Good Morning Britain star warns ‘they could die’ in heartbreaking news update

Good Morning Britain host Adil Ray discussed a “serious situation” on Friday

A Good Morning Britain star warned “they could die” in a heartbreaking news update on Friday (December 19).

During the latest episode of the popular ITV breakfast show, presenters Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins brought viewers up to speed with breaking news from Britain and beyond.

They were accompanied in the studio by Sean Fletcher, who covered additional news items, whilst Laura Tobin delivered regular weather forecasts live from Nottingham.

Later in the programme, Adil and Charlotte examined the day’s pressing issues alongside regular panellists Salma Shah and Caroline Flint.

The discussion soon turned to the continuing Middle East conflict, with Adil identifying the eight Palestine Action campaigners who have been engaged in an indefinite hunger strike at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey, reports Wales Online.

The protest action commenced on November 2 and has been characterised as “the biggest coordinated prison hunger strike” in nearly four decades in Britain, according to campaign organisation Prisoners for Palestine, speaking at a press briefing on Thursday (December 18).

Over 800 medical professionals, legal specialists, and relatives have written to Justice Secretary David Lammy, calling on him to meet with their legal representatives to address the continuing demonstration.

“They have been arrested and charged because they were part of the Palestinian protests. Some of them have been on hunger strike for 47 days, it’s 48 now actually,” Adil stated.

“I’m too young to remember, but in 1981, IRA prisoners went on hunger strike. Some of them died within 46 days. It’s a serious situation.

“Should we be doing more in this case, Salma? Should the government be intervening? They’re saying the prisons have a system to deal with this. These could die. These prisoners are on remand, but they could die in prison.”

Salma responded: “It’s a difficult situation because nobody wants them to die, and they have decided to take a very drastic measure by going on a hunger strike.

“As I understand it, of the eight, there were six that were in critical condition; two of them have now stopped their hunger strike because they were in such a bad way.

“What we need to do is ensure that the medical support team that is in prison is allowed to try and convince them that this is not the right action going forward, because losing lives is not going to fundamentally change what they want to change.”

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice previously stated: “The Deputy Prime Minister has responded to and will continue to respond to correspondence on this issue, and is being kept informed of the situation. We continually assess prisoners’ wellbeing and will always take the appropriate action, including taking prisoners to hospital if they are assessed as needing treatment by a medical professional.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am

Peter has spoken over the last year about his mother’s deteriorating health and the heartache that comes with it.

And in a new interview with OK! Magazine, he admitted: “Of course I worry this could be Mum’s last Christmas.

“She’s very delicate. Her Parkinson’s has progressed quite a bit. Her speech is almost gone. She’ll say a word or two. It’s heartbreaking, because she’s our world, our pillar of strength.”

Peter, who was raised in Australia, often goes back Down Under to visit Thea and his dad Savvas, 92.

His older sister, Debbie, also resides back home and helps to look after their parents.

Admitting that it’s tough to also see his dad’s health decline with age, the dad-of-five said: “Then I see Dad and he’s 92 and with her every single day. But he’s getting delicate now, too.

“His memory’s going, but I am so grateful that they made that milestone I prayed for – 70 years of marriage in September.”

“It’s a raw pain. I’m a grown man, but I still can’t accept in my heart that these things happen to the people I love the most,” he added.

In September last year, Peter shared a heartwarming clip of his parents to social media as they celebrated their 69th anniversary,

His dad, Savvas, could be seen in the clip bringing wife Thea a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

He wrote at the time: “You inspire me so much mum and dad. Love you so very much.

“My 91-year-old dad giving flowers to my beautiful mum.”

Last year, Peter’s eldest children, 20-year-old Junior and Princess, 18, took a solo trip to visit their grandparents last year.

The holiday fell just days after his wife Emily MacDonagh had given birth to their third child together, Arabella.

The couple also share kids Theo and Amelia, while Peter shares his eldest children with ex-Katie Price.

At the time, the singer shared how proud he was of Princess and Junior for taking the time to visit Emily in hospital after labour before then flying to Austrlia.

He said on Instagram: “Junior and princess. The fact that you drove to Somerset to be with us hours before and the days that followed to see the arrival of your baby sister,”

“AND THEN to get on a plane and travel 12,000 miles to be with your grandmother in a very difficult time for her shows me what beautiful children you are.”

