-route delays, due to proactive recruitment and training pipelines for air traffic controllers. In contrast strikes, understaffing and bureaucratic inertia cripple ATC in France and Germany – two of the busiest airspaces in Europe.”

Christian added that the European Commission must take “action and demand accountability” as well as push for competition. Otherwise, passengers will see no ‘real change’ in European aviation.

The Mirror has approached the European Commission for comment.

Asda reveals huge shake-up to 180 in-store cafes including new menu items and digital screens

ASDA is set to roll out a huge shake-up across 180 in-store cafes with the launch of new menu items and digital ordering screens.

One of the UK’s biggest supermarkets is pumping £10million into freshening up dozens of cafes.

The retailer will start the makeover this month with all works set to be complete by the end of October.

The 180 cafes, managed by Compass Group, will be upgraded to include new digital ordering screens where shoppers can pick what food and drink they want.

Customers will also be able to order from their tables or via staffed tills.

A number of existing menu items will continue to be on sale including full English breakfasts, fish and chips, lasagne and jacket potatoes.

But some new ones will be added as well, including smashed avocado on toast, katsu chicken curry, topped salad bowls and wraps.

Shoppers will be able to buy full 12inch pizzas or single pizza slices from the cafes for the first time as well.

Customers can pick from flavours including margherita, pepperoni, American sizzler, spicy chicken and meat feast.

There will also be a range of hot drinks on offer as well as cold ones like iced coffees and cakes.

Asda’s “Kids Eat for £1” café meal deals will remain available.

We have asked Asda how much some of the menu items will cost and for the full list of 180 stores where cafes will be freshened up and will update this story when we have heard back.

Four simple ways to save money at Asda

Ian McEvans, vice president of commercial food at Asda, said: “This significant investment alongside allows us to bring a new look and feel, as well making improvements to the service and a refresh of the menu.”

It comes after some other changes at Asda, including the retailer ditching Star Products on its loyalty scheme at the start of the year.

However, the move to axe the feature came as the supermarket brought back its Rollback price commitment at the end of January.

Asda introduced the price cuts at its more than 1,200 stores meaning lower prices on 4,000 products.

Then in March, prices were lowered on 10,000 products by up to 45% as the retailer looked to steal its rivals’ customers.

New Asda boss Allan Leighton insisted the supermarket’s turnaround was on last month, despite the supermarket’s sales falling 3.1% in the four months to the end of April.

How to save at Asda

Shop the budget range

Savvy shopper Eilish Stout-Cairns recommends that shoppers grab items from Asda’s Just Essentials range.

She said: “Asda’s budget range is easy to spot as it’s bright yellow! Keep your eyes peeled for yellow and you’ll find their Just Essentials range.

“It’s great value and I’ve found it has a much wider selection of budget items compared to other supermarkets.

 Sign up to Asda Rewards

The savvy-saver also presses on the importance of signing up to Asda’s reward scheme.

She said: “Asda Rewards is free to join and if you shop at Asda you should absolutely sign up.

“As an Asda Rewards member, you’ll get exclusive discounts and offers, and you’ll also be able to earn 10% cashback on Star Products.

“This will go straight into your cashpot, and once you’ve earned at least £1, you can transfer the money in your cashpot into ASDA vouchers.

We’ve previously rounded up the best supermarket loyalty schemes – including the ones that will save you the most money.

Look out for booze deals

Eilish always suggests that shoppers looking to buy booze look out for bargain deals.

She said: “Asda often has an alcohol offer on: buy six bottles and save 25%.

“The offer includes selected bottles with red, white and rose options, as well as prosecco. There are usually lots of popular bottles included, for example, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot and Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C.

“Obviously, the more expensive the bottles you choose, the more you save.”

Join Facebook groups

The savvy saver also recommends that fans of Asda join Facebook groups to keep in the know about the latest bargains in-store.

Eilish said: “I recommend joining the Latest Deals Facebook Group to find out about the latest deals and new launches in store.

“Every day, more than 250,000 deal hunters share their latest bargain finds and new releases.

“For example, recently a member shared a picture of Asda’s new Barbie range spotted in store.

“Another member shared the bargain outdoor plants she picked up, including roses for 47p, blackcurrant bushes for 14p and topiary trees for 14p.”

Mr Leighton urged Sun readers to come back to see the UK’s third largest grocery chain’s revitalised stores.

In May last year, Asda said it would invest majorly overhaul 170 stores as part of a £50million makeover.

SUPERMARKETS SHAKING UP IN-STORE CAFES

The latest announcement from Asda on its in-store cafe upgrades comes as two other major supermarkets row back on their cafe offerings.

Sainsbury’s shut 61 in-store cafes in April as it looks to explore “future opportunities” for the spaces.

The retailer said it was closing its remaining in-store cafes due to lower footfall and as its hybrid cafe and food halls become more popular.

It is likely to replace the cafes with restaurants run by franchises, such as Starbucks and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

In March, Morrisons said it would shut 52 cafes as part of a huge overhaul of its store estate.

The retailer also said 18 Market Kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies would shut.

Forgotten XI of players you didn’t realise were playing Club World Cup including ex-Man Utd, Chelsea & Real Madrid stars

THE CLUB WORLD CUP is fast approaching as teams prepare to do battle in the US this month.

The expanded tournament will see 32 teams compete for the coveted trophy and a reported £100million jackpot.

The first-ever edition of the new Club World Cup format will take place in the US.

Chelsea and Manchester City are the sole representatives from the Premier League.

But there are a host of other big-name teams from around the world.

And as a result, there are numerous star players turning out — including those who have vanished from recent memory…

GK: HUGO LLORIS (LAFC)

Tottenham’s former captain, 38, joined LAFC at the start of 2024 and has already cemented his place as a fan favourite.

Lloris has clocked up 67 appearances in that short time, hot on the heels of his 447 outings in London.

The World Cup-winning stopper has even landed a trophy in the City of Angels, scooping the US Open Cup in September.

And after helping LAFC win a playoff to replace Club Leon, Lloris will be between the sticks for the Group D opener against Chelsea on June 16.

But his presence is sure to reignite the Blues’ capital rivalry with Spurs.

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will see the World’s best players decide which club is the greatest

CB: SERGIO RAMOS (MONTERREY)

Having led Real Madrid to four Club World Cups in the past, Ramos will be feeling confident he can help Mexican side Monterrey get far this summer.

The centre-back is already captaining the team just four months after joining following spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla.

But at 39 years of age, Ramos has shown he has still got what it takes to boss a defence.

And he will need to be at his best to help Monterrey get past Inter Milan and River Plate in Group E.

CB: THIAGO SILVA (FLUMINENSE)

Once a Chelsea icon, always a Chelsea icon.

Even at 40 years old, Silva would still likely walk back into the Blues’ XI.

Instead, he is king of the hill at Fluminense, saving them from relegation in his first season.

And Silva’s know-how should help the Brazilians get out of a group which includes German giants Borussia Dortmund.

CB: NICOLAS OTAMENDI (BENFICA)

A two-time Premier League winner with Man City, Otamendi has gone on to win more trophies since leaving the Etihad.

