The UK is full of gorgeous beach towns but there’s one picturesque spot that often slips under the radar, despite having a gorgeous sandy beach and plenty of coastal walks

Summer is fast approaching and as the weather heats up, it’s no surprise that Brits are starting to eye up staycations along the UK’s amazing coast.

Of course there are some spots that never fail to draw in the crowds such as Cornwall and Devon, but there’s one quiet fishing village that travel insiders have dubbed the “UK’s forgotten beach town”. Despite boasting a breathtaking mile-long sandy beach, within an area of outstanding natural beauty, Aberdaron on the Llyn Peninsula often slips under the radar.

In fact, travel experts at Ski Vertigo have named it the UK’s most underrated destination, describing it as a “Welsh gem” that is “often skipped in favour of more popular seaside towns”. One of their insiders explained: “Aberdaron has golden sands, a peaceful village charm, and incredible coastal paths – without the price tag of Cornwall.”

That ‘peaceful village charm’ includes cosy cafes, restaurants and a sailing club, as well as a handful of hotels with everything you could want for a calming seaside getaway. There are plenty of local attractions too such as Plas yn Rhiw, a National Trust property with some pretty enviable views across Cardigan Bay. Meanwhile a trip to St Hywyn’s Church offers up some nice vistas of the village and seaside.

For the outdoorsy tourists, the various sea caves and rock pools are sure to be of interest, but you’ll want to leave time on your itinerary for a trip to Bardsey Island. This breathtaking spot can be reached by boat and is both a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It’s open to visitors from March through to October, while its waters have been known to host the likes of dolphins and whales.

Back in Aberdaron, one spot that never fails to attract both locals and tourists is Porthor Beach, which is known for its ‘whistling sands’. The noise comes from the sound that the sand makes as you walk over the granules, a rare phenomenon especially in the UK and Europe.

While it’s not a tourist hotspot, the beach does have plenty of facilities for those who want to make a day of it. There is a cafe serving up delicious snacks and coffees, perfect for replenishing your energy after a walk in the surrounding area, but be wary that some visitors have said the walk down to the beach from the car park can be quite steep, so bring some sturdy footwear. If you want to bring your dog along, take note that there are restrictions between April to September when it comes to letting them run free along the sands.

Although you can swim at this beach, visitors are warned to beware of strong currents and large breaking waves in the area, and to take care especially during strong winds. The beach is nestled amidst some cliffs too which makes for an Instagram-worthy backdrop, but tourists are warned not to climb or dig into the cliffs, and to keep children under supervision at all times.

Actor George Wendt, who starred in the beloved Cheers TV series, has passed away at the age of 76, and he has a famous Ted Lasso nephew he’s sadly leaving behind

George Wendt, the legendary actor who has sadly passed away at the age of 76, is related to a major Ted Lasso star.

The actor, who was best known for his role as Norm Peterson in the iconic sitcom Cheers, died peacefully in his sleep at his home, his family confirmed.

A representative told the Hollywood Reporter: “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

During his notable career, the American star delighted viewers on Saturday Night Live, portraying Bob Swerski, one of the fervent superfans often seen crowding around Coach Mike Ditka’s diner, passionately rooting for “Da Bears.”

He also boasted an impressive back catalogue of film appearances, gracing screens in Dreamscape (1984), House (1985), Fletch (1985), Gung Ho (1986), Plain Clothes (1987), Never Say Die (1988), Guilty by Suspicion (1991), Forever Young (1992) and the pop culture hit Spice World (1997).

But away from work, George spent time with his doting family, including his wife Bernadette Birkett and their three children: Hilary, Joe, and Daniel. He also leaves behind his nephew, Jason Sudeikis, who plays the lead role in the hugely popular TV series Ted Lasso.

While appearing on an episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast, George gushed over his pride for his famous nephew. The Cheers star shared: “Proud especially, you know, not only of the success, but he’s solid. Have you read profiles and stuff? I mean he is such a mesh, so smart, so thoughtful. I mean, it all comes out in the show. Right?”

There has even been a touching link between the finale of Ted Lasso and the final episode of Cheers – a homage to the uncle and nephew duo.

During the season three finale of Ted Lasso, bartender Mae straightens a framed photo of Apache leader Geronimo at the Crown & Anchor. The subtle but touching scene was inspired by the ending of Cheers, which saw a similar picture and a small gesture from Sam.

Marked by heartbreaking coincidence, the news of George’s death comes precisely 32 years after the last episode of Cheers graced our television screens. With a run of 275 episodes under his belt, the actor garnered six Primetime Emmy Award nods for his beloved role as the beer-chugging regular, Norm.

On X, formerly Twitter, tributes poured in from fans mourning their favourite TV bar patron, with one writing: “George Wendt, beloved for his role as Norm on Cheers, has died at 77. With a beer in hand and a heart of gold, he made millions feel like regulars. A true legend of TV comfort and comedy.”