Coleen Nolan admits ‘I felt like a terrible mother’ in heartbreaking family confession

Coleen Nolan has opened up about a hidden family struggle on Friday’s Good Morning Britain

Coleen Nolan has revealed she spent ‘years crying’ and feeling like a ‘terrible mother’ over a hidden family struggle.

Over the summer, Coleen, 60, disclosed that her son, Shane, 37, had been fighting a secret battle with drugs which saw him ‘hit rock bottom’ and wreck his marriage to his beauty queen ex-wife, Maddie Wahdan.

Coleen’s son, Shane, whom she shares with ex-husband Shane Richie, separated from his beauty queen wife in December 2023 amid claims he had been unfaithful – just a year after they had tied the knot.

Over the summer, Shane, alongside his mother Coleen, spoke candidly about his struggle with drug addiction, which resulted in him being admitted to rehab as his family feared for his life.

Shane is now in a new relationship with girlfriend Kimberly Sallis, whom he has credited for helping him through the drug addiction, and in November they welcomed their first child together, a baby boy called Cruz-Carter, reports Wales Online.

Speaking about her son’s past struggle on Friday’s Good Morning Britain, Coleen confessed: “I felt like a terrible mother. I thought it was my fault.”

Coleen said of her son speaking out: “It was totally Shane’s decision. It would never have been me forcing him in to talk about it. He thought it was important to talk about and especially when it was during Men’s Mental Health month and all of that.

“When he did it, we were both nervous. I was quite emotional because it’s really hard as a parent or a relative to watch an addict. I mean, it was years of me crying because I couldn’t do anything. I’m his mum and I couldn’t do anything.”

Coleen went on: “People were like, ‘Well, you know, you’re going to have to kick him out. You’re going to have to do that.’ and I went ‘He’s my child!’

“I kept making excuses for him, ‘well, I think he did this… no, no, it’s just because he’s tired, you know.’ And then something major happened where he ended up with stitches in his head and all of that. I think that was a massive wake up call.

“Talking about it afterwards, he said to me, ‘Mum, I feel like a whole weight has been lifted off my shoulders.'” Coleen revealed it was equally beneficial for Shane to understand the impact his struggle had on her.

The Loose Women panellist emotionally shared: “I felt like a terrible mother. I thought it was my fault. I’d done things wrong. I couldn’t help him and it was nothing to do with me. As an addict, the only person that could have helped him was himself, which he did.”

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV X.

Sharon Osbourne considered “going with Ozzy” when he passed away. The former X Factor judge, 73, had been married to Black Sabbath legend Ozzy for more than 40 years when he died in July at the age of 76, and has now made the candid admission that she may have ended it all had it not been for their children.

The showbiz couple had Aimee, 42, Kelly, 41, and 40-year-old Jack together, and when asked how they had supported her through her grief, she admitted they were the only reason she wanted to continue.

She said: “I wouldn’t have got through. I would have just gone with Ozzy, definitely. I’ve done everything I wanted to do. You know they’ve been unbelievable, just magnificent with me, all three of them.”

The music manager recalled a time in the past when she suffered a mental breakdown and when she sought professional help in a facility, she saw the ramifications children are forced to deal with parents have taken their own lives.

Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored , she added: “Years ago, when I had one of my mental breakdowns, I went into a little facility to help with my head. And there were two girls over there. They didn’t know each other, but they were in there, each mother had committed suicide.

“And I saw the state that these two young women were in and what it had done to their lives, and I thought, I will never, ever, ever do that to my kids.”

The matriarch of the Osbourne family also recalled the moment she found him dead and how she screamed uncontrollably at realising he had passed.

She said: “He had a heart attack. I ran downstairs, and there he was, and they were trying to resuscitate him, and I’m like, ‘Don’t — just leave him. Leave him. You can’t. He’s gone’. I knew instantly he’d gone. And they tried and tried, and then they took him by helicopter to the hospital and they tried, and it’s like, ‘He’s gone. Just leave him.'”

Sharon also explained how Ozzy would use the crosstrainer for up to an hour and a half a day, even with his ill health. Sharing a moment from their final night together for the first time, Sharon said Ozzy had been up and down out of bed all night.

“He said, ‘Kiss me’. And then he said, ‘Hug me tight’. I can’t help wondering if I should have, could I have? If only I’d have told him I loved him more. If only I’d have held him tighter. And he went downstairs, worked out for 20 minutes and passed away,” she said.