Having now completed five seasons at Benfica, the 37-year-old has a Portuguese league title to boot.

And he even played a key role in Argentina’s World Cup win in 2022.

Otamendi is just one of several big forgotten names playing at Benfica, who are in a tough group with Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors.

RWB: JOAO CANCELO (AL-HILAL)

Once regarded as the best full-back in world football, Cancelo’s fall from grace was swift after starring at giants including Inter Milan, Juventus, Man City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

He is now playing in Saudi Arabia, earning a fortune with moneybags Al-Hilal.

At the age of 31, Cancelo is still playing in his prime years.

And he will be looking to inflict damage when Al-Hilal come up against reigning champions Real Madrid in Group H.

CM: ANDER HERRERA (BOCA JUNIORS)

It’s been six years since Herrera, 35, lit up Old Trafford in a Manchester United shirt.

His tenacity in midfield endeared him to supporters while raking in FOUR trophies including the FA Cup and Europa League.

After playing for PSG and a second spell at Athletic Bilbao, Herrera now finds himself in Argentina with Boca Juniors.

But just six appearances in all competitions since his January switch means Herrera may not be guaranteed a starting spot in the US.

CM: RUBEN NEVES (AL-HILAL)

Why he was not snapped up by a fellow Premier League club while at Wolves remains a mystery.

Neves, 28, is only entering his prime now and continues to be a key player for Portugal.

Yet he finds himself playing in Saudi with Al-Hilal, completing a shock move two years ago before leading them to a Treble last season.

Neves would still walk into most European squads and could attract interest with some strong Club World Cup performances — but that’s only if he wants to leave the riches of the Middle East.

LWB: ALEX TELLES (BOTAFOGO)

A miserable time at Manchester United saw Telles, 32, fail to live up to the hype as one of Europe’s best left-footers.

After winning trophies galore at Galatasaray and Porto, he left Old Trafford empty-handed after just two years.

But he has enjoyed plenty of success since then, winning trophies at Sevilla, Al-Nassr and now Botafogo.

The Brazilian champs are coming in with a host of experienced homegrown talents and Telles’ deadly free-kicks are likely to cause some damage.

CAM: ANGEL DI MARIA (BENFICA)

Man United’s flop winger is returning to boyhood Argentina club Rosario Central this summer — but only after he leads out Benfica for the final time at the Club World Cup.

Ignoring his duff sole season in the north west, Di Maria’s record means he will go down as one of football’s most talented and decorated wingers ever.

His two years at Benfica have not yielded any trophies, however.

And Di Maria, 37, will be desperate to make amends before leaving Europe for good.

ST: EDINSON CAVANI (BOCA JUNIORS)

Another former United player, Cavani will feel he did not do himself justice during his two seasons in England.

Having also struggled at Valencia, the 38-year-old is now leading the way for Argentine giants Boca Juniors

20 goals in 39 games last year showed Cavani still has an eye for goal.

And although his pace may have gone, the experienced Uruguayan’s sheer physicality and clever movement will surely see him in the mix for the Golden Boot.

ST: OLIVIER GIROUD (LAFC)

Last but not least, Giroud will face off against old side Chelsea later this month.

His extra-time assist helped LAFC book their place at the tournament ahead of Club America.

Giroud has already become a talisman for his Californian side, preferring the role of creator to goalscorer.

And his cunning know-how could help the experienced poacher nick a goal when he faces off against a young Blues defence.

I’m a gardening pro – my easy steps – including a £2.25 Dunelm trick – will banish garden pests like aphids this summer – The Sun

WE may well be seeing lower slug and snail numbers this summer thanks to colder weather in winter and the recent dry spells.

But mother nature never makes it easy for us. Instead – of course – there’s a new pest in town.

Aphids on a dandelion stem.

RHS members have found aphids to be the biggest problem this yearCredit: Getty

Adam Woolcott told Sun Gardening how to get rid of garden pestsCredit: Supplied

Aphid levels have rocketed this year – and the RHS reckons it’s top of the list of gardening queries to their hotline.

There’s over 500 different species found in the UK – and can be red, yellow, black, green, brown or pink.

They feed by sucking sap from plants – and can cause severe damage – including distorted growth, sooty mould and plant viruses – and sometimes plant death.

Chelsea award winning gardener Adam Woolcott – and Webb ambassador – gave Sun Gardening some top tips on how to tackle the most common early summer pests.

APHIDS

Physically remove the aphids from the stems and leaves.
Use natural insecticidal soaps.
Blast off with water jets.
Encourage predators such as ladybirds, lacewings, and hoverflies

VINE WEEVIL

Both the adult vine weevil beetles and their larvae cause damage.
Adults — all female — chew distinctive ‘U-shaped’ notches in leaves, particularly on evergreen shrubs like rhododendrons, escallonias, and viburnums.
Underground: larvae feed on plant roots and can kill container plants like Heucheras.
Remove adults at night when they’re most active
Break the life cycle with biological controls such as nematodes (apply in spring and autumn when grubs are active) Chemical treatments are a last resort, but offer longer-term control

LILY BEETLE

The bright red beetles and their larvae are both covered in their excrement. They can strip a plant in days, affecting flowering and bulb health.

Remove beetles by hand where practical
Encourage wildlife into the garden. Birds and ground beetles will eat the larvae
Grow a resistant variety.
Tolerate some damage if you can — total eradication isn’t always necessary.

CATERPILLARS

Especially troublesome in veg patches. Cabbage white butterfly caterpillars love brassicas, while box tree caterpillars are spreading rapidly across the UK, stripping foliage as they go.

Remove the caterpillars by hand if you can and destroy any badly affected plants (if practical) to stop the infestation from spreading.
Use biological sprays like nematodes.
In some cases, hot water and a mild detergent can help. Ecover is on sale at Dunelm for £2.45.
As a last resort, chemical controls can be effective

Top tips, Gardening news, and a competition to win a £250 lawnmower

NEWS KING Charles made a surprise visit to Windsor Flower Show last Saturday. Celebrities including Alex Jones and Kirsty Gallacher were at the one-day show – which had wonderful village fair vibes, vegetable and cake competitions and fantastic floral displays.

TOP TIP JUNE is actually a good time to take Hydrangea cuttings – and get your own plants for free. They’ll have produced some soft green growth – which is what you want. Choose healthy, non flowering shoots that are 10-15cm long and cut just below the node (the leaf joint). Don’t collect cuttings from plants with leaves that are turning brown. And try to collect in the morning if you can.
Remove the lower leaves – leaving just one or two at the top.
Then dip the end in rooting powder or gel – then pop it straight in a pot. You could splash out on seeding and cutting compost – but multi purpose will do – just add a bit of grit or perlite. Then keep them out of direct sunlight and keep moist. They should have rooted within about a month.

NEWS A RARE ‘sheep-eating’ South American plant has flowered in an English primary school for the first time. The Puya Chilensis, with its iconic spike pattern, is normally found in the Andes in Chile. But after it was planted 10 years ago by school horticulturalist Louise Moreton, it has sent out a 10ft spike at Wicor Primary School in Portchester, Hants. It’s called a Sheep Catcher as it would normally entangle wildlife, hold onto it – and then when the animal died – would take the nutrients. Ms Moreton said it was exciting but a worrying sign of global warming.