Another wrote: “Rest in peace to George Wendt, responsible for Norm Peterson, one of the most iconic sitcom characters of my lifetime. Cheers big guy. Rest easy.”

A third also shared a touching tribute: “RIP George Wendt. You were a big part of my childhood and the impact you had on society was positive and substantial. We are sad to see you go, but know you will be in a better place. Thanks for the laughs.”

A local has revealed the ‘perfect’ escape from Spain’s bustling beaches that most tourists struggle to find. Renowned for its Gaudí architecture, ubiquitous history, and fancy rooftop cocktail bars – Barcelona, located in Spain’s Catalonia region, has long been a tourist hotspot.

Last year, a staggering 15.6 million tourists flocked to cosmopolitan city, to soak up the sun and pretend they’re suddenly art and history connoisseurs. It’s a 100,000 decrease compared to 2023 overnight figures, but still means finding a beach where you’re not rubbing shoulders with a complete stranger an almost impossible feat.

Playa de Bogatell is a popular spot for sun-worshipping Brits, boasting sugar-like sands, cobalt waters, and a slew of sea-view eateries. However, in the peak seasons – the stretch of sand can become insufferably crowded.

Luckily, TikTok channel Explorebarcelona explained that just a stone’s throw from the busy beach lies a stunning shore that has somehow managed to escape the tourist limelight. “Most tourists will never find this place, but most locals know it’s the perfect escape,” the account said.

“Tired of crowded beaches, and overpriced drinks? Just walk 15 minutes further and you will find Platja Nova Mar Bella, a hidden gem where locals actually relax. [There are] no vendors, no noise, just clean sand, clear water, and space to breathe.”

On TripAdvisor, Platja Nova Mar Bella has garnered hundreds of five-star reviews from impressed travellers.”The sand was light coloured tan with no rocks and clean surroundings,” one visitor hailed. “The drop off into the sea was substantial and with smooth rocks to walk into the water. Beverages were easily attained as were umbrellas to rent.”

Another agreed, commenting: “[It’s] quieter than beaches nearer the town. There are spacious toilets, bike racks to lock up rental bikes, and showers. It’s a relaxed unintimidating beach for people of all ages and all shapes and sizes!”

A third added: “Very nice tapas bar in the middle of the beach, very nice sand and clean water. Very convenient and free parking,” while a fourth penned: “The beach was closed to swimming because of high wind and surf conditions but that didn’t stop us from dipping our feet in the water and enjoying the sun!”

However, others argued the beach’s pristine reputation had already started to fade. One-star reviews complaining about ‘aggressive’ vendors and pickpockets have now started to tarnish the review site.

“The place is nice and clean,” one person wrote. “The only downside is the shoppers. [They’re] very aggressive and insistent… they had to be put back in their place vigorously.”

Others pointed out the beach was actually a nudist beach, despite a lack of notice boards. Many have branded the beach a ‘gay beach’, as it tends to attract LGBTQ+ visitors.

Benidorm police carried out a series of raids on the nightlife venues in the area known as the ‘English zone’ in the Spanish resort, which is popular with British holidaymakers

Benidorm police are conducting daily sweeps in the town’s infamous ‘English zone’ in a bid to crack down on drug peddling to Brit holidaymakers.

Cops have unearthed several ingenious hiding spots for contraband, from inside fire extinguishers and sofa covers to electrical boxes and even loo roll holders. They’ve sent a clear message to dealers that no matter where they stash their illegal wares, they’ll be rooted out.

In the latest clampdown, seven individuals were arrested for crimes against public health, with officers confiscating drugs valued at €30,000 (£25,300).

A Benidorm Local Police spokesperson reported that this month alone, six venues in the bustling party hub frequented by British tourists have been probed, leading to four being shuttered as a precaution. The haul included 200 grams of cocaine, 300 tabs of LSD and MDMA pills, 200 portions of marijuana (THC), 20 grams of hash, eight canisters of laughing gas, along with mobiles and €3,000 in cash.

Stashing narcotics in bizarre places has become a routine “modus operandi” for drug sellers in the area, acknowledged by repeated busts. For instance, just back in March, two culprits were collared for hoarding drugs at a local nightspot, where 85 doses of narcotics were discovered.

MDMA, ecstasy, cocaine, and cannabis were stashed away in fire extinguishers, toilet cisterns, and beneath the cash register.

Police have said that the pair arrested were tasked with minding the drugs at the pubs and raking in cash for them. Officers said they found them with a large sum of money. The police have vowed to keep up the daily raids.

Although most trips to Benidorm take place without any issues, tourists do occasionally face problems.

In April three men were apprehended in Benidorm after a tourist’s bank cards were stolen and used nine times in less than 20 minutes. The tourist was targeted near the town’s infamous Muggers’ Alley, located off Gerona Street next to the local tourist police station. The arrests were made after the victim received notifications on his mobile about the usage of his cards at various bars and restaurants around the town, leading detectives to one of these locations.