ITV News presenter’s heartbreaking ‘mission’ as she admits ‘unable to control grief’

The ITV News journalist has opened up about the ‘agonising’ trip she made following the death of her husband, who passed away in 2022

ITV News Arts Editor Nina Nannar has shared her heartache following the death of her husband. Her partner of 23 years passed away due to complications from kidney disease in 2022, leaving behind their 19-year-old daughter Mimi.

In a recent heartfelt interview, Nina spoke about her “agonising” journey to New Zealand to scatter the ashes of her late husband, Steve Ronson.

The 57-year-old told Norfolk magazine that she had been planning and “dreading” this trip for over a year as it was a “heartbreaking mission”.

She intended to return Steve’s ashes to his homeland of New Zealand but confessed she wasn’t emotionally prepared.

The broadcaster admitted to sleepless nights worrying about whether she could manage her grief and not “be embarrassing” in front of his friends.

Nina confided in the publication: “Even though Steve has been gone three years, the sorrow I feel over his loss still manages to cripple me in unexpected moments, of leaving me still in despair and disbelief that he is no longer here.”

She expressed gratitude towards her friends for supporting her “through my irrational moments” and “times of agony”, reports the Express.

Nina added: “My grief is raw, but this trip Mimi and I made did help us in a huge way.” During their visit to New Zealand, Nina and Mimi joined Steve’s friends at his favourite surf beach where they sang their “family anthem”, Return Of The Grievous Angel.

They also congregated at a beach on the Coramandel Peninsula, where Nina captured a video and sent it to his sister, Chris.

She asked Nina if she had spotted an orb of green light traversing the video, which Nina hoped was a sign from Steve.

Kidney Research UK reported that Steve was born with reflux, a condition affecting a valve in the ureter, causing urine to flow in the wrong direction, from the bladder back into the kidney.

He endured three and a half years on dialysis before receiving a kidney transplant that lasted for 30 years. In 2021, he underwent surgery to remove a lump, but doctors found cancer cells.

A year later, the cancer cells had spread, leading to the removal of Steve’s ear the day after his 60th birthday. Tragically, he passed away in 2022, surrounded by his loved ones.

Kate Winslet ‘hid and cried’ as Netflix film ‘relived’ heartbreaking loss

Kate Winslet has opened up about the painful experience of reliving her mother’s 2017 death while making her directorial debut Goodbye June, which stars Helen Mirren

Kate Winslet has opened up about the emotionally challenging experience of “reliving” her mother’s death whilst working on her latest film, Goodbye June.

The Titanic star has stepped behind the camera for her directorial debut with this feature-length drama, offering a poignant portrayal of a family coming together around their dying mother over the Christmas period. The script was penned by her son, Joe Anders.

Arriving on Netflix on 24th December, Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren takes on the role of matriarch June, whilst the ensemble cast features Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough and Timothy Spall.

Ahead of the film’s limited cinema release this Friday (12th December), Winslet discussed the loss of her own mother in 2017, admitting it “still feels like yesterday”.

During an appearance on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, the actress explained she’d initially hoped to “keep that private experience separate” from the project, before recognising this wouldn’t be feasible, reports the Express.

“It wasn’t necessarily cathartic, but there were days when I was literally reliving what happened when I lost my own mum, even though our film is fictional. And I would find myself strangely trying to almost hide in a funny way.”

Winslet told Cotton she frequently found herself “sitting quietly” behind Max, the production’s focus puller, during particularly intimate moments featuring Mirren and Spall.

“I would just sit with him quietly watching his monitor and sort of crying on his back,” she recalled. The star described the crew member as a “great spirit” to lean on during the more demanding moments of filming.

Winslet also expressed her hope that the film will ignite family discussions about the harsh realities of loss, reflecting on several enlightening conversations that took place among the cast and crew during production.

“Actually in this country, I don’t think we’re very good at talking about loss. I don’t think we’re very good at processing grief,” she elaborated.

“And in an interesting way it did bring up a lot of those conversations and people were quite grateful to be able to have them, not just the cast, but sometimes the crew as well.”

Discussing her shift from actress to director, Winslet noted that she has observed her male peers make the same transition “without any judgment or scrutiny”, a luxury not often extended to women in the industry.

“It feels like for you personally, not only is this an amazing challenge for you to make that switch, but also you’re doing it on behalf of women to help this cultural shift in the very male-dominated Hollywood directing scene,” she stated.

Goodbye June is in limited UK cinemas from Friday, 12th December and on Netflix from 24th December.