WIN! Keep your lawn looking its best this summer by winning a Webb Classic Self Propelled Petrol Lawn Mower worth £249.99. To enter visit www.thesun.co.uk/WEBBCOMP or write to Sun Webb competition, PO Box 3190, Colchester, Essex, CO2 8GP. Include your name, age, email or phone. UK residents 18+ only. Entries close 11.59pm. July 5, 2025. T&Cs apply.

TOP TIP IF you want to get more flowers from your sedums (now called Hylotelephiums) and prevent them from collapsing – pinch them out around now. Pinch off around four sets of leaves down – which will make them bushier.

JOB OF THE WEEK Weeds thrive this month – keep on top of them by hoeing. Tie in sweet peas, and give your plants a good feed – liquid seaweed feed is great – and Tomorite works with nearly everything. Give agapanthus a high-potash feed every couple of weeks.

Eight major law and technology changes being brought in for Club World Cup including ref cams and ‘Arteta rule’

NEW Laws and new tech – meaning the Club World Cup will look unlike any football tournament we’ve seen before.

Fifa has decided to bring in all the Law tweaks agreed at the International FA Board meeting in Belfast in February for their new flagship.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal manager, holding a Champions League ball.

That means the “five second countdown”, with referees raising their hand to tell goalkeepers to release the ball or see a corner awarded to the opposing team.

The latest live trials, in South America’s Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, saw just TWO incidents where the glovemen exceeded the maximum eight seconds with the ball “under control”.

Fifa will also enforce the “captain’s only” rule for talking to referees, with yellow cards for any players who offend.

The so-called “Arteta rule”, meaning no further punishment other than an indirect free-kick if coaches or substitutes accidentally touch the ball before it goes out of play, will also be invoked for the first time.

As will a new penalty rule, where “double touches” – players unintentionally hitting the ball against their own foot or leg – will bring a retake if the spot kick is converted, rather than being disallowed.

But just as eye-opening will be the technology applied for the first time in competitive play, as Fifa pushes new barriers.

The biggest will be using the latest, AI-aided semi-automated offside technology, where a signal will automatically go to the assist referee when a player breaking the defensive line and more than just four INCHES offside plays the ball.

Rugby fans have become used to “ref cams”, attached to the official’s chest and giving an intimate view of scrums.

But Ifab approved football to go down the same path, with the cameras at eye level, attached to the referee’s VAR communication device.

While “live” shots will not be broadcast during play, they will be available to give fans, both at home and in stadiums, the chance to see goals and other incidents from the ref’s perspective.

Bayern Munich leave in new kit for Club World Cup

Conversations between refs and VARs can still only be broadcast after a match has finished but supporters inside the grounds will be able to view the images for pitchside monitor reviews at the same time as the officials themselves.

And there will be no excuses for messed-up substitutions, with coaching teams handed a tablet to input player changes directly, rather than having to hand written notes to the fourth official.

Layering up in the bedroom is key

However, property expert Liv Conlon – who stages homes for a living – has shared her essential 10 tips for boosting value.

And some cost just pennies but can had hundreds to the asking price.

Liv, 26, is the CEO of multi-award-winning ThePropertyStagers.co.uk, which furnishes more than 400 homes a year, as well as a StagerBoss – a coaching business teaching other women how to do the same.

The Scots mum, who was brought up in Glasgow and now lives in Marbella with son Cash and mum Ali, says: “From posh pillows to hotel-style bedding, the right styling can make buyers fall in love and nudge them above the asking price.

“So before you stick up the For Sale sign, check out these smart, simple ways to get buyers battling to pay more than the asking price.”

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

A buyer decides in 10 seconds whether they are going to buy your home or not – so your entrance and hallway need to make a good first impression.

Make it warm and welcoming. Buy a new door mat that’s only used for viewings, with no dirty shoe marks, and place two identical plants at either side of the door – which is either clean, new or given a lick of paint. Opt for colours such as black or navy blue so it looks ‘classy’, rather than something more ‘out there’.

Clear away the clutter, and lose the smelly shoes and dumped coats.

LIVING ROOM VISION

The living room is the heart of the home – and buyers know it. It’s where they picture relaxing with a glass of wine, watching TV, or hosting friends.

Teachers told me I was runing my life leaving school at 16, now I run a seven-figure business

Get this room wrong and you risk turning off even the most interested buyer. Make it feel spacious but not sterile, styled but still homely.

Pull sofas away from the walls to create cosy conversation zones, and use a large rug to anchor the space – this helps define it and adds warmth.

Then ditch harsh overhead lights and go for soft lamps, layered lighting and oversized accessories to give a sense of luxury. Use neutral tones for your sofa and walls, then add depth with textured throws, scatter cushions and artwork.

GO BIG

Tiny trinkets and dinky lamps really don’t cut it when you’re trying to wow a buyer. One of the biggest styling mistakes sellers make is going too small with their accessories – it makes your home look underwhelming.

5

Go big with accessories

If you want to create that lux, showhome feel, size matters. Think
big and bold. Oversized lamps on side tables make a dramatic statement, especially when paired with plush sofas or layered cushions.

Chunky candlesticks, large framed art or statement vases add instant impact – and make the space feel styled, not stuffed.

DON’T LOO-SE OUT

Bathrooms are an important room but are often forgotten about when it comes to staging. The key to success with styling this room is to compliment not clutter.

You can do this by adding simple styling accessories, layers and textures. Consider pops of colour in your accessories, such as a soap dispenser or a toothbrush holder, which you can pick up for as little as £3 in places like Home Bargains. This draws the eye and helps your images jump off the page.

5

Don’t forget to add a pop of colour in the bathroom

Add textures with towels and bath mats, but also through the type of glass or ceramic in your accessories. Small touches can have a big impact.

RIGHT RUG

Rugs are the unsung heroes of home staging – they define spaces, add texture and instantly warm up any room. In large, open-plan layouts, rugs create natural boundaries between living,
dining and kitchen zones, making the space feel organised and inviting.

Don’t overlook the ‘forgotten’ spaces – utility rooms, hallways or entryways can be transformed with a well-chosen rug to feel cosy and purposeful.

Rugs can tie together the design elements, especially through colour and texture, in a space while providing a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

They can also significantly reduce noise levels by absorbing sound – a quieter home is always more appealing to buyers.

ALL WHITE

Five-star hotels use crisp, white bedding for a reason, as it exudes luxury and cleanliness, and it immediately puts a viewer at ease.

Patterned or busy linens can feel cluttered and overly personal, turning off potential buyers. Investing in high-quality, bright white sheets creates a serene, spa-like oasis that invites buyers to imagine themselves unwinding there.

The clean, neutral backdrop also lets you introduce pops of colour and texture with cushions and throws – easy updates that make the room feel stylish without overwhelming the senses.

GET DRESSED

Layering is the secret to making your home feel styled, warm and high-end – without overdoing it.

In the bedroom, start with white sheets, then double up on duvets: one laid flat, the second folded neatly at the end for a boutique hotel look. Use feather insert cushions -not flat polyfills – and build texture with velvet throws, faux fur or quilted finishes.

In the living room, mix cushion sizes and textures on your sofa – linen, boucle, chunky knit – to add depth. Coffee tables and
sideboards should be styled too: think a stack of hardback books, a sculptural candle and one standout vase. Keep it intentional, not cluttered.

STAR OF THE SHOW

Not much beats getting ready at a dressing table. The feeling of space and time – rather than catching a quick glimpse in the closet mirror before rushing out the front door.

Create that same feeling in your bedroom by setting up a designated space in your bedroom to put on make-up and style your hair.

This can be a dual purpose area that could also double up as a work from home space too. To add real luxury, add a table standing mirror, and opt for a mirrored dressing table if your budget allows.

CLEAR OFF

Nothing puts buyers off faster than clutter. It makes rooms feel smaller and chaotic. When people view your home, they’re not just looking at the space – they’re imagining their life in it.

That’s hard to do if every surface is piled high with post, toys or toiletries. Start by stripping back.

Clear kitchen worktops, bedside tables and bathroom counters. Invest in clever storage: ottomans with lift-up lids, under-bed boxes and baskets for toys or blankets.

Hide away anything personal or bulky. Less stuff equals more space.

MIRROR IMAGE

Create symmetry in your rooms with matching bedside tables on either side of the bed. Not only does this add practicality and storage, but it instantly makes the room feel more polished.

Then, top each table with oversized, identical lamps – these create drama and a high-end vibe without breaking the bank.

Symmetry tricks the eye into seeing order and elegance, making your
bedroom feel like a five-star retreat buyers won’t forget.

How to save on your supermarket shop

THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.

You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.

If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.

Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.

Tourists’ most expensive mistakes abroad including paying £30 for a can of Coke

A poll of 2,000 travellers found three in 10 felt they have often paid more for something on holiday because they were a tourist

Brits have found themselves overpaying for a variety of things on holiday(Image: Getty Images)

Holidaymakers have shared some of the priciest purchases they have unintentionally made while abroad. A survey of 2,000 travellers revealed that three in 10 felt they had often been charged more for items on holiday due to their tourist status. One unlucky holidaymaker shelled out £30 for a single glass of Coca-Cola in Rome, while another unsuspectingly bought a T-shirt for £80, believing it was only £10.

Other surprising expenses reported by respondents included paying a staggering £48 for a single shot of whiskey. Another person spent £25 on a taxi ride in Amsterdam, only to discover their destination was less than a mile away.

The study, conducted by the Post Office, indicated that travellers frequently struggle with ‘currency confusion’ – becoming muddled about the value of money ‘in pounds’ when they are away. This has resulted in a quarter of people paying more than they anticipated for an item.

The most common currency conversion for Brits, changing to euros, also baffled respondents, with nearly a third unsure of how much £5 would equate to in Euros. Moreover, 40% were in the dark about the conversion rate for dollars.

According to the survey, four out of ten try to calculate local currency rates in their heads, while 6% will ask someone nearby and then take their word for it.

Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, commented: “Our research reveals many travellers overestimate their ability to mentally convert currencies on the go, and that can lead to overspending. We wanted to highlight how easily confusion around exchange rates can impact holiday budgets – no one wants to waste time abroad worrying about money. “

The study was commissioned to promote the Post Office’s Travel Money Card, as well as their Travel App which allows holidaymakers to check exchange rates and monitor spending in real time.

Currently, 17% rely on conversion apps to work out how much they are spending. “It’s surprising that only 19% of travellers use a prepaid travel card for their spending abroad when it can allow travellers to lock in a good rate before travelling,” Laura said.

Meanwhile, 49% utilise a separate card not connected to their primary bank account for overseas spending in an effort to safeguard their ‘main funds’ from fraudsters or thieves.

Laura further stated: “Nothing disrupts a holiday like a financial mishap. Keeping your travel money separate from your main account is a smart move to give you greater control, clearer visibility of what you’re spending.

“Whether you’re budgeting carefully or just want to avoid mixing travel purchases with everyday costs, this small step can make a big difference to your trip.”

All the benefits that could be STOPPED over easy holiday mistake including Universal Credit and PIP

A SIMPLE holiday error could see a host of benefits including Universal Credit and PIP stopped.

You may even have to pay back any overpaid money and in a worse case scenario an up to £5,000 penalty too.

1

A number of benefits can be stopped if you don’t report going abroadCredit: Alamy

Going abroad is classed as a change in circumstances which must be reported to the office that pays your benefits.

If you do not, it may be reduced or stopped and you could be told to pay back any overpaid amounts.

If you are found to have deliberately not reported going abroad, it is classed as benefit fraud and you could be taken to court or asked to pay a penalty of between £350 and £5,000.

However, at which point you have to report going abroad varies based on the benefit you are receiving.

For example, you don’t have to report going abroad if you’re on Attendance Allowance (AA) and going away for less than four weeks.

If you do need to report going abroad, you need to tell your local Jobcentre Plus or the office that pays your benefit.

This is the full list of benefits where you may have to report going abroad this summer:

  • Universal Credit
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • PIP
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP)
  • Maternity Allowance
  • Child Benefit
  • Guardian’s Allowance

Here are the rules on reporting going abroad for the major benefits.

Universal Credit

If you’re on Universal Credit, you can stay abroad for one month and carry on receiving payments.

You still have to tell your work coach you’re going away and have to carry on meeting the conditions of your claim.

For example, if you are in the intensive work group and have to spend a minimum amount of hours per week looking for a job, you have to continue doing this.

There are exceptions to the one-month rule though – such as if a “close relative” dies while you are abroad and it is not deemed reasonable for you to return to the UK.

Meanwhile, you can carry on claiming Universal Credit for up to six months if you have gone abroad for medical treatment.

You can report going away on holiday by signing in via your Universal Credit account.

Jobseeker’s Allowance

If you are on New Style or income-based JSA you must report if you are leaving Great Britain for any length of time.

You can let the Government know you are going away by calling the JSA helpline on 0800 169 0310.

You can also write to the Jobcentre Plus office that pays your JSA.

You can find your nearest office by using its online branch locator.

PIP and DLA

You have to tell the DWP if you are on Personal Independence payments (PIP) Or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and going away for more than four weeks.

You have to tell the Government the date you are leaving the country, how long you are going away for and which country you plan to visit.

You also need to tell the DWP why you plan to go abroad.

You can call the Disability Service Centre on 0800 121 4433 to inform them you are going away if you are on PIP or DLA.

Attendance Allowance

Like with PIP and DLA, you have to tell the DWP if you plan to go abroad for more than four weeks and are on AA.

You can claim AA for up to 13 weeks while abroad, or 26 weeks if you’re going away for medical treatment.

Carer’s Allowance

If you are on Carer’s Allowance, you can go away for up to four weeks over a six-month period while still receiving the benefit.

But you still have to report this or risk having to pay back your entitlement or paying a fine.

You can report going away via the Government’s website or by calling the Carer’s Allowance Unit on 0800 731 0297.

Pension Credit

You can claim Pension Credit for up to four weeks if you are abroad.

This is extended to eight weeks if the absence is due to the death of your partner or a child.

However, you still need to report going abroad.

You can do this via the Government’s website or by calling the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 731 0469.

Housing Benefit

You can usually only carry on claiming Housing Benefit for up to four weeks if you go abroad.

Like with Pension Credit, you can carry on receiving it for eight weeks if you have to go abroad because a close relative has died.

But you should contact the Benefits Service on 020 7364 5000 to let them know you’re going away.

You might also be able to via your local council’s website. You can find your local council by using the Government’s online locator tool.

If you love bargains and want to protect the environment, then there are other schemes that are worth checking out. Good Journey is a not-for-profit, sustainable travel company that is trying to change the way the world travels.

Championing car-free leisure travel across the UK, the independent organisation founded by Nat Taplin launched in 2018, with the support of a coalition of conservation and transport organisations. Good Journey actively promotes green travel and is built on the ethos of widening sustainable visitor travel across the UK and to broaden access to culture, heritage and leisure to everyone — not just those with a car.

According to Good Journey, around half of all CO2 emissions from tourist attractions come from visitors’ cars. Getting more visitors to arrive by bus, train, bike, or foot is therefore key to cutting those carbon emissions. The non-profit organization also hopes to open up access for the 22 percent of UK households without a car (roughly 15 million people).

The Good Journey website currently features more than 500 attractions across England, Wales and Scotland that you can reach car-free, each with detailed travel instructions and a door-to-door journey planner to the point where whether walking routes have pavements or even bus shelters to take refuge if it’s raining, are pointed out.

Available kid’s activities, places for shelter in case of bad weather, and views to look out for on your walk or train ride are also meticulously pointed out. The website can be used to search for discounted train tickets and quieter cycling routes as well.

Israel kills more than 70 in Gaza, including 16 in bombing family building | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Israeli raids across Gaza have killed at least 75 Palestinians, with rescuers scrambling to find dozens of bodies under the rubble after the bombing of a residential building in Gaza City described by the enclave’s civil defence as a “full-fledged massacre”.

Palestinian Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Basel told Al Jazeera that the military gave “no warning, no alert” before Saturday’s strike on the house in the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City that left at least 16 people dead, including women and children.

“This is truly a full-fledged massacre … a building full of civilians,” said Basel, who added that approximately 85 people were believed to be trapped under the rubble.

“We woke up to the strikes, destruction, yelling, rocks hitting us,” said Hamed Keheel, a displaced Palestinian at the site, noting that the attack had taken place on the second day of the Eid al-Adha festival.

“This is the occupation,” he said. “Instead of waking up to cheer our children and dress them up to enjoy Eid, we wake up to carry women and children’s bodies from under rubble.”

Local resident Hassan Alkhor told Al Jazeera that the building belonged to the Abu Sharia family. “May God hold the Israeli forces and [Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu accountable,” he said.

The Israeli military said afterwards that it had killed Asaad Abu Sharia, the leader of the Mujahideen Brigades, who it claimed had participated in the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel in 2023, according to a report in the Times of Israel published Saturday.

Hamas confirmed the killing in a statement shared on Telegram, saying that Abu Sharia’s brother, Ahmed Abu Sharia, had also been assassinated in the attack, which it said was “part of a series of brutal massacres against civilians”.

‘A handful of rice for our starving children’

Also on Saturday, Israeli forces killed at least eight Palestinians waiting near an aid distribution site run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in southern Gaza’s Rafah, the latest in a series of deadly incidents around the group’s operations that have killed 118 people and left others missing in less than two weeks.

Gaza resident Samir Abu Hadid told the AFP news agency that thousands of people had gathered at the al-Alam roundabout near the aid site.

“As soon as some people tried to advance towards the aid centre, the Israeli [forces] opened fire from armoured vehicles stationed near the centre, firing into the air and then at civilians,” Abu Hadid said.

One woman told Al Jazeera her husband had been killed in the attack after going to the aid point to get “a handful of rice for our starving children”.

“He said he felt he was walking towards death, I begged him not to leave. He insisted to find anything to feed our children,” she said.

The GHF, a shadowy United States-backed private group engaged by Israel to distribute aid under the protection of its troops and security contractors, began operations in late May, replacing existing networks run by the United Nations and charities that have worked for decades.

Critics say the group does not abide by humanitarian principles of neutrality, claiming that its operations weaponise aid, serving Israel’s stated aims of ethnically cleansing large swaths of Gaza and controlling the entire enclave.

GHF said on Saturday that it was unable to distribute any humanitarian relief because Hamas issued “direct threats” against its operations. “These threats made it impossible to proceed today without putting innocent lives at risk,” it said in a statement. Hamas told the Reuters news agency that it had no knowledge of these “alleged threats”.

The United Nations, which has refused to cooperate with the GHF, has warned that most of Gaza’s 2.3 million population is at risk of famine after an 11-week Israeli blockade, with the rate of young children suffering from acute malnutrition nearly tripling.

‘Lost future generation’

As Israel continued its attacks amid the looming famine, it emerged that health authorities had recorded more than 300 miscarriages over an 80-day period in the enclave.

Expectant mothers face an increased risk of miscarriage and premature births, with basic medical supplies such as iron supplements and prenatal vitamins impossible to obtain.

Brenda Kelly, a consultant obstetrician at Oxford University Hospital, told Al Jazeera that Gaza was “losing a future generation of children”, alluding to a “staggering rise” in stillbirths, miscarriages and pre-term births.

“What we’re seeing now is the direct fallout of Israel’s weaponising of hunger in Gaza – impacting babies’ growth and growth restriction is one of the leading causes of miscarriages and stillbirth,” she said.

Severe malnutrition among pregnant women is compounded by severe stress and psychological trauma, as well as repeated displacement and a lack of safe shelter, she said.

Those babies that do survive face heightened health risks. “We know that famine experienced in-utero has lifelong consequences for children who then go into adulthood with much higher risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, as well as mental health disorders,” she said.

Israeli attacks on Gaza kill 34 people, including several near aid site | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Medical sources say eight killed in a shooting incident near an aid distribution site west of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Israeli attacks have killed at least 34 Palestinians across Gaza, medical sources told Al Jazeera, as a key hospital in the south of the besieged enclave said it was inaccessible amid ongoing Israeli military operations.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said on Saturday that al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis was “no longer accessible” after Israeli forces designated the surrounding area a “dangerous combat zone” and ordered evacuations.

“There are many patients and medical staff in the hospital,” the group said in a statement, urging international organisations to intervene, provide protection for medical sites, and open safe corridors for aid and medical supplies.

The plea comes as medical sources told Al Jazeera that 34 people were killed in Israeli attacks on Saturday, including eight who were killed in a shooting incident near an aid distribution site west of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Palestinians in Gaza have gathered at al-Alam roundabout near Rafah almost daily since late May to collect humanitarian aid, at a centre about 1km (0.6 miles) away, operated by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

Samir Abu Hadid, who was there early Saturday, told the AFP news agency that thousands of people had gathered near the roundabout.

“As soon as some people tried to advance towards the aid centre, the Israeli occupation forces opened fire from armoured vehicles stationed near the centre, firing into the air and then at civilians,” Abu Hadid said.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

The GHF had said on Friday that its aid centres would remain closed until further notice due to security concerns, just days after several deadly incidents near its aid hubs.

“Operations at our distribution points have been paused until further notice,” a spokesperson for the GHF said on Friday, despite warnings from humanitarian agencies that the territory is on the brink of famine.

Israel last month partially lifted a total blockade on humanitarian supplies entering Gaza that had been in effect since March 2, but rights groups and the United Nations have warned that only a trickle of aid has been allowed into the territory.

The UN, which has refused to cooperate with the GHF over neutrality concerns, has warned that Gaza’s entire population of more than two million people was at risk of starvation.

In Israel, Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the military had recovered the remains of Thai national Nattapong Pinta from Rafah, southern Gaza.

Pinta, an agricultural worker, was seized during the Hamas-led assault on October 7, 2023, from Kibbutz Nir Oz. Israeli officials said he had been held by the Mujahideen Brigades, a Palestinian armed group.

His remains were found alongside those of two Israeli American captives retrieved earlier in the week. Pinta’s family in Thailand has been notified.

All the shops closing this weekend including iconic department store shutting after 124 years

A HOST of stores are shutting for good this weekend including a historic department store.

Retailers have struggled over recent years as shoppers’ wallets and purses take a hit from high inflation.

An increase in employer National Insurance contributions and wage costs since April has added to the pressure.

Combined with soaring business rates, energy and rental costs, some retailers have been forced to hike prices and even shut stores.

It’s worth bearing in mind of course that retailers close shops for a host of reasons and not always because of a poor economic backdrop.

Sometimes chains will shut a poorly-performing branch in one area and open another further afield where they think they’ll see better footfall.

Read more on Store Closures

Plenty of retailers are moving away from high streets and towards out-of-town retail parks too.

In any case, five shops will shut this weekend including a more than 120-year-old department store.

Here is the full list of shops we know are closing down permanently.

Ginger

Norwich-based Ginger will pull down its shutters for the final time on Saturday.

The shop was founded by David and Rodger Kingsley in 1978 following the success of their sister company Jonathan Trumbull in 1971.

But current store manager Beckie Kingsley said the store will close due to the economic climate and aftermath of Covid-19.

Britain’s retail apocalypse: why your favourite stores KEEP closing down

She said: “It’s with truly heavy hearts that, after 46 unforgettable years, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to close the doors at our beautiful, beloved and historic Timber Hill home.

“We’ve weathered many storms over the decades, but there’s been ongoing challenges of today’s financial climate – coupled with the lasting impact and huge shifts within the retail landscape since Covid.

“This led us to ask – does it still work for us? After deep reflection, the answer, sadly, is no.”

Daniel of Ealing

Historic department store Daniel of Ealing, in London, will shut for good on Sunday, after opening 124 years ago.

Prices have been slashed across homeware, fashion, toys, sportswear and shoes, with up to 50% off.

Shoppers finding out the iconic shop will close have shared their dismay online.

One posted saying: “Loved this shop and it’s top floor restaurant.”

While another added: “Ealing has lost its heart, soul and uniqueness!”

The Works

Stationer The Works is shutting its Margate store on Sunday, with shoppers’ next nearest branches in Westwood Cross Shopping Centre or Ramsgate Garden Centre.

A spokesperson for the chain said the decision to shut the branch had been made “as part of ongoing plans to optimise our store portfolio”.

The move has been met with sadness by shoppers, with one online stating: “No I love The Works.”

Another dejectedly added: “Be nothing left in the town soon.”

Emporium Worthing

Independent bar and shop Emporium Worthing is closing to the public on Sunday “with a heavy heart”.

The owners posted a lengthy statement on Facebook announcing the closure.

It said: “We share the challenging decision to close Emporium Worthing after five memorable years of serving you.

“This has been a tough choice for us, but after careful reflection, we believe it is the best path forward and the right choice for us at this time.”

A huge closing down sale has been launched to clear stock, even including fixtures and fittings from inside.

It’s not all bad news though as the Emporium will be moving online and selling hardwares.

New Look

New Look is closing its branch in the Northfield Shopping Centre, Birmingham, on June 8.

A picture recently posted on Facebook of the shop window advertised the closure and signposted customers to the retailer’s website.

Customers finding out about the closure have been left gutted.

One posted on Facebook: “Will soon be a ghost town, absolutely nothing left.”

Another commented: “Online (retail) is killing shops.”

A New Look spokesperson said: “We would like to thank all of our colleagues and the local community for their support over the years.

“We hope customers continue to shop with us online at newlook.com, where our full product ranges can be found.”

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025

The British Retail Consortium predicted that the Treasury’s hike to employer NICs would cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

Research published by the British Chambers of Commerce earlier this year shows that more than half of companies planned to raise prices by early April.

Separately, the Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.”

Incredible private islands you can only visit on a cruise including a Disney island

Cruise lines have their own private islands for guests to enjoy – take a look at four seriously bucket list-worthy destinations you’ll want on your radar

The appeal of cruise holidays has traditionally focused on visiting a wide variety of places. But an increasing number of firms are choosing to drop anchor at exclusive destinations in idyllic locations.

Private island stops are becoming a highlight of itineraries, with big players investing heavily in castaway cays reserved for their guests. Holland America Line, part of the Carnival Group, recently revealed a revamp of their popular Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

A new pier will allow more ships to dock at the destination – soon to be named RelaxAway island, hinting at the investment planned for more laid back leisure facilities.

Other lines have equally big ideas. Expanding beyond The Bahamas – where most island escapes have been based to date – Royal Caribbean is hoping to develop a new Perfect Day project in Mexico (due to open in 2027), while MSC has announced plans for an Abu Dhabi private island experience in the Middle East. And why not? – discovering a secret island is, after all, the stuff of childhood dreams.

Here are some of the fantasy islands where it’s already possible to set sail.

Great Stirrup Cay, The Bahamas

READ MORE: Beautiful seaside village ‘rivals Maldives’ with clear waters and white beaches

In 1977, this was the first island to be bought by a company solely for their guests. Norwegian Cruise Line has built a resort with bars and restaurants over the years and there are still more developments to come in the 268-acre tropical oasis.

You can book guided snorkelling tours around a marine sanctuary, or rent equipment for parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and jet skiing. For families, there’s an aqua park with inflatable water obstacles.

Labadee, Haiti

Royal Caribbean has invested in a private patch of a peninsula on the northern coast of Cuba’s neighbour, Haiti. Set against plunging coastal cliffs, a choice of beaches ranges from the peaceful Columbus Cove to the livelier Adrenaline Beach.

For thrill-seekers, there’s a chance to jump on a roller coaster or try the world’s longest overwater zip line. Unlike many private locations, interactions with local communities are possible at an artisan market and a cultural programme highlighting Haitian history and traditions is in the works.

Despite its popularity, the edgy destination is marred by unrest. Recently, stops were temporarily suspended due to “an abundance of caution” although it’s hoped they will resume in the future.

Around 30 miles north of NCL’s private paradise is Disney’s answer to a magical far-flung tropical kingdom. Although there are currently no Pirates of the Caribbean in this Atlantic cay, secluded coves were once used by the likes of Blackbeard in the 18th century.

During the US Prohibition, the island served as a smuggling base and in the 1970s its airstrips were used by drug runners. A £18.5million investment transformed it in the mid-1990s, including a channel allowing ships to dock. Expect themed environments and areas dedicated to different age groups, including the adults-only Serenity Bay.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Carnival Corporation invested £63million to develop this site near Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic’s northern coast. Princess Cruises and Holland America guests can visit, following in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus who landed here in 1492. Extending from a hillside, zip lines traverse the port complex and there’s a 25,000 square-foot pool area with a swim-up bar, water slides, and private cabanas. The island is part of the mainland, but the private area has a big advantage over island escapes when it comes to exploring and interacting with communities.

Inside Man Utd’s ‘stag do’ Far East tour including clashes with fans, player protests and humiliating open-top bus trip

MANCHESTER UNITED endured a nightmare post-season tour in Asia including an embarrassing on-pitch display, a humiliating bus parade and unhappy players.

Following the club’s horror season, the decision to play two matches in the Far East to generate some extra cash was not a decision popular in the club.

The club’s commercial activities saw them participating in a humiliating bus parade

In fact, according to the Manchester Evening News, when the squad learned of that decision a delegation was sent to the club’s football leadership on behalf of the first team to express their dismay.

Some of the squad were said to be outright “fuming” about having to go on the six-day tour after a 60-game season, though with commercial duties taking up much of the agenda the trip effectively became a four-day event.

Players were said to be concerned about having to cancel holiday plans, including one who complained about being forced to cancel a family trip scheduled for the half-term week.

Club chiefs made a concession by bringing the departure time of their Malaysia flight forwards to Sunday evening, hour following the final game of the season against Aston Villa, after learning some players might try to “cry off” the 14,150-mile round trip to Malaysia.

However, the actual mood in the camp on tour was said to be a better than anticipated despite the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Some commercial player events including fan meet-and-greets are said to have taken up to two hours to complete as the local supporters lapped up the chance to see Man Utd in the flesh, including on the humiliating open-top bus parade which happened in Kuala Lumpur before the first friendly against ASEAN All-Stars.

Kit makers Adidas hosted a nocturnal poolside party at the W Hotel – where they stayed as part of their link with club sponsor, Marriott – following the 1-0 defeat to the All-Stars.

Several guests are said to have attended the meeting, with many “admiring” the view of the Petronas Twin Towers in the background.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

That came after players were said to have been using gallows humour on the team bus back to the hotel, which had followed some booing from fans there.

The rules on tour were more relaxed than a pre-season tour would be and players were given permission to head out on their first night in the city, with one star allegedly half-joking the trip would be “like a stag do”.

Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho show middle finger to fans during Man Utd’s post-season tour in Malaysia

However, while some were tempted to go out into the city to enjoy the night, a senior star instead advised them to stay in.

Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Ayden Heaven were seen out on e-scooters, which had to be paid for by fans, while Joshua Zirkzee opted to enjoy some Thai take-out with a security guard after not being impressed by the room service options.

Club staff were also able to let their hair down in the trip, with some enjoying drinks on the 14-hour flight to the Malaysian capital.

On the eighth floor of the hotel itself there was a vending machine which dispensed £40 mini bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne.

The second leg of the tour saw them go to Hong Kong, but they were barely in the country 36 hours following an early-morning flight which then saw them spend an hour in their second W Hotel for lunch before getting on the team bus for training.

Despite the glitz and glam of the 5-star establishment, things were sour away from the hotel with Amad and Garnacho seen gesturing their middle fingers towards fans and the latter doing so towards a club camerman.

Amad later revealed he had been subjected to insults about his mother from some fans.

Meanwhile, Garnacho – on the tour after being told to “pray” he finds a new club following a public dressing down in front of team-mates by Ruben Amorim – did the gesture without any clear provocation.

The 20-year-old was involved in a fan altercation while out in the city as the fan seemed to invade his personal space and also looked very unbothered during a shirt signing event.

He was described as “surly” during the trip, with club staff shadowing him closely as he signed shirts and posed for pictures without ever breaking into a smile.

The Argentine was one of the last to board to team bus after the All Stars defeat and donned sunglasses as he ignored requests in the mixed zone.

One eyewitness claimed he removed his shades after getting through the packed pen, while Amorim later chuckled in a press conference when a reporter asked if there was any chance of Garnacho staying at the club.

Amorim, 40, is said to have told a colleague about how exhausting the post-season tour had been, especially in the humidity of Malaysia.

Man Utd finished their tour by beating Hong Kong 3-1 off a brace from Chido Obi and a late header from Ayden Heaven.

The club lifted the Defining Education Challenge Cup as a result of the win, but the trophy was so undervalued that a press officer carried it back to the dressing room.

In the first game back in Kuala Lumpur, Man Utd stars had been delayed in collecting their silver medals when the referee and linesman had returned to the dressing room before being called back out.

All in all the tour was estimated to generate around £10million for the club – which should at least leave the club’s financial department a little happier- although you would imagine a post-season tour next year may not be on the cards.

After the break a pre-season tour in Chicago is next, which is when the real work begins.

Real reason Oasis reunited – and it’s all down to woman who has already picked the setlist including rarely heard hits

IT is the biggest reunion in rock – but Oasis’s comeback may not have happened at all if it hadn’t been for some delicate, behind-the-scenes diplomacy by one particular person.

Step forward Anais Gallagher, Noel’s eldest daughter, who has been revealed as the gutsy go-between who has seemingly pulled off what years of fan pleading and big-money offers failed to do.

And the plucky model has even had a hand in helping shape the band’s set list, by providing crucial insight into what the Mancunian legendsGen-Z fans might want to hear on the 41-date reunion tour.

The Sun can reveal that Anais, who is from Noel’s first marriage to Meg Mathews, worked tirelessly to reconcile her dad and uncle following Noel’s split from Sara MacDonald.

So Anais, 25, figured the breakdown of her dad’s marriage could be an opportunity to get her old man back together with his feisty brother and the band that made him a megastar.

An insider said: “Anais was one of the biggest sources of comfort and support for Noel following his divorce.

“She was the one that was helping him get back on his feet and return to doing things he loved that had fallen by the wayside.

“Over the years, Noel had offered an olive branch to Liam, but he’d never taken it up.

“Anais could tell her dad really wanted both his brothers, Liam and Paul, by his side after the split so was determined to get them back in touch.

Fighting with Noel

“She gets on great with Liam’s sons Gene and Lennon so she asked them if their dad would be willing to hear her out.

“They said they thought he would be receptive, so she then asked Liam to reach out to his brother to lend support.

“Liam’s always wanted Oasis back together so he got in touch.”

Inside Noel & Liam Gallagher’s first Oasis show in 16 years at surprise venue where they enraged neighbour

Ironically, the Wonderwall crooners fell out back in May 2000 because Liam allegedly questioned the paternity of Anais while fighting with Noel in Spain — leading Noel to leave the band for a second time.

Anais has maintained a close relationship with outspoken Liam, who is saved in her phone as “uncle”.

Anais, who has modelled for Dolce and Gabbana, is close friends with her cousins Gene, 23, and Lennon, 25, and the group often go on nights out together.

Anais was one of the biggest sources of comfort and support for Noel following his divorce

Insider

Fans had hoped Noel’s divorce would lead to a reconciliation for the band, but they were left hanging for more than a year.

The source said: “It was all very slow-going behind the scenes to get the brothers talking again.

“Anais spending so much time with her dad allowed her to realise how much he missed his brother, despite  the jibes they both made.

“It enabled her to plant the idea of a reconciliation on both sides. Thanks to her close relationship with Liam, she was able to call him.

“She worked hard to make sure they didn’t look back in anger, if you like.

“Once Liam called Noel, the rest was left up to them.”

The brothers announced their reunion in August last year, sparking a frenzy as  fans went into overdrive to get their hands on tickets.

It’s expected that the band will make millions from their world tour, which kicks off in July.

And in further good news for Liam, he is about to become a grandfather for the first time.

His daughter Molly Moorish, 27,  announced two weeks ago she was expecting her first child with Liverpool  footballer boyfriend Nathaniel Phillips.

Molly, whose mother Lisa had a short-lived relationship with Liam in 1998, was estranged from her dad for 19 years but they are reconciled.

In interviews, Anais said: “With my family, what you see is what you get. They are really hard-working people.

“With my dad, I would always go to him for help or advice — it’s very funny that a rock star from the 90s is like the most level-headed person I know.

“He’s definitely the guiding force in my life.”

Liam’s always wanted Oasis back together so he got in touch

Insider

And it’s safe to say that Anais has Noel’s ear.

Last month, The Sun revealed that she had encouraged her dad to distance himself from disgraced comedian Russell Brand.

Limit hangovers

Brand has been charged with rape and sexual assaults relating to four women. He has denied all the allegations.

A source said: “Anais realised that her dad’s close links to Brand wasn’t a good look.

“She’s very PR savvy. There was a discussion and Noel agreed cutting ties was best.

“Anais, Noel, and the rest of the family are horrified at Brand’s alleged behaviour and had no idea what was going on.”

And her influence on Noel doesn’t end there.

She is helping to run her dad’s social media and is on his company’s payroll.

The source said: “Anais does a lot on social media to make money, so it’s a natural fit for her to help her dad out.

“She knows what does and doesn’t work for Generation Z, whereas Noel doesn’t.

“It’s given them more of a chance to bond.

“Noel hired her because she is genuinely good at her job, not because she is his child.”

The dedicated daughter is also helping with the song selection for the tour.

The source added: “Anais has helped with the tour set list by looking at what has done well on TikTok with the younger generation.

“As a result, [the song] Bonehead’s Bank Holiday will be played live by Oasis for the first time.

“They’ll also play Digsy’s Dinner, and Talk Tonight.

“She wants to help Oasis gain younger fans as well as their long-standing fans.”

The Oasis reunion announcement has been marred by older fans hitting out at younger people getting tickets, something Anais has been very vocal about on social media.

On TikTok, she wrote: “One thing I won’t stand for is the ageism and the misogyny around people getting tickets.

“Sorry, if a 19-year-old girl in a pink cowboy hat wants to be there, I will have my friendship bracelets ready.”

Grumpy fans have claimed that the band would hate stuff put up by young people on TikTok.

Sometimes people put this hyper-aggressive masculine ideology into what they think that my dad and my uncle are going to be like

In an interview with Hello! Anais hit back, saying they were wrong.

She told the magazine: “I see this all the time, actually, where someone will post a funny video or a cover song and people would say ‘[Oasis] would hate this’.

“No, no, you hate this.

“Sometimes people put this hyper-aggressive masculine ideology into what they think that my dad and my uncle are going to be like.

“They’re actually a lot more accepting than the fans are.”

Anais plans to be stage-side to support her father throughout the reunion run.

She joked in an interview that her aims for the year were to: “Limit the amount of hangovers I have after all the Oasis concerts, remember to take my supplements and drink a lot of water.”

Whether she can manage to keep her dad and uncle in a similar state remains to be seen.

Two UK seaside counties ranked and rated including one with the ‘best beaches’

Which? has extensively rated and compared two popular seaside counties popular with British staycationers to see which one offers the best holiday

Two UK counties have been pit against one another to determine which makes for the best UK beach holiday destination. Ranking best scones to prettiest beaches, both counties have a wealth to offer travellers but one might have a slight edge.

The UK consumer champion Which has done an extensive breakdown of the merits of both Devon and Cornwall. Both counties are beloved destinations for both Brits and international travellers for their impressive beaches promising the perfect British seaside holiday.

Both Devon and Cornwall have more than 400 miles of shore, but according to Which, Devon stands out for having two distinct coasts. The north shores of both counties is where you will find the wildest waters – and thus, the most daring surfers – and the south is generally more serene.

But which of the two counties has the prettiest beach? According to Which, Devon takes the prize with Bantham Beach. While Cornwall’s Kyanance Cove is home to stunning cliffs and caves that travellers will recognise from the Game of Thrones, Devon has its own enchanting gem.

Bantham Beach in Devon is “an archetypal English beach, full of space, sand and salt breezes” according to Which. The south Devon beach takes on the shape of a horseshoe and is where the River Avon unravels into the English Channel.

While Devon may have the prettiest beach, Cornwall takes the prize for the best wild beach. Soar Mill Cove in Devon is a secret paradise between Salcombe and Hope Cove that is defined by green cliffs.

While Soar Mill Cove is a true gem, Lantic Bay in Cornwall wins for best wild beach with its wildflower-filled sea cliffs and the thick hedgerows that provide privacy and an atmosphere of tranquility. There are no shops, toilets or lifeguards on the shores, but that again adds to its wild and rare charm.

Has Devon won the contest?

But Devon and Cornwall are more than their beaches, to determine the best seaside county Which also took the villages into consideration. To determine the county with the best small village beaches, Which put Cornwall’s Mawgan Porth Beach head-to-head with Combesgate Beach in Devon.

Devon won the final round, with Which calling Combesgate Beach “possibly the loveliest village in north Devon” where “it feels as though clock hands have stood still”. Both Combesgate Beach and Mawgan Porth Beach in Cornwall are incredible surfer beaches, but Combesgate wins out with its serene beauty and maze of rock pools. With that, Devon wins the title of best UK beach holiday destination.

According to Which: “Devon – the only English county to claim two separate coastlines – wins for the diversity of its beaches. There are riches in the south: pebbly beaches near the Dorset border ideal for fossil hunters, plus the little coves of the South Hams for picnics and the red sands of Paignton, poised beside a pier and fairground rides.”

Devon also beat Cornwall in Which’s ranking of the best seaside towns, with Dartmouth, scoring 79%, beating Cornwall’s highest-placed beach town of St Mawes. And just a little outside of Dartmouth, you’ll find Blackpool Sands, a secluded private corner of the coast.

Dartmouth stands out for its breath-taking scenery and it was described by blogger Sarah Hagan – known online as sarahkhagan – as the “most beautiful town in the UK” in a viral video.
